01:51Let's keep our fingers crossed.
01:52It lasts throughout that 57 laps.
01:55Here's the starting grid then for today's race.
01:57We have 21 on it because Isaac Adjar is starting from the pit lane.
02:01He was disqualified from qualifying.
02:02His barge boards were too big.
02:04Gabriel Bortoletto only got one lap in qualifying before his car caught fire.
02:08Sergio Perez lines up alongside his Cadillac teammate Valtteri Bottas.
02:11Ahead of these, the two, Aston Martin, separated by only six one-hundredths of a second, Lance Stroll and Fernando
02:18Alonso.
02:18Arvid Lindblad was out in Q1 for the first time in his rookie season.
02:23Alex Albon got out of Q1 for the first time since Australia.
02:26Esteban Ocon's been out qualified 3-1 by his teammate Oli Behrman this season in Grand Prix's.
02:31Carlos Sainz alongside him in 13th with Behrman starting 12th.
02:34Liam Lawson has his highest start since Australia in 11th.
02:38And Nico Hülkenberg gets the first top ten start this year,
02:41whilst Franco Colopinto out-qualified Pierre Gasly for the second time this weekend at Alpine.
02:46Colopinto into the top ten in qualifying for only the second time.
02:50It's a disappointing seventh for Oscar Piastri.
02:53Lewis Hamilton and George Russell start sixth and fifth,
02:56equaling their best start for a Miami Grand Prix.
02:58Lando Norris won the sprint race.
03:00He starts fourth alongside Charles Leclerc,
03:02who finished third yesterday and starts third today.
03:05And it's a front row of Max Verstappen,
03:07who hadn't previously started higher than eighth this year,
03:10and Kimi Antonelli on pole for the third consecutive Grand Prix.
03:14The teenager is fast coming of age, Martin Brundle.
03:18But before we reflect on his possible finish, he needs a good start today.
03:23He does, but as we saw in Japan,
03:24even he managed to recover from that with a little bit of luck with the safety car there.
03:29But this is going to be a long and very interesting race,
03:32especially if we do get some rain a little bit further down the road,
03:37which is what is forecast.
03:39But then this is much better than it was forecast anyway already, isn't it?
03:43So who knows as the reigning world champion sits on the grid knowing what he's got to do.
03:49And that McLaren's been a fast starter all year.
03:51As has the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc,
03:55who's nipped into the lead on lap one in Australia, of course, from fourth on the grid.
04:00From third on the grid, Lewis Hamilton in China and Piastri in Japan both got into the lead at the
04:06start of the race.
04:07Kimi Antonelli has dropped places at the start every single time the lights have gone out this season.
04:13Yeah, that really gets in your head.
04:15Starts are in your head as much as anything.
04:17You can mess a start up on Saturday night for a Sunday.
04:21You really, but they practice a lot of it now.
04:25But of course, you know, these are completely new power units, completely new cars.
04:31But some have aced it more than others.
04:34At least they don't have to try and work out what a wet start involves.
04:38So they can go through their normal procedures.
04:40If it's a wet race, I'd put my money on Max Verstappen this afternoon.
04:44And I think that could be smart money.
04:46Medium tyres on every single car on the grid.
04:49Isaac Hadjar will start on the hard compound tyre.
04:53And that's not a surprise either.
04:59It is one o'clock in the afternoon here in Miami at six o'clock back in the UK in
05:03the Republic of Ireland.
05:04Welcome along to our viewers on Sky Sports main event.
05:07It's time to set forth on the formation lap.
05:10Kimi Antonelli wants to get on with it.
05:12Max Verstappen just lagging behind a little touch.
05:15Those two haven't had the best starts, but they're there right at the front with the best chance when the
05:21lights go out.
05:22For what could be a wide open race today.
05:25Track temperature, Martin, it's around about 20 degrees cooler than it was in the sprint race.
05:30So did anyone do a little gamble on setup maybe for not energising the tyres quite as much in qualifying
05:38that could hinder them today when you might need that energy with the track temperature so cold?
05:42That's what we're here to find out.
05:44And, yeah, I think most of them thought they might be starting in the rain.
05:50And that gets quite complicated with these latest regulations with the wings going up and down in terms of choosing
05:55your right height, where you fly the car along the track.
05:59But 21 cars on the grid, all on medium tyres, as you said.
06:02One on hard compound tyres, Isaac Hadjar, in the pit lane because they found his car a millimetre or two
06:09out of the regulations.
06:11So, and there he is.
06:13So he's allowed to go round and do a formation lap.
06:17And then he has to come back in the pit lane.
06:21He's got a bit of catching up to do.
06:22Well, he has, which means he can go a little bit faster and maybe warm up his tyres just a
06:26touch as well.
06:27Max Verstappen, in the first two years here in Miami, reigned supreme.
06:31This is the fifth Grand Prix to be held at this stadium.
06:34And McLaren, for the last two years, have been well and truly on top.
06:38But this season, it's been about Mercedes, who have won the opening three Grand Prix of the year.
06:43They have never failed to win a world title when they've won the opening three Grand Prix of the year.
06:48They have looked the strongest team, but Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari bringing big upgrades to the track this weekend.
06:55They, Mercedes, waiting until Canada for theirs.
06:58West 203rd Street, they're going down at the moment, also known as the back straight for this weekend.
07:04Ted has news.
07:05Thank you, Martin.
07:06Yeah, just caught a look at the weather radar on one of the pit walls before I came back into
07:10the pit lane.
07:11And there is a splodge of rain, but it's moving north of the circuit.
07:14So it looks like we're going to dodge the weather for now.
07:17So it looks like the only thing Kimi Antonelli needs to worry about is his start.
