00:58we are the Harlem Globetrotters for nearly 100 years we made people smile we changed the game now the new
01:07team is here
01:08to play it forward
01:12every great legacy team eventually comes to a point where the veterans have moved on and they have to build
01:18a new dynasty
01:18today torch takes TNT and Ace to help her high school basketball team find new inspiration
01:30so we are here in Noonan Georgia at my former high school Noonan high so excited to be back and
01:38I brought my girls TNT and Ace with me these ladies are preparing for a tryout coming up okay
01:43they're in rebuild mode so we're gonna walk them through a series of drills and get them ready for the
01:47tryout all right y'all ready y'all with me
01:49me and Torch have been teammates for nine years now and to be able to come back and see where
01:55she played basketball it means a lot and I know it means a lot to her to be able to
01:58come back and give back to her program
02:00hey coach
02:01hey how are you
02:03good to see you
02:03good to see you
02:03good to see you
02:04good to see you
02:04I've been the head coach here for two years when I took over the program they hadn't won any games
02:10the previous year and last year we won five total games
02:14so this team is actually going through a rebuild right now and that just means you know they're kind of
02:19starting from scratch and building that foundation which is really important
02:22all right ladies bring it to the middle
02:25how's everybody doing today
02:27good
02:27so my name is Sherelle George I played here at Noonan 20 years ago but it feels good to be
02:34able to come back and give back to a high school that created so many memories for myself my family
02:39excited to see my niece now playing for Noonan
02:42my niece Jamiah she's a sophomore this year last year she had an incredible freshman year leading the team in
02:50scoring
02:50I've been playing basketball since six years old with my brothers family friends and also my auntie Sherelle George
02:58we're looking forward to playing with y'all see what y'all got play some games and you ain't got
03:02to be nervous we're here to have a good time
03:04I think just be yourself and just play the game that you know
03:08when coach told me the globe tribes were coming out I felt honored that they would want to come help
03:14us get better as girls and see young girls that are trying to get up at their level
03:17so the first drill I'll run the ladies through is a dribbling drill I feel like if you're a point
03:22guard shooting guard post everybody should be able to handle the basketball
03:25keep your head up when you dribble I gotta see my defender I gotta do with my head up I
03:30gotta see my teammates practice like you wanna play
03:33all right let's go left side 25 go
03:36they are pretty competitive but also caring at the same time they see us make a mistake they're going to
03:42correct us
03:44there we go get there good job
03:47beat her to that spot beat her to that spot cut that baseline off
03:51you gotta slide your feet and some of your feet you're crossing your feet all right your feet always parallel
03:56and you're sliding you're trying to play defense standing up
03:58if I see a defender standing straight up bye bye it's over
04:02I am honored that the globe tried to came to work with us because I feel like we needed someone
04:07to come in here and help us work on our skills
04:11Maya
04:13I feel like it's important to talk to my niece it's important that she knows I believe in her and
04:17I just want her to stay focused
04:19she's got an amazing gift
04:20recap on your freshman years your freshman on varsity
04:23yeah
04:24how do you feel about how you ended that season
04:26um I felt good
04:27how about your leadership
04:28I feel like my leadership is better now since I'm not a freshman and not as shy
04:32do you ever feel the pressure to live up to like my name and being a George like do people
04:37come up to you and say oh your aunt is
04:39you shouldn't have no pressure to live up to me you know you're creating your own legacy for you
04:44yeah she wants me to follow my goals follow my dreams and become myself over the coming years
04:50I'm living proof that if you work hard you believe in yourself anything is possible
04:56now it's time for what we all love and that's playing five on five
05:01here we go
05:10the advice that I want to give to the girls is focus on the small things such as communication
05:15lifting each other up and I feel like that sportsmanship and that attitude is going to take the season to
05:21an all-time high
05:25what the ladies taught me today is to believe in myself never shut down have a positive attitude
05:36my overall goal is for them to take pride back in the program that we're building and that people can
05:42come to new and women's basketball games and be like this is a team that fights till the end
05:48you ladies have fun today yeah I feel like the effort today was amazing and being a part of a
05:55team is so awesome like take pride in wearing that jersey every day
05:59if I could encourage you to do anything like I said don't leave off the court without feeling like you
06:03got better at something
06:04you all are special in your individual way work on your strengths and your weaknesses
06:10I think it's such a cool thing to come back to towards this old stomping grounds because this is where
06:15she left her legacy
06:17and now she gets to pass down the torch to them
06:20going into the season I want the ladies to have fun and just leave it on the court every single
06:24night
06:24Cougars on three, one, two, three, Cougars!
06:30Coming up next Jet takes a walk to remember
06:35then Torch, Thunder and Lou introduce us to Coach Scooter
06:40and Moose tosses up a trick shot with style and grace
06:43sometimes you got to talk to the basketball
06:50we'll be right back to the more you know on NBC

09:21so we're done with the stroll and I get the opportunity to sit down and talk to Robert
09:31I had my first child when I was 21 at the time I didn't have anyone that I could look
09:37towards as far as an example
09:40what made you you know when to get down with the club
09:42just to see the example man I think is necessary man
09:46everybody comes from different walks of life
09:48a lot of us never been taught how to be a dad
09:51be honest man I have no idea what I'm doing
09:54this process with the twins being there every day seeing the whole process
09:58that's the part that has changed my life
10:01to be able to be amongst these fellas you can learn from so many different people

11:25a father
11:26this was a great experience being able to come out here with Calvin and see the work that he does

