00:01Today in Wheeler Dealers France, we're tackling an ultra-popular icon, the Volkswagen Golf 1 convertible, a
00:08A completely iconic model.
00:09Everyone loves this car, young and old, girls and guys, it's simple.
00:14It has been unanimously acclaimed for 45 years.
00:16The Golf Cabriolet has become a highly sought-after collector's item, and I managed to get one for just...
00:225200 euros, so there's bound to be a downside.
00:25The engine doesn't work, the gearbox has problems, there are leaks everywhere, and the aesthetics are terrible.
00:29I'm not even going to mention it, the convertible top, the interior, the legs, you don't see the work involved?
00:33I admit I messed up a little, but 5200 euros, man, that's a real bonus, isn't it?
00:36It's not expensive at all.
00:37Cheap, oh yes.
00:39Mechanically, our example is far from the legendary reliability of Golfs, and as a convertible is judged as much on the
00:45In terms of both mechanics and style, it's a real challenge that awaits us if we hope to reach 13,000 euros.
00:50for resale.
00:51Our Golf GTI lacks power, and above all, it fluctuates wildly at idle.
00:56So I'm going to take apart the fuel injection system to check its condition; I'll take the opportunity to remove the engine while I'm at it, and this
01:01What's certain is that I won't be bored.
01:04As always, my mission is to find good deals on the second-hand market, to resell them to
01:09max of their rating.
01:10It seems to suit you, and from now on Stephanie, things are going to be super easy.
01:15It's very, very simple, actually, because we're going to negotiate, we're going to discuss the price.
01:18Oh dear, she wants to negotiate, she wants to negotiate.
01:21And my partner, with his mechanical expertise and practical skills, can bring any... back to life.
01:27vehicle at the end of its travel.
01:30Distribution complete.
01:31I'm good at that aspect of the engine.
01:33Now, I still have to do the clutch and my gearbox output leak.
01:37Yeah, I still have work to do.
01:41A brand new season, a new mechanical challenge, and even more vehicles to restore.
01:46Mythical Young Timers, prestige vehicles, powerhouses, or formats tailored for racing.
01:51This year, we're going to have a great time working on models that can bring us some nice money.
01:57I'm a little Axel, over there.
01:58I think to myself that this car, frankly, has regained all its capabilities.
02:02The 95 horsepower, they're definitely there.
02:04Ah!
02:05Now you're making me happy, you see.
02:06Oh yeah!
02:07It's progressing well.
02:21I just got my hands on a cult classic car made in Germany.
02:25Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my latest acquisition, a first generation Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet.
02:39Everyone loves this car.
02:40Young people, older people, girls, guys, it's not complicated, it has been universally popular for 45 years.
02:49I bought this one for 5200 euros, it's from 1988, it's the generation that was restyled
02:54with the largest partial wraps, with body-colored fender flares, with giant aluminum ones, with
03:00the 4-headlight bracket.
03:01It's called the Carman kit and it's really the most sought-after of the Golf Cabriolets.
03:07Under the hood, we have the 1800 injection engine derived from the Golf GTI.
03:10What does it produce? 95 horsepower doesn't sound like much, but I can tell you it's more than enough.
03:15to have a blast behind the wheel.
03:20Born from a collaboration between Volkswagen and the coachbuilder Carman, already responsible for the iconic Beetle Cabriolet, the
03:26The Golf 1 Cabriolet was launched in 1979.
03:30Very quickly, it became distinguished by its fixed hoop which earned it the nickname of strawberry basket.
03:36Featuring 4 seats, a canvas roof and a simple style similar to the Golf hatchback, it
03:42also offers dynamic engine options.
03:44From the 1.5-liter 70-horsepower engine to the 1.6-liter engine pushing up to 110 horsepower, including...
03:481.8 litres catalyzed in the 80s-90s, it has been able to evolve with the demands of the public.
03:54Produced for more than 14 years until 1993, the Golf Cabriolet established itself as a true commercial success.
04:03388,522 units were manufactured.
04:06Thanks to its combination of open-air enjoyment, accessibility and robustness, it becomes one of the convertibles
04:12the most popular of his time.
04:14And I fully intend to take advantage of it.
04:19A Golf Cabriolet Kid Carman with the 1800 Injection engine, in very good condition, will cost around 13,000.
04:2514,000 euros.
04:26So this one, I paid 3 times less for.
04:28That means there's still quite a bit of work to be done on it.
04:33First, there's the distribution to do, but honestly, that's not what worries me the most.
04:37Ah, this 1800 Injection, it's a relatively torquey engine, but supposed to have 95 horsepower and a small
04:43Not much potato.
04:44Right now, I feel like I have a maximum of 50 horsepower, you know.
04:46She's moving forward, but not at all.
04:48Right now, I'm totally into it.
04:51So, there's another problem, and that's the slowdown.
04:53It goes up, it goes down, it goes up again.
04:56What is this thing?
04:57It's a real merry-go-round, I think.
04:58I wonder if it's not a problem with the injection system.
05:00And that, that would be a real pain.
05:04Okay, and there's something else too.
05:06As soon as I change gears, there's a problem with the guidance.
05:09It's supposed to be super smooth here.
05:10And then, it all falls apart.
05:11Frankly, it's not pleasant at all.
05:13I think we have a clutch problem too.
05:15The pedal is really high.
05:18It starts spinning its wheels as soon as I give it gas.
05:20And God knows, if you don't have a lot, the pedal is too high.
05:23And that's not normal at all.
05:29On the mechanical side, as you've probably guessed, there's a bit of an expense involved.
05:31But then, on the aesthetic side, there's a lot of work to be done as well.
05:33We're definitely going to have to open our wallets here.
05:35Because right now, we have a condom that is extremely worn out.
05:37We have an interior.
05:38When I see the state of the seats, they are truly disgusting.
05:41I'm still not entirely at ease about this operation.
05:44At the same time, at 5200 bucks, folks,
05:47I couldn't just leave her there, you know.
05:48It's still a legendary car.
05:50The Golf Cabriolet is something else.
05:55There was a slogan at the time that said
05:57"Yet it's easy not to make a mistake."
06:00Yeah, I hope I haven't made a mistake.
06:02Because otherwise, the big guy is really going to sulk.
06:12Ah! A little Golf Cabriolet.
06:15Ah yeah! A first generation, now that's a collector's item.
06:28Honestly, I'd been waiting for them to bring me one back for a while, you know.
06:31A phase 2 from 1988.
06:32Yeah, I see that.
06:33Calente 4 headlights, fender extension.
06:35That's reserved for phase 2.
06:37Then, I don't know if you've noticed, it's a slightly special version, though.
06:41No.
06:41Oh no? Go ahead, take a good look.
06:43I admit, there's a small chrome strip there.
06:45That's surprising.
06:45Yeah.
06:47It has a third brake light.
06:49Yeah.
06:50And it doesn't say "Golf Cabriolet", but just convertible.
06:53So, this is a US version, right?
06:55She comes straight from California.
06:56Actually, I have a friend who does import-export.
06:58That was in his container, so there you go.
06:59That's cool, isn't it?
07:00You know, I think it might actually appeal to the purists.
07:02Yes, there are lots of little peculiarities, look, the defective ones.
07:04That doesn't exist on European models, you see.
07:06Honestly, it's cool for bringing in air.
07:07Yeah, right.
07:08So, when you look closely, of course, the meter is made of corn.
