00:01Welcome to Chateau DIY Win The Dream.
00:04The ultimate renovation showdown.
00:06Whose idea was this?
00:08Come on, mine.
00:09Take me over here.
00:11Over four thrilling weeks, creativity meets competition.
00:14That looks wicked, doesn't it?
00:15Perfect fit, oh my gosh.
00:18As determined duos battle it out to prove.
00:21I'm having an absolute nightmare.
00:23They've got the vision, skill and grit to win the ultimate prize.
00:26I haven't got a clue.
00:27I can cry, I can literally cry.
00:30The keys to this breathtaking French property.
00:34Set on the outskirts of a Normandy nature park,
00:37the property boasts six bedrooms, four bathrooms,
00:42two salons, five additional rooms to renovate,
00:46perfectly pruned gardens, stunning outbuildings,
00:49its very own orchard and even a historic bread oven.
00:53There's a lot to play for and if we lose, I'll be fuming.
00:56Three heats and a grand finale where only the best will rise.
01:02All the pairs have to do is show they have the renovation know-how
01:06to impress me and various guest judges from Chateau DIY.
01:10I think this is really creative.
01:12What a transformation.
01:14In weekly challenges designed to push their creativity and skills to the limit.
01:19The clock is ticking.
01:20Win the week and they secure their spot in the grand finale.
01:24The dream is real.
01:25The stakes are high.
01:26This is Chateau DIY Win The Dream.
01:40This week, our contestants were put into teams.
01:43Sam and Elizabeth, I'm going to put you with Edward and Nell.
01:46And Saurab and Fernando, you'll be with Xavier and Tasha.
01:48And given €1,000 to renovate these chateau garages into entertainment spaces.
01:54What theme are we going to go for?
01:55Are we going to go kind of English pub vibes?
01:57Are we going to go kind of French?
01:59We're in a chateau in France.
02:01Are we going to go French?
02:02Yeah, absolutely.
02:03The yellow pair, Elizabeth and Sam.
02:05I think that's beautiful, that.
02:07Let me just stand back and look at it.
02:09That's nice.
02:10Just thinking, if you're walking into this room, you're going to see that.
02:13It's going to jump out at you.
02:14Have been teamed up with navy pair Ed and Nell.
02:17The plan is to make a tree-like wine rack.
02:21So this would go upright and the wine bottles will sit in it this way.
02:26Zav and Tash.
02:27This is the biggest mirror they have.
02:28I think it's a really cool statement piece.
02:30It is very big.
02:31It would cover the back of the bar.
02:33We're teamed up with a mint pair, Sarab and Fernando.
02:36The guy said he was going to be here, but he's nowhere to be seen.
02:39What do we do?
02:40They have been busy shopping.
02:41Oh my goodness, look.
02:4320.
02:44And building.
02:45They have it.
02:46There's like bits that we can use.
02:48On the third day of their renovation,
02:50I surprised them with their first ever petite challenge.
02:54Each week, I'll set a couple of petite challenges
02:56to test your ingenuity, creativity and ability to work against the clock.
03:00And the winners of the challenge were...
03:03Elizabeth and Sam.
03:06Fernando and Saurab.
03:10It's day four of the renovation challenge and our teams have a lot to do.
03:15Yeah, it's fantastic, yeah.
03:16Brilliant.
03:17Feeling good today.
03:18Ready to get stuck in.
03:20It's going to be good.
03:20It's going to be busy.
03:21The Burgundy and Mint team waste no time getting on with their renovation.
03:25We both feel so ready to get our hands dirty now.
03:29We are feeling confident.
03:30It's just a bit worried that we still have a lot of things to do
03:34and we don't have much time left.
03:35The Yellow and Navy team are just as eager to continue with their build,
03:39knowing what's at stake.
03:41Competing for a chance to progress to the next round
03:44to ultimately win this phenomenal French property in Normandy.
03:48I have been dreaming about painting actually all night
03:51and there is a wall that I'm going to sink my teeth into.
03:56I'm not close enough.
03:58Is it grey?
03:59I thought it was meant to be cream.
04:01I thought it was meant to be cream too.
04:03I don't really like it.
04:05Um...
04:06Nope.
04:07I'm with you.
04:09I mean, when it dribbles on it...
04:11It does put cream on the tin.
04:13Maybe it's just the drying.
04:14Maybe it's the drying.
04:16Trust the process.
04:17Trust the process.
04:17Trust the process.
04:19In addition to the main renovation,
04:21our teams have to build a custom bar
04:23to go into their entertainment spaces.
04:27The bar is really important because that is mentioned in the brief,
04:30so we've got to get that right.
04:32We haven't even started on the bar,
04:34which is the main part of the challenge,
04:35so that is the focal point of the day.
04:38Xavier picked up a very good wood that we got for free,
04:42but how we're going to make it work
04:44and how long it's going to take, that is the key.
04:47So I got this size of screw.
04:49Do you think it's good?
04:49Yeah.
04:50Anything long that will sit in the right place, yeah.
04:53Advertising manager Xavier and Fernando,
04:56who works as cabin crew,
04:57are really testing their skills
04:59to build their bespoke, upcycled pallet bar.
05:02Which side of the bar is going to be the top?
05:04This side.
05:05We'll attach the half pallet here.
05:07Oh, I see now.
