01:24We're talking about Auburn with Liz Lenton today, she has a new album out

01:28and I'm so very excited to have her on the show, thank you so much for joining us

01:33Hi Yaya, it's great to be here, thank you for having me

01:37It's great to have you, thank you so much for being here with me today

01:42Okay, so listen, we've got to go back in time

01:46Maybe I should point that way

01:48That way, that way

01:52We're going to go back in time and talk about when you got the bug

01:55I mean, when did music hit you?

01:58Because music today doesn't really make a lot of money

02:00but it does make a lot of joy

02:03Yeah, it does make...

02:04Well, I started literally as a small kid

02:07I was five and I begged my dad to show me how to play the guitar

02:11He was, you know, he was not a great player but he could punch out a chord on anything

02:16And I made him teach me

02:17And it started about then

02:20I just started writing stupid songs, songs about my toys and songs about my family

02:26And songs about whatever was outside the window and all sorts of stuff like that

02:31And it just kind of carried... yeah, that's me

02:35It just kind of carried on from there

02:37But being an indie artist, obviously you do everything

02:41You do absolutely everything

02:43So this album is kind of about being chief cook, bottle washer, cleaner, star

02:50You know, the whole show

02:52That's why you're like on every different aspect here

02:56Yeah, that's me

02:58Somebody said to me that it showed that I had multiple personalities

03:04Which I guess you have to have in this business

03:06Yeah, you know, you can't be normal

03:09Oh my god, no

03:11You can't be normal in this business

03:13You cannot be normal in this business

03:14You have got to be virtual

03:17You've got to be... yeah, weird

03:20You've got to be... you've got to be... you've got to be... absolutely everything, haven't you?

03:25Definitely, definitely

03:26So, I mean, okay, so is this your first album?

03:30Or is this like a collection of different songs?

03:33Or how did you get this one?

03:35It's not my first album

03:37This is the first album that I've kind of done

03:39Where I've been involved with the recording and the production

03:42Previously I've recorded albums in Nashville

03:45With the wonderful Tom Jutz and his team

03:47But with lockdown I started working on stuff

03:50Sort of on my own

03:52And I did a course

03:54Sound engineering course

03:55Which I was absolutely dreadful at at first

03:58But I'm getting a bit better at it

04:00It really was like

04:02Oh my god, this sounds absolutely awful

04:04It looks horrible

04:05But I'm going to get in there slowly but surely

04:09Oh my gosh

04:10And it was also a collaboration with 32 other independent artists

04:14Because it was... you know, it started... the work started in lockdown

04:19And then afterwards started doing stuff online and sending stuff to and fro

04:24And it just ended up as this massive collaborative, you know, wonderful project

04:33That I wouldn't have missed for the world actually

04:36Although I've never done anything like that before

04:38You know, done it like that before

04:39Yeah

04:40It was... it was fantastic

04:43That sounds amazing

04:44You know, it's so much fun to work with other people

04:46You know, you have such... you... you... you... I mean, you have talent

04:50Don't... don't get me wrong

04:51Everybody has a talent, right?

04:52But when you combine it with someone else's talent

04:55It becomes even better

04:56I agree

04:56And then you got the third person

04:58If you can get along

05:00I agree

05:00If you can get along with the third person

05:02That would be good

05:04There's some personality clashes

05:06Because you have so many different personalities in music

05:09Just like you would have in any workplace

05:11You know, it's different

05:13And you have to try and get along with people

05:15But the creativity that everyone brings is just amazing

05:18What was it like to work with other people?

05:21But in... in retrospect to work with yourself

05:24Just by yourself

05:26I... I much prefer working with other people

05:29I kind of... I bore myself if that makes sense

05:32You know, I feel... I feel like I'm coming out with the same old crap all the time

05:37So I absolutely love working with other people

05:39I've always been a collaborator

05:42But I've always been much more at the helm

05:44So for me to be working with so many different people

05:47That would just have so... so many different ideas

05:50And I have to say

05:52Hats off bow down to the mastering engineer

05:55That somehow managed to put stuff that was recorded in about 10 different studios

06:00With 10 different producers and 30 different musicians

06:05To... I don't know

06:06I kind of gave him this pile of stuff

06:08And went, make that all sound like it's all meant to be together

06:12So it just goes to show, doesn't it?

06:14You know, there's so many different skills

06:15And there's so many different ideas

06:17And so many different ears

06:19Everybody hears everything differently

06:21So that was... I think that was one of the biggest challenges

06:26Just stepping back and letting other people hear things

06:29How they heard them

06:30You know, if you're asking someone to do the job and produce

06:33You've got to be prepared to keep your mouth shut

06:35Yeah, you better

06:36You better

06:39It is hard

06:40It is definitely hard

06:41The best thing for you to do

06:43If you're going to be doing that

06:44Is just to leave

06:45Yeah, I know, I know

06:47I always say

06:49I see my songs as babies

06:51And it's like

06:52Once you've given birth to them, that's fine

06:55But during the birth

06:56During the birth

06:57You just need everybody on the same page

06:59Oh, yeah

07:01Oh, yes

07:02Oh, yes

07:03What is your theme?

07:06I know it's Auburn and behind the scenes

07:08But what is the general theme of the entire thing?

07:12What was your focus?

