00:00Good morning. Happy Friday 30 minutes away from the cookie jar
00:04talking best nicknames in all of sports after someone's trying to steal a local legends nickname
00:10will pit Spartans and Wolverines against each other again
00:14and more good stuff. It's all coming up 735. Let's start with the great stuff
00:22Tigers Kevin McGonigal as much as we built this guy up John like hey this is skipping
00:28triple-a and rarefied air and he's gonna make the club right away if he got one hit in his
00:35first
00:36game we would have celebrated sure hey job well done he does it in his first step out on the
00:42first
00:42pitch he ever sees if his night ends there and he goes one for four hell yeah this Kevin McGonigal
00:47guy's gonna be something yeah or if he if he does that and draws a walk hey plate discipline there
00:52you go his second at bat is another double hit even harder nearly a home run and scores
00:59more offense and if his day ends there you go damn two hits couple doubles we got ourselves a guy
01:08then he gets a third hit where he flashes the wheels down the first baseline
01:12and a fourth hit for good measure if you were wondering boys is there too much hype around this
01:17guy could he possibly live up to this for one game he validated all the hype instant validation
01:23what we saw from Kevin McGonigal yeah and it's it's every single one of them a quality at bat
01:28obviously you end up with a double we're gonna sit there and talk about a quality at bat but
01:33it's it he's picking out good pitches he's making great contact and you you mentioned it like
01:39just the numbers on the one that almost went out it was an absolute smoker 106 miles an hour
01:45off the bat and it and almost no air it was this straight line drive and muscled it
01:51look for a guy who's in his early 20s he is he's looking like like he's a seasoned pro right
01:58now
01:58yeah and there will be we say this because we know we've watched enough baseball he'll have a slump
02:04or two this year he'll go through a stretch or a rut but to start this way to alleviate any
02:11of
02:11the nerves i thought aj had a great one-liner like if this is how nervous this guy is yeah
02:15just imagine when he gets comfortable yeah this was aj after the game
02:39i mean there's no question it did um and and the amount of excitement going into the game i mentioned
02:45it already hey when when he was up to bat like everything in the house stopped you were listening
02:50a little pregame about um you know aj talking about mcgonagall and yeah and one of the things
02:55that he was talking about was you know he was given all the reasons why he put him in the
02:57sixth spot
02:58right he's he's he's good enough to be able to be behind those guys because he thinks those guys will
03:02get on and and you know mcgonagall can can knock some of them in and he didn't want to put
03:06him in the
03:06eight or nine spot because he's just a better hitter than that and and then he ended it with you
03:11know
03:11at some point this year you know we believe he'll move himself up in the order well why not tonight
03:19i was i was yesterday and earlier this week i was like hey why not put him in the top
03:23three
03:25right go ahead move him up get him get him as many ab's as possible
03:30the idea that he's one of the best hitters on this team is i don't feel like an overreaction
03:36that's his profile that's what he's here to do who he's here to be and if they want to ease
03:41him into it i i respect it sure and but but that's what he's supposed to be i think maybe
03:47the
03:47thing i'm most excited about is that instead of aj having to hide batters in the lineup and and you
03:56know okay you still may have to hide um parker meadows at times you may have to hide javi
04:02but you don't have to play both every day no and and and but now it's last year when we
04:09were
04:09talking about wouldn't it be nice if aj just knew he had a leadoff hitter that could be his leadoff
04:14hitter every time or somebody that just always hit in the three spots somebody that was always a
04:18cleanup because it didn't matter what it was and maybe aj's never going to be that guy because he
04:23likes to play the matchups he likes to tinker with the lineup but to actually know that you've got a
04:29guy hey mcgonigal no matter where he's playing in the field he's going to be in the top three right
04:35we talk about it from a standpoint of if mcgonigal left-handed bat can hit lefties and righties you
04:41play them every day you're looking to see guys like um colt keith young batter lefty can he hit
04:46righties and lefties if if you know riley green's an all-star if you get to the point where you
04:50got
04:50all these guys that you can say oh they're playing every day every day not because we don't have
04:55another option but because they've developed into all you know well-rounded batters that's a great
05:00situation for a manager right and and it's again it's one game it's one one opportunity from kevin
05:07mcgonigal we we understand all of that but we do have as tigers fans were last night if you were
05:12anywhere on social media or just around town everyone was talking about kevin mcgonigal and
05:19the tigers and what did we say yesterday there's a lot of ifs if cold keith if spencer torkelson if
05:25riley green and certainly if kevin mcgonigal but if some of those are actually true think about this
05:33offense yesterday eight runs yeah 12 hits and and being active with runners in scoring position
05:42just think if that is a trait of this offense you pair that with the pitching staff that they put
05:47together um yeah you start getting texts like this is it too early to plan the parade down woodward
05:56uh we asked you for overreactions after one game you could focus on mcgonigal skuble
06:02keith dingler well there i don't think there could be any overreactions for terek skuble
06:07no i don't okay maybe the overreaction is is he ever going to have an earned run this year
06:11or the answer is yes he will or and i didn't hear this but tom people are calling rieger calling
06:17him soft because he only threw 73 pitches yeah i was pretty stunned i was listening to him after the
06:21game yesterday and uh a lot of people were texting in or calling in and saying why do you only
06:26go
06:2674 pitches why do you only go six innings all right tommy tough guys out there like it's the first
06:31game
06:31of the season deliteration i know it's the first game of the season there's no reason to throw extra
06:39innings there when you're up six runs oh right so but the argument is okay you save the arm when
