00:00but hey at least we get to talk about sports so yeah let's get into uh some 49ers here because
00:04john lynch did talk with the media yesterday and uh it's great to have trent williams back
00:09in the building apparently that's the word as uh news did break at the top of the show yesterday
00:14that trent williams agreed to a two-year deal worth about 37 million fully guaranteed over
00:19the next two years the guy always wins he just always finds a way to win when it's all said
00:23and
00:24done him and draymond have very similar qualities in that they're always the last man standing
00:29winning at all of these negotiations credit to him he's got he's got leverage and he's got some of
00:34the greatest negotiation tactics of all time meaning i just won't show up so uh they need him
00:40obviously they need to get their offensive line rocking and rolling and they needed him to be
00:44their anchor and as frustrated as i've been with him to see them find a way to give him another
00:4937
00:49million guaranteed this now makes him you know going into this year he is set to be the highest paid
00:55highest career earning 49er of all time yeah that's actually pretty wild you consider all the
01:01great 49ers that have played here in the past but again that's also part of just the fact that
01:06salaries keep going up and up and up sure throughout time but they they still seem as probably the one
01:12of the most important if not the most important non-quarterback in this organization and you know we
01:18see it joe this offense more or less lives and dies by whether or not trent williams is able to
01:24be
01:24consistently healthy uh other of course than that you know that that chicago game on sunday night
01:29last year he was injured on the first play and niner still able to win that game but his importance
01:34joe it's uh it cannot be understated and they're still saying that that is still the case i'm viewing
01:39this uh this week is a pivotal one for the 49ers they've really doubled down on a lot of veterans
01:44and
01:44i'm okay with that like this is what the team is right now when i look at fred warner and
01:50when i look
01:50at christian mcafree and now trent williams into the fold i mean that's a win now roster right last
01:55year i thought they maximized whatever you thought their possibilities were given who was actually out
02:01there you know as disappointed as it might be to lose to the seahawks and then then go on to
02:07win
02:07the super bowl like the reality is i've reflected i've been able to take some time back like they
02:11really did maximize the year they had mac jones out there for eight games last year and it might have
02:16been the best version of mac jones we've ever seen they got brock purdy back he wasn't 100 percent
02:21it didn't look great and then all of a sudden boom he was lights out they won a huge playoff
02:26road game
02:26in philadelphia knocked off the super bowl champs from the year prior and and yeah they got their
02:31teeth kicked in by a much better seattle team at the time but seattle's lost a lot of people this
02:35offseason so i'm viewing this week as a crucial one and you know what does the trent williams
02:41kind of signing signify to me well do i think the 49ers are going to draft a tackle actually i
02:46do
02:47but it's not going to be in the first couple of picks i agree with that and i think that
02:50they have
02:51always kind of identified in the first couple of picks dramatic need they always outside of wide
02:56receiver when they picked up ricky pierce so i think they were pretty set on trading one of the
03:01two guys and that's why they took pierce all to begin with but the two guys you mean being
03:06debo and i yeah and i think that most of the time this team likes to plug one of their
03:12holes
03:13think last year last year first three picks in the draft what were they hey we need defensive line
03:18we have no one coming back we're letting javon hargrave go and all these other guys go we are
03:22taking michael williams yep we are going to take alfred collins and then one pick after that we are
03:28going to be taking the other d tackle cj west they really went all in on trying to fill those
03:33needs
03:33i think this year i look at this team and they've got needs in the secondary whether that's
03:38safety or cornerback i can listen to both although they've been signing a lot of veteran cornerbacks
03:43they need offensive line help absolutely they need an outside edge rusher they need i believe another
03:49outside linebacker and i think you can make the argument for wide receiver and tight end and running
03:54back they've got a lot of needs but one that isn't a pressing need for this upcoming year is left
04:00tackle
04:00and so on that particular you know paradigm i'm happy with it i'm happy that he's back
04:06as frustrated as i've been with the process of it and now this allows them to do what they've kind
04:11of
04:11need to do right now this year take the best player available no i'm right there with you and again
04:17it
04:18i wonder if it's still going to be an edge rusher there again i agree with you with the with
04:22the
04:22needs they have i'm always a fan of upgrade the offensive line just whenever you can totally agree uh
04:26john lynch was asked yesterday if there's a succession plan in place for trent williams and
04:32it doesn't seem like there is a set in stone one right now which again you have trent locked in
04:38for
04:38one more year possibly two years right now so it's not imperative per se that they jump on getting that
04:47succession plan down but the fact that it it's out kind of in the ether there for the 49ers to
04:52acknowledge
04:52and start working on yesterday that was one of i think the notable things that i heard from john
04:57lynch was just like yeah it's important that we get that succession plan in place for trent they got
