00:01Welcome to Chateau DIY Win The Dream.
00:04The ultimate renovation showdown.
00:06Whose idea was this?
00:08Come on, mine.
00:09Take him here, Marie.
00:11Over four thrilling weeks, creativity meets competition.
00:14Looks wicked, doesn't it?
00:15Perfect fit, oh my gosh.
00:18As determined duos battle it out to prove.
00:21I'm having an absolute nightmare.
00:23They've got the vision, skill and grit to win the ultimate prize.
00:26I haven't got a clue.
00:27I can cry, I can literally cry.
00:30The keys to this breathtaking French property.
00:34Set on the outskirts of a Normandy nature park,
00:37the property boasts six bedrooms, four bathrooms,
00:42two salons, five additional rooms to renovate,
00:46perfectly pruned gardens, stunning outbuildings,
00:49its very own orchard and even a historic bread oven.
00:53It's a lot to play for and if we lose, I'll be fuming.
00:57Three heats and a grand finale where only the best will rise.
01:02All the pairs have to do is show they have the renovation know-how
01:06to impress me and various guest judges from Chateau DIY.
01:10I think this is really creative.
01:13What a transformation.
01:14In weekly challenges designed to push their creativity and skills to the limit.
01:19The clock is ticking.
01:20Win the week and they secure their spot in the grand finale.
01:24The dream is real, the stakes are high.
01:26This is Chateau DIY Win The Dream.
01:39Welcome to Heat One.
01:41Let's meet this week's pairs competing for place in the grand finale.
01:44Oh my God.
01:46It's so beautiful.
01:48Isn't it amazing?
01:50It's beyond our wildest dreams really because you just never think an opportunity like this is going to present itself.
01:55Wow.
01:55Look at that balcony.
01:57It's been such a build-up to get here and now we see it and there's all these ideas flying
02:02around.
02:03Wow.
02:05Look at this one, how nice.
02:07We are feeling a bit excited, a bit of nervous, mixed bag of both.
02:13Look so beautiful.
02:15The property is amazing.
02:18It's really lovely.
02:20This is how we imagined our dream home going to be.
02:23Oh, wow.
02:25Look at the little Juliet balcony.
02:28We are very excited.
02:29But also I think a bit of apprehension is always good.
02:32You know, focuses the mind, sharpens the chisel.
02:35Yeah.
02:37Isn't it gorgeous?
02:38Wow.
02:39Look at the sugars.
02:40Wow, yeah.
02:41Absolutely stunning.
02:42We are like quietly competitive, aren't we?
02:46Yeah.
02:46Yeah.
02:46I don't like to lose.
02:48So to have this opportunity in front of us is incredible.
02:55Hello and welcome to Win The Dream, where you'll be competing to win this beautiful property behind me.
03:02You'll look very excited, which I'm pleased to see.
03:05But unfortunately, it's not going to be that easy.
03:07You've got to prove to me and the various judges that you've got the ability and the skill to manage
03:12and maintain a period property like this.
03:15You now look slightly petrified.
03:18It's going to be great fun.
03:19For your first challenge, I'd like you to create a room that's a social hub for the property, where guests
03:26can gather and in addition create an event space where you can earn money.
03:31Oh, okay.
03:32No.
03:32Your entertainment space must include a custom-built bar.
03:37Oh, that's good.
03:38Nice.
03:38Yeah.
03:39Overall, I'm looking for concept and creativity, techniques and functionality, and I really want you to play to your strengths.
03:47If you've got a skill set, I want to see it in your designs.
03:50Yeah.
03:51Now, to make things slightly more interesting, I'm going to put you into two teams of four.
03:57Ooh.
03:57Ooh, indeed.
03:59Ooh.
03:59So Sam and Elizabeth, I'm going to put you with Edward and Nell.
04:02Ooh, good.
04:04And Sarab and Fernando, you'll be with Xavier and Tasha.
04:08Happy with that?
04:08Yes.
04:09Yes.
04:09Now, are you ready for your first challenge?
04:11Yes.
04:12You sure?
04:12Yes.
04:13So, for this challenge, we're giving each team a thousand euros to complete their renovation.
04:19Your briefs and tools are waiting in your rooms.
04:22Your time starts now.
04:24Chateaus can be costly to run, which is why many are businesses to bring in an income.
04:30Ooh.
04:30Wow.
04:31This is nice, isn't it?
04:32Oh, it's quite big.
04:33It is quite big.
04:35So our pairs have been put into teams to renovate these disused garages,
04:38and have been given just six days to do so.
04:42Oh, okay.
04:43This is cool.
04:44This is good.
04:46In Burgundy, a young parent, Zav, an advertising manager, and Tash, who works in e-commerce.
