00:14This is Venice, a beautiful, ambiguous singer, a fairy tale and at the same time a trap for foreigners.
00:23This is what Thomas Mann wrote a century ago in his famous novel Death in Venice, he told
00:31the story of a man tormented by a forbidden passion that has nothing to do with existence.
00:37Venice, love and death as if they were one and the same thing, an indissoluble bond that will act as a backdrop
00:45also to the story we will tell you this evening, which however is a completely different story.
01:11Good evening and welcome to Detective. Detective is the RAR program created in collaboration
01:16with the State Police reporting on solved and unsolved crimes. This evening's is
01:22a story that seems to have come from the pen of a brilliant screenwriter, a real
01:28film, a story that takes place between Venice and Milan. Understanding it will help us in our
01:37I'm talking to two professionals. Professor Anna Maria Giannini is with us. Good evening.
01:43Professor. Good evening. And Professor Arige Antinori. Good evening. Our story.
01:51a cold January morning begins in Venice.
02:02On the morning of January 28, 2014, Venice awoke to shocking news.
02:10A gruesome discovery last night on Via Loredana, in the heart of Venice. A taxi driver
02:15he is walking along the road a few meters from the beach when suddenly he sees
02:20A body appears from the waters of the canal that runs alongside the street. It looks to him like that of a woman.
02:23and raises the alarm. This apparently body has been reported to us
02:29of a woman, completely naked and with her face turned towards the water. The patrol car arrives
02:36and obviously the firefighters recover this body, the death is confirmed by the
02:43Health workers. All the slopes are open, should someone be ill, take an extreme action, or something else happen.
02:51It's winter, we are in the heart of Venice, a place known especially to film buffs
02:57because here every late summer the Jet 7 gathers for the international film festival.
03:03But that night at the end of January the climate is different and those corpses emerging from the waters
03:09shrouded in silence, unfortunately, it's not a film, it's horror, real horror. To tell this story
03:18story exceptionally but necessarily in the studio with us there are two guests. Dr.
03:26Marco Odorisio, head of the Venice Flying Squad at the time of the events. Good evening, Doctor.
03:33Good evening to you. Next to you is Dr. Marco Denunzio, director of the section at the time of the events.
03:42Milan Flying Squad homicides. Good evening. So, Dr. Odorisio, that night you were...
03:51This woman's body floating in the water. What hypotheses are being put forward? At first, a bit of everything.
03:59first of all, from an initial reconnaissance in the vicinity, the clothes of the woman were not found
04:06woman for whom further investigations are being carried out. However, it is necessary to provide a name
04:15and to also arrive at the cause of death, carry out autopsy investigations.
04:20And it's precisely through the autopsy that the first answers arrive. Let's see.
04:32The first hypotheses were to think of a suicide, but if it had been a suicide
04:38Why were there no clothes? The other hypothesis was a murder, but the body was not
04:46had signs of something that could suggest a murderer who had struck the
04:53victim. The autopsy revealed that the cause of death was not drowning,
04:58as the lungs were deprived of water, but it had come from asphyxiation. It is also noted
05:03that the body had been in a fetal position for a number of hours, as there was
05:08a ready-made mark of the chin on the girl's sternum.
05:13This really helped to create an aura of mystery as to who this person might be.
05:20woman and how the body could have arrived at the Lido.
05:30So after the autopsy, at least one thing is certain. This woman didn't jump on her own.
05:37in that canal, but someone threw it. When they threw it in the canal, it was already dead.
05:44The autopsy will say that death occurred within 24 hours of the body being found.
05:50and was caused by a violent, atypical and incomplete strangulation.
05:57Then there is that chin imprint on the corpse's sternum.
06:03Doctor Odorizio, what could this autopsy finding mean?
06:11Yes, it is an element, this footprint, which indicates that this woman,
06:18this girl, was transported, so up to the Lido, we can say in a position
06:27such a curled up or so-called fetal position, so much so as to leave the imprint
06:33of the chin on the sternum and above all so that this imprint can be formed, it was
06:40of a transport to the place of discovery which also took a certain amount of time.
