00:06I like that pitch the arm side
00:07change up it's a pitch you have
00:10to really have conviction to
00:11throw it but it's one we don't
00:12see a lot of.
00:13Well you've talked a lot about
00:14over the years Tom Glavine right
00:15used it left on left quite a bit
00:17and was his best best pitch and
00:20you might as well keep another
00:22weapon there in the bag.
00:27Has the same movement oftentimes
00:29is that sinker with about 8 to
00:3110 miles an hour difference.
00:35Well hitters really know their
00:37strike zones don't they those
00:38are two close pitches a junior
00:40took him and now Michael has to
00:43be careful here three balls at a
00:44strike chop foul full count.
00:48There it is again that change up
00:50fastball count dangerous hitter
00:53one of the most dangerous hitters
00:55in the league you're not going to
00:55pour in a heater right there.
01:03Well what will Mr. McGreevy cook up
01:05with a full count.
01:06I think he's going to stick with
01:08something off speed maybe that
01:10slider away it's not the end of
01:11the world if you walk him.
01:15Popped him up.
01:17Herrera in foul ground sheds the
01:19mask and the glasses and reaches
01:22back to make the play never see that
01:25before.
01:32Well went with the change up then
01:33the fastball we showed you the
01:35hot zone in on his hands got the
01:37pop up realized that the shades
01:39weren't helping him on that one and
01:41makes the play.
01:44Nice job by Vaughn somebody saying
01:46why are you wearing him if you're
01:47not going to use them.
01:49It was the angle and they look
01:50cool look at those things.
01:52So to pop out Smollens is in the
01:55way he fly down to center and
01:58Michael misses upstairs one ball no
02:01strikes.
02:01It's like Wilson Contreras played
02:03first base last year his first
02:05pop up what happened was so good
02:07threw his hat took his hat off
02:09like he was a catcher.
02:131 0 pitch.
02:15He is high speaking of Wilson and
02:18his Red Sox former Cardinals
02:20Sonny Gray will pitch for Boston
02:22later today.
02:24The Red Sox take on the Reds in
02:27Cincinnati.
02:29Miles Michaelis is debuting for the
02:31Nationals in Chicago against the
02:33Cubs.
02:38And we will face former Cardinal
02:40Steven Matz in the series wrap up
02:42here tomorrow.
02:43We hope you join us here on
02:46Cardinals TV or better yet at the
02:47ballpark 2 0.
02:50A strike.
02:57Well he's not there yet but this
02:59is what you love about McGreevy.
03:01There has not yet been a situation
03:03that has flustered him.
03:04He has learned to slow the game
03:06down.
03:09And he's going to get out of it.
03:10Ground ball a second.
03:11JJ's got it.
03:12Michael McGreevy to pop up soft
03:14ground ball after two reach
03:16without benefit.
03:17On the hit.
03:18Home fourth coming up in St.
03:23Louis.
03:24Two to nothing Cardinals in St.
03:26Louis.
03:28Two to nothing Cardinals in St.
03:30Louis.
03:31A chance to talk it a chance to
03:32talk it over with the pitching
03:34coach Dusty Blake.
03:35So Dusty, Michael McGreevy through
03:37four scoreless.
03:38What's working for him?
03:39Yeah, he's doing a great job
03:40mixing his arsenal.
03:42He's not showing a lot of the same
03:43pitch twice in the same location
03:44of these guys.
03:45So it's just really hard for him to
03:47give them anything from a
03:48tendency standpoint, from a
03:49predictability standpoint.
03:50He's pretty much throwing the
03:52kitchen sink at him so far.
03:54And that's part of what his
03:55strength is obviously locates
03:56really well, can land a lot of
03:58pitches, has a big arsenal.
03:59And so just really trying to take
04:00advantage of that as much as we
04:01can.
04:02And he's done a great job working
04:03with the line so far.
04:04Big league start number 20 for
04:05him.
04:06He says his goal is simple just to
04:07be more consistent.
04:09How does he do that?
04:10Yeah, that's a routine piece.
04:11That's a experience piece.
04:13Like the more you get a chance to
04:14go out and take the test, the
04:15better ways you learn how to take
04:17the test, so to speak.
04:18So as he continues to get these
04:20opportunities, he's going to find
04:21more synced up ways to go about
04:23his routine and his process that
04:24make sense to not only what he's
04:27done in the past that have got
04:28him to this opportunity, but also
04:30have helped him continue to grow
04:32into that role.
04:33Last thing, you've got a young
04:34rotation.
04:34What do you like about it?
04:36I mean, I just love their hunger
04:37and enthusiasm.
04:38These guys come out.
04:40They are very, very hungry to
04:43continue to learn and evolve, talk
04:44with each other, ask questions, ask
04:47why, really dive into their own
04:50process based on the tools that
04:52we've been able to continue to
04:53build here internally with our
04:54org and really just maximize what
04:56they're capable of versus the
04:58safety of like, well, this is
04:59what I've always done.