05:08Yeah.
05:09Sorry, sometimes you need to visualise.
05:10This isn't secured down yet.
05:11I'm more of a visual person.
05:13I got you.
05:17We're going to have to be precise, assertive,
05:21and get things wrong quickly.
05:23Otherwise, we will run out of time.
05:27Doesn't want to go in.
05:30There she goes.
05:33After impressing me with his traditional French cleat yesterday,
05:36Chef Ed is keen to show off his other handiwork.
05:39Two big jobs I've got to get done.
05:41Trying to re-utilise this door panel in here.
05:47Put a shelf across it.
05:49And then that, essentially, is the construction of the cabinet done.
05:52I can just work on fitting the casters.
06:00Meanwhile, keen upcycler and creative buff Serab, a software engineer,
06:05is introducing leaf pressing into the mint and burgundy room.
06:10You won't believe I haven't done this before, this technique.
06:13Oh, really?
06:14Yes.
06:14I've just seen the videos online and I like to use stencil.
06:19Yeah.
06:20But because we don't have stencil here, so we have to emphasise.
06:23Yeah.
06:24Get creative of what we do have.
06:26Exactly.
06:27It looks really good.
06:31I've done, like, probably 70% now,
06:34so I just need to finish that side,
06:35and then we can stop putting the panels up, which is exciting.
06:39And then the ceiling will be finished,
06:40so I'm confident the ceiling will be done today.
06:44And it seems like the fascination with the ceiling
06:47is catching on next door.
06:49I am painting in between these lovely beams here,
06:52just to make the room feel even lighter, hopefully.
06:55And I'm quite pleased with how it's actually looking on this end here.
07:06We are creating a dark green backing to the sink,
07:10and that's because I'm going to apply some light-coloured wooden slats on top of it,
07:14and then that's going to create the backdrop to our nice jute coffee sack.
07:19So we'll be able to have this, like, really pretty feature behind the bar,
07:22which will just make the whole thing kind of pop a little bit.
07:26Tash has finished painting the ceiling and made a good start on the wall.
07:31And next door, Nell has nearly finished with her paint job too.
07:34Do you like it? Do you?
07:36Honest, grey.
07:37Are you looking at green here and grey?
07:39Yeah, yeah.
07:40It's just got that, look.
07:41I think I was thinking, like, dairy cream.
07:44Creamy, creamy.
07:46And that's what it kind of says on the packet, but...
07:49Yeah, yeah.
07:51Well, it's on now, so no return.
07:53Oh, that's good.
07:54But Sam is having second thought about one design element.
07:57I think for time management purposes,
08:01I might finish the ceiling now and not continue.
08:05Yeah.
08:05I've managed to do maybe two panels the way I wanted in between the beams.
08:10Yeah.
08:10But I could be here all week finishing this.
08:13Yeah.
08:13Is it really worth me carrying on?
08:15What do you think?
08:17I'm not being rude about your painting skills here,
08:19but it's going to need a lot of coats of paint.
08:22A lot, yeah.
08:23Maybe they won't look up.
08:26There was no doubt in my mind that we need to put a finish on that.
08:29They weren't rustic, charming beams.
08:33The underside of floor joists,
08:35I'd like to come up with a solution to have it finished.
08:44Finally, some visuals of the bar.
08:47Don't do it alone, I told you.
08:49It's a bit harder.
08:51You're going to have a husband with a bad back.
08:53You don't actually know where he got that.
08:57That is your bar.
08:59Can I just...
08:59It's the roll right now.
09:01OK.
09:01Can we...
09:02Sorry to be a pain.
09:03Can we move it, like...
09:06Just ever...
09:06Like, as close to the pipe as possible on that side?
09:09Just...
09:09I know I'm being fussy.
09:10I'm working with you, dear.
09:11I know I'm being fussy, but it's important.
09:13And then can we just...
09:13Yeah, that millimetre is definitely the key here.
09:15Yeah, and then can we just move that a few centimetres over that way?
09:18No, that way, please.
09:21The positioning of the bar is important because we need to make sure that when you're standing
09:25in parts of the room, you're not seeing things that we don't want to be seen.
09:29So I just want to make sure.
09:31It does look really, really beautiful, but it needs fixing in place because, obviously,
09:34it needs to be quite sturdy.
09:36It's up to you now.
09:37No pressure.
09:38She doesn't have the same.
09:39But it has to be right.
09:41Dusty!
09:42I'm going to sand it back.
09:44We feel like there is a lot of work with those pieces that Xavier found, but he is feeling
09:50confident that he can get it done to a good standard and he can do a good job, so we
09:56are just going to pack him up whatever he needs.
09:59At the end of the day, we are a team and we need to support him.
10:06Countertop is a massive risk for me because I've put myself on the line with it.
10:11There's been lots of tears, as we've seen.
10:13If it doesn't work out how I planned it in my head, then it could see us go home.
10:27As Nell and Ed aren't happy with Sam's idea to leave the ceiling as is, they've created
10:32a solution.
10:33So, can I just explain to you?
10:35Yeah, talk to me.
10:36You need three panels.
10:37Yeah.
10:38And that whole length is 590 centimetres.
10:41OK, so I'm going to do 600, so then you've got places to tuck either ends.
10:45OK, so you know how much to over.
10:51It looked a bit terrible.
