00:01You know, there is something especially hard about suffering when you're not out here living reckless.
00:10Think about this.
00:12It's one thing to make a mess and then have to deal with the consequences.
00:17At least that makes some kind of sense.
00:21But it hits differently when you're trying.
00:24You're praying.
00:25You're showing up.
00:27You're holding your tongue when you want to snap.
00:30You're trying to do right by people.
00:33You're trying to keep your faith together and be a decent human being.
00:40And then life still comes in and knocks the wind out of you.
00:46Now, that's the kind of pain that can really mess with your head.
00:50Because now it's not just the suffering itself.
00:54Now it's the question that comes with it.
00:57Why is this happening when I'm already doing everything I know to do?
01:03Why does God allow this when I'm trying my best?
01:09You know, a lot of people never say that question out loud because you feel guilty even thinking it.
01:17You know, they think maybe it sounds ungrateful or maybe it sounds weak.
01:22Maybe it sounds like they do not have enough faith.
01:27But the truth is this.
01:30That question usually comes from a heart that is tired, not rebellious.
01:35It comes from somebody who has been carrying more than they let anybody see.
01:41It comes from somebody who has been trying to stay soft in a hard world and is starting to wonder
01:50if any of it matters.
01:53So, let's just be honest here.
01:57Sometimes suffering does not show up because you failed.
02:01Sometimes it shows up while you're being faithful.
02:05And sometimes pain enters your life right in the middle of your obedience.
02:12Sometimes you could be doing your best and still end up on a floor somewhere emotionally asking God,
02:19God, what in the world is going on?
02:23And that does not make you fake.
02:26You know what?
02:28That makes you human.
02:31And I think one of the hardest things for people to accept is that trying your best does not buy
02:38you a pain-free life.
02:39If we want it to, we really do.
02:43And somewhere deep down, a lot of us start thinking,
02:48if I stay close to God, if I try to live right, if I keep my heart clean,
02:56maybe life will finally stop hitting so hard.
03:01Then it hits hard, sometimes harder than before.
03:06And now you're not just hurt, you're confused.
03:11But confusion is not the same as abandonment.
03:15And that matters.
03:17Just because you do not understand what God is doing,
03:20does not mean God has stepped away from you.
03:25A lot of us treat unanswered pain like proof that heaven went silent for a reason.
03:31We start assuming we must have missed something, done something, failed somewhere,
03:39or disappointed God in some hidden way.
03:44And yes, there are times in life when we need correction.
03:49There are times when we need to own what is ours.
03:53But not every storm is punishment.
04:05You know, some of the deepest pain people carry
04:10came while they were loving well, trying hard, and barely hanging on.
04:17You can be sincere and still suffer.
04:21You can be kind and still get wounded.
04:25You can be praying and still feel crushed.
04:29That is real.
04:31It's human.
04:33And I think one reason suffering feels so brutal when you're already trying your best
04:40is because it touches the place in you that was hoping your effort would finally make life safe.
04:48And when life still breaks your heart,
04:51it can feel like the ground underneath you has lost its ability to be solid.
04:58But maybe this is where your faith becomes more than a reward system.
05:04Now, think about this.
05:07Maybe this is where you stop following God because you think it will protect you from all pain.
05:14And you start holding on to God because he is the only one who can keep your soul alive
05:21in the middle of pain.
05:23Now, that is a different kind of faith.
05:28Not shiny faith, not loud faith, not perform-for-everyone faith.
05:36Real faith.
05:38The kind that says,
05:40I do not understand this, Lord.
05:43I do not like this.
05:45I would never have chosen this.
05:48But I'm still going to stay near you because I have nowhere better to go.
05:54And that kind of faith is not weak.
05:58That is strong in a way most people will never understand.
06:04Because anybody can talk big when life is smooth.
06:09Anybody can post something hopeful when everything is going their way.
06:14But to keep turning toward God when your heart is sore,
06:19when your prayers feel heavy,
06:22when you're disappointed and tired and still choosing not to let go,
06:28that is something deep.
06:31That is something real.
06:34And I know somebody listening to this right now needs to hear this next part.
06:42Your suffering is not always a statement about your value.
06:50Some people start hurting and immediately assume they must not matter anymore.
06:55They start reading pain like it's a verdict.
06:59They think,
07:00If God really loved me,
07:03this would not be happening.
