00:05What's up, Meekins family?
00:10As a mom, you can't explain moments like this.
00:14Oh, yeah!
00:16I'm just in a loss for words for what you did for us.
00:19Are you kidding me?
00:21I just wanted to say from the bottom of our hearts,
00:23you are all forever a part of Kira's crew.
00:29Hi, I'm Christy.
00:30We're here in Wanto, New York.
00:32I live here with my three boys, Kira, Matthew, and Emmett.
00:36I am a self-contained special ed teacher in Freeport.
00:40This year I teach third grade, so I'm kind of in it all day,
00:44and then I come home to the boys.
00:48Here, Emmett!
00:50There's a lot of energy.
00:52There's a lot of love, but it's chaotic, right?
00:55It's fun.
00:59It's fun to beat you up.
01:00The dynamic is great.
01:02They are tough on each other, and I tell them all the time,
01:05like, you have to have each other's back and you love each other.
01:09They're tough on Kira, just because of his disability.
01:11They don't let him win a basketball.
01:14That's a foul!
01:15They don't see him as any different.
01:18He's just their brother.
01:21Kira was born six weeks early.
01:23He was struggling to breathe.
01:24He was on a ventilator for the first 24 hours, and they had detected a brain bleed.
01:30At 16 months old, we were directed to go to a physiatrist, which is a doctor of physical medicine,
01:36and she diagnosed him with spastic diplegia.
01:41Spastic diplegia is a form of cerebral palsy that primarily affects leg mobility.
01:46Kira has bravely endured years of pain, frustration, and medical procedures while making significant strides.
01:52There was this surgery called SDR, and they basically go through your back.
01:56They lift it up the back like a hood of a car, is how the doctor explained it.
02:00And they snipped all of his nerve endings two-thirds of the way through to release all of the tightness
02:06in his legs.
02:07But, you know, we had a motto with him that it's not going to be easy, but it's going to
02:10be worth it.
02:13Whoopsie.
02:14As he's getting older now, he's more aware of his disability himself.
02:20And that's where we're starting to see the struggles.
02:22And, you know, he gets upset.
02:25He's in a regular class.
02:27He goes to school on the regular bus.
02:29It's just his physical disability, and it's been hard on him.
02:33Kieran works extremely hard to perform daily activities that many folks take for granted.
02:37While his mother and brothers support him each step of the way, their home is in need of some strategic
02:42changes that would help optimize space, comfort, safety, and continued therapy progress.
02:47So the sleeping arrangement upstairs for the boys, when we bought the house, there's a bathroom upstairs and then two
02:52decent side bedrooms on either side.
02:54But at that point, I was pregnant with Emmett.
02:57So my dad built a wall.
03:00So it's kind of like two-thirds of a bedroom and one-third.
03:02By now, as everybody's bigger, we're busting out of everything up there, literally.
03:08My bedroom is like I have to share it with him.
03:11And he snores a lot.
03:13My room is like a one-by-one cubic inch.
03:16I could barely even move in there.
03:19It's so strong.
03:23The basement is cramped.
03:25There's always something going on, like buckets of toys, there's shoes, there's clothes.
03:30The idea of doing the basement or even minor changes in the boys' bedroom is just, it's just too far
03:36-fetched.
03:37It's not feasible and possible for me right now.
03:40A rescue would mean so much.
03:41It's something that I've wanted to do for the boys for a while and they've been asking.
03:45So I feel like this is for Karen, but there's a piece that this is just so touching and overwhelming
03:52for me because it's not easy for me to do things that I want, you know, right away.
03:57It would be helpful if George came to the rescue for my mom.
04:01If George came to the rescue, I would be really excited because our basement would be more fun.
04:07What's up, Karen? How's it going, man?
04:10Yeah, is that Christy? What's up? Come on down!
04:13I just wanted to say that we're coming to the rescue.
04:15We're going to fix up this house for you guys, all right?
04:17We are so impressed with you.
04:19You are such an inspiration.
04:22You are, like, strong beyond your years.
04:25We love you guys and we're coming to the rescue.
04:28Woo!
04:29All right.
