00:00Welcome to Ireland's fittest family. Over eight grueling weeks our families will go
00:08head-to-head in a series of events designed to push them to their limits.
00:13From the tough terrain of an army training camp, through the sticky swamps of hell and back,
00:19and the deep icy waters of Drada Port. It will all come down to these ramps in our grand final
00:25in spectacular Avondale in County Wicklow, where one family will rise to the top
00:30and grab that 15,000 euro cash prize and the title of Ireland's fittest family 2025.
00:47Welcome to Ireland's fittest family. We're back at our base camp in Gormanstown, County Mead,
00:52and it's the second of our heats in this year's competition.
00:57Last week, OG coach and three-time winner Anna Geary and newbie coach Michael Dara McCauley
01:03kicked off this year's competition as they went head-to-head in our first heat.
01:08After three nail-biting events and some intense rivalry, it was Michael Dara who got his two families through,
01:15leaving Anna with just one family left in the competition.
01:19Michael Dara, what a way to kick it off. Two families through to the quarter-finals.
01:22Two for two, absolutely buzzing.
01:24This week, it's the turn of former Ireland teammates and Munster Ulster rivals
01:28Doneco O'Callaghan and Andrew Trimble.
01:31In our final heat next week, it's fittest family veteran Davy Fitzgerald
01:35versus Paralympic swimming champion Ellen Keane.
01:38Andrew has 70 caps for Ireland. I've 94, you know.
01:46We've Andrew Trimble in as well this year. Like, what an athlete, what a rugby player. Incredible.
01:51Ultimately, whenever you get out there in the heat of the battle, I know I'm going to get fired up, excited and flustered.
01:56Doneco O'Callaghan is a massive character in Ireland for the family. You know, he's a real funny guy.
02:00Andrew coming in now though might challenge him with that title because he's also a funny guy. He loves to mess.
02:05My only experience of coaching, I suppose, is coaching my 10-year-old and his mini rugby team.
02:10And my coaching style with that would be generally to be ignored.
02:14Each coach has two families in tonight's competition.
02:18Doneco's families are the Linehans from Cork and the Hickeys from Dublin.
02:22Andrew's families are the Hilliards from Kildare and the McKenna's from Monaghan.
02:27Donners! Andrew Trimble!
02:34Hi! You're very welcome along.
02:36Yeah, great to be here.
02:37So you guys obviously go way back. You used to be teammates.
02:39Best friends.
02:40You're going to show Andrew the ropes.
02:41Yeah, I know you're trying to build this up as like enemies and we are when we played against each other, but we're kind of frenemies.
02:48Frenemies are worse than enemies, Donners.
02:50I didn't know that.
02:51Don't let her get in your head. That's not true.
02:52It is your first time on Ireland's Footless Family. How are you feeling?
02:55I'm good. I'm good. Nice to meet the families.
02:57I got this look from the McKenna's. They're from Monaghan.
02:59And I got this look that I recognise I've seen before.
03:01And it's a look that says, why can't you be Tommy Boat?
03:09Tonight, all families will compete in two events, Box to the Top and in bits.
03:14Box to the Top will have two heats, both with one family from each coach going head to head.
03:19The losing families will be given a 20 second time penalty for the second event.
03:23The two families with the best times in in bits will go straight through to the quarter-finals.
03:28The slowest families will battle it out in our army eliminator for their remaining place in the quarter-finals.
03:36First up, it's Andrew's family, the McKenna's from County Monaghan.
03:40We entered Ireland's Footless Family because we think we have a chance in winning.
03:44The secret weapon would definitely be Colleen. She's late, she's fast. She'd be nimble.
03:48If he were looking for me, he'd never find me in the house. No, it's the last place he'd go looking for me.
03:53I'd much prefer to be outside, let it be on my bicycle, out hiking a mountain, out for a walk, a run.
03:58Caelan, he'd be very into the sheep and the farming side of it.
04:02He had a young age, he took a sheep farming and he played football.
04:06And same as all of us, handball and rugby.
04:09Cormac's a very, very relaxed person. It's very, very hard to get a raise out of Cormac, but Cormac just goes with the flow.
04:15He'll not steal the attention or anything. He'll just, whatever's happening, he'll float with it.
04:20I think we can definitely win Ireland's Footless Family. That's why we've entered.
04:24Next up, it's Jonica's Linehans from County Cork.
04:27We're a fairly competitive family when it comes to all games out in the garden, board games inside.
04:33We always like beating each other. Dad's a big golfer. He's golfing all of his life.
04:37He'd be fairly fit too. He goes for his runs there a couple times a week.
04:40Goes to the gym as well, he'd be fairly active. For touching up on 60, he's not doing too bad.
04:45Rory is generally an all-rounder. He's very good at everything. He has an older brother who he's always trying to out-achieve.
04:54There's great rivalry between them. So whatever Sean does, Rory will try and do better.
05:00Ava's probably the fittest. She does a lot of long running and cardio, so hopefully that could come in handy.
05:06She's very good at the plank stuff like that, balance and flexibility. If there's anything to do with that, she'll be very strong.
05:12Sean's very strong. He likes going to the gym and he started MMA recently.
05:17Sean would definitely be the strongest, but in terms of speed, I'd say Rory would be up there.
05:22We've been training really hard. We've been trying to do as much running as we can and going to the gym and even swimming just in case anything comes our way.
05:33Sandbags, sweat and seriously steep hills. Oh, and a box. Welcome to Box to the Top.
05:39Tonight, members of the Irish Defence Forces will demonstrate this test of strength, strategy and stamina.
05:46One person from each family starts the race standing on an army kit box in the sea.
05:51On the sound of the horn, they must jump off the box, pick it up and run with it to their remaining family members.
05:57With the family are four 15kg sandbags. Between them, they must carry the sandbags and the box through the rest of the course.
06:05Next, it's a 200m run broken up by crawl through two army camo nets. Once through them, it's a run up a hill and onto a platform.
06:12The sandbags have to be placed inside the box and the lid closed. When all the family members are on the platform, they go down a ladder and up a wall.
06:20Finally, it's a run up a steep bank. When all four family members are standing at the top of the bank, they win the race.
06:26The losing family will carry a 20 second time penalty into the next event.
06:30We have a strategy in place. We're going to stick all the sandbags in the box, give it to Caelan and Cormac and let them run.
06:45And then let the girls get ahead and create a bit of a tunnel in the net.
