00:00I will have much to do after I kill you.
00:02Face me, father. It is time to end this.
00:06Yes, my son.
00:07Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're counting down those fights that made you think,
00:11ugh, this feels good.
00:12These are the 20 most satisfying boss fights in video games.
00:16Let's have a very satisfying look.
00:18Before we continue, we publish content all week long,
00:21so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:27Shadow of the Colossus.
00:35A few opening bosses make an entrance quite like Valus in Shadow of the Colossus.
00:39This entry isn't satisfying because it feels good to kill Valus,
00:43and not because he deserves it,
00:44but because the game and mechanics tickle your brain in a way it had never been tickled,
00:48at least back in 2005.
00:49One minute, Wanderer is standing in a quiet valley.
00:52The next, an enormous creature is stomping past like a walking mountain with anger issues.
00:56The music swells, the scale becomes clear,
00:58and players quickly realize the only way to win is by climbing directly onto him.
01:03Valus is not especially complicated once his route is understood.
01:06Grab his leg, work upward, and drive the sword into his weak points before stamina runs out.
01:10Reaching the top still feels fantastic,
01:14especially after dodging his hammer and avoiding becoming wonder-shaped paste.
01:18Later, Colossi may offer tougher battles,
01:20but Valus remains memorable as the moment the game introduces its giants and its concept.
01:38Luka Blight, Sukaden 2
01:47Okay, now let's talk about satisfying beatdowns.
01:51By the time Luka Blight finally falls in Sukaden 2,
01:54players have spent hours waiting for someone to shut him up permanently.
01:57The game leaves no room for sympathy.
01:59Luka massacres civilians,
02:01destroys villagers,
02:02and treats cruelty like a competitive sport,
02:04including forcing one terrified woman to act like a pig before killing her anyway.
02:08Naturally, defeating him requires far more than a normal boss fight.
02:11He is struck by arrows,
02:13battles three different parties,
02:14survives an ambush,
02:15and keeps charging through the forest while soaked in blood.
02:17Only then does the hero face him in a final duel.
02:21The sheer effort needed proves Luka really is the monster everyone feared.
02:25Watching an entire army slowly wear him down makes his defeat enormously satisfying.
02:41The Lich King World of Warcraft
02:49Players had to wait more than five years to properly settle the score with Arthas.
02:54After Warcraft 3, the Frozen Throne placed him on the Frozen Throne,
02:57his story finally continued in World of Warcraft, Wrath of the Lich King.
03:02The expansion teases several encounters with him,
03:04but the real showdown is saved for Ice Crown Citadel.
03:07It was worth the delay.
03:09One mistake could destroy an entire raid,
03:11while phases like being pulled inside Frostmourne
03:14made the battle feel far bigger than a normal damage check.
03:17Players even had to help King Terranus from within the sword
03:19or risk making Arthas stronger,
03:21because apparently the fight needed extra stress.
03:23Heroic difficulty became legendary,
03:25and although higher level caps have made him easier today,
03:28that first victory still feels enormous.
03:31There must always be a Lich King.
03:39Mr. Freeze, Batman Arkham City
03:48Impressive, Batman.
03:49I doubted you would actually return.
03:52I'm a man of my word, Victor.
03:54Batman Arkham Asylum delivered a brilliant adventure,
03:57but many of its bosses felt like slight variations of the same oversized punching bag.
04:02Rocksteady clearly took that criticism personally when creating Batman Arkham City,
04:06especially with the Mr. Freeze battle.
04:09Charging in and repeating one reliable move will not work here.
04:13After every successful attack,
04:14Freeze adjusts his suit so that that method can't hurt him again.
04:18Batman must cycle through gadgets, environmental traps,
04:21stealth attacks, and basically every trick collected during the game.
04:23Meanwhile, Freeze patrols the room and fires ice blasts that can end the fight quickly.
04:28Batman has never made punches feel so good.
04:44For most of Hollow Knight,
04:46the true source of hollowness suffering remains hidden behind the Hollow Knight itself.
