00:00Main event featuring former heavyweight champion Oliver McCall.
00:03McCall is anxious to get back into the championship picture
00:06and has dedicated himself to attaining that goal.
00:16Another day in the jungle.
00:20Oliver McCall is waiting for another shot at a heavyweight title
00:24and his opponents are feeling just how anxious he is.
00:30Like that last guy that you're not grabbing.
00:33When he first went out there, he thought he was going to knock your brains out.
00:36As soon as you hit him.
00:38Good shot to the body and a right hand with Doug goes to the sky.
00:41That's a counter right hand that he hit Lennox Lewis with too.
00:44I go first.
00:45And Oliver McCall came in here meaning business,
00:48looks now like he means business, and took care of business.
00:52I go first.
00:53The Atomic Bull punches the time clock tonight against challenger James Stanton
00:57as he patiently awaits his turn for a chance at Iron Mike and another heavyweight title.
01:03I go first.
01:08I will be a heavyweight champion again.
01:10Champion again.
01:11I go first.
01:16As we take a look at Oliver McCall, make no mistake about it,
01:20he is mad that he is not in line for a fight against Tyson.
01:24Will that frustration help him or hurt him?
01:26We'll find out.
01:27Coming up next, McCall and Stanton.
01:30Right here from the Miami Arena,
01:31as Fox Saturday Night Fights continues,
01:34Barry Tompkins and Bobby Chaz will be back in a moment.
01:45The bright lights of South Fork,
01:48courtesy of the blockbuster blimp.
01:50And the action right now is taking place inside of the Miami Arena here in Miami.
01:55And for final comments on the WBA Cruiserweight Championship fight,
01:58let's take you back downstairs ringside,
02:00Barry Tompkins and Bobby Chaz.
02:05All right, well, Bobby Chaz, what about the stoppage of that fight?
02:08I mean, winning ugly is okay in other sports.
02:09Why shouldn't it be okay in boxing?
02:11George Bennett, a very famous trainer, once said,
02:13don't worry about it.
02:13Win this time.
02:14We'll look good next time.
02:15You know, Nate Miller didn't look that impressive,
02:17but it was all academic.
02:18Cut it otherwise.
02:19Final spot, I couldn't win the fight.
02:20Yeah, I'm sure there are people who looked at a Picasso painting
02:22and said, they don't look like real people to me.
02:24And then some.
02:25I'll tell you what, Picasso wasn't always pretty, but he was good.
02:27That's the thing.
02:28And the same thing with Nate Miller.
02:29He retains the championship.
02:30And, hey, as we said, a W is a W.
02:33Back to you, JB.
02:38And coming up, the former heavyweight champ, Oliver McCall,
02:41ranked second by the IBF.
02:43McCall looks to continue his way back to the top of the boxing world.
02:48His opponent is James House of Payne Stanton,
02:51and McCall looks to be an undesirable tenant in that house tonight.
02:54We'll take a look at this champion, the former champ, Oliver McCall,
02:57who wants to regain his lofty status.
03:00We'll do all of that after this.
03:03We'll do all of that after this.
03:30You're taking a look at James the House of Payne Stanton,
03:33a young man who comes in awfully confident.
03:35He insists that McCall is over the heel and that he will help to bury him in a victory tonight.
03:41We'll find out if that transpires.
03:43Well, right now in the Miami arena, it is boxing coming your way here on Fox.
03:47But next week, it'll be action that is fast and furious and fierce of another kind.
03:52The NHL returns to Fox.
03:54It'll be coming your way next Sunday, March the 31st.
03:57The playoff action is heating up, and you won't want to miss the action.
04:03The NHL on Fox is back as the Foxtrack's puck returns.
04:06Big shot and scores!
04:08Watch Gretzky, Hull, and Federov light it up
04:11as the Blues clash with the league-leading Red Wings.
04:14And the Foxtrack's puck makes its regular season debut.
04:18Or scoring leader Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins
04:21battle Eric Lindros in the playoffs.
04:24Fox's glowing puck, hockey's biggest stars.
04:27The NHL on Fox returns next Sunday, 3 p.m. Eastern, 12 Pacific.
04:34So teams are positioning themselves for the NHL playoff run.
04:37You won't want to miss it, and you won't want to miss this.
04:39Oliver McCall looking very intense and focused.
04:42No mistaking about it, this young man is awfully strong.
04:46We'll see how strong as he tries to dispatch to the challenger, James Stanton.
04:51McCall wants the title back.
04:52This will be a part of the way on the road back.
05:05It's a cool Saturday night here in South Florida
05:07as we look at the bayside view of the Port of Miami,
05:11the largest cruise port in the world.
