00:15this is my daughter you want to introduce yourself hi i'm jessica thielman his oldest daughter

01:08am uh the host and founder of dream chasers radio we've been airing since 2006 it's been 20 years

01:14i'm leaving it's 20 years 20 years 20 great years great years now i'm not going to say long but

01:21i am

01:22going to say great because i have amazing people on the show between the authors that come on here

01:27the celebrities that come on here the movie stars at this for that the other everything and i am so

01:34honored to be a part of their their careers at the moment that they come on this show can you

01:39imagine

01:39being a part of someone's career you know i may not be like the instrumental part but i am a

01:45part and i

01:46can claim that and that's why we're here today to mentor people to to inspire people to go after their

01:52dreams and their goals and that's why my next guest is here he's going to inspire you not only to

01:57go

01:57after your dreams and your goals but to live beyond tragedies well what you may consider a tragedy can be

02:05somebody else's i don't know experience um incredible mysteries or um i don't know just incredible

02:15things that happen you know what i mean and the miracles and and we're going to be talking about

02:20that today because i think that this next legendary captain our golden retriever is the miracle that no

02:28one expected i want to welcome the guests to the show today thank you so much randy hall and his

02:33daughter

02:33what's your first name again jessica jessica jessica thank you guys so much for coming and thank you for

02:40being on the show thank you thank you yeah yeah we're grateful to be here thank you for that nice

02:47introduction oh thank you exciting uh stories there see that's what i was talking about like

02:53a golden retriever i mean come on come on a miracle that had been sent to you in a dog

03:00okay i need to go

03:02back for a second we need to go back and jessica you're not helen no so helen is the

03:10author with along with randy um she's not able to be here so keep her in your prayers but she's

03:17the other author as well i'm his daughter okay i got you i got you well that's okay that's all

03:23right

03:23you know we're going through all things you know she's going through she'll be back she's going to

03:27be back that's good that's good thing so we will definitely keep her in our prayers here at

03:32dream chasers radio so okay so somebody needs to explain this book to me a golden retriever

03:37the legendary captain our golden retriever somebody tell me what's going on okay well we're going to

03:42tell you all about this great story please full of uh laughter tears miracles and uh you'll see why

03:50in a minute so you know captain wasn't just a remarkable dog uh something really special uh he was

03:59a it was it's more it's also about the relationship with the family experiencing 17 incredible years

04:08and he he was there for us he was our support at times he was our listener communicator he showed

04:18unconditional love during some major accidents and tragedies in our family and he he was kind of the

04:25glue almost that held our family together for those 17 years and we were so blessed with him in fact

04:34let me just uh to explain this better let me just have my daughter jessica so grateful she could be

04:41here

04:42with my wife being under the weather and she'll read just the very first paragraph in the book

04:49that that gives you an idea and prepares you for what's ahead awesome go right ahead

04:56every now and again a soul comes into this world and goes quietly through life teaching those around

05:02him about love living and loyalty without expecting anything in return he unknowingly leaves his

05:10eternal mark on the lives of those who knew and loved him for the past 17 years i have had

05:15the

05:15opportunity to know one such soul in our golden retriever captain and that's uh my wife um wrote that

05:23part she wrote parts of the most of the book and then i wrote parts of it as well about

05:29the airplane

05:29crash and uh the epilogue so airplane crash yeah airplane crash what on the way to mexico in our

05:38friend's private plane we crashed in the mountains but we're gonna get to that yaya just be patient

05:44oh goodness okay okay go ahead go ahead first of all can a dog really have nine lives

05:52um captain did captain our golden retriever i don't know how he got into so much trouble i don't know

05:59how he got hit by cars not once but several times i don't know how he got you know attacked

06:06by wild

06:07animals but he did and he lived through it all and i think part of the reason he lived was

06:13to be there

06:14for this family um we had have six children uh jessica the oldest her younger sister and then four

06:22boys and we needed someone like captain to get us through some hard times now uh when i say nine

06:30lives i'm serious uh early on um when we lived we lived in california for about eight or for about

06:3810 years and then we moved to the mountains in utah and we'll talk more about that but uh he

