00:17The Blue Jays are clearly underperforming in fact they haven't won a series since the
00:22first one they played against the athletics and tonight face a team that's lost five in
00:28a row in Milwaukee so let us send you to American Family Field here are the men who will call
00:33this game Dan Schulman and Joe Siddle Jamie each of these teams is banged up right now
00:40each of them has three significant hitters on the IL and Joe for the guys who are healthy
00:47it is not going to be an easy night here in this one if you're a fan of watching strikeouts
00:51tonight is your night on both sides of the ball starting with Kevin Gosman and the Blue
00:55Jays he's back looking like the Kevin Gosman his first two years in a Blue Jays uniform
01:00that ERA just over two but opponents hitting just a buck 50 against him but just two walks
01:05against 26 strikeouts he's throwing his splitter more than his fastball for the first time in
01:12his career and he's been outstanding at the bottom of the zone on the other side Jacob
01:16Mizorowski has a triple digits fastball we will see them plenty tonight and we'll see 100 102
01:23Blue Jays hitters are going to have to pick one he's got two very good breaking pitches as well
01:27I think as a hitter you have to try to get one of the fastballs hope it's not the top
01:32rail of zone
01:33those ones are tough to get to that one right there bring him down a little bit set your sights
01:37a
01:37little lower try to get him out of the game as soon as you can go get him hitters let's
01:43see what
01:43happens here tonight Gosman and Mizorowski the Milwaukee Brewers and the Blue Jays here at
01:47American Family Field as they open up this three game series all right so let's take a deeper look
01:55at these two first Mizorowski's strikeouts per nine you see it bottom right there 15.4 is number one in
02:03baseball and Gosman's bottom left 13.5 is number three in the game here is Gosman's manager on why he
02:12has been so effective you know I think Kev really for one his delivery has been so good since he
02:19you know the first day of camp and when that's good you know his command is good he's a he's
02:24getting
02:25ahead of hitters at the rate he usually does with the exception of maybe a little bit of a
02:30a couple months I think a couple years ago but when he's getting ahead of hitters he's really good
02:34and understands when to throw each pitch I think and where to throw each pitch and when Kev's at his
02:40best he's getting the fastball up fastball down and the splits kind of carrying the zone that's
02:44what it's been so far but delivery has been so sound and I think he really understands his game
02:51and he's doing a really good job of reading hitters and kind of what they're trying to do
02:55that is true he's made three starts the problem Madison the Blue Jays have scored a grand total
03:02of five runs for Gosman so clearly Schneider based on the lineup he's formulated for this one is relying on
03:08three hitters right at the top Clement Varsho and Guerrero to help out a little bit in that respect
03:14and they've got a tough test going for them too as you heard Joe just talking about with Jacob
03:17Mizorowski and when you look at his last start against the Boston Red Sox in their first couple
03:22of endings he was pumping 100 101 even touching 102 at times now as that game went on you saw
03:28the
03:28fastball velocity drop down now it's dropping down to a mere 98 99 miles per hour but it is dropping
03:34down a little bit but the hitters to me just have to figure out a way to get on time
03:39with that fastball
03:40and have the adjustability with their barrels to be able to get to some of those breaking balls
03:45you take somebody like Ernie Clement he can hit a pitch that's up over his head but he can also
03:49hit one
03:49that's practically bouncing I would not be surprised if you see Ernie going up there being aggressive
03:54early in the count Dalton Varsho in the two spot tonight when you look back at the series against
03:58the twins a lot of his hits came on fastballs at the top of the zone now they weren't coming
04:03in
04:03at 100 miles per hour but to me when he's making that type of contact I think you're starting to
04:07see strides in the right direction for him and for Vladimir Guerrero Jr the times where we've seen him
04:12struggle over the past couple of years has been with his timing and I would not be surprised if
04:17we see Mizorowski trying to throw those heaters on in on the hands to Vladdy to make sure that he
04:22doesn't get extended but at some point you can almost take a chance too if you know you're going to
04:26see one of those fastballs take a chance be okay with swinging and missing because this is a pitcher
04:31that's going to strike out over 13 batters a game so you're going to see those strikeouts but
04:36to me this is a game where this offense can take some of those chances to drive the ball hard
04:40elsewhere you might have witnessed the Yankees and Angels a night ago that was a wild one tonight
04:46started out wildly too how about this Mike Trout second batter of the game hits a home run off Ryan
04:53Weathers who whose dad David won a World Series with the Yankees in 96 next batter is Joe Adele
05:01he drives one out as well the batter after that is Jorge Soler and he hits one as two talk
05:08about a
05:08tough start yeah even had a chance to pick up the bats yet and you're already down by three and
05:12there's young Ryan saying I'm not playing for the Marlins anymore it's three nothing for the Angels at
05:18Yankee Stadium boy uh Kevin Gosman would love to see that kind of early run support wouldn't be great as
05:24he goes up against the Milwaukee Brewers tonight on sports that we've got the first pitch coming your way right
05:29after this
05:32red tag days are on now at your local Toyota dealer
05:37welcome to Rogers Blue Jays baseball on Sportsnet and welcome to American Family Field the home of
05:44the Milwaukee Brewers Dan Schulman Joe Siddle Hazel May and boy is it good news that there is a roof
05:50in
05:50this place there is severe weather in the area right now tornado warnings have been issued for the
05:57greater Milwaukee area for the next 30 to 45 minutes but the roof is closed they've also got
06:02panels they can keep open or closed obviously everything is shut tight right now and at least
06:09as of now it's play ball the Wisconsin native Dalton Varshow hitting in the two spot again tonight for the
06:16Blue Jays and hitting extremely well especially in that Minnesota series Jesus Sanchez batting cleanup again
06:22second start for Eloy Jimenez Brandon Valenzuela makes his fourth consecutive start Tyler Heineman
06:29feeling better the back spasms are subsiding but John Schneider giving him another day as you talked about
06:36just moments ago they will face one of the hardest throwers in the majors Jacob Mizorowski is a 24 year
06:42old
06:42right hander he's six foot seven he was a second round draft pick of the Brewers out of high school
