00:00Sentence structure is important in English because it helps us clearly communicate our ideas to others.
00:08It's like arranging the puzzle pieces correctly to create a complete picture.
00:13If you don't put the pieces together correctly, the message or what you're trying to say might be unclear or
00:21confusing to the person trying to understand it.
00:24So in this lesson, you will learn the most common simple sentence patterns in English.
00:32First, let's talk about different parts of a sentence.
00:36Many sentences in English contain a subject, a verb, and an object.
00:42The subject is the person or thing performing an action.
00:47A verb is the action or state being described.
00:52And the object is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb.
00:59For example, David likes apples.
01:02David is the subject.
01:04This sentence is about David.
01:08Likes is the action.
01:10It's the verb.
01:11And the object is apples.
01:14Another example.
01:16She plays football.
01:18We have the subject, the verb.
01:20Football is the object.
01:22It is the thing receiving the action.
01:26Football is being played by the girl.
01:31Jason eats pizza.
01:33Mary reads books.
01:36And in all of these examples, we follow the most common sentence pattern, which is subject plus verb plus object.
01:45So we're going to look at more practice sentences.
01:49The chef cooks pasta.
01:52Dad is driving a car.
01:56The child eats bananas.
01:59The boy draws pictures.
02:02I encourage you to practice writing some sentences using this pattern.
02:08Now let's talk about some other common sentence patterns.
02:13Some sentences are very simple.
02:15They just have a subject and a verb.
02:18For example, the children are playing.
02:22The children is the subject.
02:24Are playing is the verb in the present continuous tense.
02:29Mom is baking.
02:31The girl ran.
02:34The girl ran.
02:35Here we have the subject, the girl, and the verb ran in the past simple tense.
02:42Another common sentence pattern is subject plus verb plus adjective.
02:48For example, the garden is big.
02:53We are describing the subject using an adjective.
02:58Jill is beautiful.
03:00The students are late.
03:04In all of these examples, the adjective is describing a characteristic of the subject.
03:13Another common sentence pattern is subject plus verb plus adverb.
03:18In the previous example, we used adjectives to describe more characteristics of the subject.
03:26But with adverbs, we provide more detail about the verb or the action.
03:32For example, the woman sings beautifully.
03:36Beautifully is describing how the woman sings.
03:41It's describing the verb.
03:43We're not describing the woman.
03:46We're describing how she sings.
03:48How she performs the action.
03:51Ben talks loudly.
03:54Grandpa eats quickly.
03:57Again, we're describing the verb with this adverb.
04:02How grandpa eats.
04:03Another common sentence pattern is subject plus verb plus noun.
04:11For example, the man is a farmer.
04:16Here we have the subject, the man, we have the verb to be, and we have a noun, farmer.
04:24And this noun provides more information about the subject.
04:29Often times, with this sentence pattern, we use the verb to be.
04:35Another example.
04:37They are friends.
04:40Bob is an uncle.
04:42Now, something that might be confusing to you is what's the difference between the subject-verb-object
04:50pattern and subject-verb-noun pattern.
04:53So, in an SVO, or subject-verb-object sentence, the verb is an action that the subject is doing
05:02onto the object.
05:04The object is receiving the action.
05:07For example, the girl painted a picture.
05:11Joe built a treehouse.
05:14And yes, picture is a noun, and treehouse is a noun.
05:20But this still follows the subject-verb-object pattern, because the object receives the action
05:29of the subject.
05:30In an SVN sentence pattern, subject-verb-noun, the verb often connects the subject to additional
05:40information about the subject itself, usually describing or renaming the subject.
05:47For example, the girl became a painter.
05:52Bob was a builder.
05:54Painter and builder are both nouns that describe the subject.
06:00The noun and the subject are the same.
06:04The girl becomes the painter, and Joe, in the past, was a builder.
06:09So, now it's time for our quiz.
06:12I'm going to read 10 sentences in total, and you have to identify the sentence pattern.
06:19We have subject-verb-object, subject-verb, subject-verb-adjective, subject-verb-adverb, and subject-verb-noun.
06:31Let's begin.
06:32The rabbit hops quickly.
06:36The teacher is kind.
06:40The artist paints a picture.
06:44The fish swims gracefully.
06:48He reads a novel.
06:51The garden is beautiful.
06:54She whispers softly.
06:58The musician plays the guitar.
07:02The babies are napping.
07:05He is a firefighter.
07:18So, let's identify these together.
07:21Number one is subject-verb-adverb.
07:25The rabbit is the subject.
07:27Hops is the verb.
07:29Quickly is the adverb.
07:31Number two is subject-verb-adjective.
07:35The teacher is the subject, is the verb to be, and kind is the adjective that describes the teacher.
07:44Number three follows the subject-verb-object pattern.
07:49The artist is the subject.
07:51The verb is paint.
07:54And a picture is the object that receives the action.
07:59Number four is subject-verb-adjective.
08:01Subject-verb-adverb.
08:02The fish is the subject.
08:04Swims is the verb.
08:07Gracefully is the adverb.
08:09Number five follows the subject-verb-object pattern.
08:13He is the subject.
08:15Reads is the verb.
08:17A novel is the object receiving the action of breeding.
08:21Number six follows the subject-verb-adjective pattern.
08:25The garden is the subject.
08:27The verb to be is.
08:29And beautiful is the adjective.
08:32Number seven follows the subject-verb-adverb pattern.
08:37She is the subject.
08:38Whispers is the verb.
08:40Softly is the adverb.
08:43Number eight follows subject-verb-object.
08:46The musician is the subject.
08:49Plays is the verb.
08:51The guitar is the object.
08:53Number nine follows the subject-verb-adverb pattern.
08:58The babies is the subject.
09:00Our napping is the verb.
09:02And finally, number ten follows the subject-verb-noun pattern.
09:08He is the subject.
09:10We have the verb to be, is.
09:13And firefighter is the noun.
09:16It's providing more information about the subject.
09:21So let me know in the comment section how many you identified correctly out of ten.
09:27I will admit it from the subject too.
09:27I would play the subject and the subject of purpose anyway.
09:27Here we will remain together unless you smile on the table.
09:27And I will be seeing them on the Zhi speed.
09:27I will remain and I will also be aware of those attributes.
09:27You may turn into a defender.