06:44comes

06:44trotting up the hill and we're near the ocean uh and we didn't recognize him somebody said that's a

06:53strange dog he had this huge head you know double the size of a normal dog and as he got

07:00closer we

07:01could tell by the color and the way he looked at us the way he ran up to us it

07:04was captain he had been

07:06bitten by a rattlesnake and his head swole up huge like a giant basketball and uh you know we rushed

07:13him to the vet and the vet gave him the right shots and in a day or two he's back

07:18to being the normal

07:18captain another thing that happened to him when we we'd moved to utah we lived at the foot of some

07:24beautiful mountains by park city utah um there was a 12 000 feet peak right behind our house that the

07:31kids romped in and skied in and my kids are all you know skiers and rock climbers and mountain bikers

07:38so

07:38it was a great place for us to play but also for captain and he spent a lot of time

07:44in those mountains

07:44and his adventures and one time he came back and my wife thought to herself i've never realized he had

07:53such long whiskers and he comes trotting into the yard but he was kind of yelping in pain and he

08:01had

08:01tried to eat a porcupine i knew it and he had whiskers all over his head or long porcupine quills

08:12oh man he

08:13got him down his throat and all over his mouth and tongue and uh he was in so much pain

08:21so helen my

08:23wife and a couple of the kids held him down and i grabbed a pair of pliers and started pulling

08:29them

08:29out but they were hard to get out and i couldn't even get a lot of them and i thought

08:33you know this

08:34is pretty serious this dog could die on us and so we rushed him to the vet and the vet

08:40kept him there

08:41overnight and he put him to sleep right away and was able to pull out all the quills oh my

08:46god another

08:47adventure oh my god he um another time he was shot twice by an old neighbor he we had moved

08:57and he

08:58would go up to see his friends he had dog other dog friends at our last place and he loved

09:04it there so

09:05he would go up there to go visit his other buddies and one of the times on his return we

09:10found

09:10him laying on my gymnastics mat and he he was bleeding profusely uh luckily the vet was able to

09:18save him but he'd been shot twice in the stomach and ribs um and again he barely made through that

09:25one

09:26but we needed him where he was it wasn't his time to go yet the family still needed him oh

09:32my gosh i need

09:33a dog like that yeah oh my gosh do you have a dog yes i do i have three dogs

09:41oh my gosh what kind of

09:43dog so i have two um terrier mixes um and uh mumu is maybe seven or eight years old but

09:55tiger thinks that

09:56he is like the two year old of the bunch but he is literally 11 years old he is he's

10:03a brindle

10:04pit oh wow we love brindle cooks yeah they don't live past nine they usually he's 11 i think um

10:16and on um

10:18on this will be his 12th birthday coming up on labor day he was born on labor day that's awesome

10:24congratulations for him thank you so i cook for them i cook regular food for them oh my gosh so

10:31they

10:31eat they eat chicken and rice and hamburgers well you obviously love love your dogs oh i do and i

10:42do

10:42cooking for them and taking care of them the way you do and and you're blessed with all those years

10:47and and oh yeah their life has maybe been extended for a reason just like i think golden papers normally

10:53live maybe 14 15 years at the very most and captain stayed with us for 17 years yeah even with

11:01a tumor in

11:02his back leg and that there's a reason for that we'll explain it in just a minute but you know

11:07i can just

11:07say to your listeners yeah yeah that uh boy if they want a book and i know we should over

11:14advertise

11:15this thing but my gosh we're there you know i've had friends tell me randy why didn't you tell me

11:21it

11:21was a page turner you kept me up all night so don't start the book too late at night and

11:27um you know i mean

11:29if you love great stories and miracles and funny stuff uh you'll love this book so um i guess the

11:38next

11:39thing that uh we need to talk about is his uh companion okay living right in the mountains at

11:486 000 feet and there was one barn between us and a 12 000 foot mountain that had full-time

11:55glacier

11:55my kids would take the snowmobiles and ski down now uh so he would romp in those mountains and

12:03just just have a great time but we bought our our kids two cute little ducklings for easter right

12:12uh like a lot of parents do and and but and i had no idea they would get huge like