04:52So we have a little girl, she's two and a half, and a little seven-month-old baby boy.
04:56So, obviously, it's not easy to leave them, and it was really hard for us to kind of make
05:00the decision to just come and do this, but it's for them as well.
05:03It's for all of us.
05:05Teamed up with them in Mint are husbands, Fernando, who works as cabin crew, and Saurab,
05:10a software engineer, who dream of living in France.
05:13The experience of moving here in France, I think, is something we've been basically
05:18dreaming of for a long time, and maybe it's the time now that it will come through.
05:24The couple met 13 years ago, and now run a successful upcycling business.
05:31But their dream would be to open a workshop warehouse while renovating the chateau.
05:36That eventually is our dream, that we're going to do a holiday retreat, so people can come
05:40and see that the house was done with the DIY skills at D1.5.
05:45Yeah.
05:45And they can actually learn the skills, they can learn how to do furniture upcycling.
05:50So once we move into the property, that's what we have plans for the future.
05:54I just think it's nice to have the zones.
05:57Yes.
05:58Tash is kicking things off with ideas about the room's layout.
06:02I think we have this really nice wall at the back, so we obviously want to make a bit
06:04of a feature of that.
06:05It seems to me like this is like more of a natural seating area.
06:09Coffee table over there.
06:11Yeah, it could be a coffee table and like a settee or...
06:14A nice little nook to like read and chill in.
06:19That corner we could do a little bit of gaming area.
06:21I think having some games is a really good idea.
06:24Maybe we can reuse this for the bar area.
06:26Should we check if it works?
06:27Let's have a go.
06:28Yeah.
06:29It does.
06:31Cupboards underneath it.
06:32A new splash back.
06:33Yeah.
06:34We just need to think about how we're going to build the bar.
06:36We can find an old pallet.
06:38Yeah.
06:39Break them in.
06:40Make a bar out of it.
06:41That's a really good idea.
06:42Then we would need to build the bar out to allow room.
06:45And then you can come round here.
06:47You're at the bar.
06:49Serving the drinks is your...
06:50Yeah.
06:51Right guys.
06:51It seems like we have a plan.
06:53Should we just crack on?
06:54Yes.
06:54Let's go.
07:05Let's go.
07:23Let's go.
07:25We need it.
07:25It's just a look.
07:26Yeah.
07:26Or a noise.
07:27A little whistle you do sometimes.
07:29Yeah, yeah.
07:29And we understand each other.
07:30Yeah.
07:31Nice bit of metal here.
07:33I don't know if...
07:33Yeah.
07:33With Ed a chef and Nell a waitress.
07:37And the doors open out.
07:39We should definitely make a feature of that.
07:40This Navy duo from Surrey have been married for four years.
07:43Oh, is it like a bag each?
07:45Let's have a look.
07:46We want to live a bit of a more simple life, work on the land, eat the food that we
07:53make,
07:53and raise our daughter in a kind of more chilled environment in some sunshine.
07:59I think it would change our lives.
08:00The pair first met while working in the hospitality industry.
08:04A couple of tape measures and some chisels I've got in here.
08:06And are hoping the skills learned from their day job will pay off for this challenge.
08:10I'm feeling quite happy about the challenge.
08:12I had a tendency on a pub a few years ago.
08:16So I've renovated a bar.
08:18And I have worked behind a bar for a number of years.
08:20So I think I know what you need on one.
08:23Yeah.
08:23But what theme are we going to go for?
08:25Are we going to go kind of English pub vibes?
08:27Are we going to go kind of French?
08:29We're in a chateau in France.
08:31I think we need to go French.
08:32Yeah, absolutely.
08:33French rustic.
08:34Kind of French rustic, yeah.
08:36Rustic's quite nice, because that leans to the walls.
08:38Do you notice the Arnett panel in here?
08:40Yeah.
08:40Could we continue that along on this bare wall?
08:43Oh, that's cool, yeah.
08:43That is primed to be panelled.
08:45It is really nice.
08:46Would we do the three squares?
08:49Yes.
08:49So, shall I just draw this on the wall and do it?
08:52Yeah, go on.
08:53Oh, excitement.
08:56And then...
08:56Oh my God, I should have used the ruler.
09:00Elizabeth has an idea about how they can hit the brief
09:02by bringing in some money with their space.
09:05What do you think about, like, an honesty bar?
09:07I think that's a good sensible idea.
09:08I think that's a really good idea.
09:10If we have the both options, though.
09:12Yeah.
09:13How it is normally in the day is like an honesty bar
09:15that then moves into a room that you can have cheese and wine.
09:19You're doubling up then.
09:20Got the option then.
09:21Yeah, absolutely.
09:22Multi-purpose.
09:23Is there a way of being really clever with it?