06:46Regarding his identity, can you find out anything?
06:50In this case we were also quite lucky because with the scientific police
06:55fingerprints are taken from the body of this young woman and they match
07:01with the fingerprints that had been submitted when applying for a permit
07:07of study stay.
07:10So at this point you have a name, what is this woman's name?
07:13The young woman is identified, generalized for a 29 year old Iranian woman,
07:20Matamb Adzavoy.
07:21We understand that he is actually resident in Milan where he is attending the second year of the course
07:30Degree in scenography and costumes for the show at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts
07:39and therefore given his domicile, his residence in Milan, we contact the colleagues of the team
07:45Milan mobile with whom he began a close collaboration.
07:48We have the seventh collaboration right here in front of us.
07:52What are you doing?
07:53I call us back to the girl's apartment, the only apartment we know thanks
07:58to the residence documents he had issued, which is an apartment in Maggiolina, a neighborhood
08:04north of Milan.
08:05There we meet three friends, three compatriots of the girl, three Iranian girls who tell us
08:12that she has changed her residence for a few months now and they also add that they don't hear from her
08:18for a few days now, in fact, they have been showing concern about this silence.
08:24So, this girl has been missing for a few days, has anyone filed a missing person report?
08:30Yes, in fact they themselves had gone that same afternoon to the police station in Milan, accompanied
08:38from the girl's new roommates, two Indian boys and from a third boy, another boy
08:43Indian who was having a romantic relationship with the Iranian woman at that time.
08:48Obviously the first essential thing is to hear these people to understand the latest
08:54hours of Matab's life and above all to draw a profile of him, so we ask them all to add up
09:01information and we carry out a search, an initial investigation inside the new
09:05apartment, which is an apartment in the precooked area.
09:08What do they tell you?
09:11Initially everyone agrees that Monday 27th is the last time in which
09:17they had either seen it or heard it, but then the Indian boys, the Indian couple who lived
09:23in the new apartment with Matab, they give us more precise directions.
09:27They tell us that on Monday 27th they had seen Matab around 10am, after which they were
09:34they left home to do some shopping in the centre of Milan and when they returned inside
09:40there was no trace of the young Iranian woman's apartment.
09:44In reality, however, what strikes us is a bit of a divergence from the profile
09:50of the girl who makes her compatriot friends and the boy and the Indian couple about the roommates.
09:56Meaning what?
09:57Both her boyfriend and her compatriots describe her as a reserved girl, a girl who
10:04she was wary of strangers, studious, she preferred to spend her evenings at home
10:10reading a book or watching television.
10:12Instead, the two Indians portray her as a very frivolous girl, almost of easy virtue,
10:19They tell us that she usually abuses alcohol, does not return home at night or returns home
10:25late anyway.
10:26They almost give us the impression of a girl of easy virtue and this makes us suspicious.
10:32So, let's try to understand better who Matab is, this beautiful girl who has no
10:41not even thirty years old, who came to Milan probably to make her dreams come true
10:49and who instead ended up strangled in the icy waters of the Venice Lido.
11:05Since she was a child she loved colors, dance, joy, music and the magic of cinema.
11:13I started studying cinema at university.
11:15After completing her three-year degree, I advised her to go abroad to continue her studies.
11:20Matab insisted on going to India, he had a particular interest in Indian cinema.
11:25But I told her, you'd better go to Italy, it's a great place.
11:32The day she was accepted into the Brera Academy, she called me screaming with all her heart.
11:38Yes, I passed by!
11:42I remember us hugging at the airport.
11:45I told her, go and become what you want and don't come back until you become it.
11:51And she replied, I know aunt, I promise I'll make it.
11:55And off it went.
12:03This woman is Matab's aunt, he knew her.
12:11Yes, I remember this woman very well, very strong and at the same time desperate.
12:18It was she who reached Venice to carry out the identification of Matab's body.
12:26I am sorry to hear today that this lady in Iran is going through big troubles
12:32for her membership in the Woman Life Freedom movement.
12:38This story takes place between Venice and Milan, but also between Italy and a very distant country
12:47from ours, which is Iran.
