00:00With its mountainous beauty and lush landscape,
00:03the Canadian countryside is as beautiful as it is breathtaking.
00:09Many Canadians are discovering rural life and they're making the move.
00:14We are helping them find their perfect country house.
00:20I love how lush it is. There's definitely a lot of greenery. Kind of magical.
00:24It's amazing. I feel like I'm in Barbie's dream house.
00:34I'm here in beautiful Orillia, Ontario with David and Beth.
00:38And they've got a long wish list of luxurious wants for their property.
00:41But I'm hoping I can find one that checks all the boxes.
00:45Let's go take a look.
00:52Good morning. Hello, how are you? Hi David, how's it going?
00:56I'm doing well. It's so great to meet you face to face in this beautiful neighborhood.
00:59Right now. I heard that you make guitars for celebrity clients.
01:03I do. I make furniture and guitars for clients all over the world.
01:08It's a really, really fun gig.
01:09This makes sense to me then.
01:10Because I knew that you needed a really nice sized workshop,
01:13which can be a little bit hard to find.
01:14But hey, we've got to please those celebrity clients.
01:17So we're going to definitely find you the right space.
01:20And you're in real estate, right?
01:22I was in real estate.
01:23Okay.
01:23And I actually now work for the municipal government.
01:26Okay, so you've seen a lot of houses in your life.
01:28I love real estate.
01:29Honestly, I'm always on the watch.
01:31Okay.
01:31So this will be fun.
01:35So we're moving from Aurora, Ontario.
01:38We've been there for about 15 years now.
01:40And just coming out here is so relaxing.
01:42You can line up at the grocery store and you have conversations with people in line for no reason other
01:47than you're just standing there.
01:49It's a very different pace of life.
01:52We really like it.
01:54We're looking for a house that will be big enough for us and the two boys and their significant others
02:00during the weekends and stuff when they come out.
02:03But not so big that when the boys leave, it's too big for the two of us.
02:07I love unique.
02:08I don't want a cookie cutter house.
02:10We're looking for something that we want to grow old into.
02:13So not a lot of stairs.
02:15That might be a deal breaker.
02:16Big backyard for our dogs.
02:18You know, that's pretty important.
02:19And a chef's kitchen.
02:21Beth loves to cook.
02:22I think we're comfortable around 1.8.
02:25We definitely don't want to exceed $2 million.
02:29Orillia, also known as the Sunshine City, sits just 90 minutes north of Toronto.
02:34With its stunning waterfront views, lovers of the outdoors will find this place a feast for the eyes.
02:40Being home to venues like the Orillia Opera House, the area has an incredibly rich arts and music scene.
02:46It's the perfect all-around town for Beth and David to call home.
02:53This first house is right at the end of a beautiful, quiet cul-de-sac.
02:58Normally, it's a little bit quieter, but there still is construction going on because most of these houses are still
03:03quite new, actually.
03:04So you're going to get the benefit of having this beautiful scenery, but also having modern amenities, which I think
03:09is going to be fantastic.
03:11I love how it's so country, but it's still city.
03:14Yeah, I mean, it's very Muskoka from the outside.
03:18This one definitely meets the bill.
03:19And actually, I don't see houses that are this dark color too often.
03:22I feel like it brings in all the elements of the trees and the rock scape.
03:26We're excited to see this one.
03:28Let's go take a look inside.
03:34Here we go.
03:36Wow.
03:38This is gorgeous.
03:40It is gorgeous.
03:41Look at this beam work.
03:43Does this not say country living?
03:45And look at this fireplace.
03:47That's what I was going to say next, the fireplace.
03:49You wanted to look everywhere.
03:51The ceilings were fantastic.
03:53That fireplace was pretty incredible.
03:54Now, you are a wood fanatic, so you have to really appreciate all the beautiful wood that's going on.
03:59Oh, absolutely.
04:00I mean, what it takes to build something like this is pretty astonishing.
04:04Why don't we take a closer look at the kitchen?
04:06Sounds good.
04:07All right.
04:12Well, Beth, I'm not a cook like you are, but I do know a chef's kitchen when I see one.
04:17This is amazing.
04:18The stove.
04:19A huge, like, what is a six or eight burner stove?
04:22Oh, it's two ovens too.
04:24Yeah.
04:24The kitchen I absolutely loved.
04:26I thought it was beautiful.
04:28I love the stove.
04:29That built-in coffee maker, I mean, that's a morning dream right there.
04:33Yeah.
04:33What do you think about this color palette overall?
