00:21that highlight the power of determination teamwork and of course a whole lot of heart
00:26so stay tuned coming up coach Lou and the team helped put together a one-of-a-kind surprise
00:34then a few Globetrotters have some memorable first I just started trying to dance with it the beat kind
00:40of came naturally plus cheese answers a fan question yes we create our own little bonds
00:45that's my brother from another mother and Jet tosses up a sweet granny shot oh yeah
00:59we are the Harlem Globetrotters for nearly 100 years we made people smile we changed the game
01:06now the new team is here to play it forward
01:12coach Lou has been on many grand adventures but he has never forgotten what it felt like to be a
01:17kid
01:17in Louisiana who couldn't afford a bike today he and the team joined one young trailblazer
01:23who is transforming lives two wheels at a time
01:30now this place we're going to today it's called Dom Fix It Bikes as a kid I never had a
01:36bike so let's go see what he's up to
01:41Dom what is up what's up my man how you doing good how are you sweet Lou good to meet
01:47you Dom Dom nice to meet you
01:48how you doing TNT what's up man I'm Thunder nice to meet you guys so Dom when did you start
01:53doing this
01:54I started when I was 10 so I was really really young I am just unboxing a front end trying
02:01to put the handlebars on
02:02and I was riding bikes I was breaking bike after bike after bike so I went to my mom I
02:07was like mom
02:07I need this bike it's it's my dream bike it was three thousand dollars though so I just was like
02:13hey I'll pay for it so I started fixing bikes in the neighborhood pandemic hit and I was the place
02:18to
02:18kind of get your bike fixed it blew up and then at the end of the year a couple thousand
02:22dollars saved
02:22up so I went to my mom was like let's buy brand new bikes for kids for Christmas pretty much
02:26just to
02:26kind of give back to the community I just grew from there we bought six that year and then we
02:31did
02:31nine the following year and then we turned it to an official nonprofit and we did 27 and then last
02:37year was our first year and the storefront and we did 121 at 15 he seems so young to be
02:43doing all
02:44this you know amazing things I just think he's just an excellent role model and as an adult it's
02:48aspiring to me so Dom we're excited to know what what are we doing today we are building
02:55a bike and a four-wheeler for a family who has a kid with special needs so they're coming later
03:03today we're gonna help you yep you're helping me build the bike it's time to get to work and
03:08start building these bikes now what bike is this this is a four-wheeler we're like pulling this bike
03:13out and it's like heavy-duty like this is the real deal like you've done this before a couple times
03:19I like working on bikes actually so I'm up for the challenge four-wheeled bike is
03:24specifically engineered to help kids with special needs they're very hard to tip over very easy to
03:30ride very simple but yet engineered to the point where they're still super super safe
03:36what are your goals for your company just to keep expanding growing getting as many kids on bikes as
03:42we possibly can now do you usually just provide the bikes for kids or do some adults whoever really
03:49applies we try and our best to get them a bike whether they're struggling from addiction needing
03:55a bike to get back on their feet whether they're homeless all right whatever the situation is we
04:00want to help them we want to help everyone TNT is doing the behind-the-scenes kind of logistical stuff
04:06on the
04:07bikes and Thunder's you know doing the big heavy lifting coach Lou is doing nothing at all
04:11sitting down telling us what to do well T you probably can put the pebbles on he called himself
04:16the supervisor coaching is supervising you are good supervisor right when I was growing up man I never
04:25had a bike so I started trying to make me a bike piece me a bike together I wasn't that
04:30good when I
04:31first joined the glove trials I bought me a bike and it was a 10 speed bike was about this
04:36tall and I still
04:37have that back today I think I did pretty good over here is this all yeah your expert expert eye
04:51good let's go yeah nice so Dom just let us know the family's almost here so we got to get
05:01ready to
05:01give these bikes away I bring my family in and blessing this feeling anxious until she sees that
05:15the surprise was my bike when she saw which one was hers she was on and she was ready to
05:20ride we brought
05:22them helmets wrist guards elbow pads knee pads push push you know I feel happy that there's people
05:31still out here that do nice things it's great because this world can be harsh so we need more
05:37great people like Dom helping a community that's a wonderful and beautiful thing seeing them with a
05:43massive smile it kind of makes me feel you know great and I just want to keep doing and you
05:48know never
05:48stop coming up next hammer thunder and wham infuse some showmanship into a very special drum line I
05:57have never played in the drum line so it's gonna be fun and Jett shows his granny some love I
06:03love the
06:03granny shop is I love my grandma's we'll be right back to the more you know on NBC
06:15we now return to the more you know on NBC
06:22the Globetrotter showmen are known around the world for their dazzling tricks and electric
06:26personalities and today they visit a community outreach program to help the kids feel the groove
06:32with some globe try to flare we are here in New Orleans at the youth empowerment project also
06:44known as yep and we're here to learn a little bit about the drum line and they're gonna teach us
