00:00taking his warm-ups and we're going to take a look at the Angels starting lineup.
00:04Zach Netto in the shortstop will lead off, then Charles to DH today batting second.
00:07Joe Adele in right field hits third.
00:10Oswald Peraza in third base.
00:11Vaughn Grissom, the second baseman, bat fifth.
00:14And then Nolan Shawnawell in first base will bat sixth.
00:16Bottom third of the order.
00:18Darneau behind the play.
00:19Josh Lowen left.
00:20And Bryce Teodosio is in center field.
00:23He's going to bat ninth.
00:23He made a great play in the ninth inning yesterday when he came in for defense in left field.
00:30And they will be facing Max Free.
00:33Four starts.
00:34This will be start number five, two, and a 1.93 ERA.
00:37Now let's check out the Nissan pitcher's scatter report on the veteran lefties.
00:41Well, he's fourth before, and he's not even a hitter, Michael.
00:43But his four starts this year have all been tremendous.
00:47Over six innings a start.
00:49He's keeping up no more than three runs.
00:51And he pitches off the basketball.
00:53You hear about all of his pitches, seven pitches.
00:55He controls them all, don't get me wrong.
00:57But everything is based off his basketball.
00:59He can hit the mid to upper 90s if he wants to.
01:02And in the yard, no home runs allowed this season.
01:04It's the kind of one that you read, Michael, just daring things to change.
01:08But you've got to remember Mike Trout.
01:10You've got to kind of pitch around him as hot as he is here in Yankee Stadium.
01:16Let's check out the Yankee defense, which is brought to you by your local Tri-State Genesis retailers.
01:21Bellinger, Grisham, and Judge in the outfield left to right.
01:24Rice, Chisholm, Caballero, and Rosario at third.
01:28JC Ascara behind the plate.
01:29And let's check out more on Rosario, the Car Shield defensive player profile.
01:34First game at third base in a max free start.
01:38And so far at third base with the Yankees, he's minus one outs above average.
01:44And you just had the feeling that they were going to go with McMahon every time free pitches.
01:49But McMahon has struggled offensively.
01:51He has just five singles on the season.
01:54So they're going to go with Rosario.
01:56And I hope that Rosario makes the plays behind free.
02:02So Zach Neto took total blame for the drop pop-up in the ninth inning yesterday.
02:06He said, I'm a shortstop. I have to make that call.
02:08That was a catch that should have been made.
02:10Open up the floodgates.
02:11Jazz Chisholm reached.
02:12Wells then walked.
02:14And then obviously the big hit by Caballero to win the game.
02:18Neto's ready.
02:19Freed's ready.
02:20Let's do it.
02:21Here in the Bronx.
02:22First pitch up and in.
02:23And we're underway.
02:25Will Little, the home plate up.
02:27Ryan Additon at first.
02:28Ryan Wills at second.
02:29And the crew chief, Lance Barksdale, is over at third.
02:39Now, I know it's not summer yet, but this is a summer day.
02:43This is a beautiful summer day matinee on April 16th.
02:46It's just a gorgeous afternoon in New York City.
02:50You better enjoy it, Michael.
02:51I just happened to watch the weather.
02:53We actually got on for the news last night because, you know, the game was so quick.
02:57Heiser in the 40s again on Monday.
02:58Really?
02:59Yeah, just for fun.
03:01Well, I'll be heading to Boston, so.
03:03Well, it's probably the 30s there, so.
03:06Not going far.
03:18Angels are nine and ten.
03:20The Yankees are ten and eight.
03:27Pitch upstairs.
03:29Two and two.
03:38Yankees trying to win this series three games to one.
03:41Coming up next for the Yankees, it will be the Kansas City Royals.
03:45And they are struggling.
03:46They've lost three in a row and six of eight.
03:49And there's strike three as Neto is down.
03:51Looking at it, he is challenging the call.
03:54The battery is challenging.
03:56ABS powered by T-Mobile.
03:57Let's see what it shows.
04:00Bad challenge.
04:01It looked pretty good.
04:02It tried to achieve.
04:04It was pretty much spot on in the strike zone.
04:10Well, 0 for 1, Michael.
04:12Remember, game 1, they lost all their challenges, like in the second inning.
04:16Let's check out Will Little.
04:18The umpire scouting report brought you by your local Kia dealers.
04:21He's considered neutral.
04:22Only one before that was overturned.
04:25Ten challenges of calls of Little at home plate.
04:28That's pretty good.
04:30I was going to say, the umpires, you're really going to see a true number.
04:34It's almost like a batting average.
04:36You know, the guys that have challenges and have good numbers.
04:42What?
04:43There's a strike to Trout.
04:47At Yankee Stadium, Trout has done very, very well.
04:53In 33 games, he's hitting 344 with 12 home runs and 25 ribbies.
04:58But, Paul, if this doesn't tell the story of Trout with the Angels, the Angels record in those 33 games,
05:049 and 24.
05:05Yeah, it, uh, you know, he has been out there just kind of playing to a level nobody else does.
05:11But, uh, it hasn't shown up in championships.
05:14It hasn't shown up in playoffs.
05:16And, you know, it's the thing about baseball.
05:18You can't have one star player.
05:20You've got to have a good team.
05:23Yeah, you put one star player on an NBA team.