07:20Kimi Antonelli, who has joined Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher as the only three drivers to take their first three
07:27Grand Prix polls consecutively,
07:29could join Mika Hakkinen and Damon Hill as the only three drivers to win their first three Grand Prix consecutively.
07:37That is esteemed company to be in.
07:39Absolutely.
07:40Yeah, well, they've sort of hung him out to try a bit out front.
07:44He's turning up on the grid and they're still busy warming their tyres.
07:49So he's backed up a bit, has Kimi, and to keep them...
07:52There's my mate from the grid.
07:56And, yeah, and then he'll sit on front row.
08:01Max has turned his car towards Kimi quite a lot, and Kimi's turned his car towards Max a little bit.
08:07Max with his front tyre, look, just over that yellow line.
08:10Absolutely perfect.
08:12Looks like Kimi Antonelli's done the same thing up to our left, top left of the screen there.
08:17So I think every centimetre counts down towards a very short run to the first corner.
08:51Absolutely.
08:52Nice starting procedure.
08:54Let those revs build up.
08:57And now we get those five lights ahead of the drivers.
09:00It's the Miami Grand Prix in 2026.
09:03It's lights out, and away we go.
09:05This time Antonelli does get away a little better, but once again,
09:08Charles Leclerc is flying through and almost into the lead.
09:12Look up for Verstappen and Antonelli.
09:14Could let Leclerc through Verstappen.
09:16Nearly losing it.
09:17He has lost it.
09:18He's spun around and is losing places as he gets swollen up by the rest of the pack.
09:23Antonelli does lead this Grand Prix.
09:25Lewis Hamilton under pressure.
09:27Lando Norris is up into second place.
09:29What a start.
09:30He has to his third.
09:31Yes, Max got on the throttle.
09:33He was so eager to keep that position that he put too much power in, and around he went.
09:40Charles Leclerc actually has led through into the lead.
09:43Camera was focusing on Kimi Antonelli, but Leclerc was already a long way clear.
09:47We didn't quite see the full extent of that as we were concentrating on Max Verstappen,
09:52but that is superb for Leclerc.
09:54Antonelli's second.
09:55Then comes Norris and Piastri.
09:57George Russell, Colopinto on the inside of Lewis Hamilton at Turn 11.
10:01Oh, and they touched, and there's damage to the Ferrari.
10:04Max Verstappen's involved there with Liam Lawson, and also Carlos Sainz,
10:08and it's all going off on this first lap.
10:10Max is being super aggressive, trying to recover positions,
10:14and even the way he spun it was clever,
10:16but luckily for Max Verstappen, nobody ran into the back of him somehow,
10:21but it did allow Leclerc to zoom off out front
10:24as the pack had to go around Max's spinning car.
10:28Hamilton's got past Colopinto down that back straight,
10:31but I'd be amazed if there's not significant damage to that Ferrari.
10:34There's Max Verstappen on the inside,
10:36and Carlos Sainz's former teammates of Max Verstappen trying to squeeze through.
10:40Alex Albon might take advantage of that and pick off two places in one corner,
10:45and almost bangs wheels with Verstappen,
10:47who manages to just stay ahead.
10:48The rundown now towards Turn 1.
10:51Albon's got the advantage over Verstappen.
10:53Verstappen on the inside.
10:55Sainz and Gasly.
10:56Behind them comes Ocona Behrman.
10:57I'm counting, I think, four cars that Verstappen had contact with in that first lap.
11:02I think he might, it's tire-to-tire mostly,
11:04he might have a little bit of damage on the right front corner of his wing,
11:09front wing, but it looks okay at the moment, as we see...
11:12Hulkenberg into the pits,
11:14and a new nose change there for Nico Hulkenberg.
11:18Leclerc has made up those places,
11:20still in the lead from Antonelli, Norris and Piastri.
11:23Russell and Hamilton running fifth and sixth,
11:25where they started.
11:26Colopinto seven, Lawson up to eighth,
11:28Verstappen's in ninth,
11:29then comes Albon and Gasly.
11:31Sainz, Baer and Ocon,
11:32Lindblad, Stroll's made up a place.
11:34Slow racing bull there.
11:35Oh, that's a lock-up as well.
11:36Now, that looked like a let somebody pass, didn't it?
11:39That looked like,
11:40did they have contact early on,
11:42or was that just let Max through?
11:44Yeah, Liam Lawson and Max Verstappen,
11:46who were teammates, of course,
11:47for a couple of races last year.
11:50We didn't see the start of that.
11:51Maybe we will.
11:52There is Oli Baerman,
11:54now ahead of Esteban Ocon for Haas.
11:57This is the advantage that Charles Leclerc has got out in front,
12:00and I don't think he's managed to extend his advantage on this opening lap.
12:04In fact, I get the feeling Antonelli is coming back at him a little bit.
12:07Yeah, a little bit of a lock-up there for Oscar Piastri.
12:10But we'll have to, we'll no doubt get a replay,
12:13but you could see Max had a massive slide,
12:15but actually it went round on him,
12:17and he just kept his boot,
12:18and as George Russell then gets a run alongside and past Oscar Piastri.
12:23Well, that was neat from George Russell,
12:25making his way up into fourth place there.
12:28Piastri's gained a couple of places from the start,
12:30but that McLaren still doesn't look super-speeding
12:32at the hands of Oscar Piastri,
12:34his teammate a little bit further ahead.
12:37But has Piastri saved a bit of energy boost here
12:39to try and fight this back on the next stage of the lap?
12:43The stewards are going to have a look,
12:45Colopinto and Hamilton,
12:46for that collision at Turn 11,
12:49where contact was made,
12:50and there were certainly bits of carbon fibre coming off.
12:52Yeah, I think they'd probably be looking at,
12:55Colopinto looked like he sort of thumped quite hard
12:57into the side of Lewis Hamilton,
12:59but we'll get a replay on that, no doubt.
