Tornadoes didn't pop up to the extent that was feared in the Southwest on Oct. 22, but severe storms roaring through the region still have plenty of dangers.
Transcript
00:00I am deep in the heart of the White Mountains of Arizona, known as the Alps of Arizona.
00:05We were chasing some severe worn supercells up here and it is 48 degrees.
00:09They did have some vigorous mesocyclones just to the south of Alpine, Arizona.
00:15We're wondering if there could be flash flood potential out here with some burn scars noted
00:19on some of these higher peaks across Alpine.
00:21Lots of lightning out here.
00:23Severe thunderstorm warnings continue off to the southeast.
00:26The big outflow winds were getting funneled right through the meadow here in Alpine, Arizona
00:31just a little bit ago.
00:32So far today, the tornado threat has not really materialized, even though we've had dozens
00:37of supercell storms across central and eastern Arizona into western New Mexico.
00:41A handful of tornado warnings, the one near Show Low, Arizona, nearly produced as it came
00:47out of the White Mountains, had a very low wall cloud, bull wall cloud that was rotating, may
00:52have produced over the higher terrain.
00:53And in fact, a couple of these storms may have produced tornadoes across the White Mountains,
00:58even though temperatures here are colder at 8,000 feet.
01:01There's a lot of cold air aloft because of the vigorous upper level storm system.
01:05But we are about to pivot to flash flood mode here near Alpine, Arizona, expecting these supercell
01:11storms to dump quite a bit of rainfall as they slam into some of these 8,000, 10,000 foot
01:16peaks
01:16out here and wildfire burn scars evident with the higher terrain.
01:20Certainly could be some debris flows and flash flooding and some big winds with these supercells
01:26and possibly even an isolated tornado or two, high altitude tornado or two to the north of
01:32the White Mountains.
01:33The environment has been a little bit worked over by those storms and the orphan anvils coming
01:37off the north side of the White Mountain.
01:39So instability is a little bit lacking there, but the energy is coming out.
01:43So we expect the severe weather threat to continue here with an isolated tornado through evening.
01:47for a few days a week.
01:47Thank you so much.
01:48Bye.
