Are Lions' fans interested a trade that involves Sam LaPorta?
Transcript
00:00all right uh proposed trade this is eric at home on nfl.com uh he points out that you know
00:08come
00:08draft day there's a flurry of significant action on draft day and he's he's got he said we've
00:14averaged five or six deals involving first rounders the past few years similar activity
00:19could be on tap next month so we put together some trades when you're good about five or six
00:24big trades on draft day the washington commanders who sit at seven in the draft
00:33send the pick at seven their third round pick next year and tight end ben sanat
00:43to detroit for the pick at 17
00:49a sixth round pick this year and tight end sam laporta oh so the lions would move up 10 spots
01:02they get a third rounder next year and a tight end who cost almost nothing on the cap
01:10for their pick at 17 their six round pick and sam laporta and he writes george kill and trey mcbride
01:20reset the tight end market last off season with extensions that will pay them 19 million plus
01:25per year can the lions afford to pay laporta close to that level remember they also must pay
01:28unless all the free agents we know about right so it's hard to imagine why the commanders it's not
01:33hard to imagine why the commanders will want laporta especially with david blau who is detroit's
01:37practice squad quarterback laporta's rookie year calling plays washington should still find a
01:43receiver defensive help at number 17 uh he goes on to write that at seven why would detroit move up
01:51to seven i suspect to acquire a foundational tackle that position is the biggest remaining worry and
01:57their guy might not last until 17 it would be a big risk but a potentially smart one financially
02:03and football wise and brad holmes has never shied away from making waves in round one
02:09okay that's a really interesting trade because when you hear the draft capital you know when he's
02:14on the first and the sixth then oh but sam laporta who is valued as what would be a first
02:19round pick
02:19i'm sure if sam laporta were available you know what he is would you spend a first round pick on
02:24him
02:24yeah i think i think teams would um so that becomes washington's issue about an extension
02:31not the lions they save money uh and what's the cost basically you're just giving up you're giving
02:38up sam laporta to move up in the draft now it's seven who could be available to you if you
02:46want
02:46secondary help could caleb downs be available at seven if you want an edge rusher ruben bain could be
02:55available at seven you want the best tackle is it francis muillaga from miami quite frankly you
03:03could probably have any tackle you wanted at seven i you know i mean if if margo is there i'd
03:10be great
03:10otherwise spencer fano is widely considered the second best or bonroe freeling yep uh if you don't
03:17want to take a chance and then go ahead and grab that but what you're getting in ben sanat is
03:22a third
03:22year tight end who counts 1.42 million against the cap and last year had all of 11 receptions for
03:29114
03:30yards and a touchdown they didn't really use their tight ends much last year zach kurtz was their number
03:34one tight end last year and i think sanat was number two with just that few receptions but um if
03:41he's a
03:41guy that it's a blocking tight end i don't mind that and i can i can draft another tight end
03:46it's an
03:48it's an interesting proposal it would be an aggressive move it would be more of a win now
03:54move right i mean to well is it feels like it you're going to get a guy that helps you
04:00win now
04:00but you are giving up on sam laporta now when will laporta be back and what will he be and
04:06long term
04:08we we used to talk about a fictional world and i mean for the bulk of our careers where the
04:13lions
04:14were good and had to move lose good players because they couldn't afford them i remember
04:18we'd have these talks when some player would become available and we like oh my god why is he available
04:22well cap issues because that good organization is having cap issues where we might be that team now
04:27that is looking to unload good players to try and keep better players and maintain some roster
04:36flexibility so if on the lions i make this trade all day long um because i'm in back of my
04:42mind i'm
04:43i'm thinking about should i move on from laporta anyway because you're gonna have to make the
04:48decision do you want to give me extension or not because he's entering year four and he was a
04:53second round pick so the last year he's coming off an injury coming off back surgery i could absolutely
04:59easily talk myself i would do this if i were the lions if i were washington i would not because
05:05if
05:05i'm washington why don't i just take draft kenyan sadiq at seven you could could and then i have my
05:13tight end i haven't had to give up any kind of draft capital to do it yeah i suppose that
05:18that would
05:18i mean i is they get more draft capital i don't know but they give up their third round pick
05:24next
05:25year i don't know kang would you do this would you make this move oh man is laporta's back like
05:31kirby joseph's knee because of it tackle is more important than tight end straight up and especially
05:37for this detroit lions team which is built basically when they're good from the inside out and i'm not
05:43treating jared golf like some make-a-wish kid like a lot of people are but he doesn't need protection
05:48no they treat him like that right they do they think like he needs everything absolutely perfect for
05:53him to perform and that's just not true now maybe i went a little over the top there but but
06:02the
06:02point is he does need protection he does need some time okay and you need that through the offensive
06:07line and so yes with that being said i would make the deal to get the top tackle on the
06:12board and i
06:12think he'd be there at seven whoever that you know whoever dan campbell and brad holmes like the most
06:17i mean i don't know i just saw a mock draft from uh uh who's the guy ash the athletic
06:24could just
06:25add this one out dame brugler um it's actually from uh bruce feldman okay and his has malgo going
06:33at number six to cleveland here's the argument against making this trade i like this tackle class
06:43i like this i think you can get a starting caliber tackle at 17 i hope i can yep there's
06:50no guarantees no but the problem is there are i like the tackle class for a for a few of
06:55these guys
06:55and then it becomes a little bit of taking a gamble is there going to be a run on tackles
07:00before the
07:00lions get there between spencer fanu monroe freeling caden proctor those all feel like
07:11guys that are plug and play i'm not convinced max ahana chair from arizona state isn't i'm not
07:17convinced that blake miller from clemson isn't i'm not convinced the other dude from utah lomo isn't
07:22like there's there's a it feels to me like there is a ton of tackle talent out there and so
07:30you don't
07:31have to move up to get the best in the draft because the difference between the best and the next
07:36guy
07:36isn't so significant in my opinion but yeah the other tough thing is now because if you're going
07:43to move all the way up to seven then that opens the door for the other guys you mentioned reuben
07:48bain
07:48and opens it up for sure perhaps uh you know sunny styles or caleb down caleb downs would be hard
07:56to
07:56pass answer the lane the first corner that could come off the board these are also very intriguing
08:05players yeah something to think about right yeah interesting proposal would you do it people
08:11248-539-9797 lions move up to seven and give up their pick at 17 a six-round pick and
08:19sam laporta