07:10It's not measured in kilometers, you see.
07:11Okay, corn counter.
07:13However, the interior, it was a breath of fresh air.
07:14Well, that's an understatement, isn't it?
07:16I can say that he's completely messed up, that's all.
07:18Yeah, we need to find some seats, it's going to be a real hassle, isn't it?
07:20Yeah, well, I need to find some, though, you see.
07:21And what about the condom?
07:22Well, we'll unfold the condom together, you'll see.
07:24It doesn't look very fresh, from what I can see.
07:25It's not fantastic, either, I see you.
07:27Well, we've had a bit of a rough time with the Californians, especially there, there's nothing there.
07:31He's basically a piece of tape, man.
07:32Yeah.
07:33Yeah, it's dead now.
07:34Well, I'll admit that aesthetics are important on a convertible.
07:36You need a nice condom, you see.
07:37You surprise me.
07:38What you can also do with it is give the rims a good little makeover, you see.
07:42Ah, I agree, man.
07:43A small illustrated poly-image on the rims, we'll gain 20 years instantly.
07:46However, the bumpers will need to be repainted.
07:47Yeah, that's a shame.
07:48The bodywork is immaculate and the bumpers are scratched.
07:51So, that gives us a paint job, front bumper, rear bumper.
07:53Okay, so what about the mechanics?
07:54Ah, wait, I'll open the hood for you.
07:56Ah, go ahead.
07:58SO ?
07:59Well, let's just say there are pros and cons.
08:02Okay.
08:03Well, first of all, you know it, it's the 1800 injection.
08:05That's it.
08:05That's practically the same engine as the GTI, isn't it?
08:07It's practically the same as the GTI.
08:09And already, an important piece is missing.
08:10There is no cache on the distribution.
08:12Then look, your belt, when I look at it, you can see that it's quite worn.
08:14Did you see that line there?
08:15Well, first of all, yes, there is an iron distribution, that's for sure.
08:18Yeah.
08:18And then the cache, I have a mission, it's to find one, you know.
08:21That's it.
08:22And there's a significant oil leak there too, at the level of the couscu buteur.
08:26Ah, there's a bit of fat.
08:27No, no.
08:28There's a lot of fat.
08:29We can't leave it like this.
08:30Yes, but that's not what worries me the most.
08:31It's what ?
08:33She doesn't like potatoes.
08:34Then there's no slowdown, plus it's all over the place, it goes up and down...
08:36permanence.
08:37Your thing sounds like an injection problem.
08:38That's what I was afraid of, yeah.
08:39Ah, and you know that this can take us far.
08:41A piston, that's expensive, isn't it?
08:42And that's not all, there's also the gearbox.
08:44What is this box?
08:45The clutch, in my opinion, is already dead.
08:46And then, oddly enough, the clutch pedal is really high.
08:50Honestly, the box to make, on top of everything else, what.
08:53In the gearbox, injection, all the aesthetics, the distribution, the cover.
08:57Then, to be honest, I'll say something, there's a kind of clunking sound.
09:00It comes from the front, there, somewhere.
09:01That's because we're in first grade.
09:03And then, the gear guidance, my friend, it's creaking, that's what it is.
09:05That's not normal, that's not wrong.
09:05The gears grind.
09:06We're going to lift it, we're going to check that.
09:08Yeah, no reason.
09:16Okay, so, this gearbox.
09:22The linkage, there was, huh.
09:24Ah, first of all, there's a sacrifice at the box level.
09:26Did you see that there, at the gearbox output?
09:27Ah yeah, there's a bit of oil, indeed.
09:28There's a little oil.
09:30But it's also leaking from the oil pan, along its entire length.
09:33And the damned woman who's running away, too.
09:35No, but seriously, look.
09:37There's oil everywhere, man.
09:39But wait, look at the cardoon bellows there.
09:41But your bellows is also leaking.
09:44I'll be honest with you, I didn't expect all these leaks, though.
09:46Yeah, you didn't expect all these leaks.
09:48Wait, what is this?
09:50What ?
09:51It's an engine mount, it's torn off.
09:53Ah, well, the klong, it comes from there, in my opinion.
09:55Well, I can confirm, yes, that it should make a clunking sound.
09:57We found it.
09:58No, wait, you tell me, there are pros and cons.
10:00I only see downsides.
10:02The engine is not working.
10:03The company has problems.
10:04There are leaks everywhere.
10:05As for the aesthetics, I won't even mention them.
10:06The convertible top, the interior, the legs.
10:09In short, you don't see the work involved.
10:10I admit I messed up a little bit.
10:12But 5200 euros, man, that's a real plus.
10:13It's not expensive at all.
10:14Cheap, oh yes.
10:15And then, you know what, I'll make you a little coffee with sugar.
10:19Can I put this in the "pros" or not?
10:20You can put it in the pluses.
10:21I'm trying to make you like sugar.
10:23Finally, we take the opportunity to establish a real battle plan.
10:26Because otherwise, it's going to be a nightmare.
10:27Yes, that's not wrong.
10:32The Golf Cabriolet has a crazy charm.
10:34But the copy Jerry brought me back, on the other hand, makes me want to run away when I see the list of problems.
10:39mechanical.
10:40First of all, in terms of waterproofing, it's a major problem.
10:43It's leaking from everywhere.
10:44From the rocker cover to the CV joint boot.
10:46In addition to making this little 4-cylinder engine more reliable, I need to redo the timing belt and put the missing cover back in the
10:52engine compartment.
10:53But our Golf mainly has a problem with power and an unstable idle.
10:57And I'm afraid it might be coming from the KG-tronic injection system.
11:01I also need to take care of the anti-roll engine mount which has been torn off.
11:06I'm going to replace the clutch, the CV joint boot, and take a look at the gearbox linkage.
11:11The aim is to restore smooth reporting.
11:14But as if that weren't enough, the aesthetics will also require a lot of hours of work.
11:19Starting with the entire interior, it has changed.
11:22But for that to happen, Jerry first needs to find us an original one in good condition.
11:26And it's not going to be easy.
11:27We also need to replace the soft top, repaint the bumpers, and fit the US-specific rims.
11:33to be renovated.
11:34In order to regain a beautiful, mirror-like appearance.
11:37In short, we're going to have a lot, a lot of mechanical work to do before we can resell this Golf at its best.
11:42side.
11:45The Golf convertible in the 80s was the queen of its category.
11:49It's simple, it was also the best-selling convertible in the world.
11:53At the same time, it must be said that she has everything going for her.
11:55A look that's recognizable at first glance.
11:58Four proper seats inside and on the phase 2 like ours, a more aggressive look.
12:03We have fender flares, side skirts, wider rims and more enveloping bumpers.
12:08And as for the engine, well, there we find the famous 1.8 from Volkswagen.
12:14The same engine base as the legendary Golf GTI.
12:16Here, in a 95 horsepower version and with a special feature, it is equipped with the famous KG-Tronic injection.
12:24KG-Tronic injection appeared in the early 1970s and was primarily reserved for high-end vehicles.
12:29range.
12:29Mercedes SSL, Porsche 911, Ferrari Testarossa.
12:33The major difference compared to an older injection system, which operates cyclically, is that
12:38It, on the other hand, operates continuously.
12:39In fact, that's where the KG-Tronic case comes from.
12:42It means "continue rich" in German.
