00:05Now this takes things to a whole new level.
00:09Dinner parties at your house just became the hottest reservation in town.
00:34I'm Sarah Gore and welcome to Open House NYC everyone.
00:37You are going to love what we have in store for you this week and I am bringing it all
00:41to you from the former West Village home of author and activist Jane Jacobs, whose work changed the way we
00:48think about cities.
00:50Originally built in the early 1840s, this special home effortlessly marries historic charm with modern everyday style.
00:57The loft-like living space is anchored by two original wood-burning fireplaces.
01:03It's the kind of room that just invites you to get comfortable.
01:07Settle in.
01:08The eat-in kitchen, bathed in natural light offers garden views and upstairs you'll find two bedrooms including a dreamy
01:16primary.
01:17And just beyond that, a private terrace that feels like a treehouse.
01:21We are getting started with designer and media personality Genevieve Gorder at her own dramatic duplex penthouse in Chelsea.
01:29See how she worked within the confines of the 1850s building to combine two units and create a stylish home
01:36for her family that feels personalized, charming, and always surprising inside or out.
01:44Enjoy.
01:49Hi, my name is Genevieve Gorder.
01:52I'm an interior designer and television personality and you are in my home in Chelsea, New York.
01:59It is two brownstones from 1863 connected.
02:05I love classic New York pre-war.
02:08And then I like to mix it with global collections that I pick up on all of my travels.
02:14So let's take a look.
02:19So you are in my kitchen.
02:21It's kind of the first thing you see when you walk in.
02:23I wanted to bring as much light in here as possible by opening up that back window as well as
02:29bringing light cabinetry all the way to the ceiling because why not?
02:34And I brought in a light colored stone and has these gold veins that I just love.
02:40So I just covered the whole kitchen in stone.
02:44My range is super important and I love her and she can do everything.
02:49It's like go-go gadget.
02:50You know, when you're entertaining in this house, everyone wants to be literally on you in the kitchen.
02:56So I've created kind of a runway.
02:59The floors, they're hand done.
03:01They're a French white oak.
03:03One of my favorite, favorite things about the house.
03:11So moving from the kitchen runway, we go into the dining room.
03:16This is all one long space.
03:18I wanted to open up the light as much as possible.
03:22We have a block-long garden in our backyard, so it's really, really quiet, which is also a really special
03:30detail of being on those top two floors.
03:32You get the most nature.
03:33The dining table, this is something my husband made.
03:37He is a furniture designer, which comes in really handy.
03:41This is an astrological pendant.
03:44You can see the band has all the signs circulating around it.
03:48And it's something, if I ever leave this house, this comes with me.
03:52The mirror, a vintage piece.
03:54And then I built two built-ins flanking the fireplace to just house neutral little pretties.
04:01This is a cantilever steel staircase that we designed.
04:05Under the stairway is a family photograph.
04:08This is after the Norwegian side just moved to Minnesota, and they are just having a big old party in
04:14the field with champagne.
04:16But I like that kind of memorabilia around me all the time.
04:20I'm that person in the family.
04:21I'm the collector.
04:26My husband and I chose to come upstairs because we wanted to basically sleep in the garden.
04:32This is an oasis of sleep and nature.
04:35It's basically all bed.
04:37So we have some verticality on the headboard.
04:41I've brought in an old tapestry that I really love to give it some textures.
04:44And then we have little sprinklings of furniture that my husband made because they're weird nooks and crannies that you
04:49can't buy off the shelf.
04:50Oh, yes, the bathtub.
04:53There's something really sweet about hopping out of the bath into your bed.
04:59Like, they're doing this in hotel rooms now, so I'm just going to say I am ahead of my time.
05:09So our front two decks are mostly for entertaining barbecue, dining outdoors, lounging under the pergola, and then the lawn
05:16side we use for pets, as well as big movie nights with bean bags.
05:21We also have all the views out here, and because Chelsea is historically landmarked, nothing's too tall.
05:28You can see all the rooftops.
05:29On the north side, we have two more roof terraces.
05:32These are quieter.
05:34We have a block-long garden with fully matured trees, and it's just more for the family and hanging out
05:42by yourself or just quietly.
05:44This is by far my favorite place in the whole house to be.
05:52Interior design is always about making everything as beautiful as you possibly can, but equally important to me as a
05:59designer is making it highly livable.