10:52We really needed to move away from that agricultural garage feel.
10:57Yeah.
10:57Because it just didn't tie in with the rest of the design.
11:00But at this stage of the competition, we had to use what materials we had to hand.
11:04So the decision was made to use a couple of packs of dust sheets and actually, rather
11:08fortuitously, the colour quite matches quite well.
11:13If you're going to drape a ceiling, it's got to be absolutely perfect.
11:19It's not our taste.
11:30It's day five of the six-day challenge where our teams are busy converting two disused garages
11:36in the chateau into entertainment spaces.
11:39Whilst both teams faced disagreements yesterday, it's a new day and everyone is busy with the
11:44job in hand.
11:44I am so happy that I'm out here today.
11:47I know, it's lovely.
11:48For as long as I need to be.
11:49Perfect weather day.
11:51Today, I really feel we can, like, imagine ourselves here.
11:55We're competing for the rest of our lives, aren't we?
11:57Yeah.
11:57And we put it into sharp focus yesterday.
11:59Yeah.
12:00Definitely.
12:01Sam, do you want to see this colour go on?
12:04Yeah.
12:04Yeah, come on, yeah.
12:05This is another historic moment, this.
12:08Oh, it's nice.
12:09Yes.
12:09No, it's actually nice.
12:12That is fantastic, that.
12:14Keep going.
12:14It's nice, isn't it?
12:18We've done quite a lot of shabby-chicking, because we used to have a shop together.
12:22So, we sold shabby-chic furniture and then we'd, like, restore antique pieces.
12:28So, I'm quite happy painting furniture.
12:32It's very relaxing.
12:35Yeah, that's the first one that's on and I'm really happy about that.
12:41Each week, a familiar face from Chateau DIY will help judge the challenges.
12:46And this week, it's celebration and renovation queen, Stephanie Jarvis.
12:50Everyone sit wherever you like.
12:52Having recently hosted her own incredible engagement party at Chateau de la Lande,
12:58Stephanie has bags of experience transforming rooms into spectacular entertainment spaces.
13:03This is my dream, having all of my loved ones around a table.
13:06It's beautiful.
13:07I couldn't have asked for more.
13:10Thank you so much for joining me, Stephanie.
13:13This week, they've been challenged to convert these downstairs spaces into entertainment areas,
13:18with an emphasis on creating a really beautiful bespoke bar.
13:22So, you're no stranger to a good entertainment area.
13:26What will you be looking for?
13:26I think the whole point of being in a beautiful Chateau is that you want to have people around.
13:31Otherwise, why be in a big house?
13:33I think an entertainment area is one that makes people feel at ease and comfortable.
13:38It's really the key thing.
13:39And if you don't think enough about comfort, you could end up with a space that you can only stand,
13:43which is just very awkward, especially when you're wearing heels.
13:46Now, I'm a huge fan of upcycling. What are your views on reclaiming and reusing materials?
13:50I think it's critical, not only for the environment, but for most people coming to live in a Chateau, a
13:57big house in France.
13:58They can't just go in buying all new furniture or antiques.
14:03They're going to have to be going to the local broadcasts, to the local fairs, to the charity shops, which
14:08are so amazing in France, and you can get incredible bargains.
14:12It's really the only way to get started.
14:14Are you excited?
14:15I'm so excited because I love a good entertainment space, so I can't wait to see what they're going to
14:19do with them.
14:21Nell and Edward are over at the workshop with a creative thought to repurpose wallpaper.
14:26We are using the amazing rolls of wallpaper we got, but instead of wallpapering, we're going to put them into
14:33a frame, just to give the aesthetic of wallpaper without actually having to do wallpapering.
14:44Now, this is something I like to see sawdust being made.
14:48Yes.
14:48You look like you're in your element.
14:50I am, actually.
14:51Having fun?
14:51I am, actually. I'm having a lot of fun.
14:54I have sanded before, obviously, but not anything this old and decrepit.
15:00Substantial.
15:00Decrepid.
15:01I think it's beautiful.
15:02Where did you find them?
15:02It's going to be beautiful.
15:04We found them, actually, in a shed.
15:06Stumbled across them in a little shed that is part of the chateau around the corner.
15:10Amazing what you find in these old places, isn't it?
15:12Look around.
15:12It saves you money.
15:13And that's the most important thing.
15:15Wait till you hear the price of our bar.
15:17Go on.
15:18Less than 20 euros.
15:20That's a cheap bar.
15:20For the entire bar.
15:22Oof.
15:22But isn't it great?
15:23You've saved money.
15:24You've been really sensitive to the original building.
15:27And it's good for the planet.
15:28Exactly.
15:28Right, I want to see this part.
15:29Don't forget that.
15:34Oh, hello, everybody.
15:36Hi, Max.
15:36A lot of progress, I see.
15:38Progress everywhere, in fact.
15:40Yep.
15:41And lots of happy faces.
15:43Pleased with how it's going?
15:44Very.
15:44Yeah.
15:44It's coming together.
15:45It's going, yes.
15:46Slowly, slowly, as per we planned.
15:48Are we on schedule?
15:49Are we on track?
15:50Yeah.
15:50I think we are now.
15:52Yeah.
15:53So this is the pallet wood bar?
15:54Yes.
15:55That's taken a lot of time, isn't it?
15:57It has, yeah.