12:44Thanks to this, we have a reliable injection system, but above all, a more efficient one.
12:48But for now, our Golf GTI lacks power.
12:51And most importantly, it's yo-yoing in slow motion.
12:53I will therefore dismantle the injection system to check its condition.
12:56But before that, I'm still going to check the condition of the gasoline.
12:59That will be a very good indicator.
13:02Baptiste, could I use a little help?
13:04Do you want to?
13:05We're going to take a look at the fuel level in the tank, if you can turn the ignition on.
13:09Yes.
13:11If our tank is corroded, we will have deposits in the fuel.
13:14This could explain our fuel supply problem.
13:18So, to check it, I disconnect the hose at the outlet of the fuel filter.
13:22I place my container under the outlet and we can start the operation.
13:26Go ahead, turn the ignition on.
13:28When I turn the ignition on, Baptiste powers the entire electrical circuit, including my fuel pump which starts to run.
13:33Thus, the gasoline exits with low pressure.
13:36Okay, you can cut it.
13:39The fuel is very clear, I have no impurities inside.
13:42That means that, a priori, my tank is in good condition.
13:44Now, I have one second thing to check.
13:47The condition of my fuel pump.
13:48Because if I don't have the correct square pressure in my cagetronics, clearly, that could explain the lack
13:52of power.
13:54Okay, I'll take that.
13:58And I'm going to connect directly here.
14:01The role of the fuel pump is to draw fuel from the tank and deliver it
14:06under pressure until injection.
14:08To function correctly, the pressure generated by the pump must be around 5 bars.
14:13And to check if that's the case, I connect my pressure gauge to its outlet.
14:17Okay, go ahead, turn the ignition on.
14:205 bars.
14:21Okay, the fuel pump is working.
14:23That means my problem comes directly from inside the Cagetronics.
14:26And above all, that I'm good at taking everything apart.
14:29And since I'm already dismantling the entire car electronics system, I'll take the opportunity to remove the motor as well.
14:34Géry didn't spare me with an engine that leaks everywhere.
14:37And an injection that malfunctions.
14:38Given the big project ahead of me, I'm taking advantage of Baptiste's help to make some space.
14:43by removing the hood.
14:43We place it on the table.
14:47Perfect.
14:47Okay, I'll leave you alone, thank you.
14:50To dismantle my injection system, I start by removing my air filter.
14:54Next, the 4 hoses connected to the injectors of my Cagetronic.
14:58As well as the fuel supply pipe.
15:00I remove the few screws that attach the housing to the intake.
15:03And I can finally remove the whole thing.
15:09Once my cagetronics is out, I disconnect my water circuit, my radiator, and all the peripherals.
15:19Next, I remove the front wheels.
15:26the universal joints,
15:28and I can finally use my engine hoist to calmly remove the entire engine-gearbox assembly.
15:35Clearly, it's very fatty.
15:37When we take a closer look at our engine,
15:40You can see that there are oil leaks everywhere, at the top, at the bottom.
15:42And what's certain is that I'm not going to get bored.
15:45But for now, I'm going to stay focused on my injection.
15:48We have the famous cagetronics.
15:50It's a rather complicated system, made up of several elements.
15:54The main component is this one, which is called the dosing-distributor.
15:58It has two functions: dosing and dispensing.
16:01We can see that on the top there are four outlets, one for each of the injectors.
16:05We also have a fuel supply right here.
16:08This is how the dosing-dispensing system works on our Gol.
16:12When the engine is running, it sucks in air.
16:14This air pushes on the circular plateau.
16:16The faster I accelerate, the more air enters and the more the platform lifts.
16:20This platform is mounted like a scale.
16:22And through leverage, the movement is transmitted to the distributor.
16:26More specifically, to a piston that is located inside.
16:29The role of the piston is to regulate the amount of fuel sent to the injectors.
16:33For this purpose, the piston is equipped with small slots.
16:36There are as many slots as there are cylinders to feed.
16:38When the piston is in its lowest position, meaning that little air is entering,
16:42The slots are almost closed.
16:44Therefore, the fuel flow rate is very low.
16:46And the more air that comes in, the higher the piston rises.
16:48As it rises, it opens up the slots more and more fuel reaches the injectors.
16:54We have another room right here that is very important.
16:57The regulator for the warming phases.
16:59It will manage the fuel pressure reaching the engine based on the temperature.
17:03And the last part that makes up our injection system is located on the engine.
17:08Right here.
17:08This is the cold start injector.
17:11In fact, it's exactly like a choke on a carbureted engine.
17:15Our dispenser, well when I pick it up, I can clearly see that there is no play.
17:18And above all, he is truly free.
17:20So in my opinion, the problem lies more with the piston.
17:23And if it's seized up, it means we're not getting the right amount of fuel.
17:27in our engine.
17:27The problem is that it's a real bureaucratic nightmare.
17:30So, I'm going to have it checked by a specialist.
17:33I put everything in a box and I'm going to drop it off for him.
17:45There, I have an appointment with Cyril, an injection specialist.
17:48Its mission is to check the condition of all the elements of our KG-tronic system.
17:52Because it requires very specific equipment, which I have already acquired in the workshop.
17:56I hope he will be able to fix the fuel injection on our Golf Cabriolet.
17:59And that it won't cost us too much.
18:01Because this kind of operation can quickly eat into our profit margin.
18:05Hi, Cyril.
18:06How are you doing ?
18:06Listen, I'm doing well, and you?
18:07It's fine, it's fine, perfect.
18:08As promised.
18:09Will this bring KG-tronic?
18:10I took everything from you.
18:11Did you take everything?
18:11Well, listen, that's great, we'll go straight from the workshop.
18:13Okay, well listen, I know you.
18:14And then we'll check.
18:15Here we go.
18:18So, let me introduce you to Nicolas.
18:19He's the one who's going to take care of your dispenser.
18:21Okay.
18:22Hi, Nicolas.
18:23I'll leave you both to work.
18:24It works, thank you very much.
18:25Thank you so much.
18:26Okay, so, I don't know if Cyril explained it to you a little.
18:29No, tell me.
18:30On our Golf, we clearly have an idling problem.
18:32Okay.
18:33And there is a lack of power.
18:34All right.
18:35I checked the fuel pump.
18:36I have 5 bars.
18:37I checked the fuel.
18:38It is clear, it is clean.
18:39So, in principle, there's no problem with the tank.
18:41So, I think our problem comes directly from the injection system.
18:43Okay, well listen, we'll start by dismantling the dispenser on the tray first.
18:46Okay.
18:46This way, we can then go and test it directly on the bench with the regulator.
18:50We're going to remove the studios.
18:50Finally, we will be able to control everything in the block.
18:52Okay, we'll separate everything, we'll do a thorough check.
18:53Yeah, that's it.
18:54Well, listen, if I can give you a hand, let's go.
18:56Of course.
18:58Nicolas will focus on the regulator, as well as the KG-tronic doser of our golf cam.
19:04Because it is on these two elements that he generally observes failures on the injection system.
19:08So, once everything is disassembled, it's off to the diagnostic bench.
19:12Okay, so the bench is here.
19:14It's happening there.
19:15So, we're going to place this one here.
19:18So how does it work then?
19:19Here, we will simulate our probe platform.
19:21All right.
19:21So, in fact, we're going to push on our piston to be able to see our flow rates.
19:24Yeah, you're directly connected to a micrometer, so you can see it raised to the nearest hundredth.
