Carlos Ramon invents a new instrument for a class concert at the Sound Museum, but it sounds awful. When the bus breaks down, they miss the rehearsal, giving Carlos more time to perfect his instrument. But to do so, the class must learn how sound is made in the middle of the night in the Sound Museum itself, where they learn about its history.

01:50Um, Carlos, was it supposed to sound like that?
01:54No way.
01:55I don't get it.
01:57It looks incredible, but it sounds...
02:00Loopy?
02:01Exactly.
02:02What did I do wrong?
02:11Wow!
02:12She's amazing.
02:15That's one way to look at it.
02:20Good morning, class.
02:23Good morning, Miss Frizzle.
02:26Dorothy Ann, I take it that that was your new piece,
02:29Concerto for Invented Instrument.
02:32Well, it was the concerto part, all right, but...
02:35But the Invented Instrument was...
02:37Loopy.
02:38And there's almost no time to fix it before the concert at the Sound Museum tomorrow.
02:43Yeah, and we've got a rehearsal there this afternoon.
02:47So, what's the problem, Carlos?
02:49Well, I have a great idea for a sound.
02:52And I see you're building an impressive instrument to make it.
02:56Marvelous!
02:57That's the problem.
02:58I can hear the sound in my head, but I...
03:03Loopy!
03:04What am I going to do?
03:06Well, if you keep asking questions, Carlos, you'll keep getting answers.
03:11But there's no time for questions, Miss Frizzle.
03:14We're going to be late for the rehearsal at the Sound Museum.
03:17And as we all know, those who are great are never late.
03:22Come along, class.
03:23To the bus.
03:26We're going?
03:27Now?
03:28But...
03:29But Miss Frizzle!
03:32But what if the sound of Carlos' instrument stays...
03:36Just like that.
03:38Oh, our concerto will be ruined.
03:40All the other schools will laugh at us and it will be the end of the world as we know
03:44it.
03:44Other than that, nothing.
03:46Hmm.
03:47What else can I put on this thing to get it to make a terrific sound?
03:52Hmm.
03:53Let's see.
03:54Okay, there!
03:57If I only had more time!
04:00Hmm.
04:01More time.
04:03Okay, bus.
04:04Do your stuff.
04:08Wahoo!
04:14An award-winning performance, bus!
04:17Oh, my!
04:18Whoa!
04:21And now for the grand finale.
04:25Oh, my!
04:27Oh, my!
04:28Oh, my!
04:28Oh, my!
04:28Oh, my!
04:28Oh, my!
04:29Oh, my!
04:31What happened?
04:33Oh, not to worry, class.
04:35I'll just be a moment.
04:37Oh, dear.
04:38Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm.
04:40Na-dee-la-la-la-la-la-la.
04:47Hmm, hmm, hmm.
04:48Just as I thought.
04:50Overheated.
04:51Well, I believe we'll be here for quite a while.
04:55We're going to miss the dress rehearsal.
04:58Oh, now rest up.
05:00We're going to miss the dress rehearsal.
05:00You'll be fine.
05:01All right.
05:02Time to work on the sound.
05:05Miss Frizzle, isn't there something we can do?
05:08Well, now that you mention it.
05:17It's really quiet, isn't it?
05:21There's hardly a sound.
05:23Just us.
05:24Desperate.
05:25Alone.
05:27Vulnerable.
05:30What was that?
05:31It was me.
05:33How was that, Dorothy Ann?
05:34I want my instrument to have the power of a thunderstorm,
05:37so I put an umbrella on it.
05:39That sounded more like drizzle, Carlos.
05:42Oh.
05:43How about this?
05:44I wanted it to have the roar of a lion,
05:47so I gave it a mane.
05:50It's a kitten, Carlos.
06:03Forget it, Carlos.
06:05It looks better and better,
06:07but it sounds worse and worse.
06:14What was that?
06:16All right.
06:17That's a great sound.
06:19But it wasn't me.
06:22It came from there.
06:30Oh, isn't it mellifluous?
