00:00He is, of course, the winningest coach in the history of the University
00:04of Miami men's basketball program, and he is our friend.
00:08I don't know if you heard the end of Mike Cugno there.
00:11He was flying with his family, his wife and his child and his in-laws.
00:16He got bumped to first class and didn't tell his wife or family.
00:22He knew a couple days in advance, and they all bordered the plane.
00:27He plopped himself down in 2E while they all walked behind.
00:32And Crowder and I are like, no, you give that to your wife.
00:35You don't take that seat.
00:37And he's like, no, why would I give her my first class seat?
00:43Would you ever do that to Mrs. Laranaga?
00:45Of course not.
00:47I booked my first class seat, and she sits coached by herself.
00:52I don't have to surprise her.
00:55She already knows the rule.
00:57The rule is the people who are tall, who need the leg room, sit first class.
01:04Those who are 5'6 or shorter, go to coach so we can save the money.
01:10You do not play the tall card when it comes to flying.
01:15Do you play the tall card?
01:17Every single time.
01:19I can't believe that because Crowder is tall, and he gives his first class seat to his wife.
01:26Every time, coach.
01:27I'm united some platinum diamond something, and they always upgrade me.
01:31And as soon as we get on, I say, Asia, you got 2A.
01:34I'll go back to 13F.
01:36I do it every single time, coach.
01:38And I'm not no little puppy.
01:39I'm 6'3", 6'4".
01:41Yeah, but I heard you took paternity leaves.
01:45I think you're a whimp.
01:48You're one of those guys that just...
01:51Dying to talk about this.
01:53Oh, man.
01:55You guys are talking about the Marlins.
01:59He missed eight weeks of the radio show.
02:00He missed eight weeks of the radio show.
02:02Oh, my goodness.
02:04To do what?
02:05Did you give birth?
02:07No, no, no, coach.
02:08I went fishing about seven of the eight weeks.
02:12But I was there in case my wife needed me.
02:14Yeah, in case your wife needed you what?
02:17What?
02:18Were you going to breastfeed?
02:19What?
02:21I put the baby in the swing at night, let it swing around, you know, it took 12 hours.
02:27Hey, Hawk, listen to this.
02:29My wife gave birth.
02:31We were 25 years old.
02:32Our son, Jay, was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, when I was an assistant at Davidson.
02:37And her due date was January 25th, and she was a couple of days late.
02:44And her doctor said, listen, if the baby doesn't come by Monday, we're going to induce labor.
02:52So my wife came home from the doctor's appointment.
02:54She told me that.
02:55And I said, well, it can't be Monday.
02:57We play Duke.
03:01So my wife, first of all, she started crying.
03:04Then she called Dr. O'Hunter Jones in Charlotte and said, doctor, I'm so sorry.
03:10My husband says not Monday.
03:12How about Tuesday?
03:13We play Duke on Monday.
03:15And he says, oh, you know what?
03:18That's right.
03:19And I'm going to the game.
03:20Let's just do it after the game.
03:22So I left from the Charlotte Coliseum, took my wife to the hospital.
03:29O'Hunter Jones drove from the game over to the hospital, checked us in, got us all squared away.
03:36And at 830 the next morning, they induced labor, and my son, Jay, was born.
03:42Hey, Coach, we've argued about this on the show.
03:44How involved were you with Jay's birth?
03:47Because I was holding the left leg.
03:49Like, I was down there in the thick of it.
03:51Hawk was up there on the other side of the curve.
03:54Shoulders, man.
03:54I was told by my brother, don't go below the shoulders.
03:57You're going to be scarred for life.
04:00Hey, listen.
04:02I was in the waiting room, and you were waiting.
04:07So that was my first son.
04:09When my second son was born, my first son was born natural.
04:14And my wife was adamant she was going to have our second child natural.
04:18And so I was in the delivery room when our second son, who was 11 pounds, 6 ounces.
04:28Oh, my God.
04:29And my wife delivered him natural.
04:32Oh, my God.
04:33So I'm telling you, she's my hero.
04:37Holy mackerel.
04:3911 pounds, 6 ounces.
04:42That's crazy.
04:43Did you cut the umbilical cord?
04:45No, no, no.
04:46I don't have my medical degree.
04:48I leave that to the professionals.
04:50I was the same way.
04:52I was down there in the thick of it.
04:53You did all that stuff.
04:54I did everything.
04:55I'm a doctor almost now.
04:58Oh, my goodness.
05:00So you basically needed the paternity leave to recover from what you witnessed in the delivery room.
05:07I've told the story, Coach, when they did the afterbirth thing, he had to get me a wet towel to
05:14put on my head.
05:15And so my wife just gave birth, and I'm sitting in the corner with my knees wobbly, and they're putting
05:21towels on my head because I almost passed out.
05:24Wait a minute.
05:24You didn't have your do-rag on?
05:29It was not for me.
05:31You got to get your do-rag, Coach.
05:32It was not for me, man.
05:33So you have really sat in first class while Mrs. Laranaga sits in coach?
05:40Every time.
05:41That is so shocking to me.
05:43You think you know someone.
05:44That is so shocking to me.
05:46But you really, you chalk it up as just, I'm tall, so I need this.
05:50And if I wasn't tall, I wouldn't sit here.
05:52Here's what I would tell you.
05:54How tall are you, Coach?
05:55I'm 6'5".
05:576'5".
05:57Okay.
05:58But go back to when I was an assistant coach, traveling coach everywhere, and I ended up with a bad
06:07back and two hips that needed hip replacement because I can't squeeze into those small places and not put a
06:15lot of pressure on my hips and back.
06:17So when I got a head coaching job and I put it in my contract that I only flew first
06:26class, it was healthy for me because if I flew coach, I couldn't even get up out of the seat.
06:32My back would hurt so bad, my back would hurt so bad, I couldn't straighten up.
06:35So I'm not a wimp.
06:37I'm not.
06:37Well, maybe I'm a little bit of a wimp.
06:39But you've had a very successful career.
06:43You've made a lot of money.
06:44I'm having a tough time believing that Mrs. Laranaga has to fly coach.
06:51She doesn't have to fly coach.
06:52She chooses to save that money.
06:55That's her choice.
06:57That's not mine.
06:58I'm not telling her she's got to fly coach.
07:01She can fly first class anytime she wants.
07:07Or what I would prefer is we lease private and we both fly first class.
07:13Yeah, now you're talking.
07:14Big money.
07:15Now you're talking.
07:15Because you pre-order your meals, you have your dinner and all set before you get on the plane?
07:20Oh, yeah.
07:21No question.
07:22When you fly first class, you've got to travel and do everything first class.
07:27That's right.
07:27That's part of my motto.
07:29First class only.
07:31Hottened up, man.