13:03There's the gap between Antonelli and Norris,
13:05about eight-tenths of a second.
13:07The gap between Leclerc and Antonelli,
13:08about seven-tenths of a second.
13:10Currently, we're on lap three of 57,
13:13and it might just settle down a little bit now,
13:16but even if we had three overtakes on this lap,
13:18it would be settling down.
13:20That was the first lap,
13:21for the likes of which we haven't seen for quite some time.
13:24Down the back straight we go now.
13:26Charles Leclerc, the active aero,
13:29is reducing the drag,
13:30and all the cars have got that down the back straight,
13:33and then slams shut as they get the brakes on for Turn 17.
13:36Look at the yellow line they're about to cross.
13:38That's the overtaking line.
13:39If they're within a second of the car in front,
13:42and Antonelli was just,
13:45and so was Norris,
13:46they get extra power
13:48through the entirety of the next lap.
13:52Hadjar has passed Stroll,
13:54making his way from the pit lane up into 16th.
13:57Charles Leclerc hasn't led a lap in Grand Prix racing
14:00since the Australian Grand Prix.
14:01He's out in front currently,
14:03as we sit on board with Lando,
14:04Norris and Karun Chandok at Sky Race Control.
14:07Yeah, a bit of bad news for Lewis Hamilton.
14:09That damage you suspected, Martin, is true.
14:12They've just told him he's losing 10 to 15 points for downforce.
14:15So that is a good half a second,
14:17maybe even a bit more,
14:18on every single lap.
14:20And even worse for Lewis Hamilton.
14:21No further investigation.
14:23Colopinto, but causing a collision.
14:25Say the stewards down at Turn 11,
14:27they've given that as a racing incident.
14:29Yeah, and Lewis has been on the radio apparently saying,
14:32I can't race like this.
14:33He is racing.
14:34Leclerc on the inside,
14:35Antonelli on the outside.
14:37I thought for a moment he could try and get past Kimi Antonelli.
14:40Did, but Leclerc stays out in front,
14:43but there's just a couple of car lengths between them now.
14:46Does he attack down that back straight?
14:49Antonelli looks like he's got all the speed he needs at the moment,
14:52doesn't he?
14:52Oh, a little bit of oversteer through Turn 16 there.
14:54That means you can see the concertina effect
14:56as the Ferrari pulls away.
14:58They've gapped Lando Norris a little bit.
15:02Norris has got to stay on these two,
15:03and Antonelli with tremendous straight line speed
15:05goes to the inside.
15:07Surely he can get the job done from there.
15:09And it looks like he might just have done that.
15:12New leader, Kimi Antonelli, championship leader,
15:15leader of the Miami Grand Prix.
15:16But how much energy did he use from his battery
15:20in getting that overtake done?
15:21Answer, probably not too much,
15:24because he stays ahead into Turn 1,
15:26on the brakes, tops up the battery,
15:28and should be able now to pull ahead.
15:30I think he'll check out from there, Antonelli.
15:32He's got so much speed at the moment,
15:34and he loves this racetrack, doesn't he?
15:36And he loves his car at the moment.
15:37Now we focus on Leclerc and Norris.
15:41Verstappen is still just eight seconds
15:43off the lead, incredibly.
15:45Lando, stay with them, be patient,
15:47let them yo-yo.
15:49That is very good advice from Will Joseph.
15:52Let them yo-yo, you protect your tyres
15:54for the time being.
15:55Alex Albon up into ninth,
15:57we just saw that a couple of moments ago,
15:59overtaking Liam Lawson down into Turn 1.
16:01The lead three are on their way to Turn 11,
16:04and Charles Leclerc is on his way back out
16:06into the lead again.
16:07If Kimi Antonelli thought he was going to check out,
16:10well, check out that.
16:11Charles Leclerc retakes the lead.
16:13So Leclerc then gets the overtake facility,
16:16because the leader doesn't.
16:18That means he can keep more speed for longer.
16:21He's allowed to harvest an extra half milled,
16:24milled, whatever you want to call it.
16:29And that, megajills is what I'm looking for.
16:33For what it's worth.
16:34But that is why,
16:35that's what they were talking about there
16:37with the yo-yoing.
16:39Meanwhile, Liam Lawson's under a huge amount of pressure
16:41from Pierre Gasly.
16:42Max Verstappen's catching Colopinto.
16:45Leclerc from Antonelli,
16:46from Norris going into that hairpin.
16:48Norris is now putting pressure,
16:50and that is Isaac Hadjar into the wall.
16:52Isaac Hadjar thumps the steering wheel in frustration.
16:57Full safety car, of course, with that.
16:59But not for the time being,
17:01and Norris has got past Antonelli.
17:03Piastri can't get past Russell.
17:05We've got yellow flags waving,
17:06but the safety car, as yet,
17:08hasn't been called.
17:09So these drivers,
17:10free to go out and overtake,
17:12and Lando Norris has done just that.
17:16Overtake's mode has been disabled for the time being.
17:19Lando Norris up in the second place,
17:21and that looks like a virtual safety car
17:23that has been thrown.
17:25There's...
17:25Oh, and that's another car.
17:27Pierre Gasly has gone off at Turn 17.
17:32I'm glad he says he's okay.
17:34I really am glad he says he's okay
17:35because he's gone in quite hard
17:37into the tire barriers.
17:40Full safety car has been deployed,
17:42and Isaac Hadjar still sat in his Red Bull,
17:44still thumping the steering wheel,
17:46and I think he might have just clipped the wall
17:49going into Turn 14.
17:50And that's what's caused the problem.
17:52Yeah, and I think he's broken the steering arm,
17:54and then that's why he's gone straight to the wall
17:56on the outside,
17:58just clipped the inside.
17:59He's still angry with himself.
18:01We've seen this before with Isaac, haven't we?
