00:02And we are back live now. As you saw that the education of young Floyd Mayweather Jr. continues along an
00:08impressive route. He wants bigger and better opponents, specifically Hernado Hernandez, the WBC Super Featherweight Champion. He may well yet
00:16get him.
00:16But upcoming, the main event will involve Yoribor Acampas, the WBC, the IBF Junior Medalweight Champion, in his first title
00:25defense. And he will be taking on the number one rated challenger, Anthony Stevens. That will be coming your way
00:32as Oscar night continues here at the Foxwood Resorts Casino.
00:40Famous Oscars in sports. From the garbage can came green, fuzzy Oscar the Grouch.
00:45Oh, hey, now this is perfect happiness to me. Hey, what's the matter? It's slimy dampen your spirits? Gee, I
00:54guess you're all washed up.
01:01Oscar De La Hoya's big fight night continues as we get set for the main event here between Yoribor Acampas
01:07and Anthony Stevens.
01:08And there is no question that we have enjoyed the presence of Oscar De La Hoya here tonight as our
01:14co-host.
01:14But without a doubt, the next fight holds an awful lot of significance for Oscar De La Hoya in his
01:20other role.
01:20And, of course, that is as a boxer. Both fighters realize that a victory tonight will get them a shot
01:27at one Oscar De La Hoya.
01:34My name is Anthony Stevens. My hometown is Sweetport, Louisiana. I'm 33 years old.
01:41The reason I started boxing, man, I kind of like the one-on-one activity of boxing, you know.
01:48It's kind of it's man against man, you know, really proves who's the toughest, you know.
01:55My name is Yoribor Acampas, and I'm the IBF junior middleweight champion of the world.
01:58I'm 26 years old and was born in Sonora, Mexico.
02:03I started fighting to make money.
02:08I also wanted to take advantage of the abilities I feel that I have as a boxer.
02:22That was a long, hard road to get to where I am today.
02:25I spent 13 years as an amateur boxer.
02:27Should have put both hands underneath. He was right there.
02:30In addition to being a good athlete, having good balance, good boxing ability, and a decent punch.
02:37He can box or he can slug, whatever he has to do to get by.
02:43He's a tremendous puncher. He possesses a tremendous left hook to the body.
02:49Without punches, he knock them out a lot of people.
02:52He paralyzes the fighters with a left hook to the liver.
03:02Anthony Stevens is very fast and moves around the ring a lot.
03:06This is his third opportunity, so he will be well prepared.
03:14He throws good hard punches, you know.
03:18Acampas is going to come in looking to bang, but when he feels the power that I have, he's going
03:22to step back.
03:32Fight in the house for De La Hoya.
03:34That is a fighter that every fighter that shoots you are.
03:38This is a very important fight for me.
03:42I believe De La Hoya is the best fighter in the world, and everyone wants to beat him.
03:49If I can earn the opportunity to fight him, I will do my best to beat him.
03:55You always need to pass the first defense.
03:58The first defense is what separates the big boys with the small boys.
04:04This year, I think the third title shot, I think this is, this will be a charm for me.
04:10I mean, it's the most important fight because I'm 33 years old now, and I don't see trying to work
04:15my way back up to a title shot now.
04:17So the time is now a never.
04:21Well, we've made an awful lot to do, Gil, about this being a match that obviously Oscar will be watching
04:26with an awful lot of interest.
04:27But speak candidly what you're expecting to see and who you expect to be the victor in this one.
04:32What I expect to see is a very tough fight for both fighters.
04:37Anthony Stevens wants this fight so bad.
04:40But this is his third opportunity, and he feels that it's three strikes on your own.
04:45So this fight here means a lot to him.
04:48Yoriboy Campas, if he wins this fight tonight, he will have an opportunity against the Golden Boy.
04:53A good opportunity against you?
04:55A great opportunity.
04:56A great opportunity.
04:57Gil?
04:58Well, yeah.
04:58You talk about opportunities and opportunities, but again, Oscar, who would you like to see win this fight?
05:04I would love to see Yoriboy Campas win this fight.
05:09Anthony Stevens is a great champion.
05:10He's a great fighter and person.
05:13Excellent person outside the ring.
05:14Same with Yoriboy Campas.
05:16But people would rather see Yoriboy Campas against Oscar De La Hoya.
05:21All right.
05:22That's not the people in New Orleans and Mississippi.
05:25They'd rather see Stevens.
05:27Well, the good thing about boxing, of course, is that it will be decided in the ring as we get
05:32set for this match, a title match,
05:34the first title defense by that man there, Yoriboy Campas.
05:37As he's wearing the headdress, Fanacho, a native headdress composed of feathers, supposedly he's going to give him good luck.
05:44We'll find out.
05:47Famous Oscars in sports, simply known as Oscar, this international basketball star led Brazil to a stunning upset of the
05:56United States in the 1987 Pan Am Games.
06:03Back here on Fox Sports, Oscar De La Hoya's big fight night.
06:07Coming to you from Foxwoods Resort Casino as you take a look at Yoriboy Campas.
06:11A record of 69 and 2.
06:14He recognizes full well that our host tonight, Oscar De La Hoya, could be next in line for him as
06:20you take a look at the shaman priest, if you will.
06:25And what he is performing now is a routine that is to cleanse the ring of any evil spirits.
06:32We take a look at the peasant feathers and others on the headdress of Yoriboy Campas.
06:37And Campas said that he would not wear this headdress until, in fact, he was a champion.