07:14If you could pull it together

07:15The focus on the album was about

07:18It was very much about communication

07:23And, you know, just about different life stages, lifestyles

07:27You know, I think lockdown

07:28I certainly felt

07:30I don't know

07:31There's a lot of musicians

07:32We all kind of went

07:33Oh, we've got a month off

07:34Which is what we thought at first

07:35I'm going to write four albums

07:37And blah, blah, blah

07:38And like everybody else

07:39I just got this awful sort of depression

07:42I suppose

07:43You know, during lockdown

07:45I wasn't anywhere near as productive as I had fooled myself I was going to be

07:50And I felt really shut off from everybody

07:54And disconnected and insular

07:57And for me, it was about reconnection

08:01The whole album was about reconnecting with everybody

08:05With the whole world, really

08:07But, you know, certainly with other musicians

08:10And then it was all about reconnection

08:13I had just felt so isolated

08:16Yeah, I know how you feel

08:18Can you believe

08:18I was on an interview yesterday

08:20Okay, we're going to feel really old

08:23I was on an interview yesterday

08:25And the girl said

08:26Yeah, and during COVID

08:28I think I was in like the fourth grade

08:32Stop it!

08:33I said, so what?

08:34You're in a what?

08:36She goes, yeah, because, you know, I'm 18

08:38So that was six years ago

08:41No, I mean, you're scared

08:43I don't, seriously

08:47I said, no!

08:50I know, I hate it when people do that

08:52It's like when people talk about the 90s

08:54As though they were 80s ago

08:55The 1900s?

08:57Oh, yeah

08:581900s, yeah

08:59Well, I know

09:00Back in the olden days

09:02Olden days

09:03I'm like, please don't do that to me

09:08I felt so old

09:10I was like, huh?

09:14What?

09:16It's been that long?

09:18It's so weird

09:19Because I was

09:19I ran a youth choir

09:21And during COVID

09:22We obviously couldn't get together

09:24So we joined up every week

09:27We would join up online

09:28But because of the lag and everything

09:30And I couldn't afford all the fancy schmancy

09:33Sort of software that didn't lag

09:35So basically we would do our choir sessions on Zoom

09:38But everybody had to be muted because of the lag

09:41Yeah

09:41So I would play the guitar

09:43And then they'd all be singing

09:44But so many of the parents told me

09:47That it was so lovely to hear their kids just singing away

09:49At the top of the boys in their bedrooms

09:52And it, you know

09:53And it was just so difficult to kind of

09:56To connect to people, wasn't it?

09:58Oh my gosh

09:59Can you believe it?

10:00That the 18 year olds

10:02During that time are now 24?

10:06I know

10:07I know

10:08I have quite a few of them around me

10:09And it's scary

10:11This young lady was 12

10:13When we had lockdown

10:15At the end of lockdown

10:16What?

10:17Oh my god

10:19She was 12

10:22I mean

10:24And I'm still recovering

10:26Yeah

10:27I know

10:27And it's so weird

10:29Because doesn't it feel like just a year or two ago?

10:31It does

10:32It does

10:34It's so strange

10:35It's so strange

10:36It's so strange

10:36But I mean, you know

10:37It's so funny too

10:38Because a lot of people

10:40Are still writing about that time of lockdown

10:43When we were isolated

10:45And all we had was our families or ourselves

10:47And a lot of people didn't even have family

10:50You know

10:51There was a lot of people that were sick with cancer back then

10:54That passed away because they got COVID

10:56Yeah

10:57There was just a lot of stuff going on

10:59And for you to still be writing about that

11:02Just shows me that we're not over this yet

11:05No

11:06This is nowhere near gone

11:08I feel in a way that this album has done that for me

11:12And it's got it all out

11:13Yeah

11:13But certainly for the first few years after COVID

11:16That was all about

11:18In fact, I feel slightly exercised now

11:20Because I feel like I've said as much as I can possibly say about it

11:25And you know

11:27And I feel now that I can move on to new stuff

11:29I'm looking forward

11:30You know, the next album is going to be pretty much a live album

11:33With my live band in the UK

11:35And much more rock and roll and just get up and do it

11:40Because I think I've done too much thinking now

11:43I hear you

11:44I hear you

11:45You know

11:45I have been wanting to get back to the UK

11:47To perform for so long

11:49It's just been

11:50It's been very hard

11:51And then when I did have the UK on my sites in October

11:56They told me that I would have to have extra security and insurance

11:59And this and that

12:00And I was like

12:01I can't do it

12:03It's

12:03I do work with other artists from the States

12:06And I have a few people coming over this year

12:09American artists

12:10I'm so excited

12:12Yeah

12:13I would love to

12:15It's a big step

12:17Well, please talk to me

12:18Yes

12:19Absolutely

12:20Don't go anywhere

12:27But it's like

12:32It's essential

12:32But there's so much stupidity

12:39Going on in the States

12:40It's affecting

12:42Everyone's travel

12:43Even though we

12:44As an American people

12:46I would say the majority of the American people

12:48Don't like what's going on right now

12:50I don't

12:51Nobody I know

12:53Everybody I know

12:54Hates it

12:55Yeah

12:55I know

12:56Liberal musicians

12:57Who are

12:58You know

12:59Have a heart

12:59And have a soul

13:00And care about people

13:02We do not like what's going on right now

13:04And you know

13:05There's a lot of stuff going on

13:06I live in a bubble

13:07Where this is not really affecting us too much

13:10Yeah

13:11There are certain things that are going on everywhere

13:14But for the majority

13:16I think we are sheltered over here

13:18Where I live

13:19But

13:21It's just sad

13:22To see this

13:23And I'm definitely going to vote

13:26And get some people out of office

13:28Yeah

13:29I love it

13:30That's why everybody

13:31I mean my lovely lovely producer
