00:00This is the throw that led to the points that put the Niners ahead for good, but as called on Talk Sport Radio, which covers the NFL and other American sports, but for England and Ireland.
00:16And this guy's name is Will Gavin, and this is just fun.
00:21He sends Bourne in motion, stomps his foot, gets the ball, looks to his right-hand side, steps up in the pocket, throws left instead. Touchdown, Niners!
00:31Christian McCaffrey right on the G of the Eagles in the end zone, and in the fourth quarter, they retake the lead.
00:37San Francisco up 4-23-19, and this battered, bruised, and banged-up San Francisco team just won't take it lying down.
00:51Oh, that's what he should have said.
00:53He sends Bourne in motion. That's my favorite. Battered, bruised, they will not take it lying down.
00:59In the fourth quarter.
01:02He scores on the G in Eagles.
01:04That was a great description.
01:06Not the A or the L, but precisely on the G.
01:09Brock Purdy stomps his foot.
01:12He sends Bourne in motion. Man.
01:14Christian McCaffrey found the G-spot. Listen, let's go to the phones. 888-957-957. Why are you looking at me like that?
01:23Because if you're going to do that, you've got to either deliver it with some punch, don't just pivot to the phones.
01:28No, that was kind of like, you know, I don't want to stay with it too long.
01:31Anyway, let's go to Scott in Arizona. Hi, Scott. What are you doing?
01:36Don't shake your head at me, Granny.
01:38I'm just listening to you guys, loving you guys.
01:40I was in Philadelphia up until about six months ago, and you guys are my lifeline.
01:47I mean, I had to listen to you guys via YouTube just to get good coverage.
01:51So, praise you guys. Praise your station. You guys rock.
01:54I appreciate you, Scott. That means a lot to us, man. Thank you for doing that. Go ahead.
02:00Yeah, you know, a couple shout-outs.
02:04First of all, the naysayers need to stop.
02:07Brock Purdy can carry his team on any playoff game in any venue, and most of the time he's going to come up with a win, if not all.
02:15I think also, too, you've got to take the picks with the great throws.
02:19I mean, that's just who he is. He's not 6'5", he's not 230, but I'd like to compare his stats to Josh Allen's stats at the end of the year
02:27and any of these top five quarterbacks that are supposed to be better, but yet look what we're doing with the seven-round draft pick.
02:33Number three, Kyle Huszczyk. They released him, and he renegotiated, came back on the team.
02:43That dude's a gamer, and he is committed to his team.
02:46So, my hat's off to Kyle Huszczyk. He's just a stud.
02:50He just wants to play for a good team, and he loves his team, he loves his coach, and he loves his players.
02:55So, and then number three, offensive line stood up, guys. They did what they couldn't do last week.
03:04Awesome. Gave him plenty of time to throw. And then number four, open field tackles were huge compared to last week.
03:12Yep.
03:13So, I'll let you guys discuss it. My phone's about to die, so hopefully I can still hear you.
03:18I'm walking to get my EV at the Charger. Love you guys.
03:21Love it.
03:22Hopefully to come back in the city and see a Giants game.
03:25I'll definitely see some spring training coming up in a few months. Maybe I'll run with you guys.
03:30Scott.
03:30Yeah.
03:31Thank you, Scott.
03:31Yeah. Look us up, man. Appreciate it. We would love to see you at one of those spots.
03:36But it's a good call. It's really good observations. I love that he brings up some of those open field tackles that we saw.
03:43Marquise Siegel had one of them. Marquise Siegel, who I was like, oh, Marquise Siegel's in the game.
03:48That's right.
03:49It was because there was a spot where normally, and I'm trying to remember the receiver it was that he got, but God, it came out on the right side of the field, and it might have been Devontae Smith.
04:02It was just one of those plays where normally, you know, the elite skill position type players are going to make a guy like that miss, and he grabbed him and wrapped him up, and they did that so well across the board yesterday in ways that they did not the week before.
04:17That might have been the Shipley catch the one time. He was the running back. He came out because Barkley got hurt, and then Shipley kind of squirts out.
04:25That one might have been over the middle, though. I could be misremembering, but I can picture the tackle that you're talking about,
04:31where it was just kind of mano-a-mano on the outside, and he rolled up, and he got just enough of him to get him on the ground, and there was a lot of that.
04:38We talked about Seattle 18 missed tackles in that game, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a lot of missed tackles.
04:45There were a few early where, you know, Saquon Barkley's getting through to the second level, and guys aren't able to get him down immediately,
04:51but it wasn't the same sort of busts that we saw before.