06:42And it was given to him by a man that you know all too well.
06:45Well, I know the headdress well.
06:47Gaspar Ortega, who fought by guy Emil Griffin for the Championship of the World, wore that headdress in the ring.
06:54Didn't help him too much once the fight started.
06:57And that's the beauty of boxing.
06:59It's decided in the ring indeed.
07:04And Oscar, as we set this fight up again, Yoriboy Campas, a very tough, enclosed type of fighter.
07:11What will you be watching with particular interest as you see him fight tonight?
07:16Yoriboy Campas knows that he possesses great power with both hands.
07:21He's a fighter who is very confident.
07:24He will stay in there and brawl with anybody.
07:26He has been fighting for a very long time, well experienced.
07:29I see this fight very tough for Anthony Stevens, but also for Yoriboy Campas because Anthony Stevens can box.
07:36Well, here we have the tale of the table.
07:37You see, Stevens is like at the end of his career now.
07:40He has to do it now, 33 years of age.
07:43Everything else, Stevens has a good reach advantage.
07:47And here we have the same rules again, the standard rules.
07:50Now, these are standard for championship fights.
07:52No standing eight counts.
07:53No three knockdown rule.
07:55Only the referee can stop the fight.
07:56Cannot be saved by Bell in any round.
07:59And the butt rule, after four rounds, if they go to the scorecards.
08:03Before that, it's a technical draw.
08:06And with the cleansing of the ring nearly complete, we now go to one who is indeed very clean and
08:12dapper, Michael Buffer.
08:15And now, ladies and gentlemen, from Foxwoods Resort Casino, Top Rank Incorporated, along with your undisputed, undefeated king of beers,
08:26Budweiser.
08:26This Buds for you present 12 rounds of boxing for the IBF Junior Middleweight Championship of the World.
08:36Sanctioned by the Mashantucket Pequod Gaming and Athletic Commission, Chairman Robert Hayward, Vice Chairman Roy Butler, Commissioner Bill Hickey, Executive
08:46Director John Meskel.
08:47Also sanctioned by the International Boxing Federation, President Robert W. Lee, Supervisor at Ringside, Walter R. Stone.
08:56The three judges scoring this bout on a 10-point must system will be Robert O'Brien, Adelaide Triplett, and
09:03Steve Epstein.
09:04And when the bell rings, your referee in charge of the action, World Champion Veteran Ron Lipton.
09:11And now, for the thousands in attendance, and the millions watching around the world, ladies and gentlemen, from Foxwoods Resort
09:21Casino,
09:24Let's get ready to rumble!
09:34Introducing first, fighting out of the red corner, wearing red trimmed with white, his weight, 153 and one quarter pounds,
09:43his professional record, 29 victories, 17 by knockout, with eight defeats and two draws, he comes to us from Metairie,
09:52Louisiana.
09:53Ladies and gentlemen, here is the I.B.F. number one ranked junior middleweight in the world, Anthony, the Warrior,
10:04Steve!
10:09And in the moment, across the ring, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing blue trimmed with red, his weight,
10:16152 and three quarter pounds, his professional record, 69 victories, 59 by knockout, with only two losses.
10:27He comes to us from Navajo, Mexico, ladies and gentlemen, presenting the I.B.F. junior middleweight champion of the
10:37world, Yoriba Kampa!
10:46Chief second omen, chief second omen, gentlemen, you've both been given the rules, translating the other, you've both been given
10:58the rules before.
11:00I remind you now, respect each other, obey my commands, let's keep it strictly professional.
11:07Good luck, buena suerte.
11:11And for last minute information, let's check in with Sean O'Brady.
11:15J.B., in the corner of Anthony Stephens, Jimbo Stephenson tells me they're going to have Anthony Stephens attack with
11:22his right hand on the left side of the champion.
11:24That's because on the champion's face, there is a little bit of an abrasion.
11:28Fellas, the challenger wants to win this title by a cut.
11:33All right, Sean, and when we talked with him about that yesterday, he being, of course, Yoriba Kampa, he said
11:38no concerns about that nose.
11:39Well, I'd say I wouldn't be telling my fighter that he has to win a fight by cutting the other
11:43guy.
11:44I think that's the worst thing you can do, practically telling him the only chance he has to win is
11:49if he cuts the guy.
11:53Fellas, a big ring we have here, and it favors who?
11:56Oscar, I was going to ask you now, what do you think, Oscar?
11:58I feel he can favor Anthony Stephens.
12:01Yoriba Kampa is a brawler.
12:03He's a strong fighter.
12:04He goes forward all the time.
12:06Anthony Stephens is a boxer who can move on his toes, and he can just run at any time.
12:12If he feels he's hurt, if he feels any danger inside the ring, he can box and just move on
12:17his toes.
12:18Gil, you said you think this ring is about 24 feet, huh?
12:21It's one of the biggest rings I've seen in years.
12:24It's got to be at least 22 feet inside.
12:36He's going to have to try to do is to trap Stephens in the corners and against the ropes and
12:41try to make him exchange punches.
12:43He's very good at what I call last tag.
12:47Kampos is.
12:48He'll get that last left hook in, no matter how many punches you throw.
12:51He throws that left hook to the body.
12:53But as long as they stay on the outside, that's Stephens' area right there.
12:59Watch your way out.
12:59Yoriba Kampos is a fighter who will take 10 punches to give two of his own.
13:04He's got those heavy hands.
