00:36Okay, so I have been trying to get Mr. Ralph Bowers on this show for a minute
00:42We did an entire interview and it didn't even record
00:45We're gonna go ahead and do this again
00:48Because as me being the person that I am
00:50We have got to get his book on this show
00:53Okay, he himself has to be on this show
00:58We have a storytelling time that we have to tell
01:03And I need you guys to pay attention
01:05I want to thank you guys so much for tuning in
01:06This is Yaya Diamond and we are in on Dream Chasers Radio
01:10And we have our guest, Mr. Bowers
01:12He is here today
01:13Thank you so much for joining us
01:15Thank you for having me, Yaya
01:17I can hear you
01:19I have a voice
01:22So tell me, you know, how
01:23And I don't even have a mic stand for this
01:25Because we just rigged this whole thing
01:27We just rigged it, okay
01:29How did you know you were gonna write this book?
01:33That's a really good question
01:35Probably at about 16 years of age
01:39I realized that I wasn't a fiction person
01:42That my life could be a fiction or a biography
01:45But that poetry was very condensed
01:50And just a vehicle that I felt could express my heart
01:55And that was when I decided, 16
02:00That I was gonna be a poet
02:04How long did it take you to actually publish this then?
02:08Oh
02:09So, I published this last year
02:12Wow
02:13So, really quite some time
02:16And I wouldn't have published it, actually
02:18But my daughter continually encouraged me
02:23And she brought some of her friends over one day
02:26And one of them's name is A.D. Tell
02:27She's a noted individual in the music industry
02:31And she said, Mr. Bowers, these are really pretty good
02:34You should offer them to the world
02:36And I said, well, maybe I'll
02:39Oh my gosh, wow
02:41You know, being a poet
02:43Going into things
02:44And the book
02:46The book
02:46I have to show people the book
02:48So, consorting the muse
02:51In her upstairs office
02:53Tell me about this title
02:57The muse of poetry
02:59Is that when I studied Joseph Campbell
03:02There was a vehicle
03:03There was a way
03:04There was a ladder
03:05To arrive at an audience
03:06With the muse
03:07That the ancients had used
03:09And so I utilized that myself
03:13Then I had the consorting the muse
03:15I had that
03:16I figured that was good
03:17So I started a little bit of writing
03:20Then one day I was taking a young man
03:22To a therapy session
03:23In Asheville, North Carolina
03:26And we were going up some steps
03:29And I said, consorting the muse
03:31In her upstairs office
03:33This is perfect
03:35And that's what I titled it
03:37Before I ever wrote it
03:38So it's interesting that the title came first
03:40Because in my experience
03:41In my poem
03:43My titles always come
03:45The last line of the poem
03:46And then I turned that into the title
03:48And then I wrote the poem
03:50But anyway
03:51Wow
03:51I mean, you have just like
03:53This decisive thing
03:54That this is what I'm going to do
03:55You know
03:56Absolutely
03:56Sometimes it takes a while
03:58For us to understand
03:59What we're supposed to do
04:00And it takes a minute
04:01For us to get it
04:02But why love?
04:04I mean, why did you write about love?
04:06Why was love on your mind
04:08At such a young age?
04:10When I was reborn at 27 years of age
04:12I went back to school
04:14Linden State College in Vermont
04:16Magnificent facility
04:18With magnificent educators
04:23I gave myself to God
04:28And was reborn
04:30And no, Yahya
04:31After five years
04:32My feet didn't touch the ground
04:34And then one day
04:34He put me back on my feet
04:36After five years
04:36And I almost died
04:38I thought
04:38You've got to be kidding me
04:39He said
04:40Son, you have this
04:41You've got this now
04:43And so
04:45I forget what you're pressing on
04:47Yahya
04:47I'm so sorry
04:47It's okay
04:48Why love?
04:49Yeah
04:50Why love?
04:51Oh yeah
04:51Okay, so
04:52Getting back to that
04:53So my father said to me
04:54Because at Linden State College
04:55I did really, really well
04:57Had an opportunity
04:58To go to Harvard
04:59Full scholarship
05:01I wasn't able to take that
05:03Because of family obligations
05:05So my father said to me
05:07Son, what will you teach?