05:13With as many as eight giant ships docked in port,
05:16Miami is a centerpiece of world travel and commerce.
05:21And welcome back to Fox's Saturday Night Fights.
05:24In tonight's main event, a man who is definitely considered one of the world's most dangerous heavyweights,
05:29former WBC champ Oliver McCall steps back into the ring.
05:32That on the heels of what was a short night's work last month right here on Fox.
05:36And although McCall reached the pinnacle of his profession,
05:39capturing the heavyweight title in September of 94,
05:42his career has been marked by inconsistency.
05:47Now I became champ.
05:48I'm going to become champ again for the second time.
05:51One man, one goal.
05:57One mission.
05:58Tyson or no one else is going to stand in my way of being me becoming heavyweight champion again.
06:03Oliver McCall is bullish on regaining a heavyweight belt.
06:06Maybe because winning the WBC title from Lennox Lewis in 1994
06:10was one of the most exciting moments of his life.
06:13Maybe because losing it to Frank Bruno one year later was one of the worst.
06:18In the dressing room, me and my people, we were talking about how we were going to approach the fight.
06:22They wanted me to approach the fight where I'd be more just a little cautious of Bruno's power.
06:29It's as simple as that.
06:30And I went out there and that's the way I'd done it.
06:32And I just took it too far.
06:34Caution is not a character trait often associated with McCall.
06:37He has walked on the wild side, even been incarcerated.
06:40He's been called eccentric and goofy, but what he likes being called best, perhaps, is dad.
06:46No, who's going to be a boxer?
06:50He's a boxer.
06:51He's going to be a boxer?
06:52No, he has to be something else other than a fighter.
06:54We got enough of those in the family.
06:56They support me very well.
06:58You know, they know when I punch and don't really fight.
07:03They know when I really give it my all.
07:04And they're looking forward.
07:06They'll be looking forward to me to fight now.
07:08When they saw me lose the title, I mean, it really shook them up real bad.
07:12And I really think that I owe it to them to really show not just my children, but mainly them,
07:19that I can become champ again.
07:21Okay?
07:22Every basket counts.
07:23Just like y'all at school playing.
07:25Every basket counts, all right?
07:26At age 30, McCall makes every minute count these days, with his family and with his training.
07:32He remembers what it was like, waiting for opportunity to knock.
07:36I had to really fight my way up to getting my chance to do Don King and the boxing world,
07:41because as far as the boxing world, I didn't think I had a chance anyway.
07:44But through my perseverance, me persevering in the boxing, you know, Don saw that.
07:50He said, wait up, I'm going to have to give Oliver a chance now.
07:52He made the most of his first title shot against Lewis, and until he gets another one, he is daring
07:58other fighters to take their best shot at him.
08:00I'm looking forward to someone making the atomic force submit.
08:04Make my body submit in that ring, you bad.
08:06Tyson or no one never done that, I don't think it'll never be done.
08:13Oliver McCall indeed has big plans to get back on top, but this man, James Stanton, stands in his way.
08:19Stanton is a supremely confident young fighter who insists he's hungrier than McCall and has the precision punches to carry
08:27him to victory.
08:28Up next, Barry Tompkins and Bobby Chaz will have all the action between McCall and Stanton after this.
08:45We welcome you back to the city of Miami, Florida on a beautiful spring night.
08:49Barry Tompkins along with Bobby Chaz, we come now to our main event.
08:53In the heavyweight division, Oliver McCall gets it on with James Stanton.
08:58They're going ten rounds.
08:59He is one of the more enigmatic personalities in the sport of boxing, and in fact, it must be said,
09:03Oliver McCall's toughest opponent oftentimes has been Oliver McCall.
09:07And now he is being made to play a waiting game, waiting for his shot at Mike Tyson.
09:13We'll get in line, Oliver McCall.
09:15And the simple fact is, Bobby, Oliver McCall is tough.
09:18He can punch.
09:18He's got a good beard, and he's beaten Mike Tyson up, albeit it was in a sparring situation.
09:24Tyson is making him wait.
09:25And the question that I have for you really is he's being victimized by his own talent.
09:29Well, you know, I said for years that Oliver McCall was one of the best-kept secrets in the heavyweight
09:33division.
09:33And right now he has to wait for a couple reasons.
09:35First is he lost his title.
09:37Mike would have had to come to him if he still had the title.
09:39He lost to Bruno.
09:40First big mistake.
09:41Secondly, all the other world champions won't fight him because they also want to fight Mike Tyson.
09:45Bigger money, bigger notoriety, bigger and better challenge.
09:49And lastly, Oliver McCall can fight.