05:27They might not win a championship, but they're going to be so much better.
05:30Yep.
05:31But this guy only comes up, what, four or five times a game?
05:33A star player doesn't change the, uh, the calculus on a baseball team.
05:42And they had two of the greatest players of the generation for six years in Otani and Trout.
05:47And still, they couldn't do it.
05:49Yeah, you've seen so many teams put together that way.
05:52And, you know, with just the star power.
05:54But the surrounding players, because of financial things, you just don't surround them with a good enough team.
06:03Three-two.
06:05Fly ball.
06:08Judge goes toward the line.
06:09He's there to make the play.
06:11Round number two.
06:17That's a sigh of relief.
06:18I mean, it seems like every time he comes up, there's somebody on base, and he's putting one in the
06:22seat.
06:23So, you know, Max Freed, I'm sure, kind of went over things.
06:26Do we need to change things?
06:28Something has to be done, because Mike Trout is killing it.
06:32Here's Joe Adele.
06:33He's been hitting the ball very well last nine games, hitting 359, 14 for 39.
06:40In this series, four hits and 13 at-bats.
06:46I was telling you, Michael, the other day, I was talking to him.
06:49Really nice guy, but I was watching some of the balls he was hitting in batting practice.
06:53I'm like, my goodness.
06:54I haven't seen any like this since Aaron Judge.
06:57And then I saw Stat from StatCast.
07:01He hit a ball in the minor leagues, which is the longest home run to this date from StatCast.
07:07514 feet.
07:08Wow.
07:09So, power's not an issue.
07:162-0 on Joe Adele.
07:24Now 3-0.
07:29So, Scar behind the plate, catching Freed.
07:42And that's a four-pitch walk.
07:44How about that?
07:49Now, I'm going to see what the Angels do when it comes to running.
07:52Because since the beginning of last year,
07:56Scar has only thrown out one of 23 attempted base steals.
08:02Angels not, I mean, no huge numbers stolen base-wise.
08:05I mean, Trout has a couple, Peraza has a couple.
08:08But other than that, you're right.
08:10The only reason they would start running
08:14is because of the numbers behind the plate.
08:16Right down the line, fair ball, it's gone.
08:19It is gone.
08:21A home run for Peraza, having a big series offensively.
08:26And that's the first home run allowed by Freed this year.
08:29And it's 2-0 Angels.
08:31Well, it looks like Peraza has something to prove here,
08:33just in the back of his mind.
08:35The Yankees, you know, this is, I got to prove that I used to be there
08:39and I did Malone.
08:40But it just looks so much more comfortable.
08:51Angel, Angelana has been very impressive in the series.
08:54Aggressive at bats.
08:58Here's Vaughn Grissom.
09:00And there's a strike.
09:03You see Max Freed trying to get that ball in
09:05and it's just out enough where Peraza's always been quick inside.
09:10And to be able to keep it fair means that your swing is
09:12getting to the inside part of the ball instead of hooking it foul.
09:16Slow roller, Freed, four gold gloves,
09:19fields and gets Grissom for the final out.
09:22But the Angels with the Peraza.
09:23Before they take a swing,
09:25the Angels are pretty much doing a bullpen day.
09:27And this is the Yankee lineup.
09:28Trent Grissom in center field leads off.
09:30And Judge and Bellinger.
09:32Giancarlo Stanton will clean it up.
09:33Ben Rice will bat fifth.
09:34Ahmed Rosario, the third baseman, bat sixth.
09:37Bottom of the order, Jazz Chisholm at second.
09:39Jose Camaero, the 2-1 walk-off double last night.
09:43He'll beat shorts off.
09:44J.C. Ascara is looking for his first hit of the year.
09:47He's catching and batting ninth.
09:49And it's Brent Suter on the mound for the Angels.
09:52Six games, 0-1, 2.03 ERA, a strikeout per inning.
09:56So let's find out more about Suter.
09:58Let's check out the Nissan Pitcher Scatter Report.
10:00Well, he likes to slow it down.
10:02His average fastball, 86.5 miles an hour,
10:05which is the slowest in the major leagues.
10:07But he acts like he's double parked, the old saying says.
10:10He pitches like he's the fastest worker in all of baseball.
10:14A little over 11 seconds per pitch.
10:16And who's next?
10:17Well, it's a bullpen game.
10:18He'll probably give you a couple.
10:20And then you start filing them in.
10:23So the lefty against the lefty, Grisham,
10:25as we start at the bottom of the first inning.
10:27Grisham, 3-for-10 in this series.
10:30First pitch is low 1-0.
10:36See Grisham's numbers, but he has the 11 ribbies.
10:39He's 4-for-12 this year with runners in scoring position.
10:44Now, since last season, Trent is hitting 176 against left-handed pitching.
10:51And in yesterday's game, Schmidt, the pinch hit for Grisham.
10:56So Aaron Boone has been aggressively using the men that he has on the bench
11:00for pinch hitting appearances.
11:01He wants to get the matchup that he prefers.
11:06Yeah, it was probably a surprise for Grisham.
11:08And a little of a hot streak.
11:09I mean, starting again against the lefty.
11:11It's just that Paul Goldschmidt is so good against lefties.
11:14In that situation, you know, he hit a line drive.
11:17And Pomerantz tough on lefties.