18:03He really...
18:04That's how he gets it out of his system,
18:07sort of thrashing his car,
18:09but...
18:12Yeah, and Gasly and Lawson got together.
18:15It's a completely different incident.
18:18Gasly ends up upside down.
18:21Yeah, they...
18:22Yeah, he went complete...
18:23He went up on its side.
18:25We'll see that in a moment as well.
18:27So in a completely different part of the racetrack,
18:30we've had another incident,
18:31which was two drivers getting together,
18:34Lawson and Gasly.
18:35There is Pierre Gasly,
18:38forlornly walking away,
18:40and did Lawson get any damage from that as well?
18:44Well, Lawson was struggling.
18:45He'd been passed by Verstappen.
18:48He'd been passed by Albon,
18:50and he was starting to struggle a bit.
18:51I wonder if his engine was overheating a touch,
18:53and that was causing problems.
18:55But Gasly went round the outside,
18:57and then...
18:58Oh, they tangled.
18:59We'll show you a view
19:01when the World Feed gives us those pictures
19:03in a moment,
19:04but the best thing is that
19:05Pierre Gasly is walking away
19:07seemingly unhurt by that incident.
19:10Yeah, Gasly was on the outside,
19:11left space on the inside,
19:12but Lawson locked up
19:14and went into him,
19:15and that, when you get tyre to tyre...
19:17Now, here's interesting.
19:18The call has come now
19:20to get into the pits.
19:21Now, this is an early pit call here
19:23from Red Bull to Max Verstappen
19:25to get those hard compound tyres on.
19:27They think they can make a cheap pit stop
19:29and get Max some good track position,
19:32even though he might get swamped up
19:34a little bit by others for now.
19:36They've all got a pit to the moat out.
19:38What happened to Isaac Hadja?
19:40Yeah, you can see his front suspension's broken,
19:43and because he thumped the wall
19:45on the left-hand side just before that,
19:49and there's still some dust there.
19:53Still a bit of water down there as well
19:55after this morning's rain.
19:56That's under the flyover,
19:57and he's just a passenger there,
19:59unable to control the car.
20:00This is Lawson on the inside locking up,
20:02and he can't stop in time
20:04before Pierre Gasly is upon him
20:07and rolling over.
20:10It's surprising they didn't have more of them
20:12because when you've got sticky tyres
20:13like that meeting face-to-face,
20:15that is what flips a car over.
20:18So, it's basically Lawson moves to the inside,
20:22fair enough.
20:22Gasly goes down the outside,
20:24leaves a lot of racing room on the inside,
20:26but Lawson locks his brakes.
20:34I'm not sure there's a...
20:35I mean, Pierre Gasly couldn't have left any more space.
20:38That was completely fair enough.
20:40Liam Lawson's locked up,
20:41trying to defend the place.
20:43Here's the start.
20:45Antonelli, first phase seemed okay,
20:47second phase gets swamped by Leclerc,
20:48then he and Verstappen lock on the brakes,
20:51then goes through Leclerc,
20:52almost makes contact with Verstappen,
20:54he then spins round.
20:56Antonelli goes on,
20:57Lewis Hamilton off the track,
20:58the two McLarens scamper through,
20:59and Max Verstappen's going backwards,
21:01faster than he's going forwards.
21:02That was genius from Verstappen,
21:05absolutely genius.
21:06Not losing it,
21:07it's very unusual for him,
21:08but he was so desperate to try to take the lead.
21:11So, the reaction time,
21:13good from Kimi Antonelli.
21:15Yeah, it sort of bogged down a little bit,
21:16didn't it?
21:17Oof.
21:18So, he's locked up,
21:20but he keeps cadence breaking,
21:21so as not to flat spot the tyre too much.
21:23Max gets trigger-happy on the throttle,
21:25floors it again,
21:26does a complete 360,
21:28and carries on.
21:30This is going to be great.
21:32Don't look away from this.
21:34So now,
21:35Max is,
21:36he locks up a little bit,
21:38the Ferrari come up the inside of him,
21:40and Max sort of,
21:42panics a little bit almost,
21:44with Leclerc on his inside,
21:46Lewis goes across the curb.
21:48Sorry guys.
21:50Yeah, it's,
21:51well,
21:52it's so unusual for Max to make a mistake like that.
21:54He just got too punchy on the throttle,
21:57and I think he got a little bit alarmed
22:00by the Ferrari on the outside of him,
22:02but what he did next was genius.
22:07Well, this is Charles Leclerc,
22:09who disappeared out of sight
22:11after this moment.
22:14So much so,
22:15the camera didn't catch him
22:16and pick him up,
22:17was focusing on Kimi Antonelli,
22:19who was second,
22:19but the leader was a long, long way away.
22:22Verstappen apologizing for the incident.
22:24Let's have a look on board now
22:26with Lando Norris.
22:28Oh, I tell you,
22:29Max squeezed him a bit there.
22:30That's why Max went to the right.
22:32We saw him go to the right.
22:32I didn't realize it was to try and put Lando
22:35effectively in the wall
22:36if he wasn't careful.
22:37And that was the clever bit
22:39of correcting the car
22:41when it had done its 360
22:43and then sort of still managing
22:46to get some forward momentum
22:48and not get run into.
22:49And this is Colopinto on the inside,
22:52Hamilton on the outside.
22:53No further investigation,
22:54say the stewards.
22:56I think that's fair enough.
22:57Lewis Hamilton losing 15 to 20 points
23:00of downforce.
23:01That's not going to help his tyres much.
23:03Max Verstappen now with Liam Lawson.
23:05There's more rubbing
23:06as Lawson goes off the track.
23:10Liam Lawson might just have retired
23:12from this race
23:13after the incident with Pierre Gasly,
23:15which is under investigation
23:17but causing a collision.
