A chilling video recorded moments before a cruise boat capsized at Bargi Dam on the Narmada River near Jabalpur has gone viral, showing tourists enjoying cool weather and strong winds—unaware of the impending disaster.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening when a sudden storm with wind speeds of 60–70 kmph hit the area, creating turbulent conditions. The vessel, identified as Narmada Queen and operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department, was carrying around 43 passengers, including crew members, when it lost balance and overturned mid-reservoir.

According to officials, the death toll has risen to 10, including a child, while 28 passengers have been rescued and at least three remain missing. Rescue operations involving the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are ongoing, though low visibility has hampered efforts.

The viral footage shows that passengers were not wearing life jackets before the incident. Survivors alleged that safety gear was distributed only after the boat began sinking, causing panic. Some passengers managed to wear life jackets later, which reportedly helped save several lives.

Eyewitnesses said the weather deteriorated rapidly, with strong winds making the water choppy. Several passengers had warned the crew and requested to turn back, but their concerns were allegedly ignored. Locals and workers later assisted in rescue efforts using ropes.

Authorities suspect the vessel capsized due to high-velocity winds destabilising it. Questions have also been raised over alleged safety lapses, including sailing despite weather alerts, delayed distribution of life jackets, and possible overcrowding.

Following the tragedy, the Madhya Pradesh government has suspended similar cruise operations and initiated a high-level inquiry. Action has been taken against staff, including termination and suspension of those responsible.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced an ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased.

Bargi Dam, located about 40 km from Jabalpur, is a popular tourist destination, making the incident all the more alarming.
