00:28That's not Tarek Scooball.
00:30I'm glad he was consulting with his agent.
00:32I will say, nobody wants to hear that you talk with Boris about any baseball on the field decisions.
00:36I don't want to hear that.
00:37I don't like that at all.
00:39Also, anybody else here of Boogie Nights being played in the background?
00:43Was it Boogie Nights?
00:44Boogie Nights by Heat Wave.
00:45Ain't no doubt we are here to party.
00:47Boogie Nights, come on out.
00:48Got to get this started.
00:50Dance with the boogie.
00:51No?
00:52Anyone just made it?
00:53I don't even know that song.
00:54That was Boogie Nights in the background.
00:56Is that an old song?
00:57Yeah.
00:58I don't know.
00:59Sorry, my bad.
01:00Yes, very old.
01:01It's not my wheelhouse.
01:02I'm sorry.
01:03Well, what you were growing up on, I was growing up on a different kind of music.
01:06And Boogie Nights by Heat Wave.
01:09Great song.
01:10Here's the Aaron Judge comments.
01:12He was asked about Team USA and the Yankees.
01:16How did the World Baseball Classic atmosphere compare to that of a World Series?
01:20And this might not be the quote you were talking about, but Judge says, it's been bigger.
01:25The World Series I was in, the crowd here, the crowd we had when we played Mexico, it's
01:30bigger and better than the World Series.
01:32The passion these fans have representing their country, representing their favorite players,
01:36there's nothing like it.
01:36That's what you dream of as a kid.
01:39It gives me chills right now thinking about how special it was.
01:41Now, I don't know if he said somewhere else he'd rather win the World Baseball Classic
01:44because if he said, I'd rather win the World Baseball Classic than the World Series, he
01:49might get chump votes in New York during their 10-2 show.
01:53Do you think that would play even worse than anything Scooble did in a town?
01:58It should.
01:59Yeah.
01:59Yeah.
02:00No, I believe what I said on the air, I hope what I said was there, and he said it's
02:03better.
02:04I don't know if I said that he said that he'd rather than that would be speaking erroneously.
02:10I don't think that's what he said.
02:11But what he said there in that quote, that the atmosphere is better, I still think it's
02:19kind of crazy.
02:19Is it a crazy atmosphere there?
02:21Yeah.
02:21It's nuts.
02:21It's wild.
02:22But, I mean, you're just winning the World Baseball Classic.
02:26You're not winning the World Series.
02:29Kang, you have a finger on the pulse.
02:31You're busy with something.
02:32I'll get to you in a minute.
02:33Let's go to Greg in Bloomfield Hills.
02:35You're on 97.1.
02:35Hi, Greg.
02:37How are you?
02:37What's up?
02:38You know, as a fan, I don't really give a crap about the American Baseball Classic and
02:43Scooble's on a one-year contract.
02:45The fact that he played one game shows that he was doing a little PR work, but he shouldn't
02:52blow his nose without talking to Scott Forrest.
02:55He's a professional with hundreds of millions at stake.
02:59Why risk everything for this when a lot of fans don't care about this?
03:03Okay.
03:03No, hold on.
03:04Let me ask you a question.
03:05What if you heard that Scott Forrest is the one that had Scooble not going back out for
03:10the seventh inning in Seattle?
03:13Well, you know what?
03:14That would be unusual.
03:15Yes, but you just said he shouldn't blow his nose without talking to Scott Forrest.
03:19I want Scott Forrest nowhere near baseball decisions for Scooble.
03:24Well, who knows if he was feeling tight that week, but you know what?
03:28When you have that kind of money at stake in your whole career, and you think Scooble would
03:34have said, you know what?
03:34I'm feeling fabulous.
03:35I'm going to take myself out of the game.
03:37I doubt it.
03:38I really do.
03:39Okay, I'll just say this.
03:40Understanding, I'm reacting, and maybe I'm holding you too accountable for literally
03:44what you said about he shouldn't blow his nose without talking to Scott Forrest.
03:48I don't want him picking up the cell phone at the end of the sixth inning and texting
03:53Forrest, hey, should I go back out there?