06:49It's going to be Cormac standing out in the box to start the event. He'd be probably a bit faster than me.
06:54We were up against a good family there. It looked tough, so try our best.
06:5820 seconds actually might not be that big a deal. You said that to Josme.
07:04Nerves aren't too bad at the minute, but at the start of the race, I'd say they'll be going.
07:08Ninety.
07:09I'm a bit nervous about the first race. I think the cargo nets are going to be harder than people think.
07:14The teams we up against do seem very good, but at the same time we're very confident in ourselves,
07:19so hopefully we can win the first event anyway.
07:21I think it's about speed and agility, really. So I would say probably Ava.
07:26She would be the fastest and I think she'd fly through those nets.
07:30Might have been a bit of trouble here, but anyway.
07:34Starting in red, it's Cormac McKenna and in yellow, Sean Linehan.
07:38We are ready to go for our first race of the day on Gormanston Beach.
07:41Three, two, one.
07:45Box to the top begins. Paul O'Donovan gets our competitors underway.
07:50Two 19-year-olds here starting this race. And they are right beside each other.
07:57And the terrain gets a little bit trickier from here. That box is tricky to handle.
08:03So Cormac McKenna in red is up to the rest of his family.
08:07And the McKennas from Monaghan have opened up a little bit of a lead.
08:10The first of these 100-meter sprints.
08:12It's a lovely day in County Mean.
08:16So this is Colleen McKenna out in front for her family.
08:19And Ava Linehan is pushing hard too.
08:22What is interesting is the McKennas have put the sandbags into the box.
08:26The Linehans are carrying them.
08:28So this is the camo net crawl.
08:31So Ava Linehan through that already and she's gone.
08:36There's a little bit of assistance for the McKennas now.
08:38There's two of those nets as you can see.
08:40And the lads have got to get the box through with them.
08:43This is not easy at all.
08:45So there's good teamwork from the McKenna family in red.
08:48And here's the rest of the sandbags for the Linehans.
08:52That army kit box is empty for the Linehan family.
08:56What are you doing Sean? Sean get out!
08:59As always, the role of the coaches here is very important.
09:02Calm, clear instructions.
09:04So the McKennas have opened up a nice lead, haven't they?
09:10So Andrew keeping them calm.
09:13That's a bit confused from the Linehans.
09:15The sandbags are an issue.
09:17And the strategy isn't working, carrying those bags.
09:20The McKennas have seen the difference.
09:22They've put the bags inside that box.
09:24And they have a big lead.
09:26But the Linehans are closing or trying to.
09:29We're okay.
09:30Well done.
09:31So the McKennas trying to get up to the top of this wall.
09:35And then there's a steep bank in front of them.
09:37They are in pole position here.
09:39They've been very fast.
09:40And they've made this look straightforward.
09:41And it certainly isn't.
09:42What about the performance of mum Sharon McKenna?
09:45She's first up to the top.
09:46Very, very impressive performance.
09:49And it's a victory for the McKennas.
09:51They win.
09:52The Linehan family from Cork didn't get that right at all.
09:54They'll carry a 20-second time penalty into the next event.
09:57Go on.
09:58It was just a great close.
09:59It was very exciting.
10:00It was fun.
10:01There are wee powerhouses of three of them.
10:02So they are.
10:03We stuck to the plan and it ended up working for us very well.
10:06Bring on the time press.
10:07Feeling good, yeah.
10:08Well, Andrew, congratulations.
10:10You guys won the first race.
10:12It has to feel good.
10:13I'm feeling great at the minute.
10:14I think we're probably feeling a little bit bulletproof.
10:16The two lads got off and just so strong on the carry.
10:20And then the two girls with, like, the technically getting the net up.
10:23A lot of things fell into place.
10:24So they did brilliantly.
10:26Jonica, as you well know, this is only round one.
10:30Yeah.
10:31And a lot can change.
10:32Of course.
10:33But I think they got it so right.
10:35To be fair, it was a brilliant performance.
10:36Credit where credit is due.
10:38At the end of the day, they were just a better family.
10:40It was all over really quick.
10:41I think I was expecting a longer race.
10:43And then all of a sudden, we heard their falcon.
10:45There is a 20-second time penalty going into the next defense.
10:47You do have to work a lot harder.
10:49How are you feeling about that?
10:50That 20-second penalty.
10:51Yeah, 20 seconds.
10:53Probably a long way to come back from.
10:55He's smugless.
10:56It's frightening.
10:57Honestly, stranger things have happened on Fitna's family.
10:59Sorry for being so cocky.
11:01Yeah, look, you know, it could be the other way next time around.
11:04So watch out, Andrew.
11:05We're coming to get you.
11:06The next race is about to start.
11:08Now, can Andrew get another family over the line first?
11:12Or will Donica make a spectacular second half comeback?
11:16Andrew's second family are the Hillyards from County Kildare.
11:20My dad decided to apply for the show.
11:22He's been talking about it for years.
11:24As long as I've been watching the show, I dream to be actually taking part.
11:27Ellen is, I'd say she's, like, the strongest of us all now, but I think that she would never, like, say that herself.
11:33Just seeing how she kind of pushes herself is, for me, like, super inspirational.
11:38The big reason as to why myself and the girls are willing to take part in the show is because of the influence that my mom and dad have had on us both.
11:45In particular, my dad, because he's always been active.
11:49Me, Alana and Julia are all part of the same gym, and we go a couple times a week.
11:54We're all kind of along the same kind of strength levels then as well.
11:57I think we will work really well together as a team.
12:00I mean, we're used to training together in the gym, and certain competitions will take part there.
12:04We're often paired up together, so I do think that that will definitely, like, help within the competition itself.
12:08I think people might underestimate that team, you know, and they might think, oh, it's just all girls.
12:14Well, I think we might surprise a few people.
12:16We won't fear anybody.
12:17We'll be giving them everything we can.
12:19Dunica's next family are the Hickeys from County Dublin.
12:22To be honest, I couldn't believe it, but really excited to give it a go, and it's really nice to do something together as a family, like.
12:28Conor, without a doubt, definitely he'll be our secret weapon.
12:30He's got youth on his side.
12:32He's also extremely competitive as well, very fast.
12:35Our biggest strength is, like, our fitness.
12:37We're all, like, able to, like, keep up with each other and help each other, so.
12:40Cindy will be the team leader.