11:19And Aaron Boone just elected to throw, roll the dice and try to get a big hit.
11:23And then, as Caballero got the double, waiting on deck was a Med Rosario,
11:29a right-handed hitter to pinch hit for Ryan McMahon against the righty Jordan Romano.
11:36Grounded to second base.
11:38Grisham gets Grisham.
11:41One away.
11:42Well, check out the Angels defense.
11:43Brought to you by your local Tri-State Genesis retailers.
11:46Roe Teodosio, who's an outstanding outfielder.
11:49He's in center.
11:50Joe Della, right.
11:51Peraza, Neto, Grissom, and Sean Owell third to first.
11:55Travis Darnot gets his first start behind the plate.
11:57He's been a hoppy for the first three games.
12:00You know, Mike, you were talking about, you know, the game-winning run yesterday.
12:05And Rojas, you really got to get him props.
12:07Because you got to know as a third-base coach who is on deck.
12:11Is the matchup good?
12:12Are you going to score with a man on third, one out?
12:15And if you watch that play over and over again, Wells being in motion,
12:18he had just rounded second base.
12:21And the left fielder got the ball.
12:22So it was almost like he started there.
12:24And obviously, a perfect throw.
12:26He's out.
12:27But the ball was up the line just enough.
12:29So you just got to coach aggressively and hope that they don't make perfect defensive plays.
12:35And that's the way it ended up.
12:36Tell you what, when you watch that replay, all right, so the double goes to left center.
12:41Trout fields it.
12:42And I think that he never thought that Wells was going to try to score.
12:46And he didn't throw as hard as he could to Neto, who's the cutoff guy.
12:52And Neto was angled more towards second than toward home.
12:55And Neto made a pretty good throw home.
12:56But it was slightly at the first baseline.
12:58That's all they needed.
12:59Yep.
13:00Whoop.
13:01Drilled to left field.
13:03Going back low.
13:04He's on the track.
13:05Looking up.
13:06See ya.
13:07Another home run for Judge.
13:09His 89th first inning home run in his career.
13:13And it's 2-1 Angels.
13:23Well, when Aaron Judge gets hot, he's fun to watch, Michael.
13:26I mean, all hitters get hot at times.
13:28But all hitters will throw out some hits.
13:29When Aaron Judge gets hot, you don't want to leave your seat.
13:32Because probably one's going to end up in the seats.
13:35And he, like I said, that last home run attempt, really got it going for this series.
13:39Off to the races again today.
13:41Give us a little wink there, Eric.
13:47So he came into the day tied with Jordan Alvarez of the Astros.
13:51Leading the American League with 7 home runs.
13:53Now, Judge takes the lead with 8.
13:59Allen's lined in the left center field.
14:01That is going to be a base hit.
14:02Teodosio cuts it off.
14:04Going for 2.
14:05Big Bellinger.
14:06The throw hasn't been plenty of time.
14:092 away.
14:10All right.
14:10So, you know what?
14:11You hit the ball in left center field.
14:13Coach Bellinger, you've got good speed.
14:16Just like I was saying before.
14:18You run the bases as if they're not going to make a perfect throw, possibly.
14:22And that's what he did.
14:23Well, he made a perfect throw.
14:25Well, he's out.
14:25So, better here than last time he took the play.
14:28Good, right?
14:30Teodosio can go get him with anybody.
14:32A really good throw to Grissom.
14:34And Bellinger was out by a lot.
14:37There's a strike to Stanton.
14:42Stanton, 2 for 12 in this series.
14:44And he struck out quite a bit.
14:46That one right back to Suter.
14:49And that'll do it here in the first.
14:52But we talked about the heavyweight bout.
14:54Judge and Trout.
14:56Judge now ties Trout with four home runs each of them has in this series.
15:01This one, when it lands.
15:02It's 2-1 Angels as we go to the second.
15:05Nolan Shawnawell will lead off.
15:07And he pops up the first pitch.
15:09Rosario on the run.
15:10Foul territory.
15:12Near the seats, but it's about five rows back.
15:19You know, Michael, that's a good call.
15:21I just looked down there when you said that.
15:23I started counting the rows.
15:24One, two, three.
15:25Yep, right in the fifth row.
15:26Really?
15:26Yeah.
15:27Total guess by me.
15:28That's pretty good.
15:31Shaunawell, one for nine in this series.
15:34It'll be 6, 7, and 8 in the order.
15:37Left field.
15:39Bellinger.
15:40Fights the sun and wins the fight.
15:44One away.
15:46Play Fandos daily dinger for free.
15:48Every day for a chance at a profit boost if your selected player hits a home run.
15:52And here are the featured home run odds for today's players.
15:55Stanton with a home run.
15:56Plus 3-10.
15:57Ben Rice with a home run.
15:58Plus 2-70.
16:03Here's Travis Darnot.
16:05Logan Ohapi has started the first three games.
16:08Day game after night game.
16:09You give your regular catcher a rest.
16:11That's what the Yankees are doing with Wells and what the Angels are doing with Ohapi.
16:21Darnot, good veteran backup catcher.
16:24Noses roll.
16:42Darnot is 37 years old.
16:4514th big league season.
16:50As they say, he's modeled a lot of uniforms.
16:53Mets, Dodgers, Rays, Braves, and now the Angels.