12:18on the cover of the book

12:19you know i mean like three feet long and tall and uh but one of the ducks just took the

12:28captain hung

12:29out with him would come up and peck him in the cheeks and uh started sleeping with him in his

12:35dog

12:35house started eating his dog food and captain kind of fell in love with his duck and that's where the

12:42duck lived in the dog house and it's what saved her life a number of times she did lay eggs

12:48and they

12:49would boast it on the eggs if you can believe that oh my gosh can you believe that and uh

12:54the other

12:55duck of course got eaten by we had foxes raccoons were the ones that would always eat the rabbits and

13:02other animals and they're they're pretty mean little critters those are they are we had three of them

13:07born in our garage but um and then we even had a mountain lion in one of our trees huge

13:14waist high

13:15oh but uh and so we had other animals too and but this duck survived a number of years because

13:23he was

13:24protected but cap captain wouldn't let any animal near his the name of the duck was anka which is

13:31duck in swedish i spent time there so what happened was we we just thought it was cute and fun

13:38them

13:38chasing around the yard and having a great time and having such a wonderful companionship

13:44and uh they but after a few years the snow gets really deep would get two to three feet deep

13:50it was hard for the duck to wade through things and the snow and to get around and the ducks

13:58spent quite

13:58a time on our porch and we just thought you know maybe it's time for him to give this duck

14:04a nice

14:04home there was a cute little lake up the canyon and so one day we took the kids and we

14:09took him up there

14:11i thought he would love it with all the other ducks but they were a lot smaller regular mallards and

14:17ducks and so on but he panicked he did not like those other ducks and he read the car was

14:23parked

14:23you know 50 hundred yards away he ran back and was quacking like crazy and captain was in the car

14:29and

14:29he knew he was about ready to lose his best friend his companion for life and we had to drive

14:36away

14:36with that duck chasing us okay but it gets better so a few days leave the duck there did you

14:44we did

14:45aren't we awful i know terrible dad yeah but it gets the story gets better so my wife was at

14:55a

14:55women's organization meeting that she was involved with and the the subject was leadership and these

15:01women were all talking about leadership and two different women said you know we had a cute duck

15:11very large come bouncing into our yard with his head up held high proud as could be went straight to

15:19the

15:19dog food had lunch had a drink and then took off like you know she was done and then another

15:26neighbor

15:27said well the same thing happened here comes this duck is dignified and proud as could be just strut

15:33into our yard did her thing you know ate some dog food and walked around and left well way helen

15:41my wife

15:42figured was that one duck one of one of the homes was maybe a third of the way to our

15:49house and the

15:51other home was half the way so and that duck was coming home yeah that this duck was making its

15:57way

15:58back to his lover you know her lover captain her best friend let's say best friend and yeah and so

16:08uh

16:08my wife said doggone we're gonna go get this stuck she grabbed my um daughter that was only about 10

16:15i think

16:15at the time uh jessica's sister marianne about 10 and grabbed captain and said we're

16:20going duck hunting and so they drove up to where the last sighting was and it wasn't long and captain

16:28was barking and helen was yelling and my daughter was yelling it's a lot like long before you know

16:33captain barked really loud you know he had a deep voice and soon we heard it they heard a quack

16:39quack

16:40and you know they followed the noise and captain leaked out of the car and our duck charged towards

16:48captain it was like you know in the in the movies in advertisements two romantic partners come

16:54together after having not seen each other for a long time so pretty dramatic and so needless to say

17:00they rode back together to our house we had you know very large yard couple acres and horses and stuff

17:07so it was a really fun place to live and um is there anything else about the duck we need

17:14to say before

17:14we move on um no just that it was a really precious companionship relationship between those two

17:23protecting both protected each other and it taught us a lot about unconditional love

17:29and it's just amazing what a a bond they had captain knew he had to protect her and keep her

17:37warm at night

17:38you know they would curl up together and that cutest thing so our winters were really harsh

17:44snow was deep and the duck wanted to be outside and so wow okay now you were wondering

17:54yeah yeah about uh our airplane crash so you know a number of years went by and captain um was

18:04getting

18:04older and uh the doctor noted that and he had he had uh you know been hit by a truck