12:42She's super competitive, a good leader, and is a strong runner.
12:46We all do park run.
12:47Jodie kind of shows up, says he does no training, and absolutely hair off with these amazing times.
12:52But it's very competitive.
12:54Ruby is my younger sister.
12:56We go to the gym together.
12:58We run together.
12:59It'll be amazing to win something together as a family.
13:01Got to believe to achieve, and definitely think we all have the determination to win.
13:05So, yeah.
13:06Go Hickeys!
13:07Woo-hoo!
13:08Yay!
13:14The Leards are going to be great.
13:15Good group.
13:16Really connected with the families.
13:17I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do out there.
13:19To have Andrew as a coach is just incredible for us as a family.
13:23We've talked tactics there, so we have a plan, so.
13:25The Nets particularly, I think, will be a challenge with the box and all the gear with it.
13:30Ready for box to the top in gold.
13:33It's Mel Hilliard.
13:34And in white, Jodie Hickey.
13:35Three, two, one.
13:38It's an all-Leinster battle between Dublin and Kildare.
13:42The Hickey's from Dublin.
13:43The Hilliard's from Kildare.
13:44And there's an early lead for Jodie Hickey.
13:47Oh, he's gone off very, very quickly.
13:49That's an impressive start on putting pressure on Mel Hilliard already.
13:53Well done, well done, well done.
13:55Three, four.
13:56So, the box is awkward.
13:57It's not particularly heavy.
13:59So, Connor in white for the Hickey family has gone off very quickly on that sprint.
14:03He's not bothering with the sandbags.
14:05Each of them weigh 15 kilograms.
14:07Here come the Hilliards, so they're all together.
14:10And they're off and running.
14:13So, Connor for the Hickey family is up to the camo net.
14:19And there's a nice steady pace for Mel and Alana Hilliard carrying that box.
14:24So, Connor is still pushing forward.
14:29But here come the Hilliards.
14:33Not too far behind under the watchful eye of Andrew Trimble.
14:37It's really difficult to move the bags and that box underneath the nets.
14:45And they're sort of stuck at the moment, aren't they?
14:49And, well, the Hickey family lost a little bit of time there.
14:53But now they're free of the first cargo net and up to the second one.
14:59So, Connor has gone back to help the rest of his family.
15:01And here come the Hilliards.
15:05This is tight. They're all bunched up together.
15:11And Connor has decided to carry those two bags himself.
15:15He's enjoyed this. It's not over yet, though.
15:19Go, go, go, go.
15:21Still plenty to do in box to the top.
15:23So, Connor gets to the top of that platform first.
15:27Dumps the two sandbags.
15:29And he's gone back to help the rest of his family.
15:31The Hilliards, though, they're bunched up.
15:33Will that be an advantage for them?
15:35They have to put those sandbags inside the kit box and close the lid.
15:41And then they can move away from here and down the ladder.
15:43And that's done.
15:45This is very tight, isn't it?
15:47A marginal lead for the Hilliard family.
15:51The ladder is tricky to get down.
15:53The Hickey family have closed up on them, haven't they?
15:55And they are neck and neck. They're right beside each other.
15:57Who's got the strength at the end of a grueling event to get to the top of that very steep hill?
16:04The wall is not straightforward. Teamwork absolutely important.
16:08The Hickey family, there's two going up towards the top of that here.
16:12But the Hilliards are all together, all four of them.
16:14Who's it going to be?
16:16This is really, really tight between these two families and it's the Hilliards who get up there.
16:20All four of them there. They win.
16:22The Hickey family now have a 20-second time penalty into the next event.
16:29Oh, it's all going so well for you.
16:31It is I.
16:32Yeah, yeah.
16:36Hilliards, we need to say congratulations to you.
16:38Well done. That was a phenomenal race.
16:40How are you guys feeling going in now?
16:42I think we're feeling pretty good.
16:44Yeah, we got a bit of a spring in our staff.
16:46It's a huge advantage. Can't lie about that.
16:48I think it's a bit of a confidence booster too.
16:51I think we can all agree that the superstar of that race was without a doubt, Conor.
16:56You were phenomenal.
16:58Very proud of him. He did super.
17:00He was kind of the most composed of us.
17:02It was panic and run, panic and run for the rest of us.
17:06But he was very calm and composed.
17:08Conor was absolutely brilliant. He took off like a hair at the beginning and then still came back, got the two bags and was able to get up the hill.
17:14So, yeah, massively proud of Conor. He's done great so far.
17:16Donica, we're on a 20 second time penalty going into the next event.
17:21But I feel like there is a fire in the belly of the hickeys here now.
17:24Yeah, absolutely. I think you've nailed it.
17:26Of course, it's disappointing, but I think we made an awful lot of mistakes.
17:29So we kind of look at our own performance.
17:30The 20 seconds is going to make us like definitely fight harder for the next event.
17:34We kind of need to just forget about this morning and think about the next event.
17:38Very best of luck later on. I'll see you then. All right?
17:40Sure. Nice one.
17:46Get up! Get up!
17:49Ah, lucky!
18:05Oh, yes. That's right.
18:06Johnners! Hi, Laura. How are you? Welcome to the beach.
18:08Oh, it's so good to see you.
18:10Talk to me about this beautiful creation that you've got.
18:12Yeah, I've been at it now for about four hours.
18:14So I just wanted to take up something new, a new hobby.
18:17I get it.
18:18But it's quite time consuming, but it's all worth it when you see.
18:21Look at that!
18:22Oh!
18:23That's so cool.
18:24I'd say there's about 30 years in this now, really and truly.
18:26Absolutely.
18:27Trimble just arrived.
18:28Oh, wow!
18:29Oh!
18:30Hi, Andrew.
18:31I'll just be with you in a minute.
18:34Oh, my God, yes. I totally get it.
18:36Um, did you just whip this up?
18:38Ah, five minutes.
18:39Five minutes.
18:40Yeah, just threw it together.
18:41I wanted to create the sand manifestation of Donika's rugby career.
18:46Okay.
18:47Missing tackles.
18:48And my rugby career, line breaks in general, X Factor.
18:52Oh, wow.
18:53Just, I mean, in between everything that we've got going on today.
18:56Um, yeah.
19:02Do you think I hurt his feelings?
19:03No.
19:04I mean, he did a great job, too.
19:06Yeah.
19:07Just different.
19:08Oh, wow.
19:09Oh, wow.