16:58It's kind of a perfect job for, you know, like a veteran player and, you know, knows how to catch,
17:04knows how to play, and is not going to, you know, whine and cry when he doesn't play every day.
17:10Also signed a nice contract to be the backup catcher.
17:12Two years, $12 million.
17:15This is the second year of the deal.
17:17First year didn't go well.
17:18He didn't hit last year.
17:19197.
17:21A little hair coming out of there at the top of that helmet.
17:24See that?
17:27Tapped right side.
17:32Taps makes the play two away.
17:45Max Freed being very tough on lefties, obviously, because of his stuff and just his ability to throw the ball
17:51inside, breaking balls away.
17:53Only two left-handed hitters in the lineup for the Angels.
17:57Sean Ouell in right here.
17:59Low.
18:00Low.
18:01One for seven in the series, and there's a strike.
18:24One and one.
18:41You know, thinking about this, Paul, it was generally accepted after that first road trip.
18:45Oh, he judged off to a slow start.
18:47Mm-hmm.
18:47Well, it's April 16th, and he has eight home runs, and there's a lot of games remaining in April.
18:52He could be off to a great start in the first month.
18:54You're just so, I mean, last year he got off to that monumental start where, you know, he was hitting
18:59400 in home runs.
19:00But Aaron Judge is so confident, and why wouldn't you be with the talent that he has?
19:05You know, if he gets off to a bad week, who cares?
19:09He can throw up five or six home runs in a week, which he has.
19:12Yeah.
19:15Now he leads the Majors in home runs with eight.
19:23Count three and two.
19:28Teodosio is on deck.
19:54The Yankees' home run record, home runs through eight.
19:59Set in 2007, Alex Rodriguez hit 14.
20:06Pretty good start.
20:07Pretty good start, and you know, you want to prorate it.
20:10The Yankees have three games against the Royals coming up starting tomorrow, and then a nine-game road trip.
20:16Three at Fenway, three in Houston, and then three in Arlington.
20:23A lot of games for Judge to do more damage.
20:38Soft ground ball.
20:40Jazz Chisholm flips to Rice to get low, and Max Fried retires the end.
20:46And just Mickey Ripper scores yesterday, talking about it.
20:48He was a solid player, no doubt about it.
20:51His quotes was one where Reggie told him his IQ was 160 to 165.
20:57And Mickey looked at him and said, is that out of a thousand?
21:02Only these things happen in the field, and they last forever.
21:09There's also a story, and Willie Randolph has backed this up, that Mickey used to always go to George Steinbrenner,
21:19who advances on a salary for whatever reason.
21:21And he had gone up before a game, and George Steinbrenner gave him an advance and cash, and he put
21:29it in his back pocket of his uniform.
21:32And he was trying to get to second on a hustle double, and all the money fell out of his
21:39pocket.
21:39It was all over the infield.
21:40Look at the slot machine out there.
21:42They're challenging, and the Angels challenge.
21:44The pitch is striking.
21:45And they challenge correctly.
21:50And Ben Rice goes down.
22:06Imagine the money all over, like, the infield.
22:08You know what?
22:09Now, there'd probably be hundreds.
22:11Back then, it was ones, right?
22:12Well, he remained face down on the infield because he was covering up the money.
22:16He didn't want it to blow away.
22:24Michael, Mickey Rivers is usually at Yankees fantasy camp, and he tells this story almost every year.
22:28And he wanted to stop and pick up the dollars.
22:30His teammates are screaming, run, Mickey, run, Mickey.
22:32You're trying to score.
22:33And he's on the ground trying to get those dollars kept in his pocket the rest of the game.
22:42Grounded third base.
22:44Peraza gets Rosario.
22:50Mickey Rivers was the name that Yankee last night.
22:52They got him from the Angels in the trade for Bobby Bonds, along with Ed Figueroa, who came over to
22:59the Yankees.
22:59Look at that.
23:00Do you see that glove?
23:02Sealed Saranac.
23:03Mm-hmm.
23:03Batting glove.
23:04And, you know, you'd only know that if you played in the 70s and 80s.
23:07It was, they had little wristbands on them, the Velcro, so they were kind of uncomfortable.
23:11So batting gloves have come a long way.
23:13But the first thing I noticed about that picture.
23:190-1 on Jazz Chisholm.
23:24Jazz kind of got a gift single in the bottom of the ninth inning on the pop-up that fell
23:30untouched by Neto and Peraza.
23:34You saw Mickey Rivers batting gloves toward that Velcro, and you see Jazz Chisholm, the relaxed look.
23:40You know, you don't even put the Velcro things together.
23:42It's just kind of wide open and comfortable.
23:45The batter is challenging, kids.
23:47That was called the strike, and Jazz Chisholm thinks it's not.
23:50Presented by T-Mobile, and Jazz is wrong.
23:53The pitch is a strike.
23:55So both teams have lost the challenge, and both the Angels and the Yankees have one challenge remaining.
24:12Still one and two.
24:16So Jazz has not been great with the challenge system.
24:20Five challenges, and only one call overturned.
24:27I'm wondering, as the season moves on, and if it's become clear that there's some batters that just aren't good
24:34at it,
24:34that managers say you can't challenge anymore.
24:37You know, Michael, it used to be, what, batting average, RBIs at bats on the back of your baseball card?
