00:05New Yorkers really value their outdoor space, so what a great place to entertain your guests
00:11than a jungle oasis in the middle of New York City.
00:34I'm Sarah Gore, and welcome to Open House NYC, everyone.
00:38Today, I am coming to you from this expansive loft in Soho.
00:42It features original wood columns and beams, tin ceilings, exposed brick, and oversized arched windows with incredible southern light.
00:52Each stylish area of this great room is clearly defined between lounging, dining, and cooking,
00:59yet all linked by this graceful flow.
01:02The private wing is a vibe, with this long, dramatic corridor leading to this minimalist bedroom.
01:09It's bright, it's airy, it's everything.
01:12Overall, this is classic loft living made new.
01:16Let's kick things off in Greenwich Village at the townhouse of designer Sarah Simon.
01:21Once the residence of actress Ellen Barkin, now dubbed Das Casa,
01:26a playful ode to both the background of its owners and its vibrant spirit.
01:31See how Sarah infused every corner with color, pattern, and pure design joy.
01:38Enjoy.
01:43Hi, my name is Sarah Simon, and I'm an interior designer here in New York City,
01:47and welcome to my beautiful project, Das Casa in Greenwich Village.
01:50You're going to see something that's very unique to New York City real estate and design.
01:55You're going to see something that looks like a boutique hotel,
01:58and it's just going to transport you to a place that you never want to leave.
02:01And as soon as you step through that second vestibule door,
02:04you enter into the parlor level where you're just blasted with color.
02:10We placed the formal living room on the front of the parlor level.
02:14We kept it pretty traditional, keeping the moldings on the wall,
02:18putting marble on the fireplace, but adding a little pink marble with a Kit Kat design.
02:24And to really jazz up the place, we brought texture and color into everything.
02:28I totally believe that Leopard is a neutral and it goes with everything.
02:32So that was one of my main focal points.
02:34All the lighting in this home is vintage, but for the main parlor living room,
02:39we wanted a really good statement piece.
02:41And so we custom made this light.
02:44It really hits that vintage vibe, but is just a little different,
02:48which is just the way that I like it.
02:53We designed the center living area to be like a library.
02:57As a designer from California, I don't get to design fireplaces.
03:01So it was so much fun to be able to put together a masterpiece that is this gorgeous fireplace.
03:08Next things that I love in this room is the lighting fixture.
03:11I love the shape of this and I wanted to make sure that it was going to be a focal
03:16point in this middle room.
03:17When it came to choosing the wallpaper that I was going to put up on the ceiling,
03:20I still wanted it to have an old world vintage feel to it.
03:25And I wanted to have a floral pattern, but it had to be dark.
03:28It had to be moody.
03:30And when I saw it, it was game over.
03:32The main furniture piece that I love, love, love is this vintage couch.
03:37The fabric is original and it's just chef's kiss.
03:41And then there's the coffee table.
03:43Who would ever think monkeys holding up square pieces of glass would be the thing that I would go with?
03:49But when I placed them here, it was a perfect fit.
03:55What is special about this dining room is the chandelier.
03:58The chandelier came from a chateau in France and is something that I had my heart set on from the
04:04second that I saw it.
04:05It informed all my design choices.
04:07And I decided to go with really warm wood tones from the chairs to the dining room table to the
04:13feature wall.
04:14And then on top of that, I collected this artwork from Cabo San Lucas years ago.
04:18And this is exactly where they were meant to be.
04:21Every space deserves an epic bar.
04:23And that's no different from this home.
04:25I wanted to feel like you come to this bar in this home and where am I?
04:30Am I at a cool restaurant in Mexico City?
04:33Am I somewhere in Copenhagen?
04:35You just never know.
04:36And there's nothing better than having dinner or a drink alfresco, which is why I designed this terrace.
04:41This terrace actually wasn't here when we bought the place.
04:44So we added it on and it overlooks the beautiful garden.
04:47New Yorkers really value their outdoor space.
04:50So what a great place to entertain your guests than a jungle oasis in the middle of New York City.
04:59All throughout this home, we use these brass sconces and they add a touch of whimsy
05:05with a cute little hand holding a torch.