09:51The best fight you'll see in the heavyweight division in the next two years will be between Mike Tyson and
09:56Oliver McCall
09:56because he knows him so well, and he's that good.
09:59And the simple fact is, patience has not been the virtue of this man, Oliver McCall.
10:02So what he's got to do tonight is keep his mind on business.
10:06Worry about first things first.
10:08Right.
10:08The last time his mind was off business was with Frank Bruno.
10:10He looked lackluster.
10:11He didn't get the job done.
10:12He can't allow that to happen now.
10:13He's going to be made to wait.
10:15He's going to wait, but he's got to wait patiently, and he's got to wait correctly.
10:18And when we talked to him yesterday, quite frankly, he was kind of on a down.
10:22He had talked to Don King.
10:23Don said, you're just going to have to wait your turn.
10:25He wasn't a happy man about it.
10:27He hopes he can take all that vengeance out tonight on James Stanton.
10:45Fox Saturday Night Fights are brought to you by Miller Beer.
10:49Brewed from the heart of the hops for a beer with heart that goes down easy.
10:53Reach for what's out there.
10:59City of Miami, once again, spring, just a couple days old here,
11:02and yet it feels a little bit like winter here in South Florida.
11:05Starting to warm up a little bit, though, as you look at the fine shots
11:07provided by the Blockbuster Video Blimp.
11:09One of the fastest blimps flying.
11:11The Blockbuster Video Blimp has exceeded speeds equivalent of 70 miles an hour
11:15across the ground.
11:16This year, its annual tour is going to take it to the West Coast,
11:19to the United States, for the first time.
11:24So we come now to the 10-round heavyweight bout,
11:26our future fight of the evening, Oliver McCall and James Stanton.
11:29We've talked about Oliver McCall.
11:31Let's talk for a moment about James Stanton.
11:32He's 16-1.
11:33He lost his last fight, but in that fight, he broke his hand,
11:36and he feels he's not only ready,
11:38he feels he's more than capable of handling Oliver McCall.
11:42Time will tell.
11:43Let's take a look at the tail of the tape.
11:46Stanton's seven years younger than Oliver McCall.
11:49Each man is six foot two inches tall.
11:53Weight advantage to Oliver McCall and also a reach advantage to the former champion.
12:00This division doesn't really mean a whole lot.
12:02The Florida rules there will not be a standing eight count.
12:04The three knockdown rule, however, will be in effect.
12:07Only the referee can stop the fight,
12:08and the fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
12:11And that, of course, includes the last round.
12:13Oliver McCall, all business as he comes into the ring,
12:16and he's going to have to keep it that way.
12:17That, if anything, has been his biggest problem.
12:20We'll see if he can get it together tonight
12:22against the tough opponent, James Stanton.
12:24Let's get to the center of the ring now
12:25and the introduction to the fighters from Jimmy Lennon Jr.
12:28Jimmy?

13:20Presenting to you our referee in charge of this bout,
13:23he'll be giving instructions after the introductions,
13:26Bill Connors.
13:27All right, fans, here we go with the main event of the evening,
13:32the big boys of boxing in this heavyweight special attraction scheduled for 10 rounds of boxing.
13:39Presenting to you first on my left,
13:42he is finding out of the blue corner,
13:44entering the ring wearing gold trunks with blue trim,
13:47and hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
13:50He weighed in at 216.75 pounds with a fine young record of 16 wins,
13:58only one defeat.
13:59He has eight wins.
14:01Coming by way of knockout,
14:03introducing James House of Payne Stanton.
14:13And his opponent across the ring on my right,
14:16fighting out of the red corner,
14:17wearing solid white trunks.
14:19He is fighting out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida,
14:22by way of Chicago, Illinois.
14:24He weighed in 228.5 pounds.
14:28His record includes 27 wins,
14:31six losses,
14:32and 19 wins coming by way of knockout.
14:36He is ranked the number two heavyweight contender by the IVF,
14:39number four by the WBC,
14:41and number five in the world by the WBA.
14:43Here is the former heavyweight champion of the world,
14:47introducing the atomic bull,
14:52Oliver McCall.
14:58Once again, a referee in charge, Bill Connors,
15:01now to give instructions.
15:03Okay, guys.
15:05Seconds only.
15:08Everybody's shot in seconds.
15:09Let's go.
15:16Let's go.
15:17Bring him on out.
15:23Where's he at?
15:25All right, now let's be quiet.
15:27Listen to my instructions here.
15:28All right, you both received instructions.
15:32I want you to obey my rules and my commands in here.
15:36These trunks, both of you are wearing your trunks very high.
15:40Okay?