23:18Carlos Sainz making moves
23:21up into ninth place
23:22in the opening few laps.
23:24And even he's finding it hard
23:25to stop the car at times
23:26when Max Verstappen
23:27coming down the inside.
23:29He pushed me off.
23:30He thinks he can do whatever he wants
23:32just because he's racing the midfield.
23:35Late braking for Max.
23:36Was it fair?
23:39Yeah.
23:40OK.
23:40I mean, it was Dan Deer stuff
23:42on the brakes, wasn't it?
23:43But there was no contact.
23:45He stayed within the race
23:49white line.
23:50And so...
23:51Isaac Hadjar.
23:53That's the racing balls
23:54of Arvid Lindblad
23:55that he's just overtaken.
23:57But he's now out of the race
23:59because of this incident
24:01where he clips the wall
24:02round about here.
24:08It just breaks the steering arm.
24:10Misjudged it by a matter of
24:12two inches.
24:14Yeah.
24:15It's...
24:16You kind of almost aim at it.
24:18It's a bit like Monaco.
24:19It's a bit like coming into
24:20the chicane at Monaco.
24:22We've got to look and see
24:24who else is going to come
24:24into the pits
24:25during this safety cup.
24:27Well, not many, to be fair.
24:28Ted Kravitz is down there.
24:30A couple to retire.
24:32So Liam Lawson,
24:33his car was damaged.
24:34They told him to come in to retire.
24:35So I'd imagine, Crofty,
24:37that might be a penalty
24:38in Canada
24:39for causing the incident
24:40with Gasly.
24:41Wouldn't you agree?
24:42So he might get a grid penalty
24:44for Canada
24:44because he hasn't finished this race.
24:46Nico Hülkenberg, we believe,
24:47has got a problem.
24:48He's in the pits as well.
24:49Bottas pitted
24:50for strategic reasons.
24:52And of course,
24:52we saw Verstappen
24:53in for strategic reasons.
24:55Makes sense to put him
24:56on the hard tyre,
24:57give him some strategy options.
24:59It's too early to pit
25:00for a lot of the others,
25:01but that's not a bad idea
25:03given that Verstappen
25:03was running P8.
25:05Karun, what have you got?
25:07That's right, Ted.
25:08I was listening on the team radio
25:09to the McLaren pit wall.
25:11Both drivers were asked,
25:12would you like to pit at this stage?
25:14And they both thought
25:14it was too early.
25:16A bit in fault.
25:16We have a cello frame
25:1720 minutes away.
25:19We keep an eye on it.
25:21Cello frame 20 minutes away.
25:24So the conversation
25:25that went back
25:25from Will Joseph
25:26to Lando Norris was
25:27do what the car in front does.
25:30Leclerc stayed out,
25:31therefore Norris,
25:31and everyone else stayed out.
25:33Yeah, Verstappen down in 16.
25:35The problem is God
25:36is the field spread,
25:38isn't it?
25:38When they get away,
25:39it'll be very easy for them
25:40by the time he gets through
25:42the pack
25:43to build a pit stop advantage
25:45anyway.
25:46And we've got Zach Brown
25:47now on the pit wall.
25:48So Zach,
25:49CEO at McLaren,
25:51that could have gone
25:53a lot worse
25:53at the start there.
25:55Lando Norris
25:55taking second place,
25:57Piastri moving up
25:58in the fifth.
25:58It was all going on,
25:59wasn't it?
26:00It was definitely
26:01an exciting start,
26:02an exciting race so far.
26:04So looking forward
26:04to getting the safety car
26:05in and getting back,
26:06getting the show back together.
26:08Any concerns with Max
26:09back there?
26:10I mean,
26:10he might damage his tyres
26:11with his adventures
26:13in the first corner or two,
26:15but any concern
26:16with him back there
26:16having a strategic advantage now?
26:19Not yet,
26:20but usually that comes back
26:21to bite you
26:22later in the race.
26:22but sitting here right now,
26:24I think we're comfortable
26:25with our strategy
26:27seeing when
26:28and if the rain may come.
26:29So looking at multiple things
26:30at the moment.
26:31I was going to ask Zach,
26:32as tempting as it might have been
26:34to take a cheap pit stop,
26:35are you thinking
26:36the weather radar
26:37could play a part
26:38in strategy more
26:39than getting rid of the mediums
26:41onto the hards today?
26:42Yeah, definitely.
26:43I think it might have rain
26:45in the next 30 minutes or so.
26:46It looks like it's kind of
26:47skating around the circuit,
26:49but yeah,
26:50that's definitely part
26:50of the consideration going on.
26:52Thanks, Zach.
26:53And we'll come back to you later.
26:55There's something
26:55I want to talk about
26:56here in the Controbras
26:57with Karina as well.
26:58So, is this...
26:59Two seconds.
27:01Oscar, there's a possible
27:02short shower on lap 25
27:04that could be heavy
27:06but not long duration.
27:10So you might,
27:11like Zandvoort
27:12that start a few years ago,
27:14you might just have to bear it
27:15on the dry tyres for a bit.
27:17So what's interesting
27:19is Anceli looked super quick,
27:21didn't he?
27:22Gets out front
27:23and then suddenly
27:24he's back to third.
27:25Is that just simply
27:26the overtake mode,
27:27do you think,
27:28that's going on there?
27:29I think so.
27:30I think he used a lot of energy
27:31to get right up behind Leclerc
27:33in the dirty air.
27:34They get past him
27:35and then it takes a lap,
27:37maybe a lap and a half
27:38to top the pack back up.
27:40The trouble at that point
27:41is he was not just fighting Leclerc
27:42but also Lando
27:43and I think that's the game
27:45that they've all got to play.