12:49For this reason I ask Professor Antinori for help.
13:00Professor Antinori, what is this about?
13:03The Woman Life Freedom is a protest movement born in the Islamic Republic of Iran
13:07in September 2022 following the arrest of Iranian citizen Mashamini, then subsequently
13:14deceased. This movement aims to restore women's freedom and recognition
13:22of female identity in a regime in which taking off the Iqab, taking off the veil, constitutes
13:28an item for which one gets arrested.
13:31This is the situation Matab's aunt experiences, but she was his niece. Who was she really?
13:39Is it possible that he was leading some sort of double life?
13:43Her way of being as a studious girl emerges, attentive to affections, who willingly spends time
13:51time at home, which cultivates interests and hobbies. And interest also emerges
13:56going out, it seems he doesn't mind a bit of excess with alcohol. But this isn't necessarily
14:02It means a double life. They can be two perfectly integrated parts. It's quite
14:08understandable that at her age she was also interested in having experiences that surely
14:14in her country of origin they were not allowed to her.
14:18So far, what has emerged is a series of hypotheses. But to the policeman, to Dr. Dorigio,
14:34I'm asking specifically, which hypothesis convinces you the most?
14:43Based on the elements we have in our possession, we are convinced by the first hypothesis, that
14:50of Matab as a good girl. And so we decide to delve deeper into the positions of the two Indians,
14:59to better understand the basis of their beliefs. At this point we see
15:05who are these indian boys.
15:11He told me that he had found an Indian student who had been living in Italy for 5-6 years and that
15:17He wanted to go live with her. He told me, she's a person like me, who comes from the East,
15:23He's from Asia and studied like me. We understand each other well.
15:31Matab immediately found herself in a somewhat uncomfortable situation because this
15:37Indian girl hosted her boyfriend very often and so she basically had to sleep
15:42with a couple and therefore also listen to moments of intimacy.
15:49I remember we'd already talked a couple of times. I kept asking her, she's good.
15:54your roommate. I felt something was wrong. She said, auntie is a little aggressive,
16:01when her boyfriend comes here she changes her attitude towards me, as if she thinks
16:06that the boy looks at me. And then she behaves that way.
16:16Things therefore seem to be different from what the Indian couple say.
16:25Doctor Denunzio, from what you discover, actually the victim, this Iranian girl and the couple
16:35of Indians were arguing. Yes, there had been some discussions, some very heated ones, which is why
16:41Matab had decided to move apartment. In fact, on the very day she was murdered.
16:47had planned the move and in this way, at least in theory, he would have put an end to the
16:53arguments and problems with his Indian roommates.
16:56Dr. Dorisio, how are the investigations progressing in Venice?
17:00We make a request for telephone interception and localization of the devices
17:07cell phones used by both the Indian couple and Matab herself. Moreover, her cell phone
17:15it had been turned off since January 27th, as had her boyfriend's cell phone.
17:24we also continue with a request for the acquisition of surveillance images, especially
17:31those near the docks, piers, and vaporettos at the Lido of Venice.
17:37So let's see what emerges about these two Indian boys.
17:47In analyzing the latest movements of both the victim and the people we are monitoring,
17:53We're starting to see some inconsistencies. The two Indians say they last saw her.
17:58in the morning at 10 o'clock on the 27th. After having breakfast, they go out to go shopping
18:05In central Milan, they return and find the girl gone. We reconstruct their movements and see
18:12that it didn't exactly go that way.
18:16On February 1, 2014, the two boys realized that they had given an incorrect version to the
18:23police. Any cameras would not confirm this alibi and so they decide to change the
18:29version. They claim that Matà left early and they stayed at home all afternoon.
18:41Doctor Odorizio, on the morning of January 27th, was it Matà or the two Indians who left the house?
18:50The two Indian boys lied and are continuing to lie when they claim that
18:57They saw Matà leave the house, but they didn't move. The investigations and findings
19:05decisive factors come from the cell trafficking of the Indian boy who on January 27th
19:14with his cell phone at 4.12 pm he connects to a cell phone in Lecco with about sixty
19:22kilometers from Milan.