05:02viridian low there who he seems very confident that low can step in behind trent and uh who's
05:08viridian low no one knows yeah i doubt that what i would end up doing in this draft and i
05:13know it's
05:13not going to be the sexiest thing and i have a more long-winded opinion on this for later on
05:17in the
05:17week but the reality is last year when gray zabel got taken by the seattle seahawks no one knew who
05:25he was look i know there are some diehard draft nicks out there and people think they know the
05:31draft and that's fine there's a lot of nerds out there yeah and i'm not i'm not shaming them but
05:35i
05:35think the majority of niner fans really don't know most of the what i call meat and potatoes type
05:40players yes they might know the jeremiah loves and the fernando mendozas and omar cooper wide receiver
05:48casey inception um but they're not going to know who any of these meat potato linemen are and i think
05:55a great draft for the 49ers would be some version of them drafting multiple guys in the first three
06:02or four picks that i've never heard of who are on that offensive line maybe one guy who can start
06:07at
06:07left guard to start the year and and if trent you know goes out or retires after this year or
06:13a year
06:13down the line that guy can maybe transition to right or left tackle um eventually like that's
06:18what i would love to see them do if they go get an outside linebacker i think there's a lot
06:22of value
06:23in the second and third round to go get what raheem morris is going to be wanting as one of
06:28those bend
06:28type outside linebackers which we really haven't been identifying since going to the wide nine we like
06:35that hand in the dirt speed or power edge rusher that's more traditional i think raheem is going to
06:41want a guy that's a little more athletic and and we passed on those guys and so i don't know
06:46where
06:46michael williams is going to be at with the acl injury recovery but this team needs to reinvest on
06:51protecting brock birdie and getting after the quarterback again now i will listen to tight end
06:57that's a huge need for me i will listen to running back i will listen to safety like those are
07:02huge
07:03needs as well but i'm okay with them taking a pair of guys early in this draft who i've never
07:08heard of
07:09who are on the offensive line that's not the worst thing in the world no because again like
07:13that's to your point no one's ever really dove deep into the awesome offensive line prospects here
07:18and i could rattle off some names that have stuck out to me in terms of offensive linemen but
07:22to be honest show it's they're going to be coming later there's so few draft picks they have to work
07:27with here that's the other thing they have i'm open to a trade down well that that kind of gets
07:31me
07:31into my next point you and i were kind of discussing it yesterday and you brought it up
07:35and i was like hmm would they actually trade out of the first round if they don't like anything
07:39at 27 and listening to john lynch yesterday it doesn't seem like they have a lot because you
07:44know how teams they always like grade out draft prospects this guy's a first rounder this guy's
07:47a second rounder blah blah blah uh i think lynch said yesterday there's like somewhere like around
07:5220 or less guys that they think that they have first round grades for which tells me that if 27
07:57comes
07:58along and there's just no one that they're enamored with who they think has a first round uh grade
08:03the idea of trading back does make a lot more sense because again joe they have
08:06six draft picks four of them are in the fourth round and three of those fourth rounders are
08:12actually fourth round compensation picks so most of their damage is going to be done in the early
08:16hours of day three what i'm praying for is for ty simpson and you know quarterback x to drop and
08:22drop
08:22and drop and drop and get a quarterback desperate team well yeah like let's say hype and i'm just doing
08:27hypotheticals here arizona doesn't take a quarterback at the first pick that they have that they jump
08:32back into the first round later into the first round yeah and they want to go get a quarterback
08:37like a ty simpson that would be a ideal landing spot you get their second round pick you get some
08:43future comp maybe another middle round pick that would be something i would be highly highly interested
08:49in you know what that would kind of be basically is we've been saying you know for the first couple
08:53months of the offseason do you trade mac jones or not to try and get a second round pick
08:57in that situation sasky if ty simpson is available close to 27 you could kind of get kind of a
09:04a
09:04similar draft pick compensation for that that you would have gotten from mac jones you end up getting
09:10your best of both worlds there you keep your backup quarterback and you get the draft pick that
09:14you would have gotten had you move off of him i actually like that a lot but there's one thing
09:18that
09:18i will take umbrage with john lynch i don't know if you heard he made oh i know you're a
09:22comment
09:23and i just i i think it's i i love john i wish someone would have followed up but i'm
09:27not trying
09:28to tell the beat reporters to do their job but like he can't really think that can he and and
09:33i i think
09:34the the line for me was you know we don't have holes glaring knees yeah what can you play the
09:40sound
09:41for me that the john lynch let's let's get our board updated here i know we had some technical
09:45difficulties yeah i know we've had some but no that was i i was listening to uh his pressure my
09:50jaw
09:50it was the first thing that i heard that really jumped out to me it was after the trent williams
09:54questions when he was after that um let's see if i can find the line here we can get to
