01:03so
01:04before the break we were talking about the dj wonham signing uh who played last year in carolina
01:09and they basically gave him the el quede muhammad contract well it's up to it's there's obviously
01:14some incentives in here but kind of feels like they they traded the guy with 11 and a half sacks
01:18for
01:18a guy who's had a career high of eight sacks and isn't known to be some sort of real threat
01:25as a
01:25pass rusher so why do they like him better they like him better because he's a three down defensive
01:32end they like him better because he can stay on the field support the run and also get some pressure
01:39on the quarterback now his sack total of 30 sacks in six years is not going to blow you away
01:44for an
01:44edge rusher um but he's not he's not been counted on to be that guy he's he's the guy that
01:50stays in
01:51he had 42 combined tackles last year as high as 62 which he had a few years ago when he
01:57was with
01:58minnesota but his last four years starting with 2022 he had 38 tackles and 62 then 37 and 42
02:05his sack totals have gone from four to eight to four to three like we said nothing special but
02:11compare that to el kadeem muhammad who missed all of 2023 but played the last two years with detroit
02:18his sack totals went from three to 11 his total tackles were 11 and 25
02:25el kadeem muhammad was a was a pass rush specialist and he got a bunch of pressures on the quarterback
02:31last year so if you're building this team or rebuilding this team fortifying this team however
02:37you want to define it if you're if you're brad holmes it it looks like they value the complete player
02:43more than the specialist and you can say that's the right way or that's the wrong way or can't
02:50you find room for both well i mean we can get into the both part of it but let's let's
02:58look at the
02:58track record here with the detroit lions you mentioned they prefer the complete player compared to the
03:03specialist el kadeem muhammad last year played 457 snaps 353 were pass rush snaps okay so
03:13you know 70 something high 70 percent there uh 353 of 457 snaps pass rush snaps uh dj wonham played
03:22688 snaps 364 were pass rush snaps so about half like it's so he is he's considered a run stuffer
03:34and think of their pass rush only specialists they have one in james houston let him walk
03:40had one in zadarius smith let him walk and last year had one in el kadeem muhammad let him walk
03:48now the other possibility here is that this guy is the next el kadeem muhammad now he's a little bit
03:52more drop linebacker like i'm watching film of him it looked to me like he's going to do more of
03:57that
03:57outside linebacker kind of guy um but it's it's what they value okay so what they appear to value
04:08so i'm not sitting here trying to sell you on liking this you don't have to like it
04:13and you can complain away i will add this and and you know we've got uh the the beat reporters
04:20that cover the detroit lions do a really nice job in fact i was i was reading uh justin rogers
04:25stuff
04:26from the detroit football network and he sat down and watched all of dj wonham's run snaps and all of
04:31his pass rush snaps and it basically came to the same conclusion this guy's a really good run stop
04:36a pretty decent run stopper it's not as good in the in the pass rush game but he also predicted
04:42that they will sign another edge rusher and they will draft one okay all right so not done here well
04:50i hope they're not done because okay for two reasons a i've had my hopes up high for cameron jordan
04:56me too for for months now uh but also because i i think it's the right thing i think they
05:02need a
05:02pass rusher and one of them is clearly not a pass rusher and if you want them for the first
05:09if you
05:09for obvious rundowns or have them on first and second down and and okay and then take them off the
05:13field when it's third and long great but i need the third long guy gotta have him well that i
05:19mean
05:19again just just because justin rogers predicted but i'm gonna predict it too like i don't they're not
05:25done here i can't believe that they're done here espn uh just did a recent analysis of whether or not
05:30teams have answered their questions in free agency and alliance they said well yes and no and they
05:35wrote were any of these moves and you know we're talking about we're talking about borum we're talking
05:40about a query we're talking about uh um this this guy wonham and they write were any of these moves
05:46truly game-changing to take them over the hump on paper it certainly doesn't appear that way but gm
05:52brad holmes has always prioritized drafting and development over free agent spending
05:58that isn't as predictive as as justin rogers saying that they're going to do more i believe
06:03that they're going to do more and i'm comfortable with that but we're sitting here in a weird place
06:11where in lieu of anything else if you look at a current depth chart wonham might be listed as a
06:18starter borum as a starter mccreary as a starter like are and and that's because they very well
06:26might be if this is it well i don't is he is against another one yeah i don't need to
06:33start
06:33because of the injuries i don't believe this is it i really hope it's not i because i think the
06:40brad holmes specials i like to say all the time is is signing a free agent to a one-year
06:45deal for
06:45less than 10 million dollars right it's a brad holmes specialties they've been able to get these
06:49contracts and get them done all the time and this offseason is no different than all these contracts
06:54is handed out the only one that's multi-year deal i believe is the is the uh for the center
06:59kate mays
07:00right yes so everything else has been one-year deal there's a number of edge rushers not just
07:08defensive ends but edge rushers that are still on the market that i think can be had for a one
07:12-year
07:12deal for like eight million bucks or you could have had it for one and six with with a guy
07:17that
07:17just you just had last year but they chose not to they got one of them but one of them's
07:21not a pass
07:22rusher so he still has that that opportunity and because it's a one-year deal i think that they'll
07:27they'll get that done or at least i hope they get that done but my concern with brad holmes and
07:33i don't
