00:05This family is obsessed with basketball so you know I have to do something extra
00:09special in the basement. Next stop, the NBA. Bang, bang.
00:35I'm Sarah Gore and you're watching Open House NYC, everyone. This week, distinguished design,
00:41delightful decor, and delicious dining, and I am bringing it all to you from this duplex
00:47on the Upper West Side. At nearly 4,500 square feet, this home is a perfect blend of pre-war
00:54grandeur and modern refinement. It showcases soaring ceilings, white oak herringbone floors,
01:01and beautiful treetop views that make Roosevelt Park and the American Museum of Natural History
01:06feel like part of the decor. From the front door, you step into an inviting great room anchored by
01:13a marble fireplace and flooded with natural light through oversized windows. The kitchen features
01:19Carrera marble countertops, a matching backsplash, and custom cabinetry, a place any home cook would
01:26love. There are five bedrooms in all, including a serene primary suite. This is a home that
01:33effortlessly combines livability with luxury. Now, we are getting started at this 25-foot-wide
01:39townhouse in the heart of Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Originally built in the mid-1800s, it's been
01:44completely reimagined as a bright entertainer's dream with floor-to-ceiling windows, walls of glass,
01:53and innovative tiered living spaces that feel both dramatic and welcoming. Enjoy.
02:03I'm Lindsay Barton Barrett, and we're here at 205 Clinton Street in the heart of Cobble Hill,
02:09one of Brooklyn's best neighborhoods. This house is incredible. It is the best of innovative modern
02:16design and historic architectural detail. There is so much to see. Let's go inside.
02:24The minute you step in, you will be in awe of the scale, light, and refinement. This space is
02:32dedicated to entertaining. You have a lovely living room, dining area flowing down into this
02:38exquisite, dramatic kitchen. This stylishly appointed living room is filled with vintage pieces. You have
02:46exquisite stained glass, this dramatic pyramid, and a marble mantel. And through these double-height
02:53windows, you have a view to the tree-lined street outside.
03:00Creating a space like this is quite an accomplishment. This atrium is 30 feet tall,
03:06floor to ceiling. Every great party ends in the kitchen. And this one was designed with that in
03:12mind. It's all centered around this oversized island with beautiful Kawakata gold marble countertops,
03:20custom walnut cabinetry, beautiful breakfast nook, and seating for everybody. Everything you can imagine
03:27in your dream kitchen is right here. And now let me show you something that's beyond your imagination.
03:34What's the best summer party? It's a barbecue in your own private backyard. And this one has
03:40everything you could want. A built-in grill, this beautiful custom pergola, and a seating area big enough
03:47for all your friends. Who wants to see more of this beautiful house?
03:56Heading downstairs, you really appreciate the unique layout of this home. This level includes lovely
04:03seating area and a spacious home office. Whereas the lowest level is configured as a great room. This room
04:09has 15-foot ceilings and plenty of space for your biggest, comfiest couch and beautiful work of art.
04:17And these oversized glass doors fill this room with light. And standing here, you can really appreciate
04:24the integration of the tiered living spaces in this home.
04:32On the second floor is this dramatic primary bedroom. It has its own private terrace and the most
04:39beautiful, well-appointed bathroom. The bedroom itself is pin drop quiet. It's so elegant with beautiful custom
04:50moldings and flooded with light overlooking the garden outside.
04:58On the fourth floor, there are three spacious bedrooms, two beautiful bathrooms. But what I'm going to show you next
05:05is probably my favorite space in this house. Welcome to your very own clubhouse where,
05:13yet again, you see what this home is all about. This space is configured as a sitting room and a
05:20dining room.
05:20You have incredible light from this huge skylight and you have doors that open up more than 12 feet,
05:27creating complete integration between the indoor and out. And the terrace up front. Wait, let me just show it to
05:35you.
05:39I love this space. You can sit outside and relax in front of the fire
05:43or head upstairs for some of the best views in town.
05:52This house is so unique. It combines historic charm and modern architectural design. And if you liked
05:59what you saw, maybe you should consider taking a look in person.