19:27Exactly.
19:28And then, in relation to the data that the manufacturer gives me regarding the reference,
19:31There, I can then control my data rates.
19:32Who it is that will be is displayed on the machine over there.
19:34Yeah, down there.
19:35Ah yeah, so we need to have all the data for each case first.
19:37It's a mess.
19:38I imagine so.
19:39Okay, well, let's go.
19:40Okay.
19:43Nicolas connects the regulator and the doser to his diagnostic bench.
19:48We turn on the test bench to pressurize it.
19:51To begin the test, Nicolas sets his bench to 1.5 bar.
19:54A pressure that corresponds to our 1.8 liters.
19:57Next, he adjusts the piston height according to the engine speed he wants to simulate.
20:01Here, at low speed in this case.
20:03Then, we observe the flow rate sent to the motor by each supply conduit.
20:08We're not doing too badly.
20:09All right.
20:10We'll do the second one.
20:13And what's needed is that all 4 are identical in any case.
20:15That's it.
20:17So there, you see, on number 4, there's a bit of slack to climb.
20:20So this one, it could cause us a little trouble when it's running slowly.
20:22That could actually be our idling problem.
20:24Absolutely.
20:24It would be coming from cylinder 4.
20:26Yeah.
20:26The good news is that, in principle, our piston is not seized.
20:30The question remains: what is causing my lack of power at high revs?
20:33So now we're moving on to high flow rates to get the large ball that's there.
20:37All right.
20:38Then, we'll do the same thing here, we'll check.
20:39We're at about 90 here.
20:42All right.
20:4390 cm3.
20:4595 is not bad.
20:4890.
20:50And 4th.
20:52However, that's not going well.
20:544th, he's a bit sluggish.
20:54It's always the 4th one that gives us a little bit of trouble.
20:58And comparing with manufacturer data, this confirms our lack of high-speed throughput.
21:03Each injector will need to send 95 cm3 of fuel.
21:06However, my supply line only provides 80.
21:10An under-supply explains my lack of power and also our problem with an unstable idle.
21:15So how can we fix that?
21:17We can adjust it; we'll try to adjust it directly from here.
21:19All right.
21:19There are screws that can change the flow rate.
21:21That's it.
21:22The flow rate can be adjusted directly from below.
21:23So now we're going to try to fix it.
21:26So, it's all very soft.
21:27Okay, this is really finally happening, I feel.
21:29To get there, gently.
21:30So, when we come to turn, we're there, we check the 4, we go back, we check the 4.
21:34We need to get up to around 95 like the others.
21:38Ah yeah, when you're filming, you really see life rising.
21:4290 and there, 95.
21:45Is that all?
21:46It doesn't make much difference.
21:47Ah yeah, the small screw means we have less fuel flow on the 4th gear, we lose some
21:50power.
21:50Yeah, all it takes is for there to be some impurity that has passed through, something.
21:53It really doesn't make much of a difference at all.
21:55That's great, so it's all over.
21:57What we can possibly do is change the seals inside.
22:00All right.
22:01Double-check all settings to make sure everything is correct.
22:03Okay.
22:04And then afterwards, normally, you start again with something that's clean.
22:06Yeah, great.
22:06Anyway, that's what we want, a major, major overhaul of the injection system.
22:09Flawless.
22:10Great, I imagine it's going to take you some time to do all that.
22:12It won't take 5 minutes, so I suggest you come back later.
22:15Okay, perfect.
22:16Well, listen, I'll let you finish.
22:17It's going well.
22:18Thank you, Nicolas.
22:18Please.
22:20A complete overhaul of our injection system takes approximately 2 hours.
22:24I'm just afraid the bill might be a bit steep.
22:28And that's all good.
22:29Is that it, finished?
22:30That's it.
22:31Great, it's perfect.
22:33Okay, how much do I owe you?
22:34900 euros.
22:35900 euros, well listen, I'll pass that on to Jerry.
22:37No worries.
22:38Thanks again, Cyril.
22:38Thank you.
22:39See you soon, bye.
22:57Before putting my engine back in, with its completely overhauled injection system, in our Golf, I'm going to take care of the leaks first.
23:02of oil.
23:03And clearly, our little 4-cylinder engine wasn't spared.
23:06I have a leak at the oil pan, I have a leak at the rocker cover, a
23:10Modine leak, a leak at the gearbox outlet.
23:13In short, it's leaking from everywhere.
23:15And it's this kind of small detail that can quickly cause big damage.
23:18I'll start by taking care of the oil pan.
23:23It's true that when it arrived at the garage, the engine of this golf was a real sieve.
23:28No choice.
23:29Therefore, I need to replace all the damaged seals.
23:31Starting with the oil pan.
23:35Yeah, well, it's not very clean in there.
23:38I'll start by giving it a good cleaning at the fountain.
23:43The crankcase is the engine's oil reservoir.
23:45That is to say, it contains approximately 4 liters of oil which circulates throughout the engine.
23:49So inevitably, after a while, it gets clogged up.
23:54To seal my engine, I bought all the necessary gaskets.
23:59Rocker cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets and oil seals.
24:02And in total, it cost me 72 euros.
24:04Honestly, it's a small price to pay to fix our leak problem.
24:07And I'm going to take advantage of it too.
24:09I'm going to do the whole timing belt replacement and I'm also going to replace the clutch.
24:12And I'm going to start with the oil pan gasket.
24:15Rather than replacing the original paper gasket,
24:18I preferred to buy a rubber seal with a metal reinforcement inside.
24:23The original gaskets are made of paper.
24:26Paper has the advantage of absorbing oil and swelling.
24:29But over time, it can become saturated and consequently, it no longer performs its function well.
24:33The advantage of the new rubber seals is that they are more durable.
24:36And most importantly, they last much longer.
24:39Normally, we'll be left alone for a while.
24:43My crankcase has been repositioned on our 4-cylinder engine.
24:49Now, I'm moving on to the leak at the rocker cover.
24:52To access it, I turn my engine over and start by removing the hoses.
24:56The oil, coolant, and vacuum sniffer
25:01before removing my rocker cover.
25:04With his joint clearly looking unhappy, it was time to intervene.
25:08And here's my new seal.
25:10When you look at it, you can immediately see that it is very different from the old one.
25:14Firstly, it's made of plastic, whereas the old one was made of cork.
25:18But most importantly, it is in one piece.
25:20Whereas before, in fact, I had three parts.
25:23My cork seal, a rubber seal right here and another one here at the cable shaft.
25:29And that's precisely where we have a problem.
25:31At the point where the cork seal and the rubber seal meet, this is always where we
25:36there's a leak.
25:37And the advantage with the new generation seals is that I only have one seal.
25:42So, at the connection point, I have a perfect seal.
25:46In short, with this, we won't have any leaks for a long time.
25:51The risk with a rocker cover leak is that oil will drip onto the manifold.
25:55exhaust.
25:56And at full load, the gases passing through it reach temperatures close to 800 degrees.
26:00So the oil can actually catch fire.
26:02And there, obviously, I don't need to draw you a picture, it's a complete disaster.
26:08The rocker cover is done.
26:10Now I can take care of the leak at the modine.
26:13The modine is this piece right here.
26:16It is located between the engine block and the oil filter.
26:19And it has two functions.
26:21The first function is to quickly raise the oil temperature.