04:31George the Rescue is sponsored in part by Filtrete Air Filters.
04:34Don't just treat your air, Filtrete it.
04:41I just wanted to say that we're coming to the rescue.
04:44We're going to fix up this house for you guys, all right?
04:46We came to the Meekins house because of Kieran and his battle with cerebral palsy.
04:53But we're never doing a rescue.
04:54It's never just for that person.
04:56It's for the family as a whole.
04:57We had to figure out how we can make the house just kind of meet their reality.
05:01Leading the way is our general contractor, Joe from Gold Hill Construction,
05:05and our designer, the one and only Chassidy from Reese Design.
05:09The one thing that I really want to do is make this super functional for them to, like, be a
05:14little active.
05:15They are rambunctious boys.
05:17They're good at that.
05:17They're going to be more than a little active.
05:19I want to push this wall back.
05:21Okay.
05:22And then an idea that I have.
05:23Oh, no.
05:24I want to build a wall out here along that soffit.
05:28And I want to create a shooting lane for a basketball.
05:30So, wall right here.
05:32And so this is like a play area, shooting area.
05:34We could also do hockey.
05:36Is this concerning?
05:37Why?
05:37Why?
05:39Because it's like growth.
05:39I'm in the middle.
05:40It's a growth on the wall.
05:42Maybe it's not.
05:44I wouldn't touch it.
05:45You could.
05:46Yeah, wipe it down.
05:47Sorry.
05:48So right now, the basement, it's not really conducive to Kieran hanging out down there.
05:54I really want to give him a space where he can do some PT.
05:57I do want to create like under the stair cubbies.
06:01Okay.
06:01So even if he has like little weights or whatever, he can stick that under there until he's ready
06:06to pull it out.
06:14George, we're hiring.
06:16Thanks, thanks.
06:18It is time for demo.
06:19We got Joe and his whole crew from Gold Hill Construction here.
06:24These guys, they're hungry.
06:27Yeah.
06:29Floor's out of here.
06:30Base molding's out of here.
06:31We're prying off boards.
06:33We're knocking down walls.
06:35It's like we're gutting the beast.
06:36We're generating a lot of trash during the demo.
06:39So Anthony from Maggio's Dumpster has brought a dumpster for us and we're ready to go.
06:42Hey, Chaz, you ready to kick some butt?
06:44Sure.
06:45All right.
06:45We're going to kick this wall down.
06:47Yeah, she's got to get involved.
06:51That was great.
06:55Okay, so as you can see, it's super tight.
06:58So originally the grandfather had built a wall in the middle of the already small bedroom
07:03and made it into two separate bedrooms.
07:05That made sense back when like little Emmett was born and they had like a baby and then they had
07:10like two toddlers and they wanted to keep the baby and the toddlers separated.
07:14But now it's like, all right, let's bring the boys together.
07:19So there are a couple of, I guess, wrenches in the plan.
07:24I love wrenches.
07:25It's not the largest space.
07:27There's a lot of windows, cutouts.
07:28So that can get really difficult.
07:30Boys room is a real puzzle.
07:32It's going to take some serious ingenuity to figure out how we're going to be able to fit in the
07:36beds and the dressers and everything they're going to need in a bedroom.
07:40One thing is for sure, we have to take down the wall.
07:43What's your weapon of choice?
07:45Oof.
07:46Oh man, I think I'm going to have to go sledge on this one.
07:49Okay.
07:49So basically we're going to take down this wall and we check to make sure that there was nothing structural
07:54holding up the ridge beam in the house, which holds up the roof.
07:56We're going to go ahead and basically just give the room a refresher.
07:59All right, you ready?
08:00Let's do it.
08:05Oh, grandpa building a hell of a wall here.
08:07So as we're doing demo, we're taking out the shelves, taking out the trim and all the molding.
08:12I realized this was the perfect moment to summon the Kool-Aid man.
08:18For all of you who know, you know.
08:21And if you don't, well, let me show you.
08:24Here we go, kids.
08:26I hear somebody's thirsty over there.
08:29Oh yeah!
08:32Oh yeah!
08:34Woohoo!
