00:35I'm trying to be very good
00:37And I don't know, I don't know if I'm succeeding
00:39I just, I'm keeping it going
00:40I'm keeping it going
00:41But I have an amazing guest today
00:43And I'm so very excited to have him on the show
00:45He has a book called Reflections on Literature
00:48And I, exploring meanings and messages
00:51Okay, so listen, I absolutely love this
00:54This is a podcast about Mr. Robert Van Dellen
00:57Or Dellen, PhD
00:59He has his PhD
01:01Let me tell you something
01:02I absolutely love this
01:04Because we have to really think about it
01:07Literature and history
01:09And reading about history
01:11And going down the road of history
01:13Is very, very important
01:14Because we need to know what happened
01:16So that we don't repeat it in the future
01:17Or, if it's really good
01:19We need to repeat it
01:20We need to continue to repeat it
01:21And I want to welcome Robert to the show
01:23Thank you so much for being here today
01:25Well, it's great to be here
01:27Thank you so much, Yaya
01:28Oh, thank you
01:29Thank you
01:30So, I mean, I want to know
01:31What initially inspired your lifelong passion for literature
01:35And how did that shape your career path?
01:37Well, I grew up reading
01:39I love to read
01:40And I dabbled in poetry
01:41And I wrote essays and short stories
01:44And all of that
01:45And then I went to college
01:47And my professor
01:48One of my professors said
01:50You need to go on to graduate school
01:53Your love of literature
01:55Is your career path
01:57And so I applied for graduate school
02:00And I attended Indiana University
02:03And got a PhD
02:04And then I taught for a number of years
02:07And I taught literature
02:08I taught writing courses
02:10Taught poetry and theater
02:12And Shakespeare and William Blake
02:14And all that kind of stuff
02:17And then my father had a stroke in 1976
02:20I was teaching at a small college in Montana
02:23And that was my dream
02:24I love Montana
02:26I love the college
02:27I love the students
02:28We had about 12% of our students
02:32Were Native American
02:33And I became the faculty advisor
02:35To the Native American students
02:37Which was really, really exciting
02:39Because at the time
02:40I knew nothing about Native Americans
02:42Other than Tonto on the Lone Ranger
02:46So my father had a stroke in 1976
02:49And so I left teaching
02:51And came home to help my mother
02:53Take care of my father
02:54And my younger brother
02:55Take care of the family business
02:58And then a college came to town
03:00And found me
03:01And said
03:02We'd like you to teach for us
03:03And I said
03:05Well, you don't offer
03:06That was a career college
03:07You don't offer literature classes
03:08And they said
03:09No, we want you to teach business
03:11So I said
03:12Okay
03:12So I taught business
03:13So there I was
03:14Back in the college environment
03:15Because I love teaching
03:18And the president of the college
03:20Said I'm going to retire
03:21And I want you to apply
03:22For the presidency
03:22Which he retired
03:24And I applied
03:25And I was hired by the board
03:26To be the president
03:27So I ended my career full circle
03:30Starting as a professor
03:32And ending as a college president
03:35Oh my gosh
03:36Yeah
03:36So then
03:39I didn't want to spend
03:41The rest of my life
03:42Playing golf or pickleball
03:44So I started writing essays
03:46And I started giving talks
03:48And I have a website
03:50Where my talks are listed
03:52And it's called
03:52Bob Talks on Literature
03:54And I started giving talks
03:56At museums and libraries
03:57And book clubs
03:58And Zoom
03:59And my wife said to me
04:02One day
04:02You've got all these talks
04:04What are you going to do with them
04:05And I said
04:06Well I don't know
04:07And she said
04:07Well wouldn't they make essays
04:10And convert them into essays
04:12And publish them as books
04:13So here we are
04:15I have two volumes out
04:16Volume one is on the modern novel
04:18And volume two is on poetry
04:21And drama
04:22It's called
04:23Touching your souls
04:25Through poetry and drama
04:27And I have enough material
04:28To do volume three
04:30As well
04:31So I give talks
04:35Bob talks on literature
04:37And I do book signings
04:38And that's how it all
04:40It all happened
04:42And teaching and writing
04:44Has been my passion
04:46Wow
04:46So your first volume
04:48Focuses on literature
04:49From the roaring 20s
04:50Right?
