00:00With its mountainous beauty and lush landscape,
00:03the Canadian countryside is as beautiful as it is breathtaking.
00:09Many Canadians are discovering rural life and they're making the move.
00:14We are helping them find their perfect country house.
00:20I love how lush it is. Like there's definitely a lot of greenery. Kind of magical.
00:24It's amazing. I feel like I'm in Barbie's dream house.
00:35Today we're in South Kelowna where we're going to meet up with Steven and Melissa,
00:39who are pretty much tired of the city life.
00:41They want to escape to the country, get some more land and some peace and quiet.
00:44The only catch, they have to get room for themselves, their kids, grandparents and great-grandparents.
00:51If all goes to plan, maybe some horses too. Challenge accepted.
01:04Hello. Hello.
01:05You must be Melissa. Yes. I'm Jeff. Nice to meet you.
01:07Steve. Good to finally meet you guys.
01:09I've heard a little bit about what you're looking for, but I really wanted to go over it with you
01:12in more detail.
01:13From what I hear, you want to have the whole family with you. What do we mean by whole family?
01:18So really it would be us, our two girls that are 10 and 12, and her parents.
01:23Okay. And grandma. And her 94-year-old grandma.
01:26So four generations. Four generations. Okay. We're going to need a little bit of space.
01:30We love family.
01:35How Melissa and I met was 20 years ago. It was in a small town called Squamish.
01:40We were at the local pub, and we were sitting pretty much almost opposite ends of the pub.
01:45I guess I caught her eye as this ravishing, young, good-looking man.
01:49And she came after me.
01:52I had to make the move.
01:54Honestly, from that moment forward, we never left each other's side.
01:59In 2006, we were together at this point two years.
02:03Went to work that day, and I was a tree faller.
02:06We were widening the highway for the 2010 Winter Olympics from Vancouver to Whistler.
02:11I ended up having an excavator bucket hit me in the stomach and go through my pelvis and basically pull
02:18my legs apart.
02:19I ended up going to the hospital for definitely a bunch of months.
02:23Went through over 83 different surgeries to reattach things and try and get back to as close to normal as
02:30could be.
02:31Left the hospital in a wheelchair, and we started trying to do life that way.
02:36Over the years of just never giving up, I eventually got out of a wheelchair, and I can somewhat walk
02:42a little bit now.
02:43His accident was definitely challenging as we were young.
02:48Somehow she found a way to stay with me through this.
02:52To me, this opportunity is a big step for us because it's been so many years about just trying to
02:58rehab, get better,
02:59try and get to as normal of a life as we hoped we could have.
03:03I really want to give back to her and to the family having this beautiful house in a country setting,
03:11something we always talked about even before I got hurt.
03:13And so now that it could almost be a possibility is pretty exciting.
03:18So what we're looking in the house is enough room for the girls to each have their own bedroom with
03:25bathroom.
03:25We need a suite for my parents, hopefully another little area for my 94-year-old grandma.
03:32A really big kitchen. I love cooking. My wife loves cooking.
03:35Definitely space so one day we can have horses.
03:38I would love to have as flat as a yard as possible so that when I do try and help
03:43out with the chores and upkeep
03:45that I have some way of doing it.
03:47For our budget, we're going to try and stay within $4 to $4.5 million is kind of where we
03:52want to stay.
03:53I'm looking forward to seeing these three houses and maybe that's our forever home.
03:56Don't want to move ever again.
04:01If you take just a four-hour drive east of Vancouver, you'll reach Kelowna,
04:06a city that blends urban energy with natural beauty.
04:08With its bustling downtown vibes and stunning views of Okanagan Lake, it's a place that truly has it all.
04:14Head a little further south though and you'll find a quieter, more rural retreat.
04:19One that suits Steven and Melissa who are ready to expand and embrace a lifestyle focused on family.
04:27The first house we have today, I think it's going to check a lot of the boxes.
04:31Looking at it from the curb, what are our first impressions?