03:56And that's what, when you say that, that's what I take.
04:00That's valid.
04:01That's valid.
04:01Well, but in general, as a professional, and with all the legal complexities there, and
04:07as a lawyer, you don't want clients making mistakes.
04:11And Boris is paid to avoid mistakes.
04:15So, you know, trust me, his advice is valuable.
04:21Well, it is, but at the same time, you can understand why he's going to rub pants the wrong
04:24way if he's going to sit there and talk to his agent about everything.
04:27And, look, it's an attorney thing, I get it, but I would have a real issue if he was talking
04:35with Scott Forrest about anything that has to do with baseball other than my contract.
04:38Trumping A.J.
04:39Hinch's decisions.
04:40I didn't, maybe I shouldn't get so wrapped up in literally what the caller said, but.
04:47It's like the major league.
04:49When Dorn walks up to the skip and shows him his contract.
04:54It's in my contract.
04:55I can't take ground balls at third base.
04:57Or whatever.
04:59And then he throws the contract on the ground and undoes his pants and urinates on the contract.
05:05Yeah, the manager.
05:07The scuba angst, it's growing.
05:09This is from Scott.
05:10The scuba angst, it's growing.
05:11Right or wrong.
05:12It's not about how it is.
05:14It's about how it looks.
05:16Then there's the sixth inning playoff effort.
05:18Then there's his contract.
05:20Boris, it all adds up.
05:22I hope we get past it.
05:23I'm not sure.
05:24I'm so tired of this sixth inning thing.
05:27In 99 pitches through six innings, he struck out 13 batters.
05:32He gave everything to get those outs.
05:35He'd given up one run through those six innings.
05:3713 strikeouts.
05:38That's two an inning.
05:40Plus.
05:41I mean, 13 strikeouts is 13 of the 18 outs.
05:43It's insane.
05:44The ball was not put in play.
05:46When they came out in the seventh inning, the ball went into the hands of Kyle Finnegan, who had pitched
05:50great for the Tigers.
05:53And he got a couple outs early and then struggled a bit.
05:56And then they bring in Tyler Holden, who had been pretty good for the Tigers.
06:00Those guys are the ones that failed.
06:02Not Tarek Scoble.
06:05I mean, hey, you want to have that guy that goes out there and throws 120 pitches.
06:09Great.
06:09But he just threw 99.
06:11Was he going to start pitch number 100 in the seventh?
06:13What I also think is strange is that I feel like, if anything, I interpret Scoble's behavior with the World
06:19Baseball Classic, which remembers what got him chump of the weekend, as being more beholden to our team in Detroit.
06:28Detroit, I'm going to do my normal spring training routine as much as I can.
06:33He went back to the Tigers, got to start with the Tigers, and kept his normal spring training ramp up
06:41intact as much as he can.
06:43He didn't want to disrupt it.
06:45That, to me, is putting the most important thing here first, and that is the Detroit Tigers.
06:52I think some people are put off by the wishy-washiness of it, because he was in, then he was
06:58out, and he said, oh, maybe I'll come back and pitch another one, and then he decided, no, I'm not
07:01going to.
07:02But what's weird about that to me, and I'm not arguing with you, I'm just bringing a point.
07:06It's how I feel.
07:07We all change our minds on things all the time, and his changing his mind about being back in or
07:12back out, it's not like Team USA goes, oh, great, now we don't have a starter.
07:16They've got somebody else who can pitch.
07:17It's no tangible way does it hurt Team USA.
07:22No, there are two things I think come out of this.
07:25I mentioned earlier that I think there are some players on Team USA that will probably resent him for not
07:30pitching anymore in that tournament, because they want to win it, for sure.
07:35And as this thing has gone on, it's just built and built and built, and everybody wants to be part
07:40of it now.
07:42And I think the other thing is, I think Tarek Skubal is going to regret not committing to Team USA
07:47for the entire tournament.
07:48Kind of a different topic, but he might.
07:50Right, but those are two things that are going to come out of it.
07:52And I think when all of a sudden, after tonight's game, they're going to interview players, and if Skubal is
07:56interviewed, I bet I'm not going to be at all surprised to hear him say, yeah, I mean, I sat
08:01out for my own reasons.