04:51Well it's on the modern novel
04:53And the first chapter
04:54The first essay
04:55There's an introduction
04:55And then there's a chapter
04:57On the roaring 20s
04:58Aha okay
04:59And then what drew you
05:00To this particular era
05:01And why do you think
05:02It remains relevant today
05:03Well
05:05I'm interested
05:06Yeah yeah
05:08I'm interested
05:08In periods of history
05:10Where human beings
05:13Reached the kind of
05:14Peak performance
05:15And
05:17Transcended all the clutter
05:18And all the prejudice
05:19And racism
05:20And all this stuff
05:21That gets in the way
05:22Of being human beings
05:24And the roaring 20s
05:25Is a time when that happened
05:26It was a time
05:29When we had an explosion
05:30It was kind of
05:31A renaissance of art
05:32In the United States
05:34And in Europe
05:35England as well
05:37When there was
05:38Kind of a coalition
05:39A coalescing of factors
05:41That brought tremendous change
05:43As you probably know
05:45Jazz started in the roaring 20s
05:48Yes
05:48And with jazz came
05:50At least some efforts
05:53At integration
05:54Because most of the jazz magicians
05:56Were black
05:57Yeah
05:58And so if whites
05:59If whites who were attracted
06:00And brought
06:02Brought into the world of jazz
06:04Wanted to live in that world
06:06They had to have black entertainers
06:08Well they did
06:09And they had to work with blacks too
06:11That's right
06:11They had to work with them
06:12In fact
06:13Not far from where I live
06:14Is a community called
06:16Baldwin, Michigan
06:17And they had
06:18A live jazz concert hall
06:21And they brought Duke Ellington
06:22And people like that
06:25And it was also
06:27It was also
06:28In the underground railroad
06:30At Baldwin, Michigan
06:32And it took slaves
06:33And brought them north
06:35So the roaring 20s
06:37Was going through
06:38A mass exodus
06:40From the farmlands
06:42Into the cities
06:43Of Paris and London
06:44And New York and Chicago
06:47And we had an explosion
06:49In art and music
06:50And in literature
06:52And if you look at the novels
06:54That were written
06:55During the 1920s
06:57You have just
06:58An outburst
07:00Of creative greatness
07:01You have Hemingway
07:02And Fitzgerald
07:04And you have James Joyce
07:08And you have Ezra Pound
07:10And T.S. Eliot
07:11And Theodore Dreiser
07:13On and on and on
07:14And there's probably
07:16Over 200 significant novels
07:19That were written
07:20During the 1920s
07:22And of course
07:23It all came to an end
07:24At an abrupt halt
07:25With the crash
07:26In the 1930s
07:28And the roaring 20s
07:31Fizzled out
07:31But it certainly roared
07:33For a long time
07:33And it was
07:34It's a very, very
07:36Interesting period
07:37In our history
07:38That offers hope
07:40People were dancing together
07:42And they were doing
07:43Women's dress was changing
07:45And theater was booming
07:47And talk radio started
07:49During that time
07:50And the first motion pictures
07:51Started during the 1920s
07:53So my essay
07:55On the roaring 20s
07:56Tries to capture that
07:58And explain
07:58What were the conditions
08:00That created this great literature
08:02And how did it happen
08:05So that's the start
08:07Of my book