04:35I love it, but I also feel like it would be very high maintenance.
04:41Those black cabinets do concern me.
04:44I, that's, that's my one sticking point in that kitchen.
04:47Loved the range.
04:48But you see everything on black.
04:50You see everything on black.
04:52Well, there's so much to explore in this house, including the beautiful principal bedroom.
04:56So I'm going to send you in there to have a look and then I'm going to meet you outside.
04:59Sounds great.
05:00Okay.
05:00I'll see you outside.
05:05Oh, wow.
05:06Oh, my.
05:09This is fantastic.
05:10Look at this fireplace.
05:12I love that.
05:13And the ensuite, that's fantastic too.
05:15Do you see how big that one is?
05:16Yeah.
05:16To me, that ensuite was right out of Scarface.
05:19Like it just black and concrete.
05:22Look at that closet.
05:23I think there's enough room for your clothes in there.
05:25I hope so.
05:27One thing I was thinking as we were walking through, I wasn't seeing a lot of storage.
05:31But in the top of the closet, there was lots of storage space up there too.
05:35Yeah, I think they've really utilized a lot of the height in this house.
05:38The doors were fantastic too, that they used the full height.
05:42Yeah, I really like the transom.
05:43I've never seen that before.
05:44I think we should go find Amanda and see what the price is.
05:48I'm almost afraid to know.
05:49It scares me a little bit.
05:51Let's go.
06:01Oh wow, now this is a backyard.
06:04I thought the inside was great.
06:06Doesn't it feel like a little resort in that bedroom?
06:09It's very serene.
06:10Yeah, hard to hide our poker face I think.
06:12Yeah, yeah.
06:13And now look at us standing in one of the most epic parts of this property.
06:18Look at this.
06:20Flat, perfect for having huge parties out here.
06:23Yeah, that fire pit's epic.
06:24Yeah.
06:24We can definitely have some good parties here for sure.
06:27Yeah.
06:28You can entertain indoors or outdoors with a full second kitchen.
06:31I think this one's going to be for you.
06:33You'd make me clean this one.
06:35If you think that the kitchen is good, can you imagine that that huge building there is actually a shop
06:42which would be perfect for your woodworking business?
06:44I was looking at that and it looks like it's big enough.
06:48It's beautiful and how they've actually built it to match the rest of the house so everything feels so cohesive.
06:53This is luxury.
06:55But I'm a little bit terrified to know how much this one costs.
06:58Oh, now, now.
06:59Don't bring down the fun talking about money.
07:01Come on.
07:02Well, what do you think this house costs?
07:05I think this one's out of our budget.
07:06I'm going to say 2.2.
07:10And you have valuable insight from your career as a real estate agent, right?
07:14I'm very optimistic.
07:15I'm hoping that it's more of 1.8.
07:18Are you ready for it?
07:27A beautiful one-acre property.
07:30All of this stunning woodwork.
07:33Are you ready for it?
07:36This house is $2 million.
07:38Ooh, right at the top of our budget.
07:41I'm sensing not terrible.
07:43I didn't get a gasp of, like, freak out.
07:45Not surprised with the budget, with the price on this one.
07:50Maybe there's some room for negotiation.
07:52But we still have two more houses to see.
07:54So, you know, this one's pretty great, but...
07:56I mean, it was a great starting point.
07:58For sure.
08:00Beth and David were fans of house number one's Muskoka modern style.
08:04But the next house I've got for them is a little bit of a shift.
08:07Buried deep within the forest on a massive plot of land,
08:10it could be the true country getaway that they're after.
08:14Well, here we are at house number two.
08:17And I don't know about you, but I loved that very picturesque, very windy driveway.
08:22Did you notice that, like, clearing, that bump out?
08:25I did.
08:25As soon as we drove past that, I thought that would be a great spot for shop.
08:29That's exactly what I was thinking.
08:31Grab your cup of coffee and just saunter down your beautiful driveway into your woodshop.
08:36So here we are at this beautiful house.
08:39This house is actually a little bit bigger than the first house that we saw.
08:42You've got 50 acres here.
08:44If you want country living, this is it.
08:47It's kind of got a barn dominium thing going on.
08:51A barn dominium?
08:52A barn dominium.
08:53Yeah.
08:53Please tell me what this means.
08:55In the design world, I've not heard this before.
08:57If it was a barn that was converted into a cool house.
09:01Oh, okay.
09:02A barn dominium.
09:03Cool.
09:03I can see why you say that because also it's got that metal roof, which we don't see that all
09:07the time.