04:34Beautifully landscaped.
04:35Yeah.
04:35I love the three-car garage that's separated.
04:38That room from my truck and her vehicle.
04:40Everyone up here has got the toys so you know you got to put the winter ones away, bring the
04:43summer ones out.
04:44I would say the color of the house would probably be not my first choice but it's a more traditional
04:48look to me.
04:49A little bit of paint.
04:50Yeah.
04:51Now what do you say we go inside and take a look?
04:53Let's go.
04:54Let's do it.
05:04Okay.
05:07First impressions as we walk in?
05:10Looks big.
05:11Yeah, lots of rooms.
05:13We've got the wrap around staircase.
05:15Fireplace greets you right as you come in.
05:17On a day like today, you probably don't need to turn that on but you know, you guys get a
05:20lot of snow here in the winter, don't you?
05:21Yes.
05:21Yeah.
05:22Put your boots there?
05:23Yeah.
05:23Yeah, let them dry off right as you come in.
05:25The craftsmanship was amazing.
05:27The high ceilings, the arches, like that was...
05:30Sound molding.
05:31But all the rooms were kind of boxy so I didn't really have that warm feeling as I walked right
05:35in.
05:36What do you say we go check out the kitchen?
05:37Let's go.
05:38Let's do it.
05:46Okay, well we made it to the kitchen.
05:48Lots of natural light which is fantastic.
05:50What do we think?
05:52Yeah, the layout's good.
05:53You can get around even with the bigger crowds in here.
05:56I love the big range.
05:58I love cooking.
05:59If you love cooking, I mean this must be jumping out of you.
06:02Definitely.
06:02Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter.
06:04There's definitely enough room for us both cooking in there at the same time.
06:07While even entertaining guests at the same time.
06:10The kids, there's enough room for all of us in there.
06:12And you know what?
06:13From here, I mean you can see the backyard.
06:14That's nice.
06:15Obviously ideal if you've got a lot of people running around out there.
06:17I want to go check out that backyard.
06:20But why don't you guys go check out the primary suite and then meet by the pool in about 5
06:24-10?
06:24Sure.
06:25Sounds good.
06:25Alright.
06:26See you soon.
06:37I like the crown molding.
06:38It's nice.
06:38I love the fireplace too, right by your bed.
06:41Yeah, when we walked in the primary, I loved the high ceilings.
06:44I loved the fireplace right close to your bed so in the wintertime you could turn that on.
06:47And maybe put a couple glasses of wine with the chairs.
06:50When I walked into the bathroom, I loved the shower, the big tub, the double sinks.
06:55Yeah.
06:55And then the other part I liked, I liked how you could walk through the back of the bedroom to
07:00that gym.
07:01Right.
07:01You could work out and then come right back through that door to go shower.
07:04And I liked that a lot too.
07:06Yeah, that was nice.
07:07So what do you think about the house so far?
07:09It could work.
07:11We'd have to do some little rentals and painting and stuff.
07:14Yeah, it's definitely not the open concept that we like.
07:19Definitely lots of room but just not as open.
07:21But maybe there's more room out in the backyard so we should go see Jeff and find out.
07:27Yeah, let's go.
07:27Okay.
07:39Well, you found me?
07:41Found ya.
07:42Now it took a lot of restraint not to jump in that pool because it is getting hot out there
07:46right now.
07:47Initially, I think when I walked out into the backyard, it was just like, wow.
07:51You got a gazebo that you could be at or you could be where you're cooking for your guests on
07:54the other side.
07:55Yeah.
07:56You got a pool right in the center.
07:57Everywhere you look, it is definitely a stunning backyard and it could easily work for the family, no problem.
08:04I think one big thing, Jeff, that is one of our biggest wish list things is we need enough yard
08:09for farm animals, our kids' horses.
08:14Might be a little tricky to get a few horses back there.
08:16Neighbors might not appreciate us.
08:18They might not like it.