15:40I'll be the one that decides what's a low blow here.
15:43Understand that?
15:44I don't want any noise from the corners on that.
15:47Any questions over here?
15:49Any questions over here?
15:51Touch clubs.
15:51Good luck to both of you.
15:52Touch clubs.
15:53Whoa!
15:54Touch clubs.
15:56Well, nobody blinked.
15:58Nobody touched clubs.
15:59And now we'll see who's really got it.
16:03McCall in the white trunks.
16:05And James Stanton in the frills.
16:09Stanton.
16:10And if you've heard this before, you have.
16:12Says he wants to jab, move, give him angles.
16:16I think that's what we said about Brian Laspout.
16:18I got to feel it's going to be a little different.
16:20I'll tell you what.
16:20Both of the corners for these fighters are very pumped up in sight.
16:27Stanton really was talking like a confident fighter when we spoke with him yesterday.
16:31And it was not a false confidence.
16:33Good quick right hand by Oliver McCall.
16:37But he's there to be moved.
16:39Have you seen the difference when he jabbed?
16:40He jabbed in.
16:41He jabbed with intention.
16:42He jabbed with a purpose.
16:44And Laspout did not do that.
16:46Covering on the inside.
16:47Covering nice.
16:48Oliver's bigger.
16:49A little stronger.
16:50Probably a better puncher.
16:51He's going to have to move.
16:52Get him angles.
16:52Get him tired.
16:53Lost his last fight, as you said, to Darrell Wilson.
16:55Wilson, incidentally, went on to knock off Shannon Briggs in the night of the young heavyweights.
17:00And in that fight, Stanton broke his hand.
17:03There was some question about whether or not it was really broken.
17:05But the commission doctor said yes, in fact, it was.
17:09You know, if you bruise a bone severely, it's just as good as a broken hand for pain's sake.
17:13And that's what it all amounts to, is how much pain he was in.
17:17He feels the loss in its own way.
17:19It was good for him.
17:20Says it's a new career now.
17:23Burdened in my heart, he said.
17:24I'm tired of breaking him.
17:26I know what that's like.
17:27I've had heartburn for 30 years.
17:29Just getting over mine.
17:34All right, keep them all loose.
17:36Let's go.
17:36Work it in there.
17:37Work it.
17:41All right, hold it.
17:42Tied up.
17:42Breaking him.
17:43Break clean.
17:43Oliver's call.
17:44Simply said, can be as good as he chooses to be.
17:47And there have been times in his career he's been brilliant.
17:49Put overhand right by Stanton.
17:51Stanton working.
17:51Nice left hook to the body.
17:52You'll notice he leans to the side.
17:54He got out of the way of Oliver's right hand while throwing his own.
17:56You'll watch him do it.
17:57He'll lean to the side and whip that right hand and try and get his head out of the way
18:01of Oliver McCall.
18:02Very good right hand.
18:08McCall has all the skills, as we've said.
18:10And that's exactly what's victimizing him so far as Mike Tyson is concerned.
18:15Tyson is in absolutely no hurry to get to Oliver McCall.
18:18What I say about Oliver is he's sneaky good or he has a subtle goodness to him.
18:22Not a Tyson puncher, but a good puncher with both hands.
18:25Not Rocky Marciano's chin, but a great chin.
18:27Not Ollie's speed, but good speed.
18:28He has all the things in good amounts, just not super human, you know.
18:33And he just brings it all together.
18:35And when he gets in the right move, he puts it all together.
18:37And that's what it is.
18:38It's his head.
18:42Well, he's been a terrific underdog.
18:44His problem is he has not been a very good front runner.
18:49It's tough to be the favorite.
18:50All the pressure's on him.
18:54They're holding him there.
18:55Let's go.
18:56Get your hands loose.
18:59Counter left hand from Stanton.
19:00Stanton holding his own.
19:02McCall here in the first round.
19:03Stanton's fighting a very smart fight.
19:05He's covering nice.
19:06He's keeping his hands.
19:06His defense tight.
19:07He's countering well.
19:08And Oliver's loading up a little too much because he's a bigger man.
19:11So competitive first round.
19:13End of one.
19:14And we'll be back.
19:18Second round in Oliver McCall's corner.
19:20Georgie Benton, one of the real sages in the sport of boxing.
19:23We've been talking about Philadelphia fighters all night long.
19:26We're looking at one of James Stanton.
19:27There's nothing better than Georgie Benton.
19:32Georgie knows them all.
19:33He's been throwing those gym wars.
19:35Good right hand from Stanton.
19:37Not a powerful right hand.
19:39Enough to keep McCall off him.
19:41Nice double jab.