04:54And the Brock stuff, I mean, just like, I don't know, man. Just give it up. Give it up.
04:58Like, you know what I mean? Interceptions happen. We don't need to sit here and be like, every pass was amazing.
05:04They weren't. Like, those were two bad mistakes.
05:08But, like, this, I just think everybody's going to get exhausted if we do this his whole career.
05:14If we're going to re-adjudicate the whole thing, and the contract, and the position, and everything,
05:19and maybe, like, I get to a degree that we're going to do that because he's the quarterback.
05:23Like, Jalen Hurts won a Super Bowl last year, and here we are a year later,
05:28there's probably people calling Philadelphia Sports Radio today being like,
05:32this Jalen Hurts guy, he's not good enough.
05:35I understand there's always going to be naysayers, but I think that right now,
05:39we've spent a better part of the year with the injuries where there's an actual kind of, like,
05:44debate going on about whether or not this is an actual thing that, you know,
05:51where the numbers back it up, I just think you need to give it up if that's where you are.
05:56He's got five playoff wins.
05:57Yeah.
05:58And what is he, 26 years old?
06:00Something like that.
06:00And what are we doing? Like, give it up.
06:02It's over.
06:03Yeah, it's over.
06:03It's just like, what?
06:04It was over when they signed him to that contract.
06:06They told you that they like him, and they believe in him, and here they are.
06:11Shanahan now goes to 7-0 in the wild card and divisional round,
06:15and at least half of that is with Brock Purdy.
06:18Yeah.
06:19They get in the playoffs, and they don't lose early.
06:21But you should like him, too.
06:23Not you.
06:24I know.
06:25I don't, like, I just don't, I don't even really get it.
06:28If you want, okay, President of Brockistan, let's have fun.
06:30But, like, what are you doing?
06:32What are you doing if you're doing this every week?
06:35Like, this threatening eye at the TV or at the game of, like,
06:40boy, if this doesn't go well, we're going to have a conversation.
06:44Have it with yourself.
06:45The jury is not out.
06:46Like, you know what I mean?
06:48Right.
06:49I don't know what more you need to see, and, you know, all of the things that people like
06:54to hang on around his neck.
06:56And really, okay, you haven't won the Super Bowl, sure.
06:58And that's the majority of the people in the NFL.
07:02Josh hasn't.
07:03Joe hasn't.
07:03We don't have to play this game, but you can hang whatever you want to hang around him.
07:09But the biggest one that kind of disappeared this year is he needs all-stars around him.
07:15If he doesn't have an all-pro cast around him, well, I mean, anybody could do that when
07:20you've got Debo and George, and you've got Ayuk and McCaffrey, DeMarcus.
07:26And Jake Tonjes.
07:27Yeah, double Js.
07:29And a fullback who now has to kind of be your tight end because your tight end got hurt.
07:33And I couldn't find this for the longest time today.
07:36I was trying to remember the most random guy who got a target.
07:40And it was that one guy.
07:42Malik Turner.
07:43Malik Turner.
07:44Turner.
07:44Who looked like.
07:45Number 81.
07:46Number 81.
07:47Yeah, they called him up from the practice squad right before the game.
07:50Thank you, Grady.
07:51Malik Turner.
07:51I've been searching my notes.
07:52I found it, and then I lost it.
07:54And I'm like, what's that guy's name?
07:55And he dropped it, by the way.
07:56He was low, but yeah.
07:58I don't know if that goes down as a drop.
07:59Yeah, whatever.
07:59He played a lot.
08:01Yeah.
08:01No, like, guys.
08:02Maybe more than Kendrick Bourne.
08:03Guys, like, I don't know if you've heard.
08:06The Niners are down a man or two.
08:09Like, there's just, like, whatever getting thrown out there on the field.
08:12Oh, was that Brock Purdy's first road playoff win?
08:16Yep.
08:17Yesterday.
08:17Yes.
08:17Yeah.
08:18So.
08:19Oh, there you go.
08:20Check that box.
08:20Check another box.
08:21Green check, yeah.
08:22You know what I mean?
08:23Actually.
08:24Lee Turner, by the way, four snaps.
08:25Okay.
08:26So sober up in there.
08:28Well, anyway.
08:29I'm just kidding.
08:30Yeah.
08:31Like, actually, that's a perfect segue.
08:34We're going to keep them coming.
08:35We're going to stay with you, callers.
08:37But I want to address this text that came through on the Boxer and Grossing Work Injury
08:41Attorney's Text Line, because there is a little bit of a thing.