06:47in 2022 debuted in the big leagues last season made 14 starts pitched to an ERA over four but the
06:54walks were up but so were the strikeouts and he's at it again this year in his last start against
06:59the
06:59Red Sox he pitched into the sixth inning but he walked four struck out 10 double digit strikeouts in
07:05two of his first three starts this year so are you aggressive you try to wait him out because his
07:10control can come and go a little bit we know Ernie Clement is always aggressive a guy with a big
07:14fastball and a guy
07:15who likes to hit a fastball to get it started tonight up and away ball one to Clement coming off
07:22a three hit game on
07:23Sunday against the twins Ernie has raised his average to 311 on the season
07:33and that'll miss outside ball two even if he's a little erratic with his command just to the first hitter
07:40does that maybe change the focus a little bit for the next guys coming up I think everyone's going to
07:45have the focus but I like your latter option make him be in the zone he can be erratic give
07:51him a chance
07:52to be erratic because it might not pay off in the first or second inning maybe he goes five instead
07:57of six or seven maybe he goes four instead of five just his second year in the big leagues and
08:01last year
08:02was only up for about half a season the 2-1 is popped way up in the air near first
08:08base
08:09jake bowers is in and in fair territory makes the catch for the first down of the ninth
08:15defensively behind the brewer's right hander luis matos gets the start in left field christian yelich hit
08:21the injured list today garrett mitchell in center and sal freelich in that gold glove
08:25in right field on the infield left to right david hamilton and joey ortiz on the right side another
08:31one bryce terang with that gold glove he can pick it also a platinum glove winner jake bowers at first
08:36base and behind the plate william contraris way inside ball one to dalton varsho
08:43as we mentioned of our show is a wisconsin native lives about an hour and a half west of here
08:48went to
08:48the university of wisconsin milwaukee not far at all from here
08:56and there's the first breaking ball and that one is not close so he's got a slider he's got
09:01a curve ball but second hitter in a row that he's fallen behind two and oh
09:14the swing there by bar shows it's fouled back within about two feet of joe siddle that was coming in
09:19hot that was coming in hot and it is two and one kind of glad it hit the wall in
09:25front of us dan
09:27might have saved a finger or two
09:32swings through a fastball two and two
09:36that's the pitch right there that i think blue jays hitters are going to have to get to the fastball
09:40that's more down in the zone in the middle area as opposed to the elevated one that top one is
09:45tough to get to
09:49down six seven with triple digit velocity
09:54and how the six seven comes into play is great extension down the mound so he's actually closer
10:01to the plate when he releases the ball than just about any other pitcher and that can make a hundred
10:05feel like a hundred and two it can play up a couple of ticks
10:13swing and a miss to get him two down
10:19well that blue jays are going to see a lot of that right there high
10:23heat and he just blows it right by varsho
10:32so a pop-up and a strikeout for the current first couple of outs of the night first time
10:36mizarowski's ever seen the blue jays didn't face him last year
10:39here's vladimir guerrero jr hitting 321 on the season
10:46outside for ball one davlady he's got one home run on the year
10:50getting on base a ton he's got a 446 on base percentage eight for 15 in his last four games
11:06and the slider is in there oh no a fastball forgive me a fastball at 97 looked like had a
11:11little cut on it cut to it you see he will cut across that fastball once in a while a
11:15lot of
11:15them will be away to righties into lefties that glove side of the pitcher
11:20you can see guerrero hardly striking out at all this year and a challenge coming early from the
11:27catcher william contreras who has been very aggressive and very good at this in recent games
11:35glad he's better
11:38this closer look is brought to you by spec savers and it goes the blue jays way so the brewers
11:43lose one of their challenges here in the top of the first
11:54that's a strike outside corner at the knees what can you do with that it looks like vladys
11:59thinking of challenging now
12:02two close pitches
12:07two balls two strikes the count
12:12and the pitch
12:14in the air to right field free lick is going back will make the catch shy of the track
12:20as miserowski has a three up three down top of the first
12:28tests
12:28pat murphy the manager of the brewers universally known as murph the national league manager of the
12:35year not only last year the last two seasons the brewers had the best record in all of baseball last
12:41year with 97 wins and one of the reasons is they've got one of the best second baseman in all
12:45of
12:45baseball in bryce terrain normally the leadoff man he's dropped down to three because christian
12:51yelich is on the il they're trying to figure it out on the fly right now with their lineup just
12:56like the
12:56blue jays are missing christian yelich andrew vaughn and jackson churio and tonight they will face kevin
13:04gosman well the kid jacob miserowski is going up against the veteran 35 year old kevin gosman he's in
13:09his 14th big league season his fifth with the blue jays making his first road start of the season and
13:16the
13:16walk strikeout ratio has been outstanding i think the one thing kevin's doing this year when he's using
13:22his slider more than the fastball to me he's got such a nasty pitch in that splitter he's using it
13:26more i think that's made his fastball better we'll see him dotted at the bottom of the zone at times
13:31making hitters very indecisive he is throwing his splitter 48 of the time this year the highest
13:38percentage of his career he misses outside ball one to south relic moved up to the leadoff spot
13:46so again they lost christian yelich on sunday to a groin injury he's going to be out several weeks
13:52drop to rang down to move free look up milwaukee's lost five in a row after they started the year
13:58eight and two and in those five games joe they've scored only 12 runs this is uh interesting pat
14:03murphy's club is one of those 80s style clubs they're going to pound it into the ground they're going to
14:08use their team speed they may have to do it even more now with some of the bats out they
14:13lead the majors
14:13and stolen bases with 24
14:18fastball that a free look swings under and it's one and two
14:23free look at 288 hitter a season ago he's hitting just 188 so far this year but again it's really
14:29early and just goes to show you that the blue jays aren't the only team that's struggling right
14:34now the brewers have lost five in a row the mets are really going through it right now you want
14:39to