19:23This is a real twist, so at least we know the guy is lying. It's not
19:29It's true that he stayed at home, nor that he stayed in Milan. However, Matà was found
19:34In Venice, so now Lecco seems to be leading us astray. But what does this have to do with this story?
19:42Lecco?
19:44Yes, that's what we need to understand. In reality, when the kids come back to be verbalized,
19:51and we press them they begin to contradict each other. Furthermore we discover that the Indian boy had
19:57bought a plane ticket to go back to India and the next day he would return to
20:04his country. At that point we suspend the report and as people informed of the facts they assume
20:11the role of suspects. We invite them to appoint defense attorneys and while waiting for their lawyers to arrive
20:17defenders the Indian decides to make some spontaneous statements.
20:22And what does it tell you?
20:23He tells us the story of what happened on the night between the 26th and the 27th. He tells us that
20:28to be
20:28He returned home late from work, around 1:30 a.m., and found the two girls awake. At that point
20:34he suggested they have a drink together and he and Matab drank a whole bottle
20:40of whiskey, while the Indian girlfriend simply has some vodka with a drink
20:46energy. At that point, after drinking, Matab would have felt unwell, probably
20:51precisely because of the alcohol intake. After taking her to the room, the Indian couple
20:56She would have gone into a closet to have sexual intercourse. Once they returned to the room
21:03they would have gone to bed and woke up the next day and found next to them
21:08Matab dead.
21:16There was always only one version. I asked my girlfriend what had happened,
21:26she didn't know, she said she had been ill the previous evening, during the night, because
21:33she had also drunk a lot, my choice would have been, the accused always says, that
21:40to call the police, but then to avoid creating embarrassment, I saw that my girlfriend was
21:46in difficulty, I resolved to help her to go and hide the body, even if
21:53we answer, after all, there is nothing to keep.
22:04According to the Indian boy's story, Matab was naked that morning, lying next to him.
22:11in the marital bed and inexplicably death. And this alone, allow me to say, is absurd,
22:19also because, let us remember, the autopsy established that Matab was strangled. Furthermore, Matab,
22:27According to the autopsy, he had indeed drunk the previous evening, but in modest quantities.
22:35Doctor Denunzio, this modest amount was not sufficient to cause death.
22:43Exactly, we understand immediately that this time too the boy is lying, he is not telling the whole story
22:49truth at least, but let's let him continue anyway. What else does he tell you? He gives us an indication of what
22:55what would he and his girlfriend have done, they would have put the body of poor Matab inside
23:01of the trolley and at that point he alone would have started the crazy journey, first to Lecco by train
23:08to try to dump the girl's body into the lake, there would be no
23:13succeeded. He would have taken the train again, he would have returned to Milan, he would have reached this point
23:18point Venice and then again the Lido of Venice and inside the canal he would have thrown
23:24the body of poor Matab.
23:25This is what Milan tells you after questioning this gentleman, this boy
23:32Indian. What are you doing in Venice at this point?
23:35We made a very simple argument. Given the late hour and therefore the circumstances...
23:42that there were no useful trains going from Venice in the direction of Milan, we did not
23:48excluding the possibility of perhaps using a taxi. So we did the check
23:55of all the taxi drivers who worked the night shift there to place Rome and we have
24:00found the right person. His testimony will be crucial and important in the continuation
24:07of the investigations.
24:08We met this taxi driver. Let's hear what he has to say.
24:17I remember that evening as if it were now, the ugly winter evening, fog, rain, mixed
24:25or snow. I was working the night here in Venice, setting up shop for Rome. At 11, I was the first on duty to leave.
24:35This guy comes up to me, knocks on my window, and asks me to go to Milan. I have to go to Milan. How much?
24:44How much does it cost? I tell him the price, he says, okay, wait, I'll ask my girlfriend and then I'll let you know. They pass by.
24:52Three minutes, four minutes, they come back. He bangs on the window, says, okay, let's go. And they go to sleep,
25:01one to the side, one to the other, behind. They don't speak, they say nothing, until Milan. After three days I
25:10Call the Santa Chiara police. Can I report to the station immediately? He confirms that he has...