08:19I mean, we could get some ducks in the pond.
08:21So what do you think this one is listed for right now?
08:24Oh, 3.8.
08:263.8?
08:27Okay.
08:28The size is probably like 4.1-ish.
08:31Okay.
08:32Well, we're getting closer.
08:41You've got six bedrooms, six bathrooms, half an acre.
08:45What do you think this one is listed for right now?
08:473.8.
08:493.8?
08:49Okay.
08:50Probably like 4.1-ish.
08:53Okay.
08:53Well, we're getting closer.
08:56Right now it's listed for 4.195.
08:58So just a hair under 4.2 million.
09:01Yeah, the price is great.
09:03Yeah.
09:03We could handle that price for sure.
09:05But I think the reason why we want to move is we want that bit of land to be able
09:10to have farm animals and horses and I think that's just the one thing that this place is missing for
09:15us.
09:15This is house number one, huh?
09:17We've still got two more to go.
09:18Two more.
09:18And I've got a couple surprises in store for house number two that I think you're going to like.
09:23Ready?
09:23Let's go.
09:24Let's do it.
09:31Let's go.
09:35Let's go.
09:37Let's go.
09:39Let's go.
09:44Let's go.
09:50Let's go.
09:53Let's go.
09:55Let's go.
09:56Let's go.
09:58Let's go.
09:58Let's go.
09:58Let's go.
09:58Let's go.
09:59Let's go.
09:59Let's go.
09:59Let's go.
10:00Let's go.
10:04Let's go.
10:06Let's go.
10:07Let's go.
10:11that you see in a magazine or like a movie my only reservation a little bit with you know some
10:17of my
10:17limitations this is a lot of house i'd have to buy a tractor someone's got to do the weeds and
10:22yeah a lot of heat you got me impressed so far there from the outside we're doing good
10:27should we take a look in let's go yeah let's do it
10:42well this is gorgeous love the high ceilings i love how open it is and i can see the living
10:48room
10:48the tv so when the canucks game's on right i can see it while we're cooking now question for you
10:53he likes the high ceilings do you like all the high cabinets well i like the high ceiling but
10:58yeah it looks like it's going to be hard to reach uh some of those rolling step ladder to come
11:02around
11:02here yeah when we walked into the kitchen it was just like the only thing where i could think it
11:06like wow super bright yeah the island was huge the white with the brass like it just totally our
11:12style i love the range has even the matching gold knobs double ovens oh double ovens yes turkeys it's
11:19annoying when you can't have your turkey and if you do a ham and you only have one oven and
11:22i mean
11:23there's a whole butler's pantry around the corner with fully stocked beer fridge checks another box for
11:27me i can see a pool out back and i'm gonna go take a look at that do you guys
11:32want to head upstairs and
11:33check out the primary let's do it i'm excited divide and conquer let's see a bit
11:49it's beautiful wow i love the fireplace linear fireplace tv yeah need some curtains yeah definitely need some
11:57curtains lots of windows from here you can see your fields you can see if you had horses out there
12:03oh yeah that'd be amazing and then that bathroom holy crap that shower is so big you could have a
12:08whole family in there i don't know loved everything about it i could just see ourselves laying in bed
12:14turning the fireplace on glass of wine looking up at the tv and then looking out in the field and
12:19seeing
12:20our horses there that was nice
12:35not the worst backdrop no definitely not what do you think about this whole backyard i mean it's quite
12:41expansive and you've got the pool over there as well you know first thing i've seen is just this
12:45continuous wrap around concrete deck which i really loved lots of different entertaining areas as well
12:50and then you see this pool house that's fully loaded with like dishwasher sink i could see
12:56having like a pizza oven out there bigger barbecue yeah smoker yeah it's nice not to have to have
13:02everything in the kitchen and go out to the pool we could just do everything close by obviously this
13:07one checks quite a few boxes yeah what do we think this one's listed for four seven four eight
13:16uh i'm gonna say based on the last house four five four six ish i think you guys will be
13:25pleasantly
13:25surprised that it's right around 4.4 million really so it's just a hair under the budget but with all
13:34of
13:34this space i think that's a pretty good deal 100 that's awesome yeah it is at the top of our
13:38budget
13:39we wouldn't have a lot of money left over to do anything else so that's something we've got to