13:07And as we had mentioned earlier, Stephens had been a track man.
13:12And you think if he'd be a track man, they'd have a lot of stamina, but that's not been the
13:16case with Stephens.
13:16He has been able to wear down in fights.
13:18Now, Kampos, there's that left hook to the body.
13:21If he can keep landing that left hook to the body, he figures to wear Stephens out.
13:25Stephens, indeed, was a track star in high school.
13:27But, Gil, how do you explain not having the stamina in the ring?
13:31Well, I had a kid that was an all-city high school miler.
13:36And he was an amateur fighter.
13:38He used to get dead tired by the third man of every fight.
13:41And the reason was he wasn't relaxed.
13:43You have to learn to relax in that ring.
13:45And that comes with experience.
13:47Some guys never learn it.
13:49In the early going, Oscar, how do you size it up?
13:53I feel that Yoriboy Kampas has lots of experience.
13:56He knows that he can wear down his opponent by throwing body shots, throwing left hooks to the head.
14:02Very powerful shots.
14:03And Danny Stevens, he's a fighter who has to keep on boxing, has to use his jab.
14:09I feel that Yoriboy Kampas does have the edge in this first round.
14:12Now, Yoriboy claimed he was not concerned about that nose, which has been broken badly.
14:16Did you believe him?
14:18I, for some reason, did not believe him.
14:20That nose right now is bleeding at this point because Anthony Stevens is landing some right
14:24hands to that nose.
14:25When a fighter has a broken nose, the pain never goes away.
14:29The pain will always be there.
14:31And always, in back of that fighter's mind, that pain is there.
14:34And it bothers a fighter.
14:35It bothers a boxer when he's up in that ring.
14:41Back here at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, getting set for the second round of action between Kampas
14:46and Stevens.
14:47And they were working on Kampas' nose.
14:50He had an abrasion going into the fight.
14:52But it's not serious at all.
14:55Yoriboy's corner was very worried about that blood.
14:58Yoriboy actually asked his corner man, is it bleeding or is it okay?
15:03Sign of concern, a little too much early on.
15:06A bit of concern in the corner, a bit of concern with the boxer, Yoriboy Kampas, which affects
15:11the fighter in the long run.
15:14Good left delivered by Stevens.
15:15Work the way out.
15:17That's it.
15:18Nice introduction.
15:18Catching Yoriboy.
15:19Flash.
15:19Flash that is on the forehead.
15:27A spotty shot by Kampas.
15:28You're locked up.
15:30Stop punching.
15:30Stevens overworked that left jab in the first round.
15:33But it's not a stiff jab.
15:34Once he stiffens up that jab, he has a good chance to bust Kampas up in this fight.
15:39Overworked, Gil?
15:41No, he's using it pretty good right now.
15:43Okay.
15:44But again, you can see Kampas sneaks that left hook into the body as he just did there.
15:49Locked up.
15:49Stop punching.
15:49To do that time after time.
15:51And that can affect you as the rounds go on.
15:54The legs start to go.
15:55It's over.
15:58Kampas, an immensely popular fighter in his hometown.
16:02The one who gives an awful lot of himself.
16:04And he certainly wants to continue to do just that.
16:08Work the way out.
16:10One might ask, how could Stevens with a record of 29-8 and 2 be considered the number one ranked
16:16contender?
16:17Well, he fought for the championship of the world.
16:19Hands are free.
16:19Work the way out.
16:20And the fight ended by a freak accident.
16:22That's why they kept him up as number one.
16:25Watch the head.
16:29Legitimate, you think, Gil?
16:31Yes, he is a tough guy.
16:32I did this fight with Aaron Davis, who was a former world champion, and he beat him.
16:39And Oscar, I can't help but feel that you're sitting here tabulating, taking some notes here.
16:44And anything surprising by either fighter?
16:47Well, it's surprising to see that Anthony Stevens is staying right in front of Yoriboy Kampas.
16:51Stop punching.
16:52Step back.
16:52I would imagine that Anthony Stevens would bark some more.
16:55Now that he's feeling the heavy punches, beautiful right hand from Anthony Stevens, but he's still stationary there right in
17:01front of Yoriboy Kampas.
17:02That's Kampas' best fight there.
17:05And as Oscar mentioned at the top, now or never for Anthony Stevens.
17:10This is his third title shot.
17:11He realizes this is his last opportunity.
17:14Another good right hand by Stevens.
17:16And you know, Kampas has that scar tissue over that left eye.
17:21Stevens keeps landing that right hand.
17:24You're not proud of it.
17:25It can be very, very dangerous for Yoriboy Kampas to stay there and take those punches from Anthony Stevens.
17:32Anthony Stevens is throwing a lead right hand, which he is landing.
17:37Well, Kampas certainly showed his ability to take some very tough punishment in the fight against Raul Marquez.
17:42That was indeed a war, and a bit of one here as well.
17:48Back for the third round of this IBF junior middleweight championship bout between Yoriboy Kampas and Anthony Stevens.
17:54And you can see they're working on Kampas' nose.
17:56That took place during the break there.
17:58And Oscar, were there any concerns expressed by the corner of Kampas?
18:02Look, Kampas' thunder was not concerned.
18:05Good right by Stevens.
18:07He's trying to follow up.
18:08Rock Kampas.
18:12Look your way up.
18:15Kampas trying to stay in tight to shake it off.
18:18Good follow again.
18:19Counter right by Stevens.