25:18accompanied a person to Milan, but in reality he adds that the people were not one, but two.
25:24It was a man and a woman. Obviously this testimony combined with the recognition
25:31photographic that he subscribes to becomes fundamental. At the direction of Dr. Odorizio,
25:39The deputy commissioner protopope's companion and I are leaving immediately for Milan,
25:45where we actually notify the arrest warrant to the two Indian citizens together with our other colleagues.
25:54Allow me to remember my colleague and deputy commissioner Franco Protopapa, who recently passed away,
26:03who has worked so hard for this investigation into the murder of Matab, but also for other investigations,
26:09having been the head of the homicide section of the mobile squad of the Venice police headquarters.
26:17And it is precisely the homicide squad of Venice that puts together a whole series of information
26:24which from that moment begin to converge on these investigations.
26:28But there is still one important finding to be made, and that is the one relating to surveillance cameras.
26:34Let's see what comes out of these images.
26:38In this map we see the detail of the Santa Maria Elisabetta landing stage,
26:44where we noticed the two Indians arriving through the video surveillance images.
26:51What is the important element?
26:53That the body was found at the mouth of this canal,
26:58which is just under 400 meters from the Santa Maria Elisabetta landing stage.
27:03After a short time they were noticed retracing their steps from this direction.
27:11It is very likely that they boarded another vaporetto here
27:15which brought them back to the historic center of Venice.
27:25So, is the choice of the Lido random or is there some particular reason?
27:32It's not a coincidence, because the Indian boy, years before, had worked right there at the Lido
27:39and therefore he remembered it as a non-chaotic, quiet place and therefore suitable for his purpose.
27:46It is precisely on this point that I would like to ask our experts something.
27:57Professor Giannini, how do you interpret the behavior of these two people?
28:02A man and a woman who walk around for hours carrying a suitcase with a
28:07corpse?
28:09The emotional coldness and dehumanization are striking, because what they have in their suitcase
28:13it's not just a corpse, it's the dead body of the person who was in the house with them,
28:19a person with whom they have interacted, with whom they have shared moments
28:23and it's also striking how much they overestimated their ability to shoot with this body
28:30and get rid of it, which is not at all easy.
28:36Certainly what these two people felt while traveling carrying a suitcase with them
28:46the lifeless body of a person, of a friend of theirs, something that gives pause for thought.
28:54But we must reflect on another extremely important step.
29:01Up to this point we have described what the concealment of the body is, the concealment phase,
29:09but we still have to understand everything about the previous phase, the most dramatic one, that is, the murder.
29:17After trying to pass off Matab's death as a natural one,
29:24the two Indian boys were confronted with the evidence of the autopsy findings
29:30they change their version again and their positions take different paths
29:38which are diametrically opposed.
29:40So, there are contradictions emerging from the two interrogations of the boys. Let's see.
29:53At a certain point the prosecutor decides to interrupt the interrogation for a quarter of an hour,
29:59we go into another room with the interpreter and at a certain point she lets slip the sentence
30:05It was him with a rope. At this point the interrogation resumes,
30:11there is still a recording of what she is being told and so she realizes
30:15that her partner might one day hear her accusing him and she might even say
30:21no, I can't say it was him, ask him if it was him, I didn't
30:25view.
30:28If it takes letting him go, then it was me.
30:37The Indian girl, as we have heard from several witnesses, had had some disagreements
30:44with Matab and his version of events certainly does not contribute to clarifying the situation. First he states
30:50that it was her boyfriend who killed Matab with a rope, then he takes the blame
30:56but almost leaving it to be understood that she is doing it to save her boyfriend.
31:03The minutes reveal that he even asked to be able to stay in the cell with him.
31:09Professor Antinori, how do you explain this behavior, this girl's behavior?
31:17From reading the documents it would seem that a relationship of subservience between the girl and the boy emerges.