27:47And that also makes
27:50even more sense
27:51of the message to Lando
27:52of let them
27:53yo-yo around
27:55wasting their energy
27:57and don't join in
27:58and don't burn your tyres out.
27:59Yeah, you be patient.
28:01I mean, this part of the track,
28:02the back straight
28:02where we're going now,
28:03you use up
28:04a lot of your energy there.
28:06You are a bit of a sitting duck
28:08out of the hairpin
28:09going towards turn one
28:11because you're not topping up
28:12your battery enough
28:13to compete on even terms
28:16with those that haven't used
28:18as much boost.
28:18It is all tactical
28:19and strategic in 2026.
28:22Yeah, what they've learned
28:23I think this year
28:23is if you go away
28:25from the racing line
28:26and therefore the ideal line,
28:27your speed comes down a bit,
28:29not only are you slower
28:30coming out of the corner
28:31but you waste more energy
28:32to get back up to speed
28:34so they're having to think
28:35about their positioning
28:36in wheel-to-wheel battle
28:37also from an energy perspective
28:39not just momentum.
28:42Thanks ever so much, Karim.
28:4411 laps.
28:46We're on a lap 11
28:47of 57 here.
28:49Those that have dived
28:50into the pits.
28:51Liam Lawson
28:52and he stayed there.
28:54Nico Hülkenberg twice
28:55and he is going to stay there as well
28:58so they're also out of this race.
28:59Valtteri Bottas
29:00and probably more importantly
29:02to what might come later on
29:03Max Verstappen.
29:04Everyone else has stayed out.
29:06We're expecting a bit of rain
29:07in about 20 minutes or so.
29:09How heavy that is
29:10we don't know as yet.
29:12It might be a very short shower
29:14that you have to suffer it
29:15on the dry tyres even
29:17or you might need to come in
29:19and change to the intermediates.
29:21Safety car is going to come in
29:23at the end of this lap
29:24and we can get racing again
29:25and Charles Leclerc
29:26will be heading the field.
29:2883% chance of a safety car here
29:30and it's 100% in this race
29:32already
29:32and that's because
29:33there's such high speeds
29:34around the walls
29:36and it's a street circuit really
29:38but with sort of
29:39Silverstone speeds in places.
29:41Liam Lawson
29:42and Pierre Gasly
29:43will go and see the stewards
29:44after this race
29:44and they'll discuss
29:45the incident that took Gasly out
29:47where Liam Lawson clipped him
29:49and he went over
29:51and into the barriers
29:51and Isaac Hadjar
29:53is the other retiree.
29:54It wasn't wild by Lawson.
29:56It wasn't careless.
29:57It was...
29:59But he did lose control
30:00of his car.
30:01Yeah.
30:01Effectively.
30:02That is what the stewards
30:03will be looking at
30:03and he was given enough
30:05racing room
30:06so he failed to keep
30:08complete control of his car
30:09but it was far from reckless
30:11what he did.
30:12It just looked a bit spectacular
30:13the end result of it.
30:15Yeah.
30:15Kind of one of those
30:16accidental
30:17kind of clumsy challenges
30:18that in the Premier League
30:20yes they didn't result
30:21in a penalty
30:21but it might result
30:22in a penalty
30:22in Formula 1.
30:23Well he was being
30:24overtaken of course.
30:25It wasn't like he was
30:26lunging to overtake
30:27in that situation.
30:29Quite.
30:30Right.
30:31Charles Leclerc
30:31has the pack
30:32all just behind him
30:34and he's got to decide
30:34when to go.
30:37Now once upon a time
30:38he might have wanted
30:39to go before the hairpin
30:40with the safety car
30:42safely back in the pit lane
30:43but he might want to leave
30:44it a little bit later
30:45this year.
30:46Have we seen them here
30:46not go until almost
30:48to the start line
30:49in the pass
30:50if they can get away with it
30:51because they don't want
30:52to slipstream somebody
30:53all the way
30:54but he's gone.
30:55He has now
30:56and I don't think
30:58he went at an opportunist
30:59moment that no one
31:00was expecting
31:01but he's got a bit of a jump
31:03and he should survive this
31:04down towards turn one
31:05Lando Norris
31:06has Kimi Antonelli
31:07a bit closer to him
31:08in the turn one
31:09we go Leclerc
31:09Norris
31:10Antonelli
31:11Russell on the inside
31:12of Oscar Piastri
31:13Piastri almost leaves the track
31:14keeps his place
31:16and now Lewis Hamilton
31:17is going to put pressure
31:18on George Russell
31:19who thought an overtake
31:20was possible
31:20and now he's thinking
31:21defence here in Miami
31:23Russell stays ahead
31:24of Hamilton
31:25Colopinto 7th
31:26then comes Albon
31:27Sainz and Behrman
31:28I don't think that
31:29Lewis has got the downforce
31:30as he hasn't got the grip
31:32to start having battles
31:33like that unfortunately
31:34due to the damage
31:35on his car
31:36yeah George Russell though
31:37just for one moment
31:39thought Piastri
31:40was there for the taking
31:41and he could get him
31:42but he's going to have
31:43to think again
31:44down in 15th now
31:46Max Verstappen
31:46he's overtaken
31:47Lance Stroll
31:48he's on the hard tyre
31:49but that could see him
31:50through to the end
31:51of the race
31:51Colopinto putting Hamilton
31:53under pressure
31:54where they collided
31:54down at turn 11
31:56on the opening lap
31:56no collision this time around
31:58Sergio Perez
32:00is in 10th place
32:0112th place there
32:03and swapping bases
32:04with Lindblad
32:05that was the sofa day
32:06by Russell
32:07yeah
32:08so what that was
32:10was actually Piastri
32:11getting past Russell
32:12net
32:13because he started
