An audio Mixed Bag gets taken over by Stephen A. Smith who gets on Jerry Jones for letting Troy Aikman go to the Miami Dolphins!
Transcript
00:00Speaking of show ponies, let's get to the mixed bag.
00:08Familiar with Stephen A. Smith.
00:10Leroy.
00:12Yes, I am.
00:13He is the host of First Take, and he was talking about Troy Aikman on the Miami Dolphins,
00:20and he touched a lot of things here.
00:22On one, he has strange recommendations for other people's front office.
00:27He's mad at Jerry Jones, and then he's hitting former presidents with strays.
00:35This is one of your own if you're Jerry Jones.
00:38Jerry Jones, it's not just his family.
00:41Jerry Jones considers members of the Dallas Cowboys as an extended family.
00:46If that would apply to anybody, it would be Troy Aikman, who is a brilliant football mind.
00:53We are incredibly, incredibly lucky to have him,
00:55and we have to sit up there, and I'm going to say this on national television,
00:58to the bosses at ESPN, we need to cherish the people that we have.
01:03I don't think Dan Olofsky is going to be here too much longer, to be quite honest,
01:07during the years to come, because this man knows his damn football,
01:09and somebody's going to get smart enough to scoop him up.
01:11Somebody is going to come to their damn senses and give Louis Riddick a GM job,
01:16a head of football operations, because damn it, he deserves it.
01:19Somebody is going to scoop up Ryan Clark, who's obviously a brilliant football analyst.
01:25They're going to scoop him up.
01:26We have very elite minds here in the sport of football, right here at this network.
01:32And if you're Jerry Jones, damn, it's one of your own.
01:36When you click on the TV, where do you not see Troy Aikman?
01:40How the hell do you let him go to the Miami Dolphins?
01:44The Miami Dolphins, when you haven't won a Super Bowl championship since 1996,
01:49when Bill Clinton was president, okay?
01:52I mean, damn.
01:53I mean, I understand that we were preoccupied with other things going on with Bill Clinton,
01:57but the bottom line is he was the president of the United States.
02:00It was January 28, 1996.
02:07That's a lot of things to get into a take on that.
02:11But is he comparing Dan Orlovsky's contributions to ESPN,
02:19to Troy Aikman winning three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys?
02:23Yes.
02:24I think he was talking about more or less recognizing what they have to offer at football,
02:36and why would somebody else offer that opportunity to Troy Aikman
02:43and not the guy that considers him family?
02:48But Dan Orlovsky in the same sentence as Troy Aikman?
02:51We're in an end zone.
02:53We're just about football.
02:54He didn't say about their careers, about their knowledge of football.
03:01You can separate the two.
03:02Let me ask you a question.
03:03What?
03:04Just be honest with me.
03:05Not at all.
03:09How fired up would I be?
03:11How fired up?
03:11If you heard of the offseason.
03:13Dan Orlovsky.
03:14That the Miami Dolphins didn't hire Troy Aikman.
03:16That Dan Orlovsky was their consultant.
03:21It's a weird thing.
03:26Because outside, excuse me, outside of football,
03:31they do the same thing.
03:32In fact, Dan Orlovsky does it more than the weekly game that Troy Aikman does.
03:41So I would say he does more work at it than Aikman because he does it every day.
03:51That being said, not at all.
03:54Me neither.
03:56But that's our fault.
04:00You understand that, right?
04:01I don't think it is our fault.
04:02It's our fault because you're going with the big name, which is what has gotten this organization in trouble.
04:07I don't know.
04:09I'm just telling you.
04:11Like, here.
04:12They say this in sports all the time.
04:15Being a great player doesn't make you a great coach or a great football guy.
04:19But also being good at television doesn't mean you can run an organization either.
04:22Correct.
04:22I feel like he just was like, all the guys I do TV with can run an organization.
04:25Let me take it one step farther.
04:30I am not calling Stephen A if I'm an owner to ask him who I should hire as my GM.
04:37But I don't think that that's what his point was.
04:38No, his point was just the knowledge that they have of the sport.
04:43And why wouldn't Jerry Jones take advantage of that?
04:47And he has somebody close to him who he says is close.
04:51That was the whole picture.
04:52He went way around the world.
04:54I think it's pretty odd, but here's the reason.
04:56Like, the obvious reason is that Stephen Ross is looking for guidance in football.
05:02Jerry Jones doesn't want guidance in football.
05:05Correct.
05:05He wants to make the decisions.
05:06Correct.
05:07It's not like.
05:08Correct.
05:08It's not this.
05:09But you should hear.
05:12I think Stephen A is saying that Troy Aikman should have been a part of the Dallas Cowboy
05:24organization in some capacity, even if Jerry Jones wasn't going to listen to a damn word
05:29he had to say.
05:31You see what I mean?
05:32He should be around that organization.
05:34How can somebody like Troy Aikman end up in a different organization who he did not play
05:44a game for?
05:45Because that guy respects what he has to offer more than a guy that you won three championships
05:51for.
05:52Yeah, but I think this is one of those things.
05:54Like, this was the same thing when Boomer Sideson was like, oh, why don't the Dolphins
05:56lean on Dan Marino?
05:57It's like, because Dan Marino doesn't want that job.
05:59But there's a difference in not one.
06:01Dan Marino's still always around.
06:03Yeah, he's around, but he likes it.
06:05Troy Aikman's never around with the Cowboys.
06:08Big star.
06:10Voice of online football.
06:11Again.
06:11And now?
06:12If, if, listen.
06:13He's the Dolphins.
06:14Here's how that works.
06:17I'll make myself locally.
06:20I'll make myself.
06:22Yeah, you play for the Cowboys.
06:24No, I'll say, yeah.
06:26I'll make myself the owner.
06:30Yep.
06:31Okay.
06:32And, and Dan Marino says, um, the Saints have called me.
06:41I'm friends with somebody in the front office.
06:43They want me to go there.
06:44I would say, absolutely not.
06:46You belong here.
06:48This is your, your, your, your dolphin.
06:51Yeah.
06:51I think that's what Stephen A was saying.
06:55Like, whether you want to make all the decisions or not, a person like Troy Aikman, when you talk about
07:04any contributions he makes in a front office or to a team, you would assume it should be with the
07:10Dallas Cowboys.
07:11That's what he's saying.
07:13And then he kind of went off and talk about all the other smart people that he worked with.
07:16And then he reminded us all how horny Bill Clinton was.
07:20And he said, Jerry Jones hasn't won a championship since Bill Clinton was the, yes.
07:24Yeah.