05:00Like they're continuing to grow.
05:01And that's great.
05:02Thanks for the chat.
05:03Yeah, absolutely.
05:04Appreciate it.
05:05Guys, Dusty Blake.
05:06Thank you, Jim.
05:06And Michael McGreevey's passing the
05:08test so far.
05:09Four hitless innings with four
05:10strikeouts and a 2-0 lead.
05:14Boyle settled in.
05:15He's retired eight straight.
05:17The last man to reach is this man,
05:18Nolan Gorman, with an RBI single
05:20capping the two-run Cardinals
05:22first.
05:26Like what Dusty said about Michael
05:28McGreevey and what he's doing
05:29today, he really is keeping these
05:31Rays hitters off balance.
05:32They're playing a guessing game
05:33right now.
05:34Well, it's what you have to do.
05:35Look, everybody around baseball,
05:37fans, you have all of this data is
05:40there for you.
05:40You can find out tendencies, when guys
05:42throw stuff, what they like to use
05:44in certain counts.
05:45Well, if you can become more
05:46unpredictable, if you have a feel
05:48for everything in your arsenal,
05:49it makes it a whole lot tougher to
05:51game plan than hitters have to
05:53really react.
05:54So, I think he's doing a really
05:55nice job.
05:55Yvonne behind the plate, calling a
05:57good game to this point.
05:59Guys working together well.
06:01Gorman got his hands in and pulls
06:04that off the sidewall foul.
06:07Still 0-2.
06:08There's the Cardinals battery
06:09talking things over.
06:13And it is really, it's a constant
06:15communication.
06:16Dusty Blake there talking about how
06:17they're going to attack here moving
06:19forward.
06:20How to mix it up the next time
06:22around as well.
06:23Again, trying not to fall into some
06:24of those tendencies.
06:25Remember, this is part of the game
06:27too, that Yvonne's really digging
06:28into more.
06:29Is the game planning, the prepping
06:32aspect of it.
06:38When McGreevy goes back out there,
06:41he'll have the 6-7-8-9 batters for
06:44the Rays in the fifth inning.
06:46He'd like a lead a little bigger
06:47than two.
06:49Gorman, bounce and foul.
06:51Mentioned earlier in the game,
06:52the new rules for base coaches.
06:55Look at where Stubby Clapp is
06:56standing.
06:57He is within the invisible line of
06:59the back edge of the coach's box
07:01down the line, but you can stand
07:03closer to the dugout if you wish.
07:04He cannot go further than that
07:06boundary.
07:06Yeah, and that's so you don't
07:07pick the pitches out of the
07:09pitcher's hand.
07:11I pop.
07:13Mullins.
07:14Palacios.
07:15Should be the center fielder,
07:16Cedric Mullins.
07:18And nine up, nine down for Boyle.
07:20Two men are out.
07:22That's tough duty, though, boy,
07:24with these big-time sluggers
07:25hitting the ball 100 miles an hour
07:27all the time.
07:27You've got to be quick on your feet.
07:29Yeah, go ahead and stay close.
07:30Luckily, you've got a couple of
07:31nimble cats out there to the
07:32Cardinals, so that's helpful.
07:35And three if you count, Jim Hay.
07:36Nice to call on that.
07:38There he is.
07:39Next, he struck out his first
07:40time up.
07:44And he's going to pop one up
07:46towards second.
07:47Palacios has all the room in the
07:49world, and Boyle breezes through
07:51the home fourth.
08:00Tomorrow at Budweiser, what's on
08:02tap, another St. Louis debut.
08:04Yeah, Dustin May, the flamethrower.
08:06What a spring he had.
08:08I mean, the ball jumping out of his
08:09hand, 99 miles an hour, and
08:12looking for a healthy season for
08:14Dustin May.
08:14You want to talk about some swing
08:15and miss?
08:16He has got it.
08:20So it'll be May versus Mets.
08:22And then we will get ready for the
08:25Mets, who come in Monday night,
08:27Tuesday night, and Wednesday
08:28afternoon.
08:31Chandler Simpson struck out his
08:34first time up and takes a strike.
08:37The Rays used a first inning
08:39challenge.
08:40Jake Fraley questioned a called
08:42third strike.
08:43He was overruled.
08:44So anything close, Tampa Bay will
08:47have to think twice until the late
08:49innings in this game.
08:50Yeah, I feel like early in the
08:51game, and that is going to be
08:52part of the evolution for every
08:53club of how they want to utilize
08:54that.
08:55You better be right early, or you
08:56better be the right guy.
08:58There's probably some certain guys
08:59that you'd give some liberty to.
09:01Cam and Arrow, probably one of
09:02those.
09:02Yeah, I don't know how this game's
09:04going to finish up, but two outs,
09:06two strikes in the first inning.
09:07With nobody aboard, Fraley
09:08challenged and lost.
09:10Squibb toward third.