24:43And we're going to have pitches challenged.
24:45ABS challenge, yes.
24:50Well, there's a lot of variables, and you mentioned this earlier.
24:55You know, we told you, Will Little, coming into this game, was challenged ten times.
24:59One call was overturned.
25:00So that means that's a positive reflection of him.
25:10Jazz still looking for his first home run.
25:13He's got 18 games to start the season without a home run.
25:17His previous skid at the start of the season without a home run was six games.
25:24He did in 2020 and 2021, so he's tripled that.
25:38Almost hit him.
25:40Works the walk.
25:41And you just wonder, so much of this game is mental, Paul.
25:44Did Jazz put all the heat on himself and put himself behind the eight ball when in spring training he
25:50said he was going to be 50-50 this year?
25:52Well, you put those lofty goals.
25:53You can keep them in your head.
25:54That's no problem.
25:55But when you get them out there publicly, then you've got to live up to them.
25:58And, you know, to put those kind of goals out there, you better get off to a good start.
26:03Because, like you said, you know, you're not going to hit 50 until you hit your first one.
26:08You just have to really rationalize in your mind, you know, what a home run is.
26:13All right?
26:13Because if you try to hit it, and everybody goes through droughts.
26:17I mean, ten games or so, you start threatening.
26:18You know what?
26:19I haven't hit a home run.
26:20So, you would break it down.
26:21What is a home run?
26:22A home run is a good swing on a bad pitch.
26:25So, you can't force the pitcher to throw a bad pitch.
26:29And you can't force yourself to take a good swing.
26:32So, I used to always try that.
26:34And then I would go up and try to hit a home run.
26:37And then, you know, I'd step out of the box and say,
26:39didn't we just discuss this to myself?
26:42Didn't work.
26:46Runner goes.
26:47Ball foul back.
26:48Well, I saw there was a show where there was a baseball player talking to a guy named Kramer.
26:55He said, no, it's not easy to hit home runs.
26:57No, who was that guy?
26:58I don't know, but he was good.
26:59He had dark curly hair back then, too.
27:01Who was that guy?
27:02That guy's still getting checks for that line.
27:05Not a lot, believe me.
27:24The 0-2.
27:27Pops up in the air grab by Dorneau.
27:34I will tell you this, Paul.
27:36I don't compliment you that much, but I've seen that scene a lot because I watched Seinfeld rerun.
27:40You were really good.
27:42Is that right?
27:42Was it a lot of takes?
27:44No, we had two.
27:45I practiced a lot.
27:46I had no idea.
27:47You know, at the time, it was such a cool thing, obviously, because it was kind of revolving around George
27:53Costanza and the Yankees and all those things.
27:55So it made it fun to watch.
27:57But actually, we were playing the Anaheim Angels.
28:00And we were out in Anaheim.
28:02They picked me up in a car that morning, went to the studio.
28:06He was putting makeup on.
28:07Kramer came in, was acting crazy.
28:09I'm like, is he in character?
28:10And I'm thinking to myself, no, I guess he's just crazy.
28:13We did a couple takes, and I was back to the hotel.
28:17And I think Chuck Finley threw that night, which wasn't a good thing.
28:23I mean, just the way he says, how did you get in here?
28:26I mean, you used to say that to me, so I knew it was real.
28:29Yeah, that's right.
28:30It was a line I used a lot.
28:32Yes.
28:35That was a weird pickoff throw.
28:38Had a little loop to it.
28:39You're not going to get many players that way.
28:54There's a line drive to left field, falls in front of Lowe's, so a base hit for Caballero.
28:59He's starting to heat up a little bit in this series.
29:01He's four for 12.
29:03Yeah, he had a couple big hits down in Tampa Bay, which both of them in one game could have
29:08been game winners.
29:09And it ended up not.
29:10But it's really got him starting.
29:12You seem much more confident at the plate.
29:13A huge hit on last night, obviously.
29:15So he certainly is coming around offensively.
29:26He got good speed on the base.
29:27And you remember last night, Jazz not afraid to get in motion off second base.
29:35There's Escara looking for his first base hit of the year.
29:38He's 0 for 11.
29:45It's hard, you would think, for a backup catcher to keep his swing.
29:49I mean, you play pretty much once every five days.
29:54But that's the job, and you have to do it.
29:56Runners go.
29:57Good jump.
29:57Throw to third.
29:59Not in time.
30:00Double steal.
30:058th in stone base for Chisholm, 7th for Caballero.
30:09That's a good time.
30:10You've got good speed on both sides.
30:12Again, we were taught.
30:14Very difficult to steal third with a lefty at the plate.
30:18But Jazz with his wheels, a jumpy he got, you know, he's pretty sure he can get there.
30:23Now, he's got an opportunity to drive in two instead of one with a base hit.
30:31You know, one thing, Paul, he's on pace for over 50 stolen bases, so he's got that part right.
30:36That's right.
30:38Maybe he said that in the quote.
30:40It was either or.
30:41I'm going to hit 50 home runs or still 50.
30:43Yeah, I didn't hear that.
30:43No.
30:48Foul the way.
30:49He's on pace for 68.
30:52Nice.
30:54Just looking at Suter in the stretch.
30:58Have you ever seen anybody hold the ball that far from their body when they come to a pause there?
