00:00What a Sunday at Augusta, and one that it did not seem clear-cut who was going to come out
00:06with the win today.
00:07There were a lot of different challengers in the mix, and I just want to start unpacking the story of
00:11the day with you
00:12because we had Scotty Scheffler, who made this huge surge back yesterday with 65, opens up 200-3, gets to
00:189-under.
00:19Rory three putts for double after missing the green of four. He drops two shots off that lead.
00:24Justin Rose, Birdie's 7, 8, 9, gets to 12-under. When Rory's at 9-under and you're seeing all these
00:31other guys surge,
00:32how do you think this day is going to unfold at that point in time?
00:36Coming off of last year's Masters and how dramatic it was, you felt like there was going to be twists
00:41and turns the entire day,
00:42especially with the amount of players that were in contention. Rory McIlroy, I think after that double bogey at four,
00:48it felt like we were being set up for another crazy day of Sunday, whether Rory was going to be
00:54a part of
00:54the story and win his second green jacket, or whether a Cam Young type was going to make a run,
01:00or Justin Rose, like you had mentioned. But at the beginning of the day, seeing Scotty Scheffler get off
01:04to that amazing start, that birdie at one, that shot he hit, felt like it was going to be a
01:09special day
01:10for Scotty. And then Sam Burns getting into some trouble at two, and I think just trying to wrap your
01:16head around that front nine and the amount of possibilities, it felt like it was almost information
01:23overload. I don't know if you felt the same way, because when Rory made that double bogey,
01:28then your mind starts to go to all these different possibilities of who's going to win the tournament.
01:32And it wasn't until I felt like when Cam Young made the bogey at six, because he looked rock solid
01:41those first five holes, misses a shortish putt at six. But to me, Cam Young kind of opened the door
01:47for Rory. I thought the two-shot swing at seven, especially for that final pairing, was the
01:52biggest moment of that front nine, outside of the three-putt double for Rory. When Cam Young hits
01:59the fairway at seven, that becomes, you know, if you give him 10 golf balls, he's getting it within
02:0510 feet. I would say to that funnel pin, nine out of 10 times. I don't know how many golf
02:13balls it
02:13would take for him to miss the green like he did. This is, that was a inexcusable shot by Cam
02:19in
02:19that moment. I felt that Cam was going to have to show us wedge play down the stretch for him
02:24to win
02:25this tournament. And in a key, key moment at the beginning of the front nine, when he has all the
02:31control and looking for a bounce back birdie, hits it in the front bunker, hits it on the green,
02:36misses a putt for bogey, Rory makes birdie. And that seemed like all of a sudden Rory now is in
02:42the
02:43driver's seat. And then Justin Rose heads the back nine. So that's where I'll kind of leave
02:47just my, my overall initial impressions of the beginning of the day. I think we were all sitting
02:53here watching it. We really felt like, is, is Justin Rose going to, going to get the one he
02:59deserves? I mean, three, three runner-up finishes here. Today's tied for third is, I believe his,
03:05his fifth top five. It is fifth top five in master's history in 21 starts. And a guy that just
03:12seems to
03:12not only know how to play around Augusta national, probably more than most, as we know, experience
03:18being so important around here, but a guy who was informed to start the year, the huge one with the
03:22farmers, you know, is gaining ball speed, even at the age of 45 and feeling like, okay, he's he,
03:28we saw him make a charge back seemingly impervious to pressure. You know, a guy who's been great at
03:35rider cups, but man, aim in corner does him in. I mean, he goes two over and three holes there,
03:41but really gives away three shots because he hits the green and two at 13 and three putts.
03:47But I think all of us were thinking it starts with that approach at 11, where he kind of bails
03:51out, right? Leave himself a really tough up and down that he cannot convert makes bogey there.
03:55And then a duff chip at 12. I mean, I'm not saying that's an easy up and down at 12,
04:00but
04:00to make back-to-back bogeys there. And then you love his tee shot at 13. It's a beautiful approach
04:06on the green. And I mean, to me, it felt like if he is, cause he enters that stretch 12
04:12under
04:12and he can easily emerge 1300 instead of 10 under. And then for someone who is a leaderboard
04:18watcher like Rory, that's something you're thinking about with every single shot you're
04:22hitting. I'm, you know, as we continue to unpack the day, that's the next piece, right?
04:26Like how did he, how did a guy with Justin Rose's sort of competitive profile, not give
04:31this one away, but not convert this one to the position he was on, on 11 T it's the masters
04:37on the Sunday. And Augusta national requires you to hit the shots and, and sometimes executing
04:43on a Sunday is difficult. And Justin Rose was doing such a great job on the front nine, leaving
04:48himself in, in the proper position, starting a day with the chip in at one, but really leaving
04:53it in a perfect spot on nine. And once he made that putt walking over to 10 and smashed
04:58a mini driver over the corner, uh, hits the top of the hill at 11. It's a shot that nobody
05:03was necessarily getting it close that middle left hole location at 11. Uh, you would have
05:07been okay, you know, hitting it out to 40 feet. So the fact that Justin stepped up there
05:12and most of the time when you miss right at 11, the ball comes out shorter cause either
05:17miss hit it or committed to it. So I don't know if he ever had the right club in his
05:22hands.
05:22The fact that it, it scooted on down past to the right of the bunker where that ship,
05:27if you've ever, if I've stood there, it's a very, it's a very, very difficult chip.
05:32A couple of guys got it up and down. There is some room. Rosie actually hit, hit a really
05:36nice one and just missed the pot.