15:58Labour of love.
15:59But that's the most important part of this challenge, I guess.
16:02Yes.
16:02So you've allocated deliberately a lot of time to that reclaimed bar?
16:06Yes.
16:06Very much so.
16:07Okay, nice.
16:07And we're going for quite a neutral palette so far.
16:10Yeah, it's a garden room, so we want it to feel nature-inspired.
16:14We don't want it to be too colourful.
16:16Okay.
16:16So I get the theme is nature, but it's currently very beige.
16:21Is there any more colour to come?
16:23Yes, there will be.
16:24In fact, one of the pieces that we have done is right here.
16:28You might like it.
16:30Oh.
16:31That's beautiful.
16:33How have you done that?
16:34So this one was done with the decoupage.
16:37I used a napkin.
16:38Is this the bit you've been looking forward to?
16:40Yes, yes.
16:40I can tell.
16:41I guess the other team are very pleased to have you on this side.
16:44Very, very pleased.
16:44He's on our team and not the other one.
16:46Yes.
16:47In which case, I can probably leave you alone in safety.
16:50You look back on.
16:52Hear that.
16:54Honestly, it was a pleasant surprise because his reaction was,
16:57wow, a lot has changed.
16:59And I think we're very happy about that.
17:01That's very encouraging.
17:01Initially, I was quite concerned that this team had created
17:04a very bland room.
17:05It's very beige and natural.
17:07But Sarab has created an absolute masterclass
17:10in decoupaging that palette,
17:11and it's really injected his style and some colour and vibrancy.
17:15We've noted that comment he made about colour
17:18and, you know, Sarab's little decoupage.
17:20Yeah.
17:20So I think we're just going to try and keep Sarab doing more of that.
17:24Yeah, yeah.
17:24We're so lucky we've got him.
17:26Yeah.
17:27The bar looks good so far,
17:29but those slabs of timber are very heavy.
17:32I just hope they've thought about the structural integrity.
17:35Yes.
17:38Yes.
17:40Come on.
17:41Is it in now?
17:42No.
17:43Put it in, please.
17:43Give me a driver. Someone give me a driver.
17:45Just go.
17:51Yay!
17:53I'm going to cry again.
17:54I'm going to cry again.
17:57I'm going to cry again.
17:59Oh, stop. Stop.
18:01The floor's wet.
18:02Can you come round?
18:05Sorry.
18:11Well, this looks like there's a lot of stuff going on.
18:15A bit of a colour overload as well.
18:17Yeah.
18:17The bar's had its first coat of burgundy and the top.
18:21Sam's started the tiling.
18:22Who was in charge of the colour scheme?
18:24I think I'll throw my hand up for that one.
18:28The burgundy.
18:29It's a look I've noticed in the local area.
18:31It seems to be on a lot of the street furniture and street lights.
18:34And it goes with the architecture of the furniture, actually, doesn't it?
18:37Yeah.
18:37It really brings out those details.
18:38Mm.
18:39Are you going to highlight those details even more or just stick to one palette?
18:42The thought is just to sort of shabby chic them,
18:44so we'll be knocking the edges off with a bit of sandpaper.
18:47I like that.
18:47Just knocking the edges off with a bit of sandpaper.
18:50What other bargains have you got?
18:52So we've framed up some of the amazing wallpaper that we were given.
18:57We've got five of these to go around the room to add the aspect of wallpaper,
19:01but no one had to do any wallpapering, which is quite nice.
19:04I like that.
19:05It's a very clever way of adding that detail, adding that pattern
19:08without spending hours wallpapering a wall that's probably wonky.
19:11So, actually, this wallpaper was free, so a bit of upcycling,
19:14but more sustainable, which I know that you love,
19:16and we're hoping that the pattern is exactly what Stephanie's going to love,
19:20so a bit of both of you in this one.
19:22Oh, I like that. Keeping the judges happy.
19:24It's the plan. Good tactics.
19:26So it sounds like you've got a lot going on.
19:29You've got some cracking pieces of furniture.
19:30Does that mean you've spent all your money?
19:32Four euros left?
19:33Yeah.
19:34We're going to get some cheese.
19:35I mean, barely.
19:37Yeah.
19:37Perhaps half a bottle of wine.
19:39Yeah.
19:39Oh, no, we've already bought the wine.
19:40We've got the wine, don't you worry.
19:42That's where the first hundred euros went.
19:43Yeah.
19:44So the budget is spent.
19:46Yeah.
19:46The budget is spent.
19:47So there's no contingency.
19:49If something goes wrong now, you've got to make it good.
19:51Nothing will go wrong.
19:53I'm going to leave you to it.
19:54You've got plenty to be getting on with.
19:55Thanks, Max.
19:56I can't wait to see it all back in the room.
19:58Cheers.
19:58See you later.
20:00So that was a relief, wasn't it?
20:02Yeah.
20:02To get Max's feedback.
20:03Yeah, I think he seemed really positive.
20:06He seemed to really like the wallpaper, though, so that's really good.
20:09It was really interesting how much it cost as well, wasn't it?
20:11Yeah.
20:11A bit of sustainability, very Max.
20:13I love the fact that this team have used a bold colour, but that burgundy's very dark.
20:18It might make that small space feel really dingy.
20:21I just hope the green lifts it a bit.