26:24To ensure the engine is in optimal operating conditions.
26:28And the second function is to cool this oil using coolant.
26:33I'll take it apart and show you how it works.
26:37First, I unscrew the oil filter.
26:41Then, the hoses.
26:44And its fixing bolt.
26:46And there it is, the famous modine.
26:49Actually, it's a mini heat exchanger.
26:51In the middle, I have an oil circulation system.
26:54It goes through the oil filter and back into the engine.
26:57However, on the entire outer part, it is coolant that circulates.
27:02When I start my engine, the coolant will heat up much faster than the oil.
27:07As a result, the liquid will help to heat the oil.
27:10However, once my engine is fully warmed up, the oil tends to always be a little more
27:15higher in temperature than the coolant.
27:17In this case, it's the opposite.
27:19The coolant cools the oil.
27:21Thanks to this system, we can maintain an oil temperature of around 110 degrees.
27:26And that's ideal for having good lubrication inside our engine.
27:30Clearly, the problem was quickly identified there.
27:33You can see that the small seal right here is quite damaged.
27:36And luckily, I ordered a new one.
27:41By changing this O-ring, in addition to fixing the leak, I also eliminate any risk of engine overheating.
27:48When my oil cooler is back in place, I obviously put on a brand new oil filter.
27:54As for the leaks on the engine, we're starting to get better.
27:56Now I can tackle replacing the timing belt.
28:01So, first off, remove the accessory belt.
28:06Also driven by the crankshaft, the accessory belt drives the peripherals and passes in front of the timing belt.
28:12It is therefore necessary to remove it to free the crankshaft pulley and remove the cover.
28:19And here is our distribution.
28:22The role of the timing belt is to synchronize the crankshaft with the camshaft.
28:27Basically, the movement of the pistons is coordinated with that of the valves.
28:30And here, on our belt, we can see that we have a small line along its entire length.
28:34In my opinion, it's simply a cover that was reassembled incorrectly.
28:37But anyway, we're not going to take any risks, we're going to replace everything.
28:41Before touching the timing belt, you must first align the timing marks on the camshaft.
28:45and the crankshaft.
28:46These small marks on the pulleys are crucial to ensure that each valve and piston is correctly positioned.
28:51Because at the slightest misalignment, the pistons hit the valves.
28:55And that's a guaranteed engine failure.
28:58Before installing a new belt, I'm going to take care of changing the Speed Crankshaft seal.
29:05In addition to keeping the oil inside, this seal also helps prevent dirt from
29:10penetrate the engine block.
29:11To remove it, I use a flathead screwdriver to pry it off, being careful not to scratch the crankshaft oil.
29:22To install the new one, I make sure it is perfectly aligned and straight to guarantee a
29:27uniform pressure on the shaft.
29:31I can now fit a new belt and I'm doing my timing belt adjustment.
29:37Distribution complete.
29:39I'm good at that aspect of the engine.
29:41Now, I still have to do the clutch and my gearbox output leak.
29:44Yeah, I still have work to do.
29:57I've finished my engine.
29:59I reinstalled the timing belt, replaced the clutch and reassembled the gearbox.
30:04Now I can take care of my anti-tip support.
30:07This support is essential.
30:09In fact, it prevents the engine from moving back and forth during acceleration and braking.
30:13It is fixed to the front of the engine and connected directly to the crossmember.
30:17And that's where we have a problem.
30:19Right where the support is attached, the inserts have torn out.
30:22The real solution, well, would be to replace the entire crossmember.
30:25But clearly, it's a huge undertaking.
30:28So I thought about it a bit and found another solution.
30:32What I'm going to do, well, I'm going to use a steel plate as reinforcement.
30:36I'm going to weld it directly onto the crossmember.
30:38Next, I'm going to drill it and weld two nuts behind it, so I can re-fuse my support.
30:44First step, cut the plate.
30:48If I manage to repair our engine mount with a small homemade fix, we'll have won everything.
30:54I cut a 25cm x 7cm rectangle from my 3mm thick sheet of metal.
30:59with the help of my angle grinder.
31:03Next, I use my anti-tip support as a guide and drill my two holes.
31:15Now I can position my nuts.
31:20And I put screws inside, so that it doesn't move when I weld.
31:25It's thanks to these screws welded directly to my sheet metal plate that our 1800 injection engine should no longer...
31:31to move one iota.
31:34Now I need to weld all of this onto the crossmember.
31:39First, I do a thorough stripping to get a clean surface, and once that's done, I can
31:46to attach my new fastening system.
31:54And there you have it, it's welded.
31:56And that's solid stuff.
31:58Now, a little bit of rust inhibitor and it will be perfect.
32:01There, thank you!
32:04This anti-corrosion product also serves as a primer for the new black paint that I'm going to spray on to obtain
32:10a very clean finish.
32:13There, now all I have to do is tighten everything up properly.
32:19Anti-tip support repaired.
32:21And what's more, it's sturdy.
32:23With that, the idiot who heard Jerry at every gear change is ancient history.
32:40Are you okay, Aurélien?
32:41Are you okay, Aurélien?
32:42Well, you didn't come indoors, did you?
32:44You don't have it, I think it has a beautiful interior.
32:46Imagine, they're going to deliver it to us this afternoon.
32:47Do you have any photos?
32:48Ah, if you want to see, look at this.
32:50Neat, huh?
32:50Ah, but he's super handsome.
32:51And that's going to change her, right?
32:52Oh yeah, totally, man.
32:54800 euros, that's quite a lot.
32:55Oh yeah, that's quite a budget, though.
32:56Yeah, but honestly, it's magnificent.
32:57It is in perfect condition.
32:59Well, that's cool, you did great.
33:00Yeah.
33:00Okay, so were you able to get the engine back together?
33:01Look, come and see.
33:02I came back up, but above all, I did everything, you know.
33:05Timing belt, clutch, all leaks.
33:06And I can tell you, there were leaks, huh.
33:08Not bad, the injection.
33:09The injection has been done too.
33:10She's here.
33:11All right.
33:11Piston calibration, replacement of all seals.
33:14On the other hand, that was expensive.
33:17But was it expensive, or was it really, really expensive?
33:19Well, I'd say expensive.
33:20900 euros, what.
33:22No, dear, dear.
33:23We're really pushing the limits here, aren't we?
33:24Ah, honestly, it's fine.
33:25In addition, we're doing well on the mechanical side.
33:28Timing belt, clutch, all the seals, it's costing me 300 euros.
33:31But we mustn't forget that there's still the condom.
33:33There are the giants to renovate, there's still a bit of work to do, though.
33:35I took the bumpers off the car for you, by the way.
33:37With this, I can take them, then?
33:38Yeah, that's it, it's not...
33:39Ah, well, great.
33:39Okay, let's go.
33:41Well, what do I have left?
33:42Install the headlights.
33:46Our Golf Cabriolet is finally starting to regain its iconic Youngtimer charm, at least mechanically.
33:52When I removed the engine, I redid all the sealing on our 1.8, replacing the gaskets and the
33:58consumables, not forgetting distribution.
34:00And I also changed the clutch, taking care to adjust the pedal free play.
34:05The injection system has also been completely revised.
34:09No more unstable idling and lack of power, our 4-cylinder engine is running smoothly again, just like in '88.
34:15Regarding the clunk Jerry heard during gear changes, especially in first gear, I was able to make a part
34:21reinforcement to fix the anti-tipping bracket.