31:24with which this relationship and among other things some episodes are reported in which there would have been
31:31some arguments with excessive reactions from the boy who seems to have besieged
31:40that in such circumstances he was capable of losing control. It emerges quite clearly
31:48However, the girl's dependence on the relationship and how much this relationship means to her
31:57is of vital importance and therefore constitutes its primary objective.
32:04On this point we heard from an expert in Indian culture.
32:13Marriage for Indian women is the only socially acceptable condition.
32:18The most important and most famous religious law text in all of India, the Laws of Manu,
32:27declares that the woman must serve and be devoted to her husband, however, treat him as a god
32:35even if he is a petty, worthless and evil person.
32:43From the point of view of the crimes committed, it seems that the girl tends from a certain moment onwards
32:51to take on the most serious crimes, that is, murder.
32:56There remains a strong suspicion that this attitude was generated in the girl
33:03from the desire to please her man.
33:10But what could be the motive if the murder was committed by the boy himself?
33:21Professor Giannini.
33:22It could be a rejected sexual approach, especially in a frame of reference
33:27in which the woman cannot decide, cannot self-determine, rather she must obey and must
33:33to consider herself absolutely honored in some way by the fact that someone is paying attention to her.
33:39Or that she knew something that she shouldn't have reported, that she should never have reported.
33:45as this would have harmed him.
33:49This is the opinion of a criminological psychologist.
33:55I ask Dr. Denunzio the same question.
34:00What Professor Giannini claimed could really be the motive for this
34:06crime?
34:07On a theoretical level yes, it is a plausible hypothesis, but like all subjective, psychological states
34:16and mental, the motive is not subject to direct proof, unless there is a confession
34:22or a conversation interception.
34:24In this case we have it from neither one nor the other.
34:29Let's go back to the boy's version then.
34:32After an initial interrogation, he only partially admits certain things.
34:40Let's say he tends to adjust his aim.
34:44Is that so?
34:45Yes, certainly.
34:46At that point his version is diametrically opposed to the girl's.
34:51He says that the murder was committed by his girlfriend out of jealousy.
34:58She was jealous of the attention Matab gave her.
35:02And he wouldn't even have noticed this murder because he was drunk at the time.
35:08And it also gives us a crucial clue, namely the location of the murder weapon.
35:14Let's hear what this young man says during the interrogation.
35:21When I woke up I called Matab, Matab, Matab.
35:25She didn't answer me, I didn't know she was already dead.
35:28Instead my best boyfriend said that I killed using your necklace.
35:34And my tongue said that I strangled.
35:37But what happened to this necklace?
35:39And necklace is still home.
35:45Doctor Denunzio, do you find this necklace?
35:48Yes, at this point with the Indian's indications we find her inside a wardrobe,
35:52in a chest of drawers and still has the slipknot at the end
35:57which was used to strangle Matab.
36:00Doctor Odorizio, this is not the necklace but a similar object.
36:08The necklace found in Milan by the Flying Squad is delivered to you.
36:15What do you do with it then?
36:17On Matab's body and especially around the neck
36:22gold particles compatible with the necklace are highlighted and found.
36:30Further investigations are being carried out to highlight any fingerprints of the suspect
36:36but they give a negative result.
36:38The necklace will show the fingerprints of her Indian boyfriend
36:42who will justify himself by saying that his girlfriend, his fiancée
36:48he would have confided in him that he had worn gloves
36:51before using the wool one to commit the murder.
36:56This is a very important detail, that of the gloves
36:59which also puts the girl's defense in difficulty.
37:08The moment my client becomes aware of the fact that her partner
37:12the accusation in detail indicating where the weapon is, indicating what the weapon is
37:16and going so far as to say that she had worn gloves
37:20so as not to leave fingerprints.
37:22And she feels very, very bad about it.
37:25and I said to him, did you put on gloves?
37:27So you realized you were leaving footprints?
37:32And she was disoriented, she didn't understand what I was telling her.
37:37And I had to tell him several times.
37:39She kept saying okay, okay, is he going out now?
37:42Okay, okay, so he's out?
37:51First she accuses him, then he accuses her.
37:56She seems to take the blame but without conviction,
38:00without ever a real and motivated admission.
38:04Either of them could have a valid motive,
38:09even if terribly futile.