06:01And I definitely have expressed that in my home, and I'm ready for the next chapter.
06:09Thanks for the tour, Genevieve.
06:11Coming up next, we are invited into the new home of author and designer, Mikel Welch.
06:16Don't go anywhere.
06:25Welcome back, everyone.
06:26Now we're with interior designer and author, Mikel Welch.
06:29See how he reimagined this cozy retreat with a nod to his favorite English countryside escapes.
06:36Enjoy.
06:41Hi, I'm interior designer Mikel Welch, and I'm also a new author, and welcome to Welch Manor.
06:46The inspiration behind the design all started from a trip to the English countryside.
06:51I got obsessed with the Cotswolds.
06:55You're going to see lots of lush, English-inspired greenery throughout the space.
07:00Let's go check out the inside.
07:04So now we're in my living room.
07:06This is just like a quintessential English-style two-door cottage.
07:11As I was designing this space, I wanted to also play into that.
07:17It's important for me to make the home and the pieces tell the same story.
07:22So there are a lot of antiques in this space.
07:25You know, of course, I'm known for collecting objects from Italy and France, and I brought
07:29and incorporated a lot of those pieces into the design.
07:32So now that you've seen my living area, let's check out the space where I probably spend the
07:37second most amount of time in the house.
07:40That's the dining room.
07:46So now we're in my dining room, which has become one of my favorite spaces in the house.
07:51I love it because I have this really dramatic mural wallpaper.
07:56Again, it's channeling that English countryside vibe that's just like iconic with any design
08:02that you're going to see out in the Cotswolds.
08:04The mix that I always say is for every vintage piece, there needs to be a modern piece.
08:09And I'm so in love with these new dining chairs.
08:12I just love the curvature that it has here in the wood.
08:15I love my dining room.
08:20Welcome to my bedroom.
08:21I wanted to kind of play homage to that traditional old school lifestyle.
08:27So I went with the traditional steel bed, as you can see here.
08:31I wanted the drapery to be the star of the show in this room.
08:35And I just love how it adds an extra layer.
08:37The other area where I probably spend a little more time would be my desk area.
08:43And then at the end of the day, I finally get to rest and go outside to the backyard
08:48because that is where I like to relax.
08:55One of the biggest inspirations that I keep talking about is the Cotswolds out in England.
09:00So the Cotswolds is kind of like a storybook town.
09:03And I wanted to bring that storybook feel here to Los Angeles when I designed the space.
09:09One of the things that I kind of brought back from my trips were the love of herbs and vegetables.
09:15When you're at many of the restaurants, you will see a lot of the vegetables and herbs right there on
09:21the table.
09:21And so I wanted to bring that here.
09:23And I actually cook with these herbs every single night.
09:26It doesn't stop there, my friends.
09:28I decided to get a little unconventional here.
09:32This is where I do literally spend every morning before I get ready to go to work.
09:39When I have parties, I'll fill the bathtub with ice and then I'll actually lay all the drinks here
09:43so that it just gives a more theatrical moment.
09:46But I'm telling you, these tubs, there's so much that you can do with them
09:50outside of actually just sitting in the bathtub.
09:52And this is why I love my outdoor area.
09:58All right, friends.
09:59Well, I think you have seen every nook and cranny at Welch Manor.
10:03I hope you enjoyed it.
10:04Until next time, take care.
10:09Thanks for showing us around, Mikkel.
10:11And be sure to check out the forever home wherever you buy books.
10:15Coming up just after the break, a modern penthouse with amazing outdoor spaces.
10:20Don't go anywhere.
10:29Welcome back, everyone.
10:30And now we visit this striking triplex penthouse in Soho with dramatic 360-degree views.
10:36This home is an architectural statement filled with light, scale, and style all across its nearly 6,000 square feet.
10:45See for yourself.
10:49Hi, I'm Frances Katzen, and welcome to the penthouse at 350 West Brooklyn.
10:55This extraordinary triplex spans almost 6,000 square feet, not including some pretty amazing outdoor space that we'll get to
11:04later.
11:05For now, follow me.
11:07In true Soho style, the elevator opens directly into the apartment.
11:13You are immediately greeted by superb light and cinematic views.