10:00it just a
10:00little bit but yeah that kind of jumped out to me as well no glaring holes where it's just like
10:06i i think you can make an argument that there's several glaring holes on this team one of them
10:11being at edge rusher which for it seems like the 500th year in a row that's kind of like the
10:17biggest
10:17position we're talking about even though they they apparently were supposed to have addressed it
10:21last year with michael williams they made the addition of keon white he's still on this team
10:25this year um but here we are again it's it's groundhog day no glaring holes this is a team
10:31that doesn't have a starting left guard no glaring holes this is a team that has a 34 year old
10:36center
10:37that we all think stinks i know pff loves him but none of us do like couldn't move couldn't move
10:43lj out
10:44of the way in the lane um this is a team that has a tight end who just tore his
10:50achilles in the
10:51playoffs not in like week eight in the playoffs all right this is a team that doesn't have a slot
10:57wide receiver replacement for juwan jennings now you could think juwan jennings isn't good he's been
11:02very valuable for this team okay this is a team that couldn't run the ball last year with their
11:07primary running back who i still think had a very fantastic year but like running back
11:13we're not worried a little about the succession plan for cmc okay what about safety this is a team
11:19that can't pick the ball off if they're like you could run over hand our safeties the ball and they
11:24might drop it well that's they can't cover anything no and then the tackling becomes an issue as well i
11:29mean malik mustafa i mean how many missed tackles do we see from him last year you can make the
11:33argument
11:33that jair brown mustafa both of those positions free and strong safety need to be updated there you
11:39mentioned the receiver situation this is what i don't like shasky is that well again with your
11:45limited draft picks i don't know if they can actually address this in the draft i hope they do
11:49but you know shanahan said at the beginning of the year likes one of these younger receivers whether
11:53it's jacob cowing whether it's jordan walkins one of these guys needs to step up and start getting
11:58what i see exactly and that's what i don't like is that that's basically the approach we have to take
12:03with the receiver situations i don't want to play a wait and see like if you like these guys you
12:07would have played them you didn't play them so why should we trust that they're going to just
12:09get out there and start producing all this well and the other thing that i that i like ticks me
12:13off is that we haven't even brought up what i would argue would be still one of their biggest needs
12:18which drives me insane but edge like that's what we start off with yeah like so left guard center
12:24tight end wide receiver db edge and you can make the argument running back i think running backs way up
12:29there as well and so that gets me to the mac jones who you brought up yeah you almost have
12:35to trade
12:35him if somebody wants him like we have too many holes i want to win now all right and i
12:39know having
12:40the backup quarterback is incumbent like they would not have made the playoffs yeah if they didn't have
12:43mac jones i totally understand that i think it's more valuable to get something back for him right now
12:49and then find a comparable replacement if brock purdy goes down for eight or nine games next year
12:55we're probably cooked yeah we're probably cooked regardless of who the quarterback is and also
13:00you know then there's the whole separate conversation about brock's long-term standing with the team
13:03you can't miss eight games back-to-back seasons but like they need picks they need to plug holes
13:09this thing that they don't have any glaring needs like john get out of here then they asked him about
13:13the draft and his response was like well how do you feel about your draft history he goes well all
13:1811
13:19guys we picked last year still on the team what what kind of comment is that that's a pretty old
13:24part
13:24but are they on the field though that's kind of what we're looking for name one starter name no i
13:29want
13:29name name one starter from last year's draft class upton stout is he a starter if he's a nickel corner
13:36and you're not in the nickel to start the game i'm just curious unless the other teams on the only
13:41joe the only guy 16 snaps in a closeout game against the seahawks on the road he's the closest
13:46thing i would say i agree and i like him the only other one i'll give you is i'll give
13:50you alfred
13:51collins i think he got a couple starts in there as well him and stout i think were the probably
13:56the
13:56two best performers from that draft class last year and yet like look how thrilled you are with
14:01upton stout look how thrilled you are with alfred collins solid players sure but like the nighters
14:06need more than just solid players be coming out of these drafts and this is where the michael williams
14:10and you know injury really doesn't he would be their lone starter of that draft class and i'm just
14:15being honest if we look back a year later now look i'm not writing all these guys off they've got
14:20a
14:20whole year to come through but if we're being fair with ourselves early returns not great yeah and again
14:26i really got warmed up to upton stout i like him i i never after watching him for about four
14:33or five
14:33weeks i just the michael one was a reach stretch armstrong thought that was a reach well as you
14:38say they got an edge rusher who can't handle things on the edge don't you i'm just i'm not pulling
14:43out
14:43my pom-poms for upton stout either like he's a dog like i do like him but like come on
14:49you
