00:00tobin out doing his uh dirty boxing today getting some some pananigans behind the scenes i believe
00:10uh he should be he's probably so sad from watching the heat get their ass kicked oh my goodness i
00:16can't tell if he was more sad from the heat but listen the marlins have been out of it for
00:21quite
00:21some time they're starting to build something worth watching now so he's invested and now that
00:27we're officially the home of the marlins you have never met a more insufferable human being than
00:34tobin the marlins fan every single game keep in mind baseball is his first look every single game
00:43we get nine to 15 messages banishing people to other countries telling people they're going to
00:53jupiter uh i i can't tell you look the the text messages that came in yesterday and understandably
01:00so because the uh vlad you were you were doing the game the the reds uh put up two in
01:06the top of the
01:07ninth three or four in the top of the tenth and it was another game yet again that the marlins
01:12were
01:12winning and they let it slip dude this game was moving along quickly i think sandy's about to throw
01:21another you know what we've had two pretty good like there's been a lot of good starts wasted with
01:27the marlins early in the season i mean it's the game before it was a two nothing game it's still
01:34early
01:34right no i know it's early but i'm just saying to this point to this point but sandy was sandy
01:39now the
01:41interesting thing was we because you guys talked to remember clayton mcculler before the season and
01:48tobin asked uh asked uh skip a no sandy's a very um proud individual proud pitcher and everything
01:57when you want to pull him and he doesn't want to go how do those conversations go so the whole
02:04time
02:05and we have a great commentating crew uh broadcast group with jack mccullum and um and um so he was
02:11going and he was saying man this guy could pitch a complete back-to-back maddox so the back-to
02:16-back
02:17maddox i'm like what's a maddox right maddox is when you throw less than 100 pitches and pitch a
02:22complete game so we're thinking this is happening and dude every inning was like dang dang this guy's
02:29not gonna get to 100 at all it was he was still within reach or it was still you still
02:36understand
02:37why he was going out there but it's early in the season it's like his third fourth start is his
02:42third
02:42start do you really want your ace to be going nine innings like that but it's sandy so they show
02:51it i
02:52don't know if you i don't know i don't know if you guys watch the game but they showed a
02:54clip
02:54of clayton mcculler sandy went down after the eighth inning um after the one two three he went down it
03:01uh no i think he got the three outs it wasn't a one two three inning after he got the
03:04third out
03:05he goes down the steps and you see clayton mcculler uh following him right oh boy so i i count
03:11the
03:11steps right you just go one two three and then all of a sudden you see clayton mcculler right back
03:21up
03:21the steps it was the quickest he did a michael jackson spin so i don't know what sandy told him
03:26but it was just like and then he just did it just you just saw clayton mcculler you saw the
03:31back of
03:31clayton mcculler and then also you saw his face back again it was like damn all right and then you
03:36saw sandy come back for the night get the hell out of my face that's what he said and that
03:41was some of
03:42the questions that were being asked um after the game but listen he's just he's the best pitcher right
03:47now in baseball he's your best pitcher he's your best player i understand him going out there
03:53but once he did give up and you saw a couple of runners yeah get him out it's you don't
03:57need to
03:58waste his arm the guy did come back from tommy john surgery just a couple years ago so you don't
04:03want to overuse his arm but it was interesting it was very interesting now the marlins started off
04:10the season five and one since then they have lost four out of the last five well it's early we're
04:17only
04:17one game behind it's early but but you gotta what did they say you got a soft soft start
04:26yeah wasn't uh wasn't necessarily the strongest start but that didn't stop this uh this rockies
04:33outfielder from talking crap about the marlins did you guys see this yesterday yeah we heard it we
04:39listened to it yesterday but what are what are we what are we doing here you know the marlins finally
04:44got some culture people trying to bring us down you know we're we're finally one game behind it seems
04:50like we're competing i'm getting annoying texts from tobin uh you know we got we got some some
04:55solid pieces to work around and now this guy chooses to trash us i feel like we're building a
05:00culture down here
05:03minding we're six and five so you know maybe i'm getting a little ahead of myself
05:09yeah it's 11 games so i'm not losing a whole bunch of sleep and
05:14we're not going into you know emergency mode already i i just think one of the things that
05:23is positive for me is is if i can look at every single game
05:32and pick moments out of the game where if this gets better
05:39they have a good chance of winning these things can improve over during the course of a year
05:45and including the decisions made by both players and manager right uh next time we get in that
05:53situation let's try doing it this way let's you know these are the the ebbs and flows of the season
05:59trying to figure these things out as far as what your players can do in these different situations
06:05um the one thing that i'll i'll say is um i would like to see better hitting
06:18um that being said even with the hitting that they've had they've had some opportunities and and i
06:25don't know if how good and vlad you i don't know how to ask this question but how good
06:35do you have to be to disregard your best players to go lefty righty either in the batter's box
06:44or pitching you understand what i'm saying i think sometimes teams try to go lefty righty
06:52and you take your best players out and i would say like i don't know if you're good enough to
06:58have that much depth you got to play your best players right
07:05they like to use the book they love analytics yeah but but you might not be deep enough to use
07:10the book you know what i'm saying like i'm not saying that these guys are erin judge or you know
07:19guys
07:19who no matter what they're in the lineup but i'm saying that at this point in time
