00:05This terrace overlooks your private backyard and it transports you out of the city.
00:10Can you believe this is in the middle of Manhattan?
00:34I'm Sarah Gore and welcome to Open House NYC everyone.
00:37We have a great show for you this week filled with one of a kind homes and stylish spaces.
00:42So it's fitting that we are starting things off at this dramatic Tribeca loft spanning 5,000 square feet on
00:49a single floor.
00:50This Roman and Williams design home preserves everything you want in a classic loft but elevates it with cinematic style.
00:57Star broker and friend of the show Steve Gold shows us around. Enjoy.
01:05Hey I'm Steve Gold and welcome to 115 West Broadway fourth floor, a 5,000 square foot loft in the
01:13heart of Tribeca.
01:14This loft underwent a multi-year renovation by the world-renowned Roman and Williams studio
01:19and it is one of the finest examples of loft living that exists in downtown Manhattan today.
01:25Take this up-lit walnut louver wall for an example.
01:28It gives you a sense of arrival and teases what's to come.
01:32And you'll see that craftsmanship and attention to beautiful detail throughout.
01:39Just take a moment to appreciate the dimensions of this great room.
01:43You can get a workout just walking from one end to the other.
01:47It has 11 and a half foot ceilings, a wall of oversized western windows and dramatic ebonized reclaimed oak floors.
01:56This great room is a vibe with enough space for living, lounging, dining and cooking.
02:02And for a classic touch, look how they integrated the original wooden beam and cast iron columns.
02:08It does not get more Tribeca than that.
02:13Everything in this kitchen is so dialed in.
02:16From the stone, you have this beautiful Calcutta, Machiavecchia, all a single slab, not a seam in sight.
02:22In my nearly 20-year career selling real estate in New York City, this is the first time I've seen
02:27an Athenor range.
02:29It's a commercial-grade cooktop imported from Europe that is a dream for any star chef.
02:34You have beautiful black granite with integrated sink and this walnut cabinetry to the ceiling.
02:41And it's all accented by this beautiful trio of Roman and William pendants that hang like jewelry over the island.
02:47This kitchen is beyond custom. It's bespoke.
02:54Walking through this home feels like you're walking through a design showroom.
02:58But somehow, it still feels warm, welcoming and comfortable.
03:02For instance, this lighting design is aesthetically pleasing and practical and flexible.
03:08You could reposition the lighting to light artwork, furniture or areas on the floor and you could change it as
03:13your needs change.
03:14This home has a gallery-like feel with tons of room for massive art pieces.
03:20But the walls are also art, clad from floor to ceiling in Venetian plaster.
03:25This home is truly a celebration of craftsmanship, materiality and attention to detail.
03:30So pour yourself a drink, put on your favorite record and kick back and chill.
03:39This gallery hallway leads you to the private side of this loft.
03:43The oversized windows of this corner primary suite frame iconic Tribeca architecture.
03:49Keeping with the rest of the loft, the furnishings here are understated elegance.
03:53A live edge headboard, stone night tables, integrated bench and easy chair are a perfect balance of stylish form and
04:01thoughtful function.
04:05When I first stepped foot in this bathroom my jaw dropped to the floor.
04:08It's the size of other people's bedrooms in New York City.
04:11You have Belgian bluestone that was reclaimed and brought here that juxtaposes the really neat finish of this quartzite wall.
04:19A freestanding tub perched right in front of this beautiful window.
04:23And as with the rest of the department, function plays its part.
04:26You have this beautiful oversized dual vanity, 50 shades of green and a stall shower with window and steam.
04:33I would say this bathroom alone sells this place.
04:42In a neighborhood known for its loft living, Apartment 4 at 115 West Broadway has officially raised the bar.
04:49Thanks for tuning in.
04:50I'll see you on the next one.
04:57Thanks for showing us around Steve.
04:59My gosh, there was so many amazing design moments in that home.
05:03And speaking of amazing, just wait until you see what's coming up next.
05:16Welcome back everyone.
05:18Now we're in Malibu to visit this sculptural home that seems to float above its surroundings.
05:22And it's a feast for the eyes.
05:25Enjoy.
05:30Hi, my name is Amit Appel.