05:09And I had to think about it
05:29Taken with the notion
05:30To love you with the sweetest
05:31Of devotion
05:31It came to me
05:33At 27 years of age
05:34That every love song
05:36That human beings
05:37Sang to one another
05:38Was originally sang
05:40By God
05:41To human beings
05:42So any love that we share
05:44Is God's love
05:46And so
05:47It's perfect
05:48Because it's not my love
05:50It's a love that
05:51He can give me to share
05:52And if I'm
05:54If I go about it
05:55The right way
05:55The results that God
06:03Wow
06:04Wow
06:04You know
06:05I was just
06:06I was
06:06Going over everything
06:07And the sexuality
06:09As well
06:10I mean
06:11What about sexuality?
06:13I mean
06:13You know
06:13You're saying
06:14That
06:14Well let me say
06:15Let me say this
06:16About it
06:16Okay
06:16I want to talk about that
06:17You know
06:19God's love
06:19Is love
06:21And I would imagine
06:22That it's not sexual
06:24Although with Mary
06:25It was
06:27Because a child
06:28Was produced from it
06:29But for me
06:31On the moral side
06:33Of things
06:34Sexuality
06:35Is probably
06:35One of the greatest gifts
06:36That God gave mankind
06:37Because of the emotional
06:39And psychological effects
06:41Positive effects
06:43That it can pass
06:44To the human being
06:44It also could be
06:45Terribly misused
06:46Oh yeah
06:47So for me
06:49Spiritually
06:52The man woman thing
06:54Is really
06:56It's God
06:59Coming to me
07:00Coming to her
07:01Because I'm a heterosexual
07:02And then we share
07:03God's love with one another
07:05And so for me
07:06As a poet
07:09Writing
07:09Is a mystical experience
07:11And so I went to
07:13St. John of the Cross
07:14He's the Doctor of Love
07:15Actually
07:15That's what the church
07:16Titled him
07:17And read his works
07:19For six years
07:21Day and night
07:22Flep with them
07:23Woke up with them
07:24Memorized them
07:25And allowed myself
07:27To be deeply affected
07:28By all of the works
07:29On Christian classics
07:31Eat the real library
07:33Those are the writings
07:34Of the saints
07:35And the church fathers
07:36And so
07:37Obviously Aquinas
07:38And Augustine
07:38Are real important to me
07:40But also
07:42Aristotle and Plato
07:43So what I did
07:45As an older man
07:48As a younger man
07:49I studied the Bible
07:50Intently
07:51As an older man
07:52I started looking
07:53At Greek mythology
07:54Because we're
07:55The western culture
07:56And the Greeks
07:59They subsumed
08:00The Judaic
08:03Teachings
08:03And then there was
08:04The New Testament
08:05And then the Arabians
08:09Translated
08:09Greek and Christian works
08:12Into their culture
08:13And they called them
08:14Medicines
08:15Medicines for the soul
08:17Yeah
08:17So Ralph Bowers
08:18Was a completely
08:19Broken man
08:20My sister disappeared
08:22When I was 13
08:23I woke up at 16
08:26Devastated
08:27Knowing I wanted
08:28To be a poet
08:29Knowing I wanted
08:30To write about
08:31That experience
08:31Knowing that I wanted
08:32To be healed
08:33From that experience
08:35And along with God
08:37Poetry
08:39Has provided the order
08:41In the chaos
08:42Of my life
08:43So that I could make
08:44Some meaningful
08:47Existence
08:47That I would be proud of
08:49And that's what
08:50I've achieved
08:51And a lot of that
08:52Was vocationally
08:53Through my work
08:54As a sexual abuse
08:55Investigator
08:56With the Department
08:56Of Social Services
08:58So for me
09:00I needed to
09:02Be something
09:03In this world
09:05For God
09:05What he wanted me
09:07To be
09:08And I had no idea
09:09What that was
09:09So I had to give
09:10My free will over
09:11So I gave my free will
09:13Over to God
09:13And that was the
09:14Beginning
09:15Of the rest of my life
09:17Wow
09:17Which has been
09:18Magnificent
09:19In my opinion
09:20So the sexuality
09:21Peace
09:23I do have one poem
09:25Called Kneading
09:25That is pretty
09:27It's pretty straightforward
09:30I enjoy sexuality