06:48what's up and how to get down hey y'all what's up how's it going all right welcome to the
06:52youth
06:53empowerment project how you guys nice to meet y'all you're a girl how you doing the youth empowerment
06:58project was started to help kids coming home from the juvenile justice system to
07:02reintegrate into the community this is just one of several locations so we have more locations on
07:06the block that house our main offices and our workforce development programs this is our youth
07:11center so we run after-school programs out of this building Monday through Friday to give the kids a
07:16safe space to be after school and then during the summer this flips over to a free summer camp for
07:21kids in our community what kind of programs do you have here to keep the kids like off of the
07:27streets
07:27and out of the system so our flagship program is our mentoring program we also have our adult ed
07:32programs that provide services to young people that may have not gotten their high school credential
07:36and still need to do that we have our workforce development program that allows kids 16 to 24 to
07:42practice their job skills what are we going to be doing here today so what you're here to see us
07:47do
07:47today is our own in-house drum line the culture in Louisiana in New Orleans very much musical inclined
07:55and so we wanted to give the young people an opportunity to participate in that hopefully we
07:59can make some music I can dance to oh I think I think we can make it busy what has
08:16the program done for you
08:17personally you said it helps you with your anger and personal problems that's amazing I'm two though
08:27and I've been coming to YAP for five years I mean I used to have anger problems but I just
08:32get mad at
08:33every little thing people tends to bully him because of his size or whatever and that's when he had
08:38those outbursts and I would just teach him like people want to talk about you all the time like you
08:43can't control what people say so like just use that and put it into music and that's what he's been
08:48doing he came a long way when I play a little drum roll it'll be good I have something else
08:53to focus on
08:54you really try to instill the younger generation to chase their dreams and put their best foot
08:59forward to you know have a better life dream big and don't be afraid to fail and like to be
09:04able
09:04to get here I failed a lot but I kept going have that confidence to know you're going to make
09:08it and
09:08just work hard and listen we all go through things to have something like this it's amazing to be able
09:13to have mentors go somewhere where you know your love you're safe the best thing about drum line is
09:18I get to make new friends and new bandmates I have never played in the drum line so it's
09:28going to be fun interacting with the kids and taking it step by step and learning from them
09:32we'll start in the beginning so I want y'all to hit on one and three I got high one
09:36two three four
09:38so it's going to be right rest left rest one two ready play one two three four one two three
09:48four
09:49when he gives me the first couple beats it's like it's not flowing and then I realized like I'm one
09:54of the ones I really love to dance so I just started trying to dance with it and after I
09:57tried to put my own move to it the beat kind of came naturally when I look over at C
10:03Thunder dancing
10:04I start feeling the rhythm and I couldn't help but start dancing my own self so I was relying heavy
10:12on Davon to keep me on beat and keep me on pace because uh he had it down packed he'd
10:16been here
10:17for a while he knew what he was doing I'm gonna drum I feel so good about myself because I
10:22get to
10:22teach people and learn myself
10:46good job that was good that was good it was working out today
10:51I feel like music is a coping mechanism like music it calms you down it relieves stress
10:59I think this project is doing an amazing job I'm looking at the kids faces and I'm seeing they are
11:04in that element and they're looking at us like all right I can just watch them like all right they're
11:08picking this up and they were starting to get into it I really enjoyed it and it just made for
11:13some
11:13good music I think it's important that they see people like us people who share the same face
11:18out here doing something positive uh in the community you know that's something they can
11:22use as a role model so hopefully one day when they grow up you know they can be that mentor
11:27and
11:28influencer best part today was seeing the Harlem Globetrotters come here and put these smiles on
11:35these kids faces and light them up I think it opened their eyes wow like I could do this I
11:40could do that
11:41I could be this I could be that I just feel like it opened our eyes to more than what
11:46they see in the neighborhood
11:49after the break cheese and Hotshot have all the answers when you see cheese and Hotshot together you say oh
11:55that's Lauren Hardy
11:56and Jet heads to the most famous streetball basketball court in the world
12:04we'll be right back to the more you know on NBC
12:10we now return to the more you know on NBC
12:17welcome back year after year the Globetrotters inspire kids all over the world and today
12:23one of cheese's biggest fans has a great question for him check it out
12:35the Globetrotters always try to give their fans a chance to get all their questions out during the fifth quarter
12:42but sometimes they have more questions today we have a question from 13 year old Eva from Melbourne Australia
12:52I would consider myself a Globetrotters super fan cheese is my favorite player because he had a full
12:57conversation with me and gave me his sweatband I have two questions for cheese my first question