09:11Arias has this one, and the goal,
09:13Glover with a strike.
09:14Takes care of the speedy Simpson.
09:17And one man out.
09:21Just two ground ball outs for
09:23Michael McGreevy today.
09:25Four strikeouts, everything else,
09:27softly for the most part, in the
09:28air today.
09:31And here's Williams, the shortstop.
09:34Carson struck out his first time.
09:51Williams, a first-rounder back in
09:53twenty-twenty-one.
10:12Right there, a strike.
10:16Michael McGreevy, also a first-round
10:18pick by the Cardinals in the
10:20twenty-twenty-one amateur draft.
10:31And as we said at the top of the
10:33broadcast, the Cardinals sporting
10:35the youngest opening day roster
10:37amongst all Major League teams.
10:40It's exciting, though, isn't it?
10:41I mean, getting a chance to see
10:42what this future is going to look
10:44like.
10:45What is this new nucleus going to
10:47look like for the Cardinals?
10:49This group's got a say in it.
10:51That's why Ollie, every time we
10:54talk to him about his young crew,
10:55he's so excited because he knows
10:56that everybody, every single day,
10:58he's coming to work.
10:59There is no, nobody's earned
11:01anything to this point.
11:02They're going to keep working for
11:03it every single day.
11:07Little pop left side.
11:08Who wants it?
11:09Mason Wynn had to battle the sun,
11:11and he makes a tough catch.
11:15Mason Wynn, a gold glover, two men
11:17out, here's Jim Hayes.
11:18Yeah, Mason loves his ball club.
11:21He says he doesn't think that
11:22being a young team is a negative.
11:25He told me, this is his words.
11:28He said, I feel like there's a
11:30stigma.
11:31You need a veteran presence, blah,
11:33blah, blah.
11:33I really don't believe in that.
11:35We're all young.
11:35We're all into the same things,
11:37and the energy in the clubhouse
11:39is off the charts.
11:40And guys, Mason says it's really
11:42a brotherhood, started in spring,
11:44and we feel like this is the
11:46Cardinals team for the next three,
11:49four, or five years.
11:50They believe they're building
11:51something, guys.
11:52That's exciting.
11:52And there's a difference between
11:53being young and inexperienced.
11:55You look at these young Cardinals,
11:57Walker, three-plus years in the
11:59big leagues, Gorman, three-plus
12:00years, Burleson's been around a
12:02while, Herrera's been around a
12:03while.
12:04There is not a whole lot of wide-eyed
12:07rookie nature for this club.
12:10An exception is Nathan Church,
12:12who has to battle the sun as well,
12:14retreats and puts it away.
12:16And Micah McGreevy has a special
12:19game going, folks.
12:20No hits through five and a two-run
12:23lead.
12:28Something big, bold, and stacked,
12:30you've got to check out.
12:31If you're hungry for something big,
12:33bold, and stacked, you've got to
12:34check out the new Big Arch, the
12:37locker at McDonald's.
12:412-0.
12:42The Cardinals have the lead.
12:44Let's see if we can break the
12:45spell of Joe Boyle, who surrendered
12:47two runs, three hits in the first
12:49inning, but has now set down Brad
12:5110 in a row.
12:52What's he doing differently now that
12:53he wasn't doing in the first?
12:55I think he's mixing a little bit
12:56better.
12:56He realized that the Cardinals were
12:57jumping on those fastballs early.
13:01He's been throwing some wrinkles in
13:02like that slider there.
13:04Camonero, foul ground with a pink
13:06glove, takes care of church, one
13:08pitch, and one man out.
13:13Saturday, April 11th, you can take
13:15home a gray and red Cardinals
13:17dugout hoodie that's presented by
13:19our friends at Mercy.
13:20It's available in medium-sized and
13:23extra-large-sized wall supplies.
13:25Last details at Cardinals.com
13:27and slash promotions.
13:30So one pitch, one out.
13:32Here's Walker.
13:36Jordan had a nice swing his first
13:37time up at the ball a long way,
13:39the other way, but was retired.
13:53Sharply hit left side.
13:55Camonero to his knees.
13:56Good play and a good throw that
13:58time.
14:00Walker, a two-hopper, and 12 up,
14:0312 out, two outs.
14:04Well, after a slow start over at the
14:06hot corner on opening day with a
14:08pair of errors, Camonero has really
14:11made some big plays.
14:12Is that a good one?
14:13Jordan Walker can move.
14:14He had to be fast, and he was.
14:22Here's Victor.
14:24Williams took care of him at short
14:26stop.
14:29So Victor Scott, the second is 0 for 1
14:32and today.
14:36Camonero, in the first time these
14:38two matched up, was about 15 feet
14:41closer to the plate.
14:43He's a step or two in on the grass
14:45at third.
14:47And there's good fastball.
14:49This guy maintains his velo well.
14:51An average fastball velocity of
14:5398 and a half miles an hour.
14:58So let's see what Victor does
15:16with two strikes swing and a miss.