08:03He already has committed for the next one, he said.
08:05He's like, whatever the next one is, I'm in.
08:08He's already like, yeah, because it'll be after he has his contract, which is what people will say.
08:11Yeah, whatever it is, but he said that he's back.
08:15Whenever it is, 20-20, whatever, he wants in, and he regrets it.
08:18But the thing about changing his mind, yes, Doug, he can absolutely change his mind.
08:20But he's not helping the team in any way by showing up now.
08:25Do you think they need his moral support in the dugout or anything?
08:28He's just there because I think he feels like he missed out, and he wants to be...
08:31The only help he gives is if he's got a knowledge of the Venezuelan hitters and says, this is how
08:38I used to get this guy out.
08:39And he wants to lend some of that expertise.
08:42Feedback to the Carson Anderson inbox, and you can send us text messages for people new to the show at
08:47248-539-9797.
08:50This is from an unnamed texter.
08:52Let him get his contract.
08:54Calm down, people.
08:55You'd do the exact same thing, and I think every single person in the world would, too.
09:01Richard in Birmingham.
09:02Well, see, here's why you know that's not true, is there are other pitchers that are pitching more.
09:08Now, maybe it's a moot point because they don't have the contract looming.
09:13I think the fans are just exhausted with the whole Scooble side show slash circus.
09:18Enough.
09:19Richard in Birmingham.
09:20Unnamed texter.
09:21The coward didn't want to come back out in a winner-take-all game, and you expect them to play
09:25in the World Baseball Classic?
09:28I don't know why you call him a coward.
09:30If the guy gave it what he had.
09:32What we don't know, you can't be in his body to feel what his arm and his body felt like
09:36in that moment.
09:37Right, and how different it is to, okay, if you thought that you're going to be done after this inning,
09:41you leave it all out on the table, you throw your last pitch is 100 miles an hour, whatever it
09:44was, and you come out and you have that emotional dump, and then you sit on a bench, and, you
09:52know, who knows how your body feels after you've sat on the bench, and now you're going to go out
09:56for another inning after you've completely exhausted yourself?
10:00I get it.
10:01It's 99, and this is a different game now that they play than what they played 10 years ago or
10:0615 years ago, okay?
10:07I understand all that, but it is a different game.
10:11You can't hold them to the standard of somebody else and how somebody else feels in their own body constitution.
10:16People want to look at the Dodgers and what those pitchers did in the World Series.
10:20Now, they kept coming back after a couple days' rest or whatever, or they did it once, and everybody's amazed
10:25with it, and sure, it is.
10:26And that's all hands on deck when you get in that situation.
10:29This was game five of a divisional series.
10:31You and I go out drinking, right?
10:33And we wake up the next morning, and you are hungover and don't feel good, and I feel fine.
10:38Why?
10:39I don't know.
10:40I have no idea, but this happens.
10:42So some pitchers, some days feel better than the end of the day.
10:45You should reverse that.
10:47Okay, you and I go out drinking.
10:48We wake up the next day.
10:49I am hungover.
10:51I can barely get out of bed.
10:52You pop out of bed and walk the dog.
10:54No big deal for you.
10:56All right, this story is all kinds of wrong.
10:58You walk in the dog, is this thing?
11:01But sometimes, like the Dodgers.
11:03It sounds eerily similar to a trip to Traverse City.
11:05I don't know what we're talking about.
11:07That was not my finest moment.
11:09Anyway, the point is, some pitchers feel better.
11:12Some feel need more time.
11:14We can't be in his body to know how he felt in that moment.
11:18But I feel like this is going to get litigated forever, just like the blown San Francisco
11:23NFC Championship game.
11:25And when he signs a free agent contract in the offseason with some other team, it's 100%
11:29going to be brought up.
11:30One of the first batch of calls we'll take is, oh, good.
11:33Yeah.
11:33Let that team deal with him not wanting to pitch in the seventh inning.
11:36They're still trying to win a World Series because of this man's presence on our roster.
11:40Yes.
11:40If he weren't on this roster, this team would have no shot.
11:4297-1.