18:14and we can talk

18:15about that in a minute if we have time uh teach some teenagers served out of the way do you

18:20want

18:20to just mention that real quick oh he was he was ran over um and his back legs were smashed

18:27and he was

18:28paralyzed uh we took him to the vet and they you know there wasn't a lot of hope for him

18:34making it

18:35they said this was on a friday they said come back on monday but he's paralyzed and you know we

18:40don't

18:40know if he'll make it just not much help or chance and they showed up on monday and the vet

18:47said he

18:48hasn't moved all weekend he hasn't he's just been still late there the entire weekend we haven't had any

18:54success with them and as soon as he saw my family he jumped up and ran over all excited to

19:00see them

19:00and pulled one of his miracles oh my god ran over right over yeah a bunch of teenagers uh

19:11speeding down our country road and swerved out of the way and ran over him and flattened him

19:17practically fine quarters were and my daughter thought they were flattened and i said well

19:24let's get a pump and we can just pump him back up that went over like a lead balloon oh

19:29my god

19:30you don't joke about stuff no that's terrible

19:36anyway good old dad jokes jokes right so uh and then short sometime after the truck accident

19:46um the vet told us that he did have a tumor in his back leg and he probably wouldn't live

19:52a cancer tumor yeah a cancerous tumor and he may not live too long and that was really sad

19:59uh so we went um we would be i was an entrepreneur so we had some ups and downs in

20:08business sometimes

20:09some great success and sometimes you know some challenges and you know that because you're an

20:14entrepreneur i know i know it's a roller coaster ride isn't it mm-hmm you can tell lots of stories

20:20i'm sure oh yeah so but it was one of those kind of a little bit of a downer time

20:25and boy our friends

20:27said you know you guys need to get away for a good vacation look we'll take you in our airplane

20:32had a real nice fast airplane a bonanza 836 and we'll take you to our congo down in mazalon

20:38mexico we'll just spend a week on the beach you know great idea and we left on an afternoon beautiful

20:45blue sky uh as we got um we decided to drop down in tucson arizona we're in northern utah

20:53so you know um tucson is probably about seven or eight hundred miles and kind of more or less halfway

21:01to

21:01mazalon and we thought well let's just get get to tucson we'll drop down but

21:07the sky was blue in utah but once we hit arizona and got down towards the mexican border we we

21:13hit

21:13this major winter storm and the pilot a friend of mine um was a great pilot he'd flown a lot

21:20in alaska

21:21because he likes to hunt and fish up there and so he'd flown in storms and he wasn't too worried

21:25by it but it it got 50 mile an hour crosswinds and just it it turned into ice and the

21:34faa

21:34uh send us up higher to get above the storm but we encountered more eyes and the wings began to

21:40ice

21:41and the uh windows iced up and it was pretty scary and the motor started sputtering then all

21:50of a sudden it quit we had no power at 10 000 feet no we went down like a lead

21:54balloon because we had a

21:55lot of ice weight and we should all been killed but miraculously he pulled back on the yoke and

22:03lifted it up on upsloping terrain in some shallow mountains and we hit some trees and but but the

22:09fuselage the main body stayed together the motor and the whole front was ripped off of the plane

22:15and we came to a stop uh the pilot and i had major injury critically injured you know we i

22:21had about 15

22:21broken bones my head was ripped our heads were ripped open and we were bleeding profusely and

22:28you know the kids there were uh two couples and five kids uh three of my buddies and two of

22:35ours

22:36uh it wasn't jessica she was actually a freshman in college at that time and we we um we were

22:44both

22:44unconscious the pilot and i and the wives had injuries but they tried to take care of us and yeah

22:50i don't

22:51want to go into too much detail yeah uh we shouldn't have lived through the night but and it took

22:57about

22:58five or six hours and they miraculous the civil air patrol miraculously found us and the big life

23:05flights wouldn't come in until they got us to a road down lower in the mountains and uh so they

23:14a gutsy

23:14helicopter pilot the commander told him not to go up in the storm but he jumped in his chopper and

23:19he flew

23:20us the three of us that were most critically injured to the road to the big life flights

23:26and then the rest of the kids were taken to a closer hospital in in in arizona we were just