08:44I get it, but it also kind of rubs me a certain way, so let's address it.
08:49This comes from the 925.
08:51Thank you so much for listening.
08:52This was actually almost a half hour ago that you sent this in, so hopefully you're still
08:56listening.
08:57But the question is, how can we claim that this is the most wide open the playoffs have
09:03been in a while, and then at the same time, treat this Niners team as some sort of Cinderella
09:09story?
09:10All of these teams seem fairly close to me.
09:12All right.
09:13That's an interesting take in terms of it's a wide open playoff, but here's what I tried
09:18to say last week, and I want to say again.
09:21My opinion, I don't think you get to tell this story of the 49ers and act like their injury
09:31situation isn't something different.
09:35I will immediately go into shutdown mode with anybody who's like, well, everybody's got injuries,
09:42so you just got to deal with that in the NFL.
09:44It's like, well, that's not fair.
09:47It's obviously a true statement, but it's completely missing the entire journey that this team is
09:57on, and I would bet that if you did the counterparts, you would sort of more understand what the Niners
10:05are facing.
10:05Take the Eagles, and let's go, all right, who are their two highest, most foundational defensive
10:11players?
10:13Who are they?
10:13Is it Jalen Carter and Quinion Mitchell or is it Zach Bond?
10:18All right.
10:19Those are mine.
10:20You don't get those.
10:21They're out.
10:23Okay?
10:24Now, in the middle of the game, Dallas Goddard plus, I would say, his leg explodes.
10:32He's gone.
10:33Out.
10:34And then let's go to that wide receiver core.
10:36What is the Ricky Pearsall equivalent?
10:39Is it Devon?
10:40I know you're getting old for it.
10:41They're both better than Ricky Pearsall.
10:43Well, and Devontae Smith is like, it's only, that's based on time.
10:48I mean, like, Ricky Pearsall hasn't had enough games, but I got to compare that to something
10:53because he is one of the Niners' best receivers.
10:56So you have to take one of the Eagles' better receivers.
11:00He's out.
11:00Yeah, I don't think that it's fair to take out Brown or Smith, but for the sake of, you know, whatever.
11:06Yeah, I see what you're trying to prove.
11:07Go to any other team and do this.
11:11And tell me that those teams would hold up this way.
11:16It's absurd.
11:17They wouldn't.
11:18Well, even beyond just the injury part of it, to be a road team and be this big of an underdog,
11:25you usually don't win games.
11:27And if you add in the injuries and losing George Kittle, who is, you know, your foundational,
11:32if he's not your best receiver, he's probably second behind McCaffrey.
11:35Oh, my gosh.
11:36McCaffrey with 103 catches in the regular season.
11:38So you do your things a little bit differently, and you lose Kittle, who is not only one of
11:43your best receivers, he's a key to your run game.
11:45You get Trent back, but you lose Kittle.
11:47Surprise, you don't really do well running the ball in this game.
11:50Who could have seen that coming?
11:52So forget Seattle on Saturday.
11:54You had to do things completely differently, and Demarcus Robinson becomes the offensive hero.
11:59We all had that on our sheet back when he was suspended.
12:03Back in August, if I would have told you, yeah, when he comes back from suspension,
12:06he won't really play much all year, but when they go in the wild card game at Philly,
12:12he's going to have a monster game.
12:13What do you think about that, Mark?
12:15How high are you, dibs?
12:17Exactly.
12:18Exactly.
12:19So, look, I know that everybody's supposed to be tough and all of these things,
12:24so if you want to look at it that way, be my guest.
12:26Look at it that way.
12:27I think you're actually doing a disservice for what you're watching.
12:31I really do.
12:33You know?
12:33Oh, it's an excuse.
12:35They don't need an excuse.
12:37They won.
12:39You are diminishing what the 49ers have achieved if you want to act like injuries are not a part of this story,
12:46and if you think that other teams have dealt with what the 49ers have dealt with,
12:51respectfully, you're wrong.
12:53You're just wrong.
12:54They have the third most games lost to injury among starters.
12:58That's what Fox put up for the season.
13:00So they didn't lead the league this year, but they were third.
13:02Yeah, and first of all, how are the other two teams doing?
13:05That's number one.
13:06Right.
13:07But number two, what's the comp to Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, George Kittle?
13:12And then we could go on to your number one draft pick to Ricky Pearsall.
13:17Oh, by the way, your quarterback missed half the games this year.
13:21Like, I guess my point is, is if you tried to find some sort of a comp to that and put it on another team,
13:28I think it's laughable the idea that that other team would still be doing well, would still be playing.
