00:00You know, it's three o'clock in the afternoon. Usually, I have a video done by six o'clock in
00:07the morning. I've already posted it out on YouTube, and I've spent the entire day writing stories to post online
00:15about Jesus, being in different places, interacting with different people. I love to tell stories about Jesus.
00:24You know, today was a day of contemplation. You ever just sit and think about where you've come from and
00:33how you got here, how everybody thinks it looks so easy, and really, inside, you felt pain that nobody ever
00:43knew that you were feeling.
00:45You know, there have been nights in my life when I did not know what else to say to God,
00:51because I already said everything I had. I had asked. I waited. I stayed steady, showed up every day.
01:00I tried to keep my mind from going to dark places, but the room still felt quiet, and that kind
01:10of quiet can start to hurt in a way that is almost impossible to explain.
01:16It's not just the silence around you. It starts to feel like silence pressing against your chest. It makes a
01:26person wonder if heaven is even still close, or if somehow I ended up farther away than I thought I
01:35was.
01:36You know, I honestly believe that a lot of people know that feeling, even if they never say it out
01:43loud.
01:44You know, they keep moving through the day because life does not stop just because your heart's tired.
01:51They answer people, they do what needs to be done, and they carry themselves like everything is fine.
01:59Then the day winds down, and the noise fades, and that deeper ache comes back.
02:10You know, I believe it's the ache of feeling unseen, the ache of missing warmth.
02:16It's the ache of praying because you still believe, while quietly wondering why it feels like nothing is reaching back.
02:28And I gotta tell you, I understand that. I really do.
02:33I know what it's like to want God, not in some distant religious way, but in a way a tired
02:42person wants air.
02:44I know what it is to need comfort and not feel it.
02:48I know what it's like to keep speaking toward heaven while something inside you is afraid that maybe the silence
02:57means something's wrong.
03:00What did I do wrong? Is this my fault?
03:05You know, that kind of season can get inside a person.
03:09It can wear down your strong parts, and it can make even people who love God clearly start to ask
03:18painful questions.
03:20And that's when loneliness gets dangerous.
03:23Because it does not just hurt.
03:27It starts talking.
03:30It starts telling a man he was forgotten.
03:33It starts telling a woman that maybe God shows up for other people in ways he does not show up
03:41for her.
03:45It starts turning one hard season into a whole story about who you are and how your life is going
03:52to feel from now on.
03:54I've had to fight that before.
03:56Not just the pain itself, but the meaning pain tries to attach to itself when it sticks around too long.
04:08You know, that hard truth is the pain.
04:14You know, pain has a voice.
04:17And if a person is tired enough, that voice can start sounding very convincing.
04:23Do you know what I'm saying?
04:25It can make abandonment feel like fact.
04:29It can make silence feel like rejection.
04:33It can make a bruised heart start drawing conclusions and has no business drawing.
04:39And I've learned that the ache is real.
04:43But the story the ache tells is not always true.
04:47You see, one thing we do as human beings is we confuse prophecy with emotion.
04:55Your emotions are not telling you the truth all the time.
05:00You see, a person can feel completely alone and still be deeply held by God.
05:06You can feel numb and still be loved without measure.
05:13You can go to bed with tears in your eyes and still be living inside the care of God.
05:20Even if you cannot feel that care in the way that you want to.
05:25No, it's absolutely true.
05:27That matters.
05:28Because you know what?
05:30Some of the worst spiritual damage I believe happens when people begin to confuse their feelings with the final truth.
05:38They do not just say God feels far tonight.
05:51They start saying God is far.
05:56In that shift, it happens quietly.
05:59It happens inside exhaustion.
06:01It happens in the dark.
06:04It happens when a person is so worn down that he is tempted to trust whatever thought hurts the most.
06:13You want to know something?
06:16I know better now than I did in some of those older seasons.
06:22But back then, when the silence felt heavy for me,
06:28I thought if God was really near, surely I would feel more than this.
06:34Surely the prayer would change the room.
06:37Surely peace would come faster.
06:41Surely something in me would loosen.
06:45But life is not always that clean.
06:49Sometimes you pray and you still feel weak.
06:53Sometimes you ask for comfort and still have to walk through another long night.
07:00Sometimes you keep reaching for God with a tired heart.
07:05And the only thing you can offer him is honesty.
07:11Maybe that's more precious than we realize.
07:14Think about it.
07:15When someone is hurting deeply, polished words really don't help much.
07:22Performance does not help.