34:24And thanks to that, we solved the problem and made a nice saving in the process.
34:28But before we can put our collector's item back on the market and hope to resell it at a good price, we still need to...
34:33having to invest a lot of money and spend a lot of time in the workshop.
34:37I need to replace the leaking CV joint boot, and take a look at the linkage...
34:41gearbox in order to achieve smooth gear changes.
34:44And if we take care of the entire aesthetic aspect, that's a major undertaking.
34:48I'm going to have to install the new original interior that Jerry found.
34:53As well as the two bumpers when they come back from the body shop.
34:57And if we want to appeal to collectors, we absolutely have to replace the convertible top and find
35:01a specialist capable of creating a beautiful mirror-like finish on rims.
35:05In short, there's still work to be done.
35:07But if you want a chance to make a profit with this Golf Cabriolet, there's no
35:11The choice.
35:11It has to live up to the myth.
35:17I replaced the tripod and CV joint boot.
35:20In total, it cost me 60 euros, but at least we're safe on that front.
35:24Now I can take care of another problem with our Golf Cabriolet.
35:28We have a small problem with the gearbox linkage.
35:31She's gained some momentum.
35:33And at this point, clearly, it's just unbearable.
35:38Firstly, we have gears that tend to catch.
35:41But most importantly, when I grab the lever, there's a lot of play.
35:44Whether laterally or longitudinally.
35:47This is a known problem on Golf Cabriolet models.
35:49I'll take everything apart and show you.
35:52The first thing to do is remove the gear lever gaiter.
35:56Below, we find the cylinder block which serves to hold and center the linkage rod
36:00right at the lever's exit, while absorbing engine and road vibrations.
36:05Once the bolt holding the assembly is unscrewed, I go underneath for the rest of the operations.
36:13I start by dismantling the angle drive.
36:15It is a lever that acts as a hinge between the linkage and the gear selector.
36:19And I finish by placing the crossbar.
36:22All I have to do is drive the car back down to retrieve the last component of the system.
36:27And here's the gear lever.
36:30This is all that makes up the gearbox linkage.
36:33Its role is to transform the movements of my hand and transmit them to the gearbox.
36:39For that, we have three rooms.
36:41The lever, the bar and here, the right-angle drive.
36:44How does it work?
36:46It's quite simple.
36:47In fact, we have two movements to transmit.
36:49Transverse movements, to select the correct ratio.
36:53And longitudinal movements, from first to second for example.
36:56For lateral movements, when I move my lever, you can see that it has a direct action on the small
37:01retulus which is located here.
37:02This reticle is fixed by a billet directly to my gearbox.
37:06And for longitudinal movements, when I move the gear lever forward and backward,
37:11It goes up and down and you can see that the little ball here is moving.
37:14By moving this ball, it moves the lever located here, which is also connected to
37:18the gearbox.
37:19The problem with our Golf is that we have a lot of small ball joints and small bushings that are
37:24made of plastic and rubber.
37:26And all of this, over time, tends to wear out and become loose.
37:29If you look more closely, you can even see that here, the small ring has completely disappeared.
37:34And we have a lot of play.
37:35This results in a very imprecise box and it's very unpleasant.
37:39Fortunately, there is a solution: a repair kit.
37:42It costs 40 euros and thanks to this, we will get a gear lever like the original one.
37:48Guide bushings, ball joints, clips, pins, clevises – a repair kit like this contains everything you need.
37:54to refurbish our system.
37:56Starting with the bushings on my right-angle drive.
38:00And there you have it, two little plastic rings and now I have a right-angle drive that no longer has any
38:05all about the game.
38:06Okay, the gear lever, there, that's the whole part that needs replacing.
38:14So, I remove the gear knob.
38:17I'm taking everything apart to check my cylinder block.
38:20Blower, gain, spring, clips.
38:23And upon closer inspection,
38:25Well then, above the guide, it's quite worn as well.
38:29Here's the new one.
38:33So.
38:34That's much better.
38:37With all this, the issues of creaking gears felt while driving should be behind us.
38:42To be sure, I just have to put everything back together on our Golf Cabriolet.
38:45Yeah, it takes time to deal with gearbox linkage.
38:49Now all I have to do is test if everything works.
38:52Everything is back up.
38:54Now all that's left is to test it.
38:57Okay.
38:58I'll go first.
39:00Ah yeah, that's much more precise.
39:03Secondly.
39:04On the third.
39:07Nothing like it was before.
39:10Well, there you have it.
39:11It's resolved, though.
39:12We have regained precise guidance of the gearbox.
39:15And what's more, it didn't cost us much.
39:26While Aurélien takes care of the mechanics on our Golf,
39:28Well, I'm going to take care of the aesthetic part.
39:31Our convertible, which is a US version,
39:33We have rims with a polished mirror finish.
39:35This is absolutely not common.
39:36And that's the kind of detail that absolutely won't escape the notice of those who connect with others.
39:43So, to aim for the top of the market value at the time of resale,
39:45that is to say, around 13,000 euros,
39:47We really need to have rims that are flawless.
39:49That's why I'm heading to Benjamin's place.
39:51He is a specialist in rim restoration.
39:53I hope we get a great result.
39:55And most importantly, it won't cost me too much.
39:57Anyway, I'll fix you in 30 seconds.
39:59I just arrived.
40:05Benjamin.
40:06Hi, Jerry.
40:07Hi.
40:08How are you ?
40:08And you ?
40:08Alright.
40:09Here, I'm bringing back the little golf rims as promised.
40:12The famous ones.
40:13Please note, I insist.
40:14I really want to see my sneakers shine in it.
40:16There's a lot of work to be done.
40:17There's a lot of work to be done.
40:18Are the other three in the same condition?
40:20The other three are in the same condition.
40:21OK, that works.
40:23So where would we start?
40:24We'll start by checking this one to see if it's stolen.
40:26if it is not cracked.
40:28Okay, I'm with you.
40:28Are you following me?
40:29Here we go.
40:31Whoa, it hasn't even started yet and I'm already not very reassured.
40:34If we also have to show off our rims, the final bill is likely to be too bad.
40:38Okay, I'll hand you the baby.
40:40THANKS.
40:41It's your turn, Benjamin.
40:42We start by putting it on the axis.
40:46To check, we'll see if they rotate.
40:48So now, there's no more control.
40:49In the old style, visually, quite simply?
40:51Visually, it's old-fashioned.
40:52As soon as you see any movement, it means your rim has naturally been stolen.
40:57Ouch.
40:57So, what does that tell us?
40:59Do you see any movement?
41:01So, just by looking at it like that—well, you have a better eye than me, but I don't see it.
41:04Nothing.
41:04If you don't see anything, that's a good sign.
41:06Okay, that's perfect.
41:07What's the next step?
41:09Next step, we're going to clean the rim.
41:11Okay, I'm with you.
41:14Depolluting means removing all the extra elements around the rim.
41:16such as balancing counterweights, cabochons or clips.
41:20But here, on the rim of our Golf Cabriolet, there is only this small valve to remove.
41:24That's an easy step.
41:25Easy step.
41:26Okay, let's continue.
41:28The rest takes place on this machine.
41:30Here, Benjamin will immerse our rim in a very specific alkali-based mixture.
41:34an ammonia derivative that heats to 85 degrees for two hours.
41:39The time it takes to have a coffee or three.
