00:43I am being very good. I'm being very good. I have to be very good. Right, Dean? I have to
00:50be very good. We all have to try to be very good. I'm trying.
00:53But in the meantime, and I am trying to be very good, I have an amazing guest on the show
00:58today. My name is Yaya Diamond. I am the host and founder of Junior Chasers Radio. And my guest, his
01:03name is Dean. Dean, thank you so much, Mr. Bates, for being here.
01:08Right. I live an adventuresome life and you're now part of it.
01:14I know. Isn't that cool? Oh, my gosh. That is so cool. Oh, my gosh.
01:19So, Dean, you have a book. I'm going to go ahead and put this out because I love this. A
01:24Life Well Lived by Dean Bates, right?
01:28Right.
01:29Air Force pilot, extended sailing enthusiast. Come on, Dean. You have lived it and you're still living it.
01:39Tell me. Tell me about this life and why did you write this book?
01:44Well, I lived a life with my high school sweetheart for 64 years.
01:56And I lost her 10 years ago. And at that time, I had started writing a book that described the
02:09adventures that I've been through, starting with Air Force pilot and where the Lord has been a part of my
02:17life all my life.
02:19And so, that provoked the book that you have here, Life Well Lived. And I've been an Air Force pilot
02:35and a sailor for 40 years. And I've just been enthusiastic in all of my living.
02:44That is amazing.
02:45I had started the book when my wife was still around. But she's been gone a long time. I had
02:58started it, but then I needed to finish it.
03:01And so, I finished that book. And from there on, I wrote a book called Tell Me About the Holy
03:13Spirit. Because all Christians know the Father and they know the Son.
03:19But they don't understand how to live the Holy Spirit. And so, those two books have been scammed by five
03:32different scammers without any revenue coming to me.
03:39And so, I could keep writing anyway. Because I just have a lot to say about what the Lord has
03:49done in my life.
03:50And so, it's just been an appreciation also with my next book. And that is, I think that this world
04:05is in a crisis.
04:07This world doesn't know how to develop a loving, long-lasting relationship.
04:16And so, I've written a book intended to help to introduce each other as a couple and develop a loving
04:32relationship that is every bit as worthy as what we have had.
04:40And so, all that has fit into an adventuresome life of flying, the sailing, and traveling, and you name it.
04:57And that's what I've been involved in. I'm not done yet. I drive everywhere.
05:04This summer, this summer, I drove to Ohio, which is where I go, to a family farm, house, it's all
05:15available to me as myself, where I can concentrate on my writing and all.
05:24So, what's still going on, my dear?
05:29You are just something else there, Dean. I'm telling you what.
05:34Now, Dean, I know the world is thinking, any girlfriends, Dean?
05:40No, unfortunately. And I would have been willing.
05:44But after 64 years, it would be hard to find one anyway.
05:50And I only do what the Lord leads me to do.
05:54And it just hasn't been in His agenda.
05:58I hear you. I hear you.
06:00Well, Dean, you just never know. These things just might pop up.
06:03You got some more adventure.
06:07Because the first thing that I encourage in developing a loving, lasting relationship
06:16is for the man to hug his wife every morning, scratch her back, tell her you love her, and mean
06:30it.
06:30And when you do that every day, days add up to weeks, and add up to months, and add up
06:40to years.
06:41And the first thing you know, you two could have a long-lasting relationship.
06:46And it really isn't that easy.
06:50Dean, we need you for some relationship advice up in here.
06:57This is beautiful, though, Dean.
06:59I mean, you have done so much.
07:01Being an Air Force pilot, being, you know, sailing and enthusiastic in your living,
07:07and your relationship with your wife.
07:09You know, I mean, there's not many people that can say that these days.
07:13You know, when you think back on your life, especially since you started writing the book
07:18before she moved on, you know, what was the one thing that she liked about this book so far?
07:25Well, she loved to be loved.
07:29And I had done that for so many years.
07:35And she was encouraging, because this is exactly what people need, and it's not difficult.
07:45So, but that relationship plus the fact that you're really serving the Lord at the same time,
08:02that it really makes for an enthusiastic life.
08:08Yeah, yeah.
08:10You know, Dean, you openly recognize the guidance of the Most High Creator throughout your journey.
08:17Can you share an experience where you clearly saw his help, even if you did not recognize it immediately?
08:23Oh, yes, without a doubt, starting with the fact that I got introduced to my wife-to-be at the
08:39farm
08:39while I was shoveling corn with the pigs.
08:43Now, how much more exciting is that?
08:49Wow, wow.
08:52Shoveling corn with the pigs, and you met your wife.
08:55Yes, right.
08:56Oh, my gosh.
08:57Yeah, I don't think that can be more exciting.
09:00Now, the final illustration of my life for her was the fact that we took our sailboat.
09:11It's only a 28-footer, but it was enough to live on, and we went together for the fifth trip
09:25to the Bahamas, and that was seven weeks just putzing around the Bahamas and back to Florida.
09:36And then we said, hey, this is so much fun.
09:40Why don't we head north?
09:42And so we arranged the next year to sail up the East Coast in a coastal waterway from Florida
09:55all the way up three months through the Chesapeake, through New York Harbor, past the Statue of Liberty
10:07and up the Hudson River to Albany, New York, or the boat over the winter.
10:18And the next year, another three months through the Erie Canal up the St. Lawrence River, a thousand islands.
10:29Actually, there was 1,800 islands, but up through a waterway, a 24-mile waterway with 24 locks up and
10:47down.