31:05Really seems to me like it would give the hitter an advantage to really see the ball well, way away
31:11from his body.
31:17Two and two.
31:19He's working from the extreme first base side of the rubber.
31:26That's really deceptive for a lefty because it makes him a light crossfire.
31:33I mean, you know, you're throwing it behind the left-hander where you just pick up the ball late.
31:40I've said it many times, Michael.
31:42I never understood how you get hit with sunglasses.
31:44It just didn't work for me.
31:46Your depth perception was off a little bit.
31:48She has Skara with the glasses.
31:51So Grisham on deck with the glasses.
31:55So J.C. has worked the count full.
31:58Yankees down 2-1 on the bottom of the second inning.
32:01Chisholm's at third.
32:02Caballero's at second.
32:03Good speed on the bases for the Yanks.
32:10It's a payoff.
32:14Foul ball.
32:17We told you there's a bullpen game for the Angels.
32:22This will definitely be the final inning for Suter.
32:28See how they piece it together after this.
32:37Right down the middle.
32:39And Ascara is down looking.
32:42No runs to hit.
32:43No errors.
32:43And two men left on base in scoring position.
32:46We go to the ball.
32:47The ball had dropped and thought to himself,
32:49we are winning this game.
32:50There is no way we are going to lose this one.
32:53That's at the stage for Jose Caballero,
32:55who eventually walked it off.
32:57And it seems as though there is something about clutch situations
33:00that just work for Caballero.
33:02So far this year, with runners in scoring position,
33:05two doubles, he's hitting 400,
33:07and he's driven in six in those spots.
33:09I asked Caballero what he likes about coming to the plate
33:12when the game is on the line,
33:14and he told me everything.
33:15He lives for those situations.
33:17When I spoke to Aaron Boone,
33:19what it is about his mentality that seems as though
33:21it brings out the best in him,
33:22and he said he loves the action.
33:24It is clear.
33:25He's confident.
33:26He's a guy that thinks he is the best player on the field
33:29at all times,
33:30and that certainly works for him.
33:32He said the bigger the stage,
33:33the more he seems to dig in,
33:35and the Yankees love it when he does.
33:38Yeah, it's good to have that clutch gene.
33:39That's for sure, and he seems like he does.
33:42The 0-2.
33:44And he knows, I mean,
33:46he sees Anthony Volpe around.
33:48He knows that Volpe today is going to play two straight games
33:50today and tomorrow,
33:51then be off and then play another two.
33:53And, you know, it's a matter of time before he's here,
33:54but that doesn't mean that Caballero just becomes a bench player.
33:58They intend to use him all around.
34:01So he can play a lot,
34:02just not have one position
34:04as Teodosio goes down on strikes.
34:05Yeah, I meant when we were in spring training
34:08to really get an answer of
34:09if Caballero gets off to an unbelievable start,
34:13you see Max Fried
34:14putting him away,
34:15the little cutter in on his hands.
34:16If he got off to an unbelievable start,
34:18is it just,
34:19you slide Volpe in anyway.
34:21He is your shortstop no matter what.
34:23But, you know,
34:24Caballero did not get off to a great start.
34:26He's had a great week now.
34:27So, you know,
34:29you have some decisions to make,
34:30but again,
34:31he can play a lot of position for you.
34:32Well, Paul,
34:34I asked Boone over the winter,
34:35what happens if Caballero is hitting 350
34:38when Anthony comes back?
34:40He said,
34:41let's see him hit 350.
34:43It's an easy way of saying,
34:44we'll see what happens.
34:48And he didn't say that
34:50as if he didn't think he could hit 350.
34:51He said,
34:51I'll make that decision
34:52where I have to make that decision.
35:02When Brian Casimoire asked about it,
35:04he said,
35:05that's a manager's call.
35:06He said,
35:06that's not a front office call.
35:09He said,
35:10Aaron Boone will decide
35:10how to use the players
35:11that are on the roster.
35:27Swings at the 3-0 pitch
35:31and Skye's at the center
35:33and Gershom puts it away
35:35and that's going to bring up Trout.
35:38Well,
35:39this is much more
35:40the way you want to face Mike Trout.
35:41Two outs,
35:43nobody on.
35:44If you get behind,
35:45you don't give in.
35:50Now,
35:51Trout's had a big series,
35:52Paul,
35:52and he's also commented
35:53that he's kind of changed
35:55his approach
35:56just a little bit
35:58up at the plate.
36:00Yeah,
36:00there's little things you can do
36:02as you,
36:03you know,
36:03you go through the game.
36:04You can tweak things.
36:05You can move your hands.
36:06You can move your feet.
36:08And if you watch this,
36:09all right,
36:10this is last year.
36:11Watch his back foot.
36:12Kind of stays there.
36:14Separates really well,
36:15obviously.
36:16Does everything right.
36:16He hits this ball
36:17out of the ballpark.
36:18But early in the year,
36:19you might feel as a hitter,
36:20you know,
36:21I'm not really staying back.
36:22So I got to do something
36:24to get back to that spot.
36:26And what he's doing this year
36:28is he's actually moving
36:30his back foot.
36:31Watch the back foot.
36:32There.
36:32Just a little reminder
36:34that he kind of separates
36:35a little bit more.
36:37Gets to that same spot,
36:39but he's back on,
36:40you know,
36:40he can really drive
36:41against that front side.