05:32I'm from Appel Design Studios.
05:34This is the Aviator.
05:36The idea was is to create a sculpture in the space that you cannot create anymore in the Santa Monica
05:42Mountains.
05:42The Aviator come from the word obviously aviation.
05:45This particular position of the house itself is a point that all the LAX using for reference of going into
05:56LAX.
05:57When you start getting into the house itself, the sculpture itself, I like to call it, you see what you
06:01leave behind.
06:02It's a lot of green and you see a lot of background starting slowly chopping out to get into the
06:08space itself.
06:09Please come in.
06:15We have three spaces of energy that we're coming in.
06:18One energy is basically to ground yourself.
06:21The second energy we go, we're going to go up and see the feeling almost of flying.
06:25Then you have the third energy is basically the combination between the two to be outside and to be protected
06:31from the element.
06:31So the first energy, if you look around you, everything have angle and it gives you the feeling of anchoring.
06:39So when it comes to the kitchen, for example, you still enjoy the view.
06:42You still always have the angles in front of you to remind you the anchoring and the style of the
06:48house.
06:49Every time you're going to look through the house from a different position, the angles will show you something completely
06:54else.
06:55Now that we pass this moment of the grounding energy, let's try to experience something else on the second floor.
07:04We did create a free floating wall that while you're going up, it feels that it hugs you, but you
07:09still have a round element to remind you where you're coming from.
07:13When you go, you look at the tile and the tile have city names.
07:15The idea is because in the second floor, you're going to start experiencing the city feel.
07:20That gives you a little bit of an entrance of a concept of what you're getting yourself into.
07:27Welcome to the Malibu suite.
07:29The first thing you're going to see is basically Malibu.
07:32You'll see all downtown of Malibu.
07:33All the sliding door is obviously open to fill the part of the balcony, but you have all the angles.
07:38All this is still framed, basically the anchor in the bottom, but you feel like you're floating because there is
07:44nothing grounding you here.
07:46So that's a completely different energy.
07:48Let's move to the Santa Monica room.
07:53When you're coming into the Santa Monica room, there's a lot of little, call it portals, and I think it's
07:58a very good pronunciation for it.
08:00So you're getting different views only of the sky and the angle of the sculpture itself.
08:06We positioned the bed, put the logo of the aviator.
08:09We're really proud of the logos and the philosophical reason of what we're doing.
08:13At the same time, when you're standing in the balcony, you're not going to see any columns supporting you.
08:17That's part of the experience of flying that we wanted to create.
08:20And now let's look at the third energy.
08:26Finally, the third energy.
08:28If you're looking at the sculpture from this position, you're going to see all the angles and everything we talked
08:33about until now.
08:34So you're going to find all the 45 degrees angle that anchor you to the first floor.
08:39You'll see the floating concept on the second floor.
08:43And now the best part is to be part of the sculpture itself.
08:48If you're sitting in the property itself, you feel hugged, feel secure, and you see everything rising up from a
08:55very, very small footprint.
08:57And that's the biggest concept I try to achieve here.
09:03The aviator really gives you the opportunity to fly.
09:06And that wraps up the tour.
09:08See you in the next property.
09:12Don't you just love a home that makes you go wow?
09:15That's what we do, people.
09:16And just after the break, we've got another wow-worthy place for you filled with classic splendor and style.
09:33Welcome back, everyone.
09:34Now we're at this landmark townhouse on the Upper West Side.
09:37A true Gilded Age masterpiece, handcrafted millwork, inlaid wood floors, eight fireplaces, and a beautiful hand-carved staircase.
09:48The original details here are stunning.
09:51See for yourself.
09:56Welcome to the Upper West Side.
09:58I'm Amanda Jordan of Sotheby's International Realty.
10:01Today, we're stepping into a true piece of New York City history.
10:05Built in 1884, this landmark Neo-Greck townhouse is the perfect marriage of 19th century elegance and modern-day design.
10:14Let's go take a look.
10:19When you enter the parlor floor, you immediately feel the scale.
10:2313-foot ceilings and dramatic sight lines create an immediate sense of grandeur.
10:28And then you can take in the incredible original detail that this townhouse has to offer.
10:33From the exquisite stained glass windows to the intricate wood stairs, every detail has been thoughtfully renovated.