15:19So Boyle is mixing and matching.
15:21He has struck out four.
15:23He set down 13 straight.
15:30On Tuesday, March 31st, the Mets are
15:33in town with your theme ticket.
15:34You take home an exclusive
15:35Cardinals-themed Sally bobblehead.
15:38Get your tickets details at
15:40Cardinals.com slash theme.
15:44McGreevy, five innings of shutout
15:47ball.
15:48He's only walked one batter.
15:49In fact, just two men have reached
15:51one on an error, one on that base
15:52on balls.
15:53And now he faces nine, one, and two
15:56for the Rays, who trail two to
15:58nothing.
16:12Curve ball low for Hunter Fiducia.
16:16Came over from the Dodgers.
16:18I believe that was the Tyler
16:21Glassnow deal Glassnow pitches
16:22for L.A.
16:24Later on today.
16:29Two balls at a strike.
16:32What wind there is at the
16:34ballpark today appears to be
16:35blowing in from right.
16:4050 degrees at first pitch we
16:43were told.
16:45But it'll be in the 70s soon in
16:47the 90s shortly thereafter.
16:49And we'll be saying, gosh, I wish
16:50it was as chilly as it was in
16:51March.
16:52No, we won't.
16:52What an odd couple of days,
16:54though.
16:5591 on opening day.
16:56Drops about 40 degrees.
16:59But still a beautiful day to be
17:01at the ballpark.
17:02And a great day to watch Michael
17:04McGreevy do his thing.
17:05Thanks for your support.
17:07Two balls, two strikes.
17:09He wins the count.
17:10You know me, desert rat.
17:11Yeah, good point.
17:12If it's cold, I don't want it.
17:13There was a sign I saw on my way
17:16up to St. Louis and said, the
17:18weather is having commitment
17:19issues.
17:20That's a good sign.
17:23The 2-2.
17:25Swing and a miss.
17:26Michael comes back from a 2-0
17:28count and has his fifth
17:30strikeout.
17:31Well, this has been a really,
17:34really good offering for Michael
17:36McGreevy.
17:36Chevy pitch track.
17:38The changeup tailing down and
17:40away there to get another
17:41strikeout.
17:44Just mixing it up well.
17:45And he has done a good job
17:47against these lefties of just
17:48keeping them honest and opening
17:50up that outer half of the plate.
17:51Well, you wondered how he would
17:53do against the lefties.
17:54Their team is 0-4, but the
17:55lefties in particular 0-4-11 in
17:58the game to this point against
18:00Michael McGreevy.
18:01And four of the five strikeouts
18:02have been lefties.
18:06So the Cardinals got him two in
18:08the first.
18:09He's made it stand up.
18:10He's got Yandy Diaz and caught
18:12by J.J.
18:14Timed his lead perfectly.
18:17Yandy Diaz retired for round
18:18number two.
18:24J.J.
18:24Weatherholm.
18:25Everybody's so excited about this
18:27young man, about the bat, but
18:28the defense has been really good
18:30for him as well.
18:31Another changeup down and a nice
18:34play made one of the rare hard
18:46hit balls by the Rays in the game.
18:47They've had two, maybe three of
18:49them.
18:50And now Ronda is next and waves
18:53and misses a curveball.
18:55There has been no pattern for
18:57McGreevy.
18:58That's what Dusty and Jim were
18:59talking about.
18:59That has continued, obviously.
19:01As he pushes toward 90 pitches
19:04in the sixth inning today.
19:14What a joy it must be when you're
19:15around the plate a lot and you
19:17have, in McGreevy's case, maybe
19:19five of your seven pitches
19:20working.
19:20You've got some options and it's
19:22even better when you have some
19:24counts and he's done a good job of
19:26commanding them.
19:26But when he falls behind, he
19:28doesn't have to pour in a fastball
19:30like he can use some other
19:31things to get right back into the
19:32count.
19:33That was a good cutter there.
19:35Threw that pitch a lot in the
19:36first couple of innings.
19:38To my memory, that's one of the
19:39first ones he's thrown since.
19:42And now he's a strike away from
19:44ending the Rays sixth.
19:51And with that pitch count down at
19:5588, action in the Cardinals'
19:58bullpen.
19:58And then it's Matt Svonson who
20:02strikes to play catch first.
20:12So full count.
20:17Aranda is one of two base runners
20:19to reach.
20:20He walked back in the fourth inning.
20:22That was the key inning in the game
20:23at this point.
20:24Two aboard, nobody out.
20:25And McGreevy got out of it.
20:29He has had to throw a lot of
20:30pitches.
20:31That is his sixth full count and
20:34his second walk.
20:35And now Jake Fraley's coming on.
20:38Fraley was overanxious and popped
20:40up his last time.
20:42And a decision here for the
20:44Cardinals.
20:45Will McGreevy face him for a third
20:46time?
20:48Slots had just got up, so I'm not
20:50sure he's ready yet.