32:14he restarted
32:15behind him
32:15so
32:16clearly
32:17Oscar
32:18in his very animated way
32:20quite upset about that
32:22flipping round
32:23the rear wing
32:24of Charles Leclerc
32:27at 180 wing
32:28and we can watch now
32:30as he gets on the bar
32:31and Lando Norris
32:31goes to follow him
32:32Verstappen 15th
32:33there's Portoletto
32:34on the outside
32:35Verstappen
32:36up into 14th
32:37here comes Lando Norris
32:39to our race leader
32:40but it's a 3 or 4 car
32:41leads behind
32:42into turn 1
32:43and Antonelli
32:44is sticking to the back
32:45of these two
32:46and keeping them
32:47very keen
32:47and interested
32:48so slippery track
32:50in sector 14
32:51so when there's a bit
32:52of debris
32:52a little bit of
32:53carbon fibre confetti
32:55down there
32:55we'll find out
32:56when we get round there
32:58but wow
32:59this looks like
33:00a really tense race
33:01unfolding here
33:02doesn't it
33:02there's so many drivers
33:04right in the picture
33:05and we'll keep an eye
33:06Verstappen already
33:07up to 13
33:08but I talked about
33:09field spread
33:09he's 10 seconds
33:10off the lead now
33:11yeah he's making his way
33:13through cars
33:14you would expect him
33:15to overtake
33:15but while he's doing that
33:16he is still being slowed down
33:17but nothing slowing down
33:18Lando Norris
33:19who goes around
33:20the outside of Charles Leclerc
33:21and into the lead
33:22of the Miami Grand Prix
33:23third leader we've had
33:24during the course
33:25of this race
33:26Norris now
33:27from Leclerc
33:28and Antonelli
33:29and now though
33:30Norris will be the one
33:31giving the overtake mode
33:32coming out of turn 17
33:34to those following
33:35there was the debris
33:36on the racetrack
33:37I'm in the
33:37wrong track mode
33:38guys
33:40keep an eye out
33:41not sure how old
33:43or fresh
33:43that message
33:44might be
33:45from George Russell
33:46who's
33:46fifth place
33:48and a second now
33:49behind Chiastri
33:49here's his teammate
33:50Kimi Antonelli
33:51gaining
33:52down that back straight
33:53on Charles Leclerc
33:54picking up that slipstream
33:56and now he thinks
33:57there's a gap down the inside
33:58on the brakes
33:59neat and tidy
34:00hugs that apex
34:01and up into second place
34:03action replay
34:04of how he overtook Leclerc
34:05before Leclerc
34:06trying a little bit harder
34:06to come back at him
34:07has he got some spare energy
34:09down the pit straight
34:10Antonelli goes to defend
34:12and Leclerc then
34:13will have a lovely sweep
34:14into the first corner
34:16and retakes the position
34:18I'm not sure
34:19turn 17
34:20is the best place
34:21to make an overtake
34:22in this current
34:23generation of Formula 1
34:25regulations
34:25might have been last year
34:26but this year
34:28you are giving
34:28your opponent
34:29and a chance
34:30to get back
34:32on terms again
34:33by the time
34:33we get into turn 1
34:34and that's exactly
34:35what we saw there
34:36while that was happening
34:37though it's allowed
34:38Lando Norris
34:39to ease out
34:39over a second clear
34:41of Charles Leclerc
34:42in second place
34:44that means Leclerc
34:44would not have
34:46overtake mode
34:46if it's like this
34:47at turn 17
34:48but Antonelli will
34:50but do you remember
34:52when I mean
34:53yesterday in the sprint
34:54when Norris
34:55got out front
34:55and Antonelli then
34:56is still having
34:58to defend hard
34:59against the Ferrari
35:00side by side racing
35:02this is great
35:04little tweaks
35:05to the regulations
35:05we're still seeing
35:06lots of passes
35:07in the opening stages
35:08of a Grand Prix
35:09and here's another one
35:10for you
35:10Kimi Antonelli
35:11up in the second place
35:13from Charles Leclerc
35:13Verstappen's in 12th
35:15Arvind Lindblad
35:15saying he was losing
35:16a bit of power
35:17he's being investigated
35:18for forcing another
35:19driver off the track
35:20with Sergio Perez
35:21and we're on board now
35:22with the Ferrari
35:23of Charles Leclerc
35:24that led the resumption
35:26of this race
35:26and is now down
35:27in third place
35:28and he is not making
35:29the gains
35:30on that Mercedes
35:31that the Mercedes
35:32was making on him
35:33last time
35:34they went down
35:34the back straight
35:35let's see there
35:35this is the detection
35:36line for overtake
35:37let's see
35:38if he can have
35:40a little
35:41you can see
35:41his battery depleting
35:42on the graphics
35:44there
35:44as they go down
35:45the pit straight
35:46and then as they
35:47break hard
35:47it starts filling
35:48back up again
35:49through the corners
35:51and what we've
35:53changed this weekend
35:53I think
35:54although this was a circuit
35:55that was going to be
35:55better for these
35:56latest power units
35:57but it's definitely
35:58smoothed things out
35:59a little bit
36:00hasn't it
36:00and we haven't mentioned
36:01Piastri and Russell
36:02for a while
36:03Piastri is extending
36:04his advantage
36:05over George Russell
36:06here in fourth place
36:07and Hamilton
36:08is right on the tail
36:09of George Russell
36:10Karun Chandok
36:11at Sky Race Control
36:12as Verstappen
36:12gets past Ocon
36:13and up into 11th
36:15Crofty
36:15just to underline
36:16your point
36:16about turn 17
36:17Will Joseph
36:19advised Lando
36:20I suggest
36:21you keep the boost
36:22for the exit
36:23of turn 8
36:23on the run down
36:24to turn 11
36:25and that's where
36:25he took the lead
36:26so I think you're right
36:27they're having to think