08:08That's where I explore
08:10Meanings and messages
08:11And yeah
08:15Wow
08:16So what
08:16Okay so
08:18What motivated you
08:19To create the lectures
08:20On literature series
08:21For the Elliott Museum
08:22So
08:23And what has it been
08:24A response
08:25For your audiences
08:26In Florida
08:26Yeah
08:27And now I'm doing them
08:29All over northern Michigan
08:31In museums and libraries
08:33I've got probably
08:34Ten talks lined up
08:36This summer
08:36In libraries
08:37Nice
08:38I attended a lecture
08:40At the Elliott Museum
08:41On the renaissance
08:45And the woman
08:49That was giving the lecture
08:50Was explaining
08:51The cultural context
08:52That created the renaissance
08:54Michelangelo
08:54And Leonardo da Vinci
08:56And all of that
08:59And I was fascinated by it
09:02And afterwards
09:04The woman who directs
09:05The programs
09:06For talks
09:09Was there
09:10And I introduced myself
09:12And I said
09:13I'm a frustrated professor
09:15Would you have any interest
09:17In talks on literature
09:18She said
09:18Oh boy
09:19I've been looking
09:20For somebody to do that
09:21Yes, yes
09:22So I started
09:23In 2016
09:25I started doing
09:26Talks at the Elliott Museum
09:28And I would do
09:29Four a winter
09:30We winter in Florida
09:32And that went on
09:34For many years
09:36Then COVID hit
09:38And people contacted me
09:40And said
09:42Can't you do your talks
09:43Through Zoom
09:44And I didn't even know
09:46What Zoom was
09:46But my younger son
09:50Said Dad
09:50I can teach you
09:51Zoom
09:52And put the program
09:53On your computer
09:54So I did a whole bunch
09:55Of Zoom talks
09:56On literature
09:57And then
09:59COVID ended
10:00I went back
10:00To the Elliott
10:01And then
10:02Libraries
10:03Found out about me
10:04Here
10:05And said
10:06Hey
10:06We'd like you
10:07To do programs here
10:08So
10:08That's how it all
10:10Kind of happened
10:10And that led
10:12Of course
10:12To the books
10:13Yeah
10:13So
10:14Your upcoming volumes
10:15Will cover a wide
10:16Range of authors
10:17From Shakespeare
10:18To Maya Angelou
10:19I mean
10:20How do you select
10:21Which authors
10:21And works
10:22Do you include
10:22In your series
10:23Though
10:23I select them
10:26Based on literature
10:27I love
10:29There's so much
10:30Out there
10:30And if a writer
10:32Doesn't touch me
10:34Art is about
10:35Making connections
10:36Yeah
10:37And in order
10:38To make connections
10:39The artist
10:40Is inviting you
10:41Into their space
10:42You do that
10:44When you perform
10:46You're saying
10:47To the audience
10:48Out there
10:48Suspend your disbelief
10:50Trust me
10:52You're going
10:53To be invited
10:54Into my space
10:55For a time
10:57And it's going
10:58To be rewarding
10:59To you
10:59And when you
11:00Do that
11:00We're going
11:01To connect
11:02And so
11:03I choose
11:05Literature
11:05And I love
11:06Painting
11:06And music
11:07As well
11:07Bob Dylan
11:08Is one of
11:09My favorite
11:09Oh yeah
11:10I'm a friend
11:11Of Bob Dylan
11:12I've been
11:13To six
11:13Dylan concerts
11:14Anyway
11:15I choose
11:16Literature
11:16That connects
11:18With me
11:18Where I have
11:20An aha
11:20Experience
11:21And I say
11:22Yes
11:22You have