20:52He would almost certainly be
20:53getting ready for the man on deck.
20:55Yeah, we definitely think so.
20:56Give him the opportunity here to
20:57get out of this inning.
20:59What a game so far it has been
21:00for McGreevy.
21:05We'll check on Aranda at first
21:07base.
21:23Fraley struck out and, as I said,
21:25popped out today.
21:26So he's 0 for 2.
21:32Room in left center for Jake.
21:35J.J.
21:36swings over at second.
21:38And that's low.
21:39Two balls, no strikes.
21:52Seattle and Cincinnati.
21:54The stops for Jake Fraley before
21:55arriving in Tampa Bay with the
21:57Rays.
22:00And now a very important pitch.
22:02Three balls, no strikes.
22:17I wonder if Fraley will have the
22:19green line.
22:19I'm guessing no with Camonero on
22:21deck.
22:21I would definitely doubt it right
22:23here, but still, you're not going
22:25to pour one center cut just in
22:27case.
22:28Still got to make a pitch.
22:33And he did.
22:38Ninety-three pitches for McGreevy.
22:42Now, 94 of them.
22:44Fifty-five strikes.
22:54Cutter.
22:55Late swing.
22:56And now the guessing game begins.
22:58What's he throwing here?
23:00Well, he wants to go ahead and
23:02finish this thing off right here.
23:03The changeup has been effective
23:05for him, but I think he sticks
23:06with one of his fastballs.
23:08Maybe that sinker down the way,
23:10get your ground ball.
23:19And Michael McGreevy with six no
23:23hit innings enjoys a two-nothing
23:27lead in his season debut on
23:29Cardinals TV.
23:37On top of all that happened for
23:40JJ in the opener, one of the
23:43old teachers dug out a photo of
23:45JJ from the fifth grade that went
23:47viral.
23:48The kids were asked back then what
23:49they wanted to be when they
23:50grew up.
23:51JJ was holding a sign that said
23:53MLB player.
23:54He told me he knew from an early
23:57age what he wanted to be.
23:58Guys, he said when he was really
24:00little he wanted to be a
24:01veterinarian, but that quickly
24:03gave way to baseball.
24:05Back to the mound and Boyle
24:07will take care of JJ weather.
24:09What a cute picture.
24:11Nailed it.
24:12That was perfect.
24:13We should.
24:14I want to see your fifth grade
24:15picture.
24:16Let's see what I can dig up for
24:18you.
24:18See what I can do.
24:19I don't know if might said MLB
24:21player or not.
24:21Told you I wanted to be what I
24:23called it when I was in
24:24kindergarten.
24:25Can can man wanted to be a
24:26trash can.
24:27That's right.
24:27That's right.
24:29I just loved it.
24:30Trash day I was there ready.
24:34But it's a it's great to see
24:36dreams come true like that.
24:37It is.
24:39Michael McGreevy had a day to
24:41dream of six no hit innings
24:43figure he's done.
24:44As Riley O'Brien is now up and
24:47throwing the Cardinals now can
24:48set up their bullpen.
24:50O'Brien Romero and Stanek if
24:53they so choose we'll see how it
24:55plays out over the final three
24:56innings with a two run lead.
25:04Really impressed with the
25:05adjustments Joe Boyle made in
25:07the first inning the Cardinals
25:09three singles two steals down to
25:11nothing and hitting the ball
25:12hard.
25:13He sat down 14 straight since he
25:16started leaning on the slider
25:18sweeper more often and that's
25:20that split of his another good
25:23slider there.
25:25So two men out Herrera is
25:28retired or BJC health care
25:29difference makers the first
25:31inning for the Redbirds offense
25:32three singles turned into two
25:34runs.
25:35Well speaking of fastballs
25:36Burley was ready for one the
25:38first pitch that he got ninety
25:40seven and then Gorman did the
25:41same thing on a ninety seven
25:42mile an hour fastball a couple
25:44of stolen bases in the inning and a
25:46couple of runs for the Cardinals.
25:53It's fun watching Alec Burleson
25:55hit.
25:55Yes.
25:56Let's talk about the lefty lefty
25:58part of it first.
25:59He does a really good job there.
26:00But whether it's a lefty or
26:01righty Brad you made the point of
26:02how he is able to get on top of
26:04the baseball and hit high velocity
26:06up in the zone.
26:07He makes adjustments really well
26:08too and you're right he holds
26:09those hands up so high and he's
26:11just able to get through the
26:12ball quickly.
26:13Trust him not a lot of wasted
26:14movement for Alec Burleson but
26:17this guy he's a student of the
26:19game he knows how you're going
26:20to want to try to attack him.
26:23He said he can make those
26:25adjustments quickly you see
26:26after a swing sometimes when
26:27he's mad about something that
26:29he did he checks right back in
26:30and quickly makes a change.
26:35One homer shy of 50 as a big
26:37leaguer and borderline call goes
26:42Boyle's way.