20:24As Fernando panels the ceiling next door, Elizabeth and Sam have concluded they don't like the
20:30sheet covering on theirs.
20:32Been giving it a good think.
20:34Yeah.
20:34And there is an element in our room which we're not happy about.
20:39And...
20:39We have to voice up that we're not happy.
20:40We have to voice up.
20:41We prefer the exposed beams over the stapled dust sheets.
20:47And we want to see what they're going to do about it.
20:51Yeah, that's what I mean.
20:52Obviously, that's where our disagreement is because, for us, they're not aesthetic rustic beams.
20:59They're floor joists from the ceiling above.
21:01And I know you started painting them.
21:03Yeah.
21:04And then decided not to carry on.
21:06So, that's fine if you want to take the dust sheets down.
21:11But we would like a solution for how that looks because we're not happy for it to be just left
21:15unfinished.
21:16We think we should just leave it.
21:18Yeah, well...
21:19That's how we feel.
21:20That's where we're not in agreement because we just think that just looks like a garage ceiling.
21:25All that was said was, we don't like it.
21:27Yeah.
21:27Or Elizabeth didn't like it.
21:28And that was it.
21:29There wasn't...
21:30You know, we are a team.
21:32You know, there didn't seem to be a way of kind of coming together and finding a solution.
21:37It just looks like a patchwork quilt of dust sheets.
21:41And it doesn't suit the room.
21:44We'll work hard to just tidy up the edges then.
21:48I know I can sew something that's going to cover this end so it looks, like, even.
21:53Yeah.
21:54Yeah.
21:55You know, if time and money was no object, you'd plasterboard it or, you know, you'd come up with a
22:03different solution, you know.
22:04So, I'm glad we stuck to our guns.
22:08Are you all right?
22:09No, I just feel really disappointed because I'd hate the ceiling.
22:13It's a massive shame, isn't it?
22:15Yeah.
22:15I think we fought our car on the best we can.
22:17Yeah.
22:18There's no doubt about our opinion on it.
22:20Well, they've got a strong opinion as well.
22:22They want to keep it.
22:23Yeah, yeah.
22:23And I just think also, Nell is now going to start sewing.
22:27And I'm just worried about the time.
22:29I know.
22:30What if she's only partly done it and we're going to finish?
22:32We did our best.
22:34I really like the room.
22:36It's got great elements but just the ceiling lets it down.
22:40I actually think now we'll lose the challenge.
22:50Found a piece of wire on the wall.
22:52It's the final day of this six day renovation challenge and both teams only have two hours
22:57left until judging.
22:58First bucket of sand being laid for the bull pits.
23:11Nell still has to sew all the borders for the controversial ceiling cover in the Yellow and Navy team's room.
23:17I haven't ever done anything this big before.
23:19I used to make, like, alterations on clothes.
23:23I didn't actually think we'd have these, like, last minute dresses.
23:27I thought this morning I was just going to finish shabby-ing the bar and then literally put everything in
23:32the room.
23:32I didn't think we'd end up with a massive extra sewing challenge.
23:38I mean, we might not even finish it properly now.
23:43This is going to turn into boxing for under the sink.
23:47So the guests at the back of the room, even though they can see behind the bar,
23:51they can't see all the mucky pipework that's under the sink.
23:56I'll probably need this when I get this.
24:04That's it.
24:08Put your hand.
24:09That's it.
24:10Me in.
24:11We're in.
24:12Are we in at the bottom?
24:13Yeah, I think so, yeah.
24:14Right, can you push it to me?
24:16Right, I'm buttoning up now.
24:18That's it.
24:19Oh, you're on.
24:20He's right in. He's on.
24:21This is your one hour warning.
24:25You have one hour left.
24:28He's having a panic attack at all.
24:30My hand is shaking because I'm really nervous.
24:33Put a lot riding on this panel and I'd just be really upset to go home now.
24:39An hour to go has certainly got me nervous.
24:50It's going to go. It's going to go.
24:59Big panel is done.
25:01We just need to cut these pieces here.
25:07I'm not enjoying the neon-ness of these lights.
25:13One, two, three.
25:14One, two, three.
25:18Fantastic.
25:27Down.
25:28Down.
25:29What, a baton across here?
25:30Yeah, there.
25:31Yeah, just...
25:32You just get a bit off these florally.
25:33It's all the sharp edges.
25:47What do we think?
25:48Oh, that looks amazing.
25:50Obviously not finished.
25:51It's so pretty.
25:52I'm going to go put them all together.
26:06Time's up!
26:08Time's up.
26:10Tools down.
26:11Oh, man.
26:12We'll be judging shortly.
26:13Well done, guys.
26:14We're done, we're done.
26:15Yes!
26:16Woo!
26:17Well done.
26:18What do you think, guys?
26:19I think he looks great.
26:20Well done, everyone.
26:21Well done.
26:22Well done.
26:22Well done.
26:23Well done.
26:27At the beginning of the week, both teams were given empty garages to transform into entertainment
26:32spaces.
26:33With just 1,000 euros and six days to renovate, have they managed to achieve it?
26:41Right, it's time to check out these spaces.
26:43Let's judge the first one.
26:45I'm so nervous and excited for them.
26:47All right, let's do it.
26:54Ooh.
26:55First up, it's the navy and yellow team.
