00:00We're talking a little bit about combine draft stuff coming up film versus
00:06drills slash times film supersedes drills and times always lifted and lifted
00:15or leave it.
00:16Lift it.
00:17I think there's plenty of occurrences throughout the last few years where
00:22people put too much stock on on-field drills and what they're able to do
00:27outside of an actual football game.
00:29And it ends up burning them whenever they choose them high.
00:31And then they're not able to produce on the field.
00:33So on the field,
00:34that's the stuff that you're actually going to see on Sundays.
00:36You see it with like,
00:37I think Zach Wilson,
00:38whenever he had this crazy pastor in his pro day,
00:41everyone freaked out about it.
00:43Next thing you know,
00:43he's a perennial backup quarterback.
00:46You've seen it just over and over again throughout the years.
00:49If you put more stock in the film of what they're actually able to do whenever
00:52you're playing a game,
00:53then I don't see that situation occurring as much.
00:56So I'm definitely going to say on film tape is what's more important.
01:01All right.
01:02Do you?
01:02Okay.
01:03So,
01:03well,
01:03I agree with you.
01:04I think that there was a time where people just got enamored by times.
01:09They get enamored by numbers.
01:11I think we've seen enough and now they start calling them,
01:14you know,
01:15the combine warriors of guys who are elite athletes still.
01:19They can go out there and they can,
01:22you know,
01:22do two 25,
01:2340 times.
01:25They,
01:25you know,
01:26can bench or they can run,
01:28you know,
01:29four,
01:29four,
01:30depending on what your position is.
01:31Maybe you're a linebacker and you're running a four or five and you're
01:33whatever.
01:34And you're explosive.
01:36Your vertical is 40 inches or how 38 inches and your broad jumps,
01:40you know,
01:40over 10 feet,
01:42you know,
01:4211 feet sometimes.
01:44And you see those guys basically putting up sunny styles numbers.
01:46But the difference is,
01:47is that sunny has multiple years of really good film to back that up.
01:53And I think that there's been enough misses now where everybody looks at
01:57these metrics and it's like,
01:59this guy has this,
02:00this guy has this,
02:01he's got that.
02:02All of these things,
02:03check all of the boxes.
02:04Well,
02:05the reality is we're not just building a player here.
02:09Like the guy actually has to be able to play football.
02:11And so I will always go with the football player over top of the guy.
02:18Who's a great tester.
02:18And this is coming from someone who I thought I was a pretty good tester.
02:21Like I have good linear speed.
02:22I could broad jump 10,
02:23five.
02:24My vert wasn't awesome,
02:25but it was like 34 and a half.
02:26It was functionally as high as I think it could ever possibly be for me.
02:30You know,
02:31my pro shuttle,
02:32my L,
02:32like all those things are really good.
02:34But I was like,
02:35more importantly,
02:36like I just want to have good film.
02:38Like,
02:38so when you put on a game,
02:39like you felt this guy's presence.
02:41And I was asked of this,
02:44this will be,
02:46they start talking about Caleb downs and this will be our last lift or leave
02:50it with this is.
02:58I was asked yesterday during the comma,
03:00actually an interview with a group out of Washington DC on a Wednesday during
03:05pro day.
03:06And they asked about Caleb downs and positional value.
03:09And,
03:09you know,
03:09everybody's trying to figure that out.
03:11You know,
03:11he just plays safety and,
03:12you know,
03:13he's not the tallest guy in the world.
03:14And by the way,
03:15he didn't run a 40.
03:16So we don't know how fast he is.
03:18And I asked like,
03:19do you ever,
03:19you ever seen Caleb down,
03:20get Caleb downs,
03:21get out,
03:21run.
03:22No.
03:23Great tackler,
03:23elite tackler.
03:24With all of that.
03:26And so I will say this,
03:30lift it or leave it for you.
03:33I said,
03:33one of my coaches had referenced,
03:35you judge a defensive player by the distance they are from the football when
03:39the whistle is blown.
03:41Do you like that assessment for evaluating defensive players?
03:45Lift it.
03:45I like that very much.
03:46Exactly.
03:47Cause for me as a linebacker,
03:49I don't see myself ever having to do some of these measurables,
03:52like running a 40,
03:53unless I just got absolutely burned.
03:55So you never want to see a linebacker running full speed.
03:58And in this case,
03:59if you want to see a defensive player,
04:02like doing what they're supposed to do,
04:03then they,
04:04they don't have to be sprinting.
04:05Usually they should be on top of the ball,
04:07making a tackle.
04:07So yeah,
04:08I absolutely love that saying right there.