19:10Oh, wow.
19:11Oh, wow.
19:12Oh, wow.
19:13Oh, wow.
19:14Oh, wow.
19:15Oh, wow.
19:16Oh, wow.
19:17Oh, wow.
19:18Oh, wow.
19:19Oh, wow.
19:20Oh, wow.
19:21Welcome back to Ireland's Fittest Family.
19:22Now, before the break, the McKennas and the Hilliards both managed to get the box to the top first,
19:27which means going into this next event, the Hickeys and the Linehans both have a time penalty.
19:32But as we know on this show, anything can happen.
19:36I always thought the families who did jigsaws together were a little bit weird, but this is actually great crack.
19:41Everyone has to complete a leg of the challenge, grab a piece of the jigsaw and then put it back together,
19:46because right now it's in bits.
19:48Just like our families are going to be at the end of this.
19:50This is in bits.
19:52In bits is a brand new event where strategy is key.
19:57Each person must complete a different task in this square of the army camp's training trenches
20:03before pulling a piece of a Fittest Family jigsaw puzzle to the centre.
20:07First, we have a crawl under two camo nets.
20:09The next leg involves jumping over four straw bales.
20:13Then, it's a lung-busting run to collect sandbags from two barrels.
20:18And the final person has to drag a tire down the length of the trench.
20:22The clock stops when all four family members are standing on their piece of the completed puzzle.
20:29This event will definitely have everyone in bits.
20:32First up for this new time trial are Dunnika and the Hickeys.
20:36They lost their first event, so they go into this with a 20-second time penalty.
20:41Dunners, Hickeys, here we go.
20:45We're not messing around now, are we?
20:47No, we're not. We messed around too much this morning.
20:50Now we're going to try to put that all right.
20:52This is a good course to make the 20 seconds back.
20:55It's four legs, essentially. Five seconds a person.
20:58I think it's well possible to pick up five seconds each.
21:00We're feeling good. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:02We're good, we're a bit nervous, but that's not a bad thing, Laura.
21:04You need the nerves, he's firing the value.
21:06You do, you do.
21:07Trimble's here three minutes, and he's giving it all that.
21:09You know what I mean?
21:10I cannot have two families in the Eliminator.
21:13Me competing against myself will be a nightmare.
21:16I need to drag him into a fight.
21:18In fact, I'm going for him.
21:21On the start line for the Hickey family from Dublin are Ruby, Jodie, Conor and Cindy.
21:28Conor, same again, boy. You're brilliant, yeah?
21:31Three, two, one.
21:35So first to go for the Hickey family, it's Cindy running the first leg and taking on the responsibility of that.
21:43And Cindy has to deal with two camo nets, which are down inside that trench.
21:49Go, get out, get out, get out.
21:51You need a bit more.
21:52Remember, they are carrying a 20-second time penalty from the first event.
21:56The exact same way. Attack it, attack it.
21:58So we'll see can they make that up over the course of in bits.
22:02Go, go, go.
22:03So Cindy has been quick enough through there, powerful running style.
22:07She's got out of the trench and has to grab the piece of the jigsaw puzzle and drag it back down the course.
22:14Ruby's waiting, Ruby's waiting.
22:16Zonica certainly looks lively, doesn't he?
22:17Remember, rope to the corner, take it off or to the corner, go.
22:20So the piece of the puzzle has to be placed in the frame.
22:24And then Ruby is tagged in.
22:27The corner will be away, away.
22:29And off Ruby goes down into the trench.
22:33And this is the sandbag carry.
22:36So you'll see she has to get out of the trench, grab the sandbag.
22:40Off the top of the barrel.
22:42Get in. Well done.
22:44Jump back down again.
22:45Throw it down and get in.
22:46Throw it down and get in.
22:47Flings the bag in.
22:48Oh, Ruby.
22:49Come on, Ruby.
22:50And she's back moving again.
22:51Open out.
22:52One more sandbag to collect.
22:53Yeah, well done.
22:54Well done.
22:55Brilliant.
22:56That's done.
22:57Round the barrel.
22:5830 seconds of work.
22:5930 seconds of work.
23:00And into the trench.
23:01Get them up.
23:02Get them up.
23:03They're 15 kilograms each, those sandbags.
23:04Get out.
23:05Get out.
23:06Get out.
23:07Just come out.
23:08Ruby has placed those on the barrel.
23:09And she's out of the trench.
23:11And here's the second piece of the puzzle.
23:14Push.
23:15Push.
23:16And Ruby is back to the rest of her family.
23:18Roll to the edge.
23:19Roll to the edge.
23:20Roll to the edge.
23:21Now I'm going to tag him.
23:22Get on and go.
23:23Here we go.
23:24And Connor has to jump over four straw bales which are in the trench.
23:31I think those bales may well be taller than Connor.
23:35But he's got past the first one.
23:37And now the second.
23:38It's a good technique from him.
23:40So good.
23:41This is quick.
23:43That's your best of me.
23:44You're getting stronger.
23:45Nicely done.
23:46Well done, Connor.
23:47And he's up to the fourth one.
23:48Past the fourth one.
23:49Back up all your brilliant work.
23:50Out of the trench.
23:51Out of the trench.
23:52And that's the third piece of the puzzle.
23:54Grab that and go.
23:55You're doing brilliant, boy.
23:56Go on.
23:57Big pull.
23:58Big pull.
23:59Well done.
24:00He's pushing hard now.
24:01To get back to the rest of his family.
24:02They're just one to go.
24:03The Hickey family from Dublin.
24:05Didn't have a particularly long journey to get down to Gormonstilling County Meath.
24:10This is Jody.
24:11And Jody, when he gets into the trench, will have to drag this tire.
24:14It's not particularly heavy.
24:15Good boy.
24:16It's not heavy at all.
24:17It's just awkward.
24:18And it's slowing him down a bit.
24:19But he's really pushing those legs.
24:20Getting down towards the end of the trench.
24:21As you can see, the rope wrapped around his chest.
24:22Out he goes.
24:23And this is the final piece of the puzzle.
24:24The Hickey family will set the time for the rest to try and beat.
24:25But remember, whatever they finish on, we're going to add 20 seconds onto it.
24:27Under the watchful eye of Dunneke.
24:28Jody is back to the rest of his family.
24:29Every second counts.
24:30And that's piece slotted in.
24:31They're all standing on top of the jigsaw.