18:25But Kampas is tough company indeed as he continues to try to work the body, Gil.
18:30This is Kampas' kind of fight now.
18:34Stevens can very well punch himself out.
18:36In the meanwhile, those body punches of Kampas should add up.
18:40But he's in danger right now.
18:42Kampas is.
18:43Got nailed a couple of real good solid shots.
18:45And you know, in the first two rounds, Stevens out-punched Kampas like two to one.
19:08Kampas is a very focused fighter.
19:20He has the experience.
19:21He has so many fights that he knows what to do in these type of situations.
19:28Surprisingly to see, Kampas was the one that got hurt.
19:31And Stevens is the one that's tired.
19:33Well, again, that right hand may have done Stevens more calm and good.
19:39Because it made him open up.
19:42Like Kampas is out.
19:44Right up Kampas is out.
19:45And he stopped punching.
19:46Stevens got anxious.
19:47He thought he could get the knockout.
19:49And now he's tired.
19:51Kampas with his experience, he's trying to set him up.
19:55Trying to go for that knockout.
19:56Because he knows that Anthony Stevens is wearing down.
19:59Work your way up.
20:00Those watching at home feel that Stevens enjoys a two to one advantage at this point in the fight.
20:09Stop punching.
20:10Step back.
20:18Again, Kampas lands that left hook or right hand to the body.
20:24Last punch every time.
20:26No matter how many punches they throw, he gets the last one in.
20:28And Stevens looking winded indeed, Gil.
20:32Definitely.
20:33See those body shots that Yoriboy Kampas is throwing can have an effect in the later rounds.
20:38See, Anthony Stevens now is feeling those punches.
20:41He's tired.
20:41He's winded.
20:43May not have to be later rounds either.
20:45Might be right now.
20:46That's experience for you.
20:49Back here to live action.
20:50And there is some concern as to what's taking place here in the corner.
20:53Gil, you think that maybe Stevens is wanting to throw the towel in?
20:56Well, he says, I think, that he dislocated his shoulder.
21:00They're working on his shoulder now.
21:01He's shaking his head.
21:03I think this fight has probably stopped by now.
21:07Meanwhile, Miguel Piaz is asking, hey, wait a minute now.
21:10We should be engaging in action here.
21:12So what's going on?
21:13Well, if that shoulder went out, it's not going to do him any good to put it back.
21:18He can't continue.
21:21And that is it.
21:23So Yoriboy Kampas successfully defends his IBF junior middleweight title as Anthony Stevens
21:31is not able to answer the bell in this, the fourth round, having thrown that left shoulder
21:36out.
21:39And again, fellas, I was surprised as both you and Oscar were saying, although Kampas was
21:46being hit with some nice shots, he collected himself and experienced play a part there as
21:51he continued to come back.
21:52He's a very, very tough guy.
21:54He's detriming.
21:55And he gets that last punch.
21:57How many punches you hit him with, he hits you with the last one.
22:01And mostly they're body shots.
22:03Well, the headdress goes back on the champion.
22:06So the ring was cleansed of any bad spirits.
22:10And in fact, it paid dividends here.
22:12Gil said it did not work with Gaspar Ortega when he fought his guy, but it did tonight.
22:19Let's see where maybe that shoulder became problematic, Gil.
22:22Oscar?
22:23Yeah, the left shoulder.
22:25Left, tooks right to the body.
22:29Beautiful combinations.
22:37You know, usually when that shoulder goes out, you can really see a big lump there.
22:42I really, truly feel that Anthony Stevens could not take those body punches.
22:48Yoriboy Kampas brought in his experience.
22:52There you see a right uppercut to the body.
22:55Left hook to the body.
22:58And Anthony Stevens could not take those punches.
23:01Well, again, he let it all hang out when he hit Oscar with that right hand on the chin.
23:05I mean, when he hit Yoriboy with that right hand on the chin.
23:08That's what happened.
23:09He abandoned his strategy.
23:12He went all out for it.
23:14Punched himself out.
23:15And then Yoriboy just came on.
23:16And as a result, Dr. Anthony Alessi stopped the fight.
23:20For the official particulars, let's go to Michael Buffer.
23:24Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please.
23:26At the end of the third round, referee Ron Lipton summoned the position into ringside
23:31to examine the left shoulder of Anthony Stevens.
23:36Possibility of a dislocation.
23:37The bout had to be called to the halt.
23:39The official time at the end of round number three.
23:43The winner by TKO victory.
23:45And still, the reigning IBF junior middleweight champion of the world, Yoriboy Kappa.
24:04Well, Oscar, you've had an opportunity to see up close a guy you said you would give an opportunity to
24:11at some point down the road.
24:12And your thoughts about Yoriboy as you watch him up close.
24:15Very, very impressive.
24:17Yoriboy Kappa, I always said he's a strong puncher.
24:20He can take a punch.
24:22He has the experience to go up against any opposition and do very well.
24:27And I feel that Yoriboy Kappa deserves a title shot.
24:31And we'll see what he has to say as we check in with Sean O'Brady.
24:34Miguel Diaz is going to help me interpret for Yoriboy.
24:37Miguel, would you ask Yoriboy, at what point did he know he had Anthony Stevens?
24:57Soon I start punching in the body, I realize that he's gonna quit in the stool or is gonna lose
25:03because nobody can take my body punches.
25:05I'm a very, very specialty for body punches.
25:08And nobody can take my body punches.
25:10Yeah, those were terrific.