10:43What I love about this home is that it's not just a house. It's a collection of curated experiences.
10:49In this stunning library, we have a hand-carved fireplace, custom bookshelves, and these amazing intricate moldings.
10:57It also has these two oversized windows that bring in an abundance of natural light.
11:02This makes it the ideal spot to cuddle up with a good book in a classic lounger.
11:12This is the living room, perfect for gracious entertaining.
11:16It has an abundance of southern light, which makes it perfect for lounging.
11:20The focal point of the room is yet another wood-burning fireplace with this exquisite handcrafted mantle.
11:27There's also intricate wood moldings throughout and a lovely stained glass window that overlooks the serene meditation room.
11:35But let me show you my favorite part.
11:39This terrace off the living room overlooks your private backyard and it transports you out of the city with the
11:46sounds of the birds chirping.
11:48Can you believe this is in the middle of Manhattan?
11:56Where the parlor level was about savoring the past, the garden level is all about contemporary living at its finest.
12:03Down here, there's a guest suite, a den, and a kitchen that would make even a chef swoon.
12:11It has top-of-the-line appliances, custom cabinetry, a dining area, and its own wood-burning fireplace.
12:18The kitchen leads to this inviting den with a glass transom that brings in an abundance of light.
12:25But the best part is that it opens up to your own personal backyard.
12:32Imagine having your morning coffee here in your own personal backyard with a dogwood tree and the birds chirping.
12:40It's truly an urban sanctuary.
12:49Upstairs, there are five additional bedrooms and a roof deck with the best views of the Upper West Side.
12:55But I'm taking you to the primary suite.
12:59The reason this primary suite stands out are all the original historical details.
13:06It has parquet floors, two fireplaces, and these beautiful windows overlooking the street.
13:12One of the most interesting details of this primary suite is this vanity from the 1800s.
13:18Looking into the mirror is like looking into the past.
13:21To finish off this primary suite, we have a sitting room, a spa-like bathroom, and yet another terrace.
13:34This townhouse is a true architectural work of art filled with serenity, creativity, and historical charm.
13:42I'm so glad you are able to take a look with me today.
13:47Coming up, we are at the studio loft of this design creative.
14:00Welcome back, everyone.
14:01Now we're with product designer Blanca Codina at her studio loft in downtown Brooklyn.
14:06Now, while Blanca's pieces can be seen at a flat iron gallery,
14:09it's at her home where she tests the livability of her creations.
14:13See how.
14:17I'm Blanca Codina.
14:19I'm a product designer.
14:21Welcome to my lofted studio in Brooklyn, New York.
14:24This building used to be a garment factory.
14:27It was built in the 1920s and it preserves many of the industrial details like the concrete floor and the
14:35exposed pipes.
14:36I'm also a furniture designer, so I really love that I can live here with my furniture and test it
14:42out.
14:43I have many of my works here and they're also displayed at Old Transformers Gallery in Manhattan.
14:48Although this is a small space, there's a lot to see, so follow me.
14:56Here's the entryway to my apartment.
14:58And the first thing you see when you get in is the huge window that fills the space with so
15:03much natural light.
15:05I also thought this was a great spot to put one of my creations.
15:09It's a pouf that's made of esparto rope.
15:12Esparto is a natural fiber that's commonly used to make espadrilles,
15:16which are a type of shoe that's very popular in Spain, where I'm originally from.
15:20And this pouf pays homage to my roots.
15:27We're underneath the loft and since this area has a dropped ceiling, I think it's a very nice retreat from
15:34the rest of the apartment.
15:35So I thought this would be the best space for my living room.
15:38I selected this white rug because it brings brightness to the space and helps delineate it.
15:45There's also a shelf that we decided to decorate with my partner's work.
15:50He's an architect, so here he placed some of his models.
15:54And then I added one of my pieces.
15:57It's made of the same material and weaving technique as the pouf.
16:00This is a really nice space to hang out.
16:04And when we have friends over, we all sit in the different levels of the sofa, which is really fun.
16:09And that's one of the many reasons why I love designing furniture.
16:17This staircase is my favorite part in this apartment.
16:21I love how the steps turn into shelves.
