00:01Australians have always loved the beach,
00:04so many of us are now making the move to our beautiful coastlines.
00:11Our beachfront dreamers want crashing waves and salty sea air,
00:15so grab your sunscreen and join us on the hunt
00:18for the ultimate beach house.
00:21It's been a hard day hunting.
00:30I'm working with a gorgeous young family,
00:33Dan, Shay and their little baby Harvey.
00:36They've been living in a two-bedroom apartment
00:38and they've finally decided that now is the time
00:40to find their forever family home.
00:43It's not going to happen that close to the city,
00:45but we would like to be by the water,
00:47so here we are in the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula, Frankston.
00:50Let's see how we go.
00:56We just love being outdoors.
00:58Beach is such a great place to be
01:00and there's nothing better than the water in summer,
01:02just living that outdoors lifestyle.
01:04We're looking to buy a family home with more space,
01:07close to the beach, close to amenities,
01:10where we can continue to grow our family.
01:13We have a little 18-month-old Harvey,
01:15hoping to have another baby soon,
01:17so he needs something.
01:18Obviously, with more bedrooms,
01:19we're in a little unit at the moment.
01:21Our budget is around $1.35,
01:24so ideally looking for three-bedroom minimum,
01:27preferably four,
01:28so we have that spare room option for family to come and stay.
01:32Big backyard, ideally,
01:33because Harvey loves being outside,
01:34so space for him to explore and spend time outside.
01:38And we need a bath.
01:40Yeah, especially with the...
01:42Not for Harvey, for Dan.
01:43Yeah, I'm a bit of a bath man,
01:45so we'll say it's for Harvey.
01:48Bath man Dan.
01:49Nestled on Victoria's picturesque coastline,
01:55Frankston is one of the most underrated gems,
01:58offering a laid-back beachside lifestyle,
02:00family-friendly atmosphere
02:02and a growing arts and food scene.
02:04With stunning beaches, parklands
02:06and a strong sense of community,
02:08Frankston is the perfect place
02:10for Dan and Shay's forever home.
02:12Good morning, Shay. Hey, Dan. How are you?
02:20Hi, Shay. How are you?
02:21Great to see you.
02:22Very excited about today
02:23because nothing gives me more joy
02:25than sticky baking through houses.
02:27I'll be honest about it.
02:28We love it as well.
02:29I know this is going to be your first real home
02:32and it is a big move from a unit
02:34to a full block of your own.
02:36What are you really hunting for?
02:37Look, I think we're just looking for space, really.
02:39More bedrooms. We're currently in a two-bedroom unit
02:42and we have a toddler and Dan works from home.
02:44With an 18-month-old,
02:46you're in no rush to move again anytime soon.
02:48So we want to set something in place here
02:50which is a little bit future-proofed,
02:52which is going to give you some longevity
02:54and room to grow, yeah?
02:55Absolutely, yeah.
02:56House number one.
02:58We've got a huge block here.
03:00It's 855 square metres.
03:02So you've got a lot of room to move.
03:04It's four bedrooms.
03:05Yeah, great.
03:06Two bathrooms.
03:07This magnificent wisteria that's growing all the way along.
03:10In summer, this will be dripping with purple flowers.
03:13Wow.
03:14It will be magnificent.
03:15It looks grand compared to what we're in right now.
03:16Yeah, it's much bigger.
03:17Everything looks good compared to a two-bedroom unit, doesn't it?
03:20Yeah.
03:21Alright, you ready to head inside?
03:22Yeah, let's have a look.
03:23Come on in.
03:26Yeah, I see in the front of the house, like it's big.
03:29I'm not sure about the orange brick.
03:30It's a little ugly.
03:32Yeah, we could definitely paint that though, maybe, or render it.
03:34And the vine across the balustrade is really nice.
03:36That vine's pretty cool.
03:37Okay.
03:38So, as it sits, it's not the 60s on the outside.