36:42And again,
36:43even the greatest players,
36:44you look at Mike Trout,
36:46continually tweaking
36:47with things to make him better.
36:50Usually that front foot
36:51is the trigger foot.
36:52It's almost like
36:53two triggers he has.
36:54Back and then front.
36:55Yeah,
36:56you know,
36:56if you look at that,
36:57you think he's worried
36:59about staying behind the ball.
37:02Now,
37:02and I watch
37:03when he starts
37:03like stomping
37:04that front foot
37:05where he's not light
37:06on it,
37:07you can tell he's,
37:08you know,
37:08he's not balanced.
37:09And when he is balanced,
37:11that's when he starts
37:12hitting the ball hard.
37:29And Trout works a walk.
37:35Now,
37:35there are some
37:36great players
37:38that change the stance
37:39all the time.
37:40Cal Ripken Jr.
37:41all the time.
37:42That only changes a lot.
37:43Yeah.
37:43Yeah.
37:44I mean,
37:44sometimes it can even be
37:46day to day.
37:47It can be year to year.
37:48But it can be,
37:50you know,
37:50I don't feel quick today.
37:51I better open up
37:52a little bit.
37:53You know,
37:53I'm pulling off,
37:54so I'm going to close
37:54a little bit.
38:03Drops a breaking ball
38:03in there for a strike.
38:040-1 on Adele.
38:23Sounds like a broken bat.
38:25Foul ball.
38:27And Adele's getting
38:28a new piece of lump.
38:41How about that?
38:42He got the new bat.
38:43Didn't put any kind
38:44of pine tar on.
38:45Nothing.
38:45Must have a lot
38:46on his gloves
38:46from the last one.
38:57He called that a pearl
38:58there,
38:58Michael.
38:58Just right out
38:59of the box.
39:00No pine tar on it.
39:01Nothing.
39:05Chasing back Trout.
39:26Soft ground ball.
39:29Jazz Chisholm fields.
39:31And gets Adele.
39:32And that'll do it.
39:34Round four
39:35of the heavyweight
39:36bout between Trout
39:37and Judge.
39:39And in the first round
39:40of round four,
39:41Judge hit a home run.
39:42He's because we might
39:43spotlight you
39:44in a future game.
39:45Little Max Freed.
39:51And Michael,
39:52I met little Max
39:53at the stadium
39:53the other day
39:54and he was so excited
39:55to tell me
39:56he was a lefty too
39:57just like the Max
39:58that we saw
39:59on the mound today
39:59or see on the mound today.
40:02Hopefully
40:03a little Max Freed's
40:05watching.
40:06Might be at school.
40:07He did add
40:08he doesn't have
40:08as many pitches,
40:09at least not yet.
40:11Working.
40:11Batteries challenging the pitch.
40:12That's called the strike
40:13and Trent Grisham
40:14doesn't think so.
40:15So he's going to
40:16challenge the ABS system
40:17powered by T-Mobile.
40:19The pitch is a strike.
40:21And it is a strike.
40:22The Yankees
40:22are out of challenges.
40:29Aggressive.
40:39Tell you what,
40:40I don't know
40:43why you would challenge
40:44the first pitch.
40:45I understand
40:450-1 count,
40:461-0 count,
40:47but you have one challenge
40:48remaining.
40:48Now you have none.
40:49So you can have
40:50bad calls against you
40:51late in the game
40:51and there's nothing
40:53you can do.
40:54Yeah.
40:54I mean,
40:55you're going to have
40:55to go over situations.
40:57Nobody on base.
40:59Lead off.
40:59I mean,
40:59this is not a time
41:00to challenge
41:01unless you're sure
41:01maybe with two strikes
41:02like you said.
41:03but, you know,
41:05God forbid
41:06that its base is loaded.
41:08There's a tough call
41:09end of the game.
41:14Well,
41:15they keep Suter in
41:16obviously to face
41:17Grisham here.
41:18Count three and one.
41:28And he ends up walking
41:29Trent Grisham.
41:36And I think
41:37that's going to do it
41:39as they'll call on
41:40Nick Sandlin
41:43one of the right-handers
41:44in the bullpen.
41:47So Suzuki
41:48has not yet signaled
41:50but he will in a moment.
41:53There's the clap.
41:54Takes the ball.
41:56Sandlin against Judge
41:56when we come back.
41:57Yankees down by one
41:58in the third.
42:00Come on, yes.
42:01It's brought to you
42:02in part by your local
42:03Ford stores.
42:03Probably the official
42:04SUV of the Yankees.
42:06And by Delta,
42:07the official airline
42:08of the New York Yankees.
42:09Delta, keep climbing.
42:14So Nick Sandlin
42:15first out of the bullpen
42:16in a bullpen game
42:18for the Angels.
42:19You see the numbers.
42:2019 games last year.
42:222.20 ERA.
42:24About a strikeout
42:25for a inning.
42:25So I'll have to face Judge
42:27hit his eighth
42:28homerun of the year
42:28in the first inning.
42:29His 89th
42:30first inning homerun
42:31in his career.
42:40Foul back.
42:47Well, you asked the other
42:48night, you know,
42:48what have they done wrong
42:49with Mike Trout?