06:06I'm currently planning in my head the party that I want to throw there. That is so fun.
06:10All right. Coming up, a Hampton-style home in New Jersey. We'll be right back.
06:23Welcome back, everyone. And now we're with interior designer Ariella Horowitz at one of her newest projects,
06:29this Hampton-style home in Wayne, New Jersey. It features sunny, entertaining spaces,
06:34dramatic decor, and plenty of fun surprises. Let's take a look.
06:42Hey, guys. I'm interior designer Ariella Horowitz, and I'm super excited to share with you this
06:48beautiful Hampton-style home in Wayne, New Jersey that we meticulously designed from top to bottom,
06:54inside and out. Let's take a look.
07:00The spectacular design begins with this grand double-height foyer. We added this wall paneling to
07:06bring a classic touch to an otherwise contemporary aesthetic, which underlines the attention to
07:11detail that I bring to all of my projects. We sourced and selected this huge chandelier
07:16and the runner that dresses up the sweeping staircase. Coming down this would make anyone
07:21feel like a star. You'll definitely be ready for your close-up.
07:28Off the foyer, we have the dining room, the family room, and this dramatic formal living room.
07:33For the walls and the trim, I chose this beautiful deep blue-gray color. I contrasted it with light
07:39Roman shades, this lucite coffee table, and these cream-colored linen chairs. But no living room is
07:45complete without the perfect sofa, and I went with this velvet one with polished nickel eggs. This is just
07:51a great space to sip a spicy margarita, tickle the ivories, and gossip with friends.
07:59I think you'll agree that even for open house, the scale of this family room is truly jaw-dropping
08:05with these 20-foot-high white oak coffered ceilings. But I also needed to make it feel warm and welcoming.
08:11I did that by bringing in this plush, oversized, comfortable sofa and a pair of boucle side chairs.
08:18I custom designed this limestone fireplace mantle and these handsome two-tone built-ins. In another
08:24unexpected twist, the wine cellar is visible from the family room through this iron-framed glass wall.
08:32Oh, and speaking of glass, this wall of accordion glass doors opens up to the patio and grounds for
08:39seamless indoor and outdoor entertaining.
08:44I designed the outdoors so that every day feels like a holiday for my clients. The patio has zones
08:50for dining and reclining. The pool deck has an outdoor kitchen and bar, and the covered portico
08:55features a fireplace. A great place to sit after a refreshing dip in the pool, which on a sunny day
09:01like today sounds perfect. But there's no time for a swim. There's more house to see. Follow me.
09:12We've seen a ton of two-tone kitchens, so I opted for three tones, and I think it works beautifully.
09:18I mixed the white perimeter cabinets with the white oak showstopper hood and hutch units and painted the
09:25island navy blue. I selected durable quartzite for the countertops and an onyx mosaic backsplash for
09:31texture and visual interest. After all, this kitchen is open to the family room, so it had to be both
09:37functional and stylish.
09:43This family is obsessed with basketball, so you know I have to do something extra special in the
09:48basement, beginning with the goat, Jordan. The basement also includes a full gym, a bar,
09:57store. There's even a salon. Oh, did I mention the basketball court? This two-story basketball court
10:05is always a crowd-pleaser. Next stop, the NBA.
10:15Bang, bang.
10:20The primary is, of course, one of my favorite rooms in the house. I use all neutrals with different shades
10:26of white that add texture and interest. And these boucle lucite chairs are perfect and unexpected. Just a
10:33great place to sit by the fire. I custom designed it in black Nero Martina, and it's one of my
10:39favorites
10:39ever. And who doesn't love a canopy bed? They wanted luxury, and that's exactly what I gave them.
10:51The greatest pleasure I get from design is seeing a home come to life, and this home is full of
10:56life.
10:57That's why it's one of my favorites. It was a pleasure showing you around, and hopefully I'll see you on
11:02the next one.
11:05Don't worry, Ariella. I would have missed every shot, too. Coming up just after the break,
11:10we're with this Brooklyn chef. Don't go anywhere.