14:39talk about a team going through it read a couple of stories about what the houston astros are going
14:44through right now they've been devastated by injuries in their rotation they've lost eight in a row
14:49there's all kinds of stuff going on around baseball
14:56the one two
14:58taken just low by freely that's a very impressive take based on how we've seen kevin pitch this year
15:05so clearly that's what the brewers hitters are thinking this is only the first one but that can
15:10be a team-wide approach and that's maybe when he sticks a fastball at the bottom of the zone now
15:17got in on his hands and it's popped up on the right side of the infield
15:22and it'll be clement with vladdy messing around beside him for out number one as we show you the blue
15:27jd fans tonight behind kevin gosman for the blue jays he's jesus sanchez back out in left field
15:32varsu and center nathan lucas gets the start in right and on the left side is okamoto and jimenez
15:38with those three gold gloves they were at second but he's a shortstop now clementin vladi on the
15:43right side and brendan valenzuela yet another start as dan mentioned heineman feeling better he's available
15:48if needed tonight but not good enough for the start did take some bp definitely feeling better than he
15:54did a couple of days ago so probably back in there if not tomorrow night the thursday afternoon
15:59here's one of the better catchers in the game in william contraris you can see the the offensive
16:05numbers he has put up early this season
16:11the brother of wilson contraris and milwaukee and boston played this past week and they got into it
16:19wilson contraris who had been a cub and a cardinal for many years in his career so no love lost
16:25with
16:26the brewers he got hit by a pitch grazed but hit by a pitch he took offense and his brother's
16:32the catcher
16:32for the other team but you know what it i mean that counts for something obviously but when you're
16:39wearing this jersey and i'm wearing that jersey you put all that stuff aside christmas dinner they might
16:44sit next to each other but not in april this guy's a good player though and he plays a lot
16:50he plays
16:51about as much as any catcher in the game gossman in front of him one and two and a splitter
16:58taken low
17:01two hitters two pretty good takes on kevin splitter at the bottom of his own just something to keep an
17:05eye on because that's when i think kevin will come back and try to use that fastball at the bottom
17:15one and a two to another one just slow that one was closer but it's three and two
17:25and obviously gossman has been at this long enough he picks up really quickly if teams
17:30are taking those splitters just below the knees
17:42the first base runner of the
17:43night for either side belongs
17:45to the Brewers and that'll bring
17:45up terrain.
17:45So the first base runner of the
17:57night for either side belongs to
17:59the Brewers and that'll bring
18:05up terrain to rank hitting almost
18:07300 hit a couple of home runs on
18:09Sunday against Washington his
18:11second and third on the season
18:13has really kind of grown into his
18:15power the last couple of years
18:17after the first two years he was
18:19much more likely like still a very
18:21good player but much more likely
18:22to line a ball here line a ball
18:24there.
18:30Contreras the lead being held on by
18:32Guerrero William Contreras does not
18:34have a steal on the season as to
18:37rang down in the hole and two that's
18:40an outstanding job by Valenzuela
18:42there barely caught the corner if it
18:44did probably outside off the edge but
18:46no challenge and that's where a
18:47catcher can really change the count
18:49it's own two right now instead of one
18:51and one.
18:51Well and they they're down a
18:53challenge already so you don't want
18:54to I mean almost almost assuredly
18:57they would never use another
18:59challenge here in the next few
19:01innings unless they're 200% sure and
19:03you've got your arguably best hitter
19:05at the plate too.
19:06Good job by Valenzuela though.
19:13The 1-2 check swing 2-2 that's where
19:18that conversation with the ABS
19:20challenge system everybody thought
19:21the catchers receiving pitches isn't
19:23going to matter anymore but it
19:24absolutely matters because if you
19:26only get two challenges you can still
19:28steal a lot of strikes throughout the
19:29course of the ballgame.
19:36outside a full count and the pitch
19:39count getting up there for
19:40Gaussman here in the first inning
19:43he got free lick but it was a deep
19:44count he walked Contreras and now
19:47it's a full count on terrain.
19:55Contreras not running and it's
19:57slashed foul down the left field
19:58line.
20:00back-to-back hitters in the lineup
20:01here in Contreras and terrain that
20:03are early in the season but they're
20:05walking as much as a striking out
20:06that's always a very good
20:07indication for the tough plate
20:09appearance they give you.
20:18Gaussman comes set again and
20:21another 3-2 and another foul off.
20:26This is where if you're Pat Murphy
20:28you don't know if you're going to
20:29get any runs at all here in the first
20:31inning but already this bottom of the
20:33first has to feel like a bit of a
20:34win for the Brewers given how many
20:36pitches they're making Gaussman.
20:37And I don't think he can put
20:38Contreras in motion because Kevin's a
20:40strikeout pitcher despite Terang being
20:42at the plate.
20:433-2 again and a swing and a miss to
20:46get him for a big second out.
20:49Well he went right back out there.
20:51Terang saw a lot throughout the course of
20:53the at-bat but he gets him on the heater
20:54away it looked like he was trying to come in
20:56but it worked.
20:59Strikeouts are brought to you by Subway.

21:12So two down and here's Gary Sanchez.
21:17Yes that Gary Sanchez.
21:19The same guy the guy who came up as a
21:22catcher for the Yankees had a big rookie
21:23season a ton of power.
21:25He's bounced around from team to team to
21:27team in recent years.
21:29With Christian Yelich who had been the
21:31primary DH going on the IL now Sanchez
21:34figures to get a lot of time in the DH
21:36spot for the Brewers.
21:39He's also the backup catcher and with
21:42Andrew Vaughn their first baseman on the
21:44IL he also had been acting as the backup
21:47first baseman that has not gone very well
21:49and I don't think they want to play him
21:51at first unless they have to but they do
21:53want to have the bat in the lineup.
21:55He is still dangerous.
22:00One one from Gaussman.
22:02Foul back into the screen one and two.
22:07In fact Gary Sanchez while playing first
22:09a few days ago after bobbling a ball
22:12tried to throw it as quickly as he could
22:14and as hard as he could to first base
22:16and hit his pitcher Kyle Harrison in the
22:19knee to the point where Harrison might
22:21miss a start.
22:25The 1-2 and it misses two balls two strikes
22:30Valenzuela wants a challenge.
22:33Did it catch the inside corner or not?
22:36The catcher is challenging.