09:32I try not to be
09:33Pornographic
09:34In my poetry
09:35About it
09:35There's an
09:38Ecstasy
09:38That we arrive at
09:41Physically
09:41And mentally
09:42Through our sexuality
09:44So it can be
09:45A divine sexuality
09:46So I believe
09:48That my works
09:49Are very respectful
09:51But they do
09:53Engage
09:54The muse
09:55In
09:56Sexual activity
09:57Now in the
09:59Olden times
09:59A muse
10:01Would not dare
10:02A writer
10:03Would not dare
10:04Cross that
10:05Bridge
10:05Look at the muse
10:06Because she would
10:07She would play
10:09But I kind of just
10:10I kind of just
10:11Went a little
10:12Licensed with that
10:13So I hope the world
10:14Will forgive me
10:16I read the most
10:17Recent
10:19Pulitzer Prize winner
10:20I read his poetry
10:21Very very good
10:22Didn't really notice
10:23Any sexuality in it
10:24I'm a poet
10:25Who has not
10:26Been
10:27Out in the
10:28MFA world
10:29I've just been
10:30In my home
10:31Taking care of
10:31My children
10:32Doing my work
10:33And writing
10:34My poetry
10:35For healing
10:37And so I will
10:38Say that
10:39There is
10:41Sexuality
10:42And references
10:43To sexuality
10:44In the book
10:45But I in no way
10:46Intended to be
10:46Intensive at all
10:47Right
10:48I mean
10:49That's life
10:49Though
10:49Right
10:50I mean
10:51You and me
10:52Are sitting here
10:53Because of sexuality
10:56Yes ma'am
10:57And our children
10:58And it can be divine
10:59It can be absolutely
11:00Glorious
11:01And it can be horrible
11:02And you know
11:02And so I myself
11:03Am the victim
11:04I and my sister
11:05Was the victim
11:07One of the reasons
11:08Why I became
11:08A sexual abuse
11:09Investigator
11:10And so I wanted
11:11To portray
11:12A sexuality
11:12That I felt
11:13With a healthy
11:14Sexuality
11:15Right
11:15And that was
11:16What I intended
11:17To do
11:17Right
11:17And that's important
11:19Because you know
11:20I too was a victim
11:21And more than once
11:23And you know
11:24It's sad
11:26But you know
11:27It can be
11:29It can be displayed
11:30In the wrong
11:32Manner
11:33And it should be
11:35Out of the context
11:36Like you said
11:37Of love
11:37Love for one another
11:40And then you produce
11:41This child
11:42This offspring
11:44That is out of the love
11:45That you have
11:46For one another
11:47And that in itself
11:48Is beautiful
11:49Any other way
11:50Eh
11:51Well no
11:52It's not
11:53And I understand
11:54Gotta be consensual
11:55Yeah definitely
11:55Gotta be consensual
11:56Definitely
11:56Consensual
11:58Yeah definitely
11:59Definitely
11:59And you know
12:00I absolutely love
12:01What you've done
12:02With the book
12:03And the website
12:04And everything
12:05You know
12:06Tell me
12:06Tell me how
12:08You were changed
12:10By your own
12:12Recognition of your book
12:15But not only that
12:17Actually publishing it
12:19And what did it do for you
12:21I will say this
12:23It's a self-publish
12:25Okay
12:26And I paid my whole way
12:29To this point
12:31My dream
12:33Would be that
12:35An editor would say to me
12:37My god Ralph
12:38This is pretty good stuff
12:39You know
12:40Why don't we
12:41Give you a stipend
12:43And you know
12:43All that sort of stuff
12:44You know
12:44I don't need it
12:45But that
12:46That's typically
12:47What you read about
12:48Maybe
12:49But maybe I'm the underdog
12:50Maybe I'm the guy
12:51That comes out of nowhere
12:52And oh my goodness
12:53This guy gave his life
12:54To poetry
12:55It's obvious
12:56That poetry
12:57Is in him
12:58It's a spirit
12:59That surrounded him
13:01And used him
13:02To provide something
13:04In the world
13:05That will be meaningful
13:07For people
13:07I'd like to be able
13:09To talk to people
13:10About the poetry
13:11About the sexuality
13:12About family dynamics
13:14You know
13:15Those sorts of things
13:16So maybe
13:17Eventually
13:17I'll have my own podcast
13:18I think maybe
13:19That is what
13:20The publisher