03:51It's beautiful and fresh inside.
03:52It's quite big and spacious and the windows.
03:55There's so much natural light.
03:56It's huge.
03:57Gorgeous.
03:58I love these corner windows.
03:59Inside the house, it's definitely more refreshed than outside the house.
04:03I thought, I was sort of expecting, we might need to do a bit more work, a bit more renovating
04:07to it, but it has been updated.
04:09How good's our fireplace?
04:10Yeah.
04:11How good's, and I love the way that it's, yeah, double-sided.
04:13So you've got it here in the kitchen and then it does play through to the living room.
04:18But look, this is really a blank canvas.
04:20You guys can do whatever you want.
04:22The lights are a bit funny, but otherwise it's, yeah, I don't know, there's a bit to
04:25work on.
04:26Are you not into the sconces?
04:27No, I don't know.
04:28I love them.
04:29It looks like a clam or something.
04:31I love them.
04:32They're very wabi-sabi.
04:34What are they called?
04:35Yeah, they're very...
04:36Bespoke.
04:37Again, the kitchen, workable for you.
04:39Who's the cook in this couple?
04:40Me.
04:41So yeah, I can see there's induction cooktop and nice neff appliances, huge island bench,
04:46so definitely would make cooking nice and easy.
04:49A bit more storage as well than what we're used to.
04:51Yeah.
04:52I could see ourselves living here.
04:54It's definitely like the open sort of plan with the kitchen and living.
04:58You know, if Harvey was playing with toys or doing something in the lounge while I'm cooking
05:01dinner, I could always have eyes on him.
05:03The bedroom wing is just down the back.
05:05Yep.
05:06Head down there.
05:07I think the primary suite is pretty impressive.
05:09Ultimately, it comes down to where you guys are going to spend your time when you just
05:12need a little time out.
05:13Yes.
05:14That is important.
05:15Head down and have a look and I'll see you out the back.
05:22Wow.
05:23Oh wow, this is...
05:24Fish.
05:25Yeah.
05:26This is huge.
05:27I love these.
05:28Yeah, these windows are so nice.
05:30So much natural light.
05:31Yeah, it's beautiful.
05:32Yeah, the walk-in robe, like that's amazing.
05:35And I think that's a king bed.
05:37So yeah, it is a nice size.
05:39Good shower.
05:40Room for a bath on the side there.
05:42That's what you can probably do with that.
05:43Yeah, it is pretty big.
05:44I mean, they probably could have used this space better in there.
05:46Yeah, like over near the toilet, like that's just dead space.
05:49Like I don't know, there's so much cabinetry, but yeah, this bedroom one suite is almost
05:54bigger than our house.
05:55Yeah.
05:56It's massive.
06:07Wow.
06:08Doesn't stop, does it?
06:09Yeah.
06:10It's very big.
06:11That's a bit different.
06:13Yeah, not the prettiest, but very functional.
06:16Yes.
06:17The decking is exceptional.
06:19It's really, really big.
06:21Nice for entertaining.
06:22Yeah, and great for Harvey too, so he can still play outside even if it's wet because
06:25he does really enjoy being outside.
06:27So that's a really huge plus.
06:29This is on the market now.
06:30And what do you think the vendors are asking?
06:32I don't know.
06:33What do you think?
06:34It's a bit of work that's needed probably for us to get it up to how we'd like to live
06:38in it.
06:39So I'd be looking at 1.25 to 1.3.
06:41Yes, I think the land size will come into it compared to some of the other properties
06:45we've sort of looked at online is that this is such a big block.
06:48So yeah, probably around the 1.3, 1.35 mark, I would say.
06:52The vendors are looking around the 1.4.
06:55Okay.
06:56Okay.
06:57The asking price seems quite fair and reasonable to me, considering the land size where it's
07:01actually located in Frankston South.
07:03Four bedroom, two bathroom around 1.4 probably seems fair.
07:07Coming up.