07:28your best players got to be on the field because you don't have the depth as a lot of these
07:33other
07:33teams and whether it's lefty righty or or whatever to take a guy who's hitting the ball well out
07:42to go by the book you're saying to me that the guy i'm putting in has got a chance for
07:51more success
07:51not just going lefty right and i would say if my guy hitting hitting the snot out of the ball
07:57i'm
07:57leaving him in i don't care if it's a lefty or right i mean usually you're gonna leave a guy
08:02who's
08:03if he's sitting well he's sitting well but you might look at the numbers against that particular
08:07pitcher and if he hasn't had a good average and hasn't had good success against that pitcher
08:13then you're gonna do the lefty righty how long does that last that lasts until that hitter proves
08:19that he can be successful against that pitcher but he can't he can't prove it if you're always
08:24taking him up leave it remember this is baseball all you got to do is 10 times your right back
08:29get
08:30three hits right that's what i'm saying why are we making the changes like when if you
08:37i mean as much as i you know rip analytics but if you have the numbers that okay look
08:42every time so and so goes against um all right put it this way this and this happened back in
08:50the
08:50days right if you're a great left-handed hitter and randy johnson's pitching and every your numbers
08:58against randy johnson is like three for 21 that great left-handed pit batter got a day off
09:04right he's got a day off right even though he's one of the best players on the team
09:12could hit for power probably hit for average if he has if the numbers show he's not successful
09:18against that pitcher he's not going against that pitcher that's that's just been baseball
09:23forever i know i know it's been baseball but but
09:28i and and i think of it like this
09:34my best players need to be on the field i get that but if your best player is not capable
09:41of
09:41being successful against that first particular player or pitcher and the person that i put who's
09:48if he's a left-handed pitcher and i have my best players a left-handed hitter that and he his
09:55numbers
09:55are bad against that particular pitcher they're gonna go by the book i i know and and you know
10:03the numbers say it works i get it you put your best out there all the time in order for
10:08you to win
10:10but you know that's why they're the managers and we're you know no i i i know i'm not and
10:15and again i
10:16i i understand why they do it and i think this is maybe you know the conversations we had before
10:24this is maybe my background in sports that says your best players give you the best chance to win
10:37period and and and and that's how whenever i look at other sports i always critique it start near
10:45wait if this guy is is playing this way at this moment in time why don't we ride him
10:53you know what i mean why don't we you know put him in and give him you know a chance
11:01to keep cooking
11:01so i like and and and and i get it i'm i'm never gonna be the one to be over
11:09critical about it
11:11because again like you said that's why we comment that's why we you know but he's the manager
11:19but it it also seems like in a situation where you are you know one-handed dominant
11:31you know so for example they don't really i don't really think they have a whole bunch of left-handed
11:36pitching um like should you should this plan
11:46be dealt with better going into the season if you know you're going to use the analytics
11:53look back in my day you should drink a bottle of hoots chew tobacco when you clock out of public
12:00what bottle of hooch chew some tobacco you clock out of your grocery store
12:05yeah
12:07bottle of hooch
12:08your clock out of your job as a mechanic and you go play baseball like a real man
12:14a bottle
12:15oh yeah
12:18he's talking about prohibition
12:20like he
12:22right
12:23yeah and then you do one of these
12:26before you
12:28hey dr toboggan
12:30there right
12:33but yeah so so like i i get it you know i you know it it and vlad you know
12:41what it bothers me in
12:42football too
12:43right
12:44because if your if your team
12:47has been
12:48oh for four on fourth and ones because you can't move the line of scrimmage
12:53then why the hell are you going for it on fourth and one talking about the book says go for
12:57it
12:58like what part of
12:59you know
13:01what you know about your team which you're supposed to know more than anybody
13:06and what part of analytics
13:08do you disregard because you know your team
13:12and and that's why i kind of say that about baseball when you know
13:17this guy is my best hitter i don't care what the success rate against that pitcher is
13:24there's nobody else you have that's going to do a better job than him
13:30and so what part of that
13:33comes into play
13:34you know what i mean it's like
13:38taking sandy out
13:39versus putting a closer in
13:42if you know 80 percent of sandy
13:45is better than 100 percent of your closer coming in
13:48then a lot of cases and a lot of managers will say
13:52i'm gonna try to
13:53get my starter to finish this
13:56because our bullpen is terrible
13:58but right
14:00but right you know last point before we go to break
14:02but how much you got to put somebody's eat you got to put your ego to the side
14:06sometimes
14:07right right
14:07that wasn't but i understand
14:09i understand i i think
14:13if they had fairbanks fairbanks who's you know who's on paternity leave
14:16uh you know he just had a child
14:18i think fairbanks was there i think
14:20he would have just had fairbanks close
14:22and i think maybe sandy would have understood because
14:25that's the closer
14:26but i can understand who sandy's like no i'm pitching great
14:30and we our bullpen is
14:32doesn't have their closer we don't have our closer let me close this i'm the ace of the team
14:36right but once you give up a couple of batters
14:39yeah i can understand you taking them out
14:41you don't want to waste his arm
14:42remember this is still april
14:44we're still april
14:46you know what i mean
14:47right
14:48oh yeah
14:49i don't know man
14:50these guys are soft
14:51back in my day paternity leave
14:53we'd had the baby in the dugout
14:55we'd drink our bottle of hooch
14:57we'd go
14:59before we got to the plate
15:00and we'd swing at everything
15:02why do you why what are you
15:04tom hanks here
15:05always the words would never stand for this
15:09what do you
15:11what do you
15:11what do you