09:25Do we...
09:25Could the bottom of the bar pull out and the top of the bar stay fixed to the wall?
09:31Yeah.
09:31And then you'd be able to get behind it.
09:33Yeah.
09:33You know, serving away and whatnot.
09:35If we can work something out like that.
09:36Yeah.
09:37So, like, what are they called?
09:38The cupboard at the bottom and you put your grandma's plates on.
09:42Welsh dressers.
09:42Welsh dressers.
09:43So you can have the bar on this side here where you've already got a bit of an alcove,
09:48a bit of a space, keeping the whole of that space there.
09:51So would you put the Welsh dresser right up against there?
09:54I think maybe it would start where the lighting is, pin the Welsh dresser to the wall
09:59and then the bottom of it's on wheels and comes out.
10:02And then when it's not in use, it just looks completely normal.
10:04I like that idea.
10:06I think really the next step is seeing what furniture we can find then.
10:09Because that starts it off, doesn't it, for us?
10:12Yeah.
10:12Cooked.
10:12Sounds really good.
10:13Let's do it.
10:14To the Bracant.
10:14To the Bracant.
10:19Beyond the formal gardens and next to the Chateau's orchard are two outbuildings that
10:23are included in the phenomenal prize.
10:25I have converted one of these outbuildings into a workshop for the contestants,
10:29stocked with all the tools and basic supplies they will need for the competition.
10:35Ed, on the Navy and Yellow team, is on the power tools.
10:44So we're just going to cover this door in because we're going to put the bar across here.
10:49So, just building this little frame out here.
10:52I'm going to cover it with OSB and then whatever I'm told to clad it in or paint it with
10:57will be how it's finished.
10:59The Burgundy and Mint team have both hit the road to go shopping.
11:05Fernando and Saurab are off to source some pallets for their bar.
11:10OK, let's go.
11:12While Xavier and Tash...
11:14...are looking to find some hidden gems at the local Bracant.
11:18Sam and Ed are making a start on the panelling.
11:22So far, it's all good.
11:24It's looking alright.
11:29Now this looks productive.
11:31We've finally got on the tools, have we?
11:33Yeah.
11:34Yeah, finally.
11:35Look forward to this bit.
11:36What are you making?
11:37Panelling to go on that wall.
11:39Nice.
11:40What's this material you're using?
11:41Solid pine?
11:42Yeah.
11:42We just think that gives the depth that we need and just a bit more eco-friendly.
11:47Yeah, it's a nice sustainable material as opposed to MDF, which is not great for the planet.
11:51It's very on trend at the moment panelling, isn't it?
11:54You're seeing a lot of interior design mags and stuff.
11:56Yeah.
11:56Do you think it's appropriate for a French chateau garage?
11:59I hope it is, to be honest.
12:01I think the fact that we're trying to echo what's there already is the rationale behind putting it there, you
12:05know.
12:06And we want the relaxed, entertaining, a room vibe as well. I think that'll bring it.
12:11Is this something you've done at home?
12:12I've done a very limited amount of panelling on the window seats.
12:16Very limited panelling.
12:17I'm just getting used to some of the equipment, to be honest.
12:20So this is going to test me a bit.
12:28We are back in North-West France, where two teams are battling it out to convert two garages of this
12:34huge chateau into entertaining spaces, which must be complete with a functioning custom-made bar.
12:42While the navy and yellow team have started on their wall panelling, the burgundy and mint team have headed out
12:49shopping.
12:50Yay!
12:50Result.
12:52Xavier and Tash have already purchased supplies.
12:55We are in the middle of our hall.
12:57At a recycling centre, apparently.
12:59At a recycling centre.
13:00We can sand these down, repaint them, and now we can go and see what else we can find.
13:04Yeah.
13:06But it's not going to plan for Fernando and Saurabh.
13:09No.
13:09It doesn't work.
13:11The guy said he was going to be here, but he's nowhere to be seen.
13:14What do we do?
13:15So, did you try to write him?
13:17I wrote.
13:18I said we are here.
13:19But no reply yet.
13:21They've sourced some pallets for the bar, but the cellar has gone missing.
13:26Well, keep an eye on your phone.
13:28Yeah, I'm keeping an eye on your phone.
13:29Is there a possibility to call him?
13:32No.
13:33Do you want to knock next door?
13:35Or maybe that house?
13:35Next door, this one.
13:36There's a bit of frustration because we said, can you come now?
13:39He said, c'est bon.
13:40We understood this.
13:42Yes, you can come.
13:43And now we are here.
13:45Looks like he's saying, only come at 3.30.
13:49We can't afford to waste time like this.
13:51So, I'm just going to message, see if we can take the pallets,
13:54and then we can come back and pay, or pay online.