11:21Welcome back, everyone. Now we're in Bushwick, Brooklyn with executive chef Jackie Carnisi.
11:26She gives us a glimpse into both the cozy Bushwick apartment she calls home
11:30and the iconic Williamsburg spot she runs, Kellogg's Diner. Enjoy.
11:39Hi, I'm Jackie Carnisi. I'm the chef at Kellogg's Diner. We're here at my home in Bushwick. Come on in.
11:47So first thing you see when you walk in is our gallery wall. It's my son's art. As opposed to
11:53just
11:53putting his stuff on the fridge, I wanted to give him a whole space that kind of celebrated his cute
11:58little pieces of art. And then behind me, I have this framed tile work that my mom got in Turkey.
12:05I didn't go on that trip. I wasn't invited, but here it is, and I love it. I also hung
12:10a painting of
12:10my childhood home in the hallway. I'm a very sentimental person, which is why it was important
12:15for me to put all this stuff in my house, and it's a nice reminder of my hometown. Come with
12:19me into
12:20the dining room. I recently inherited a few pieces of family furniture, including this desk back here,
12:31which belonged to my great aunt Dolly. These like really fun, velvety tassel chairs that I got from my
12:38grandma Dorothy. And then this Japanese panel that hung up in my childhood home. So I guess my design
12:45aesthetic can be described as eclectic, but mostly driven by nostalgia. And this room really makes me
12:50feel warm and loved. So for my room, I really wanted a space of serenity. So I tried to fill
12:59it with a
13:00lot of earth tones, this like clay orange, you know, the brown and the cowhide. My bedroom is filled with
13:06nostalgia. This quilt belonged to my mom. The print of the Chinese horses hung above my bed as a kid.
13:14And then
13:14the drawing is the only successful piece of art I made in college. So it's right around lunchtime.
13:23I'm getting pretty hungry and I want to eat something before I had to work. So let's head to the
13:26kitchen.
13:32It's a pretty standard New York City kitchen. It does have some pluses though. It's got a lot of storage,
13:37ample natural light, a cozy little dining nook. I'm going to make a somewhat Mexican version
13:43of a Turkish dish called eggs chill beer. I grew up in Texas and the cuisine down there is predominantly
13:50Mexican food. That has definitely influenced my cooking and, you know, how I think about food and
13:57my usage of herbs and chilies and acid and heat and everything. So traditionally this dish is made
14:04with poached eggs over seasoned yogurt and then spices fried in butter and like poured over the top of the
14:10eggs. But I don't like poached eggs and I do whatever I want in my kitchen. So I did it
14:14with fried eggs.
14:18In true chef's fashion, I'm going to eat this quickly and standing up, but then I got to head out
14:22to
14:37work.
14:39In my career, I think one of the universal aspects of a restaurant is that it attracts a certain type
14:44of person, somebody who's like creative and kind of thrives on chaos. I think Kellogg's is like a big
14:49beacon of light in the neighborhood. You know, it's always lit up in the middle of the night and you
14:55come in, it's like everything's a nice dusty rose color, lots of warm light. And we've got big plush
15:01booths, big tables so you can order a ton of food. It's just a very inviting space.
15:09But now you've seen my home where I work and my commute. So it's time for me to get started
15:14with my day.
15:19Oh, I just love a good diner. Thanks for the tour, Jackie. Coming up after the break,
15:23we are in L.A. with this design duo. We'll be right back.
15:35Welcome back, everyone. Now we're in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles with this design duo. See how they
15:41expanded the footprint of this craftsman style home, turning a series of cramped spaces into a chic,
15:48airy, European inspired home. Take a look and enjoy.
15:56Hi, I'm Sapna. And I'm Corinne. And we're Bungalow, a husband-wife design team. And welcome to our
16:02project here in Eagle Rock. This is our Eagle Rock craftsman with a ton of European influences that made
16:08it feel like our own. Let's start with the living room. I'm excited to show you around.