06:33That's not exactly the word I'd use for it.
06:36Come on, Arnold.
06:37It's just a house.
06:38You're not scared of a house, are you?
06:43Me, too.
06:45What's wrong with you, class?
06:46Where's your spirit of adventure?
06:49Take chances.
06:50Make mistakes.
06:52Get scared out of our wits.
06:54Oh, don't be such a chicken, Ralphie.
06:57There must be a phone in there.
06:59We can call a tow truck.
07:01Come on.
07:23What a weird place.
07:26Kind of eerie, isn't it?
07:29Get it, eerie?
07:30Ha, ha, ha.
07:31Carlos.
07:42All I've got to say is,
07:44if I meet anybody I can see through,
07:46I'm out of here.
07:48Whoa, whoa.
07:49No need to be hasty, Arnold.
07:59That is some doorbell.
08:01Oh, well.
08:02Nobody home.
08:03Let's go.
08:03Good idea.
08:04I'm with Arnold.
08:05But I need to know what made that sound.
08:10Come on.
08:13How nice.
08:15Shall we?
08:16Must we?
08:45Open, open, open.
08:48It's stuck.
08:49What do we do now?
08:50We say, hello.
08:56Well, that sounds friendly enough.
09:00What a place.
09:02We've got a phone for help.
09:03Oh, good.
09:04Here's a phone book.
09:07What was that?
09:09That was a tantalizing tin-tin-abulation.
09:13No, don't.
09:17Oh, foghorn, one of my favorites.
09:20Such a big, deep sound.
09:22Maybe one of these books was making the sound I heard.
09:27That's it.
09:28I don't need to know how this turns out.
09:30I'm out of here.
09:34What kind of place is this?
09:43What kind of place is this?
10:00The sound museum.
10:02This is the sound museum?
10:05I knew it.
10:06We missed the rehearsal.
10:08Well, where is everyone?
10:10Gone for the night, Tim.
10:11Which means we have the whole place to ourselves.
10:15Oh, boy.
10:17Oh, boy.
10:26Professor Contralto devoted her entire life to sound.
10:32Huh?
10:33What happened to her?
10:35No one knows.
10:38Well, I'll bet you anything she's a ghost wandering around this house seeking the perfect sound.
10:45Wow!
10:47Seeking the perfect sound.
10:50Just like me.
10:51Well, Carlos, you'll have plenty of time to find it.
10:54We're spending the night.
10:56The night here?
10:57But our permission slips didn't say anything about haunted houses.
11:01Besides, there's no place for us.
11:06To sleep!
11:11Oh, why, look.
11:13Eight student-sized beds.
11:16And a teacher-sized annex.
11:19It's almost as if someone were expecting us.
11:31Be sure to get lots of rest class.
11:34We have a concert tomorrow.
11:36Oh!
11:38Now maybe it'll sound like a ghost.
11:43Carlos, that's the ploopiest yet.
11:46It's too late anyway.
11:47You'll never find a sound now.
11:52Cornelia, if you're out there, will you help me make this thing sound right?
11:58Carlos, Miss Frizzle said if you kept asking questions, you'd keep getting answers.
12:03Was that an answer?
12:05Was that an answer?
12:08No.
12:09But that was...
12:11Don't be silly.
12:12It's just...
12:13Yikes!
12:15A crazed ghost, bound forever in the chains of eternal torment, coming to get us!
12:22Listen, it's...
12:24Listen.
12:24It's...
12:24It's...
12:25It's...
12:25Yeah, yeah.
12:25Terrifying.
12:26We know.
12:27No!
12:28It's the call of Cornelia!
12:30Carlos, where are you going?
12:32I've got to find out what's making that sound.
12:36Um, should somebody tell Miss Frizzle?
12:41Yay!
12:43Get out of here!
12:44Listen.
12:45It's getting louder.
12:47And according to my research, it's getting louder.
12:51We're getting closer.
12:52Is that good or bad?
12:55Bad.
12:59What is that?
13:01It's coming from in there.