09:07Right.
09:07I think that's kind of interesting.
09:09Well, shall we go have a look inside?
09:11Yes.
09:11All right.
09:12Let's take a look.
09:22Well, here we are in a very quaint entry.
09:26Now, remember I told you this house was bigger than house number one.
09:29Right.
09:29And maybe this little entry zone doesn't feel like it right now, but it's actually divided into two really fantastic
09:36living spaces.
09:37This whole space here is actually totally self-contained.
09:41So maybe the boys could have a little bit of space to themselves.
09:44Well, you guys could be up on the more main living area.
09:47I wouldn't mind that.
09:48I don't hate that at all.
09:49Love that.
09:49I wasn't sure if it would be a harder sell or not.
09:51Not at all.
09:52The boys, you know, they are getting older.
09:55We love having them close by, but they're at that point in their life where they need their own space
10:00and so do we.
10:01So I think that was actually a really great little space for them.
10:09Well, I think this pretty much epitomizes a country kitchen.
10:12It's much different than the first house.
10:15Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
10:19Um, it's probably my least favorite part of this house is the kitchen.
10:22I mean, it's very charming.
10:24I like the countertops quite a bit.
10:26You know, I find red oak to be a little bit dated, so I think I'd paint the cabinets.
10:30It would modernize it a fair bit.
10:32I can see you guys in here working your design magic.
10:34My brain's already starting to work with some of this.
10:37For sure.
10:37Oh, fantastic.
10:39The principal suite in here, to say that it's spacious is an understatement.
10:43So I'm going to send you to have a look at that and I'm going to go outside and I'll
10:47meet you by the pool.
10:48Sounds great.
10:48Have fun touring.
10:53Laundry?
10:57Oh, look at the en suite.
10:59Wow, that's really big.
11:01This is like its own little private wing.
11:03Yeah.
11:05Oh my.
11:07This is huge.
11:09Wow, look at all the cabinet space.
11:12That'd be hard to fill that up.
11:13That primary space was its own complete sanctuary.
11:18Yeah.
11:19Basically an apartment.
11:20I love the windows.
11:21They're so, it's so bright.
11:22And it makes the room feel warmer.
11:24Yeah.
11:25I think that space maybe needed a little bit of updating.
11:28There's a lot of white in there.
11:29But for the most part, you know, that's pretty move-in ready, that spot.
11:40Hi.
11:41Was I being honest about that bedroom?
11:44It's got its own area code.
11:45Yeah.
11:45I mean, it's massive.
11:47This is a beautiful pool.
11:48I love how they've done this kidney shape.
11:50It's very inviting.
11:51You've got like all of these amazing different color and species of trees as your backdrop.
11:56It is very private.
11:57Maybe it's a clothing optional pool at this point.
12:00It's like you and Deer back here.
12:01Literally that's it.
12:02Because nobody needs to see that.
12:04So it's perfect for us.
12:05So having said all of that, now that you've seen all of this, what do you think the price
12:11is on this house?
12:11This one's tricky, you know.
12:13The 50 acres stumps me.
12:14Yeah.
12:15The 50 acres, the private long drive.
12:17Again, you know, I'm going to say that we're probably pushing to the max of the budget.
12:23I'm going to call this one right on 2 million.
12:25Okay.
12:26I'm going to say 1.9.
12:28Again, it's the 50 acres that throws me because that is fantastic.
12:32Exactly.
12:33So the price of this house is $1,999.
12:38Right on the button.
12:39So when you say a hair under, it is just a hair under.
12:43I love the property.
12:44I love the house.
12:45The downside to it is that we still need to find some money to build me a shop.
12:50So that is the downside to this one.
12:52But our adventure continues.
12:54So let's head over to house number three.
12:55Can't wait to see it.
12:56Straight this way.
13:07House two managed to impress Beth and David with its multi-floor living and giant principal suite.
13:12But it did lack a garage for David to work out of.
13:15So for this last house, I'm going big with a property that's as large as it is grand.
13:22Well, here we are at house number three.
13:24It's safe to say that this is basically a storybook home.
13:27Very much country estate.
13:29Yeah, it's spectacular.
13:30It is.
13:31You can tell that so much love and care has been put into just the landscaping of this property.
13:35And it's been years and years of curating these beautiful plants.
13:39The curb appeal alone almost sells it.
13:42It's got five bedrooms, which is the largest house that we've seen out of the three.
13:46There's an amazing spot here to create a workshop for you.
13:50So you just have to move in ready with that.