26:43Now it's two and two as you look
26:45at dirt cam and the set up
26:47umpire catcher and Cardinals
26:49first baseman Alec Burleson.
26:51If you look closely Brad's way
26:52really dig in there but I
26:54totally was the pitch trying to
26:59shoot that to left.
26:59That's the other thing that's so
27:00fun to watch this guy do.
27:02For a guy that's got power and
27:04hits line drives he doesn't
27:06strike out all that much by
27:07today's standards.
27:09He's able to hit the ball the
27:09other way with two strikes.
27:11They can spoil some pitches
27:12doesn't sell out all the time
27:13with two strikes.
27:162-2.
27:18Fought it off.
27:25So that's his body of work last
27:29year.
27:30As Brad said I agree more in the
27:32tank for him this year.
27:34Already three RBI's and four hits
27:37in the first two games.
27:39And he's forced to full count.
27:42Cardinals looking for their first
27:43base runner since the first
27:45inning.
27:46There is nobody up in the Rays
27:48bullpen.
27:49Boyle has been outstanding but
27:51trails to zip.
27:56To left.
27:58Simpson is there and has it.
28:01Burleson tried to go the other
28:02way.
28:03And we are off to the seventh
28:05where the Cardinals protect the
28:07two run lead.
28:15game.
28:30Well can't do much better than
28:32what Michael McGreevy did in his
28:34first six innings of the season.
28:35Six no hit frames and with his
28:38pitch count up around 90 the
28:40bullpen into play here with the
28:41two run lead.
28:42Set that bar pretty high then
28:43Michael McGreevy.
28:44That was awesome to see him go
28:46out there utilize his whole
28:47arsenal keep these guys off
28:48balance.
28:49And sure enough Junior Caminero
28:51with a new pitcher Riley O'Brien
28:53spoils the no hit bid with a
28:55single up the middle the first
28:56hit of the day for Tampa Bay
28:59today.
29:01Well take a look at the pitch
29:03from Riley O'Brien he checks in
29:05your Chevy pitch track center cut
29:07sinker hands inside there by
29:09Caminero.
29:11So the one hit how about a ground
29:13ball right after it.
29:15Cedric Mullins is off to.
29:22This ball is a funny game when
29:24you look at the box scores and
29:25you look at the lines of
29:26individual pitchers over the
29:28course of the game you'll look
29:29at both of the middle relief
29:30course for the Cardinals and
29:31Rays say wow they had a tough
29:32time of it.
29:34But the game with inside the
29:36game for St. Louis was some
29:38tough luck.
29:39Or Matt Svonson and Chris
29:41Roycroft.
29:41Yeah they gave up their share of
29:42hits Brad but they were soft
29:44hits.
29:45To tip make him and arrows was
29:46not.
29:47So let's see if collectively this
29:48group could rebound in the
29:49seventh eighth and ultimately
29:50ninth inning.
29:51Yeah that is something in in the
29:53bullpen you better have a short
29:54memory right whether it's good or
29:55bad whatever happens to you the
29:57next day is a new life.
29:59There's one.
30:01There's two.
30:02Double play.
30:03Three six three.
30:06Could you ask for a lottery ticket
30:07next.
30:09Two outs.
30:10Will do.
30:12Will do.
30:12You'll be looking for your favorite
30:13numbers here in a second.
30:15Ninety seven mile an hour sinker
30:16down.
30:17Got the ground ball.
30:19Had to be fast with it.
30:20Everything had to be quick.
30:21It was the transfer from Burley
30:23gets back gets it back by
30:24himself.
30:25Mason win with a strong throw to
30:27finish it off.
30:28Easier throw for the left hand
30:30throwing first baseman inside the
30:32line.
30:32And anytime you get the ball to
30:34Mason win he's going to make it
30:36close.
30:38And in the flash of an eye we've
30:40got two outs for Chandler Simpson
30:42who's also struck out and
30:43grounded out.
30:57Simpson one for five in the
30:59series.
31:07Riley's bringing it in the upper
31:09nineties as we've been spoiled to
31:11see.
31:11He pitched more than an inning in the opener.
31:15Gave up a hit, struck out two in an inning and a third's worth of work.
31:25A 92 mile an hour slider.
31:27What a gift.
31:29It's a lot to cover for a hitter.
31:32That's a tighter one.
31:33He's got a slider that's a little bit slower that'll move more horizontally.
31:40And Simpson wants to take his time out.
31:43He's a kid from Atlanta, Georgia, played at UAB and Georgia Tech.
31:50Now with the Tampa Bay Rays down to his last strike.
31:55And a little tapper.
31:56Tough play.
31:58Throw to first.
31:59He is not in time.
32:07Well, behold, the power of speed, Chip.
32:09This one couldn't have rolled it out there much better.
32:1298 mile an hour sinker beat it right into the ground.
32:17One of the fastest men in all of baseball now aboard.