13:57Oh, we just translate.
13:58It says, the boss is not in the side.
14:01Translate into French.
14:03Last message to him, and then we're going to have to move on.
14:05If the pair can't take the pallets,
14:07they'll have to have a total rethink on their bar design.
14:11We can't waste time.
14:12Wait, and then we'll see.
14:15Meanwhile, Nell and Elizabeth of the Navy and Yellow Team
14:18have arrived at the local Bricant.
14:20Let's see what we can find.
14:21Absolutely.
14:22I'm excited.
14:23Yeah, me too.
14:24I think it should be good, you know.
14:26Yeah, I'm excited.
14:28Yeah.
14:30What we so...
14:31Cheers.
14:33Top of their list is a Welsh dresser
14:35that they want to repurpose into a bar.
14:3840 euros.
14:39I don't love it.
14:40Ooh!
14:41Oh, my goodness.
14:42Look.
14:4320.
14:44But the room's not big enough, unfortunately.
14:47I know.
14:47How sad.
14:47Pull that on.
14:49I think...
14:50Do you know what?
14:51It really could work.
14:53If we stuck this like a cupboard to the wall,
14:56Sam tiled the top and the back,
14:58I think it's a strong contender.
15:01I think it's really nice.
15:02I think it is.
15:03Yeah.
15:03Okay.
15:04Should we go and start buying the glasses and games and things?
15:07Let's do it.
15:08Ah, perfect!
15:09You wanted bashed up?
15:10I do!
15:11I want a battered table.
15:13You should get that.
15:13I think take that.
15:14Yeah, get that.
15:15Texas Hold'em.
15:16I really like this.
15:18Can we just get this?
15:18Let's just get it.
15:19I like that.
15:21I've found a curtain pole for our stairs.
15:25They'd look really nice, Nell, on the bar.
15:27Loads of ice in them with bottles of beer.
15:29I think you're right.
15:30Elizabeth and Nell seem to have bagged quite a few bargains.
15:3525.
15:36Oh!
15:37Okay.
15:37Merci beaucoup.
15:38Merci beaucoup.
15:40Merci, monsieur.
15:41Au revoir.
15:42Merci.
15:43Now for the show-stopping Welsh dresser.
15:46What have you taken?
15:474 euros.
15:48Ah!
15:4880 euros.
15:49Brilliant.
15:50Merci beaucoup.
15:51Merci beaucoup, monsieur.
15:52I think the boys will be really happy.
15:55I do.
15:55We can adapt bits.
15:56We can work on them.
15:58Yeah, I think we've got a good amount of stuff.
16:00And for 105 euros, we're winners.
16:02Oh, my absolute bargain.
16:04Absolute bargain.
16:05Back over with Fernando and Saurabh.
16:07So, just waiting for the reply.
16:10And then we're going to have to take the decision.
16:12They have some good news about the pallets.
16:14Woo!
16:15Yes!
16:16We just replied.
16:17We're going to get...
16:18No.
16:18We're going to ping it through the letterbox.
16:20Let's do that.
16:24So, should it start loading?
16:26I think.
16:34Successful.
16:35Pallets secured.
16:36And their team mates seem to be doing well at the Bricant.
16:39I can't believe I cheap it.
16:40This is incredible.
16:42It won't be expensive, surely.
16:44This would be really good for the chess table.
16:46This is the biggest mirror they have.
16:48I think it's a really cool statement piece for the space.
16:51It is very big.
16:52It would cover the back of the bar.
16:54And it's not the only thing Xavier has spotted.
16:57That looks long enough, too.
16:59I think that's super cool.
17:01It's so cool.
17:02Excuse me.
17:03These pieces of wood, are they for sale?
17:04I can't sell it to...
17:05Okay, who can?
17:06That's my boss.
17:07Where's your boss?
17:09Xavier wants to purchase the Bricant display rack.
17:12Do you think we can just buy one of these?
17:14I would assume so.
17:16To repurpose the wood for their bar worktop.
17:18Which might take a little bit of...
17:21Encouragement.
17:21Haggling and encouragement.
17:22I guess we'll be married.
17:24Money down, he said it's not for sale.
17:25That is so disappointing.
17:26That's, yeah, depressing.
17:27Never mind.
17:28Oh, gosh.
17:31That was such a nice find.
17:33We'll have to just go back with what we have.
17:34Oh, perfect.
17:36Perfect.
17:38See you later.
17:39Bye-bye.
17:40Au revoir, you too.
17:42The pair have spent 183 euros of their 1,000 euro budget.
17:51Back at the chateau, the shopping teams are returning with their purchases.
17:57One team are starting to see some real progress.
18:01Hello.
18:02Hi.