11:23Just helped
11:24Me understand
11:24Myself
11:25And the world
11:26In which I live
11:27Or the history
11:28That helped us
11:29Get where we are
11:30Today
11:30For better
11:31Or for worse
11:32And so
11:36That's how I choose
11:37Maya Angelou
11:38I love Maya Angelou
11:40I went to a poetry
11:41Reading of hers
11:43And she
11:44She hooked me
11:45I mean
11:45It was like
11:46My god
11:47This woman
11:48And I think
11:49She's one of
11:49The greatest
11:50Poets
11:51Of all times
11:52She's
11:53She's
11:54She's a legend
11:55And of course
11:55Her life
11:56Is fascinating
11:59And one of the
12:01Things I never
12:01Realized about
12:02Maya Angelou
12:03Until I looked
12:03At her
12:04Her literature
12:05Closely
12:06Is how
12:07Confessional
12:08And autobiographical
12:10It is
12:11And I think
12:11That's true
12:12Of all good
12:13Art
12:14That
12:15Paintings
12:16The impressionist
12:17Painters
12:17Robert Frost
12:20James Baldwin
12:23Native American
12:25Writers
12:26They all
12:28They all
12:30Make connections
12:31With us
12:31And I choose
12:33I choose the
12:33Literature where
12:34That happens
12:35And part of
12:36That connection
12:37For me
12:37Is my love
12:38Of the wilderness
12:38And I've done
12:39A lot of
12:39Backpacking
12:40And wilderness
12:41Canoe camping
12:42And it struck
12:44Me
12:44I was working
12:45On Maya Angelou
12:46And Mary Oliver
12:47I was going
12:48To do a talk
12:48At the Elliot
12:50On the two
12:50Of them
12:50And it struck
12:51Me how both
12:52Of them
12:53Use nature
12:54As a platform
12:56For connecting
12:57With us
12:58And I didn't
13:00Realize that
13:00About Maya Angelou
13:01Until I looked
13:02At her
13:04In the context
13:05Of Mary Oliver
13:07Who of course
13:07Is a continuation
13:09Of Emerson
13:10And Thoreau
13:10And all those
13:11People
13:11And I think
13:13Maya Angelou
13:13Is also
13:15Very transcendental
13:17She's
13:17Her
13:18Spiritual self
13:19Comes out
13:20In her
13:20Poems
13:21Amazing
13:22Amazing poet
13:23Amazing
13:24She was amazing
13:25She was definitely
13:26Amazing
13:26She was one
13:27Of my favorite
13:27Poets
13:28And I didn't
13:29Have too many
13:29So I mean
13:31Okay so could
13:32You elaborate
13:32On how literature
13:33Explores themes
13:34Of love and friendship
13:35And why these
13:36Themes resonate
13:37So deeply
13:38With readers
13:38Today
13:40Yeah isn't
13:41It strange
13:41I remember
13:42When television
13:43Came out
13:44Everybody predicted
13:45That the novel
13:46Would be dead
13:47And nobody
13:48Nobody would
13:50Go to theater
13:50Anymore
13:51And nobody
13:51Would read
13:52Poetry
13:53And the
13:53Reverses
13:54Happened
13:54Oh yeah
13:55Oh yeah
13:56You look at
13:57The explosion
13:59Of literature
14:00Kristen Hanna's
14:02Books
14:02Her recent
14:03Book
14:03The Women
14:05And you look
14:06At the
14:07Popularity
14:07Of poetry
14:08And novels
14:09And movies
14:10And I think
14:12That all
14:14Of that
14:14And art
14:15Too
14:16All of that
14:18Really invites
14:19Us
14:21To feel
14:21Alive
14:22Yeah
14:23And it's
14:24More important
14:25Now
14:25And I'm
14:26Going way
14:26Out on a
14:27Limb here
14:28Yeah
14:28I think
14:29It's more
14:29Important
14:30Now