19:42Followed in behind that jab through the right hand.
19:44The jab again setting up the combination.
19:48And Stanton doing an effective job of picking McCall's jab as well.
19:53Stanton's fighting a smart fight right now.
19:56See, Oliver's trying to load up because of his size and his strength.
19:59But right now, Stanton's sidestepping him a little bit.
20:02Not letting him hit him with anything big and solid.
20:05Sneaking his own stuff in between.
20:07These two, incidentally, have faced each other before.
20:09They did spar on one occasion in Carson City, Nevada.
20:14Each man, of course, has a different memory of that sparring session.
20:17They always do.
20:20Stanton said that McCall could match his hand speed.
20:28McCall basically said Stanton was a chicken.
20:30Wore a big headpiece.
20:32And now he goes down and just kind of crumbled.
20:35Left hook to the body.
20:36Sneaky shot up underneath.
20:37It hurt.
20:38I saw him buckle and thought he was okay.
20:40And he decided to take the eight count and take the rest.
20:42Take your stuff to me, man.
20:44Let's go.
20:47And the strength of all of McCall shown there.
20:55Now McCall's going to jump on him.
20:57Stanton does not appear to be hurt.
21:01I do believe it was a good body shot.
21:02And I'll tell you, it takes all the strength out of you.
21:09The kind of punches that last and show up in two or three rounds later, hurt you again.
21:23Pretty good left hand from Stanton.
21:25There's a nice right hand down the middle.
21:26McCall blocked hit me through a hook right around his guard.
21:29There's one move.
21:30Let them hands alone.
21:31Let's go.
21:32Work it out.
21:33All right.
21:34Break it.
21:34Break it.
21:36Break it.
21:36Break it.
21:37Break it.
21:37Break it.
21:38Break it.
21:39Break it.
21:39Break it.
21:39Break it.
21:39Well, Stanton will have a little bit more respect now for the power of Oliver McCall, I'm quite sure.
21:44That was quite a good close.
21:52There's a left hand from Stanton over the right hand of McCall.
21:56He's standing working on the inside knife, trying to get his hands around.
21:58Oliver has his hands up and tight.
22:01Got to come around.
22:04But you can't stand in there with Oliver.
22:06He's too big and too strong.
22:08You don't want to get too brave against Oliver McCall.
22:11Well, Stanton did pretty well in that round with that one glaring exception.
22:17But I'll tell you what, I'd make that a 10-9 round, because I think Stanton wanted to rest
22:20the round.
22:21Now, I still got to give it a 10-8.
22:23You know more than I.
22:26Let's get a towel under this.
22:28Let's get a towel under this.
22:29Only one thing you're doing, baby.
22:30You're waiting on him in front of the ring.
22:32Take a bite.
22:33That's what I'm saying.
22:34You're waiting on him in front of the ring.
22:35You're standing waiting in front of him.
22:37Don't wait in front of him.
22:38You know what I'm saying?
22:38Get ice out of there.
22:39You don't want to stay toe-toed with the guy.
22:42This is where your boxing ability come together.
22:44Drop down.
22:44Drop your hand down.
22:46Deep breath.
22:51All right.
22:52Deep breath.
22:53Come on.
22:54Deep breath.
22:56Only one thing you know, he wants to stay in close so he can hit you.
22:58You don't want to be in there.
23:00You see what I'm saying?
23:01There you go.
23:02It's super slow.
23:03Well, you'll see the body shot.
23:04He digs a nice left hook underneath.
23:06And there is the uppercut.
23:08Actually, that's an uppercut to the chin.
23:10Now, I don't know if the body shot followed, but he had gotten one in there.
23:13No, it was a delay on the uppercut to the chin.
23:15It was not a body shot.
23:17The body shot didn't work.
23:19There's a really delayed reaction to that, too.
23:22I thought he's another left uppercut underneath in the body and in between.
23:26Hard to see from this angle because his back was to it.
23:32They want Stan to get off first.
23:34We'll see if he does here.
23:38Stan on his bike a little bit to start the third round.
23:53He'll slip and he'll come in and he'll get his shot off.
23:55He'll take his shot.
23:56A forward shot with some power on Stan to play on his feet, which for the spotter did not do.
24:01Got a pretty good jab.
24:02Stan.
24:13Nice right hand to the body bite, Stan.
24:19Stan's showing some pretty good skills.
24:27You know what Oliver and McCoy, you never can be too sure which type of fight he's going to fight.
24:31An offensive fight, a defensive fight.
24:33There's no set formula to beat him.
24:34But with Oliver, I can tell you two or three things.
24:36You've got to be able to take a fight.
24:37You've got to be able to give him and get respect.