41:45Jerry?
41:46Yeah ?
41:47Are we good?
41:47Ah, taste it!
41:49Okay, so, two hours of time, I think it's perfect, right?
41:52Exactly.
41:53Good.
41:53SO ?
41:53I'm going to advise you to take a small step back.
41:57Oh yeah?
41:57Yeah.
41:58Ah, those products, they're a bit toxic, though.
41:59Well, that doesn't smell very good.
42:02Oh yeah?
42:04Ah, there's no trace of paint or dirt left now?
42:08No, she's been taken down, that's all.
42:11Nothing more.
42:12Now we're heading to the sandblasting booth.
42:15Here, Benjamin will simply perfect the work begun in the chemical bath
42:19by sending a mixture of water and sand under high pressure.
42:23SO ?
42:24There you go.
42:27Rinsed, sandblasted, all that's left is to shot-blast it.
42:29So, all that's left is to shot-blast now, then?
42:30Exactly.
42:32Shot blasting involves projecting thousands of stainless steel pellets onto the surface of the rim.
42:36in order to standardize the material.
42:38Here, give me your hand.
42:39Yeah.
42:40They're little marbles, thousands of marbles, that's all.
42:43Amazing.
42:43Okay, let's move on, let's see the result.
42:45Come on.
42:47In addition to cleaning, Benjamin explains to me that shot blasting helps to strengthen the material.
42:52This effect is called pinning, because the impacts of the balls induce compressive stresses.
42:56and slightly harden the surface, so our rim will be even more resistant.
43:04Oh yeah, wow...
43:05So, there you have it, a surface condition that is ideal for painting.
43:08Yeah.
43:09Eager to see what happens next.
43:10Come on.
43:11Michael, am I with you?
43:11Yeah, I'm closing this.
43:14Before being painted, our rim will go through an automated circuit.
43:18It starts with a first pass in the oven at 200 degrees for 15 minutes in order to release all the gases
43:24that it contains.
43:25Next, Benjamin sprays powder paint onto our rim using his electrostatic gun.
43:31Made from resin, pigments and additives, the powder is electrostatically attracted to the rim
43:36and it settles there evenly and, most importantly, without color.
43:41Great !
43:41The fact that it has a solid color already makes it much prettier.
43:45Exactly.
43:45So, if I understand correctly, here, with the heat, still on the rim, here, it's almost instantly dry, here,
43:51SO.
43:52There, we're going to put it back in the steaming chamber.
43:55Ah, okay.
43:56Bake for 45 minutes to polymerize all the powder.
43:59All right.
44:01This US version golf cap rim is definitely worth the effort.
44:05After another 45-minute stint in the oven, it's off to the digital control tower.
44:09A machine that rotates our rim at 1000 revolutions per minute for resurfacing.
44:14The idea is to remove a few tenths of a millimeter of material
44:17in order to obtain the ideal base for the final step, mirror polishing.
44:26To do this, Benjamin uses an orbital sander equipped with 600 grit sandpaper to start.
44:32Then, our expert increases the grit at each stage to go from an abrasive grit to a very fine grit.
44:38Honestly, what a job it is to refurbish one rim, and there are still three more to go.
44:43So, hair.
44:46Yes.
44:47This is all taking a very long time.
44:48It's a lot of work, a lot of egg-handedness, but the result is simply splendid.
44:52No, well thank you.
44:53What price did we agree on?
44:54250 euros per day.
44:551000 euros.
44:56Exactly.
44:56I'm not even trying to negotiate.
44:57Given the result, I'm extremely happy.
44:59Once you've finished that, give me a call?
45:01With great pleasure.
45:01Think of yourself well.
45:02Hi.
45:02Okay, bye, bye.
45:07Well, 1000 euros, indeed, that's a large sum.
45:09But our used rims in good condition are impossible to find.
45:12And that, at the time of resale, is a real added value.
45:26The new hood was installed by the cellarman.
45:28And the result is simply magnificent.
45:30This blue goes really well with the grey of the car.
45:33It cost us 2500 euros.
45:35The biggest expense on this car.
45:37But aesthetics are super important on our Golf Cabriolet.
45:41In fact, that's why I also want to replace the entire interior.
45:45Clearly, it's not very fresh.
45:47But Jerry delivered.
45:49He found me a complete interior.
45:51Front seat, rear bench seat, door panel.
45:54Now all that's left is to install everything.
45:57The years have really not been kind to these seats, which I enjoy taking apart.
46:04The same applies to door interiors.
46:07We're very tired too.
46:09Off to the dumpster and without regret.
46:13Make way for the new interior.
46:14Which still cost us 800 euros.
46:16But frankly, at first glance, there's no comparison.
46:21It's much nicer this way.
46:23Okay, bumpers.
46:25Johan, can you come and help me with the bumpers?
46:30They look like they just came from the body shop.
46:32So, there's no question of being clever by trying to put them back up on your own.
46:35The painting still cost us 300 euros.
46:37So, now is not the time to damage them.
46:40And all I have to do now is install the four wheels.
46:49And there you have it, it's finished.
46:53When this Golfin convertible arrived at the workshop, it had a lot of defects.
46:57The kind that might scare off collectors.
47:00An engine covered in oil, rough gear changes, a problem with the injection system, not to mention all the...
47:06work on aesthetics.
47:07But we were right to believe in it.
47:08Now, with its completely rebuilt legs, brand new soft top, interior in perfect condition, and all the work done
47:15In terms of mechanics, it has gained at least 30 years.
47:18There, it has once again become the little collector's item that we would all like to have in our garage.
47:22An iconic car that's fun to drive.
47:25I'm just eager for a bit of sunshine so I can try it out before Jerry
47:30don't sell it.
47:34Our Golfin convertible has regained all its charm as a mythical Youngtimer from the 80s.
47:39But to achieve this result, we had to spend some money.
47:42To its purchase price of 5200 euros, you must add 900 euros for the overhaul of the injection system.
47:48Electronic cache from a specialist.
47:5172 euros for a gasket kit intended for sealing the engine,
47:5568 euros for the timing belt kit and its used cover,
47:5895 euros for the clutch kit,
48:0160 euros for a new carbon bellows,
48:0419 euros to replace the worn parts of the gearbox linkage
48:07and 100 euros to get our convertible's wheel alignment done.
48:10That covers the mechanics, but the aesthetics were much more expensive.
48:15800 euros to get a brand new, immaculate interior.
48:181000 euros for polishing the rims,
48:202500 euros for a new convertible top and its installation via a sink,
48:25300 euros for painting the scratched bumpers
48:27and 320 euros for new tires.
48:30In the end, our beautiful Golf 1 convertible cost us just under 11,500 euros.
48:35and will have required 31 hours of work.
48:38It was a huge undertaking, but we succeeded in our mission.
48:40and we can now hope to resell it at its highest market value.
48:43But first, we're going to test if we've done a good job on our superb German Youngtimer.
48:54The weather isn't exceptional today, but it still makes for a nice little walk.
48:58What I keep telling myself is that we did the right thing by replacing the convertible top.
49:00This car is still incredible, but what a formula, man.
49:03Everything is there, basically.
49:04A timeless design, a small, robust, reliable engine,
49:08a small cable where you can put 4 people, family, friends.
49:12That's because, at the time, it was the best-selling small cable in the world.
49:17It was a strong performance at Volkswagen.
49:20They're visionaries, you know, guys.