14:30Because the
14:31Politics
14:32Is making
14:33Us feel
14:33Dead
14:34And so
14:35To read
14:37A Maya
14:37Angelo
14:38Poem
14:38Or a
14:38Mary
14:39Oliver
14:39Poem
14:39Or go
14:40To a
14:40Shakespeare
14:40Play
14:42They're
14:43Saying that
14:43Reality
14:44Is not
14:45Real
14:46It's
14:46Here for a
14:47Short period
14:47Of time
14:48And it's
14:48Ugly
14:48And it's
14:49Mean
14:49And it's
14:51Hurting
14:52People
14:52And it's
14:52Divisive
14:53But that's
14:54Not
14:54What it
14:55Means
14:55To be
14:56Human
14:56So I
14:57Think
14:58That
14:58Art
14:58All
14:59Art
15:00Music
15:01Paintings
15:02Poetry
15:04All of
15:05It invites
15:06Us
15:06Or
15:06In fact
15:07Is
15:07Conjoles
15:08Us
15:09Prods
15:09Us
15:10To feel
15:10Alive
15:11And to
15:12Ask
15:12The
15:12Important
15:13Questions
15:13About what
15:14It means
15:14To be
15:14Human
15:15Definitely
15:16You know
15:17I'm
15:18Sorry
15:18To
15:18No
15:19You
15:20You
15:20Know
15:21You
15:21Were
15:21Saying
15:21That
15:22These
15:23Things
15:23Are
15:23Coming
15:23Back
15:24I
15:24Think
15:24It's
15:25The
15:25Tangible
15:25You
15:27Know
15:27The
15:27Record
15:27The
15:27Record
15:28You
15:29Know
15:29Vinyl
15:29Has
15:30Come
15:30Back
15:31It
15:32Is
15:33Okay
15:34You
15:35Know
15:35If
15:35You're
15:35Going
15:35To
15:35Have
15:36An
15:36Artist
15:36That
15:37Serious
15:37About
15:37Their
15:38Craft
15:38They're
15:38Going
15:38To
15:38Have
15:39At
15:39Least
15:39A
15:39Few
15:40Vinyls
15:40Available
15:42It's
15:43Just
15:43One
15:43Of
15:43Those
15:43Things
15:44A
15:44Record
15:44Player
15:44Came
15:45Back
15:45I
15:45Think
15:46It's
15:46More
15:46Tangible
15:47Because
15:48We
15:48Have
15:48AI
15:49Out
15:49There
15:50That's
15:50Putting
15:51Out
15:51False
15:52Pretenses
15:53And
15:53And
15:54Just
15:54Fake
15:54Things
15:55And
15:56People
15:57Are
15:57Like
15:57What's
15:58Real
15:58What's
15:59Not
15:59Real
15:59So
16:00A
16:00Book
16:00In
16:01Your
16:01Hand
16:01A
16:02Record
16:02In
16:03Your
16:03Hand
16:03I
16:04Wouldn't
16:04Be
16:04Surprised
16:05If
16:05CDs
16:05And
16:05Cassette
16:06Tapes
16:06Made
16:06An
16:07Appearance
16:08Because
16:09I
16:10Have
16:10A
16:10Cassette
16:11Player
16:11Behind
16:11Me
16:12It's
16:12Brand
16:12New
16:12Cassette
16:14So
16:15To
16:16Me
16:16It's
16:17I
16:17Think
16:18It's
16:18The
16:18Tangible
16:19People
16:19Want
16:20To
16:20Feel
16:20It
16:21They
16:21Want
16:21To
16:21See
16:21It's
16:21Real
16:23They
16:23They
16:24Want
16:24To
16:24Make
16:24Sure
16:25It's
16:25Real
16:25And
16:25It's
16:26Not
16:26Fake
16:26And
16:27You
16:28Know
16:28And
16:28If
16:28It
16:28Is
16:28Fake
16:29They
16:29Want
16:29It
16:29To
16:30Be
16:30Interesting
16:30Like
16:30A
16:31Movie
16:31You
16:31Know
16:32It's
16:33Just
16:33Amazing
16:33Like
16:34You
16:34Said
16:34How
16:35These
16:35Things
16:35Are
16:36Kind
16:36Of
16:36Making
16:36Making
16:36A
16:37Comeback
16:37But
16:37I
16:37Do
16:38Believe
16:38That
16:38It
16:38Is
16:39Within
16:39The
16:40Tangible
16:40You
16:41Have
16:41To
16:41Have
16:42It
16:42In
16:42Your
16:42Hands
16:42To
16:43Make
16:43Sure
16:43That
16:44This
16:44Is
16:45Yours
16:45And
16:46Not
16:46Like
16:46A
16:46Digital
16:47Version