04:49Defeating that tragic warrior is already difficult,
04:52but using the dream nail reveals the radiance waiting beyond it,
04:56the ancient god responsible for the infection.
04:58The battle tests everything learned across the game,
05:01filling the arena with beams, spikes, swords,
05:03and increasingly dangerous platforming.
05:06Victory feels satisfying because the Knight is not simply defeating another powerful enemy.
05:10It's finally confronting the force that destroyed an entire kingdom
05:13and trapped countless characters in misery.
05:16It's satisfying in a hollow nutshell.
05:29This cold, white substance falling slowly from the heavens.
05:33Snow, they call it.
05:35Look carefully upon each fleck.
05:37Escaping the underworld in Hades is hard enough
05:40without Zagreus' father standing at the exit like the world's angriest security guard.
05:44Hades attacks with huge spear swings,
05:46summons extra enemies, scatters exploding skulls,
05:49and then reveals a second health bar just when players think the end is in sight.
05:53Early attempts can feel hopeless,
05:55but each failed run improves Zagreus' abilities
05:57while teaching the player how the fight works.
06:00Eventually,
06:01Hades' most frightening moves become openings for a quick dash and counterattack.
06:05Winning feels earned because both character and player have grown stronger.
06:09It also forces Hades to recognize that his son is not completely hopeless
06:13and that I am, like, actually, like, a super strong dad, seriously.
06:18Ah, brat.
06:23I hope you...
06:27Jubileus Bayonetta
06:35Subtlety was never invited to the final battle of Bayonetta.
06:39After Father Baldur revives Jubileus and uses Bayonetta to restore the deity's power,
06:45Jean arrives just in time to pull her rival free
06:47and prevent the universe from turning into dust.
06:49What follows is pure Platinum Games chaos.
06:52Much of the fight takes place inside a gigantic glowing sphere in outer space,
06:56with Jubileus throwing enormous attacks
06:58while Bayonetta answers using acrobatics, magic, and absolutely no restraint.
07:02The finale somehow goes even further.
07:04Bayonetta summons Queen Sheba,
07:06who punches Jubileus directly into the sun and burns her to pieces.
07:09Plenty of games end with a dramatic showdown,
07:11but very few let players launch a god into a star.
07:14It's so anime.
07:15It's so Bayonetta.
07:24Shao Kahn Mortal Kombat
07:27Our penalty is clear.
07:36Few victories in Mortal Kombat feel better than seeing Shao Kahn finally get what's coming to him.
07:42The game spends hours presenting him as an unstoppable bully,
07:45complete with brutal strengths, endless taunts,
07:48and a hammer that removes most of your health whenever it feels like ruining your evening.
07:52His boss fight only adds to the hatred.
07:54Kahn shrugs off attacks, hits absurdly hard,
07:56and often encourages players to abandon dignity in favor of cheap tactics.
08:01Once Raiden defeats him, however, the frustration becomes completely worth it.
08:05There's no emotional speech or last-minute redemption.
08:07The Elder Gods simply rip Shao Kahn apart while Raiden watches.
08:12Anything gentler wouldn't have been very Mortal Kombat.
08:28Melania Elden Ring
08:38Melania in Elden Ring is fast, heals whenever her attacks connect,
08:43and can erase full health bars with Waterfowl Dance before most players understand what's happening.
08:48Reaching her second phase only makes things worse,
08:51as she transforms into the Goddess of Rot
08:52and begins covering the arena with Scarlet Rot Explosions.
08:56Every failed attempt slowly teaches better timing,
08:59better positioning, and when to stop attacking like an overexcited idiot.
09:03I'm talking about me.
09:04Eventually, the impossible-looking moves become readable,
09:07and one final strike ends the nightmare.
09:09Beating any hard boss in a Souls game is going to be satisfying,
09:13and if they're all mountains,
09:14Melania isn't Everest,
09:15she's that giant mountain on Mars that everyone always talks about.