26:58Nell, Ed, Sam and Elizabeth went for a chateau shabby chic look.
27:03They spent 996 euros of their 1,000 euro budget.
27:08Their big purchases included 80 euros on the Welsh dresser, 200 euros on the sofa and armchair
27:13set, plus an astonishing 250 euros on paint.
27:19With the rest of the budget spent on all the fixtures, fittings and decorative pieces.
27:23They've panelled walls, built a modular bar and framed wallpaper accents throughout.
27:29I like it.
27:31It's got a very nice vibe and atmosphere, hasn't it?
27:33The panelling makes it feel as though it's always been here.
27:36The use of the old French dresser.
27:39I did have my concerns about the burgundy.
27:43Outside when I saw it, it was very dark.
27:45It's strong.
27:46But I think it works.
27:47When I saw this the first time around in the Petite Challenge, I was not a huge fan.
27:53But now it's been painted and it's on the wall.
27:56What do you think?
27:56I think it disappears pretty well.
27:59That's not praise.
28:00No, it kind of is because you want to look at the wine.
28:03When you look at the top detail, do you see castle turrets or teeth?
28:08That's a beautiful dental moulding, isn't it?
28:10That's what you meant.
28:12Another thing I know you love is adequate seating.
28:16And there is.
28:17I think it's really successful in this room because not only are there lots of seats,
28:21but they're not just in a big circle around the room.
28:24Everyone's staring at each other.
28:25Everyone is near a table.
28:27You can sit in different groups.
28:28You can then move around, chat to different people.
28:31I think it's perfect.
28:32And you look for that in an entertainment space.
28:34So this is a multifunctional bar.
28:37It's kind of like an honesty bar in this mode.
28:39It was actually one big dresser that Edward and Nell cut in half.
28:42You can't tell when you walk in.
28:44You still think it's one big piece of furniture.
28:47The way that Edward mounted this on the wall, he used a French cleat.
28:50So a really lovely piece of joinery.
28:52So there's no fixings on display.
28:54It's all completely hidden.
28:55It feels original.
28:57When you look at that, you don't think someone's tampered with it.
28:59And that's very impressive.
29:01It's ticking my upcycling box, but also my modularity box.
29:05Check this out.
29:08It goes from standard honesty bar.
29:11It comes out to provide you a really good bar when you're entertaining and paying guests
29:16are parting with their hard-earned cash.
29:18This is genius.
29:19Honestly, I'm blown away by this.
29:22And this is Sam's tiling.
29:24The way he's worked the tiles really beautifully around the uprights is quite an accomplishment, actually.
29:29I'm asking you to look upwards now to that ceiling.
29:32It's got a bit of a padded cell vibe.
29:35Above that, there's actually some fairly nice beams that would have looked great just left exposed.
29:40So Edward and Nell were absolutely convinced they had to cover the beams with this fabric.
29:45But Sam and Elizabeth were really against it, and there was quite a lot of friction, actually.
29:51I wish they'd listened to Elizabeth and Sam, because I think they've expended a lot of energy there.
29:56And it's easy to do when you're restoring a big house.
29:59You can get distracted by unimportant things.
30:02And I think this is a perfect example of that.
30:05Overall?
30:06Overall, I think it's extremely successful.
30:09I like the 12-ish wee wallpaper that they've found.
30:12And it's quite fitting, I think, for this period of building.
30:17So this panelling, conceptually, the idea of it mirroring the door when it opens is wonderful.
30:23It's Sam's first attempt using a router.
30:25And there are a few little wiggly bits here and there.
30:29I think a very decent first attempt.
30:31Panelling successfully works as an extension of the doors.
30:34Once you open the doors, let me show you how that looks.
30:45OK.
30:46Oh, that's delightful.
30:48That's a transformation, isn't it?
30:50It feels so warm and snug now.
30:53And that all leads to an outdoor Patonk games area.
30:58I think a lot of people, given this challenge, would have just ignored those doors.
31:02But actually to consider how they're constructed, the design, the style, replicating and mirroring it over that side.
31:09That's a stroke of genius.
31:10And that's a skill that you're going to need constantly if you're restoring a historic house in France.
31:16Because there'll always be things that you cannot remove and you have to find ways to work around them.
31:20And if you work with them, you often end up with a better design.
31:23But now on to the next room.
31:25Can it be as much fun?
31:36Wow.
31:37It's totally different.
31:41Next is the Burgundy and Mint team, consisting of Fernando and Saurab with Xavier and Tache.
31:50They have gone for a French rustic look and spent 917 of their 1,000 euro budget.
31:56Spending 100 euros on the wine barrel and wooden stools, 30 euros on the coffee sacks, 20 euros on the
32:03pallets which they've made their bar with.
32:06The top of the bar is repurposed wooden beams, whilst the room is also furnished with hand-painted and hand
32:12-crafted pieces.
32:15There's a lot of space.
32:17It feels like the sort of bar where you're going to have 50 people in here jostling to get to
32:22the bar, chatting.
32:28I'd much rather have a party in here and a drink next door.
32:32Snug drinks and then dancing here.
32:35Saurab and Fernando were really keen to utilise pallets for the base of the bar.
32:40And Xavier's done a fantastic job of fitting these lovely bits of timber that he found actually within the grounds.
32:45But that's clever.
32:46Yeah, so it's a real joint effort.