07:05If I really mattered,
07:08life would not feel this hard.
07:11But that is not how this works.
07:15Pain is not proof you are forgotten.
07:18Pain is not proof that God is against you.
07:22Pain is not proof that your effort meant nothing.
07:29Sometimes pain is just part of living in a broken world
07:33while carrying a heart that still hopes for something better.
07:38And sometimes you are hurting not because you did life wrong,
07:44but because life on this side of heaven is still full of loss,
07:49betrayal,
07:51sickness,
07:52pressure,
07:54grief,
07:55and things we cannot tie up with neat answers.
07:59And that is where people get frustrated because they want the reason.
08:05They want the clean explanation.
08:08They want the answer that makes it all sit still.
08:12But a lot of the time,
08:14what we get is not an explanation.
08:18What we get is presence.
08:22And I know that can sound too small when you're really hurting inside.
08:27But it's not small.
08:30Because when you are in real pain,
08:33the first thing your heart needs is not always a lesson.
08:38Sometimes it needs to know it's not alone in the dark.
08:42God does not always explain everything.
08:46But he does stay with you.
08:48He stays when your mind is tired.
08:51He stays when you're disappointed.
08:54He stays when you do not even have good words left to speak.
08:59He stays when all you can offer is,
09:04God,
09:05I do not get this.
09:07You know,
09:09there is something powerful about knowing you do not have to pretend with God.
09:15You do not have to dress up your pain in church language.
09:19You do not have to act stronger than you are.
09:23You do not have to come in sounding polished.
09:26You can come in confused.
09:29You have permission to be frustrated.
09:33You can come with tears and a tiredness in you that sleep cannot fix.
09:40You can come with questions.
09:43and you can come with nothing but a cracked voice and a tired heart
09:49and he will still meet you there.
09:53I think sometimes suffering does a strange thing.
09:58It strips away all the fake stuff.
10:01It burns off the version of faith that was built mostly on outcomes.
10:07It exposes how much we are leaning on control.
10:13And it shows us where we tied God's goodness to our comfort.
10:18That is painful, but it's also honest.
10:22Because if your faith only works when life works,
10:26then life was the thing holding you up all along.
10:31And you know what?
10:33Some of the strongest people I know are not the ones who never suffered.
10:39They're the ones who suffered and did not let suffering make them bitter.
10:45They came out softer, wiser, deeper, gentler.
10:51Not because pain is good by itself,
10:55but because they kept letting God shape them inside of it.
11:01And that may be where you are right now.
11:04Maybe this season is not making sense.
11:09Maybe you're tired of being strong.
11:12Maybe you're doing your best and it feels like life is leaning on your chest.
11:19God would have changed something by now, you say to yourself.
11:25Maybe you've been carrying this quiet question for a long time.
11:31Why am I going through this when I'm already trying so hard?
11:37And I cannot give you an answer that removes the mystery.
11:42I would not insult your pain by pretending this is simple.
11:46But I can tell you this.
11:50God is not measuring your worth by the weight you are carrying.
11:54He is not disappointed in you because you're tired.
12:00He's not angry because you're asking him why.
12:04And this season is not the full story of your life.
12:10Sometimes your best does not change the storm.
12:15Sometimes your best is what keeps your heart alive
12:19while the storm passes through.
12:21That matters more than you think.
12:25Keep going.
12:27Not with fake smiles.
12:29Not by pretending it does not hurt.
12:33Keep going honestly.
12:36Keep going one day at a time.
12:39Keep going.
12:40With the kind of faith that tells the truth.
12:44Keep bringing your real heart to God.
12:48Keep breathing.
12:49Keep praying.
12:51Even if the prayer is messy.
12:54Keep trusting that what feels unbearable today
12:58will not be forever.
13:03You are not weak because this hurts.
13:06You are not failing because you are struggling.
13:10You are not abandoned because you do not understand.
13:15Sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is say is just stay soft with God while life is being
13:23hard on them.
13:25And if that's where you are.
13:27And if that's where you are right now, hear me clearly.
13:31You are doing better than you think.
13:33You are doing better than you think.
13:34God has not left.
13:36And your suffering is not the end of your story.
13:43My name is Douglas Vandergraaf and I believe in Jesus Christ.
13:49God bless every single one of you.
13:54Every single one.
13:57God bless you.
13:59Bye-bye.
14:00Bye-bye.
14:00Here we go.