09:27GLaDOS PORTAL
09:28Was it worth it?
09:29Because despite your violent behavior,
09:32the only thing you've managed to break so far is my heart.
09:35By the time Shell reaches GLaDOS in PORTAL,
09:37the polite computer voice has dropped the illusion,
09:40and revealed that she certainly isn't your buddy.
09:42The promised cake was a lie.
09:44The testing chambers were deadly,
09:45and the attempted incineration made her intentions pretty obvious.
09:49That makes the final confrontation satisfying
09:52before players even begin dismantling her.
09:54Shell has no traditional weapons,
09:56so defeating GLaDOS means using Aperture's own machinery against her
09:59and removing the personality cores attached to the main body.
10:02Each core thrown into the incinerator makes GLaDOS more frantic,
10:06while the countdown keeps the pressure high.
10:08It's very satisfying.
10:19Handsome Jack Borderlands 2
10:26Silencing Handsome Jack is almost more rewarding
10:29than killing the warrior in Borderlands 2.
10:31The entire game, he floods the player's radio
10:34with insults, smug jokes, and speeches
10:36about how he is somehow the real hero.
10:37Meanwhile, he murders Roland, exploits Angel,
10:40and causes enough misery to make the game look slightly questionable.
10:44A smackdown was coming the entire game.
10:46Once the warrior falls, Jack is left injured, but still talking,
10:50desperately explaining how history will prove him right.
10:53Then the game offers the perfect ending.
10:55The Vault Hunter can finish him personally,
10:57or let Lilith handle it.
10:59There's no escape plan, monstrous final form,
11:01or emotional redemption.
11:02Jack simply loses and is finally forced to,
11:05and I say this with extra stank on it,
11:07shut the f*** up.
11:08Goddamn hero!
11:11The warrior was practically a god.
11:14How?
11:15How in the hell have you killed my warrior?
11:18Kamoshida Persona 5
11:29Few villains earn the player's hatred as quickly
11:32as Suguru, Kamoshida, and Persona 5.
11:35He abuses his authority, terrorizes students,
11:39mistreats the volleyball team,
11:40and drives Shiho to attempt suicide.
11:43Worse still, the adults around him protect his reputation,
11:45or simply look away.
11:46Entering his palace, therefore,
11:48feels less like ordinary dungeon crawling,
11:50and more like finally doing something
11:51everyone else refused to do.
11:53His monstrous shadow form exposes exactly how he sees himself,
11:56a crowned king surrounded by disposable servants.
11:59The fight is lengthy, theatrical,
12:02and deeply personal,
12:03with the payoff extending beyond beating a boss.
12:06Kamoshida loses his power, his image,
12:08and the silence that allowed him to keep hurting people.
12:11Screw that guy.
12:12So stop touching it!
12:14Don't do it anymore, guy!
12:17I'm bored!
12:19Doc Ock Marvel's Spider-Man
12:21She knew.
12:24I won't let you in.
12:30This means too much to me!
12:33The final battle of Marvel's Spider-Man hurts
12:35because Peter's not fighting a stranger.
12:37Otto Octavius began as his mentor,
12:39employer,
12:40and one of the few people who genuinely understood his intelligence.
12:43Watching that relationship collapse
12:44makes their confrontation atop Oscorp Tower
12:47way more painful than any superhero punch-up.
12:50Otto knows Peter's identity,
12:51has unleashed the Devil's Breath plague,
12:53and used the mechanical arms Peter helped create against him.
12:57The battle becomes a desperate close-range fight,
12:59ending with Peter finally accepting
13:01that the man he admired is gone.
13:03Defeating Doc Ock is satisfying,
13:05but never joyful.
13:06There's no version of their story
13:08that plays out as nicely and slowly and organically
13:11as 2018's Spider-Man.
13:12You're wrong!
13:15You were everything I wanted to be!
13:19You just threw it away!
13:22Riku slash Ansem Kingdom Hearts
13:27Sora!