22:38Home plate umpire David Rackley telling us
22:41what's going on and that misses inside.
22:43So now each team is down a challenge.
22:48It's tough because it's early to lose
22:50the challenge in the ballgame if you're
22:52Valenzuela.
22:54Quite the gamble he took there.
22:56He lost this one.
23:04Now the 2-2.
23:07A fly ball to left field.
23:09Backpedaling a couple of steps.
23:10Jesus Sanchez will make the catch
23:12and it's a scoreless bottom of the first
23:14for Gaussman.
23:19Here for what's next.
23:24Welcome back to Roger Center.
23:26Well George Springer doing his best
23:27to keep things in perspective
23:29just a few days after landing on the I.L.
23:32with that fractured toe.
23:34Now with the calendar still in April
23:36he knows this is the time he can afford
23:38to let that toe heal properly.
23:40Now the next day or so will shape what comes next
23:43but there's no denying he wants to get back out there.
23:47The hope is he'll only require the minimum 10 days.
23:49I want to play so if I feel good to go
23:52I'm going to try.
23:53I'll leave that up to Schneids and the staff
23:55but I'm going to try to push the envelope.
23:57Springer recalls the pain being intense
23:59but he still intended to take his next at-bat.
24:02That is until x-rays revealed the fracture
24:05and the medical staff just shut it down.
24:07John Schneider said it is important to keep Springer
24:10around the clubhouse
24:11so he doesn't feel like he's too far removed from this team
24:14and of course Dan leave it to Springer
24:16to give me the old reality check.
24:18He said it's just a bone.
24:20It'll grow back.
24:23Hazel thank you.
24:25So George Springer's going to be in the dugout
24:27at least for the next several days.
24:28Maybe at some point.
24:29I actually don't think he leaves the team
24:31like to go to Florida or anything like that
24:32like some of the other players have.
24:34He's here and I'm sure they love having his energy here
24:37and a direct quote from John Schneider
24:40when asked about Springer before the game was
24:42quote, he's feeling surprisingly okay.
24:45So that is good news in the short term.
24:49Again, maybe it's just the minimum 10 days
24:51or close to that.
24:53He actually could be eligible
24:55before the end of the road trip
24:57but if it's 10 days and a little bit more
24:58maybe when the Blue Jays get back home.
25:00I thought by 2026 Blue Jay health standards
25:04it was a bit of a positive day
25:07in terms of the information
25:08that John Schneider was giving out.
25:10Some of that centered around the pitchers.
25:12Trey Savage, Jose Barrios,
25:14Addison Barger has gone to Florida.
25:15He is going to begin baseball activities
25:17later in the week.
25:21One and two the count.
25:22Jesus Sanchez leading off the second
25:24against Jacob Mizorowski.
25:26And that is a base hit.
25:29He hits it the other way
25:31beyond the reach of the third baseman
25:33David Hamilton
25:33and Sanchez has a leadoff single.
25:36Well, that's one way to beat him.
25:38Just hit him where they're not playing.
25:39You know, that's a bit of an accident
25:40the way this ball gets in on him.
25:42See how deep it got at 98
25:43on the inside part of the plate.
25:45But he just shoots it the other way
25:47over the head of Hamilton.
25:49I would guess if Mizorowski had to do it again
25:51he would elevate that ball.
25:52Probably was trying to elevate that ball
25:54a little bit more.
25:55That's where pitchers have been going after Sanchez.
25:57Pretty good catch, right?
25:57You're not going to beat too much
25:59over that contact.
26:00Here's Aloy Jimenez
26:02DH-ing again.
26:03His second game as a Blue Jay
26:05went two for four Sunday
26:06against the Twins.
26:14So he figures to get the majority
26:15of the DH at-bats
26:17when Springer is on the I.L.
26:25very high with a fastball
26:27one and one.
26:33What we saw and I think you touched on this
26:35in his last start against Boston
26:36he was kind of ninety nine to one hundred and one
26:38his first three innings
26:39and it was more like ninety six to ninety eight
26:42in his last two plus innings.
26:44Now it's still ninety six to ninety eight.
26:47But the velocity
26:48and he admitted to some fatigue
26:50by the end of his start
26:51he's just 24 years old
26:53not even a full year in the big leagues
26:55his manager Pat Murphy said
26:57before the game today
26:58when you're a young pitcher
26:59there's a new challenge every day
27:08ahead of Jimenez
27:08one and two
27:13a long hold
27:14by Misurowski
27:18he took that right down
27:20to one second
27:21on the clock
27:22and I don't think it was Sanchez
27:24at first
27:24I think he was just trying
27:25to make him in
27:26is it the plate
27:26a little bit uncomfortable
27:27he might be playing games
27:29out there
27:29trying to manipulate that clock
27:31any way he can
27:32when the pitch clock
27:33first came out
27:33we heard
27:34pitchers talking like that
27:35try to work it to your advantage
27:38flipping down again
27:42he barely beat at that time
27:44he obviously can see it
27:50there are clocks
27:50behind home plate too
27:52so they're in full view of the pitcher
27:55no secret where he's throwing that fastball now
27:58it is going to be at the top of the zone
28:01find a way to get on top somehow
28:05the man is lifts a high fly ball to right
28:07but it is playable for Freelich
28:09and that's the first out here
28:11top two
28:21the slider is so hard
28:23that you can just try to stay on the fastball
28:25and maybe still get to that slider
28:27but you can't
28:28I don't think you can look spin
28:29because you're not getting to that 98 and 100
28:31if you're sitting on that slider
28:32yeah he's throwing fastballs 94 95
28:35one even clocked in at 97 according to StatCast
28:38here's Nathan Lucas
28:43and he does not get a fastball on the first pitch
28:46that's a slider
28:46it's not huge
28:47and it is 93
28:48but that was a slider
28:51he's got a curveball too
28:53that he'll throw a little bit more to left-handed batters
28:55and if you're going to hit the slider
28:56that's the one to hit too
28:57that was coming back to Nathan
28:59right in the middle of the plate
29:02he's had a tough time early in this season
29:06trying to find that stroke
29:11when you're having a tough time
29:12it probably feels like every at bat
29:14you're 0-2
29:15amazing isn't it
29:17but
29:18if he can do what he does best right here
29:20and make this a six or seven pitch at bat
29:22it'd be kind of mission accomplished
29:30strike three call
29:32boy that's kind of a slow and somewhat
29:35low key third strike call from David Rackley
29:38but it gets Lucas for out number two
29:40those are the things that happen also
29:42when you're scuffling pitchers make pitches like this
29:44this is the slower breaking ball
29:46starts out in the right handed batter's box
29:47and just comes back to catch the edge
29:50that's the curveball
29:52so two down
29:53and now Kazuma Okamoto
29:55gets his first look at Mizorowski
30:02Okamoto had a very good first few days this season
30:05but he has gone cold
30:06he is hitting 133
30:08four for 30
30:10over his last eight games
30:11that's a good swing right there though
30:13look for the fastball
30:14think fastball
30:16and if he throws the other one
30:17you may swing and miss wildly
30:19but that's okay the only way to hit the heater is to be ready for it