24:32The clock stops at 5.09.
24:33But with the 20-second time penalty, it's 5.29.
24:34We'll see how he goes.
24:35He goes towards the end of the trench.
24:36He goes towards the end of the trench.
24:37As you can see, the rope wrapped around his chest.
24:38As you can see, the rope wrapped around his chest.
24:39Out he goes.
24:40And this is the final piece of the puzzle.
24:41The Hickey family will set the time for the rest to try and beat.
24:42But remember, whatever they finish on, we're going to add 20 seconds onto it.
24:45Under the watchful eye of Dunneke.
24:46He goes towards the rest of his family.
24:47Every second counts.
24:49And that's piece slotted in.
24:50They're all standing on top of the jigsaw.
24:52The clock stops at 5.09.
24:54But with the 20-second time penalty, it's 5.29.
24:56We'll see how good that is.
25:00Kate Champ.
25:01Brilliant.
25:02It was definitely a better performance than this morning,
25:04in that we didn't get stuck in any of our bits and pieces.
25:08We were all very proud of what we did.
25:10I think we all gave it our all.
25:12Jigsaw pieces are not light.
25:14Not after you've ran, you've jumped, you've carried sandbags,
25:17to drag a jigsaw piece along.
25:18It's definitely not easy.
25:20Overall, I don't think we could have given it any more.
25:23My concern is that the time will cost us,
25:25and that the error from the first event will cost us deeply.
25:30Next up for InBits are Andrew and the McKennas.
25:33Can they repeat their blistering first-round performance?
25:36Time to find out.
25:38The calm before the storm.
25:39Smiles on faces.
25:41Remember, we got 20 seconds buffer.
25:43So we don't need to go 100 miles an hour.
25:46If we go as hard as we can here, and do our best,
25:48and leave all out the field now,
25:49we're planning not to have to be eliminated.
25:51I think Andrew deserves to be a wee bit smug, you know,
25:54because, obviously, both his teams did well this morning.
25:58You know, seeing Danica soul-searching on his phone to his mum,
26:02or his wife, you know, do you still love me?
26:04That would be perfect.
26:05That would be a real success for me today.
26:07Lining up for the McKennas, we have Cormac, Kaylon, Colleen, and Sharon.
26:16Three, two, one.
26:20Seconds to go in bits are the McKennas from Monaghan for Andrew Trimble.
26:25And first up, it's mum Sharon, a High Rock specialist.
26:28She was very impressive in the first event this morning.
26:31She's got the camo nets to start.
26:33I think that one arm right ahead, just trying to clear that space.
26:35Nice, well done.
26:36Watch your head, yeah.
26:37Nice and calm instruction from Andrew.
26:40Well done, Sharon, great stuff.
26:42Sharon was in blistering form this morning.
26:46Good job.
26:47In event one.
26:49And it's a good, solid start for the McKenna family.
26:535.29 is the time they have to beat.
26:56And they're just through a minute on the first leg of this in bits relay challenge.
27:03So the first piece of the puzzle is back.
27:07And Sharon tags her daughter, Colleen.
27:10And her task will be to carry these sandbags.
27:15Collect them off the barrels, carry them from one end of the trench to the other.
27:20Big into boxing and the G8.
27:23Very strong competitor.
27:24And there's sandbag number one for Colleen McKenna.
27:29Same again.
27:32For the next one.
27:33She can see where the second sandbag is.
27:35Well done, Colleen.
27:36There it is.
27:37Let's go.
27:38And it's been collected around the barrel.
27:39And then it's a sprint with both of them down to the bottom of the trench.
27:43This feels quick.
27:46There's the second piece of the jigsaw.
27:48Let's go hard, Colleen.
27:49Let's go all the way home.
27:50Colleen McKenna drives the legs.
27:53Back down to the rest of her family.
27:56Two and a half minutes done.
27:575.29 is what they've got to try and better.
28:00Put it around the right way.
28:02That's done.
28:03Third in is 19-year-old Cormac.
28:06And he is sprinting to that trench.
28:09He's got to jump over these bales.
28:11And look at that.
28:13Brilliant technique.
28:14Brilliant, lad.
28:15That was a brilliant bit of skill and technique from Cormac McKenna.
28:19And if anything, he's getting faster.
28:21Jumping over those as if they're not there.
28:23All right, let's go hard.
28:24That was brilliant from Cormac McKenna.
28:27Piece number three.
28:28And there's no let-up in the pace at all.
28:30Go hard.
28:31Go hard all the way.
28:32This is quick and he is going hard.
28:33So, Kaylon McKenna will finish this out.
28:38Three and a half minutes.
28:39Oh, there's a little bit of a mistake there.
28:41That's cost him a second or two, but not fatal.
28:44The tire pull.
28:45And Kaylon's quick as well.
28:46He's 21.
28:47Watch this, Kaylon.
28:48Let's go.
28:49And they have smashed this from the first leg with Sharon McKenna.
28:53This felt fast.
28:55We got an exact time very shortly.
28:58Kaylon out of the trench.
29:01The final piece of the puzzle has been dragged along the ground.
29:06And this, I've laid down a marker.
29:09This is a really quick time.
29:11Very impressive.
29:12There's no time penalty to carry into this.
29:14So, it's four minutes and 22 seconds.
29:16Our new leaders, the McKennas.
29:18It looked quick.
29:19It looked like that's going to be a time that I don't think anybody's going to beat that.
29:27McKennas, I would say you feel quite good about that.
29:31But on a scale of one to ten, how tough was it?
29:34It wasn't really that tough, so it wasn't difficult.
29:37The children were very, very strong.
29:39Andrew, I'd say you have to be so proud of that.
29:41It was unreal.
29:42Yeah.
29:43And then someone, as we finished, someone said,
29:44I'd say that was faster than the army, was it?
29:47The McKennan family, faster than the army.
29:51Next up for Inbits are Dunica and the Linehans.
29:54They lost their first event, so they go into this with a 20-second time penalty.
29:58Linehan family, isn't it mad to think you could have been out for a lovely round of golf today,
30:02but instead you're in the hardest course in the army camp?
30:04Look, our aim is to win this event, right, and get home early to Carp tonight.
30:08Oh, sorry.
30:09Love to hear this.
30:10Yes, well done.
30:11So we're very, very confident going into it.
30:13Typical Ireland's fittest family.
30:15We take something so wholesome, like a jigsaw, and we make it absolutely torturous.