13:30Nothing in Kingdom Hearts prepares players
13:32for how vicious possessed Riku becomes
13:34inside Hollow Bastion.
13:36The arena is cramped,
13:37healing opportunities are rare,
13:39and Riku attacks with the speed of someone
13:41who's personally decided Sora
13:42should never reach the ending.
13:44He darts across the room,
13:45strings together heavy combos,
13:47and punishes careless movement almost immediately.
13:50Dodging and guarding are essential
13:51because trying to trade hits
13:53usually ends with Sora flattened.
13:55The repeated cutscene before each attempt
13:56only adds to the frustration,
13:58especially after the 10th defeat.
14:00Still, the battle works
14:01because Riku's not just another villain,
14:03he's Sora's closest friend,
14:04twisted into a dangerous obstacle by Ansem.
14:06And finally, overcoming him
14:08brings enormous relief
14:10and, most importantly,
14:12satisfaction.
14:17Super Tyrant Resident Evil Requiem
14:26F*** me!
14:30Leon has spent years
14:32surviving Raccoon City's consequences,
14:34so facing another Super Tyrant
14:36in Resident Evil Requiem
14:37feels like unfinished business
14:38becoming extremely large and angry.
14:40The T-501 charges relentlessly,
14:43shrugs off heavy fire,
14:44and forces Leon to combine
14:46gunfire, movement,
14:47and well-timed parries
14:48while missiles leave
14:49burning hazards across the arena.
14:51Its exposed heart
14:52provides a clear target,
14:53but damaging it
14:54is hardly simple
14:55when the creature
14:55is trying to flatten him.
14:57What makes the victory satisfying
14:58is Leon's complete lack of fear.
15:00This is no longer
15:01the rookie officer
15:02fleeing Mr. X
15:03through the police station.
15:04He's an experienced survivor
15:06confronting a familiar nightmare,
15:08except this time
15:09he's confronting it head-on.
15:10If you want to amplify
15:11the satisfaction,
15:12play Resident Evil 2 first.
15:14It's a fight
15:15three decades in the making.
15:27Ganondorf,
15:28The Legend of Zelda,
15:28Tears of the Kingdom.
15:36Ganondorf spends
15:37the entirety of Tears of the Kingdom,
15:39corrupting Hyrule,
15:40destroying the Master Sword,
15:41and waiting beneath the castle
15:42like history's most patient problem.
15:43The final battle
15:44earns that enormous build-up.
15:46He matches Link directly,
15:47dodges attacks,
15:48counters flurries,
15:49and even stretches his health bar
15:50beyond the screen,
15:52apparently deciding
15:52normal boss rules
15:53for lesser villains,
15:54not for him.
15:55The confrontation then expands
15:57into an aerial battle
15:58between the Demon Dragon
15:59and the Light Dragon.
16:01Landing the final strike
16:02feels satisfying
16:03because every sage,
16:04recovered memory,
16:05and restored pieces
16:06of Link's strength
16:06has led to it.
16:08After being manipulated
16:09and delayed
16:10throughout the adventure,
16:11Link finally drives
16:12the repaired Master Sword
16:13directly into
16:14Ganondorf's forehead.
16:16Good night,
16:17Ganondork.
16:26Sephiroth Final Fantasy VII
16:37After spending most
16:39of Final Fantasy VII
16:40controlling Cloud's life
16:41from the shadows,
16:42Sephiroth finally loses
16:43that power
16:43in spectacular fashion.
16:45He's already destroyed
16:46Nibelheim,
16:47twisted Cloud's memory,
16:48summoned Meteor,
16:49and most importantly,
16:50murdered Aerith.
16:51The battle grows
16:52increasingly dramatic
16:53through several forms
16:54before reaching
16:54safer Sephiroth
16:55and the legendary
16:56one-winged angel theme.
16:58Strangely,
16:58the best part comes
16:59once all that spectacle
17:01is finished.
17:02Cloud faces Sephiroth
17:03alone inside the
17:05lifestream,
17:05without teammates,
17:06complicated tactics,
17:08or another speech
17:09about destiny.