07:10Oh, he's perked up a little bit now.
07:13I like it.
07:14I like it.
07:15It's, yeah, it's beautiful.
07:28It's like a beach in your front yard.
07:31Yeah, it is.
07:32It's big, lots of garden.
07:34Yeah.
07:35This is really cute though, the frontage.
07:36We're looking at a traditional Victorian beach shack here.
07:39Yeah.
07:40Built in the 50s.
07:41Wow.
07:42It's had a little bit of work done since, a couple of little renovations along the way,
07:45but very much in its original state, original condition.
07:49There is some work to be done.
07:50Yep.
07:51But you could absolutely make this your own.
07:53We're only 500 metres from the beach.
07:55Wow.
07:56Very, yeah, lots of character.
07:57I can see that from the outside.
07:58It's your beach shack, isn't it?
07:59Yeah.
08:00It looks old, but super cute.
08:01So looking forward to seeing what the inside looks like.
08:03Well, let's check it out.
08:04Let's check it out.
08:05The name of the home, Florieus.
08:06Florieus.
08:07Super sweet.
08:08Very French.
08:09This is the name of the home, Fleurieu.
08:15Fleurieu.
08:16Super sweet.
08:17Very French.
08:18You've got this little stable door here so you can have it shut for Harvey and Douglas
08:22and leave the top open for airflow.
08:24There's just a lot of character elements.
08:26Yeah, definitely.
08:27No, it's really sweet.
08:29I feel like this is the sort of house that you walk into and you go, ah, yes, or whoa,
08:34that's some work.
08:35Yes.
08:36Either way, I think it's super cute.
08:38You've got that relaxed vibe about it, for sure.
08:40That's exactly what I felt when I walked in.
08:42I was like, whoa, this is cute, a lot of work, but it feels like a holiday home.
08:47It's like one of those ones where you'd be happy to go away for the weekend and just relax
08:52and hang out, have a wine, a cheese board.
08:54Yeah, it's very, very aesthetically pleasing.
08:57It's gorgeous.
08:58Yeah, look, it's styled to perfection too.
09:00You can tell that the owner loves every minute of being here.
09:04You feel like you're close to the beach.
09:05You feel like you're in a beach cottage.
09:06Yeah.
09:07The walls.
09:08They're alright.
09:09There's a few cracks, but you can tell that it needs a little bit of love.
09:12Spot on, Dan.
09:13Are you the team to do it?
09:14We'll find out.
09:15Yes.
09:16Come into the kitchen.
09:17Oh, there's a sconce, Dan.
09:27Is that less offensive for you?
09:29It's a bit nicer than the one in the other house.
09:31That pantry's huge.
09:33Oh, he's perked up a little bit now.
09:35I like it.
09:36I like it.
09:37Yeah, it's beautiful.
09:38I love the character of it.
09:39I can see myself here in the morning having a pot of coffee.
09:42And yeah, it just feels holiday.
09:46Yeah.
09:47Yes.
09:48I'm a little worried.
09:49It feels much smaller than the previous house we've looked at though.
09:52It definitely feels like a weekender sort of feeling.
09:54That's what I'm getting, but I'm not sure about like every day, just with like the dishwasher
09:58sort of under the bench there, just practically how the layout is.
10:01But it definitely has a really nice feeling to it.
10:04That's for sure.
10:05Two bedrooms in the bathroom down that way.
10:06And then I'd love to show you the backyard.
10:08So I'll meet you out there.
10:09Okay.
10:10Let's check it out.
10:17How gorgeous are the windows?
10:18A bit smaller than the last one that we were in, but.
10:21Yeah.
10:22I love these like old original windows.
10:24They're beautiful.
10:25I wonder if it has en suite though.
10:28No en suite.
10:29Unless it's, oh no.
10:30That's just cupboards.
10:33Oh, some beautiful original paper.
10:35That's old school isn't it?
10:40Oh yeah.
10:41That's definitely smaller.