13:51Did you want me to get the checkbook out right now?
13:53I'm looking forward to going inside.
13:55Okay, let's take a trip inside then.
13:57Awesome.
14:12Well, I would say this epitomizes country living.
14:15Look at this amazing kitchen right out of a magazine.
14:18It's got the gas stove.
14:20It's got the pot filler.
14:21The island's fantastic.
14:23What do you think of that painted cabinetry?
14:25Completely different than the other kitchens.
14:26I mean, I love it.
14:27It really suits the overall country vibe.
14:30Very customized cabinets, built-in integrated appliances, really, really high-end.
14:36I think, you know, a home like this, typically the rooms are very broken up.
14:40This feels very open.
14:42Coming into the house and seeing the huge winding staircase, just how clean everything was, the finishing work.
14:49I loved the flow between the living room and the kitchen for socializing.
14:54It was fantastic.
14:55Very little I can say that I don't like about this house so far.
14:59There's actually another great surprise that I want to share with you.
15:02It's in the basement.
15:03You want to join me downstairs for a tour?
15:04Sounds great.
15:04All right, that way.
15:17This is what I want to show you.
15:19You could even have a separate space for the boys in this house.
15:23Nice for us, too.
15:24That's what I was thinking.
15:25Basically force them to hang out down here so you can enjoy the space upstairs.
15:29Right.
15:29But I think it's been so nicely decorated that it doesn't feel like underground.
15:33No, not at all.
15:34Again, it's very bright.
15:35The windows are quite large.
15:37There's even a sauna in this basement.
15:39Another two bedrooms and ample storage.
15:42Really love that the downstairs space could be used for the boys.
15:45My only fear is that it's so good that they may never leave.
15:48Right.
15:48Because at some point in time, we will want to push them out.
15:50And if it's too nice, they may never go.
15:54Well, I want you to actually have a look at the principal bedroom in this house because
15:57it is lovely as well.
15:59You can just imagine because of the rest of the house.
16:01And I'm going to go in the backyard and wait for you out there because I can't wait for
16:05us to tour that space as well.
16:06Sounds wonderful.
16:07Okay.
16:07So let's head back upstairs and outside.
16:16Oh, this is nice.
16:18Oh, it's huge.
16:19Lots of room for furniture or set.
16:22No closet though.
16:24I would have never noticed.
16:26Wow.
16:27Wow.
16:27Oh my.
16:29This is an ensuite.
16:30This, I love the chandelier.
16:33Oh my gosh.
16:34Look at that shower too.
16:35This is not cookie cutter.
16:37It was a showstopper.
16:39The whole upstairs ensuite, it was just classy.
16:42Very tastefully done in every aspect.
16:45This one checks all of the boxes.
16:48Shall we go find Amanda and see what this one's worth?
16:51I think she's outside.
16:52Let's go have a look.
17:00Even this.
17:03Oh wow.
17:04You're not making this easy on us.
17:06Tell me your thoughts about that principal bedroom.
17:09That ensuite is ridiculous.
17:11The bedroom itself is gorgeous.
17:14No closet, which is a little disappointing, but like I'm nitpicking to find something here.
17:18Yeah.
17:18It really kind of epitomizes luxury.
17:20It really does.
17:21The whole house.
17:22It almost feels to me like we're in a beautiful boutique hotel or something because everything
17:27is set up so nicely.
17:29Like everything has been so well thought of.
17:31This idea that you have a screened in porch for if there's mosquitoes out.
17:35To be able to walk through the beautiful garden and enjoy some peaceful relaxation just like
17:40watching the pool, it's pretty amazing.
17:43Absolutely.
17:44So I'm wondering now with seeing all of that, how much do you think this house is?
17:51Again, you know, I gotta, I'm gonna stick right around the $2 million mark.
17:56I'm with him on this one.
17:57I think if we're gonna be hovering two, maybe even two plus.
18:01Two plus?
18:02Okay.
18:02This house is $1,695,000.
18:06Wow.
18:07That is shocking.
18:09Shocking, isn't it?
18:10I couldn't believe.
18:12I'm floored by the price.
18:14Right.
18:14To be honest, I almost feel like, you know, somebody needs to tell them it's too low.
18:19But not yet.
18:21But maybe later somebody needs to say that.
18:23Well, I think there's nothing else we can do but maybe relax, think about it.
18:29You can discuss it and then I'll see which house is your favourite.
18:32Sounds great.
18:32Great.
18:35Coming up next, which house did you decide on?
18:39At the end of the day, we've chosen.