30:23same thing right there we're seeing more and more teams
30:25we've seen against Okamoto early in this season
30:27the fastball's away and up and away
30:29and then of course the breakers down on the way
30:31he's a pull hitter
30:32that's he's a home run hitter that pulls the baseball in the air
30:35and I think he's just really pulling off of the baseball
30:38while all of the pitches are away from him
30:41bad combo
30:43that one's outside of all in two strikes Mizorowski at a hundred and one on that one
30:54look over his left shoulder at Jesus Sanchez who began this top of the second with a base hit
31:01and now the one two to Okamoto it's a broken bat soft liner to second and that will retire the
31:08side as the leadoff single is left to board
31:11no score here in Milwaukee
31:15Brewers tomorrow on sports that one
31:20well as Joe told you right off the top of the show there could be a lot of strikeouts in
31:25this game
31:26these two guys are one two among qualified pitchers in the majors so far this year in strikeout percentage
31:33Mizorowski striking out almost 42 percent of the hitters he has faced
31:37Gaussman striking out better than 40 percent of the hitters he has faced
31:42there could be some big strikeout totals here tonight
31:45well you know Mizorowski does it with that fastball and we talked about the triple digits
31:49but that's his big swing and miss pitch Gaussman of course with the splitter
31:53different pitchers do it different ways
31:55schlitler with the yankees has the big fastball as well
31:59mackenzie gore relies more on the curveball
32:01so different strokes for different folks the one thing that kevin is so impressive is he really keeps the walks
32:06down
32:06and that to me that's ace stuff when it's low walks
32:10high strikeouts
32:11by the way if you're looking at if you were looking at today's game and you saw
32:15Gaussman with two different era totals it's because a correction was made
32:19remember when he hit the batter runner alex freeland bunted and he hit him going
32:23down the line hit him in the back originally it was called the fielder's
32:27choice no error on the play so we'll run that scored later when the inning was earned
32:32apparently just maybe today or yesterday that was changed to a throwing error on
32:36Gaussman and that made the run unearned so it lowered his era down to 156 entering the game today
32:44there's a ground ball past the mound and right to jimenez
32:47as jake bowers is retired for the first out here bottom two
32:52it's very important as a pitcher that you know where your defenders are behind you and he knows with
32:56a left-handed batter mr jimenez is going to be right behind that second base bag kevin does not
33:01even go for the baseball just let it go by you know you've got some gold in behind you
33:12one down here is the left fielder luis matos
33:17former san francisco giant he'll swing at the first pitch
33:20and pop one up for guerrero
33:23right near first base and after a lot of pitches in that first inning for gaussman great to get a
33:29couple of quick outs your bottom two you love to play catch up like that 25 pitches that first
33:34inning and he's hoping to catch up and get back on track here and you can do that with some
33:37quick outs
33:38especially first pitch
33:44now garrett mitchell the center fielder former first round pick back in 2020
33:50the 256 lifetime hitter he's at 278 this year he shows bunt pulls the bat back and looks at a
33:57strike
33:59that's always interesting maybe he wasn't planning on bunting it yeah i think he's just trying to see
34:03some pitches because it was right down the middle yeah doesn't want that pitcher to have that quick of an
34:13inning
34:14and now quickly it's oh and two it's tough when you're the third guy up in the inning and it's
34:20two batters go down that fast you almost have to take a pitch so you find yourself behind oh and
34:25one
34:25and before you know it you're down oh two to a strikeout pitcher and you haven't seen the splitter yet
34:33you did right there but he didn't chase it ball one
34:43mitchell getting most of the reps in center field with the brewers with jackson churio on the i.l
34:50out at least a couple more weeks swing and a miss he was not close to that one and that's
34:55a very good
34:56hitting for gosman picking up his second strikeout of the night
35:00both pitchers looking sharp in the early going no score after two
35:05another junior jay sunday presented by ontario honda dealers bring the whole family for a day of
35:11games artists and live performers and kids can run the bases just like their favorite blue jays
35:16following the game visit bluejays.com slash promotions to grab your tickets today
35:22the beginning of a long road trip for the blue jays got some blue jays fans and a buffalo bills
35:28fan
35:29here in milwaukee three here three in arizona three in anaheim
35:34here's andres jimenez
35:38who will take 97 for a strike jimenez off to a nice start hitting 278 a couple of home runs
35:45nine driven in
35:47hitting 351 against right-handed pitching
35:53you know with the acquisition of lenine sosa for the white sox who was on the roster available today
35:59you wonder if every now and again with a lefty on the mound does that mean maybe jimenez
36:04gets a day off here and there against a lefty ernie clement slides to short and there's lenine sosa
36:09just picked up from the white sox he can play second also some third some first
36:16strike three called and jimenez wants to challenge
36:20wow this was called a strike the batter is challenged early you have to be sure yeah
36:25they've already lost one
36:35and that is strike three and the blue jays are out of challenges in the third inning and that's one
36:43you've lost one it's early in the game it's not a high leverage situation there's nobody on base
36:48that's the kind of challenge that john schneider does not want to see his players take no and
36:54especially near the bottom of the order so early in the ball game and again these are conversations
36:58that are going to have to continue to happen i'm sure he's not overly pleased with that decision
37:07you know maybe you'd feel differently if they're runners at second and third or something like
37:10that but again early in the game nobody on base and i get it from a hitter's perspective but that's
37:15where you have to take that selfish attitude away and understand where you are in the ball game
37:19and it's oh two brandon valenzuela
37:25looks at a curveball for a strike and miserowskis out in front of one two
37:41swing and a miss and he has retired the first two on six pitches here with a couple of strikeouts
37:49this is what we're talking about his fastball he uses the top of the zone so much
37:53but he also yanks it across and pulls it glove side into the lefties away to the righties a lot
37:59not necessarily by design certainly works for him because it's such a good fastball
38:05top of the order ernie clement gets his second look at miserowski
38:11he went around says home plate umpire david rackley it's 0-1-1
38:17clement popped up to the first basement his first time up and that's what's going to happen if you go
38:21up looking for a fastball he throws a slider but that's okay i think you have to stay with that
38:25plan it's your best option to get to this guy slider at 95.