25:11In fact, that was the turning point of this fight.
25:14What did this fight do for him?
25:32Well, he said that now I got this fight out of the way, now I'm thinking about Oscar De La
25:38Hoya.
25:38Now let's make the Oscar De La Hoya fight.
25:41Now, he has, well, soon Oscar De La Hoya get fixed with his hand,
25:46and also soon he come out of his compromise with Charpentier.
25:49Let's talk about Oscar De La Hoya.
25:52Miguel, was Yuri Boy a bit nervous in this fight because Oscar De La Hoya is sitting at ringside?
26:06No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
26:09I didn't have no problem with Oscar De La Hoya being in the ringside.
26:13To me was another person watching the fight.
26:15You're saying that no man can take his body punches or compasses.
26:19Does that include a great fighter like Oscar De La Hoya?
26:22Of course, of course.
26:24I thought you were asking me.
26:26I know what you think, you're the trainer.
26:45Well, if Oscar De La Hoya get ready for that, who knows?
26:48Let's see.
26:49Well, you'd like to have Oscar De La Hoya.
26:50Well, from the jungle with Yuri Boy compass, back down to you, JB.
26:54All right, Sean, well, certainly an awful lot of talk about the host here this evening,
26:58but certainly nothing can take place.
27:01First, June 13th, it's Patrick Charpentier, but will it be Yuri Boy compass after that?
27:07June 13th, I have Patrick Charpentier.
27:11It's going to be a very difficult fight.
27:13And one thing about me is that when I fight fighters,
27:15I not only prepare myself for that one particular fight,
27:19but I'm always thinking about my future.
27:21I'm always thinking about the opponent that's next for me.
27:24So I'm going to start working on my sit-ups from this point now.
27:28The sit-ups as well, of course, to tighten up that ab, which looks pretty good.
27:32You know, we talked about that risk.
27:33Yuri Boy alluded to the risk.
27:35Is that risk okay?
27:36The risk is okay.
27:37I feel in perfect health.
27:39Everything is perfect.
27:40And I feel that I was going for years with the pain.
27:44Now that I don't have the pain, we'll see what happens.
27:46All right, no pain in the ring tonight except for the ab of Anthony Stevens.
27:52All joy for Yuri Boy compass.
27:53Don't go away.
27:54We've got some of the greatest bouts, highlights from the greatest bouts of Oscar De La Hoya.
28:01Back here to the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
28:05We have just seen some outstanding bouts here this evening.
28:08And, folks, we're going to see even better action upcoming
28:10in some of the great bouts fought by young Oscar De La Hoya.
28:14One of the early ones took place back in May 1995.
28:18It was the lightweight unification title involving Rafael Ruelas.
28:24Round 2, schedule 12.
28:26Crowd was in a tizzy between the rounds.
28:32And now Ruelas, who took a couple of tough bunches in that opening round,
28:38trying to press the attack here, trying to crowd De La Hoya.
28:47Left hook by Ruelas.
28:51I think some of the power was taken away from that one by De La Hoya,
28:55backing away from the punch at that point.
28:59This is the kind of pressure Ruelas puts on you, though.
29:02See, he's relentless.
29:03He's right in front of you all the time.
29:05He wears fighters down just this way.
29:10He does not give you a moment to think.
29:14De La Hoya using that stiff left jab and movement
29:18to offset this pressure from Ruelas.
29:20And movement is what he needs against Ruelas.
29:22And he's doing well so far at De La Hoya.
29:26Left hand by De La Hoya.
29:28And down goes Ruelas.
29:31Ruelas is up in the count.
29:33No, he's on his knees at 5, 6, 7, up at 8.
29:37And he is in serious trouble.
29:39He is in serious trouble.
29:40He is very wobbly.
29:42De La Hoya with a big opportunity here.
29:44A right hand by De La Hoya.
29:46And down goes Ruelas for the second time in Round 2.
29:50The count is 5, and Ruelas is up already.
29:53He looks at Steele and says he's okay.
29:56The three knockdown rule is in effect for this fight.
29:59Plenty of time.
30:00120 remaining in Round 2.
30:02De La Hoya with the pressure.
30:04And the fight is over.
30:05Oscar De La Hoya has defeated Rafael Ruelas
30:09with a second-round technical knockout.
30:16And there can be no question
30:18that there is a real superstar now in boxing.
30:23And certainly no doubt about that.
30:25And Gil, the obvious was the power displayed
30:28by Oscar De La Hoya in that.
30:29But at that stage in his development,
30:31what did you see then versus where he is now?
30:34Well, I thought it was more obvious
30:35the patience that he displayed
30:38because Ruelas was really trying to put pressure on him,
30:41put pressure on him.
30:42He was very patient,
30:43scoring with a left jab,
30:44scoring with a left jab,
30:46a little bit of movement here,
30:47a little bit of movement there
30:48until he caught the guy reaching.
30:50One good shot, and that was it.
30:51And he can punch that hard.
30:53So much hype leading into that fight.
30:56I was surprised at how awkward Ruelas was.
30:59Rafael Ruelas was undefeated
31:00with 40-some-odd fights.
31:02He had a great knockout punch with both fists.
31:06And this fight here
31:07was supposed to be one of the best fights of that year.
31:11Rafael Ruelas prepared himself
31:12up in Big Bear Mountains in California,
31:15my training camp.
31:17And we worked for about three months for this fight.
31:20We went into the fight.
31:21He was anxious.