08:35I've never seen a person run through a wall during demo, but I'm definitely a fan of the Kool-Aid
08:39man.
08:40Oh yeah!
08:45So the plan for the electric, we're going to have Jose from High Speed Electric here.
08:49We're going to have him working on putting in some new outlets, some new lighting, and putting some new circuits
08:54in the panel.
08:54And you're running electric up here, you've got electric running downstairs, you're running all over this house.
08:59We're going to do the base manual.
09:01So during the demo phase, we did run across the mold, and that's something that we take very seriously.
09:06And to eliminate it coming back, Max from Airmaster HVC is going to be installing a ductless mini-split unit
09:12in the basement.
09:13So we have a 12K Daikon mini-split installed.
09:16It's going to do heat, air conditioning, and dehumidification.
09:19So in the basement, if there is any sort of mustiness...
09:22Moisture, mustiness, it's going to remove that.
09:24Take that out.
09:24Easy to maintain, easy to clean, no ductwork, no softening, nothing like that.
09:28This space is going to be so good, I appreciate you being a part of it.
09:34What's up, Meekins family?
09:42As a mom, you can't explain moments like this.
09:45It's an amazing experience, something that they will never ever forget.
09:48Whoa!
09:54Today we have a special adventure for the Meekins family.
09:58George invited us to UBS and said, show up.
10:01We have no idea what we're here for.
10:04What's up, Meekins family?
10:07Huh?
10:09I got some of my buddies here, wanted to greet you.
10:12Welcome to the facility.
10:14Let me tell you, when I told the Islanders, I called up Niles, I talked to Sparky,
10:18and I said, we need to bring this family over to UBS, show them a good time.
10:21They're the biggest Islanders fans I know.
10:23They said, well, they don't talk, but they gave me some hand signals.
10:26And they said, get your butt over here, bring the boys.
10:29You guys ready for a little Zamboni ride?
10:32Woo!
10:33Wow!
10:35Welcome, welcome, Lincoln family.
10:39Have you ever seen your name in lights like that?
10:46All right, guys, I think we've reached our destination.
10:49Right through these doors.
10:53Hey, hey, hey, hey!
10:56What's up, boys?
10:57What's going on?
10:58What's up, Karen?
10:59This is me.
11:00Nice to meet you, bud.
11:01We got you a jersey.
11:02Yeah, I was very surprised.
11:04I didn't think they'd be there.
11:06As a mom, you can't explain moments like this.
11:09It's an amazing experience, something that they will never, ever forget.
11:12Yeah.
11:13Should we put Sorokin's helmet on him?
11:14Yeah.
11:16You want to put Sorokin's helmet on?
11:18We won't tell him.
11:20Let's see, bud.
11:21Let's see that.
11:24You guys want to cut up a couple of sticks and then we'll head up to the shooting pad and
11:28rip some pucks?
11:28You want to play mini hockey?
11:29Yeah!
11:29Yeah?
11:30All right, let's do it.
11:35You want to tape it up?
11:41Highlanders!
11:45Today was such a special day.
11:47You know, sometimes you look at these players on TV and you're like, oh my goodness, but they're real men.
11:53And that's, I think, the biggest piece from them that they'll take away.
12:03Go Islanders!
12:04Hey, I'm George Oliphant, host of George's The Rescue.
12:07With fall here, it's time to change your filters.
12:10You want to change your one-inch filters every three months.
12:13Six to twelve months for your larger filters.
12:15Caring for your home starts with caring for the air inside.
12:18For more info, visit Filtree.com.
12:22Today's design day.
12:23I'm so excited.
12:24I have my whole entire RD team with me, so it's all hands on deck.
12:28All right.
12:29Look at this, huh?
12:30Pretty cool, right?
12:31Meekins boys reunited in one room.
12:34Yes.
12:35And you did a great job.
12:36I mean, the place for the bunk beds, the place for Kieran's bed.
12:39Yeah.
12:40We had different storage options.
12:41The two rooms we were combining were so small.
12:44That was the real challenge.
12:45In order to bring the boys back together, we had to tear down the wall and get rid of the
12:49foyer.