42:50Well, you saw earlier
42:51in the game Mike Trout
42:52walked because there was
42:53nobody on base in front
42:54of him.
42:55And this is a great
42:56situation for Aaron Judge.
42:57As hot as he is
42:58by Grisham getting on,
43:00you know, you don't have
43:01a lot of wiggle room
43:03to try to pitch around
43:04Aaron Judge.
43:09Sandlin, 29 years old,
43:12side armor,
43:13and he started throwing
43:14that way in high school.
43:15Sixth big league season.
43:32Grisham is on first
43:33after the walk
43:34he's fifth in the
43:35American League
43:35in walk percentage.
43:37And he's at 20%,
43:39which is a great number.
43:41Rice is third
43:42at 20.9%.
43:48That's why we use
43:49the phrase
43:50under the hood.
43:52You know, Grisham
43:53coming into the game
43:54hitting 164,
43:56but his on base
43:57percentage is representative
43:58because he's getting
43:59on base so much
43:59with walks.
44:02Been a popular term
44:03so far this year.
44:04I've heard a lot this year.
44:05Under the hood?
44:05Under the hood.
44:08High fly ball.
44:09Left field.
44:12Low.
44:14Puts it away.
44:18Judge has four home runs
44:20in the series.
44:20The exit velocity

44:251-16.2, 1-11.4, 1-05.7,
44:29and 1-05.1.
44:32That first inning,
44:331-16.
44:34I remember that.
44:35That was an absolute missile.
44:38He just missed his
44:39fifth of the series
44:40right there.
44:41A little breaking ball
44:42with just enough adding
44:43where he got under it.
44:48Bellinger.
44:501-0.
44:52Laced a line drive
44:53in the left center field
44:54in the first inning
44:55cut off by Teodosio.
44:57Bellinger was thinking
44:58two all the way
44:59and not got thrown out
45:00by about three or four feet
45:02trying to stretch it
45:03into a double.
45:06Runner goes.
45:08Throw to second.
45:09Got him.
45:11Darnot throws from his knees
45:13and a good tag by Neto.
45:15You see now
45:16what they are teaching
45:17Major League catchers
45:18and that is to throw the ball
45:19towards the first baseline
45:21side of second
45:22which you tag the runner
45:24before he gets there.
45:25I don't know why
45:26it's taken this long
45:28but it really is effective
45:30if done well.
45:35You see his catch and tag
45:37as you go by
45:38and it makes it
45:39an easy call for the umpire
45:41before the runner gets to the
45:42base.
46:14And a walk to Bellinger.
46:41There's Stanton.
46:43High fly ball deep center.
46:45Teodosio back on the track
46:47at the wall.
46:48See ya!
46:49Into Monument Park.
46:51A two run shot for Stanton.
46:53And the Yankees lead
46:54three to two.
47:04Well 446.
47:06Okay.
47:06That's his second home run
47:07of the year.
47:08He went off the center field wall
47:09the other night
47:10but strikeout wise
47:12he's been struggling
47:12a little bit lately
47:13but you know
47:14he's such a veteran
47:15that he knows sooner or later
47:16one swing can turn things around.
47:18That's one of those
47:19one swings right there.
47:26Rice takes inside.
47:28I mean you just say this
47:30like ah it's just 446.
47:32I mean you don't realize
47:33446 is an absolute missile
47:36and it's not like
47:37Stanton hits high towering fly balls
47:39it's like
47:40Baylor and Borderline line drives.
47:43Pure strength
47:44is a ball right there.
47:56Now you saw the start
47:57this is 61st game
47:59where Judge and Stanton
48:01had homer in the same game
48:02the previous 60 games
48:03Yankees are 53 and 7.
48:07You saw that sidearm delivery
48:09and trying to throw a two seamer
48:11with you know
48:11a little action sinking away
48:13and it just kind of
48:14just spun right
48:15in the middle of the plate.
48:333 and 2 on rice
48:34who struck out looking
48:35in the second.
48:37Again, I can't imagine
48:40how fun it would be
48:41as a hitter to know
48:42that if you hit it good
48:44centerfield left field
48:45right field
48:45it really doesn't matter
48:46Aaron Judge Big G
48:48it doesn't matter
48:49if they pull the ball
48:50or if they go the other way
48:51if they make solid contact
48:53out in front of the plate
48:54it's gone
49:01a lot of power right there
49:02in that shot
49:04a lot of home runs too
49:11ground ball second base
49:13Grissom
49:14gets rice
49:15and that'll do it
49:17on a walk to Bellinger
49:19and that's Stanton
49:20who's been struggling
49:21crushes one
49:22into Monument Park

50:06in this guy
50:07a lot of people did

50:58Ground ball foul, and Rosario makes a friend.
51:23Now it looked in the first inning as if Ascara was calling the pitches,
51:29and now you can see Freed reaching to his left side,
51:34and he seems to be calling the pitches.
51:48Just missed.
51:51Remember, the Yankees do not have any challenges remaining.
52:08Got him.
52:11One away here in the fourth.
52:17Well, he's trying to get this cutter in,
52:19but he gets it up out of the strike zone as he gets under it,
52:22but he's trying to jam him with this cutter,
52:24but not able to get it in off the plate.
52:38And a strike to Vaughn Grissom.
52:43Grounded back to Freed in the first inning.
52:46Angels go home.