30:20It's going to be tough.
30:21Ready to go for the Linehan family are Sean, Diarmuid, Ava, and Rory.
30:29Three, two, one.
30:32Paul O'Donovan gets them underway, and first to go is 18-year-old Ava.
30:37Great job.
30:38Fast start from her.
30:39Remember, the Linehans are carrying a 20-second time penalty into Inbits.
30:44They are third of our four families to go.
30:46Excellent, Ava, excellent.
30:47First of the cargo nets is through there.
30:49Perfect.
30:50That is the goal.
30:51Impressively.
30:52Great encouragement from the rest of her family.
30:54Same again now.
30:55Keep low.
30:56High back.
30:57High back.
30:58Brilliant, Ava.
30:59Outstanding.
31:00Offering great encouragement to Ava Linehan.
31:03Let's go, let's go.
31:04So she's out of that trench.
31:05Grab and go, you've 20 seconds of work.
31:0720 seconds of work.
31:08Puzzle piece number one.
31:09Go, go, go, go.
31:10Been dragged back down the course.
31:11Come on, Ava.
31:12Try the leg.
31:13Keep in it.
31:14This is a brilliant leg.
31:15Ava.
31:16Pumping the legs.
31:17A little bit of a stumble, and she's fallen.
31:19She's fallen, Ava Linehan, but she's okay.
31:21And the rest of her family helped her out there.
31:24Go, go, go, go.
31:25Here goes Sean.
31:27Quick start from Sean.
31:29Very fast.
31:30So he's got the sandbags.
31:33Which are on the two barrels ahead of him.
31:36There's sandbag number one.
31:38A little bit of a slip.
31:39The conditions underfoot are perfect.
31:42It's a lovely dry day, but...
31:44Open nose, open nose, open nose.
31:46Challenging at times.
31:47That's the second bag.
31:48He goes round the barrel.
31:49Collects the other bag.
31:51Bit of a stumble again from Sean Linehan.
31:53But not fatal.
31:54Bags delivered to the top of the barrel.
31:56Two minutes.
31:57They've got a beat.
31:58Well, the quickest time to McKenna is 4.22.
32:00They hit these back on 5.29.
32:02Whatever the Linehan's get here, we're going to stick another 20 seconds onto it after the first event.
32:07Go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
32:14Third to go now is 16-year-old Rory Lenahan.
32:18Bit of a stumble from him.
32:20He's got to jump over the straw bails.
32:24Looks like fun.
32:25That's good technique.
32:26Spinning through them.
32:28And again, repeating the dose.
32:30Great work, Rory.
32:31So Rory is fast here.
32:33He's made up some time.
32:34Oh, he's got to drag the puzzle piece behind him.
32:39He got so invested in what he was doing.
32:42He forgot about maybe the most important part.
32:44So this is a good time.
32:46Third one back.
32:47Heading for three and a half minutes.
32:49And last to go is Dad Dierman.
32:51He's a High Rocks fan.
32:53He's a big golfer.
32:54And he's got to drag this tire.
32:56Down that trench.
32:58It's certainly not as heavy as the golf bag he'd be used to carrying around the course.
33:02Good solid pace.
33:05The rope wrapped over his left shoulder.
33:08And he's got rid of the tire.
33:11He's going quick as well.
33:12Another stumble.
33:13The Lillians have had trouble just keeping their feet.
33:16And now the final key's back.
33:18They're not going to be the quickest.
33:20Get it on!
33:21As long as there's no mistakes here, they will be the second fastest out of the three.
33:24Help! Help!
33:25They just have to fit the final piece of the jigsaw in there.
33:27That cost them a couple of seconds.
33:28It all has to be pressed into position.
33:304.42.
33:31With the 20 second time penalty, it's 5.02.
33:33They are not safe yet.
33:35Outstanding.
33:37Hey, hey.
33:38Outstanding.
33:39Every one of you.
33:40Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
33:42Honestly, so good.
33:43Everyone did their leg really well.
33:45And yeah, I'm just delighted with everyone.
33:47Ava, Afforda, Aurora, they all put in a serious shift.
33:52So I couldn't have asked for more from them.
33:54We set it right to run.
33:55We've done the best we can.
33:56It was a very poor performance this morning.
33:58There was a lot of constructive criticism from our coach, Danica.
34:01So I think we've bounced back.
34:03Whatever about doing really well, it's built confidence again.
34:06So the Lenehans are back.
34:07We're confident and it's great.
34:09Last up for in bits are Andrew's Hilliard family.
34:13With no time penalty hanging over their heads, they're in a strong position.
34:17For the Hilliards, this event should suit them.
34:21There's a lot of running.
34:22Well, talking about the 20 seconds, that is a huge advantage as far as I'm concerned.
34:27The only thing that can trip us up here is mistakes.
34:30As long as we keep a lid on it, I think we're in good shape.
34:32I think so.
34:33Let's go well, folks.
34:34Yay!
34:35Ready to go for the Hilliards.
34:37It's Dad, Mel.
34:39Daughters, Ellen, Alana and Julia.
34:45Three, two, one.
34:48The Hilliards from County Kildare, last to go.
34:50And on the first leg, it's Alana.
34:52Good stuff, Alana.
34:53She is a primary school teacher.
34:55She's got the camo net crawl.
34:59For the Hilliard family to avoid the Eliminator, they need to beat the Lenehans' time of five minutes and two seconds.
35:06So that's the target that they have.
35:09Nice, Alana.
35:10There you go.
35:11So a good solid start from Alana under the first camo net.
35:15Well done, perfect.
35:16Good stuff.
35:17Andrew Trimble right beside her and she's out of the trench.
35:23There's Jigsaw piece number one.
35:25Go, go, go, go!
35:29So a little bit of a stumble there from Alana.
35:32You may think it's easy to pull something like that along behind you.
35:35Sometimes it can trip you up, literally.
35:37Second in, it's Julia.
35:40She's got the sandbags.
35:42Running is one of her big passions and she's pumping those arms and legs.
35:46She's down to the trench and in she goes.
35:52Girls in this family all very into volleyball.
35:58Sandbag number one.
36:01And here is sandbag number two.
36:04Let's go after it.
36:06All good.
36:07So Julia has got two bags and just has to deliver them down to the barrel at the bottom of the trench.
36:15And they'll be very nearly halfway there.
36:17Empty the tank home.