07:25Trying to sound spiritual when you feel crushed inside does not heal anything.
07:31What I've found that does help is truth.
07:37Real truth.
07:39The kind that comes from a place in you that is too tired to continue to pretend.
07:46God, this hurts.
07:50God, I don't understand this at all.
07:54God, I'm trying not to lose heart.
07:59God, I need you because I no longer have the strength to carry this in the way I've been carrying
08:06it.
08:08And personally, I've prayed like that.
08:12Not impressive prayers, just honest ones.
08:17And I think a lot of people need to know that they are allowed to come to God in that
08:23exact way.
08:25You see, he's not asking for a cleaned up version of your pain.
08:29He's not asking you to act untouched when you are breaking inside.
08:36He's asking for you.
08:40The real you.
08:42The one who is tired.
08:45The one who is disappointed.
08:47The one who still wants him, even while struggling to feel him.
08:55Still, there's something a person has to guard in seasons like this.
09:00And I want you to keep this in mind.
09:04Honesty must not become surrender to despair.
09:10There's a difference between bringing your pain to God and building your identity out of your pain.
09:18There's a difference between saying, I feel alone and deciding, I am alone.
09:26One is about truth for a moment.
09:30The other is a lie trying to turn a moment into a destiny.
09:36And that's why I believe some of the bravest faith on earth is not loud faith.
09:43It's not polished faith.
09:46It's not the kind that looks strong on the outside and says all the right things at all the right
09:53time.
09:55That looks really good in church or in movies.
09:59But I'm going to tell you something.
10:01Some of the bravest faith is a person sitting in the dark, hurt and confused, and still turning his face
10:10toward God.
10:11It's a woman with tears in her eyes who has almost nothing left except a few honest words.
10:19And she still offers those words upward.
10:24That kind of faith may not look dramatic, but it's real.
10:30Maybe more real than anything else.
10:35You know, people often think that if God were truly with them, the season would feel easier.
10:43And sometimes it does.
10:46And if that's the case, thank God for that.
10:51Sometimes peace does not come quickly.
10:55But sometimes his presence shows up differently.
11:00Sometimes his presence is the reason you did not collapse all the way.
11:07Sometimes his presence is the reason you got out of bed this morning.
11:14Sometimes his presence is the reason you are still reaching, still listening, still alive inside a season that should have
11:24taken more out of you than it did.
11:27And, you know, I can see that now in places where I could not see it then.
11:35Looking back, I know there were moments when I thought I was barely hanging on.
11:42And the truth was that God was holding me more than I understood.
11:48I did not always feel the hold.
11:51I did not always recognize it in real time.
11:55But he was there.
11:59In the breath I still had.
12:02In the strength to make it through one more day.
12:06In the people who showed up at the right moment.
12:10In the fact that something in me kept turning back toward him.
12:15Even when part of me felt worn to the bone.
12:19And that's what I want to say to the person who feels alone today.
12:24Do not let this silence tell you who God is.
12:29Do not let this pain tell you what your future is.
12:34Do not let this season put its hands around your identity and rename you.
12:41You are not forgotten.
12:44You are not overlooked.
12:46You are not the one person heaven stopped caring about.
12:51What you feel is heavy and I will not talk around that.
12:57It hurts.
12:58It hurts in a deep way.
13:01But the hurt is not the whole story.
13:05So come to God honestly.
13:08Come tired if you need to.
13:11Come confused if you need to.
13:15Come with tears if that's what is there.
13:18Come without the polished language.
13:23Come without the performance.
13:26Just come real.
13:29Then stay there.
13:32Stay near truth.
13:34Stay near what is clean and living.
13:38Stay long enough to find out that silence is not the same as absence.
13:45I know how real the loneliness can feel.
13:49I know how cold the quiet can seem.
13:53But you know what?
13:55I also know this.
13:58God does not leave people just because they are struggling to feel him.
14:03He does not turn away because your heart is bruised.
14:07He does not measure his faithfulness by your present emotion.
14:14So breathe tonight.
14:17Tell him the truth.
14:19Let yourself be seen by the God who already knows every corner of your pain.
14:27Then hold on a little longer.
14:31Not because everything makes sense yet.
14:34But because you are still being carried.
14:38Even here.
14:43My name is Douglas Van de Graaff and I believe in Jesus Christ.
14:49God bless you my friends.
14:52God bless every single one of you.
14:57Every single one.
15:01Bye-bye.
15:03Bye-bye.