18:48With all three houses now explored, Beth and David have plenty to consider.
18:53So while I wait, I'm popping into the common stove to sample some local cuisine and chat to the owner
18:59to learn more about what Aurelia has to offer.
19:02Hello, Simon.
19:03Thank you so much for welcoming me to your beautiful restaurant here today.
19:07You're very welcome.
19:07So out of all the beautiful country properties that you could choose, why did you choose this particular location for
19:15your restaurant?
19:16Love like pretty much anything that moves people, I guess.
19:20My wife was born and bred here, but had I had the opportunity in this area, I would definitely have
19:25chosen Aurelia, I think.
19:26It is home for me now as much as any place ever has been in the past.
19:30I was born in the UK, I lived in London for a long time.
19:34So, you know, I love the anonymity there, the fact that you're one person in 10 million.
19:38But here in Aurelia, you're one in 30,000.
19:41True.
19:42And as I walk up and down the street over the summer between our restaurants here, I feel like I
19:46know half the city and I love that community.
19:48We're seeing everything in this beautiful summer weather and the trees are gorgeous and the plants are so pretty right
19:55now.
19:56Are the winters tough here or do you enjoy the snow?
19:58If you lean into the winter, it's amazing.
20:01To me, I remember the first time six years ago now where I walked out onto a frozen lake and
20:06it's incredible.
20:07You know, I had that experience at the age of 30.
20:09Probably everyone else here has had when they were three years old.
20:11Yeah.
20:12It's wonderful.
20:13And when it's crisp and white, it's stunning.
20:15And I can only imagine that coming in here for a nice hot meal is the perfect cap off to
20:20either a warm summer evening or a chilly winter evening.
20:24What is your favourite dish that you create here?
20:27Well, pretty much anything cooked over the wood fire is good here.
20:30So that's most of the dishes.
20:31I don't think I've had a ribeye better than the one that we cook here over the wood fire.
20:34So we work closely with some local farms here.
20:38All of our meat comes from Ontario.
20:40There's some really great produce in this part of the world.
20:42I loved hearing about Simon and his restaurant's place here in the Orillia community.
20:47But now it's time to find out if Beth and David have come to a decision.
20:51Which one of these three houses will become their new home?
20:57Well, nice to see you.
20:58Nice to see you as well.
20:59Oh my goodness.
21:00We had such a busy day yesterday.
21:02So let's think back about the houses.
21:04Because even for me last night, I was like running them back through my mind and trying to think like
21:08what decision would I make if I were you?
21:11So house number one, modern Muskoka, right?
21:14Just the overall aesthetics of it was everything we're looking for.
21:17The high ceilings were amazing.
21:19The concrete floors, those are pretty cool, especially having dogs.
21:23And how are you feeling about black cabinets and those fingerprints?
21:25There's some give and take in everything.
21:28And the fact that there were black cabinets, it was actually a little intriguing.
21:32I felt like out of the three places that offered the best space for a shop, many great things to
21:39like about that first house.
21:42Moving on to house number two, that was so much acreage.
21:45Like if you want country living, that driveway driving into it was like a postcard.
21:50I mean, who doesn't dream of a driveway like that where you're so far back in off the road?
21:55And that suite was the largest suite I've ever seen.
21:59It was so big and so bright.
22:01And you could walk right out to the pool.
22:03It was so tranquil.
22:04You could picture deer walking through that scene.
22:06Oh, totally.
22:08House number three, I mean, we can all agree how spectacular the gardens are.
22:12That chef's kitchen too.
22:14Every detail I think in that house has been so well thought out for a family.
22:18And just so cared for, that entire home.
22:21You could really feel the love in there.
22:23But what it kept coming back to was, is it too much house?
22:27Yeah.
22:27We're not sure, but we love that house.
22:30It's so beautiful.
22:31What a great house.
22:32So now that you've had a night to digest, which house did you decide on?
22:37House number two was the first house that we eliminated from it.
22:41Okay, we're going backwards.
22:42You're keeping the intrigue going for me now.
22:44That house just needed too much.
22:46And we felt by building a shop would be another half a million dollars at least.
22:50And at the end of the day, we've chosen house number one.
22:56It's not so big that once the boys moved out, it would be too much house for us.
23:01From an entertaining standpoint, it makes perfect sense.
23:04Maybe some of your celebrity clients are going to want to come over.
23:06Well, let's hope so.
23:08Well, I think all that's left to do is to call the realtor and make an offer.
23:11Let's make it happen.
23:12Woo! Cheers to that.