32:48My eye is drawn by all the little things that they've put onto it. I mean the scissors.
32:53Now that is a successful piece of decoupage.
32:56Isn't that delightful?
32:58So this is Saurab's go-to technique because he's also done it on the pallet up there.
33:02It's so subtle, but it transforms it. It's really nice.
33:08Now a challenge for this team is they had the sink just plonked in the middle of the space.
33:12But it seems like they've utilised it really well. In terms of a practical bar, being able to wash up
33:18glasses and pour a glass of water is fantastic.
33:20They've absolutely used it to their advantage.
33:23What could have been a hindrance if they've made a feature. Clever.
33:26Now it would appear they've tried to make a feature wall out of a piece of hessian.
33:33Medellin Supremo? I don't think that's French.
33:35I like the glasses that they've chosen very much. Not convinced about the shelf.
33:41The finish leaves a bit to be desired. I'm all for rustic, but sometimes the word rustic is used instead
33:47of rushed.
33:49Now this is a cute little area. A little bar stall area. You can perch and pop a drink on
33:55the shelf, reclaimed shelf.
33:56How does it feel? Ergonomic?
33:59Slightly high if I'm honest. Yeah, those proportions don't really work.
34:03I do love this artwork though. That was Tasha.
34:05Oh, at least the mystery of the hessian sack's been solved. Columbia.
34:11Nothing says rural France like a Colombian coffee sack.
34:15What I love is the lampshade.
34:18That's one of Saurab's creations again. That's that decoupage technique that he loves.
34:23It's clever. It's delicate. It gives a very warming glow.
34:27Nice little games area here.
34:29How's your... What is this? Jeux de dame in French?
34:33I'm very accomplished at Jeux de dame. Beautiful piece of furniture.
34:37I like the way that they've taken a pretty table from the local charity shop that might have been hard
34:43to use in a bar and they've turned it into a tiny games table for two.
34:47Nice little intimate space, isn't it? A little breakaway zone.
34:50And I think that that's what this area of the room is lacking. It's very open and little zones like
34:56this are what I love.
34:57Places where people can hide away and just have a chat.
35:00I've just spotted there's another lovely little seating area over there.
35:06Oh, now this is snug.
35:08It's nice to see a lounge area actually, isn't it?
35:11It is because you start to think about using the room throughout the day.
35:14Just coming for maybe a little glass of wine with a good book lying on here.
35:19What do you think of the rusty metal?
35:21If it were me I would have painted this. I definitely think if people are going to be sitting as
35:25well in completely white dresses.
35:27Yeah, there's going to be a little bit of rust everywhere later.
35:30And a huge big mirror.
35:32I like seeing a nice big mirror from the local charity shops.
35:36They're one of the things that you can get quite cheaply in France.
35:39They're beautiful, they bounce light around which is great in a room like this where you have the light coming
35:44in from the other end of the room.
35:46Now, that leads nicely to the ceiling.
35:48Again, they've spent a lot of time concentrating on the ceiling.
35:52I like this much more, but I do think that all of that time could have been better spent improving
36:00some of the finishes in the room.
36:03So this I find was a really successful design for the Petite Challenge.
36:08It's a wine rack, it holds 12 bottles and I think it's quite beautiful.
36:12What I haven't seen before is a little slot for a glass.
36:15Nice touch, huh?
36:16It is.
36:17Beautiful design, reclaimed timber, Fernando worked his magic on this.
36:21Very nicely done.
36:23We have got a lot to discuss.
36:29You just don't know how the judges are going to see it, do you?
36:32Both Max and Stephanie are so different.
36:35Hopefully we've integrated a bit of them both, yeah.
36:38A little bit scared of the judges.
36:42I'm not scared.
36:43I think the world like elements are battering up a lot.
36:46Like the wallpaper and maybe the panelling and the bar.
36:49Of course we're feeling a bit nervous, it's natural.
36:52But at the same time, we are hoping we can please them.
37:02Welcome back to Chateau DIY Win The Dream.
37:05It's decision time at the Chateau.
37:07Both entertainment rooms have been revealed and now it's time to decide who will be going home.
37:12So Stephanie, honest opinions on the first space.
37:15I found it warm and inviting.
37:18I wanted to sit there and that's what you want from an entertaining space.
37:22I liked the innovative upcycling.
37:25I thought it was so clever the way they made the bar.
37:28And then there were other areas like the patterns on the chairs, which I don't love.
37:33I find very French twee.
37:36But I loved the way that the seating was divided throughout the room.
37:41You could sit and have a private conversation with just one other friend.
37:45Or you could open up the dining table, bring all the chairs around and have a big meal for lots
37:49and lots of people.
37:50It was a very versatile space, wasn't it?
37:53And potentially money making.
37:55Because ultimately, once you've got that bar out, you could have hosted up to 10 or 12 people.
38:00And that's an important part of owning a Chateau, that you can make money to pay the bills.
38:04You have to find ways of not only paying the monthly bills, but of doing the constant restorations that are
38:10needed bit by bit.
38:12And whenever you least expect it, there's going to be another catastrophe and you'll need to pay for more restoration.
38:17And the panelling for me was conceptually brilliant.
38:19The way it flowed through to the door, but then mirrored the door when it was open.
38:23Biggest disappointment for room one was that ceiling.