13:02is what inspired you to become a basketball player and my second is is a team like family to you
13:09what inspired me to be a basketball player was really my heart and I would say my dad as well
13:16he taught me the game of basketball just watching NBA games on TV with him or college basketball games
13:21with him on TV I play since I was six years old I work my tail off all the way
13:27through middle school
13:28all the way through high school to get a full athletic scholarship to Ball State University where I
13:32graduated I know I still want to play professionally it was one thing that nobody had to tell me to
13:37do I go to
13:38the gym I work on my craft listen up whatever you want to do find that passion fight for it
13:45never
13:46let nobody change your mind about it what time is it is this team like family to me well I
13:53would say
13:53yes because we're around each other four months five months out of the year you need each other in order
13:59to get the job done and win games and create memories so yes we create our own little bonds but
14:06one in
14:06particular I would have to say it's like my brother is high shot I met high shot when I was
14:12in
14:12elementary school and I grew up playing basketball against Jumaane and that's where we first became
14:17arch rivals I played against him in a championship game I lied to you not and went triple overtime he
14:24beat me in that triple overtime game but that's my brother from another mother I was on the Globetrotters
14:30a few years before high shot and when he called me about getting on the team I just played it
14:35forward for him because somebody helped me when I was in a vulnerable state and I just shared my
14:41resources with him and look man he's he's a superstar my relationship with Broly now it developed in the
14:49sense of it just made us a brothers on and off the court we together when you see cheese and
14:54hot shot
14:54together you say oh that's Laura and Hardy there they go but they love each other to death man that's
15:00that New York combination we got going on there I think the future holds for me and cheese is we're
15:04going to still be brothers we may not be bouncing the board together but our life will still keep bouncing
15:10together honestly I mean I think we're friends for life Eva I hope that answers your question
15:21don't move a muscle because when we come back Jed has a big shot that you'll want to see
15:29we'll be right back to the more you know on NBC
15:35we now return to the more you know on NBC
15:42welcome to big shots where we break down the most electrifying trick shots of the Harlem Globetrotters
15:48today we're with one of the best Lateef Jet Rivers as he shows us a basketball classic check it out
16:00what's up everybody this Lateef Jet Rivers from the world famous Harlem Globetrotters and we're here
16:05in New York the Mecca of basketball at one of the most legendary parks ever Rucker Park and I'm gonna
16:12show you my trick shot oh that's cash yeah I love the granny shop first and foremost because I love
16:29my
16:30grandmas I never did the granny shop before I was a Globetrotter honestly never even really practiced
16:38it one time in training camp we were kind of you know messing around and I asked coach Lou to
16:44let me
16:44shoot it in the game and he said why you only let you shoot it you're not even gonna hit
16:48the rim
16:48and then I got it and I shot it and I made it on the first try he was like
16:53oh luck that's lucky let's
16:56say hey you gotta give me a shot now so what makes the granny shot so tough from this distance
17:03it's all
17:04about trajectory and force Jet has to lean forward about 30 degrees to launch the ball the full 75
17:10feet that's about double the four-point line distance the ball reaches its apex or max height
17:17of the arc right about the three-point line so it climbs for the first two-thirds of the shot
17:23and then
17:24drops in in the last one-third before you shoot a granny shot you got to get in your mode
17:30and get the
17:31crowd involved clap them up I got to hear them going crazy because now it's that pressure on me to
17:37make it
17:38they're looking at me to make the shot that I just told them I'm gonna make and I like that
17:43kind of
17:43pressure and then I do a little ball handling it's like at a free throw line how everybody got their
17:49routine you know I take three dribbles and I spin it same thing with my granny shot I do a
17:54little you know
17:55twist between the legs roll throw it up over my shoulder to catch it I look at that rim and
18:00then I get
18:01a nice deep squat and I kind of reach back and when I release it I try to spin it
18:06like a regular
18:07jump shot so when it hits the rim or if it hits the rim it's a soft touch and then
18:12give it a chance to
18:13spin in or roll in spin is crucial Jett makes sure his fingers are perfectly aligned with the laces of
18:24the ball to get that backspin this spin helps the ball have a softer landing on the rim increasing the
18:31chances it'll bounce in shooting a granny shot you have to use every single muscle in your body you
18:38have to have the explosion and your legs and in your core to get you off the ground to get
18:44enough on from
18:45the ball to get to the rim notice how Jett jumps forward transferring all that momentum into the ball
18:52it's not just about arm strength he's using every muscle in his body from his legs to his core to
18:59generate
18:59that force give it to me oh yeah that's all we have for today remember you don't have to be
19:10a Harlem Globetrotter
19:11to make the world a better place all you have to do is show a little kindness to the people
19:16in your everyday life we'll see you next time on Play It Forward
19:27you
19:49Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