10:48Wow.
10:49And then sailed from there up to northern Michigan, which was the end of our second summer.
11:00And fortunately, we did because two more summers we sailed up there, and then I lost her.
11:11And so that ended that adventure.
11:17Wow.
11:18I mean, but you had so many amazing years together, you know, and challenges and just love.
11:27I mean, I could tell that you loved her.
11:29Right.
11:31Yeah.
11:32I loved her as much the last day as I did the first.
11:39It was truly a love affair, bored in heaven, I should consider.
11:48Wow.
11:50You know, your book, okay, just a life well lived.
11:58It doesn't even come close to what you've described to me.
12:04I think it's the life extraordinarily lived.
12:11I think that's beautiful.
12:13You can't tell everything, you know.
12:15You can't tell everything.
12:19Adventure as a pilot, let me tell you.
12:22I flew for three years as an instructor in the United States, and at that point was the beginning of
12:35jets, single-engine jets.
12:37And so we, any place that they had jet fuel, I could fly into, and as students, they all had
12:49the opportunity of one weekend to go wherever they wanted to go.
12:55And so I tried to get to as many airports as I could get to, and then three years in
13:07Germany, I was assigned there when the Berlin, when the Iron Curtain started to be built.
13:19Oh, my gosh.
13:21And so for the next three years, the Russians did all they could to encourage us to stray across the
13:33border and shoot us down.
13:36And that went on, and that went on for the next two and a half years, and the Pentagon finally
13:45said, this has got to stop.
13:48And so nobody can fly until we check you out.
13:55That went on the last six months of my career over there.
14:01And all of this is in the book?
14:04Oh, it's in the book.
14:07Yeah.
14:09So go ahead.
14:11Go ahead.
14:11Tell me more.
14:12Tell me more.
14:12I'm just, I'm enamored.
14:14Tell me more.
14:17Well, it was then, what do I do when I get out of the Air Force?
14:25And that's when I bought the sailboat and took my family for sailing, weekends.
14:35And I did that intentionally because they were becoming teenagers.
14:44And I wanted them to have so much fun that they didn't want to go with their friends to go
14:51hang out and get in trouble.
14:53Yeah.
14:54And that really worked.
14:56It did.
14:57That's good, though.
14:58That's good.
14:59Wow.
15:00Yeah.
15:00Dean, you, man, come on, man.
15:03You, you was the man.
15:04You was, you was slick.
15:06You were like, yeah, baby.
15:07I like that.
15:08You had, you had God on your side.
15:12You had the help of the Most High Creator.
15:14You had the family, the wife, and you were smooth, Dean.
15:19You were smooth.
15:20You got some, you got some suggestions here for some of these men that don't understand how to love and
15:26hug and, and just preserve their, their marriage, their lives.
15:30Tell me something more.
15:32You just, you got me, Dean.
15:33You got me.
15:36Oh, well, I can't, I haven't gotten in the podcast yet.
15:41This is my very first one.
15:43Well, you're doing good, Dean.
15:45I'm telling you, you're doing good.
15:46You're making a name for yourself already, but I, I'm not done yet.
15:52You know, I'm still writing books.
15:55I have two more books that are in, in the process, uh, and, um, and, and that is, um, the,
16:09uh, yeah, well, so much for that thought.
16:18That's okay, Dean.
16:20But I, I plan on next spring, um, um, taking a trip all the way to California and driving all
16:33the way.
16:34Oh, wow.
16:35The purpose of it is to visit all of my family and all of my friends one more time.
16:45I got you, Dean.
16:47I got you.
16:48Would you have any encouraging words for someone who might be going through or someone who might need advice?
16:53I would say, forget, forget going through, Dean.
16:55You need to get encouragement to some of these men who don't know how to treat their women's.
17:00Okay.
17:00You need to go ahead, Dean, cause you smooth, man.
17:03You smooth.
17:04I'm telling you, I love it already.
17:05Keep talking.
17:07Well, actually I do have a lot, not a lot to say because it's really fairly simple.
17:15That is the day you met your eventual wife was the day that you would remember the relationship that you
17:31had.
17:31And the goal should be, as a husband now, I don't expect that out of the wife, but expect that
17:43you give her a relationship that she knows that she's loved every day.
17:51And that relationship adds up to years and you will be rewarded for it.
18:02Let me tell you.
18:04And so it makes for a thrilling life.
18:09And it isn't because of money.
18:14It's because of desire.
18:17Wow.
18:19Wow.
18:19Well, Dean.
18:20It's all about love.
18:22Yes.
18:24Dean, Dean, Dean.

21:02When my wife died, the collection of people that wanted to contribute money did so for water
21:13purification systems.
21:14And I had two of them and I went to my, my good friend who has a ministry in Cuba
21:24at the time.
21:26And so we went down there as a group and, and installed a dozen of them all at, at, at
21:37different churches.
21:40And at every church we would go in, there was always a group of women with Americans in their
21:48little church and intimidated and so I would, you know, in our sharing time, I said, the reason I was
21:58there is because I lost my wife.
22:01And so the thing I miss the most is, are my hugs.
22:07And therefore, before you leave, I want a hug from every one of you.
22:13And that, uh, made instant friendships and I don't even have to know the language.
22:25That's right.
22:26That's right.
22:27You don't.
22:27And I estimated that I got 600 hugs during that trip.
22:34Wow.

22:40Well, you're going to have to keep doing that.