38:34i mean not that long ago if you had a fastball at 95 that was that was something now 94
38:3995 is like
38:40average in the majors and this guy's throwing a slider at 95
38:50lament lifts a fly ball to right center it's carrying a bit
38:53freelich is back and has to go to the track to make the catch
38:57but he hauls it in for the third out
39:03please discover this week's deals online or in the flyer welcome back we got some encouraging news
39:10on the rotation reinforcements on their way trey savage will pitch for the bisons in rochester
39:16tomorrow they're looking for four innings 65 70 pitches if all goes well base best case scenario
39:23yes savage could join the team in anaheim schneider calling it a definite possibility as for jose barrios
39:31dan uh he'll throw for dunedin thursday they're aiming for three innings 50 pitches his buildup could
39:37be expedited if everything kind of checks off the boxes barrios is a start behind the savage the good
39:45news is he is still not feeling any symptoms in that right elbow guys so as we mentioned thank you
39:52hazel a little bit before you know john schneider unfortunately for him and everybody has had to
39:56give out a lot of bad news about injuries and health recently but today was actually kind of
40:00encouraging so as hazel said for treya savage who will pitch in rochester for buffalo tomorrow
40:07it sounds like one maybe two rehab starts until he rejoins the team and jose barrios joe sounds like
40:15two maybe three until he joins the team and it's just so important there's been a lot of
40:21upheaval in the rotation they haven't gotten a lot of innings out of three of the five spots really
40:26other than gaussman and cease they're just looking for stability predictability just a chance to give
40:33the bullpen a a little bit more rest especially when you think about how this season was supposed to
40:38start with your five starters and of course we keep going back to that devastating injury to cody
40:42ponds that's a big miss you're really relying on gaussman and cease right now
40:47to your cheese will lead it off for the brewers here bottom of the third he's their shortstop a very
40:52good defensive shortstop but has not hit mud much at all in the big leagues this year he's hitting 220
40:59he was acquired in the corbin burns deal with the orioles prior to the 2024 season
41:08it's a ground ball to third scooped up by okamoto who will make the play
41:15well as we mentioned the starters have not been giving the blue jays a lot of innings certainly not
41:20gaussman's fault certainly not ceases fault but even those two guys neither one of them has been able to go
41:25six in any of these last nine games but when you see a one and a two and another two
41:31and a two and a
41:32third i mean that's that's asking for trouble and granted some extenuating circumstances scherzer's forearm
41:38lowers illness
41:42but you really want to see that kind of a graphic with fives and sixes and sevens without ones and
41:48twos and i think kevin certainly can hold that down dylan sees wants to that's what's number one goal
41:53is to be able to pitch a little bit deeper be a little bit more efficient
41:57number nine hitter the former boston red sox player david hamilton
42:05the blue jays have been a little bit fortunate too in that they've had three recent off days
42:09tonight starts a stretch of 22 games in 23 days they need innings out of their starters
42:16that's where it can catch up to the bullpen's been excellent they were very good in that last series
42:21swing and a miss gossman gets hamilton for his third strike out of the night
42:29looks like that splitter might be fading away a little bit more than we've seen from kevin we've
42:35talked before about that grip he has on it ideally he wants that thing going straight down when it
42:40starts going away a little bit it can act like a little bit more like a change-up that's not
42:44his
42:44desired result but getting a swing and miss is top of the order sal freeland
42:52you know this early in the season when you're the number one guy the opening day startup as gossman was
42:57you're still usually matching up with the other team's number one guy that changes pretty quickly
43:02this team's got an off day that team doesn't but boy gossman does not seem to get a lot of
43:07run support
43:09this is luke to shallow right center field and a great effort by lucas but he cannot make the play
43:17and that will go as a base hit for freely
43:24just off the end of the bat so he didn't get it good at all lucas had a long way
43:29to come
43:30in right field it looked like he was going to land to the gap nathan was closing on it fast
43:34but just
43:35couldn't get there a matter of inches it goes as a base hit for freely
43:48again the brewers like to run a lot keep an eye on that freely does not have a stolen base
43:54this
43:54year as william contraris steps in but freely did steal 19 bases last year
44:01pretty good time to try too with two outs hitter already down a strike small lead not going swing and
44:07a miss oh and two
44:12once again gossman throwing strikes 43 tonight 43 pitches 30 strikes a little fastball heavy early
44:21on that pitch is in the zone more than the splitter runner goes and it's popped up
44:29for guerrero just back to first he'll make the catch in foul territory and another very good inning
44:34for kevin gossman both starters are dealing
44:40it paid out early with bet three six five
44:44welcome back dalton varsho struck out swinging in his first at bat facing jacob mizerowski he told me
44:51that we just cannot give away easy outs because you extend him further into the ball game so our main
44:58goal is to get to him and get him out of the ball game as fast as we can he's
45:03a really good pitcher and
45:04there's a reason why mizerowski was named to the all-star game with very limited experience varsho said
45:11we know he's a special talent we've got to be ready to hit that fastball guys hazel thank you he
45:17hasn't
45:17walked anybody tonight although joe he fell behind all three batters in the first inning but he came back
45:22to get them and he's only at 41 pitches through three yeah pretty efficient that's exactly what the blue jays