13:43consider when making the decision but the best part is jeff has one more house to show us so
13:48you want to go check it out yeah i really do let's do it
14:01house number two checked a lot of boxes for steven and melissa inside and out but with it being
14:06priced at the upper end of their budget they found the idea of maintaining such a large property
14:11slightly intimidating not to worry though i've still got one more option for them and this one
14:17is far from ordinary welcome to house number three a little bit of a contrast from the last one
14:25definitely different different for sure but in a good way i mean this is this is unique this is like
14:31it looks like it's from the future almost the center it looks like a wine like a winery like almost
14:36like
14:36represents like a wine barrel almost the way the curvature of the roof is i can't wait to take a
14:41look
14:41inside i really want to look at should we head in there let's go holy crap yeah this is something
15:02else isn't it the view is incredible and the ceilings got to be 15 20 feet at least at least
15:09yeah anything just right as you jump in the door that you think huh that might not work for me
15:13i
15:14mean the living room it's open but it's like small in a way i get what you mean you kind
15:19of you walk in
15:19and you're there you're right here yeah yeah it was definitely open concept but just a little bit
15:24too modern for me it wasn't that warm cozy feeling
15:30all right we have entered the kitchen big island big island i love the live slab edge on the outside
15:38the fact that you can just see everyone in front of you while you're cooking it's a good layout
15:42everyone can see you when you're in here and i love like right beside is that super big long live
15:47edge
15:47table so again you could fit or all of our family on there for big dinners i also love this
15:53stove it's
15:53so big this whole wall i mean this is a kitchen for someone who wants to use the kitchen and
15:58to have
15:59the outdoor seating right off the kitchen you're not necessarily running all the way back in you're not
16:03going upstairs or anything to get from the barbecue uh hun just imagine when we're prepping food you can
16:07see the lake you'll behind you you can see the orchards like that's kind of wow amazing we still
16:15have a lot to explore do you guys want to start with the uh primary meet back in like 5
16:1910. sure all
16:20right see you soon
16:33the view is incredible wow floor to ceiling glass every morning waking up for that oh that bathroom
16:40is pretty nice i love that drop down rain shower yeah the rain shower is pretty cool the bathtub how
16:45it's curved that's pretty cool too it's definitely obviously way more modern than the last two yeah
16:49i think it's too modern for me the feel it's not as like warm country feel okay let's go meet
16:57jeff
16:58outside okay
17:06can you blame me for soaking up this view no i mean it's pretty breathtaking what did you think about
17:13the
17:13primary first of all uh definitely cool like very modern um i was thinking like it's not as that warm
17:21cozy farmhouse feel that uh i was liking i think it's like a trade-off right like this beautiful scenery
17:28um entertaining on this deck would be incredible right but the trade-off is it's more on a steeper
17:33bank so for me would be a struggle it'd be tougher to have animals up here as well i think
17:38would be the
17:39other tougher thing still you don't have to make up your mind quite yet but let's play the guessing
17:44game so we've seen the first two houses now into house number three what do we think this one's
17:48listed for four million yeah i was gonna say around four okay so you obviously saw my notes
17:57it's 3.995 pretty much right on i think because it's cheaper it to me doesn't take it right off
18:05the
18:05table right away we could try and level out different parts of the property for farm animals
18:08so definitely it's it's doable so what do you say we take a little bit of time to think about
18:13it
18:13we'll rendezvous back and then we can kind of go over all three of them yeah that works for me
18:17all
18:18right yeah let's get out of here
18:31with the house tours out of the way stephen and melissa are off to think about their decision
18:36and in the meantime i'm going to take full advantage of being in wine country by stopping
18:41off at priest creek winery where i'm talking to jane about how this place stands out from the rest
18:47jane i'm jeff nice to meet you such a pleasure to meet you and thank you for having us now