10:43It's tight.
10:44And probably need some updating slate floors.
10:47That shower looks iconic.
10:50Definitely a reno job.
10:51Yeah.
10:57It's not often that I'll bust out the camera and take photos.
10:59When I'm filming.
11:00But this house.
11:01It's done something to me.
11:02I don't know what.
11:03It's very special.
11:05And you can see it on my Instagram.
11:09It's very romantic.
11:10It is.
11:11It's the only word I can think for it.
11:12Yeah, it's a good word for it actually.
11:13It just feels so cosy and like you're in a rainforest somewhere.
11:14But you're close to the beach.
11:15Yeah.
11:16And your home office over here.
11:17Dan, this is all happening.
11:18Yeah, you're talking my language.
11:19Yeah.
11:20So I'd be out there.
11:21Man shed.
11:22Lock on the door.
11:23Away from the chaos outside.
11:24There's a toddler.
11:25Take a guess.
11:26Yes.
11:27What do you think Dan?
11:28Well it's big land and it's got proximity to the beach.
11:29So I'd say maybe 1.25 to 1.3.
11:30Okay.
11:31Yeah, I would have said round of 1.2 just with only the three bedrooms and one being in a
11:55window.
11:56Well the vendors are asking 1.1 to 1.2.
12:00Oh wow.
12:01Okay.
12:02So there is a lot left in your kitty to do the work that you might think needs to be done.
12:05To do the work.
12:06Yeah.
12:07To do the work.
12:08I was shocked.
12:09It was a little bit lower for the land size and the proximity to the beach.
12:13It made my ears prick up a little bit because the house does need work but if you're getting
12:17it at that price point you can probably tip one or two hundred thousand into it and then
12:22get it up to it being a family home and still retaining that character feel to it all.
12:31Coming up.
12:32Ah hello.
12:33Oh.
12:34Hello.
12:35Come on up.
12:36Come and join me.
12:37Didn't mean to scare you.
12:39Come on up.
12:40Come on up.
12:49So right down the end of the battle axe, it's elusive isn't it?
12:54It is.
12:55I can see a garage and that's about it at the moment.
12:57That's about it.
12:58Four bedrooms.
12:59Okay.
13:00Two bathrooms.
13:01Seventies build.
13:02I think, well I think you're going to be surprised.
13:05Okay.
13:06Let's have a look.
13:07Let's check it out.
13:08You ready Dan?
13:09Let's do it.
13:10House three.
13:18Get ready for a step back in time.
13:22Whoa.
13:25Walking in, it was absolutely incredible.
13:28How gorgeous are those lights.
13:30Blown away by how unique it was.
13:32Wallpaper.
13:33Things that I wouldn't normally consider that I would like.
13:38Wow.
13:39Wow.
13:40Everything old is new again.
13:41This is incredible.
13:42Those windows.
13:43So much to look at and comment on.
13:46I don't know where to start.
13:47The architecture, the interior design, everything is just perfect.
13:53It's your own Brady Bunch house.
13:55Character, character, character.
13:58Like walking in, it's just like, wow.
14:00That, that, that.
14:01Yeah.
14:02You're just pointing to everything.
14:03And the island bench, like you could actually have family dinner around that.
14:07Or, you know, set up Mexican night.
14:09You've just got so much room for everybody.
14:11I actually loved mid-century style.
14:12Like all the light fittings and the beautiful, like original range hood is incredible.
14:17I mean, neither of us would know how to take advantage of that piano.
14:20I think it'd probably go with the owners.
14:22Yeah.
14:23I don't think that gets to stay with the house.
14:25We're talking ceramic floor.
14:26You've got, yes, your copper range hood there.
14:28Are these beautiful handmade lights.
14:30This style continues throughout the whole home.
14:34Take a look downstairs.
14:35I'm going to check out this lawn.
14:37I know they have sectioned off the yard, which I think is really sensible.