38:26I don't know why they went to all that effort to make it look more ugly.
38:30I don't think anyone could walk in and love that ceiling.
38:34Time to talk to me.
38:35I think because the bar was so big and there was no seating in front of it,
38:40it felt like an entertainment space more for standing than for sitting.
38:44So maybe for greater numbers of people, all standing at the bar, jostling to get to the front.
38:49Personally, I quite like sitting.
38:50What I did love about their bar is they created it from scratch out of reclaimed materials
38:55and only really items found on the grounds of the building.
38:59It was really impressive.
39:01Colombian coffee sacks though.
39:02I like a bit of rusticity, but I felt that they were taking things a little too far.
39:07Especially I think they'd even been like cut in half and they had different halves in different bits.
39:11Yeah, it felt a bit sketch.
39:12I thought Saurabh's touches in room two were delightful. The decoupage.
39:17We're not fans of the ceiling in space one. I think the other ceiling in space two was fantastic.
39:23Oh, it was night and day. They did a beautiful job of it. I wouldn't have noticed it. It blended
39:28really well into the space.
39:30That ceiling was a real team effort. Tasha even went out and sourced sand from the grounds and mixed it
39:35up with the paint to create that really gorgeous textured finish.
39:39That is so impressive.
39:41This is really, really tough, but I think we do agree.
39:46Yes, I think we know who we'll be sending home.
39:50Let's go gather the pairs.
40:11Welcome everybody. What a fantastic first challenge. You should all be incredibly proud.
40:19You made judging so, so tough.
40:23But Stephanie and I have made a decision.
40:30We had to split hairs to choose our winning room.
40:34And the winning room is...
40:46Nell, Edward, Sam and Elizabeth.
40:51Wow.
40:57I actually feel a little bit sick at the minute.
41:00I think I've convinced myself that we weren't going to go through.
41:03Well done. Well done. Congratulations.
41:06I think my legs were going a little bit.
41:09I genuinely, after the argument with the ceiling, thought we were... it was it. We were done.
41:14I genuinely quite shocked.
41:15Yeah, really happy.
41:17It's amazing.
41:18What I loved in the winning room was the atmosphere and the versatility of the space.
41:23And the fact that I actually just wanted to sit there and have a drink.
41:26And you can't ask for more than that from an entertaining space.
41:29So, Xavier, Tasha, Fernando and Saurab, would you like to take a step forward, please?
41:41As a losing team, it's now between the Burgundy and mint pairs to see who's leaving the competition and who
41:48will continue to the next challenge.
41:51It was a huge task to create a bar from scratch.
41:55I was super impressed with the construction, the sorting of materials from around the property.
42:02However, on closer inspection, some of the detail wasn't quite there.
42:06It was a little bit rough around the edges.
42:09I must say, Tasha, we loved your signs. They really captured the French aesthetic. That calligraphy felt so in keeping.
42:17And we also loved what you did with the lighting and with the plants being brought into the back of
42:22the room.
42:24Fernando, I love your passion for upcycling and sourcing those pallets. It was a stroke of genius.
42:31And, Saab, I loved your decoupage. I wasn't always sure that it worked with the sort of rustic aesthetic of
42:37the rest of the room, but it's beautiful.
42:42It was an incredibly tough decision, but unfortunately, we do have to send one pair home.
42:49The pair leaving us today is...
42:55Fernando and Saurab.
43:00Sorry, Jake.
43:03Sorry.
43:04Sorry.
43:09Sorry, Saurabh.
43:12Oh, I'm sorry.
43:13I'm sorry.
43:14I'm sorry.
43:16Good luck, guys.
43:20So, yeah, we're feeling a bit sad and gutted, but it is what it is. It's a competition at the
43:28end of the day.
43:31For me, Fernando and Saurabh were fantastic at the artistic creativity, but just lacked a little bit of the construction
43:37techniques.
43:38I just couldn't see that there in their designs.
43:42It's all right.
43:43Are you okay?
43:44Yeah.
43:45Don't worry.
43:48Oh, God.
43:51Not a dry eye in the house, is there?
43:54That was so tough.
43:56That was absolutely horrible.
43:57Didn't think it'd be like this.
43:59I think Xavier was really brave taking on that bar.
44:02He constructed it from scratch and he did a fantastic job.
44:06So, for that reason, I think he deserves to stay in the competition.
44:09And you could see Xavier and Tasha's touches throughout the room, not with just one style of decoration.
44:16To be honest, when they said that our room was the losing room, I just thought we were going home.
44:20So, I am very grateful that we are through, but at the same time, it's bittersweet.
44:29I really didn't expect that at all.
44:31I don't think we realised how much we want it until now.
44:36Yeah.
44:41Can we have a drink now?
44:44Well done, everyone.
44:45We'll see you at the next challenge.
44:55Next time...
45:00The pairs tackle bedrooms.
45:02I've never danced with a headboard before.
45:04Oh, dear.
45:05And a perplexing petite challenge.
45:09I'm having an absolute nightmare.
45:11Whose design will dazzle...
45:14This is a big moment, though.
45:15You will be going home if there's no bed in this room.
45:18And who will fall flat?
45:20This could be amazing or absolutely awful.
45:25I'm a little bit scared now.
45:28May I see you.
45:30I see you, too.
45:31You are sick.