13:04I'm going in!
13:06No, Carlos!
13:07No!
13:11Wow!
13:13Incredible!
13:23This is one weird house.
13:25One weird house.
13:27You mean your house doesn't have a jungle, an ocean, a city, and an alpine wonderland?
13:34Nah, the landlord wouldn't go along with it.
13:37Damn!
13:40An echo!
13:42Maybe it was an echo we heard.
13:45Yeah, but who made it?
13:47Hey!
13:49Last, did I wake you?
13:53Ms. Frizzle?
13:55Was that you?
13:56Oh, yes.
13:57Nothing like a good yodel before bed.
14:00Toodaloo-loo!
14:02Toodaloo!
14:03Toodaloo!
14:04Toodaloo!
14:04Toodaloo!
14:06Listen!
14:07There it is again!
14:08The call of Cornelia!
14:10Uh, how do we get out of here?
14:12The only way is up!
14:15Whoa!
14:16Come along, class.
14:18Two by two, please.
14:20Ha ha ha ha!
14:23Ah!
14:25Ah!
14:33Where are we?
14:36Professor Contralto built every room in this house to show different things about sound.
14:41Ah, simply soundiferous.
14:44Hey!
14:45I've always wanted to play a heart.
14:49Look at that string moving back and forth.
14:52What?
14:52That, class, is the vibration.
14:54You can feel it.
14:58Vibration.
14:59Let's get the facts.
15:01When the string stopped vibrating, the sound stopped.
15:08The vibration of the string!
15:11That's what's making the sound!
15:13Very good, Carlos.
15:15Sound is vibration.
15:17Hear it!
15:18Feel it!
15:19Are all sounds made by something vibrating?
15:22Ha!
15:23Good question, Carlos!
15:25Come on, Phoebe!
15:26Let's try out that drum!
15:34Whoa!
15:40Hear me your answer, Carlos!
15:43So, I've got to make my instrument vibrate to make my sound.
15:48But how?
15:49As I always say, behind every successful sound is a vibration.
15:58What's happening?
16:00Now what?
16:01Now!
16:07Can I look now?
16:12Hey!
16:13It's show time!
16:15Why the glasses?
16:16You heard sound.
16:17You felt sound.
16:19Now...
16:20Whoa!
16:22Carlos!
16:23What is it?
16:24I can see sound!
16:33Watch this!
16:35Look at me!
16:39Listen!
16:41Hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-hi!
16:47Hey!
16:48They're different!
16:50Yeah!
16:51When you sing...
16:54Look!
16:55There are lots of vibrations close together!
16:57But when you sing...
17:00There are fewer vibrations further apart!
17:03Oh, excellent. High sounds are made by something vibrating fast.
17:10And low by something vibrating slow.
17:15You know what? These vibrations move kind of like ripples on a pond.
17:22The waves start in one place and move out in all directions.
17:27If sound is a vibration and it moves through the air in ways,
17:31and different vibrations make different sounds,
17:37stop the vibration and you stop the sound.
17:40I've got it! It doesn't matter how my instrument looks as long as it can vibrate.
17:46D.A., I know what to do! I've got to get my instrument.
17:55It's gone!
18:03D.A.
18:12Where could it be?
18:14D.A. There's an explanation, class.
18:16The question is, what is it?
18:19D.A. First, Carlos' instrument disappears.
18:21D.A. Then each of us, one by one.
18:29There's that sound again.
18:32It's coming from him.
18:33Here!
18:40Carlos, are you all right?
18:43I'm fine.
18:44I'm just in some sort of dungeon or something.
18:47Well, if they torture you, don't tell them anything.
18:52I'll learn to be a lawyer and meet you back here when we're grown-ups.
18:56This way, Arnold.
18:58Re-ho!
19:06Coming, Arnold.
19:07We're waiting.
19:08I think I should have stayed home today.
19:14Arrgh!
19:16Thanks, Miss Frizzle.
19:18Don't mention it, Arnold.
19:19Well, Carlos, you got us into this.