32:22We'll see if Kevin Cash tries to force the issue with this part of his lineup card up.
32:27You've got Carson Williams and Palacios scheduled.
32:31But they're not afraid to go to the bench as we saw yesterday.
32:36But it won't matter.
32:37Mason Wynn loads up and throws the first two time.
32:40And that will retire the side.
32:42The Rays get their first hits.
32:44But they haven't scored yet.
32:45Time to stretch in St. Louis.
32:52Most presented by your Mid-America Chevy dealers.
32:55By Rally House St. Louis.
32:57It's your city.
32:58It's your house.
32:58It's Rally House.
32:59And by Budweiser, this Bud's for you.
33:03Another beautiful day in St. Louis.
33:05Chip and Brad.
33:05Jim Hayes with you.
33:06Cardinals at the stretch.
33:08Enjoy a 2-0 lead.
33:10Timely hitting early.
33:11Outstanding pitching since.
33:12And that's where we are in game two.
33:14Yeah, early on.
33:16A couple of big hits.
33:17A couple of stolen bases.
33:18Both those guys came around to score.
33:20McGreevy incredible through his six.
33:22It's now Chevy called to the bullpen time.
33:24Cole Solcer is going to be in on the action here for the Rays.
33:2918 games a year ago for Tampa Bay.
33:31Also got big league time with Arizona, Miami, and Baltimore.
33:36Boy, Joe Boyle was impressive.
33:38Finishing with 16 up, 16 down.
33:41But no run support.
33:42Just two hits of support for the Tampa Bay starter.
33:45Yeah, I got to be honest.
33:46I didn't think that Solcer was going to make it out of the third.
33:48The Cardinals made him work early.
33:49They were jumping on a lot of pitches.
33:51He made some adjustments.
33:54Mason pops this one up.
33:55Behind first, Aranda.
33:57Fraley joins him.
33:58It'll be Aranda.
33:59And a bit of a snow cone.
34:01He makes the play.
34:02And that's how our Honda home run inning kicks off for the pop-up to first.
34:06If the Cardinals hit a homer in this seventh inning,
34:09the gateway Honda dealers donate $1,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
34:20Nolan Gorman has one of the Cardinals RBIs today.
34:26He's knocked in three runs so far on the year.
34:29That's inside.
34:30Ball one.
34:40I know it's early.
34:41I know spring training results don't matter an awful lot,
34:45but it's apparent to me, Brad,
34:46that the swing decisions for Gorman are a lot more sharp than they had been.
34:51It certainly appears so, right?
34:53Cut down his strikeout rate quite a bit in spring training.
34:57And just swinging a pitch as he can handle, to your point, right?
35:00Making a chance or making a faithful decision to swing and stuff that he can drive.
35:11Now some work to do.
35:12Two balls, two strikes.
35:18Gorman had a good day in the first game of the year.
35:21Not just righty versus lefty, but lefty, lefty, too.
35:25And with McGreevy, a ball-in-play pitcher,
35:28Urias gets the start at third,
35:30but she can still keep Gorman's batting the lineup with Herrera catching.
35:34We'll see if that pays off
35:36as the Redbirds try to extend a 2-0 lead.
35:39In the eighth,
35:41Tampa Bay will have their 8-9-1 batters coming up.
35:44We've got to face the big boys one more time.
35:46We've got six outs to get.
35:49And JoJo Romero playing catch for the eighth inning.
35:54That's another example of a pitch that Gorman might have swung at last year.
36:03So that's a full count.
36:10And he pulled the string, a change-up.
36:12Good pitch.
36:13And Gorman retired on strikes.
36:15That is out number two.
36:18And Urias is next.
36:21Well, take a look at it again.
36:22You're right.
36:23It was a good one.
36:23Look at the action on this one.
36:25And Chevy Pitch Track sells it just like the fastball coming out of the hands
36:29and then dives down under the zone.
36:34Urias 0 for 2.
36:40I would imagine a change-up is a really hard pitch to throw
36:44when you're trying to throw hard.
36:46Well, it's all about the grip, right?
36:48You, same arm action, everything ends up being the same.
36:51You let the grip do the work.
36:52The grip ends up taking the velocity off.
36:55That's why it's such a field pitch.
36:57There are often times you get it in your hand, you throw it,
36:59and it's still a little bit harder than you want.
37:01You've got to find that right finger placement, the right movement.
37:05That's drilled toward right.
37:07Fraley broke in, breaks back, recovers, but can't catch it.
37:11That ball's off his glove.
37:12It's off the wall.
37:13And Urias will stand at second.
37:16Fraley was in trouble from the moment that ball was struck.
37:20And the Cardinals have their first base runner since the first inning.
37:24Well, let's see if they can cash in on this one.
37:26You're right.
37:26First step.
37:27You see, two steps in, a few steps back,
37:30and they could never quite get there.
37:31The sun is right in his eye.
37:34You see it gleaming off his glasses.
37:42That's two base hit.