49:21I think that with this US version, you see, the legs are polished, the little defects,
49:24The chrome everywhere makes them look a bit exclusive.
49:27You know there aren't many like that in Europe.
49:28That's what I liked about it, that's partly why I bought it too.
49:30I suspect you didn't buy it because of the mechanical condition.
49:33I remind you that the engine had leaks everywhere.
49:35If you buy this car at full price, even though there's absolutely nothing that needs doing to it,
49:39Where are we going to find our profit margin, man?
49:41Yes, well, I'm not saying that, but there was still a lot of work to do there.
49:44Then again, we were lucky that the injection system was repairable.
49:47It still cost 200 bucks.
49:48Yes, but in this case, the future buyer is set for a long time.
49:51Yeah, I agree with you.
49:52This car, frankly, it's regained all its capabilities.
49:55The 95 horsepower, they're definitely there.
49:58Ah!
49:58Now you're making me happy, you see.
50:00Oh yeah!
50:01It's progressing well.
50:02Yeah, right.
50:05You know, when I look at it, this car?
50:07Yeah.
50:07I think my wife might actually like it.
50:09For a short trial or for everyday use?
50:11Well, for everyday use, really.
50:13By the way, how much are you asking for it?
50:14Well, a little cave like that, super rare US version.
50:17I think we're at 13,000.
50:18Oh yeah, 13,000 euros is quite a lot.
50:19Oh yeah, so, are you still interested in her?
50:21Yeah, no, no, we'll say, we'll say, we'll say.
50:30If there's one small convertible that has marked an entire generation, well, it's the Gold Wing
50:34from Volkswagen.
50:3550 years later, I can tell you that it holds a special place in the hearts of collectors.
50:38So when, in addition, you have a US version, with all these little specificities, well, you aspire to this car.
50:44We did a lot of mechanical work, we also paid attention to the aesthetics, and I can tell you, the calls
50:48have really had an influence.
50:50So I placed an ad at 13,500 euros and the most responsive person was Stéphanie.
50:54We're going to see what she thinks of our fundraising.
50:58So, Stéphanie, do you like her?
50:59Yes.
50:59Is she as beautiful as she is in the photo?
51:01So, I admit I had a little doubt because photos are often very effective at selling things.
51:05And then afterwards, we might be disappointed.
51:06But I'm not disappointed at all, she's really beautiful.
51:08Are you scoring a point?
51:09We begin with a point.
51:10Okay, so this little combination with the grey bodywork, the paint, and the blue soft top, that'll...
51:14go ?
51:14Well, I like it a lot.
51:16So, where I'm surprised, the rims, mirror polished, they look super chic, very classy.
51:21That's the small detail you noticed, though.
51:23I don't know if you're aware of that, then.
51:24This car is a US version.
51:26So, the goal was to make it very beautiful, aesthetically, because it is
51:29A convertible, that's normal.
51:31But it was also about highlighting all those little specifics, including the mirror-polished rims, exactly.
51:37You did the right thing.
51:38Second point, that's not bad.
51:40Another important point is that the convertible top is brand new.
51:42Well, you're going to tell me, a convertible is made for putting the top down.
51:44But you never know, it's a little dig that falls.
51:46All that's left is to put the convertible top back on and you can move forward safely and securely.
51:50Above all.
51:51Go ahead, look.
51:52But we'll open it, since we're talking about it.
51:54Here, a quick flick of the wrist.
51:55Just to lift?
51:57Exactly.
51:57Okay.
51:58And there you have it.
51:59And all that's left to do is open it.
52:03So.
52:04That's fast, isn't it?
52:05It's easy.
52:06And then, all you have to do is let your hair blow in the wind.
52:08I suggest we get settled in.
52:09That's my dream, with my hair blowing in the wind.
52:10Me too.
52:11It had been that way for years.
52:15That's him, the small cedar shop, in very good condition.
52:17We got some seats back, some sporty seats.
52:19These are the same seats that were in the Golf GTI.
52:22That was still very important, because the original interior is a little bit damaged.
52:25So, it's crazy to think that she's from '88.
52:27It is really very well preserved.
52:29A small detail that makes all the difference, obviously.
52:30Once again, this is a US version.
52:31It is indicated in miles.
52:33And we're still talking kilometers.
52:34The small gearbox guide has also been redone.
52:36The linkage.
52:37And that leads us, by the way, to the engine.
52:39Are we going to buy an eye?
52:40Here we go.
52:40The small opening is right there in front of you, at your feet.
52:45And there you have it.
52:46This little 1800 K-electronic injection engine, which is in perfect condition, obviously.
52:51Because Aurélien had a good interview.
52:53He replaced the clutch.
52:55He did the distribution.
52:56He sealed the engine.
52:58In short, there's absolutely nothing more that can be done on this engine.
53:01And on the phone, you told me that the injection system had been revised, is that right?
53:04Yes, the injection system, actually.
53:05So, it was reviewed by a professional.
53:06So, once again, all you have to do is sleep soundly.
53:09All that's left to do is close the hood, start the car and go for a drive.
53:12That was my goal, because I'm not very handy.
53:15So, the idea is just to turn the key and go show off.
53:18I think this car was made for you.
53:20So, we've reached a crucial moment.
53:25It seems to suit you.
53:26And from now on, Stephanie, things are going to be super easy.
53:30Very, very simple indeed, because we're going to negotiate, we're going to discuss the price.
53:33Oh dear.
53:34She wants to negotiate.
53:35She wants to negotiate.
53:36I was going to say, we take a little pen, we sign a little check for 13,500 euros and he...
53:41'Now all that's left is to go for a walk.
53:42It's so simple.
53:43No, no, no.
53:44For me, it's going to be very simple.
53:45I offer you 12,000 euros.
53:46And I have the check and I'll sign it right away.
53:48Ah, you're really straightforward, aren't you?
53:50You're super straightforward.
53:5112,000 euros, but no.
53:53My accountant isn't going to agree.
53:55Neither did Aurélien.
53:55He did a lot of work on the car, though.
53:57Just a little extra effort.
53:59Little.
53:59I'm willing to make a small effort.
54:0112,500 euros.
54:03It's really a very small effort.
54:05You told me it would be a very small effort.
54:06It's tough.
54:06I listened to you.
54:07You told me it would be a very small effort.
54:08There is no other model like this, a US model as beautiful as this one with zero mechanical parts.
54:13Well, you know, normally when I sell houses, I don't budge on price.
54:16But honestly, you're surprising me here.
54:19Your arguments are very good.
54:20I'm OK with 13,000 euros.
54:22However, if you want to change careers, come to my team, I'll take you on right away.
54:25Well, we'll make a deal.
54:26I'm coming to work for you for a week.
54:28And you, meanwhile, are still a great vehicle.
54:30As soon as it starts, the little walks around the quarries in the sunshine, you invite me.
54:33My pleasure.
54:37Restoring this 1988 convertible was a real challenge.
54:41Between the distribution, the injection, the engine sealing, the clutch and then all the aesthetic aspects.
54:47Frankly, we spent quite a bit of time and it cost us a pretty penny to get to this point.
54:51this result.
54:52But when you see it now, it looks like it's just come out of a brochure from the 80s
54:5580.
54:56And that's really great.
54:57We didn't make a profit, just a little over 1,500 euros.
55:00But putting a legendary car like that back on the road, that alone is a pleasure.