11:36i'm definitely looking forward to bringing something like this back to jersey
11:39this is a group who's going to hold me accountable for not only being a great dad
11:44but doing everything that i said that i'm going to do
11:47my children i think they're going to get the best version of me
11:51coming up we meet one of the unsung heroes of the globetrotter coaching staff
11:57and then moose sinks an impossible shot
11:59watch this right here yeah
12:06we'll be right back to the more you know on nbc
12:12we now return to the more you know on nbc
12:19each of the globetrotter coaches has their own special sauce
12:23and for coach scooter the true impact doesn't come from the spotlight
12:27it comes from the desire to lift others up check it out
12:35my name is shane christensen and i've been with the world famous holland globetrotters for 19 years and everyone calls
12:40me scooter
12:46my first year as a globetrotter i remember feeling nervous wanting to do good
12:50and they start showing you all the tricks of the trade
12:54spinning of the ball and going between the legs behind the back and i said
12:59what did i get myself into
13:02that ball was attached to my hand on the bus
13:04and practice you know going to the hotel in my room just practicing non-stop of wanting to get better
13:11and slowly and surely it did
13:13scooter's the first person i've ever seen spin a ball in his nose
13:16that's what i was known for having the guinness world record of 7.7 seconds which was pretty cool
13:22he was like the robin to the batman which is the showman
13:26tonight tonight you're gonna have the time of your life
13:31stop touching me stop touching me
13:33he don't need the accolades never needed a recognition
13:36just wanted to have a great show put on a great show every night
13:39scooter was like one of the first people to really take me up under his wing
13:42he was the first person to let me know that you could never master being a globetrotter
13:46and there's always something to get better at
13:47scooter was that teammate that took time out to really show me the ropes
13:52right just hey what do you need help on you know i want you to be a great dribbler
13:57i want you to be a good globetrotter so whatever you need i'm here to help
14:01my favorite part was always just giving back to the fans and making them smile and making them feel good
14:07in vegas at the hospital there was this program where we just go to each room
14:12there was this kid in there i'm signing autographs
14:14and i'm uh spinning the ball and i'm taking pictures with them and all this stuff
14:20i come out of that room his dad's crying his mom's crying the doctor's crying
14:25and then my first initial thought was
14:29but uh did i do something wrong i'm i'm so sorry they said no we haven't seen our son smile
14:34in about three months
14:35and to hear that uh you can change somebody's life with something that i do
14:42it just it gets you every time
14:45i probably never said this scooter before i admire what you've done as a player
14:52i've admired what you've done as a father now i'm admiring what you're doing as a coach
14:59we both knew it's something bigger than us
15:01when they first approached me about being a coach i was taken by surprise a little bit
15:06but then it's just something in you that i knew that i could do
15:10of course i was nervous and kind of they're going to respect me you know i've been playing with these
15:14guys
15:15now now i'm going to coach them and how's that transition going to be you know
15:18and i think he's doing a very good job of separating himself from a player to a coach
15:23people respect scooter because he's a great leader and he leads by example
15:28the spontaneity of the glow charters is because we know what works i love giving these guys my knowledge
15:33because everything that they've been through i've been through it myself
15:37in my eyes he's a legend he's done it at the highest level he's been the best at his position
15:42as long as i'm here and i can give my knowledge i'm here so i don't plan on going anywhere
15:47anytime soon
15:50stay tuned because when we come back moose takes his signature shot on the court at venice beach
15:59we'll be right back to the more you know on nbc
16:05we now return to the more you know on nbc
16:12every globetrotter loves to work on innovating their own trick shot to highlight their unique talents and flair
16:18and on today's big shots we head to venice beach to watch moose use his legendary wingspan to pull off
16:25a shot
16:25that is a work of art
16:33what's up guys it's moose here at the beautiful iconic venice beach
16:38i'm gonna teach you guys the secrets behind my backhanded smackball trick shot
16:44i shoot this shot from half court first i balance the basketball right here on the back of my hand
16:52i don't look at the goal it's back there i know it i sense it and then
17:02and guys i'm right-handed okay i'm right-handed
17:10a one-handed backward shot from half court and he doesn't even look at the basket
17:15like any good magician moose is using several techniques to pull this off
17:20one of them is sound
17:26i didn't hear a sound and when i don't hear anything that means it didn't hit anything
17:32okay
17:33i even follow the sound of the bounce
17:36i'm gonna do this to the ball coming back to my hand because i don't want to look at
17:39it
17:39by listening to where the ball hits moose creates a mental map of the basket's position
17:44and then he adjusts his aim and force based on the echo he hears
17:49kind of like seeing with his ears
18:01when you get to the beach you know it's a little windy there's seagulls everywhere
18:07so you really have to just lock in
18:10venice beach isn't exactly a controlled environment
18:13remember he's using sound to make this shot
18:17the science behind filtering out noise to focus on specific sounds
18:21is known as selective auditory attention
18:23this is a brain process that lets us focus on important sounds
18:27like the sound of the basketball hitting the rim
18:30while tuning out distractions
18:31like all those tourists at venice beach
18:37now i know what i need to know i'm gonna step over just a little bit
18:41a little calibration
18:43one thing i didn't tell y'all they call me moosa the master
18:46moose lee run the kung fu extraordinaire with the hair
18:49watch this right here yeah
19:03would that be called a reverse palm i don't know it was great but that's all we have time for
19:09today
19:09remember you don't have to be a harlem globetrotter to make the world a better place
19:13all you have to do is show a little kindness to the people in your everyday life
19:18we'll see you next time on play it forward
19:22music
19:23music
19:41I've fallen by Hoyt.
19:43Whoa!
19:45Hear it! Hear it!