24:39And you have to be in good shape because he's going to be there for a while.
24:41And one thing he did say, he said, I'm never going to lose another decision.
24:45Which means if he goes out, he's going to go out in a shield.
24:48You know, that's one thing to say.
24:50And it's another one when you have a man in front of you, you can't control what he does too.
24:53And if Stanton, who's winning this round, can really box a move for the entire fight at this pace, you
24:58never can tell.
24:59Now the problem is if that last round, in fact, was a 10-8 round, in a short fight, a
25:0310-round fight.
25:04Remember, this is not championship distance.
25:06You've got to win two rounds just to get back to even.
25:08This is true.
25:09This is true.
25:10The 10-8 round is devastating, especially in a fight that's not going a long time.
25:14Although, you ask any of us, we'll tell you 10 rounds is long enough.
25:23See, if Oliver, jab, blocks all those jabs, and doesn't count them, doesn't stop them, break them down, and fire
25:27back right away,
25:28Stanton can win this fight from the outside.
25:30That's what he needs to do.
25:31Oliver needs to block and count them.
25:33Not worry about all three.
25:35If you block them, take it right to him.
25:37Like that.
25:37Count the right hand from the car.
25:41And it knocks Stanton back on his heels.
25:46And another good right hand, and Stanton holds on.
25:50That one got Stanton's attention.
26:01Stanton walks in the left hand, and ties McCall up again.
26:07Good end of round three for Oliver McCall.
26:10That's not a brick in there.
26:11Let's go and step back.
26:12Don't go away.
26:13We're coming back.
26:17There you see that right hand.
26:18Just a little short, straight right hand right on the money.
26:20McCall got Stanton's attention.
26:25But Stanton is still fighting a competitive fight.
26:27I still thought he outworked him that round, Barry.
26:30The end of the round was two or three clean blows by McCall.
26:32But for the majority of the round, two minutes plus, Stanton outworked him one of the round.
26:37And point out, too, that Oliver McCall really, for all intent, has had only one round, actually less than a
26:43round, a little over a half a round of works in September of 1995 when he lost the unanimous decision
26:48and with it his title to Frank Bruno.
26:51Yeah, the last fight was kind of a no-fight.
26:53He came in for a right-hand fight, and it was over.
26:57Winning the win column, another notch under your belt, but not a whole lot of work.
27:05That jab is going to be the key for Stanton.
27:07And it would be to his advantage, of course, to try to carry McCall a little late in the rounds.
27:12See what McCall has.
27:23Well, the crowd takes up a chant of boring, boring.
27:25I'm not sure I completely concur with that.
27:27I think Stanton's doing what they're trying to do, but he feels he needs to do to win the fight.
27:31He can't get too brave against Oliver McCall.
27:33Now, if he gets brave, it could cost him dearly.
27:36He has to be brave in certain points, but he has to pick his spot to not be careless about
27:40it.
27:46And in all honesty, Oliver should press him on it.
27:48Make him make mistakes.
27:50Left hand from Stanton.
27:59Chavez got to push him more.
28:00Make him work.
28:02Make the lighter man exhaust himself.
28:03Get him tired.
28:04Bang his arms.
28:05Bang his body.
28:12Well, the one that I have to say about James Stanton is giving himself the best opportunity
28:16to win the fight.
28:16Now, whether or not he's got enough horses remains to be seen.
28:20But he's got an idea.
28:28Oliver cut the ring off pretty well, but the punches he threw just didn't seem to be in tune
28:33with his feet.
28:35Right now, he's not getting the timing down of Stanton.
28:37He's moving side to side pretty well.
28:38He's moving on.
28:39Keep going.
28:47That's good from my car.
28:48And the damage.
29:01This is where Oliver's big problem is, he's getting low to be, like a David, he's getting
29:06low to do nothing before he's sleeping in the middle of a fight.
29:09Exactly.
29:09Stanton just did more, and with that, he won the round.
29:12We'll be back.
29:15Got a double-view point.
29:16You've got a good look at Oliver McCaw getting a pretty sturdy left.
29:19Fletcher around the front.
29:20Georgie Benton in the corner.
29:22Saying, do more, stick the jab, work off the jab.
29:27Round five.
29:33Also, Greg Page is in this corner, a former heavyweight who may come out of retirement.
29:36And Oliver said, well, if he does, I don't have to let him train me anymore, because I may
29:39have to fight him.
29:40Why does Greg Page look better as a trainer than he did as a fighter?
29:43No, no, no.
29:44He's more aggressive as a trainer.
29:56He's a small man.
29:59Work him, bang him.
30:09McCaw, clearly the stronger.