16:47Where
16:48It
16:49Could
16:49Be
16:49Lost
16:49Or
16:50Deleted
16:50Or
16:50Something
16:51You
16:51Know
16:51What
16:51I
16:51Mean
16:52Yes
16:52Yes
16:53I
16:53Do
16:53It's
16:55And
16:56My
16:57Wife
16:57And
16:57I
16:57For
16:58Over
16:5820
16:58Years
16:58Go
16:59To
16:59Stratford
17:00Canada
17:00Every
17:01Summer
17:01And
17:02See
17:02We
17:03Go
17:03To
17:03The
17:03Shakespeare
17:04Festival
17:04And
17:04We
17:04See
17:05All
17:05Kind
17:05Of
17:05Plays
17:06And
17:08It's
17:08Amazing
17:09To
17:09Me
17:09How
17:11Packed
17:11The
17:12Theaters
17:12Are
17:12There
17:12Five
17:13Theaters
17:13In
17:13Stratford
17:15And
17:15They
17:16Put
17:16A
17:16Whole
17:16Variety
17:17Of
17:17Plays
17:17On
17:19Experimental
17:19Plays
17:20And
17:20Shakespeare
17:21Plays
17:21And
17:22Everything
17:22In
17:22Between
17:23And
17:24You
17:24Go
17:24To
17:24The
17:24Theaters
17:25And
17:25They
17:25Are
17:25Just
17:25Packed
17:26With
17:26People
17:27And
17:27When
17:28People
17:28Leave
17:29The
17:29Theater
17:30Even
17:31When
17:31It's
17:32Play
17:32Like
17:32King
17:33Lear
17:34Which
17:35Just
17:35Hits
17:36You
17:36In
17:36The
17:36Gut
17:36I
17:36Mean
17:37King
17:37Lear
17:37Just
17:37That
17:38Play
17:39Tells
17:39You
17:42Here's
17:42How
17:43Ugly
17:43It
17:43Can
17:43Get
17:44And
17:44You
17:44Leave
17:45That
17:46Play
17:46And
17:46You
17:46Feel
17:47No
17:48That's
17:48Not
17:49Shakespeare
17:49No
17:50That's
17:51Not
17:51How
17:51We
17:52Have
17:52To
17:52Be
17:52And
17:53You
17:53Leave
17:53The
17:53Theater
17:54Feeling
17:54Connected
17:55To
17:56People
17:56And
17:57To
17:57Life
17:57And
17:58That's
17:59That's
18:00What
18:00Art
18:00I
18:00Think
18:01That's
18:01What
18:01Art
18:01Is
18:01All
18:01About
18:02Whether
18:03It's
18:03A
18:03Simple
18:04Rhyme
18:05Or
18:05A
18:07Piece
18:07Of
18:07Music
18:09It's
18:09All
18:09About
18:10Touching
18:10One
18:10Another
18:11And
18:12Being
18:12Inclusive
18:13Not
18:14Building
18:14Walls
18:15And
18:15Putting
18:15Up
18:15Barriers
18:16But
18:16Opening
18:16Doors
18:17And
18:19That's
18:19My
18:20Passion
18:20Is
18:20To
18:20Try
18:21And
18:21Communicate
18:21That
18:22So
18:22All
18:22Of
18:22My
18:22Books
18:23Make
18:24That
18:24Point
18:24Over
18:25And
18:25Over
18:25Again
18:25In
18:26My
18:26Essays
18:26That
18:26Why
18:27Are
18:27You
18:27Reading
18:27This
18:28Stuff
18:29Why
18:29Am I
18:30Talking
18:30About
18:30It
18:31Because
18:31It's
18:31It's
18:31About
18:33Realizing
18:33We're
18:33All
18:34Part
18:34Of
18:34The
18:34Human
18:34Family
18:35Yes
18:35And
18:36And
18:37The
18:37More
18:37Diverse
18:37That
18:38Family
18:38Is
18:38The
18:39More
18:39We
18:39Celebrate
18:40That
18:40Diversity
18:41The
18:41Stronger
18:42We
18:42Are
18:42Not
18:43The
18:43Weaker
18:43Definitely
18:44Definitely
18:45Well
18:46So
18:47What
18:47Role
18:47Do
18:47You
18:48Believe
18:48Literature
18:48Plays
18:49In
18:49Understanding
18:49And
18:50Preserving
18:50Cultural
18:51Identity
18:51Especially
18:52In
18:52The
18:52Context
18:53Of
18:53American
18:54West
18:54Mythology
18:55Well
18:58I
18:59Have
18:59A
18:59Chapter
19:00On
19:00Literature
19:01An
19:01Essay
19:01On
19:01Literature
19:02Of
19:02The
19:02West
19:03And