16:15This is what we're calling our great room. It's living and dining combined. And the footprint of
16:21the space just really leaned into being a grand, entertaining space. We have a built-in wet bar,
16:27as well as these amazing coffered ceilings. We also included this huge built-in that is both
16:33beautiful, brings the space together. Overall, the vibe of this room is meant to be warm and cozy,
16:40welcoming for your guests, and just truly a place to gather and feel at one with the people that you
16:46love most.
16:50At the top of the stairs, you're welcomed with a lobby lounge moment. And that brings you into this
16:55beautiful, versatile space. And my favorite part about this space is it's whatever you want it to be.
17:00It can be a bedroom. It can be a film room. It can be an office. But the moodiness is
17:05what I love the
17:06most. And no space is complete without fresh air and natural light. And we brought that in with this
17:11Juliet balcony. And we continue that natural light all the way down to the bedroom. So let's go check out
17:16the primary.
17:19I know Garen mentioned that the upstairs was his favorite room, but this room is special. The primary
17:25has so much beautiful natural light coming in with views directly of your backyard and your pool.
17:32One of my favorite design moments of this bedroom is this cutie little settee that's placed right
17:38below this window. And if you'll notice, this window is set up slightly higher than the one next to it.
17:43And these little details and design can drive me nuts. But the way that we've placed the settee
17:48really intentionally underneath it just makes it feel very bespoke.
17:57Thank you guys so much for coming by. We really enjoyed walking you through our Eagle Rock Craftsman.
18:04And we hope to see you at the next one.
18:10Coming up just after the break, this Art Deco inspired apartment. We'll be right back.
18:24Welcome back, everyone. Now we're in Midtown East at the impressive duplex of film producer Dorothy
18:29Berwyn. Located in a late 1920s building, this apartment has been completely transformed,
18:35preserving its original Art Deco charm while creating a warm, modern, and inviting home. See for yourself.
18:47Hi, I'm Dorothy Berwyn. I'm a film producer. And this is my home, which I'm looking forward to
18:52sharing with you. And I am a Londoner, born and bred, but very happily transplanted to New York 22 years
18:59ago.
19:02So this is the entrance hall. And I placed this 1950s vintage green Italian sofa as a place where
19:10people could hang out because it's very enveloping, as you can see by the shape.
19:14One of my favorite rooms in the whole apartment is the bar. When you arrive,
19:20it's so easy to then stand here and just offer whoever comes in a drink.
19:28So when you walk into this room, the first thing you notice is the incredible ceiling height,
19:33which is something I've always loved in a home. And the fireplace, which to me was one of the
19:37essential elements, I was never going to have a home without a fireplace. But the thing that's
19:41really amazing as well, there was an extra bonus, are the windows. They are the original windows of
19:47this building from the 1930s. And then the mirrors, they're also from the original 1930s.
19:53This table is one of my absolute favorite things. When you look closely, it's got all these incredible
19:59blues and greens. It's so sensuous. This sofa is bigger than your average large sofa,
20:05but that's because this room can take it. It's a room which has such majesty and scale. And I covered
20:11it in a color that I just fell in love with. It's a burnt orange, which I found very warm
20:16and welcoming.
20:22This is the primary bedroom. The star of any bedroom is, of course, the bed. It's very high,
20:28so it's quite funny because I'm not that tall. So climbing onto it is always a fun adventure. And then
20:32the headboard I love. It's very simple and it relates to the curtains. It's a very simple room.
20:37This is a vintage desk. And it's made of leather and a very interesting metal. I love it.
20:45So I love the bathroom because it's the first time I've ever lived in New York with a window
20:50in the bathroom. And the stone is complex and rich. And it reminds me of old beautiful bathrooms in London
21:04hotels.
21:05Thank you so much for joining me today. I have loved every minute of designing this apartment.
21:11It's been such an incredible labor of love, and I'm really honored to have shared it with you.
21:18That's all for this week. We hope you enjoyed these tours today. Don't forget,
21:22we'll be back next week with more homes and design inspiration. It's endless. But if you can't wait
21:27that long, please check us out on our YouTube channel and our Instagram page at OpenHouseTV,
21:32where we're adding new stuff all the time just for you. Thank you so much for watching,
21:36and we will see you next week.