13:34I don't think they would be.
13:35Yeah, it's very difficult to think about, and then you add in the fact that they were six-point dogs on the road,
13:42and then you lose Kittle.
13:43So, yeah, it becomes even more remarkable when you think about it.
13:46And, you know, you had to come through.
13:48You had to lean on your defense, which has been the lesser of the units for the majority of the year,
13:54and then they came through again and again.
13:57They gave up six points in the second half.
13:59That's incredible.
14:00Just incredible.
14:02Absolutely incredible.
14:03Joe in Walnut Creek, you're next.
14:05Hi, Joe.
14:05What's up?
14:07Oh, this is Joe.
14:10Hey, Joe.
14:11Hi, Joe.
14:13Hey, I love you guys, man.
14:15I'm so fired up with this win, and I've been a Niners fan since, you know,
14:21the first Joe against the first Cincinnati, and it's just the point I want to make,
14:26the point I want to make is that Shanahan has a complicated offense, right?
14:33Yep.
14:34You're talking about different packages, different motions, you know, and all that.
14:40And he's got Sky Moore.
14:42You know, Sky Moore's a pro in that.
14:45You know, Brian Robinson.
14:46These guys stepped up, you know, and that can't be overlooked.
14:50It's just you would watch them perform, and on the other side of the ball,
14:56you've got third-string linebackers, and you've got these complicated coverages.
15:01You've got blitzes.
15:02You've got zone coverages in that.
15:06And these guys, so, you know, the coaching, I tell my friends, you know,
15:11the coaching is really good, but then look at this.
15:15If they didn't care, if they didn't care, these players, and they were just like,
15:20oh, we're going to lose, you know, we're not going to win,
15:25and they didn't have that kind of sense of belief in the plan given to them,
15:31like, it's just amazing.
15:33So, I mean, that's all I want to say.
15:37You know, you had third-string linebackers.
15:38Come on, man, you know, they haven't even been around along to put the plan in play.
15:45So, anyways, keep up the great work.
15:47I don't want to take any more time.
15:48Thanks for all of what you guys do.
15:50Joe, thanks, man.
15:51That's a fun call, and I think that that's sort of, that's the way to look at it,
15:57at least in my eyes.
15:58That's the way to look at it.
16:00I don't think you can work through this and not come away.
16:04For me, again, like the shout-out to me, there's so many people,
16:07there's no wrong answers, but Kyle Shanahan, that's such an operational win
16:13to be able to, because remember, a big part of coaching,
16:16everyone keeps using that word belief, like, isn't that, that's a part of it.
16:23That's not the X's and O's.
16:24That's not calling a play.
16:26That's a group of people all on the same page
16:30and maybe, quite frankly, believe in a little something that they shouldn't.
16:35And so that goes to everybody.
16:37But even as Eric Kendrick said, the leadership in the building is succeeding.
16:42And it succeeds because Shanahan trusts his coaches,
16:46he puts good coaches around him,
16:48and he allows the leaders of the team to be leaders of the team.
16:52And so the old cliche about next man up, it is a cliche, but it's also true,
16:57and it's especially true when you have a situation like this
17:00where you lose George Kittle again,
17:02and Jake Tonjes has been in this spot before,
17:04so now he knows, all right, it's going to be me,
17:07and it's going to be Farrell who now has to play more at tight end,
17:09and if it's Juice, he's going to be more involved in the offense as well.
17:13And if you watch the game, as I did again this morning,
17:17Kittle gets hurt, and it's heartbreaking,
17:19and you can see it right away, by the way,
17:21and I'm sure the team knew immediately what had happened.
17:24And so, all right, you've got a TV timeout because he's hurt.
17:27You all have about two minutes to two and a half minutes to get over it
17:31and go out and play some more football.
17:34The very next play, Jawan Jennings, 45-yard pass and run, bam.
17:38So, yeah, talk about not missing a beat.
17:41You're bummed that you lose your guy,
17:42but you still have a football game to go out and play, and they did.
17:45I love 703 hits us on the Boxer and Gerson work injury attorney's text line
17:49and says whether a good comparison would be the Commanders.
17:53They were without their top receiver for a good portion of the year.
17:57They lost their quarterback for a number of games, not all of them.
18:00I don't think they lost any of their foundational defensive players.
18:03I don't know if they have foundational defensive players, but they went 5-12.
18:08Yeah, that's kind of the way it goes.
18:10They went 5-12.
18:10And that's why you signed Mac Jones in March on day one of free agency,
18:13because you hope that he can hold it together, and he did.