14:40So I'll walk you around out there when you're done.
14:43How amazing is that ceiling?
14:50This is cool.
14:51And the windows.
14:52It's beautiful.
14:53Look at that light fitting in the roof.
14:55And another amazing light fitting.
14:57All the mixed materials work so well.
14:59I think their main bed's this way.
15:01Main bedroom's this way.
15:02Yeah.
15:03It's got the ceilings flat through in here.
15:06Oh, there's an ensuite.
15:08Still in its original condition.
15:10Even look at the light fitting in there.
15:12Nice.
15:13Good size.
15:14Feels like a little dark.
15:15That would be my only thing to say compared to having like obviously painted white walls,
15:19but still have this amazing window.
15:21The split level living does make me a little bit nervous just with a toddler.
15:25Particularly if we were to have another baby once they get on the move,
15:28you'd have to have eyes on them at all times,
15:30which probably might not work at this stage in our lives.
15:33That is one hesitation I do have about the house.
15:40Ah, hello.
15:41Oh.
15:42Hello.
15:43Hi.
15:44Come on up.
15:45Come and join me.
15:46Didn't mean to scare you.
15:48Hiding up here.
15:49There's always something else.
15:51This house kind of unfolds.
15:53What a great space to sit and watch the kids run amok.
15:56Isn't it?
15:57And the block goes all the way to the street.
15:59Wow.
16:00So it's almost a quarter of an acre in the middle of Frankston South.
16:02And what you could do with this space,
16:03obviously it's wonderful to have this flat yard area for the kids.
16:06You could put in a pool, obviously,
16:08because the house is set to the back of the block.
16:10Got everything.
16:11Parents up here, kids running amok down there.
16:13Yes.
16:14Yeah, it's got a lot of potential for what you can do with your fam.
16:17Absolutely.
16:18And it's a really workable flat block too.
16:20Like some of the properties in Frankston South are quite steep.
16:23So this is amazing to have a block this size.
16:25It's reasonably flat still too.
16:27Let's take a crack at the price.
16:29I would say probably 1.5.
16:32Yeah.
16:33Would be my guess.
16:341.6 unfortunately.
16:36Look, this is the top end.
16:38They're looking around the twos.
16:41Yes.
16:42Yes.
16:43But it's somewhere that you wouldn't have to move again
16:45for a very long time.
16:46This would be the forever, forever home.
16:48The forever, forevers.
16:49Yes.
16:50Look, it's probably a little bit more expensive
16:51than what we were originally looking at in terms of the asking price.
16:54Not completely out of the question,
16:55but it probably would stretch us just that little bit further.
16:58Yeah, looking forward to going away, having a wine
17:00and having a discussion about, you know,
17:02where do we put in an offer and which one do we try and secure?
17:07Coming up.
17:08Shall we find out which one it was?
17:10We have made a decision.
17:19Many of us visit Frankston's beautiful beaches during the summer,
17:22but I wanted to chat with a local
17:24about what it's like to live here year round.
17:26Well, Brendan, haven't you got yourself a cosy little corner
17:30of the world here in Frankston?
17:32We do, Shelley.
17:33It's fantastic.
17:34So what is life like for you and your family here now?
17:36Obviously a lot of hard work keeping this place looking so great
17:39and, of course, catering for all the amazing locals
17:41that you've got supporting you.
17:42But do you get any time off and what do you do with it?
17:44I do, yeah.
17:45And what do I do with it?
17:46Rest, I guess.
17:47Try to keep fit.
17:48And both the kids work here as well, so that's handy.
17:51Yeah, we just enjoy it.
17:52Enjoy the place.
17:53What about the bay itself?
17:54Do you get out there much?
17:55I do get out there.
17:56I do enjoy the water.
17:57I do, for the most part, I look at the water.
17:59Once that view's framed by the windows,
18:01it just takes on a whole different feel.
18:02Great to hear you've got your kids working here with you.