45:28want to do make him throw more pitches as dalton said problem is you also don't want to fall behind
45:35too much it's like facing gossman the last thing you want to get to do is get the two strikes
45:40varsho leading off the fourth
45:44big cut at that fastball and he fouled it off over third base when we hear the term get on
45:49top of a
45:50fastball clearly you're not getting up and chopping down to that pitch but the idea is to flatten that
45:56path out as much as you can at the top of the zone to get to it he's got great
46:00extension so he's coming
46:01down the mound and the ball is really getting on you quicker than it seems
46:12mizerowski a second round pick in 2022 out of a junior college crowder college just a handful of big
46:19league players have ever come out of prouder college
46:27another foul off over third base one and two
46:33and unsurprisingly mizerowski challenging
46:35varsho with the fastballs up in the zone so many pitchers tend to do and if you've got mizerowski's
46:40fastball why wouldn't you
46:46going to do it and if he's going to play
46:46lifted in the air to very shallow left field
46:49and it will be caught by mottos the left fielder coming in one down
47:01so so far just one base runner for the Blue Jays say Sue Sanchez had a single in the second
47:08Here's Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who
47:10flied out to write his first
47:11time there with a strike there
47:25it is again glove side away to
47:27the right of that side of the
47:28plate that's where the natural
47:31location of that heater goes
47:33catcher set up out there again
47:37he catches the corner with it
47:39it's 0 and 2 this is a much more
47:46locked into the zone Jacob
47:47Mizorowski than sometimes the
47:49Brewers see Guerrero bounces one
47:54to short big hop for Ortiz two
47:56down get game changing internet
48:04and Canada's most popular
48:05reliable internet Rogers Xfinity
48:07we got you back here in
48:12Milwaukee with Joe Siddle and
48:13Hazel May I'm Dan Schulman no
48:14score top four the roof close we
48:18mentioned there were tornado
48:19warnings in the area a little bit
48:20earlier it appears that maybe
48:22some of the rain is falling
48:25through the roof a little bit
48:26there might be a couple of small
48:27cracks Sanchez loops one down the
48:30left field line foul we saw Kevin
48:32Gossman when he came off the mat
48:33at the end of the third kind of
48:34looking up to the roof and then
48:36smiled and you caught it at some
48:38point you saw it as well like
48:41everything seems to be okay and
48:42the game's progressing and
48:43hopefully the weather outside is
48:44not too damaging too bad but a
48:47little bit of water in here it
48:48seems we think we're indoors we
48:51would like to be indoors there's
48:56that tough breaking pitch it's got
48:58the curveball and the slider and
49:00when you're doing that with that
49:01high 90s fastball you have to
49:02commit early and that's why I
49:03said you may look silly on some
49:04of the breaking balls but try to
49:06get to the fastball 0 2 takes
49:12that fastball high for ball one
49:14and I see that because he throws
49:15the fastball a lot this isn't a
49:17guy that's throwing it less than
49:18half the time he throws the
49:19fastball a fair bit you're
49:21generally going to get one or two
49:23each at bat off the glove of
49:29Contreras two and two Contreras
49:33looked like he had no desire to
49:35even catch that pitch he was so
49:36bad out of the zone up and away
49:48again now full what Contreras
49:52fired that ball back to the map
49:54you know that can be one of those
49:55things we're trying to motivate your
49:57pitcher like let's go get that ball
49:58back down the zone like a little
49:59pump me up sort of thing doesn't
50:01work for everybody you have to know
50:03who your pitcher is
50:09to center field and down for a base
50:12hit and Jesus Sanchez is two for two
50:17there's the fastball don't miss it
50:19Sanchez has done it twice tonight I
50:21went again riding in but he just
50:24gets it out of there and clears it
50:26at ninety nine on the inside edge
50:32so the Blue Jays have two hits and
50:34Sanchez has both of them and with two
50:37outs he's at first for Eloy Jimenez
50:39who lifted the fly ball to right
50:40field his first time on a slider and
50:44he fouled it off on one how hard would
50:49you say was the fastest slider that
50:52you ever would have faced oh my gosh
50:53slot the hardest slider is probably
50:55like ninety one ninety two that's that
50:57was extreme long time ago and this
51:00guy's hitting ninety five with his
51:01slide I remember being in double a
51:03and we were playing against Cleveland
51:05it was Canton Akron double a remember
51:07the name Rudy Cienez yeah that's the
51:09first time we heard a hundred he came
51:11out of the bullpen and it was the buzz of
51:13the ballpark I think it was the buzz of
51:14all of minor league baseball and I
51:15was with his fastball that's like
51:16yeah yes and you're probably talking
51:18nineteen ninety one I guess it was
51:20ninety one or ninety two that's when
51:22I first heard of a hundred triple
51:23digits the oh one and that is in
51:30there at ninety seven quickly oh and
51:32two on Jimenez so he's the kind of
51:34guy that might have had like a ninety
51:35one mile an hour slider but yes now
51:40it's a little bit more commonplace
51:41isn't it
51:43that guy he's got a lot of
51:51Jimenez digs in his Misarowski
51:53waits a glance at Sanchez.
51:59And the 0 2 to shallow right
52:03center field.
52:05It'll be Mitchell the center fielder
52:06to make the catch.
52:08And that base hit is stranded.
52:10There's still no score.
52:18Well, there sure have been some iconic home runs
52:21throughout the first 50 seasons of the Blue Jays franchise.

52:42Never mind, no home runs, no runs in this one.
52:45Scoreless going to the bottom of the fourth.
52:47Both Jacob Mizorowski and Kevin Gausman
52:49have been at the peak of their games.
52:52Here's Bryce Terrain to lead it off,
52:55and he rips it into right field for a base hit.
53:03Second hit of the night for the Brewers.
53:05Number three, Terry Jackson!
53:10Terrain is a guy, too, that you're not necessarily thinking
53:13he's going up, hacking at the first pitch.
53:15Kevin trying to get ahead with that fastball.