13:21And I are working
13:21For
13:22And I'll look
13:24And study
13:24Other poets
13:25Formats
13:26And create one
13:27That I think
13:28Would be meaningful
13:29And helpful
13:30But let's understand
13:31I have a degree
13:32In psychology
13:33I've worked
13:34My whole life
13:35In the human services
13:36Field
13:36Helping families
13:39My whole bench
13:40Is on wellness
13:41Of being
13:41Collectively
13:43And individually
13:44And the individual wellness
13:47Is not easily
13:48Arrived out
13:48In this world
13:49But there are tools
13:50And there are keys
13:51For me
13:51Carl Jung
13:53The marital
13:54Syzygy
13:55Coming to wholeness
13:57As an individual
13:58Marrying the male
14:00And female
14:00Aspects
14:01Of the self
14:02This is the work
14:04That I did
14:05This is the work
14:06That the poetry
14:07Is emblematic
14:08Of
14:08I've also written
14:09A few
14:10Religious songs
14:11That are kind of
14:13Like hymns
14:14Which I was
14:15A little bit
14:15Surprised about
14:17And then
14:17I've written
14:18Some really
14:19Beautiful things
14:21About God
14:22And I wrote
14:23Some of them
14:24As a feminine
14:26Personality
14:27And I wrote
14:28Some of them
14:28As a masculine
14:29Personality
14:29So in the book
14:30You'll read
14:30Poems
14:32That you would
14:33Believe are written
14:33By a woman
14:34Because just like
14:35George Sands
14:36I decided
14:37That I was
14:37Going to utilize
14:38That in writing
14:40That I would write
14:40Both as a male
14:41And a female
14:42And I think
14:43I've done it
14:44Relatively successfully
14:45I hope
14:46You know
14:47It's beautiful
14:48That you can actually
14:50Have that relationship
14:51With yourself
14:52And with the most
14:52High creator
14:53That you understand
14:54That you do have
14:55A male and a feminine
14:56Side
14:56Because how do you
14:58Relate to a female
14:59If you don't
14:59Understand a female
15:02And also in the
15:03Jewish mysticism
15:04Yeah
15:04God is both male
15:06And female
15:06He's got a left
15:07And right hand side
15:08And so there are
15:08Attributes
15:09So it's all attributable
15:10Yeah
15:11So that's why
15:11The Dow Day James
15:13Is another book
15:15That looks at the
15:16Male and female
15:16Aspect of energy
15:17Of reality
15:18Of life itself
15:19Of which we are a part
15:21Well I mean
15:22Nature itself
15:23A lot of studies
15:25Yeah
15:25Nature itself lends
15:27That you know
15:27We are all male
15:29And female
15:29If we are created
15:30In the image
15:31And likeness
15:31Of the most
15:32High creator
15:32Then where does
15:34A female come from
15:36Wow
15:37I mean
15:38If he
15:38If he is a he
15:39Then where is a she
15:42Yeah
15:42God is dual
15:43I think
15:44Yeah
15:45I think
15:46We created
15:48I think it says
15:48In Genesis
15:49Yeah it does
15:50It does
15:51And that's the thing
15:53That I think
15:53A lot of people miss
15:54Is that
15:55Oh
15:55So if
15:56If it's just a he
15:57Then
15:59Where do I come from
16:01It's that whole
16:02Patriarchalization
16:03That happened
16:04Yeah
16:04In the Greek
16:05There was another
16:06Reason why
16:07I wanted to go back
16:07To the Greek
16:08And study the Greek
16:09And study the female
16:10So that she would be
16:11Even more prominent
16:13In my works
16:14Than any male
16:15And I appreciate
16:16Yeah I appreciate that
16:18We as females
16:20Get overlooked a lot
16:21I hope
16:22You know
16:23For my sister
16:24I wrote this for my sister
16:25I would have given
16:26Every one of these
16:27Fomes to her
16:27But I couldn't
16:28My grandfather
16:29Was a postman
16:30So he delivered
16:31Nail
16:32Rain, shine
16:33You name it
16:33So if there was a way
16:35To have delivered these
16:35To my sister
16:36I would have done it
16:37But every woman
16:39Is my sister
16:40If she chooses to be
16:41And I choose
16:42For that to be
16:42So I have written
16:43This for a long time
16:44Thank you
16:45And I hope
16:45I hope it's appreciable