31:22He was ready.
31:23He was throwing punches.
31:25My tactic was to box him,
31:27make him miss,
31:28and when I see a mistake that he makes,
31:30conquer him at that moment.
31:31And you were right on top of him.
31:33All right, folks,
31:34we will take a look
31:35chronicling the development of Oscar De La Hoya.
31:38We've got more highlights coming your way
31:40as we continue.
31:41Back with more after this.
31:45Best of the West hit the home stretch
31:47in their final dash
31:48before the Kentucky Derby.
31:50The Santa Anita Derby,
31:51presented by National,
31:53Saturday, April 4th,
31:54at 5 Eastern.
31:57As we welcome you back
31:58to Oscar De La Hoya's
31:59big fight night
32:00here in Southeastern Connecticut,
32:01you know that Anthony Stevens
32:03could not answer the bell
32:04at the start of the fourth round.
32:05That due at the time
32:07to what we were told
32:08was a left shoulder injury.
32:10Let's check in with Sean O'Grady
32:11for the latest.
32:14It's a somber locker room
32:16back here, JB.
32:17Anthony Stevens,
32:18first of all,
32:18how's the shoulder?
32:21It's bad, I guess.
32:23It's okay right now.
32:24You know,
32:25it's hurting pretty bad in the ring,
32:26but I know I'm sitting back
32:27relaxing,
32:28it feels a lot better now.
32:29Yeah, have you ever had
32:30this pain before in your shoulder?
32:31Well, not quite this bad.
32:33You know,
32:34you came into this fight
32:35with so much confidence.
32:37Did you expect him
32:38to hit as hard as he did?
32:40Oh, definitely I did.
32:41You know,
32:42I expect him to hit hard,
32:43you know,
32:45but that wasn't a problem,
32:47you know.
32:47He did punch pretty hard,
32:49but that wasn't
32:49the biggest problem,
32:50you know,
32:50it's just my shoulder.
32:51The shoulder butt,
32:52Anthony,
32:53I tell you,
32:53you were getting clocked
32:55with some pretty good body shots.
32:56Do you think
32:57they took any steam out of you?
32:58Well, they did take
32:59some steam out of me,
33:00you know,
33:00but I could have continued
33:01if it wasn't for the shoulder,
33:02you know.
33:03But he did hit me
33:04some pretty good punches,
33:05you know.
33:05But I'm a warrior,
33:07you know,
33:07and I can take
33:08pretty good punches.
33:09Tell me about him,
33:10though.
33:10He's a good fighter.
33:11How do you think
33:12he and Oscar De La Hoya
33:13would match up?
33:15Well,
33:16it'd be a good fight.
33:17I think it'd be
33:17a pretty good matchup.
33:19Yeah.
33:20All right,
33:20Anthony Stevens,
33:22good luck to you.
33:23Any idea what you're
33:23going to do now?
33:24Well,
33:24I'll just take some time
33:25off and sit back.
33:26Spend some time
33:27in my family
33:27and just sit back
33:28and think about
33:28what I want to do.
33:29Yeah.
33:29Well,
33:30you got a lot
33:30of thinking about.
33:31JB,
33:32you got a man here
33:33who's really been
33:34humiliated tonight.
33:35He wanted to win
33:36this championship.
33:38Understandably so,
33:39Sean.
33:39Not very expansive
33:40because of that
33:41disappointment.
33:42But when we come back,
33:43we will continue
33:44to chronicle
33:44the rise of
33:45Oscar De La Hoya,
33:46some of the brightest
33:47moments in the ring
33:48for one Oscar De La Hoya.
33:53The light surrounding
33:54the golden boy
33:55Oscar De La Hoya
33:56continued to glow brighter
33:58in the month of
33:59December of 1995
34:01as he took on
34:02a man who was a terror,
34:03Jesse James Leha.
34:09Here's the start
34:10of round two.
34:11Jesse James Leha,
34:12the challenger
34:12in black.
34:14Oscar De La Hoya,
34:15WBO,
34:16lightweight champ
34:16in white.
34:18Buddy between rounds,
34:19my limited Spanish.
34:20It seems like
34:21Robert Alcazar
34:22was telling Oscar
34:23more defense
34:24move a little bit.
34:26Yeah, well,
34:26because he has
34:27Leha's reaching,
34:28that's what he wants
34:29because when the guy
34:30reads like I said earlier,
34:31he's off balance,
34:31he's off balance
34:32and he's open for counters.
34:33Now, Richie Jacqueti,
34:35Leha's trainer,
34:37said you landed
34:37a good left hook.
34:38Did you see one?
34:40He must have been
34:40looking at the last fight.
34:44Leha trying to figure out
34:46how to get inside
34:47De La Hoya's
34:48height and reach advantage.
34:50Hasn't really done
34:51anything to De La Hoya's
34:52body.
34:53De La Hoya
34:54controlling the first round.
34:57And you're trying to talk
34:58about your aim for his chest.
35:00Because that never moves,
35:01right?
35:01That's right.
35:06It seems like
35:07Leha is short as he is.
35:08Good left hook
35:08by De La Hoya.
35:09His hands aren't up
35:10high enough.
35:11Good two-quest
35:12combination by De La Hoya.
35:16Is it a matter of time,
35:17buddy?
35:18Yep.
35:22But De La Hoya's
35:23hands are starting
35:24to come down.
35:24Is that a sign
35:25of carelessness?
35:26He's just setting him up.