36:28of different places
36:29to overtee
36:30nothing wrong
36:30with that at all
36:31we can see now
36:33from the rear wing
36:33of Oli Behrman
36:34Verstappen catching him
36:35there goes Oscar Piastri
36:37and behind him
36:38Russell and Hamilton
36:39in very close proximity
36:41when Russell said
36:41I'm in the wrong
36:42strap mode
36:43it'll probably be
36:43safety car restart mode
36:44and he's not
36:45gone out of that
36:46and he's saying
36:46you haven't reminded me
36:48you haven't told me
36:48from the pit wall
36:49they might be sitting
36:51there thinking
36:51well you didn't do it either
36:52but it's a fair point
36:54there's a lot of people
36:55looking at all of that
36:56and George then
36:58but still under pressure
37:00so Lewis got a slightly
37:01damaged car
37:02but he's hanging on
37:03in there
37:04but it's
37:05I don't know
37:06my brain would fry
37:07trying to do what
37:08the drivers are doing
37:09driving the race cars
37:11at 210 miles an hour
37:12between the walls
37:13and second
37:14we're just working out
37:16how to use their battery
37:17better than the driver
37:19drivers around them
37:20Max Verstappen
37:21we're just watching there
37:23getting past
37:23Oli Behrman
37:24and Oli Behrman
37:25then going off
37:27going too deep
37:28down into that hairpin
37:30we've got a yellow flag out
37:32that might have been
37:32for Behrman
37:33just leaving the road
37:34momentarily
37:35but Verstappen
37:36is now up into the points
37:37he is 12 seconds
37:39off the lead here
37:41but a pit stop
37:41is going to lose you
37:4220 seconds
37:43and he might not need
37:44to pit again
37:46longest stint
37:47on the hard tyre
37:48last year here
37:49was 36 laps
37:50Max Verstappen's tyres
37:52are already 9 laps old
37:53but some of that
37:54obviously was behind
37:55the safety car
37:56just watch
37:57for Verstappen
37:58in the latter stages
37:59of this race
38:00yeah
38:00pit stop you say
38:0120 seconds
38:01he's 12 seconds
38:02off the lead
38:03so they'll be keeping
38:04an eye on him
38:05it really depends
38:06whether it rains
38:07a little bit later on
38:09or not
38:09but
38:10with Max's
38:11somewhat robust driving
38:13which upset the midfield
38:15he is making his way
38:17back through
38:17as we talk about
38:18Max Verstappen
38:19he has now been noted
38:21and will be looked at
38:22by the stewards
38:23for crossing the line
38:25at the pit exit
38:26you've got to come out
38:27wait till that line
38:28on the left hand side
38:29has gone
38:30before you can cross it
38:31and that could be a penalty
38:32coming Max Verstappen's way
38:34that's bad news
38:35it's a bit like
38:36pit lane speed limit
38:37it tends to be based on
38:39a fact
38:40rather than
38:41a feeling
38:43and he'll have a feeling
38:44that whatever he tries
38:45this afternoon
38:46might not be going
38:47his way
38:47but here's another
38:48overtake coming up
38:50Alex Albon
38:51this time around
38:52he goes a little deep
38:52Max Verstappen
38:53and Albon is going to
38:55fight this one back
38:56does so
38:56and almost
38:58clips a bit
38:58of that front wing off
39:00as Alex Albon
39:01protects his place
39:02ninth place
39:03and what a battle
39:04that is
39:05Ocon's been noted
39:06for a yellow flag
39:07infringement
39:07as Max Verstappen
39:09steams down the inside
39:09at turn one
39:10and says
39:11this time Alex Albon
39:12I would like to keep
39:12if you don't mind
39:14that place
39:15it looks like caution
39:16to the wind
39:17for Max Verstappen
39:18to me
39:18he's just lunging
39:19left right and centre
39:20sorting it out
39:21as he goes along
39:23Charles Leclerc
39:24getting all loose
39:25and Larry
39:26in his chase
39:26behind Antonelli
39:27and he's been passed
39:28now by Piastri
39:29he lost time
39:30as he went way too wide
39:32he's going to try
39:32and fight that one
39:33back again
39:34and it looks like
39:35he has done
39:35so third and fourth
39:36swapping places
39:38Leclerc and Piastri
39:39within the space
39:40of 200 metres
39:41and there's George Russell
39:42just closing up
39:43a little bit
39:44on both of these
39:45by a couple of tenths
39:46and Hamilton
39:46hanging in there
39:47and still getting
39:48the overtake facility
39:49as well
39:49so yeah
39:51we've got top seven
39:53Colerpictus seven
39:54top seven
39:55covered by
39:56nine and a bit seconds
39:58and yeah
40:00let's see
40:01let's see what the weather does
40:02but it's also
40:03what the
40:04what the batteries do
40:06isn't it
40:06it's how they
40:07how they're going to work that
40:08because Piastri
40:08it looks like the McLarens
40:10are better in race trim
40:11and
40:12and
40:12as we saw in the sprint
40:14and if you get clean air
40:15as Lando Norris proved
40:16yesterday in the sprint
40:17it is worth
40:18double the bonus here
40:20he is extending his lead
40:22at revolution of the wheel
40:23by revolution of the wheel
40:24two and a half seconds now
40:26science has got
40:26Verstappen right on his tail
40:28I said Ocon have been noted
40:29for an infringement
40:30so has Albon
40:31so has Alonso
40:32so much going on
40:33I don't know what
40:34Karun Chandnok's looking at
40:35but we can find out
40:36I'm looking at Max Verstappen
40:37coming out of the pit lane coffee
40:39I think he's going to be
40:40in trouble here
40:40I've had a few looks at it
40:41they actually widened the line
40:43didn't they
40:43they widened the pit exit
40:45for the
40:46for today
40:47for today
40:47for today