16:24When I design, I get inspired by the forms of everyday objects and give them a twist.
16:31This is a table lamp I made.
16:33It's a faucet that's pouring light.
16:36And I think it's very poetic.
16:38And this other lamp I created, it's inspired by how the industrial pipe
16:43raised from the floor.
16:45So this is a table I made out of wood scraps.
16:49It's interesting how each piece has its own form and character that I decided to preserve when I was building
16:58it.
17:03On top of the loft is our bedroom.
17:05It's the quietest area of the apartment.
17:08We have a king-size bed that's facing towards the windows.
17:12And it's surrounded by two cartel nightstands.
17:15And we also have this area where we keep books and objects.
17:19One of my favorite parts of the bedroom is this column sticking out,
17:23because I really like to see the original architecture of the building.
17:26And I really think it's fun to look out and see the whole space from above.
17:35Just as we want to be surrounded by the people we love, we should also be surrounded by objects that
17:41we appreciate and care for.
17:43After all, we spend so much time in our homes.
17:46Thank you for taking a look at mine.
17:48And if you like some of the things you've seen, come visit me at Ultra Squirmer's Gallery.
17:56Make sure to take Blanca up on that offer, because I just love a good gallery hop.
18:00Just after the break, wheels up!
18:02We've got design on the go.
18:04Literally.
18:05See what I mean in just a few.
18:15Welcome back.
18:16Now, when real estate hits the road and becomes real estate, you know we had to check it out.
18:21See how this couple saw potential in an old school bus and transformed it into a chic yet functional home.
18:28Enjoy the ride.
18:39Hey, this is Brad.
18:40And I'm Donna Leah.
18:41And this is our 1985 Crown Supercoach.
18:44Let's go look inside.
18:46Let's go take a look.
18:48Welcome to the bus.
18:52So these buses are known in the community as schoolies.
18:55It's usually a school bus that is built out from an old school bus into a home like ours.
19:01During this process, we do a lot of customizing.
19:05But I kind of wanted to leave the cab, the paint job, and my steering wheel, all this area right
19:11here.
19:12But to give it a little charm, I added some stickers up here.
19:16All the people that we love and follow, all of the schoolies that we've met.
19:20Everybody gives each other stickers and gone to many Grateful Dead concerts and love the Grateful Dead and the Dead
19:26community.
19:27So a lot of those are up there as well.
19:30Transitioning into the living area, we have a couch and a love seat so we can accommodate quite a few
19:35people around here.
19:37When our kids or a friend wants to come and stay the night, we can turn our long couch into
19:42a full-size bed.
19:44So if you look up top, we went with an open concept, mainly because of the windows that we found.
19:49Believe it or not, everything on this shelf stays. Nothing comes down during our drive.
19:56Let's take a look at the dining room table over here.
19:59All of this I fabricated myself.
20:02If Donna and I are here and we just want to sit down and have a bite to eat, we
20:06can sit right here.
20:07And then if we have company and we want more people, easy six people can sit at this table and
20:12eat.
20:13And look at these amazing views, whether it's the ocean, the mountains, or just a friend's backyard.
20:17And one time we even saw a baby whale. It was pretty amazing.
20:26It was really important to me at the end of the day to have a place to retreat to.
20:30There were a couple of design ideas that I wanted to include.
20:33One was to make sure that we each had an entrance to the bed without having to climb over.
20:38And I wanted a place to put a few knickknacks, not too many, but things that we liked.
20:43Going to sleep at night sometimes has its challenges depending on how level we are.
20:48So we built a footboard that's actually a headboard so that we can turn ourselves around.
20:53So no matter where we park, we're going to get a great night's rest and usually wake up with a
20:57beautiful view.
21:05Well that wraps up the tour. So we traded our real estate for wheel estate.
21:09And we're going to keep on trucking because as they say, it takes time to pick a place to go.
21:19That's the show everyone, but we hope you enjoyed checking out these unique homes.
21:23We'll be back next week with more design inspiration.
21:25But if you can't wait that long, please check in on our YouTube channel and our Instagram page at open
21:30house TV
21:31because we are adding new content all the time, including areas not seen on the show.
21:36Thanks so much for watching and we'll see you next week.