35:28He knows Leha's
35:29can't hurt him.
35:37Oscar De La Hoya
35:38just concentrating
35:39on Jesse James Leha
35:40trying to set him up
35:41to land a right hand.
35:42It was a looping right.
35:45Missed the left.
35:46Leha ducked
35:47under the right.
35:49Not much offense
35:50from Leha, buddy.
35:51No.
35:52Trying to duck
35:53those bombs
35:53that have been thrown
35:54at him.
36:00De La Hoya
36:0122 years old.
36:03Leha 29.
36:07Leha missed a lot
36:08of punches
36:09in that sequence,
36:10buddy.
36:11He's trying to hit
36:12and not get hit
36:12at the same time.
36:15Quick flurry
36:16by Oscar.
36:17Hit.
36:17Oh!
36:17A perfect
36:18left hook
36:19by Oscar De La Hoya.
36:21One, two, three, four, five, six, six, seven, eight.
36:28Picked the perfect
36:29left hook
36:29by Oscar De La Hoya.
36:31One, One, One, One, One.
36:32And watch.
36:32Watch, watch.
36:35De La Hoya
36:36in for the kill.
36:37Leha backing away.
36:39Leha is open
36:40for a left hook.
36:45De La Hoya
36:45just pouring
36:46under punches.
36:47Right hand.
36:48Good left hook
36:49and right.
36:49He's taking punches
36:57He's out on his feet right now, but
37:15The bell rang no stop
37:22It's all over
37:27Joining us now is the fourth member of our broadcast group, Sean O'Grady
37:30Who ended his career with a record of 81-5, a former lightweight champion
37:35And Sean, as you take a look at the progress of Oscar De La Hoya
37:39What do you see then? What do you see now?
37:42Well, I see a much more composed fighter now in Oscar De La Hoya
37:45Yeah, he was terrific then when he knocked out James Leha
37:48But today, he's much more composed in the ring
37:51He doesn't waste shots like he did earlier in his career
37:54And he doesn't get hit like he did earlier in his career
37:55He is a terrific offensive fighter
37:59As well as a terrific defensive fighter
38:02All right, when we come back
38:04We won't make this a love fest only
38:06We will ask Oscar some hard questions indeed
38:08And we'll see if Gil will get into it with us
38:10Including a look at an outstanding match against
38:13Julio Cesar Chavez after this
38:19All right, as we welcome you back
38:20Continuing with Oscar De La Hoya's big fight night
38:23Not like many fighters, Oscar De La Hoya had a hero
38:26By the name of Julio Cesar Chavez
38:28And boy, was it a memorable bout
38:34Round four
38:38Scheduled for 12
38:39And Chavez comes out like a bull this time
38:43That brings the crowd alive
38:44They want him
38:45The old warrior
38:47To prevail against the young lion
38:49Yeah, and he needs to
38:50There's a left hand by Chavez
38:54And that crowd can propel you
38:57To victory
38:58That crowd helps you because
38:59When you hear that crowd
39:00It's deafening
39:01And you think you're hurt a lot of times
39:04Even though you're not
39:04Good left hooks
39:05From Chavez
39:06His best punch is that left
39:10De La Hoya
39:11Still very patient
39:12Using the jab
39:14Keeping his distance
39:15And again Chavez is trying to fight
39:18Backing up
39:21De La Hoya says
39:22I know I can KO anyone
39:23But tonight I just want to box
39:26And given all of the things
39:28That have happened
39:28In Julio Cesar Chavez's career
39:30I think it's good advice
39:32And again there's that educated
39:34Left hand
39:34Of Oscar De La Hoya
39:36Constantly in the face of Chavez
39:39Yeah, educated left hand
39:40Is right
39:40De La Hoya has been fighting
39:42His whole life
39:42He had hoped
39:43To one day be a world champion
39:45And be in a fight of this nature
39:46He comes from a boxing family
39:51His grandfather
39:52Was a boxer
39:53Vincente
39:54His father Joel
39:55Also was a fighter
39:58And there was
39:59De La Hoya
40:00Catching Chavez
40:01Chavez flying to lunge forward
40:04But De La Hoya
40:05Is waiting for him to rush in
40:06He nailed him pretty good
40:08By far the most mature performance
40:11By Oscar De La Hoya
40:12That I've seen
40:13And I've seen virtually
40:14All of his fights
40:15In the fourth round
40:16He has already shown
40:17Great maturity
40:18And there was blood streaming
40:19Again from the cut
40:20Of Chavez
40:21I've had my eye on
40:22Oscar De La Hoya
40:23For a long time
40:24He is an outstanding fighter
40:26And another good left hand
40:28Inside
40:28And another left hook
40:29Outside from De La Hoya
40:33And a combination
40:35Scored by De La Hoya
40:37And another combination
40:39Punishing Chavez
40:40Uppercuts
40:41Chavez under
40:42Chavez is now
40:43Bleeding from the nose
40:45As well as the eye
40:46I remember
40:47De La Hoya
40:47De La Hoya
40:51Pouring it on
40:52Chavez now
40:52Look at that nose
40:54Look at the nose
40:54That's worse
40:55His nose is worse
40:56Than his eye
40:57In his last fight
40:58He broke
40:59Broke his opponent's nose
41:00Blood pouring from the nose
41:02And the eye