18:05I'm, at the moment, house hunting for a young family.
18:08They're just moving down the bay towards Frankston.
18:11What would you say they can look forward to in their future life here?
18:14Oh, your house takes on a bit of a dual personality.
18:18It becomes a bit of a holiday house as well.
18:19But most people, they have to wait until they had a weekend or a holiday to go to the beach.
18:23We can do it every night in about five minutes, so it's great.
18:26Have you seen people now stop?
18:28Like, Frankston's become the destination.
18:29It used to be sort of the blow-through on the way down to Mornington,
18:32and now you've got so much going on here.
18:34Why don't they spend a day?
18:35We're actually getting residents from Mount Eliza and Mornington
18:38up towards Mordialic.
18:40And, yeah, just because of the location, it is a little bit unique.
18:44To sit so close to the water, particularly around this part of the bay,
18:47it's quite rare.
18:48So that's why we are getting quite a few people coming from out of town a bit.
18:52And, obviously, Eastlink leads to Frankston.
18:54The redevelopment of Frankston Station.
18:56All roads lead to Frankston.
18:58All roads lead to Frankston.
18:59They do.
19:00Best thing on Oliver's Corner's menu?
19:02The egg and bacon roll's pretty good.
19:03Yeah.
19:04Can't beat it, can you?
19:05No.
19:06And a few good beers, too.
19:10Now that Dan and Shay have had a chance to consult with each other
19:13about the three homes we explored together,
19:15I'm keen to reconvene and see where things are at.
19:18Harvey, it's great to finally meet you.
19:21So did Mum and Dad tell you all about the houses that we checked out?
19:24There was a bit like a Goldilocks sort of story, wasn't there?
19:27There was one that might have been too big,
19:29one that might have been too small,
19:31and one that was just right.
19:33Hmm?
19:34Shall we find out which one it was?
19:36We have made a decision.
19:37Have you?
19:38Well, don't tell me just yet.
19:39Okay.
19:40Let's talk through the houses first.
19:41Ready?
19:42Drum roll.
19:43Let's talk about house number one.
19:44Let's go.
19:45Okay.
19:46House number one.
19:47What did you think?
19:48I think house number one ticked pretty much most of the boxes
19:51in terms of space, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, big backyard for Harvey to play,
19:55potential for a pool and within the budget.
19:58So it was very different obviously from apartment living that you have been in
20:01and I can imagine, yes, it's getting small fast.
20:03Yes.
20:04Yes.
20:05House number two, there was some work to be done but I could see Dan slowly falling
20:10in love.
20:11It had so much character and it was like before him, it was something that you could see yourself
20:15living in but then it probably just wasn't big enough at the end of the day and too much
20:20of a project to...
20:21Right.
20:22Okay.
20:23So we're ruling that one out straight away.
20:24Yeah.
20:25Too small.
20:26Well, let's talk about house number three.
20:27Once we were there, you could see the family growing and you could still do some work to it
20:31if you wished but it had such wonderful character.
20:33House number three was incredible.
20:36We loved just the...
20:38The character.
20:39...the uniqueness of it, the character.
20:40The only thing about it is it's probably a bit too expensive for us,
20:43probably just a little bit outside of our budget.
20:45So we did get it right straight off the bat.
20:48Yeah.
20:49It was number one.
20:54Yeah, we could just move into it straight away.
20:56It didn't require any work because renovating with a toddler, it doesn't seem like an idea
21:00Yeah.
21:01It's not a good idea.
21:02No.
21:03This is great news.
21:04We're off.
21:05Time for the big shift.
21:06Congratulations.
21:07And thank you.
21:08Thanks, Shelley.
21:09It was my absolute pleasure.
21:10I loved it.
21:11Yay!
21:12We're freezing out!
21:14Woohoo!
21:17Dan and Shay, congratulations and all the best as you set out to create your perfect family
21:23home by the sea.
21:31...
21:36...
21:42...
21:49...