18:51priest creek winery i want to know everything about it i've been to the okanagan before but
18:55i've never been here well we are officially still kelowna's newest winery we just celebrated our
19:00four-year anniversary on the end of may our biggest claim to fame is bringing in big bold reds to
19:05the
19:05southeast kelowna bench and we have 10 acres leased down south of the oliver area to kind of
19:09differentiate our winery from the other wineries in the southeast area our award-winning gewurtz
19:14demeanor has definitely been one of our biggest hits we've won double gold and gold every year
19:19since we've opened at various wine competitions with that one i have to take some of that when i
19:22go home yeah how did you get started in this well kind of by happenstance my husband and i both
19:28grew
19:28up on farms in saskatchewan okay so we bought the property primarily to raise our kids on some land
19:32when we bought the property we had to think long and hard as to what we wanted to do with
19:36it and a
19:37winery kind of made sense with all the beautiful mountain vistas around us well i'm glad you did yeah this
19:41is
19:41quite the spot yeah outside of obviously coming to the most beautiful winery i've ever seen what
19:47do people do in the area why are people deciding to move here i think it's a lifestyle change for
19:51most people you get longer summer seasons you've got hiking you've got skiing you've got mountain
19:57biking yeah it's kind of like a 365 day a year playground it really is it doesn't matter what
20:03season you're in there's always something to do should we go taste some wine perfect let's go
20:07headed sounds good thank you so much thank you this place is gorgeous in fact i think it'd be
20:13the perfect spot to reveal stephen and melissa's decision so i've invited them here and told them
20:18to meet me in the vineyards so i can find out once and for all which house was their favorite
20:26you already have wine waiting for me yes we do you should go house hunting more often i feel like
20:31it's so hot out right now we're being interrogated but honestly this is a fun decision we saw three
20:35incredible houses house number one that we saw great backyard great pool as you walk in it kind
20:42of just felt more boxy and didn't have that same home feel that we're looking for not as open
20:47and i think the other one that is tough to uh wrestle with is the the fact that we couldn't
20:53have farm animals or horses maybe a little tricky to put them in that backyard our neighbors might not
20:58love us neighbors would definitely have a couple of phone calls for you then we moved on to house number
21:04two definitely loved as we first walked down that long driveway loved the feel the rolling country
21:09yeah country the rolling grass hills very homey like just really nice aside from the fact that's
21:14a big piece property it's a lot of work i mean is that something you think you might consider taking
21:18on it could work it could be fun work it could be fun until you do it then you don't
21:22know everybody
21:23helps you know maybe it's a team effort well that's true four generations yeah then we moved on to house
21:29number three it felt like kind of something from the future the the wow factor as you open that main
21:34massive door and you're just like holy i do like that modern look i liked the florida ceiling glass
21:41windows i would say the topography was probably the biggest challenge there to have animals uh to
21:46just maintain the property that would be challenged again for someone like me with some limitations
21:51so if you had to get rid of one i would choose to get rid of number one just because
21:56it doesn't
21:56have enough property we can't have the animals which is truly the reason why we wanted to move
22:00yeah um so kind of defeats the purpose so now it's down to two or three let's hear it yeah
22:07let's hear it
22:10i would choose house number two house number two yeah that seemed to check pretty much every box
22:15i i loved it and honestly just from the second we walked down that driveway i could just you know
22:20picture exactly what you're looking for the pool house and being able to entertain out there
22:24and to be able to tell our girls that they could have horses on their property i think that to
22:27me
22:28is the biggest win of all yeah well i say we uh give the realtor a call yeah let's do
22:33it let's do
22:34a brainer no brainer as quick as possible because i really need to go for a swim cheers