37:43It snaps a streak of 18 straight retired,
37:46and now Church a chance to add to the lead.
37:50Nathan is 0 for 2,
37:52and squibs this one toward the hill.
37:55And Cesar with a strike,
37:57and that will retire the side.
37:58So, the Cardinals head to the eighth inning.
38:01Six outs to get with a two-run lead in game two.
38:09By Car Shield coming up after the final pitch.
38:12Cardinals postgame presented by Car Shield coming up after the final pitch.
38:16Cardinals leading this one.
38:17Mark Sweeney.
38:18Ali Marmo can get creative here to close this game out.
38:21Yeah, especially securing this win for Michael McGravey,
38:24who was excellent today.
38:25But, yes, the creativity at the back end of the bullpen,
38:27this will be a specialty for Ali to be able to go to.
38:30We'll see if the Cardinals can secure the series victory.
38:33Chip and Brad.
38:34Thank you, guys.
38:37Lefty lane for JoJo Romero,
38:39but it's a righty who's going to start the sequence
38:42against the Cardinals left-hander.
38:43Nick Fortes will pinch hit for Richie Palacios here.
38:56He's got a couple of outs in game one.
39:02Let's see what he does here in game two.
39:07What a year it was last year for JoJo Romero.
39:10I mean, this was the go-to guy in the pen.
39:12Took over after Helsley was traded at the back end.
39:17Just no fear.
39:18Goes right after the opposition.
39:23Let's see what the splits look like.
39:28Your lefties don't want to see him coming, for sure.
39:31Pretty good numbers against the righties as well.
39:36Low with a changeup.
39:37Three balls, two strikes.
39:38What's driven you crazy about facing the Rays in this series, Brad,
39:41are all the infield hits and all the soft hits.
39:44They count, but they are hitting them where we can't get them.
39:48I don't know.
39:48You're a big exit velo guy, right?
39:51Six of their 19 hits were 72 or lower.
39:55That's not a lot.
39:56And three of them were under 58.
39:59So just beating them into the ground.
40:01But you're right, they all count.
40:03The Cardinals done a really good job,
40:05even with some traffic on the base pass,
40:07making pitches when they really needed to.
40:09Need to make one here.
40:11And a chopper off the plate.
40:13That's trickling foul.
40:15And Cortez will try again.
40:18Three o'clock here in St. Louis.
40:20Entertaining game.
40:21Well-pitched game.
40:23If you're just joining us, Michael McGreevy.
40:24Six no-hit innings.
40:26He walked two batters.
40:28And to your point, Brad, in our opening comments,
40:31did great against the lefties.
40:32They did.
40:33And the cutter, he utilized that well.
40:36Something coming in on them,
40:38so he was able to open up the other side of the plate.
40:41A lot of weak contact from him
40:43and a feel for everything.
40:45Pitched backwards well.
40:46Loved everything you saw from Michael McGreevy.
40:50Sharply hit.
40:51Weatherholt to his right.
40:52Two and E.
40:53And a nice comeback for Romero.
40:56There is out number one in the Tampa Bay 8th.
40:59We step aside for a quick word
41:01from our friends at Rally House.
41:02The season starts at Rally House.
41:05From jerseys and hats to tumblers for game day,
41:07it's where outrageous selection meets every fan's style.
41:14Tampa Bay goes to its bench again.
41:18It's Ben Williamson.
41:28Hunter Fiduccia batting ninth.
41:30Taken down.
41:31He went over two with a couple of strikeouts.
41:43Base is empty.
41:44One out.
41:45Keith O'Brien, our great stat man,
41:47sent me a note.
41:48Last 17 appearances for Romero last year.
41:53He only gave up an earned run
41:54in one of those 17 games.
41:57That's finishing.
42:00Hot.
42:01And speaking of hot, 95,
42:03there's a good idea.
42:04No balls, two strikes.
42:06That'll put you in the driver's seat.
42:07And I got a lot of different options.
42:09Can bury that slider,
42:10turn over the changeup,
42:10or gas him upstairs yet again.
42:20And he has right-hand hitter,
42:23waits on deck with one out.
42:25And no chase, the ball,
42:27and two strikes.
42:35The Cardinals play Williamson
42:37as an opposite field hitter
42:38in the outfield.
42:40Victor on the run.
42:41Got a good jump.
42:43He's going to get there
42:43and makes tumbling catch.
42:45Great closing speed
42:47for Victor Scott.
42:48And two men are out.
42:52What do we call it?
42:53The no-fly zone?
42:54That is it right there.
42:55Chip, you were on it.
42:56The jump was a good one.
42:58This is a sinking liner
43:00on a low changeup.
43:02Coming in, makes the grab.
43:09So Diaz, with the bases empty,
43:11is 0 for 3.
43:13After a 3-hit game in the opener,
43:16and pulled foul at 3rd.
43:18Look alive in that third-base
43:19coaching box.
43:21No balls at a strike.