07:33have many concerns i like brad holmes a lot i'm not on board as much as you are but i'm
07:37i'm very much
07:38on board with him my concern is though is that i don't know if it's tunnel vision but i think
07:44he
07:44he they they've said a number of times they don't fall in love with their own players but they fall
07:48in love with the guys they draft and they give them every opportunity to succeed until it's time
07:54to finally cut bait and realize okay this isn't going to work out josh paschal see you later but they
07:59gave him all the opportunities unzarike is another one who's getting all the opportunities and he just
08:05hasn't given you much so they're not spending the big free agent money on a free agent player what
08:10they're doing is just re-signing their own guys that they said have done enough and i'm worried
08:16about that because is that the tunnel vision that says that you know what i'm doing it my way because
08:21i've got my i've got the eye i know i saw these players i drafted these players i told you
08:26they were
08:26good and here we go i don't think it's completely that stubborn of an attitude but i'm wondering if i'm
08:32just taking one step in that direction is that what they what they're doing because they haven't
08:36had the track record of signing the free agent player to a long-term contract 248-539-9797 hunter
08:44is on 97.1 hi hunter hey good morning guys thanks for taking my call again i'm two for two
08:50called in
08:50yesterday so appreciate it but yeah to what you guys are saying brad's a great drafter and that's
08:55great but gm's jobs aren't to build good teams it's to win super bowls and our window is closing
09:02and it's it's no secret that we need an edge and he has done virtually nothing in his reign for
09:07the
09:08lions in free agency or a trade outside of outside of the golf trade that reset our franchise so we
09:14got
09:14our core from the draft but we need to make a move and it needs to be a big move
09:19you look at super
09:20bowl winners uh the aj brown aj brown trade for the eagles they went and got saquon and they they
09:25built their core through the draft with your your jaylen caught jaylen carter and jaylen hurt but you
09:31have to make a move and go get a game wrecker in order to put us back in our super
09:35bowl window
09:36thanks for taking my call i don't think i don't think the window's closing i'll start with that i think
09:40the window is open and and stays open because they have drafted so well and they've locked their guys up
09:47um it get the toughest move to make in football is the over the top move and because it needs
09:53it has
09:53to fit first of all there has to have access it has to have you have to have accessibility to
09:57the
09:57right player and what i mean by that is you have to be able to go out and get said
10:03player he has to
10:04be available you could say well the only move we need now is to add patrick mahomes right not the
10:09lions but right but you can't get patrick mahomes you know so you have to have accessibility to the
10:14player you have to have the right stuff to give up that that team wants you have to have the
10:19cap space
10:20like it's it's tough it's really really tough to make all those moves and make it work at the right
10:26time as far as i i would also disagree that he's made no moves in free agency that is i
10:32i don't know
10:33how you worded it i i think they've gone out and they've done significant things in free agency i think
10:38cade mays is a great addition i think alex anzalone was a great addition to this team i think anzalone
10:44is a little different because that's like at the embryonic stages of building this team as opposed to
10:48going out after it's been established and then go get the free agent i i don't think it's any
10:52different at all i think he went and got a free agent that helped this team win but fine uh
10:58and and he i thought dj reed was a significant addition but that didn't hasn't worked out
11:04necessary but that was a it was the top corner on the market last year according to many people
11:08i think he's done it with a little bit with dj reed and before that training for carlton davis
11:13you know that's a little bit of it and that's that's an attempt whether it worked or not you can't
11:17say
11:18he didn't i wouldn't say he didn't he hasn't tried but it's clear that he favors the draft but
11:23it's clear that he favors the draft i think you gave three criteria which were interested
11:26interesting in terms of how to get that player and that still may all exist all three forms of
11:33where it was the player's got to be available you've got to have the resources to get them
11:37and then got to the cap space do they for can they with restructure they definitely can they can
11:46make some bolder moves but then it it's it's you could go big right now you could certainly go big
11:54right now but it comes at a consequence that other moves can't be made like are you talking about max
12:02crosby yep well because because okay the player is a player available they they had him traded okay
12:12so let's say he is yep do they have the resources yeah they've got two first round picks they can
12:17give
12:17up and then really it's just the cost of doing business i'll give you okay is he worth two first
12:22round picks of course he is because the guy you're going to get 17 is not going to be max
12:26crosby right
12:27off the bat no so i'll give you the prices next year's first round pick as well okay fair enough
12:31take it and then what do they have the cap space they've got some cap space right now they do
12:36i mean
12:37his base it's likely earmarked for extensions they want to give them that's exactly it and that's part
12:41of what they'd be giving up but but that's what teams do yeah and it's 29 million dollar cap hit
12:49now there was that report that i hadn't seen that baltimore was going to do it i don't know if
12:53it's been
12:53verified that there was a easy restructure to take that cap hit down i am not against that move
13:00that's more of an all-in move that does start to close the window because you're likely to lose some
13:04players other players because of it so it doesn't come without a cost i i'm a you know i'm not
13:10close
13:11minded to that it just seems so unlikely that they would do it i don't even know if it's worth
13:16talking
13:16about but we do talk about it a lot don't we it's carson anderson 97 one
13:20you