17:10He simply unleashes
17:11Omnislash
17:12and tears through him.
17:13It's hilariously
17:13one-sided,
17:14but I guess that's the point.
17:16Sephiroth thinks
17:17he still owns
17:17Cloud's mind,
17:18but he doesn't own mine.
17:36Virgil,
17:37Devil May Cry 3
17:38Dante's Awakening
17:49Three separate fights
17:50are needed
17:51to settle the rivalry
17:52between Dante
17:52and Virgil,
17:53and each one
17:54raises the stakes.
17:55Their first duel
17:56takes place
17:57beneath dark skies
17:58and heavy rain,
18:00immediately showing
18:00how evenly matched
18:01the brothers are.
18:02Both move quickly,
18:03counter-aggressively,
18:04and fight with
18:05similar confidence,
18:06making the battle
18:06feel more personal
18:07than a standard
18:08boss encounter.
18:09The final clash
18:10in The Netherworld
18:10is even better,
18:11combining brutal difficulty
18:12with one of the series'
18:13most stylish endings.
18:15As the music swells,
18:16both brothers rush forward
18:17for one last strike.
18:19Dante calmly
18:20puts his sword away
18:20before Virgil
18:21has even fallen,
18:22which is either
18:23incredibly confident
18:24or just little brother stuff.
18:37Liquid Ocelot
18:38Metal Gear Solid 4
18:39Guns of the Patriots
18:41Rise and shine,
18:43Snake.
18:45Look,
18:47the war is over.
18:49Everything about
18:50the final fight
18:51in Metal Gear Solid 4
18:52Guns of the Patriots
18:53feels like the series
18:54taking one last bow.
18:55Solid Snake
18:56and Liquid Ocelot
18:57trade punches
18:58atop Outer Haven,
18:59bringing a rivalry
19:00that began
19:01with the Les Enfants
19:02Terrible project
19:03to a brutally
19:04personal conclusion.
19:05As the battle continues,
19:06the music,
19:07health bars,
19:07and character names
19:08shift to represent
19:09earlier Metal Gear Solid games,
19:11turning every phase
19:12into a tribute
19:13to the series' history.
19:14The fight is simple
19:15compared with
19:16the surrounding plot,
19:17but that makes it
19:18way more powerful.
19:19No giant machines
19:20or armies are left,
19:21just two exhausted men
19:23settling decades of hatred
19:24with their fists.
19:26Ocelot's final
19:27You're Pretty Good
19:27callback to Metal Gear Solid 3
19:29Snake Eater
19:29provides the perfect
19:31emotional farewell,
19:32and I think I just
19:33wet my pants with joy.
19:36You're pretty good.
19:37You're pretty good.
19:38You're pretty good.
19:41Zeus, God of War 3.
19:50Zeus begins the original
19:51God of War
19:52as one of the few gods
19:53willing to help Kratos,
19:54even allowing him
19:55to take Ares' place
19:56after victory.
19:57That friendly arrangement
19:58does not survive for long.
20:00Fear consumes Zeus
20:01after Pandora's box
20:02is opened,
20:03leading him to betray
20:04and kill his own son.
20:05Kratos responds
20:06with remarkable restraint
20:08by travelling through time,
20:09rescuing himself,
20:10and launching a full-scale
20:12war against Olympus.
20:13Their conflict stretches
20:15across several battles
20:16before God of War 3
20:17finally lets players
20:18settle everything up close.
20:19The camera shifts
20:20into first person
20:21as Kratos repeatedly
20:23punches Zeus,
20:24covering the screen
20:25in blood
20:25until almost nothing
20:26can be seen.
20:27It's excessive,
20:28it's vicious,
20:29and it's completely
20:30appropriate for Kratos.
20:31You know all those times
20:32someone hurt you
20:33and you imagine
20:34beating their face in?
20:36Kratos actually gets to do that,
20:37and I'm going to live
20:38through him.