16:47I hope it's not an insult
16:48I hope I didn't make
16:49A mistake
16:49I hope I wasn't blind
16:50In doing this
16:51Now I
16:52I'm speaking for myself
16:53I'm not speaking
16:54For all women out there
16:56But I love love stories
16:57That are written
16:58Or love poetry
16:59That is written by a male
17:00To understand
17:02And to
17:03And to help me
17:04To understand
17:05Where the men
17:06Are coming from
17:07But it's even
17:08More intimate
17:09When a man
17:10Understands where
17:11I'm coming from
17:12I think that's sexy
17:14I don't know
17:16I don't know
17:17I'm not going there
17:18I'm not going into the
17:19But I think
17:20That that is appealing
17:22It's sexy
17:23It's honorable
17:25And it makes me feel
17:27Like as if
17:27I've been heard
17:28So glad we've had
17:29This conversation
17:30Yeah
17:30And I think that
17:32If anyone
17:32Would take away
17:34Or a female
17:34Would take away
17:35From this
17:36I think that
17:37They would feel
17:38Like as if
17:38They've been heard
17:39And also
17:40Empathize with you
17:41On the loss
17:42Of your sister
17:42Because you said
17:44You could have given
17:44You would have given
17:45All of these poems
17:47And it would have
17:48Never probably
17:48Been cheered with us
17:49And Abby would have
17:50Never written them
17:51Exactly
17:53Exactly
17:53And so
17:54Unfortunately
17:55You know
17:56I'm sorry
17:57About your sister
17:58Beauty out of tragedy
17:59I mean
18:00But yeah
18:00Exactly
18:01Well we can do
18:02We have to continue
18:03On and we have
18:04To be victorious
18:04That's it
18:05That's it
18:06And that's what
18:07I've tried to achieve
18:07Victory
18:08Wow
18:09Well Ralph
18:09Man I tell you
18:10The book is beautiful
18:12Let me go ahead
18:13And put it up here
18:14Again
18:15Consorting the muse
18:16In her upstairs office
18:19Mr. Barras
18:20Is there anything
18:20That we've missed
18:21Today that you'd like
18:22To say to the listeners
18:24I'm sure that there is
18:25And I'm hoping
18:26That in time
18:27They'll be able
18:28To hear me
18:28Until they say
18:29Turn Ralph off
18:32Well I don't think so
18:33Are you doing
18:34Another book by any chance
18:36Actually
18:36Thank you so much
18:38My second book
18:39Is a proofreader
18:40I've got about
18:41Four or five poems
18:42In it that I'm going
18:42To pull out
18:43And put some
18:44Other ones in
18:45I've been reading
18:46Plath lately
18:47And of course
18:47She's had her laundry
18:49All over
18:50And we've all
18:50Talked about it
18:51And I just want
18:52To be careful
18:53About my laundry
18:55And I'm glad
18:56We were able
18:56To redo this
18:57Because I think
18:57I said some things
18:58Last time
18:59That I would rather
19:01Be guarded
19:02In my personal life
19:03But I can only tell
19:04The readers
19:05That in terms
19:06Of tragedy
19:07I know it
19:08Real well
19:08In terms of joy
19:10I know it
19:10Real well
19:11And I like
19:12I like the joy
19:13Better
19:13And my brother
19:15Always accuses me
19:16You know how
19:17Writers oftentimes
19:18They'll do
19:18They'll do
19:19Like dark and light
19:20Hurtful and helpful
19:22I took the dark
19:24And the hurtful
19:24Sound in most
19:25Of my poems
19:25And just made
19:26Them healthy
19:27And he said
19:27Oh my god
19:28There's no tension
19:28I said
19:29Does there have to be
19:30Right
19:31I love it
19:31Let's just go one way
19:33I absolutely love it
19:34Well Mr. Bowers
19:35Thank you so much
19:36Thank you
19:37And my gosh
19:38It's just been
19:39Such a pleasure
19:39Having you on the show
19:40And I can hear you
19:44So let's hope
19:45That everybody else can
19:47And if at the sound
19:47Of the voice
19:48You want to say
19:49Something about
19:49Your poetry
19:50Or if you want
19:51To ask a question
19:52Or if you just
19:53Want to compliment him
19:54Or give him
19:54Your condolences
19:55Whatever the case
19:56If you do
19:56Whatever you want
19:57To do