05:10This townhome has four bedrooms with unique treasures from all over the world, but I wanted the primary to be
05:16extra special.
05:17The focal point of the room was the bed.
05:19When it came to the shape of the headboard, I really just wanted something that was appealing and just had
05:23your eyes gravitating towards it.
05:25So that's why I went with the arch shape.
05:27And then also found these amazing pillows while I was traveling in Turkey last year.
05:32Underneath my feet, you're going to see a really great vintage Moroccan rug with that black and white New York
05:38classic feel.
05:39Again, we have a mantle that I designed and lighting again, vintage, vintage, vintage all day.
05:47And this one is from Austria, but I think it fits perfectly in its newfound home in New York City.
05:55When it came to the bathroom, I wanted to keep it classic marble all the way, black and white.
06:01But the most surprising thing is the shower.
06:03When you walk in and you look up, it's a real wow factor.
06:07And speaking of wow factors, I can't ignore this closet.
06:10This is what I like to call the Barbie dream closet.
06:14It's probably every girl's dream to have a closet this big and have this much space.
06:20The terrace was already there, but we completely revamped it by putting black and white concrete tile down.
06:25It's a great place to sip your morning coffee or have a nightcap.
06:35Welcome to the rooftop terrace.
06:36I think this is the perfect spot to leave you and end the tour.
06:42Like every project that I do, it comes with its complications and its peaks and its lows.
06:47But I think this one ended up perfect in its own unique fashion.
06:52We'll see you on the next one.
06:57Okay, that closet deserves a serious shopping spree.
07:01That would be fun to fill.
07:02Okay, don't go anywhere because up next, we are in Amsterdam at the home of this streetwear and lifestyle entrepreneur.
07:19Welcome back, everyone.
07:20Now we're in Amsterdam, which is a first for open house.
07:24With its architectural beauty, iconic canals, and distinct energy, there's truly no city like it.
07:31And it's along one of those canals that we meet Guillaume Schmidt, co-founder of the Amsterdam-based international streetwear
07:38and lifestyle brand, Pata.
07:40He invites us into his stylish family apartment filled with personalized design that reflects his passions, his travels, and his
07:49creative vision.
07:50Enjoy.
07:54Hi, I'm Guillaume.
07:56Welcome to my lovely house in the west side of Amsterdam, where I live with my lovely wife, Svaintje, and
08:03my kids.
08:04What I really love about Amsterdam is that it's the best small city in the world.
08:09So you can really hop on your bike and go from one place to another.
08:16I co-founded the company Pata, which is a lifestyle brand from Amsterdam with one of my best friends, Edson
08:24Ceballo.
08:25The meaning of the word Pata is shoe in Surinamese, and sneakers was a part of it.
08:31And sneakers is something that we both loved.
08:33When we originally founded Pata, we wanted to create something that was from ourselves.
08:39We love culture. We love hip-hop music.
08:42We live by the rule that culture is important.
08:47That's our lifestyle.
08:51How would I describe my home?
08:53I would call my aesthetic nonchalant.
08:56It's not over-designed.
08:58It's stuff that we've done and thought of ourselves.
09:00We wanted to feel like a home, not a museum.
09:04We chose to have a big open space living room and smaller bedrooms.
09:09One of the most unique things is the kitchen.
09:14We really wanted to make it pop.
09:17We love color.
09:18The kitchen has actually been built by a friend of us.
09:21And we sat down with him and we kind of described the elements that we like.
09:25The color, the wood, the combination with steel.
09:29So, this is the end result.
09:31The table is made by my wife, Zwaantje, and my late dad.
09:36My dad passed away, unfortunately, but they built it together.
09:39But this is a really nice permanent fixture and a thought of him in our house.
09:44The lighting is actually, it's a creation of my wife, Zwaantje.
09:48And we just wrap paper around light bulbs and that's it.
09:52We love light.
09:53Light helps to create that warmth.
09:56That's why we have light everywhere.
09:58And if you have a space with a lot of light, that's a perfect opportunity to have plants.
10:03And plants give vibe, you know, and I'm all about vibes.