11:18This entry gallery is perfect for your art collection and highlights the honest materials that run throughout, like white oak
11:26floors, stone walls, and glass.
11:32You come into this main entertaining space that features three exposures with ample room for both dining and lounging.
11:41An architectural history of New York City is all around you.
11:45Who needs a TV when you have one of the most dynamic backdrops to entertain you?
11:50There are high ceilings, deep-set windows that you can actually sit on, and a wood-burning fireplace with a
11:57reclaimed mantle.
11:58Not bad.
12:03This kitchen features a 14-foot waterfall-edge island, stainless steel cabinets, and only the best appliances, of course.
12:12Plus, some pretty amazing views.
12:20Down this floating-glass staircase, worthy of Cinderella, is another living room to showcase your art collection.
12:28I'm feeling speakeasy vibes here.
12:31It's even got a wet bar.
12:32Tequila, anyone?
12:34There are also four oversized bedrooms here.
12:37But why don't we take a look at the primary suite?
12:43Here, the location, the simplicity, and the sublime embrace to give you a warm, welcoming retreat.
12:50It features a wall of windows where you can step out onto your own private terrace.
12:57This is the first thing you see when you wake up here, and the last thing you see when you
13:03go to sleep.
13:04And if you think all of this is impressive, I have one more space to show you.
13:09Come on.
13:14Now, this takes things to a whole new level, literally and figuratively.
13:20Welcome to your own private rooftop oasis.
13:24360 degrees of unfettered views.
13:27But it's so much more than its views.
13:29A fireplace for all seasons?
13:31Don't worry.
13:32We got it.
13:33How about a hot tub?
13:34All yours.
13:35And dinner parties at your house just became the hottest reservation in town.
13:39There's a grill, a wet bar, and even a powder room up here.
13:44Everything you need to host the party of the year.
13:47This is Soho Living Redefined.
13:55Thank you so much for joining me on the tour today.
13:58I hope you've seen that this triplex, located at 350 West Broadway, combines the best of loft and penthouse living
14:06in one of New York City's best neighborhoods.
14:09I'll see you next time.
14:12Coming up just after the break, star agent Steve Gold shows us how it's the little things that make a
14:17big statement.
14:28Welcome back, everyone.
14:30Now, star agent Steve Gold has brokered some of the city's most talked about deals on camera and off.
14:36But nothing meant more than creating a bespoke home for his family in Soho.
14:40Take a look.
14:44Hey, I'm Steve Gold, and welcome to my penthouse loft in the heart of Soho.
14:48When I bought this loft, it looked nothing like this.
14:51The same owner lived here for over 25 years, and I was coming in with my new young family.
14:56I wanted to bring it up to today's luxury standards without compromising what makes loft living so special.
15:02So let's go take a look at exactly what I did.
15:09The elevator opens directly into the loft, and you enter into this expansive great room.
15:14Immediately, you notice one of the best characteristics of this loft, incredible light.
15:21You've got a western exposure, northern exposure, and two of the home's five skylights.
15:26You also notice the original details, like cast iron and wood columns, and the original ceiling beams that frame the
15:32living and dining areas.
15:33I also am in love with these floors.
15:36These floors are old-growth oak from Denmark.
15:40They had to be brought in through the windows because they're 16-inch wide and up to 20 feet in
15:45length.
15:46The beauty of the grain, the intricate butterfly joints, these floors are a work of art in and of themselves.
15:56Loft living is all about wide-open spaces, but you want each area to be defined and have its own
16:02vibe.
16:03I designed this place for my family, but also for entertaining.
16:07I've hosted over 100 people in this great room while my daughter slept down the hall.
16:11We kept all the furniture low-profile so we didn't obstruct the sight lines from each area.
16:17I wrapped the walls in Venetian plaster, giving it a slight sheen and lots of texture.
16:22It's also a great backdrop for anyone's art collection, including my own.
16:26The architectural details continue in the cool curves I brought to the windows, as well as the shadow reveal that
16:32I brought to the floor, which makes the walls appear to float.
16:36So why don't we float over to the kitchen?
16:40I took great care in choosing the materials for this home.
16:43This 12-foot island is made from Calcutta Paonazzo stone.
16:47You'll notice the curved edges of the countertop, which echo the architectural details of the window.
16:52We integrated the cooktop into the stone.