19:04How
19:05It's
19:05Been
19:05Romanticized
19:06And
19:08And
19:09It
19:09Really
19:10Is
19:10Emblematic
19:11Of
19:13Of
19:14Shameful
19:14Things
19:15In
19:15Our
19:15History
19:15That
19:16We
19:16Still
19:16Don't
19:16Face
19:17Honestly
19:17And
19:18Openly
19:18Speak
19:19It
19:19True
19:19Speak
19:20It
19:21So
19:21The
19:22Cowboy
19:23Is
19:23Wasn't
19:24The
19:24Real
19:25Cowboy
19:25I
19:25Lived
19:26In
19:26Montana
19:26For
19:26Seven
19:27Years
19:27And
19:27I
19:27Spent
19:28A
19:28Lot
19:28Of
19:28Time
19:28On
19:28A
19:28Ranch
19:29And
19:30I
19:30Spent
19:30A
19:30Lot
19:30Of
19:30Time
19:31On
19:31The
19:31Crow
19:31Indian
19:31Reservation
19:33And
19:35And
19:36The
19:36Difference
19:36Between
19:37A
19:37Cowboy
19:37Cowboys
19:38Aren't
19:38What
19:39You
19:39See
19:39On
19:39The
19:40Ranch
19:40And
19:41So
19:42We
19:42Created
19:42This
19:42Whole
19:42Mythology
19:44And
19:44I
19:45Was
19:45Struggling
19:45With
19:46Trying
19:46To
19:46Understand
19:46Why
19:47And
19:47I
19:48Came
19:48To
19:48Realize
19:50That
19:50That
19:51Created
19:51That
19:51Mythology
19:52Because
19:52Then
19:53We
19:53Don't
19:54Have
19:54To
19:54Deal
19:54With
19:55What
19:55We
19:56Did
19:56To
19:56The
19:56Indians
19:57We
19:58Can
19:58Celebrate
19:59The
19:59Lone
20:00Ranger
20:00And
20:01The
20:02Western
20:02Heroes
20:03And
20:03The
20:03Man
20:04With
20:04The
20:04White
20:04Hat
20:05On
20:05A
20:05Horse
20:05That
20:06Never
20:07Has
20:07To
20:07Be
20:07Fed
20:07And
20:08The
20:08Quick
20:09Draw
20:09Of
20:10The
20:10Gun
20:10And
20:10Walk
20:11Into
20:11A
20:11Bar
20:12And
20:12All
20:12That
20:12Machacho
20:15Stuff
20:16And
20:16That
20:17Not
20:17What
20:17Happened
20:18I
20:19Mean
20:19My
20:20God
20:20We
20:20We
20:21Took

22:26Pretense
22:26It's

22:28I
22:28Understand

22:29You're

22:47That
22:47My

22:48At
22:49One
22:49Point
22:50Were

22:51So
22:51Much
22:51Into
22:51Different
22:52Categories
22:53At
22:53One
22:53Particular
22:54Time
22:54That
22:55I
22:55Too
22:55Was
22:56A
22:57Direct
22:57Result
22:58Of
22:58The
22:58Suffering
22:59And
23:00and the belittling and, you know,
23:04that push down of the Native American.
23:07And it feels like as if I got hit twice,
23:10maybe three or four times, you know?
23:15But the people here are strong.
23:17And, but I just, I think that you're right.
23:20It has been romanticized and to have that history
23:23and for them to negate that and neglect that
23:25and just kind of put it under the rug,
23:28would kind of, you know, sweep it under the rug
23:30along with a lot of different people, Irish.
23:32Oh yeah.
23:33You know, you have, I'm quite Irish, go figure.
23:36Like I said, three or four times.
23:38Yeah.
23:39And so, it's like, it's that romanticism, like you said,
23:45that they want to, you know, portray one thing
23:48when it really isn't anywhere near that.
23:51And I think history is definitely something
23:54that we should hold on to
23:55and make sure that people know
23:57what really truly happened.
23:59Sure, sure, I agree, yeah.
24:03Yeah, so looking forward, what are your hopes
24:05for the impact of the Reflections on Literature Series
24:07for readers and in the border literary community?