18:02We are back.
18:03Oh, my gosh.
18:05Oh, wow.
18:06Well done.
18:07Look at this.
18:08What do you think?
18:08I love it.
18:09Have a look.
18:09It's so nice.
18:11It's really good.
18:12It's perfect.
18:12Has it got the wow factor when it's done, do you think?
18:14Yeah.
18:14It looks great.
18:15Yeah, it's really lovely.
18:17And they can now get to work on their modular bar.
18:25It's great.
18:26It's fantastic.
18:27I really think we can make that work.
18:29With their first day done, there's now only five days left for our teams to transform these chateau garages into
18:35fully functional entertainment spaces.
18:38We've bought loads of great stuff, Nell and I.
18:40Getting some panelling onto the walls itself.
18:43Yeah.
18:44I think that was probably my highlight.
18:45My next highlight is obviously when the girls came back with all the things that you bought.
18:49Yeah.
18:50Oh, thank you.
18:50I can't believe how much you've got.
18:52I know.
18:53You've got a lot for the minute.
18:53And the price as well.
18:54I know.
18:54And the panelling looks fantastic.
18:56Yeah.
18:56Well done.
18:57Oh, wow.
18:58Oh, it looks good.
19:00Sam and I have worked really well together.
19:02We've got, you know, we've really bonded.
19:04We almost had a manhug at one point.
19:05Oh, cute.
19:05Yeah, I know.
19:06Are you going to swap on those?
19:07No.
19:08Okay, cool.
19:09Just checking.
19:09Just checking.
19:10Wait, wait, wait.
19:10Go slow.
19:11Go slow.
19:11Because I've got to go down the steps still.
19:13Today has been a bit challenging, I think.
19:15It's felt a bit slow.
19:17Yeah.
19:17I'm also gutted not to get a hold of that oak.
19:19Absolutely gutted by that oak.
19:21Top for the bar.
19:22Oh!
19:23It's okay.
19:24Oh, my God.
19:26I'll get the star.
19:28So today, I think we feel like we're not as fast as we would like to have been.
19:34But we're going to have a very productive day tomorrow.
19:37And then we'll be on track.
19:38Oh, wow.
19:39Wow.
19:39Isn't it amazing?
19:40Yes.
19:41There was a few things that obviously made us slower today.
19:44It was difficult because it was a bit disjointed.
19:46Because Fernando and Sarab were out this morning.
19:49And then we were out this afternoon.
19:50And we haven't spent the day together as a team.
19:52So we've had very minimal time together with them.
19:54Yeah.
19:54Which has also been a bit, it's felt very disjointed.
19:57It's made the communication a bit more difficult, hasn't it?
20:00Yeah.
20:01In different places at different times.
20:02We tried as hard as we could.
20:04We have been slowed down along the way.
20:06But we have obviously made the most of what we could.
20:07It's so good.
24:16It's a fantastic look and shabby chic and oops we run out of time and money.
24:19We're not going to cross that line are we?
24:20No, no, no, no, no.
24:21So you're going to still paint it.
24:23Again, there's going to be sanding to blend in the paint together like somewhere you'll
24:27see the wood, somewhere you'll see the colours.
24:29We don't want to hide the original beauty of the palette but still we want to incorporate
24:33colours together.
24:35Celebrating these beautiful bits of nature.
24:37Yes.
24:37You've got a lot to do.
24:38You're slightly behind schedule.
24:39I look forward to see what you get up to by the end of the day.
24:43No problem.
24:44Thank you, Max.
