00:00Congratulations on the film.
00:01What is it like to watch a movie in front of a live audience here?
00:06I think this movie specifically is a whole ride.
00:09It's an incredibly unusual film.
00:12I think it's a product of exactly Boots Riley's mind.
00:17It's unique. It's its own little thing.
00:19It's a movie that assesses a lot of things.
00:22Bring me up.
00:24I feel hot for him.
00:26Mention me.
00:26Yeah, mention Eric Andre.
00:28He's incredible.
00:29He has a little Mexican font.
00:30He's a Mexican font.
00:32He's a Caribbean racist.
00:33When you support Latin people, then we can talk.
00:36I will figure that out eventually.
00:37When you support Latin people today, we can do it.
00:41We can have a full conversation.
00:42Oh, we'll have a podcast.
00:44It's the hat I bought at the first store, five minutes to work.
00:46Okay, lovely.
00:48Eric, come on.
00:48There's obviously a movie about fashion.
00:50So, like, what is creating the outfit for tonight?
00:54Or is it hotter space than other products?
00:57You're asking me about fashion?
00:59He bought that hat five minutes ago.
01:01Yeah, the hats and the boats were at the first store, five minutes.
01:04I went to the Goodwill Bargain.
01:06Well, it's a good hat.
01:08Can I try that?
01:09It's a pretty good hat.
01:11It actually kind of looks kind of like...
01:13You have a smaller head than me.
01:15It kind of matches as well.
01:16You look like you saw Prime in Miami in the 80s.
01:19Miami Vice?
01:20Yeah, we're Prime in San Diego.
01:22Yeah, we're Prime in San Diego.
01:23Where in the world is Prime in San Diego?
01:24What else?
01:25No, I don't know.
01:26Claro que si, mi amor.
01:29Claro que si, mi amor.
01:43Do you want to go and get the immediate feedback?
01:44Yeah, I think so.
01:46I also think when you're premiering movies that are big swings like this, it's a creative,
01:52huge take.
01:53And it's very unique.
01:54And so you don't really know what audiences are going to be expecting and the way they're
01:59going to react.
01:59And so I'm always nervous.
02:00But San Francisco West is such a friendly environment.
02:03People are so kind here.
02:05And I'm lucky enough that I've been three years back to back.
02:08I came first with Three Body Problems last year for Ash.
02:11And this year we have Mike Nicknick and Nellis in this.
02:13So I'm just really, I love Austin.
02:16I lived here for four years.
02:17And the people are so cool.
02:19But I mean, listen, I have a very fond feeling for this film.
02:24I love what the character stands for and what Shane believes in.
02:28And so I was very enthusiastic to see people's reaction in general.
02:33It's a movie with a political stance and it's disruptive.
02:37And we need films that are disruptive and also simultaneously creative.
02:41Is it exciting for you to be a part of a project that feels a little radical, a little political?
02:47Totally.
02:47I think that the subject matters are timely more than ever.
02:51I think he kind of couldn't have read the future more clearly.
02:55The characters itself are just, you know, when you're doing a Boots Riley movie,
02:59every character has its world, its personality.
03:02It's huge.
03:04It's well-rounded.
03:06It's well-written.
03:06The writing is really, really important.
03:08And so I just was really thrilled to see the reaction of people.
03:13And I mean, yeah, as a woman, as a Mexican woman,
03:17portraying this character meant a lot, especially right now,
03:19and it coming out in this moment in time.
03:22Do you remember your first conversations with Boots about the film?
03:24How did you come on board?
03:25Yeah.
03:26I was filming, actually, Mike McNichanellis.
03:28I was in my career.
03:29And I had heard that he was making this movie.
03:32And I called my team and I said, how can we get in this movie?
03:36They're like, they've cast most of the roles.
03:38And I said, just pitch me.
03:40Tell him to think about me for a role.
03:41And there was Chioletta.
03:44And he had a very strong feeling about what he wanted with the character.
03:48And the film was very connected with him the moment I read it.
03:51And I said, I really want to do this bold take.
03:53I'm just going to pitch it to you.
03:55And if you like it, think of me.
03:57If not, I totally understand.
03:58And it was really exactly what I ended up doing.
04:01I just wanted to take a role that pushed me into a different direction
04:03and allowed me to push my creative ideas.
04:07And it's very different to any character I've ever done before.
04:10The last thing I want to ask you, because you were so fond of often,
04:13what is your guide to South by Southwest for somebody who hasn't been here before?
04:18What are the spots they need to hit?
04:19What is the guide for South by Southwest?
04:22I mean, it's hard because there's so much to do.
04:25I mean, you have to have really good barbecue.
04:27You have to get good tacos.
04:29I'm a huge fan of Uchi, the sushi place.
04:32I love going to the Greenbelt.
04:34And then just sunbathing.
04:36I like a good hike.
04:38I mean, there's no way to do South by Southwest.
04:41I think that's the beauty of Austin is there's always something to do.
04:45Everything is unique in its own way.
04:46A dive bar, a restaurant.
04:48You open a fridge or in a club.
04:50It is just insane.
04:52And it's the perfect role for a movie like this to premiere.