06:47you
06:47can't yeah but you're hoping to be able to use it when you need it well okay and that's a
06:51different
06:51conversation okay but it's a conversation we had all off season no i know but it's people still hung
06:56up and maybe you'll never be over last year and you'll get over it when they win the alds with
07:02skuble on the mound and he comes out for the seventh inning but the time to like put the screws
07:07to him isn't the first start of the year when they're on six runs and he's cruising look we can
07:13spend
07:13some time on it i don't want to dwell on it but people that are hung up on it are
07:17wild to me i'm
07:18rallying around this dude he's got the ball he's he's a he's a bulldog out there i mean he didn't
07:23walk anybody he's challenging every single batter he went into the sixth up ate nothing i actually was
07:31a little surprised that he pitched in the six i thought this was an opportunity for them to you know
07:35hey take him out and put in anderson put in any of the arms that they want to get broken
07:42in
07:42that have we haven't seen it's just a disconnect i have with the section of the fan base
07:47i am rallying around him while we've got him he is one of if not the best arm in all
07:52of baseball
07:53this team's best chance to world series to win a world series is on the back of his left arm
07:59so i'm gonna rally around him and hope for the best possible final year because i've accepted it's
08:04his last year here but i i'm going to rally around the idea that he can drive them there and
08:09not
08:09sit there and bitch and moan about every time he doesn't throw 100 pitches in the regular season
08:13right and i mean i'm hey i'm the one that started here with calling him soft it's your fault and
08:19that
08:19was not coming out when they wanted when we needed him most did we need him in the sixth inning
08:27or the
08:27seventh inning of the first game where he's going into the six with an eight nothing lead no if it
08:33was
08:34one one maybe i would have a different opinion maybe yeah but i'm not sitting there going hey
08:41he's got to get to 85 pitches in game one with an eight nothing lead that's dumb most pitch counts
08:47are managed the first three four starts of the year by virtually every single pitcher in baseball
08:51yeah you'll see it with the other guys the rest of this week oh yeah text says scoobal equals good
08:57green equals bad let's focus on getting the correct person off the team trade green
09:052026 that's eric in tc another says overreaction more of the same from riley the swings looks even
09:12longer and more uppercut if you saw riley's at bats beyond the first you know he's going to go for
09:19another 200 strikeout season he worked a 3-1 count only to swing at three straight balls
09:27that's the takeaway is riley green's going back in the tank
09:31random thought about the new strike zone and the challenge system clearly it's a much
09:36smaller strike zone in my professional fan opinion i believe torkelson will make a huge jump this year
09:42he's always had a good eye and can lay off the high heat what other tigers do you guys think
09:46would
09:46benefit most from this new system dj at work well i mean it may be the perfect timing for kevin
09:53mcgonigle if he's got the eye and the plate discipline that you know scott harris has talked
09:58about then he may be a benefit from it torque i think is another guy how about glaber torres yeah
10:05torres is we talked about last year probably the most professional hitter on the team yeah
10:09and smaller strike zone and barreling stuff up and punishing pitches over the plate
10:14let's call this season the chronicles of mcgonigles
10:21wasn't a no um i know it's just one game but is it possible that scoobal unlocked another level
10:26of the season i can't remember him pitching that effectively to contact in the past
10:32game five took him 99 pitches to get through six innings he only needed 73
10:38i mean i thought i thought he did a great job yesterday i'm not gonna i'm not gonna over
10:43analyze tarik scoobal on game one okay and and i did this when we when we came this morning like
10:48okay what was start one last year seattle was a loss so he won the first one this year so
10:54okay
10:54is he better than last year through one start sure i think it's just looking at the looking at
11:00again seeing the effectiveness of scoobal and seeing it's only six innings i i think it's just
11:06conjuring up those bad memories and fans these fans that are calling up jeff and that are texting into
11:11our show today are just like oh my god not this again really if we can have the run production
11:17that they had early in the game yesterday throughout the course of the year do i want to see any
11:23of the
11:24pitchers go deep into games because what's the one thing that can derail this season major arm
11:30events from high level starting pitching right so if you don't have to risk it yeah in the six or
11:35the seventh if you've got an eight nothing lead that's also why they brought in kenley jansen to
11:39put with finnegan and will vest like they have options and to your point if they've got more than
11:45a couple run lead you can pitch drew anderson or put someone with the mop-up duty out there if
11:50if
11:50they've got a problem to have eight runs through five innings today do i want valdez to go out there
11:56in
11:56the seventh if he's got a similar pitch count no kick your feet up buddy you did the job
12:02but i think it is specifically this tarik scuble the wool was you know lifted off of our eyes as
12:08hey this guy doesn't really pitch 100 pitches plus in a game no but to the texter's point if he
12:15was
12:15less efficient and missed and sprayed the zone and threw 15 more pitches at the end of the sixth
12:22inning we go he's pushing 100 it's the opener and get him out of there but because he was efficient
12:28and it was you know under 75 pitches some people want to get up in arms but i don't know
12:33i feel like
12:33we've already wasted too much time giving that oxygen but the thing is that i feel like his
12:39efficiency is necessary because of his lack of ability to go deep in games
12:48when we get to the playoffs or we get to the end of the season and it's got to have
12:52it to win the
12:53division got to have it to move on to the alcs i'll have those conversations then as we did last
12:59year still some room on the phones to talk tiger baseball good text that we're going to read coming
13:03up next cookie jar at 7 35 it's 97 one