24:44the burgundy and mint team have spent over 200 euros of their 1,000 euro budget
24:51meanwhile Sam from the yellow and navy team has nearly finished the paneling
24:55looking good looking good yeah just as Nell and Elizabeth return with paint
25:00supplies having spent 305 euros of their budget and they're wasting no time
25:06getting it on the garage doors it's exciting this
25:13yeah yeah that's the color I think it's gonna go well with it
25:17lovely shade of green not nice and light yeah no I like it yeah I think that's
25:23beautiful let me just stand back and look at it just thinking if you're walking
25:27into this room you're gonna see that it's gonna jump out at you I think it's really
25:32good as part of this week's challenge the teams must include a bar in their
25:37entertainment space the number you have called is not recognized
25:42Mauritian raised Xavier can speak French so he's the best person to try and hunt
25:46down oak to complete their bar so I'm just racking through the numbers for the
25:50nearest sawmills to us you are pretty nearby let's try you and now on about 10
25:55sawmills down with no luck no one's even answered the phone yet because we fell in
25:59love with a piece of wood at a block on that they wouldn't sell to us and I just
26:04think it would be a really good feature point for the bar area and for the entire room
26:28oh wow all right okay so he says there is a place literally opposite him and it just had just
26:33so
26:33what happens that this place is actually like walkable distance on the road
26:36Bonjour monsieur ça va je cherche une planche de chêne avec ses écorces là -dessus coupé en longueur
26:46est-ce que vous pouvez faire ça ici non soit il y a une série près d'ici qui qui
26:51peut
26:51messi messi vous êtes une grosse demi-heure 30 minutes ok merci tout à l'heure it was not easy
26:58to
26:58fumble through that conversation if my French was slightly more advanced I could have pushed a
27:02bit harder he suggested a sawmill about 20 minutes from here half tempted to make an executive
27:10decision but I feel like I should probably inform Fernando and Sarab beforehand really
27:14while Xavier heads back to the chateau to regroup with his teammates over in the workshop Ed on the
27:21navy and yellow team is making good progress with their modular bar now this looks interesting hello
27:30how you doing I'm good how are you I'm all right yeah I'm getting there now this isn't a technique
27:34you
27:34see every day I'm really intrigued as to why you're using it this is a really ancient technique it's called
27:42the French cleat and the reason I've chosen to do this is because I want to be able to fix
27:46to the
27:46back of the unit so you can't see any of the fixings from the front but I still need to
27:50be able to hang
27:51it to the wall so what I've created here is this profile here so this bit will fix to the
27:57unit and
27:58then there will be the mirrored version of it which will be fixed to the wall and the two just
28:04slot
28:04together like that that is super satisfying isn't it originally these old pieces of furniture had no
28:11fixings visible because I used to use these beautiful methods yeah yeah so actually you're
28:16replicating that in the modern way absolutely so we don't want to see these these horrible screw
28:20heads being sensitive to the original building I like it yeah right need you to it thanks very
28:25much all right hello hi hi baby how are you bad news on the oak front I went to the
28:32place that we
28:33were kind of recommended to go to they said they didn't have anything like that so guys let's drop
28:37the idea because it's becoming too complicated so let's not waste time so we just build it from
28:41scratch okay not wanting to give up on his French oak top I'll just forget the and ignoring Fernando's
28:47request of building a bar from scratch Xavier has one last lead to follow there's loads of outbuildings
28:53here and we haven't even checked any of them yet clock and check all the last of the outbuildings
29:00because there are a ton and we haven't even been in all of them yet there might be something it
29:05might
29:05be like a beam or something or something fall right over that we can try and reclaim and there
29:10is one more outbuilding to check the chateau's old bread oven yes oh my god okay this would work
29:20this is exactly what we're after guys they have it there's like bits that we can use and there's like
29:30loads of them there's enough for all of it and I found it in there and it's weathered we can
29:35like
29:35clean it up do you think it's gonna the pallet wood is gonna sustain the weight of it yeah it
29:40will
29:40because it's like it's on its side so it's got a lot of strength that way I mean pallets are
29:44designed
29:45to kind of hold like really heavy things okay what's happening I found a bit of oak is that really
29:51there's oak in the outhouses let's go pick it up now Xavier found some very old wood available here
29:57on the side yeah look there's loads of it there's literally loads of it there's like all these gnarly
30:04flat on one side like how good would that look on the end of a bar I have a lot
30:12of reservations
30:12because this wood doesn't look in the right state they are really really old some of them might be
30:17rotten they are just all sort of shapes and we don't have the time because the countertop we have
30:24to build it quickly there's so many of them there's hard to even pick one if it's no good I'm
30:31going
30:31home that's just how it is I'm prepared to take that risk I am just a bit pessimistic I think
30:37we
30:38can do this he guarantee he can get something out of it taking full responsibility Xavier if this doesn't
30:43work out this is on you I can try I can literally cry I've been chasing this down from in
30:49Normandy for
30:50like two days yeah and it's sat right there under our noses oh mate I was living and dying by
30:57this
30:57piece of oak oh god sorry I was running around aimlessly trying to find pieces of oak that were