36:18Julia, let's go.
36:19Empty the tank is the message from Andrew Trimble.
36:22Let's go all the way home. Let's go.
36:23Over two and a half minutes done.
36:25Remember, it's 5-0-2.
36:26That's where they've got to be.
36:27And they've got to be inside if they want to avoid the eliminator.
36:32Second piece placed in the frame and third to go is Ellen.
36:37She's got the straw bale jump.
36:40She is a scientist, an environmental scientist.
36:44That's a good solid start from Ellen Hilliard.
36:46Great stuff.
36:47That's perfect.
36:48We're in good shape.
36:49That's really good.
36:50So bale number two of the four.
36:53She has to get over.
36:55Grab it at the end of the rope.
36:57Good steady pace.
36:58Empty the tank all the way home, Ellen.
36:59Let's go.
37:00Great stuff.
37:01Well done.
37:02Go, go, go, go.
37:03Ellen with the last bit of max effort through four minutes.
37:075-0-2 is what they've got to try and beat to avoid the eliminator.
37:11This is going to be tight.
37:12The third piece of the jigsaw placed inside the frame.
37:15And last to go is Dad Mel.
37:20Many years ago he was on a sports scholarship in the United States.
37:25All the way home, Mel.
37:26Let's go.
37:27Great fitness in Mel.
37:28You can see that as he pulls that tire down the trench.
37:31Well done, Mel.
37:32They're not going to do it.
37:33Grab the end of the rope.
37:34They're just going to miss out.
37:35Mel has the final piece of the jigsaw.
37:38So the Hilliard family, because they couldn't beat the Linehan's time of 5-0-2,
37:42they've been very close, haven't they?
37:43They really have been very close.
37:44They've no time penalty to carry into this.
37:46The clock stops at 5-14.
37:48They are in the eliminator, the Hilliards.
37:50Well done, folks.
37:51Great stuff.
37:52So with all four races complete, the McKennas and the Linehans have got the fastest times,
37:57with the Hilliards and the Hickeys at the bottom half of the scoreboard.
38:00Despite their time penalty, the Linehans remain in second place, and along with the McKennas grab a place in the quarterfinals, leaving the Hilliards and the Hickeys in the eliminator.

38:40Before the break, we saw Andrews McKenna's and Dunika's Linehan's
38:43both guarantee themselves a spot in our quarter-finals.
38:46But there's still one spot up for grabs.
38:50And it's a Trimble vs. O'Callaghan eliminator for the Hilliard and Hickey families.
38:56It's time now for the eliminator, where Andrews Hilliards are going to take on Dunika's Hickeys.
39:01But will Andrew continue that winning streak for our newbie coaches
39:04by bringing two families through to the quarter-finals?
39:07Let's find out.
39:10Tonight's eliminator will be relentless.
39:14First, our families must flip a heavy truck tyre for 50 metres down the runway
39:19until it's completely past the fittest family barrels.
39:22Next, it's a climb over a 2.6 metres high container
39:25and up and over three round straw bales.
39:29After that, they have to carry a 50kg army training log to a pallet with eight sandbags.
39:35They have to carry those to another pallet
39:37before tackling our eight-foot or 2.4 metres high wall.
39:42Once over that, it's a run up our famous ramp.
39:44The first family with four people standing at the top
39:47wins the race and a place in the quarter-finals.
39:50The entire day, it does feel like it's been a marathon of the day, it's going to come down to a couple of moments.
40:01That ramp at the end, that's going to be the big one.
40:04You know, I did always want to have a go at the ramp, so I'm going to get that chance now.
40:13There's parts of the course that will make it harder with the wet weather, particularly the ramp at the end.
40:19Hoping someone's going to get out with a towel before we go up it.
40:21No, I'm absolutely looking to finish Strimby and get rid of one of his families, it'd be great.
40:27Take the smugness off him.
40:29It kind of feels like there's a change in tone in the last kind of ten minutes.
40:33There's a seriousness that's descended on the whole group.
40:37We're going to have to see if it's going to be a beginner's look or a lot of experience.
40:41See you soon.
40:41Thank you, Lorne.
40:42Are we still friends?
40:43No, I'll chat to you in about six minutes.
40:45The Eliminator is about to begin.
40:50For the Hilliard family in gold, it's Ellen, Julia, Alana and Mel.
40:56And for the Hickeys in white, it's Jodie, Connor, Ruby and Cindy.
41:03Three, two, one.
41:08A place in the quarterfinal is on the line here for the Hilliards in gold, closest to us.
41:14And the Hickey family wearing white on the left of your screen.
41:18So this tyre will...
41:20The Hilliards appear to be taking turns with this.
41:24So just going two at a time, but it's more of a combined effort from the Hickey family, as you can see.
41:31The weather has taken a little bit of a turn.
41:35And it's a lead at the minute for the Hilliards, so their strategy is working a little better under the watchful eye of Andrew Trimble.
41:42And it's not easy to keep that tyre going straight, but the Hilliards have managed to do that.
41:52And they are first through.
41:53They have to go around the barrel.
41:55And here they are at the container, which is 2.6 metres high.
42:00It's all about teamwork.
42:04Clear strategy.
42:05They have an order.
42:06You can hear they're going to win the Hickey family.
42:09So Julia Hilliard is first up for her family on top of the container.
42:12And there's Connor for the Hickey family.
42:14He's had some day, just 14 years of age.
42:17And it's not over yet.
42:18Give him space.
42:19Give him space.
42:23And that is Jodie about to get up there to make it three for the Hickey family.
42:26Mel Hilliard is finding that difficult.
42:28Careful, careful.
42:29It's not meant to be easy, and it certainly is not easy.
42:32And Andrew just has to reposition that mask for Mel.
42:37And he's got a hold of the lip at the top of the container.
42:40And his three daughters are dragging him up there.
42:42So all four Hilliards are on top of the container.
42:46It's a bit more of a battle for the Hickey family, but they're sorted now.
42:51And then you've got to get back down the other side.
42:532.6 metres, a couple of stumbles there.
42:55It's a long way down, but they are bunched up, falling all over the place.
43:03Here we go with the straw bales.
43:05This eliminator has everything in it.
43:07It's a serious test of fitness, of strategy, of resilience, mental toughness, the works.
43:16And they've lost a little bit of time there, the Hickey family.
43:19Connor is the anchorman, isn't he?
43:22There's Mel Hilliard.