24:12Yeah, thank you for that question.
24:14I, writing books and trying to market books
24:19is a very challenging endeavor.
24:21Oh yeah.
24:22And I think, not egotistical, but I'm 83 years old
24:27and I'm at the, I'm in the fourth quarter of my life.
24:30So I don't have, I don't have fantasies or delusions
24:34about, you know, becoming a bestseller or anything like that.
24:38I just would like to expand my readership
24:40and have more people, because the people that have bought my book
24:44and read them have all gotten, many of them have gotten back to me
24:47and said, oh, this is really interesting.
24:49This is really good.
24:50So this podcast I decided to do to try and reach a broader audience.
24:56And I think it's wonderful that you do these kind of interviews
25:00and that you have this, this, this program.
25:04So that's, so my goal is to do, do a podcast with you.
25:09I thought some people talked me into it and said,
25:12I think that it'll allow you to open more doors
25:16so that you can expand your readership.
25:18So that's one of my goals.
25:20And I'm going to keep writing.
25:22I'm working on a book that's going to come out in the fall on George Orwell.
25:26Uh, and it's, uh, it's titled Orwell's Alert and I, and I framed the book
25:32in the context of, uh, what's going on politically today.
25:36And, and, and I, I say that Orwell warned us about all this stuff
25:41and we didn't listen then and we damn well better listen now.
25:45Uh, and so my book studies his novels as, uh, examples of, of, uh, autocracies
25:53and totalitarianism and what happens to people when the politics of control repress, represses people.
26:00And that's what we're seeing played out today.
26:02Definitely.
26:04Yeah.
26:05I want to thank you so much for joining me on this podcast though.
26:08Do you know, you don't even know how much I am like honored for you to be here
26:12and say what you said.
26:13Thank you so much.
26:14Well, thank you.
26:15Yeah.
26:15Yeah.
26:15I appreciate it very much.
26:16I just wanted to say, if, if you don't know David Truer's book, uh, The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee,
26:24David Truer, The Heartbeat of Wounded Tree, uh, you will love that book.
26:29Um, it, it's, it's a, it's a book that really touches your soul and, and it's very hopeful.
26:34It's a, it's a, it doesn't hide grim realities, but it's a very hopeful, positive book.
26:39And David Truer is, uh, uh, uh, an Indian and, uh, Native American and he writes, uh, beautifully.
26:47Wow.
26:47Well, thank you so much.
26:49You have.
26:55You there?
26:57Yeah, I'm here.
26:58Are you actually starting your own podcast?
27:02Well, no, I, I, I, I, uh, I, I, I'm not, I don't know how to do that.
27:08Well, you should, you should just get on and do it because I think you have so much
27:13in, you know, knowledge and everything.
27:15And you do have your literary, you can also just take your audio and, and put it out there
27:20as well for your, your projects, your, your speeches and things like that.
27:24You could put it on YouTube and things like that.
27:25I think people need to see it because you're right.
27:28People are fantasizing and they're not telling the truth.
27:31And the truth is, it's not even coming out, you know, like the Indians you said, you know,
27:36and there's so many different mixes is, you know, you have whites that are mixed with Indian.
27:42You have blacks that are mixed with Indian.
27:43You have so many different, and we all have suffered at one point or another from our families,
27:49you know, maybe us, not us personally, but the lineage going back has suffered.
27:54And we are the results of that.
27:56And I don't believe that that should be let go so easily.
27:59Well, thank you.
28:00I appreciate that.
28:02Yeah, definitely.
28:03Well, thank you so much.
28:06I enjoyed it.
28:07Oh, thank you.
28:08And you guys, I'm going to go ahead and put that book up here.

28:25and taken his time, you know, you might be in the fourth quarter of your life,
28:30but you're teaching people in the first, and that's what makes the difference.
28:34That's what makes the difference.
28:36We need to leave it here.
28:37We need to teach them and let them never forget, never forget.
28:40We don't want to repeat what we did.
28:43We just don't.
28:44Yeah, you're a gem.
28:46Oh, thank you.