31:06right under my nose the whole time because it didn't just look in right where we were I've been
31:12up I've been down I've been sideways I cried actually cried so that was great super embarrassing no it's
31:21not embarrassing there's too late now recently engaged they have plans to get married at the
31:27chateau but no they face an uphill battle to make it to the grand finale I haven't done anything on
31:32this
31:33scale before but we've done um you know bits and pieces bit of wallpapering oh geez right let's get
31:39on with the other bits hey yeah I can tell that Saurab's quite scared of both my enthusiasm and the
31:45actual physical pieces of oak but I'm willing to stake this on it we're now halfway through this
31:54renovation challenge teams can we gather outside please oh what oh and I are looking worn out very
32:06tired it's time for your first petite challenge so if you'd like to follow me to the workshop where
32:12you'll find out what you'll be doing let's go oh gosh welcome to your first petite challenge each
32:30week I'll set a couple of petite challenges to test your ingenuity creativity and ability to work against
32:37the clock all of which are key traits in running a property of this scale in France successfully
32:42earlier today I was rummaging around in the cellar and I found these wonderful wine bottles which got
32:51me thinking every good entertainment space in a chateau needs a wine rack so today you have two hours
33:00to design and manufacture a wine rack that holds 12 bottles of wine or more 12 you'll be competing in
33:08your individual pairs against your teammates to try and win this challenge right interesting once the
33:15time is up I'll be selecting a winning wine rack from each team which will take pride of place in
33:22your
33:22finished entertainment area happy yeah excited yes right I'll stop whining on and let you get
33:30started you've got two hours from now I've got an idea yeah I like the idea of being for quite
33:35a simple
33:36design pegs why pegs I mean it's just an idea not too complicated because I'm worried we could
33:42potentially run out of time maybe it's so possible we can make a wine like this a wine tree no
33:48I don't
33:48like that so four balls of wine for me try make like a castle tiny top like that three sorry
33:54yeah
33:55exactly like this but this one when you cross like this this will fit in here that is gonna be
34:01a much
34:03harder to make but this is pretty simple yeah that's what we've got two hours to make put some like
34:07nice
34:07color at the back what are you struggling with I do not know what you mean I'm gonna just draw
34:13it for
34:14you yeah shall we get going yeah yeah so let's have a look in the shed we've never ever done
34:19anything like this before so this is gonna be really interesting this four determined pairs are
34:33competing in a renovation showdown for a chance to win a chateau in Northwest France do we want it that
34:39thick or do you want it that thick I think it should be thick as part of their first challenge
34:44renovating the chateau's garages into entertainment spaces I've now given them just two hours to battle
34:51it out in their first ever petite challenge feels a bit weird going off against it's a bit sad isn't
34:56it
34:56because we've all been working together as a team and now we're going to see each other to design and
35:01create a wine rack using materials from the workshop so how are we gonna get this assembled together so
35:06this we can cut and then moving can fit in together just practice trying to take it out
35:14how high is that then just measure it 42 that improve on which means I have to cut 45 degrees
35:21making pegs that are strong enough is going to take too long as we're obviously doing more of a
35:25gardeny theme in our room so we thought we could do something that looks a bit like a tree so
35:29we've
35:29got basically like a central piece and then we're gonna have a lot of branches coming out
35:33Xavier and Tash are not the only ones thinking about incorporating the chateau's garden
35:41the plan is to make a tree like wine rack so this would go upright and the wine bottles will
35:48sit in
35:48it this way our mints pair are making sure their design will hold 12 wine bottles so the idea is
35:57it's half a cut on first foot the other cut on the other wood they're gonna interlock together and sit
36:02together this is the most I've ever seen you measuring do things you're talking about you
36:07measured everything wrong in our house and I had to remeasure it remember that's not true
36:1460. Edward and Nello they've cracked on them yeah they're really doing well that's the halfway
36:19mark everybody you've got 60 minutes left one two three four how long is it taking you to do one
36:25hole
36:30I just need a thicker one this looks interesting how are we getting on I think we've got a vision
36:37in
36:38mind what is the vision can I have a look inside your brains please essentially a shelving unit with
36:45three shelves with a little lip on the front that basically sums it up I got that from the sketch
36:49what
36:49that sketch doesn't show is a bit more detail at the top and that might evolve as we carry on
36:57the
36:57process it may look like teeth at the top you had me until you said about it looking like teeth
37:02at the
37:02top that's slightly worrying did you get a vibe from Max then I think he thought it was quite good
37:08until you mentioned teeth what just happened did it snap has it snapped yeah what are we gonna do we
37:18are
37:18really covering ourselves in glory right now so this is old floorboard we made these cuts here in
37:31the middle so it will be solid like structurally sound the weight of the waters will settle down
37:39yeah yes yeah confident yes yes so we need to pack on it's gonna be finished yes okay good luck
37:50thank you I had a piece of pine that snapped into oh that's the way the grain goes isn't it
37:55I didn't
37:55think about that one this is the joy of upcycling I know and shadows nothing is plain sailing talk to
38:01me about the general design so the design is that it's sort of based on a kind of a tree