30:11That's it.
30:14That's what McCaw needs to do.
30:15Use that jab, work some combinations.
30:16Not worry about that one big shot.
30:18Not worry about the Lennox Lewis right hand.
30:20That right hand may, in fact, be, in a small way, the worst thing that ever happened to him,
30:24because he may zone in on it and tune out the rest of his boxing game.
30:28And he's a good fighter.
30:34Well, interesting thing about Stan, he's unranked right now.
30:38But before he ever fought a main event, he was ranked number 11 by the WBA.
30:42Now, tell me how that, of course, the WBA, I think they also had Simon Bolivar and Generalismo
30:47Franco ranked ahead of him.
30:49I think Peter McNeely was up there somewhere.
30:50I think he was, yeah.
30:51Oh, oh, oh, oh.
30:54Not to mention Judge Clayton in the mirror there.
30:57Wow.
31:01Good left hand from McCaw.
31:03See right here, McCaw's got to work.
31:05Bang on.
31:06Stan's like, as much as Slipper, trying to block the shots, trying to take some rest.
31:10McCaw should punch him there.
31:11Use the jab, but follow it with something.
31:13Wear the smaller man down.
31:14Don't give him the opportunity to escape and run around the ring box.
31:19All right, Ty, let's go.
31:22Step out, Oliver.
31:30And once again, Stan, when he gets on the ropes, does the right thing.
31:33Ties McCaw up.
31:37And McCaw likewise does the right thing.
31:39Leans on Stan.
31:43You know what, though?
31:44In anticipation of Stanton fleeing when the ball smuggled his own shot by leaping in open
31:48far.
31:49McCaw.
31:50See, he stayed outside and drew a nice combination.
31:52Jumped on him again.
31:52And again was the uppercut that triggered it.
31:56See, the power and the weight and the strength now start to take effect.
31:59And that's going to be a big-time attrition factor for Stanton.
32:06Stanton's starting to breathe through his mouth a little bit.
32:08And that's the first sign of fatigue.
32:12Those were caught on the glove.
32:18Headed for the end of round number five.
32:20A much better round for Oliver McCaw, who did exactly what his corner suggested he do.
32:25We're coming back.
32:26Let's go.
32:27We're clean.
32:29Discussion in the corner about whether or not they'll stop the fight.
32:32Let's see.
32:40Well, the fight's over.
32:42Bobby, we talked earlier about fighters going out on their shield.
32:47And here's the man who went out on his stool.
32:50Hey, hey, you're doing right, man.
32:52You're doing right, man.
32:53No.
32:53Then, they don't know.
32:55Nice one.
32:56If I wasn't that far apart, you know, he was making a reasonable count of himself.
33:01I guess the strength was too much.
33:02He realized it was a futile effort, but I'd say you take the shot.
33:09Well, there was a discussion that went on between Freddie Jenkins and James Stanton.
33:13And let's get up the center of the ring right now.
33:17And as soon as Jimmy Lennon Jr. is ready, we will get the official announcement of the stoppage.
33:24There is a conversation going on right now between Jimmy Lennon Jr. and Bill Connors, the referee.
33:28So, we'll have that for you in just a moment.
33:30But it was a very interesting discussion in the corner between rounds between James Stanton and Freddie Jenkins.
33:36It was clearly Stanton's decision.
33:39Absolutely.
33:39Jenkins said, give me one more round and I'll stop the fight.
33:42And Stanton said, I don't want to get hurt.
33:45And it's a conversation that was very rational.
33:47It was almost like there was a desk between them.
33:49It's a very, very interesting profession to pick if you don't want to ever get hurt.
33:53That's why I have to say.
33:54I'll be back.
33:55All right.
33:56Stanton just flat ran out of gas when he mentioned the fact he was breathing through his mouth and puffing
34:00at the end of the last round.
34:02And that was all he had in the tank.
34:04It was just that simple.
34:05All right.
34:05Let's get up to center of the ring now and we'll make it official with Jimmy Lennon Jr.
34:14Ladies and gentlemen, the opponent in this bout unable to answer the bell to round number six.
34:20A referee in charge.
34:21Bill Connors stops the contest.
34:23The winner by way of technical knockout in round number six.
34:27Former heavyweight champion of the world, the Atomic Bull, Oliver McCall.
34:37Well, Oliver McCall is the winner and I think he would have rather put his man down and put his
34:43man out.
34:44But James Stanton decided that's it.
34:46I've had enough.
34:47And McCall wins another.
34:48Back after this word from your local station.
34:53Oliver McCall has run his record to 28-6 and the waiting game continues now for Oliver McCall.