53:18Velocity way down on that pitch, too,
53:19and he gets to it easily on the inner part of the plate.
53:21And Terrain, five for six, stealing a base this year.
53:24Had 24 last year, had 50 two years ago.
53:28Here's Gary Sanchez.
53:32And Gausman will try to keep Terrain honest over at first.
53:43Bryce Terrain was the starting second baseman for Team USA
53:47at the World Baseball Classic.
53:54Blocked by Valenzuela.
53:56The other second baseman was Ernie Clement.
53:59Ernie started, I believe, one game,
54:01got a little playing time and a couple of others,
54:03but Terrain got the lion's share of the playing time.
54:07They lockered next to one another,
54:08didn't know each other at all.
54:11And Clement told me before the game today,
54:13like he and Terrain have become great buddies.
54:14He said Terrain was always a guy I kind of admired from afar,
54:18but never had a chance to meet him.
54:20And I said, what'd you guys talk about?
54:22And he said, well, he won the Platinum Glove
54:23at second base a couple of years ago,
54:25so I picked his brain about playing second base.
54:27Good idea.
54:28But the locker setup, Ernie told me,
54:31on that side of the clubhouse was Gunnar Henderson,
54:34Bobby Witt Jr., Ernie Clement, and Bryce Terrain.
54:37All the stars.
54:40And in Pat Murphy's office before the game,
54:43the Brewers manager,
54:45I asked him a question about Terrain,
54:46and he brought up Clement.
54:49And Murphy said that Terrain told him,
54:51what a great guy Clement,
54:52and none of this is news to Blue Jays,
54:53but what a great guy Clement is
54:55and how much he enjoyed meeting him
54:57and being his teammate.
55:00You know, the kind of thing you've got to,
55:01you've got a buddy for life.
55:03Very cool and very smart of Ernie.
55:05Why wouldn't you pick the brain
55:06of a Platinum Glove winner over there?
55:09Bryce Terrain has really turned into a very good player.
55:11Ernie told me between Terrain and Jimenez,
55:13who also won a Platinum Glove at second base,
55:15now the shortstop, of course,
55:17but he's got two of the best guys in baseball
55:19to talk to about playing second base.
55:24Two and two on Gary Sanchez.
55:27Terrain leaning but not going,
55:30and it's in the dirt.
55:31Now three and two,
55:32and we'll see if Pat Murphy starts the runner here.
55:40It's a gamble with a strikeout pitcher on the mound,
55:42but you can also maybe expect another splitter,
55:45which is a good pitch to run on.
55:47They may push the envelope a little bit
55:49for a team that's having trouble scoring runs.
55:51Might have to get creative.
55:52He's going.
55:54And it is ball four.
55:55So the Brewers have the first two men on
55:58here in the bottom of the fourth.
56:07Tough two on a pitch like that
56:09because as a catcher,
56:10you have to come up and get ready to throw.
56:12And you may block out the umpire a little bit,
56:15but obviously the pitch is just off the edge.
56:16Right, but if you had a challenge,
56:17that wouldn't be a problem.
56:19But again, the Blue Jays have used,
56:20have lost both of their challenges
56:22very early in this game.
56:25So now it's first and second.
56:26Nobody out for Jake Bowers.
56:29Getting most of the playing time at a first base
56:31with Andrew Vaughn on the I.L.
56:33Vaughn fractured the handmaid bone
56:34in his left hand on opening day.
56:36hopes to be back in early May.
56:40And the strike 0 and 1.
56:43You know, I think if you stack up
56:44Andrew Vaughn, Jackson Churio,
56:46and Christian Yelich on one side,
56:49and Addison Barger, Alejandro Kirk,
56:51and George Springer on the other side,
56:52I mean, both teams are without three
56:55of their most important offensive players.
56:59Pretty fair fight with all of them.
57:01Pretty fair fight with teams missing
57:03three of their top players.
57:08This is where, you know,
57:10Pat Murphy talked about that today.
57:11He's not asking for players to step up.
57:14He wants guys to do what they do.
57:16Start trying to do more than you're capable of.
57:18That's when you get more problems.
57:21A well-hit ball going a long way
57:25to left center, and it's gone.
57:30Jake Bowers got all of it,
57:33and the Brewers jump on top.
57:44Well, Jake Bowers isn't trying to do
57:47anything more than he's capable of.
57:49He can hit the ball out of the ballpark,
57:52and he gets a fastball.
57:53It looked like Valenzuela
57:54maybe wanted this more up and away,
57:56and you can see the reaction of the catcher.
57:58He left it right at the bottom of the plate
58:00in the middle of the zone.
58:01A lot of power in that bat
58:02from that left-handed hitting first baseman.
58:05That's already his fifth home run of the season.
58:09Filling in admirably for the injured Andrew Vaughn.
58:12And it is 3-0 Milwaukee.
58:18Going on a night where Jacob Mizorowski
58:20has been as sharp as he has been,
58:233 feels like a lot,
58:25but there is still a long way to go in this one.
58:29Luis Matos, the batter 0 for 1.
58:32And he's got a base hit.
58:36And all of a sudden,
58:37a lot of sharp contact off Gaussman
58:39here in the fourth.
58:43Well, he got Matos on a fastball
58:46in his first time up.
58:47He opts to go to the splitter this time,
58:50and again, middle of the plate,
58:51even though it's down.
58:53Good pitch to hit for a guy like that
58:55at the bottom half of the order.
59:03Might even be doing him a little bit of a favor
59:05if you throw that splitter for a strike.
59:09Matos can run a little bit.
59:11If Allen's rail has gone to the mound
59:12for a conversation with Gaussman.
59:15And now it's going to be Garrett Mitchell,
59:16the center fielder.
59:17Still nobody out here in the bottom of the fourth.
59:28The eighth time in his career
59:30that Kevin Gaussman has faced the Brewers,
59:32but kind of surprisingly,
59:34he's never pitched here.
59:36The previous seven were all with
59:38whatever his home team,
59:39his team,
59:40happened to be at the time
59:41at their home ballpark.
59:45Ball one.
59:46Ball one.