38:05so our idea
38:05was to have kind of this central column and then to have some sort of chevron pieces running along it
38:11that will hold a bottle each so that you've got 12 bottles in like a long line that you could
38:15put
38:15on the wall or make a nice display out of so referring to nature that you'll see through those
38:20doors yeah so I'm gonna leave you to it because you need to spend a lot more time on that
38:24to be the
38:25winners exactly okay thank you we're making a wine tree this is the trunk and we're just gonna drill
38:35holes in there wide enough for the neck to fit in and these become the branches it's making me nervous
38:51saying this everybody but you've got 10 minutes to go right I think it's gonna work better out
38:57now the plan is not coming to base about yeah we've got 72 okay they've got to be even space
39:11okay you
39:12got it it definitely fits we wanted to add the slot to hang the wine glasses so we found this
39:19this was
39:19a leftover bit we're just trying to figure out how we can make it work careful it's nearly wine o
39:30'clock
39:30everybody you've got just five minutes left should not be back in there no that's all right two hours
39:37flies I know I told you that put it together just drill it in it's fine sorry sorry sorry yeah
39:43hold
39:48these for me ready yeah face do we want a base I don't go on a base oh cross yeah
39:57three minutes left
39:59let's go right plus ones well we have the structure yes that's it right everybody time up tools down
40:16it's time to show me your designs Elizabeth Sam talk me through design I think one of the key words
40:27is
40:27rustic affectionately calling this the turret teeth tower of wine wine this is where it falls apart and
40:36there's like a river of old wine I'll pass them to you yeah thank you stand back well I think
40:44that is a success
40:45you've done it thank you you've done it right next Edwin and Nell remind me of the design it's a
40:53wine tree
40:54the bottles go in here and we made it floor standing so no matter where you are in the chateau
40:59you're never
40:59far away from 12 bottles of wine yeah have you tested to see if it actually works no no would
41:05you
41:05like to do we have to okay here we go starting at the top interesting it's like Jenga I'm just
41:14gonna
41:14take a step back oh no that one's not gonna no it's not happening we got overconfident no no I'm
41:26not
41:26gonna do it lessons learned lessons learned okay right then to the next fingers crossed it holds more
41:32than one wine bottle Fernando Saurab how have you done the design here is simple and robust and
41:42functional but what's this additional part you just can hang glass in there and whenever you feel like
41:46just pour your wine and drink can we see just how robust it is by putting the 12 wine bottles
41:51in a
41:51place and as you can see you have a room for one more pleased very pleased very pleased with our
42:03Tasha Xavier you had a few early disasters but you seem to have created something how did it go we
42:11had a
42:11really lovely design and executing it was not as simple as we expected but visually does it
42:17represent your original design yes yeah so you're pleased with how it turned out we think so in the
42:22end shall we see if you're pleased once we throw those 12 bottles of wine at it yeah let's give
42:27it
42:27a go let's give it a go go for the other side because I can't watch that side instead of
42:35going anywhere
42:36I'm borderline picking it up and shaking it around that does deserve a round of applause and you do look
42:44pleasantly surprised fantastic well I guess it's time to go and make my decisions
42:57now firstly Elizabeth and Sam I'm not too sure about the the tooth story the castle but what
43:04you created is structurally sound you've used reclaimed materials and it successfully held 12
43:09bottles of wine so well done Edward and now I think I'm as disappointed as you are that big tree
43:16with all
43:17the leaves coming off of it unfortunately for you I can physically hold more bottles of wine in my
43:22two hands than the one bottle that our entire contraption support so I'm pleased to announce the
43:29wine rack going into your entertainment space is Elizabeth and Sam Fernando and Sorab I think your use of
43:42reclaimed materials and those really lovely finishes help your design stand out Tasha and Xavier
43:49halfway through that challenge I thought I was going to see a load of kindling on the table so well
43:54done for pulling it back I'm actually really struggling to decide with your team the wine rack going into
44:00your entertainment space it's Fernando and Sorab I am thrilled yeah our creation is going to end up in that
44:14room yeah are you getting really happy don't know I don't have words to describe and we are over the
44:19moon
44:19it has really boosted our confidence and we really think now we can win this week's challenge I would
44:27absolutely love to be here next week I'd love to get a step closer to the possibility of winning the
44:33chateau but I think the competition is really strong we are gutted to have lost the petite challenge the
44:39time pressure you've got here is unreal looking forward to a good night's sleep and cracking on in
44:44the morning yeah it's not very good under pressure just might have melted a little bit there we are
44:49obviously disappointed that we lost but I'm so proud of us because that was hard we never ever have to
44:56do
44:56that at home and like have something put together in two hours we now have to regroup and really
45:02focus tomorrow because it's a big day next time the pressure is on countertop is a massive risk I've
45:09put myself on the line two teams are going head-to-head I hate the scene as they continue to
45:16battle it out
45:17over grass and this stuff it'll just snap the caster's off for a chance to win this stunning French
45:22chateau time's up tools down oh man who will impress it was an incredibly tough decision and which pair
45:29will be sent home the pair leaving us today is
45:35so
45:39so