38:11Jealousy regarding women.
38:15An approach rejected as far as man is concerned.
38:19But this couple of lovers,
38:22if it can be defined as such,
38:24could not have joined forces
38:26and be an accomplice to the atrocious crime?
38:30Professor Giannini,
38:32How can this behavior be explained?
38:35and this action?
38:36Singles or couples?
38:38Of course, they might have shared the action.
38:41or at least one has done the action
38:44or one has performed the action,
38:45but they shared it and they shared the motive.
38:49And it must also be said that her profile
38:51it's the profile of a woman who is very dependent on him
38:55and therefore very eager to do what she believes
38:59or expect him to want to.
39:01Consequently, if she had been asked to lie
39:04or if she could have imagined that by lying
39:08could have helped him,
39:09he certainly would have done it.
39:12The Indian couple is sent to trial
39:15for voluntary homicide and concealment of a corpse.
39:19The two choose the abbreviated rite.
39:21The judge orders additional medical-legal evidence
39:26which will establish the dynamics of Matab's murder
39:29it is compatible with the action of a single person
39:33which in a minute could have been taken away from Matab
39:36every ability to react,
39:39strangling her with a necklace
39:41and leading her to death within the next two to three minutes.
39:46So a very short action
39:47of which perhaps the third person is present
39:50she may not have noticed
39:52and this is a hard blow
39:55for one of the two defendants.
40:02The first instance ruling is a bit of a surprise
40:06because my appointment had also been approved by psychologists
40:10and in this report it was highlighted
40:14also the cultural and religious aspect
40:17and this relationship of dependence of my client
40:21from the companion
40:22who had a dominant attitude in the relationship.
40:27The judge instead believes that
40:30my client had a behavior
40:34unclear, unclear, in any case not corresponding to reality
40:38throughout the process
40:41and that was basically the only real reason
40:44jealousy.
40:45The moment, because while the man would not have had
40:48no reason
40:50to reach such an extreme action
40:55towards Matab
40:56the very strong jealousy of his partner
41:01could, in a context like this
41:03justify the little homicidal frenzy anyway.
41:12in fact we have a sentence of acquittal
41:15so he is innocent
41:16and a conviction
41:19and therefore my client is guilty.
41:29it is she and only she for Italian justice
41:33to have killed Matab
41:35in the appeal process regarding the concealment of the body
41:39the man will be granted a suspended sentence
41:44Instead, it will be the woman, the only remaining defendant
41:48to reserve one last surprise for us.
41:57At a certain point during the discussion my client was asked
42:02if he wanted to say something
42:03at that point she gets a little confused
42:07the process stops
42:09I say, well, tell your version
42:12this is the last chance
42:14he is acquitted anyway
42:15it's final and that's it
42:17at least save yourself, tell the truth
42:20and she thought about it, she thought about it again
42:23and decided to confess
42:25he told me
42:26yes, because that's how it is
42:29I can leave early and go back to him
42:31so until the last
42:33the thought is always this companion
42:44so the Indian girl confesses
42:47and it's a full assumption of guilt
42:49which we must take note of
42:51and which definitively establishes his guilt
42:57then we tried to tell
42:59not only the story of a terrible and cruel murder
43:03but also that of a girl
43:05full of dreams and hopes
43:07for his future
43:14That spring I was supposed to go to Mahatab in Italy.
43:17I asked her
43:19have you already been to Venice?
43:21and she had answered me
43:22no, I want to wait for you to go there together
43:28we are in Lido
43:30near a canal
43:33where Mahatab's body was unfortunately found
43:41we came here with Mahatab's aunt
43:44to remember for the last time
43:47with some flower petals
43:51the figure of Mahatab
44:02Ten years have passed since Mahatab's death
44:05and the tragedy of his death
44:07It inspired me to take action
44:09for the rights of many young, innocent people
44:11that are killed
44:13Mahatab gives me strength
44:14I hope this tragedy
44:16may it never happen again
44:18for no one in the world
44:26this was the story of Mahatab Saboi
44:29I want to thank Dr. Odorisio