10:08The seating area, I would say that's the area where we come together.
10:13So, which you see books there, you see like little personal things in the closet.
10:18The couch is something that we got from my parents and I always loved that couch.
10:23So, that's a nice piece in our house.
10:26Another quite unique piece in the house is the Pierre Poulin butterfly chair.
10:31A natural element of the leather.
10:32And then I'm mixed with that really chrome silver like setup.
10:37I just love that chair.
10:38I live on the Bilderdijkkaard.
10:40I live next to a canal, which is a very special thing.
10:44When you look outside of the window, you just see the top of the Wester Toren.
10:50And I think that's a really unique, iconic building in the city center.
10:59Our bedroom isn't the biggest.
11:01We chose to keep it minimal.
11:04There's a closet in there.
11:05In that closet, we put some stuff that we really love, some books, some magazines.
11:09And it's a nice mix of having some color and some art pieces in there.
11:14And I love it.
11:15Like, you know, it's a place of peace.
11:17Having a place outside, it's a privilege.
11:20So we don't have a garden, but we have a balcony.
11:24And it's quite spacious.
11:25So we sit there when we have the chance to be outside.
11:29Yeah, it's an amazing space.
11:35Living in Amsterdam is very comfortable.
11:38I paid my dues and worked hard to get where I am.
11:40Thank you for coming out to my lovely home.
11:43Design for me is about knowing yourself and knowing the people that you live with.
11:48Start with that, and the rest will follow.
11:56Thanks for the tour, Guillaume.
11:58That absolutely made me want to go back to Amsterdam.
12:01I love Amsterdam so much.
12:03Okay, when we come back, we are heading downtown to a very unique loft.
12:15Welcome back, everyone.
12:17Now we're with downtown power couple Hannah Bronfman and Brendan Fallis at their stylish
12:22loft in New York's NoHo neighborhood.
12:24See how they transformed this former warehouse into a chic and unique downtown home.
12:33Hi, I'm Hannah.
12:35And I'm Brendan.
12:35And this is our little guy, Preston, who's going to be joining us intermittently throughout
12:42the tour.
12:43So we purchased this place a little over four years ago and we've been living here for over
12:47a year now.
12:48So this is a triplex.
12:49We have a mezzanine level where our primary suite is, our main level and a lower level.
12:54On the lower level, there's two bedrooms as well as a media room and what we call a conservatory,
12:58which is another atrium.
13:00I love talking about it.
13:01Let's just take a look.
13:06So one of the main focal points of this living room is this art piece of a light fixture.
13:11And this is called the floss coordinates.
13:13It is actually five different chandeliers and it all kind of works up in a cone.
13:17So it draws you into the center of the room.
13:20We just thought it looked really beautiful and pulled in also like the brass from the mirrors
13:24that were left from the previous owner to kind of tie it all in.
13:29There's mirror on either side.
13:30So it becomes this infinity mirror with this light sculpture in the middle.
13:33And when you're standing in the right place, it makes the space feel even bigger.
13:38So when we were designing our home, we obviously wanted it to feel warm, but also create a space
13:43that we could entertain larger groups in.
13:45So having this big open setting and then a communal sofa space and this big coffee table,
13:50we could all lounge around and be conversational.
13:54So one of the original features of this apartment were these grand bookshelves.
13:59And it belonged to the rare book curator of Strand.
14:02A very iconic bookstore.
14:04We obviously couldn't have done anything to the bookshelves.
14:07So we just decided to add a little bit of a flare by doing the brass detailing on the bottom
14:13and updating the hardware.
14:14So in the middle of the bookshelves is our record bar,
14:18which is important to us because we are DJs.
14:21We love music in the house.
14:22It's kind of the soundtrack for our lives.
14:24But our favorite record right now is...
14:2750 boys!
14:33So this is our primary suite and one of our favorite features is that at the click of a button
14:37we get instant privacy.
14:39You want to show us how, Preston?
14:41Whoa!
14:42It's not perfect blackout, but it's close.
14:45One of the big design details of the primary suite was doing a smaller primary suite
14:49so we could have more space for function in the back.
14:53And it's also a great place for Preston to run up and down.