16:54Not the easiest for fabrication and installation, but definitely the best for looks.
16:59And to be honest, it's incredibly functional as well.
17:03The stone continues up the backsplash.
17:05We match the veining.
17:06Even these bocce outlets are integrated into the stone.
17:10These are the design details I love.
17:13Custom cabinetry both hides the appliances and provides plenty of storage.
17:17And just off the kitchen is a windowed home office, which I consider lucky.
17:21Because I've made quite a few deals there.
17:24The private wing has three en-suite bedrooms, all pin-drop quiet.
17:28But follow me into the primary.
17:35I designed our bedroom to be cinematic and luxurious, like the hotel room of your dreams.
17:40It faces east, so we get beautiful morning light.
17:44And two walk-in closets flank the king-size bed, which in my home makes everyone happy.
17:49You'll notice we preserved the original columns and beams.
17:52And at one end of the room is a comfortable seating area for two.
17:55At the other end, a freestanding clawfoot bathtub.
17:59I'm a huge fan of functional statement pieces.
18:02And nothing makes a statement quite like this.
18:08So that's it.
18:09My dream New York City loft.
18:11I hope you enjoyed viewing it as much as I enjoyed designing it and living it.
18:15Until next time.
18:20Coming up, take an ultra-modern condo, but make it a treehouse.
18:25Don't go anywhere.
18:25That's what we're going to show you after the break.
18:36Welcome back, everyone.
18:37Now we're at one of the more unique homes you'll ever see.
18:40Architect Andrew Hyde created something of a legend in the West Village, and it's dubbed
18:45the Urban Treehouse.
18:47Ooh, a treat.
18:48Say why.
18:53Going up in Oregon, nature was a huge inspiration for me to become an architect.
18:58And I also feel that there's so much nature missing in our modern life.
19:02I'm Andrew Hyde.
19:03I'm the founding principal of Know Architecture based in New York City.
19:06Welcome to the Urban Treehouse here in the West Village.
19:09Come on in and I'll show you around.
19:14As soon as you walk in, you realize that this is not the modernist white box
19:18that the rest of this building looks like.
19:20This is a very different palette of materials.
19:22It's very organic.
19:23It's very warm.
19:24It's very muted.
19:25It's very natural.
19:26Off of the main entry space is this pantry area where we continue the use of natural
19:31materials like the exposed concrete, the stone, the wood, and a sense of compression before
19:37we enter into the main double-height living space.
19:43This is the release.
19:44This is the wow factor.
19:46This is why we call it the Urban Treehouse.
19:47In every direction, you see windows, and your eye goes out to the natural landscape and
19:52the river and the horizon beyond.
19:54Because of this dramatic scale, from the outside, these treehouses look like a public
19:58work of art.
19:59And the original concept was for a much more enclosed structure.
20:02We realized we had to make something much more transparent and light, and hence the netting
20:06became really important for that.
20:08Like a giant piece of furniture, the treehouses are meant to be sat on, slept on, interacted with
20:13in a very active, dynamic way.
20:15The clients love to entertain here, have people jump up and down on the nets, and to enjoy
20:20the whole city space through these 22-foot glass windows.
20:27Under this second treehouse is a dining space that is then connected to the main kitchen.
20:32For the dining area, we wanted something very intimate.
20:34I chose this Aero Saarinen dining table surrounded by Danish Morgensen chairs because of the lightness
20:40of the structure and the cantilevered quality they bring.
20:42Surrounding this dining table are these large concrete fiber reinforced planters that create
20:48this relationship between the trees on the outside and the trees on the inside.
20:52After all, what is a treehouse without trees?
21:00The urban treehouse for me is a really important project because it represents the spiritual
21:05harmony between architecture and nature.
21:07I hope you enjoy taking a look at this dream project of mine.
21:11Thanks so much for coming.
21:15That's all for this week.
21:16We hope you enjoyed these tours today.
21:18Don't forget, we'll be back next week with more homes and design inspiration, of course.
21:22But if you can't wait that long, check us out online on our YouTube channel and our Instagram
21:27page at OpenHouseTV.
21:29We're adding new stuff all the time.
21:30And send us some messages and comments.
21:32Let us know what you want to see because we read them.
21:35Thanks so much for watching, and I'll see you next time.
21:42We'll see you then.
21:44Bye.