43:23Still a long way to go.
43:29And the prize is big.
43:31A place in the quarterfinals.
43:32This log, the army training log, weighs 50 kilograms.
43:38And off they go.
43:39A lead for the Hilliards on the left in gold.
43:43But it's certainly not much of a lead.
43:44You wouldn't be writing home about this.
43:45So they get rid of the training log.
43:49And now they've got to move these sandbags from one pallet to the other.
43:53They've taken them all, both families.
43:55Here we go.
43:56They are neck and neck.
44:00So the sandbags delivered.
44:02And this wall is 8 feet high, 2.4 meters high.
44:09And really the same gig, smaller than the container.
44:14At this stage there, legs, arms, everything burning.
44:19Nothing is straightforward.
44:20So Connor is the first over for the Hickey family.
44:23Here come the Hilliards.
44:26So they've got two up at the top.
44:29And they can help the others, can they?
44:32Or will they be able to?
44:34So the rain has been coming down steadily all the way through this eliminator.
44:38And it's just making things much more difficult.
44:41Everything is quite slippy.
44:44But the Hilliards now, the four of them are over that final wall.
44:47And now they get a look at the ramp.
44:50And the Hickey family are there as well.
44:51So it's come down to this.
44:53Mel Hilliard on the left and Jody Hickey on the right.
44:56And Mel has got a hold on the top lip of that.
44:58Jody's come straight back down.
45:00So Mel trying to drag himself up there.
45:02Andrew Trimble has been very cool and calm and collected.
45:05It's a simple, straightforward message for him.
45:07So the Hilliards have got one up.
45:09The Hickey's no one at the moment.
45:10And you can see just how slippy that ramp is.
45:14So Jody Hickey is having another go.
45:16And he's failed too.
45:17And one of the Hilliards has come back down as well.
45:20So the tension builds and grows.
45:23The rain continues to fall.
45:25And only Mel Hilliard has managed to get up to the top of that ramp.
45:29Come on, come on, come on.
45:30You can see the stress in Dunneke's face.
45:32You can hear it in his voice.
45:34Another attempt, another fail on both sides.
45:38This is amazing.
45:40I've never seen anything like this before.
45:43But it's just like an ice rink.
45:49So Andrew Trimble deciding to use the coat.
45:51Using anything he can to try and dry that ramp.
45:54Connor for the Hickey family.
45:55Another attempt, another fail.
45:57Come on, let's see you, Jody, let's see you.
46:00Jody Hickey has got a hold of the lip on the top of the ramp.
46:03Oh, he's coming down again.
46:06With every second, the Mel leap to the top for the Hilliard family looks even more impressive.
46:10But the rain is still falling.
46:13The ramp is so slippy.
46:16And Jody was so close again.
46:19Another go.
46:20So that, is that Ellen?
46:22Yes, it is.
46:23Ellen's up there.
46:23Two for the Hilliards.
46:25Brilliant stuff.
46:26Absolutely amazing.
46:26How did she manage to do that?
46:29The Hickey still haven't got anyone up there.
46:32And we carry on again and again and again.
46:40And referee Paula Donovan has decided to call this.
46:45What's going to happen here?
46:46The health and safety of the families is always the paramount concern.
46:51So it just became unsafe for them to try and try any more attempts to get up the ramp.
46:55The ramp is no longer fit for purpose.
46:57So we've decided that we're going to base the result of the Eliminator on the fastest time in the time trial.
47:04That means that the family going through to the quarterfinal is going to be the Hilliards.
47:07You've had the fastest time in the trial.
47:08Well done, Jody.
47:09Well done, guys.
47:13It was just getting slippery and slippery.
47:16It was more so you're actually afraid then, is one of us actually going to hurt ourselves?
47:19So definitely it was the right call, I think.
47:21That wasn't a ramp.
47:22It was a water slide.
47:23We are disappointed.
47:24Disappointed that we didn't even get one of the guys up.
47:26But like, it was impossible.
47:29For the Hickeys, you should be so proud of yourselves.
47:32Honestly, incredible.
47:33Your endeavor all day, and especially Conor.
47:35I have to say, Conor was just, for me, to stand there.
47:38He was.
47:39Amazing.
47:40We're all dead proud of you.
47:42Yeah.
47:42So fantastic to have you, Hickeys.
47:44And we're so sad to lose you.
47:46Thank you so much.
47:47The standard of coaches and families this year in Ireland for this family, you can't afford a mistake.
47:53And I'm having too many at the moment.
47:55I need to up my game.
47:57Hats off to the Hickey family.
47:58They're incredible.
47:59And we battled with them in the first heat.
48:01And we end up battling against them in the Eliminator.
48:03But to come out on top, it's just, I'm so proud of our family, the girls.
48:09It's just amazing.
48:10Andrew, I did say to you that it comes down to the ramps all the time.
48:13Were you expecting that, though?
48:15No.
48:15At the start, it was kind of funny.
48:16Yeah.
48:17And then it got not that funny.
48:18Not that funny.
48:19And then I looked up at one stage, and Mel was up at the top.
48:22And he just looked like a lonely dad that wanted to spend time with his daughters.
48:26And we were trying to reunite this family.
48:29This is what it felt like.
48:30I'm delighted.
48:31You know, it's 2-0.
48:32Trimble, O'Callaghan.
48:33Do you know what the best part is?
48:35You get to do it all over again in the quarterfinal!
48:39Congratulations!
48:40Oh, that's it.
48:41Andrew Trimble has made a two from two with our newbie coaches.
48:45But will the beginners look continue next week?
48:47We'll have the last of our heats back at base camp.
48:51We'll see you then.
48:53Next week, veteran coach Davy Fitzgerald
48:56Get up, Fitz!
48:56And swimming champion Ellen Keane
48:58Good job, that was really good teamwork.
49:00Go head-to-head in our third and final heat.
49:03Bend down, bend down!
49:05Go, go, go, go, go!
49:06I like to be cool, calm, and collected, whereas Davy doesn't do that.
49:09He just likes to throw his toys out of the prom.
49:12Yeah, come on!
49:12Where one of them will lose a family.
49:15Take your time, decompose.
49:17You will get there.
49:18That doesn't sound like sabotage at all, Ellen.
49:47You will lose a two by one person.
49:48Bye.
49:50Bye.
49:57Bye.
49:58Bye.
49:58Bye.
50:01Bye.