14:57P!
14:58Come on, run!
15:07Thanks so much for checking out our NoHo Law.
15:10As you can see, it's been a labor of love.
15:12Our renovation turned out exactly how we wanted, though.
15:15And we hope you guys enjoyed it just as much as we're enjoying it now.
15:18See you guys soon.
15:21Don't go anywhere.
15:22We are heading up to the Pacific Northwest.
15:24We'll see you in just a few.
15:34Welcome back, everyone.
15:35Now, the Ritz Carlton is virtually synonymous with luxury.
15:38A beacon of comfort and timeless elegance.
15:42And in Portland, Oregon, it's also a tribute to its natural surroundings.
15:46This hotel gives guests a front row seat to the beauty of Oregon.
15:51Enjoy.

18:07Coming up just after the break,
18:09we are Brooklyn-bound at the home of this design duo.
18:17Open House is sponsored in part by the Ritz-Carlton Portland,
18:20where luxury meets natural beauty
18:22in the heart of the Rose City.
18:30Welcome back, everyone.
18:31Now we're at this lovely townhouse in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn,
18:34with these partners in design and life.
18:37Enjoy.
18:41Hi there.
18:42My name is Fernand Dasiar.
18:43I have a design studio called Fevo Studio.
18:45My name is Anna Polonski.
18:47I'm a creative director and principal at Polonski in France,
18:50which is a branding and design studio for hospitality.
18:53We're in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.
18:54We are at home.
18:55This house is from 1890,
18:57and we did a full renovation.
18:59And we invite you to come in.
19:03Welcome to our living room.
19:04We open several partitions in the living room,
19:08and we create arches.
19:09And we try to bring the arches into the shelving
19:12that we create in an S shape.
19:15So we have our sun two years and a half ago,
19:18and we mostly spend the time in the floor,
19:20so we don't have a carpet.
19:21So I create this carpet,
19:23they're made in felt,
19:25in collaboration with another studio in Mexico,
19:27and we're very happy with them now.
19:28A lot of the things Fernando designed for here are rounded.
19:32The shelving, the sofa,
19:33the coffee table you can see here
19:35that are made out of the kitchen counters leftovers.
19:38We try to keep a subtle thread throughout the house.
19:46The kitchen is the most important room in the house.
19:49We host and we cook a lot.
19:51So we create this limestone countertop.
19:53The same stone that we're using for the living room table
19:56and some of the tables in the house.
19:58We paint the meal work ten times,
20:01but finally we got the color we want,
20:03and we create also these handles,
20:05as well the tiles.
20:07They're all hand-painted,
20:08and they go very well with all the artifacts
20:10that we use for cooking.
20:11We created a kitchen island that's really narrow.
20:14The dining table we designed is quite narrow,
20:16and it's wonderful for dinner parties
20:18because we can be at the table,
20:20washing, cooking,
20:21without ever leaving the room.
20:25We're on the second floor,
20:27and this is where our Sam's bedroom,
20:29our bedroom,
20:30and the guest bedroom are.
20:35Here we are at our room,
20:36and it's a peaceful place, I will say.
20:39The textiles are a mix between France and linen companies
20:42that we love,
20:43as well the racks from Taller Ocho in Oaxaca.
20:46These two side tables are made of the same material
20:48that we did, the kitchen counter,
20:50so it's like an upcycle material.
20:52So that is another piece of molding we moved
20:54that used to be outside,
20:56and we created the entrance here to our dressing closet.
20:59This room is the space that we enjoy most on weekends.
21:07Our home is a great representation of who we are,
21:10who we love, and everything we like.
21:12It's also our temple.
21:13It's where we like to spend most of the time,
21:15and thank you for taking a look.
21:19That's all for this week.
21:21We hope you enjoyed the tours today.
21:23Don't forget we'll be back next week with more homes,
21:25and of course design inspiration,
21:27but if you can't wait that long,
21:28do check us out on our YouTube channel
21:30and our Instagram page at OpenHouseTV.
21:33We're adding new pictures and videos and content all the time,
21:36just for you.
21:38Thanks so much for watching,
21:39and we'll see you next week.