12:50And none of that's possible without Riverhead Building Supply coming in and providing all the necessary materials.
12:55After that, carry insulation and Symphony drywall, they buttoned everything up.
13:00I went with a really light palette when it comes to paint colors just because we have so much color
13:06with the navy and the blues and the oranges.
13:09ABOFS came through and hooked us up with all of our paint supplies and Forza painting came in for the
13:14application.
13:15It's impeccable.
13:16I wanted to do a really nice clean linen fabric for the boys' window treatments in their room.
13:21So, I called my friends over at Homestead Window Treatments.
13:24They came in, they measured, they fabricated, they installed.
13:28All right, boxes and boxes don't fall, guys.
13:31Put one foot in front of the other.
13:33Where does all this stuff go?
13:34Whoa!
13:35This place is...
13:37You like it?
13:39Wild.
13:40Right?
13:41It even comes with an anti-Sherbo.
13:43Holy smokes.
13:44In the basement, the flooring really needed an update and a refresh.
13:48Floor and Decor came through and hooked us up, provided us with the LVP flooring for the basement,
13:52and New York hardwood restoration came in and did the install.
13:55A staircase to a basement can get easily overlooked.
13:58Designers North Carpet and Home came in clutch.
14:01They provided the carpet and the installation for the basement runner.
14:05There's a bunch of stuff to do.
14:06I want to get the ottoman over here, and then I want to start loading up the shelves,
14:12and then we have to move the arcades over.
14:17Just watch out.
14:20Shouldn't be that hard.
14:22Why don't you want to go into your home?
14:25Are you good?
14:27I'm good now.
14:28Are you sure?
14:29That was so unnecessary.
14:30That was unnecessary.
14:32So we had the custom built-ins made by Jimmy over at James Atlas Woodworks.
14:37He did such a fantastic job.
14:38We really wanted to create more space, which is why we pushed that wall back under the stairs.
14:43You have so many things you can do down here now.
14:46It's so functional because you have this whole, like, rec, play area, hangout, lounge.
14:51But Kieran can also do his PT down here because...
14:56Because...
14:59Because...
14:59So we actually split the space, remember?
15:04Right.
15:04Between the stairs.
15:05So this front half of under the stairs is storage.
15:08So we're going to put all of his PT stuff here.
15:11Perfect.
15:11Weights, bands, mat, like all of that.
15:14Right, right.
15:14He actually has a dedicated space now.
15:16Perfect.
15:17To do his PT, which is so awesome.
15:19So awesome.
15:19What do we got going on in here?
15:21Dang!
15:23So when I was space planning for the basement, I really wanted a true rec area for the boys
15:28where they can be a little rambunctious.
15:30I said, why don't we actually just build a wall and create a shooting lane where they
15:35can shoot hoops and do a bunch of different things.
15:37So I kind of wanted to do something in here that kind of reminded everyone of an arcade.
15:43And it has a little bit of nostalgia.
15:46We made sure to paint the inside of here black and then give this effect, which I'm going
15:51to hit with white highlights to really make it pop.
15:54And if you put black lights in here, this will just explode.
15:59We're here.
16:00We've made it to the finish line.
16:01We're really excited for the Meekins family to come in and see the work that we've done here.
16:05It's been great working with Chassidy and her team and George and everybody else on the crew.
16:12I'm so excited for the family to come home.
16:15It really is going to feel like a new house that they can live in.
16:18It really felt great working as a team to put this together for the Meekins family.
16:23One of the things I love most about doing this show is we hear a story like we did about
16:28Kieran and what he's battling, but it's not just about Kieran.
16:31It's about his brothers.
16:31It's about his mother.
16:32It's about the home they live in, the community they're part of.
16:35And being able to come in here and do something for him and his family
16:39that's going to affect them positively for years to come, that's awesome.
16:43That's what it's all about.
16:44That's special.
16:45Wow!
16:46It took my breath away.
16:47It brought tears to my eyes because that is a space for him.
16:50I'm just in a loss of words for what he did for us.
16:54I never knew it was going to look like this.
16:56Are you kidding me?
17:05Hola!
17:06Oh, look it.