41:02And Joe Cortez
41:03Calls a halt
41:04He'll have the doctor
41:05Look at this cut
41:09Dr. Flip Polmanski
41:10Comes up from the far side
41:11Also cut
41:13Inside the mouth
41:14Every time De La Hoya
41:16Punches
41:16He spins right on the end
41:18And it slices the face
41:19That's it
41:20Say so much
41:21And it's all over
41:22Jose De La Hoya
41:25Oscar De La Hoya
41:27Pardon me
41:28With Jose Ribeiro
41:29The old man
41:30In his corner
41:32Exalting his victory
41:33A fourth round knockout
41:35A dominant performance
41:36By Oscar De La Hoya
41:39Over the legendary
41:40Julio Cesar Chavez
41:44Well you have indeed
41:45Been called a lot of names
41:47I guess Jose
41:47Will also fit here
41:48But you know
41:49You mentioned that
41:50As a kid
41:50The legend was certainly
41:52A hero of yours
41:53What were your thoughts
41:54As you were watching
41:55Yourself fight the legend
41:56Well growing up in boxing
41:58I've been boxing
41:58Since I was
41:59Five, six years old
42:00And Julio Cesar Chavez
42:02Was one of my idols
42:03In boxing
42:03Inside that squared circle
42:04I admired him
42:05He was a great hero
42:07In boxing
42:08In the sport of boxing
42:09And when I faced
42:10Julio Cesar Chavez
42:11My idol
42:12I was a bit nervous
42:14But then again
42:14I wanted to show the people
42:16That a young
42:18And upcoming fighter
42:19Can do well
42:20Against an experienced fighter
42:21Like Julio Cesar Chavez
42:22I went into that fight
42:23Very, very nervous
42:24Scared
42:25But anxious
42:26And it turned out well
42:27It was a good night for me
42:29You know
42:29I'm reminded of fighters
42:30When they were fighting
42:31Like the great Muhammad Ali
42:33Feeling like they just
42:34Couldn't go after him
42:35But so hard
42:35But yet Oscar was displaying
42:37That killer instinct
42:38Gil as he was going
42:39After the legend
42:40Important
42:41He may
42:42Chavez may have been
42:43The legend
42:43For the first 15 seconds
42:45But as soon as he hit Oscar
42:47A couple of punches
42:48He wasn't a legend any longer
42:49That's when Oscar knew
42:50He had to go to work
42:52Understand
42:52And went to work
42:53He did
42:54And we've got a bit more
42:55Work to come your way
42:56As we take a look at
42:57Oscar De La Hoya
42:58Coming up next
42:59Against Hector Macho Camacho
43:01Would the curl
43:02Come off of Camacho's head
43:04We'll find out
43:05After this
43:16Camacho asserting himself
43:18Somewhat there
43:20Oh look at that
43:22Left hook to the body
43:26And De La Hoya
43:27De La Hoya
43:27Look at this pressure from him
43:29And there is no rest
43:30At all for Camacho
43:32And De La Hoya
43:33With the right hand
43:34Now driving Camacho
43:35Back
43:35Another big right hand
43:36With a grazing shot
43:37Just missed
43:38Landing big
43:40Heard Pat Burns tell
43:41Hector Camacho
43:45Can only win this
43:46By knockout
43:48And he would appear
43:49To be right
43:52Camacho off to a
43:53Slow start
43:54In the scorecards
43:55In fact that may be
43:56The way
43:57The only way
43:57That Hector Camacho
43:58Can win a round
44:01That's right
44:02He has been
44:03Extremely defensive
44:04Tonight
44:05He's only been
44:05Close in one round
44:06A second
44:08Otherwise
44:09They've been
44:09Very clear
44:10De La Hoya
44:10Lounge
44:11I'll cook that
44:12By De La Hoya
44:14But has De La Hoya
44:15Slowed
44:16He has missed
44:17A lot of punches
44:17Yes he's thrown
44:18A lot of punches
44:19And he's landed
44:19Is this an opportunity
44:26A window of opportunity
44:27Open for
44:28Hector Camacho
44:29And he's not using it
44:30Well De La Hoya
44:32Is going to take
44:32That window away
44:33By pounding the body
44:35Hopefully slowing
44:36The movement
44:36Later on
44:43Camacho is resilient
44:45As far as
44:45His ability
44:46To take shots
44:46Not throwing
44:48Too much
44:51Quick sneaky punches
44:52By De La Hoya
44:54Drives Camacho
44:55Back
44:56Yeah
44:56Three punch combination
44:57They want
44:58Fours and fives
44:59In the corner
44:59Of De La Hoya
45:01Again
45:01The uppercut
45:02By De La Hoya
45:06Able to break
45:07The rules
45:08About throwing it
45:08From so far out
45:09But he turns
45:11Into the shot
45:11And he ends up
45:13Squared after
45:13The punch is over
45:14So he's got himself
45:15Defensively covered
45:20Five punches
45:21Here on Camacho
45:23Oh those hurt
45:24Tomorrow
45:25When you take a look
45:26At the guys
45:27De La Hoya
45:27Has stopped
45:28Camacho is showing
45:29A pretty good chin
45:30Tonight
45:33Tying up
45:34And whatever
45:35He has taken
45:36Some flush bombs
45:37From De La Hoya
45:38And has stood
45:40And he's
45:41Stood
45:46End of round eight
45:50Not as much
45:51Offense
45:51By De La Hoya
45:54And I think
45:55De La Hoya
45:56In command
46:13Never lets you down
46:14Make it a Bud Light

46:35The curl off his head