23:33north

23:33of the border but these uh rescuers basically saved our life and um if we hadn't if they hadn't found

23:42us

23:42before life the pilot and i for sure would have been dead and you know who knows else but uh

23:49the

23:51convalescing and the healing took a while i was in that hospital for five weeks and they flew the big

23:57life lights flew me flew us to phoenix and after a month uh we they've we i flew home but

24:05they set up a

24:06hospital bed and it took a lot of healing in our home for me and my wife still had injuries

24:11and even

24:12my daughter but we uh you know i have being back with captain made all the difference in the world

24:20and he would lay beside my hospital bed with this unconditional love and he would listen to me not

24:27everybody wanted to listen to me and i don't know just the comfort that he had there and he was

24:34with

24:34our kids we left four of our kids home and he was there to watch over and take care of

24:40them while we

24:40were gone and so that was a big part of maybe why he extended his life because sometime after the

24:48airplane

24:48crash we found out that that tumor had gone oh just disappeared and he lived another three years after

24:59the airplane crash which was 17 years in all so uh miracles are alive and well even with animals right

25:08oh yeah oh my god you want to add yes um

25:14um honestly the compassion that this dog had and the just unconditional love that he had for his family

25:22was just astonishing it he continued to remarkably heal from these awful life-threatening wounds that

25:30should have killed him oh yeah and he continued to be there for our family we in one year one

25:37of the

25:38years we had 14 well over a 10-year period i'm sorry over a 10-year period we had 14

25:46um emergency room

25:48visits and pretty serious um visits nothing simple pretty pretty you know severe serious um incidents

25:56that led us to the er and captain was like the stable he was the stable anchor that really held

26:04us

26:04together through this uh period and he was so his compassion was just so touching and so overwhelming

26:11and the love that he had regardless of how much affection he got in return um he just constantly was

26:20just had this overwhelming love for us and uh stability created a lot of stability for our family

26:27wow wow well said amazing that's amazing i have a pretty special daughter here don't i yaya you do yes

26:34you do but you know girls you know us girls we we're remarkable brothers we felt we wanted to share

26:44this

26:44these stories with our loved ones you know our children and in our extended families and so we wrote this

26:52book and then we realized that you know maybe others could hear a would like to hear a family story

26:59yeah

27:00where a dog was such an integral part the relationship was was so real and so he was more than

27:08just a

27:09dog or a pet yeah and we just thought the world would needs to hear this these stories and so

27:15we

27:15we wrote it my wife wrote most of it i wrote the epilogue the part about the airplane crash and

27:21we've

27:21written other books too um you know we about the airplane crash we wrote a book called divine

27:28intervention by randy and helen hall and uh that tells the whole airplane crash story because it's

27:34rather remarkable in fact we were invited oprah found out about it or the miracles of the airplane crash

27:41and her producer persuaded my wife to come on the show and helen and i and my 17 year old

27:49son we all went

27:51on the oprah one for show to tell our story well wow and i guess uh that's pretty much the

27:57main parts

27:58that we wanted to share with the world today and so we can wrap this up yeah yeah he actually

28:05overcame

28:05cancer uh several times he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and he um it's something would always happen

28:12some kind of uh trauma and tragedy would happen within the family and he put aside and and pulled

28:20through for us and was there and well he's really a remarkable dog wow wow well i mean you know

28:28wow

28:29i know how you feel like my mom my mom's dog is with me i've had him for three years

28:37so yeah i guess

28:38we're finished yes we are i've had i've had my mother's dog with me for three years he was there

28:45when

28:45my mom's husband passed and then he kept her he kept her company can you hear me can you hear

28:53me can you hear me

29:06are you still can you hear me now yeah yeah can you hear me now

29:16where is it i am still here really good the way she did that wasn't it hold on

29:27can you hear me

29:31wow well i don't think they can hear me but um i want to thank you guys so much for

29:36being on the show

29:37we are still here if you can still hear me i don't think you can hear me

29:43i don't know what happened i have no idea what happened but i want to thank you guys so much

29:48for

29:48being on the show randy and uh and you guys thank you and uh this has been another amazing story