17:06The rain stopped.
17:07Just in time.
17:08That's all right.
17:09Come on in anyways.
17:10Come on in anyways.
17:11Rain didn't matter.
17:13Did not at all.
17:13I said earlier, but it could be raining out there.
17:16There's so much sunshine in here that we just wanted to get in here.
17:21Whoa!
17:24Whoa!
17:24Oh my God!
17:31Wow!
17:33Oh my God!
17:35I think it's insane what you guys did with the bedroom and the space that you guys had.
17:40Oh, to see all the basketball stuff in there and that all three of us can now share one bedroom.
17:46Who's on the top?
17:47Who's on the bottom?
17:47Me!
17:48I'm on the top.
17:49There's the stick!
17:51Look at these pictures!
17:53I never knew it was going to look like this.
17:55I thought it was just going to be like a giant room.
17:59Their old bedrooms were tight, cluttered, where now I feel like they're open, it's warm.
18:08The windows, the sunlight, I feel like it's so bright in there.
18:11Kobe!
18:12Oh!
18:13Good shot!
18:14And so it begins, and so it begins.
18:17As the boys get older and grow with this room, they'll be, they're good.
18:22We're good for a very long time.
18:23This is something that, you know, as a mom I've wanted to do, but I had no means to do
18:29it anytime soon, so.
18:30Oh!
18:31Oh, boom!
18:32Never had a dodgeball game break out mid reveal, but hey, I'm up for it.
18:37Me and Emmett one.
18:38Me and George one.
18:39Actually, there's a lot more room in the basement for such things as dodgeball fights.
18:46What?
18:48Whoa!
19:01Oh, my God.
19:03Oh, my gosh.
19:04So, when I walked down the stairs, and I turned to the left, the first thing my eyes saw was
19:10the, um, the bins, and all the physical therapy stuff for Karen, and a space for him to have PT.
19:16We have all of your stuff easily accessible, the mirror, you can check your form.
19:20It took my breath away, it brought tears to my eyes, because that is a space for him that he
19:25can now use.
19:26This space is amazing.
19:28Do you know when he does therapy upstairs, we have to move out the dining room table?
19:31Well, that's why we didn't want you to have to do that anymore.
19:33I didn't even get past that to then see, um, the little basketball alley.
19:41Oh, my gosh!
19:43I didn't even notice their names everywhere!
19:45Oh, yeah!
19:46Roblox.
19:47Mets logo.
19:49PlayStation, lacrosse sticks.
19:51Are you kidding me?
19:52This is mind-boggling to me.
19:55My friends are gonna die.
19:56It's everything and a lot more.
19:58The old basement, it was, it was just dust everywhere.
20:03We couldn't...
20:03Really cramped.
20:04It was cramped.
20:05We couldn't stay down there for long.
20:07And now it's like things that we like.
20:09And all of us were so excited.
20:10Do you guys know what this game is?
20:12NBA Jets!
20:12This game!
20:13Half-man!
20:15It was just one thing after another, taking my breath away.
20:18I was speechless.
20:18I couldn't even talk.
20:21I'm just in a loss for, loss of words for what, what he did for us.
20:27I mean, the things that you guys are able to do with this whole project is just out of this
20:33world.
20:33And I'm so grateful for the opportunities we've had.
20:41I just wanted to say from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
20:45Thank you to everyone for all of your hard work, all of the detail you put into.
20:50To show all three of my boys, you touched on all of them.
20:53You have such a special place in our heart, and you are all forever a part of Kieran's crew.
20:58And I thank you.
20:59I really hope everybody can take away from Kieran is the hard work and the grit that that boy has.
21:06We take for granted every day being able to put on our socks and shoes or walking up the stairs.
21:12Those things are so challenging for Kieran.
21:15I hope this is a day that on the tough days or the tough moments in his life,
21:20you know, when he's frustrated about something he can't do,
21:24he can think of the moments and the feelings today.
21:26And what you guys have done for us, and the joy that you will now bring us.
21:30One, two, three, Kieran's crew!
21:34Woo-hoo!
21:35Hey, Bertie! Good fun!