19:22Any ideas how to get us out?
19:25Listen, where is he coming from?
19:29It's hard to hear exactly.
19:30Wait here.
19:35It's coming from along there.
19:37He can't go down there alone.
19:40You're right, Tisha.
19:41Why don't you go with him?
19:42Come on, you bunch of weasley wimp!
19:45Let's follow Miss Frizzle.
19:55You can see the sound waves bouncing off the walls.
19:58There.
19:59From there.
20:01From there!
20:02Sound waves bouncing.
20:04I bet that's how an echo is made.
20:08Those sound waves are traveling through that door.
20:12Good observation, Dorothy, Anne.
20:15Just so long as we don't travel through that door.
20:19No.
20:19We've got to see what it is.
20:29Hello?
20:32It was you?
20:34Wait a minute.
20:35Is it just me, or are you a...
20:37Are you...
20:38Professor Cornelia C. Contralto.
20:42The second.
20:43And that is my great-grandmother.
20:48Now listen, you've got a concert tomorrow, right?
20:53Are you ready to make your instrument sound richly resonant and resoundingly reverberate?
20:59How'd she know about Carlos' instrument?
21:02You asked the question.
21:05Let's see.
21:06Don't you mean, let's hear?
21:08Right.
21:08To make a sound, I need to make something vibrate.
21:12My instrument couldn't vibrate because there was too much stuff on it.
21:16I don't need that.
21:17Don't need that.
21:18That goes...
21:19Um, uh, that goes...
21:21I think he's got it.
21:34Ready, Carlos?
21:37Go!
21:53Carlos, that was the perfect sound.
21:57Thanks, yay.
21:58And so, young man, if it's all right with you, I would like to add that wonderful sound to my
22:06grandmother's collection.
22:08Well, I couldn't have done it without you, Dr. Contralto.
22:11As I always say, hit it, Cornelia!
22:16High dee, high dee, high dee, high dee, high dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee,
22:23low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee,
22:28low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee,
22:28low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee,
22:29low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee,
22:31low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low dee, low
22:44Magic school bus? Magic school bus? Magic school bus? Magic school bus? Magic school bus? Magic school bus? Magic school
22:52bus? I want the magic school bus! I want the magic school bus!
23:03Hello, magic school bus. Hi, are you the one responsible for that show on sound? You might say that, yes.
23:12Well, what's the deal with that house?
23:14I mean, you can never see sound. It goes way too fast. Oh, you're right. That's why they had magic
23:22glasses.
23:23I don't get something. If sound is a vibration, just what's doing the vibrating? Thin air. A sound is made
23:31when something pushes back and forth on the air and makes the air vibrate. This vibration travels through the air
23:39to your ear as a sound wave.
23:42So a loud sound is just a big vibration? Right. And a soft sound is a very tiny vibration.
23:49And what about our ears? You hardly mention them. Ears are very important. They turn sound into something our brain
23:59can handle. That's how you hear.
24:01But not everybody's ears work the same, do they? My grandmother wears a hearing aid to help her hear better.
24:08And some people can't hear anything, ever. Even with a hearing aid, they use their brains with their other senses
24:14to replace hearing.
24:16And another thing. There are lots of differences in sounds besides loudness and pitch. A violin and a saxophone sound
24:24very different, even when they're playing the same note.
24:29True. There are enough different kinds of sounds to fill the world. But we only had half an hour and
24:37we had to leave room for all those hilarious jokes.
24:41Okay. But one last thing. Yes? About that ghost. Well, that can't have been true. I mean, everybody knows there's
24:53no such thing as ghosts.
24:57Certainly not.
25:26On our Magic School Bus
25:28Rock the river of lava
25:30On the Magic School Bus
25:32Such a ride, baby
25:34So stop your bones right to the sea
25:37Come on in and don't be shy
25:39Just to make your day complete
25:41You might get baked into a pie
25:43On the Magic School Bus
25:45Stuck inside, it's so wild to ride
25:48Right on the Magic School Bus