35:00But at least it's eased a little bit because he has another W on his record.
35:04A fight that was actually very close, Bobby.
35:07And that you really had the feeling that we're standing able to continue the fray.
35:11Who knows?
35:12You know what Oliver was doing was what we call slow walking him down.
35:15Keeping constant body and mental pressure on him.
35:17Got him tired.
35:18Started hitting him with the big shots in that last round.
35:20And started to take its toll.
35:21Let's eavesdrop now in the corner.
35:23This is what went on between rounds between Freddie Jenkins and James Stanton.
35:28Now listen to this.
35:28And it really does.
35:29Sounds like these guys should be wearing a three-piece suit instead of in a boxing ring.
35:32Listen in.
35:33I hate to make some shots today.
35:34I don't blame you.
35:35I'm not going to get hurt, man.
35:36I'm not going to get hurt, man.
35:40Give me one round or I'll stop.
35:41Come on, man.
35:42I can't do no more.
35:43I don't want to get hurt.
35:44Fred, I don't want to get hurt, man.
35:45I don't want to get hurt.
35:46I don't want to get hurt.
35:47Give me one round or I'll stop.
35:48Come on, man.
35:49You only got one round?
35:50Huh?
35:51No.
35:52You only got one round.
35:53I'm just letting you know that.
35:54I ain't got to go to it.
35:55You got one round.
35:56The only thing you're doing is slipping.
35:58You don't slip on a man.
35:59You understand?
36:00Don't slip on a man.
36:01Take a doubt.
36:01Just get along.
36:03And so it was.
36:05And James Stanton just sat there when the bell rang.
36:07And that was that.
36:09And Stanton, a few minutes ago, said to some of his people in the ring, I'll be back.
36:13Don't worry about it.
36:14There'll be another day for me.
36:16But today was the day for this man, Oliver McCall, once more, playing a waiting game,
36:20biding his time, waiting for his chance at Mike Tyson.
36:23In the meantime, he beats guys like James Stanton and like the man he beat the last time.
36:27We'll be back.
36:28We welcome you back.
36:29We take you down to the center of the ring where Eric Clemens is with the winner and friends.
36:34Eric?
36:34All right, Barry.
36:35Thank you very much.
36:36I'm here with the winner who is congratulating James Stanton behind us right now, Oliver McCall.
36:41Oliver, they did quite a bit of taunting at you there before the fight started.
36:44I don't know whether you paid attention to any of that or not.
36:46But what was the strategy to sum up the fight for us?
36:48Well, first of all, I'd like to say happy birthday to Miriam.
36:51Work at Nations Bank in Martinsville, Virginia.
36:53And shoot shots out to my favorite nephew, Greg, Gregory Thomas.
36:58And I hope you'll be well.
36:59And y'all take care I'm in there.
37:01I hope you'll be out soon, Greg.
37:02To get back to this, it was taunting.
37:06You know, I'm used to it.
37:07You know, when you're used to a whole country taunting you in London with Bruno,
37:12this was just no comparison whatsoever.
37:15James Stanton came.
37:16He fought a gutsy fight.
37:18He's a pretty decent boxer.
37:19You know, he tried to go down to my body a bit.
37:22But I just kept my poise, took control.
37:25And I knew once I hit him with a good shot, I had him.
37:28I hit him with a couple of good shots.
37:29And I feel confidence that I had a fight in control.
37:32Good enough.
37:33Oliver McCall, congratulations on the victory.
37:35Good luck here in the future until you get that other title shot.
37:37All right.
37:37Thank you very much.
37:38All right.
37:38All right.
37:39Let's go back upstairs to James Brown.
37:40JB?
37:42All right, Eric.
37:42Thank you very much.
37:43A little interesting to hear from the lips of James Stanton the fact that he didn't want to get hurt.
37:47That from a man whose nickname is the House of Pain.
37:49But in the bottom line, the right decision by the fighter indeed.
37:53All right, folks.
37:53Other boxing news to pass along to you, including results from Madison Square Garden.
37:58Orlando Canizales losing his IBC Super Bandonweight title to Poison Junior Jones.
38:03That in a split 12-round decision.
38:05And Arturo Gatti comes off of the mat in the second round to knock out Wilson Rodriguez.
38:11That is to take it.
38:12Knock out in the sixth round.
38:14And here at the Miami Arena, Antonio Cermenio retained the WBA Junior featherweight title with a unanimous 12-round decision
38:21over fellow Venezuelan Yobar Ortega.
38:24An unbeaten heavyweight Henry Akinwande won by a seventh round disqualification over Gerard Jones.
38:31And we'll be back here in Miami at the Miami Arena to finish up activities here.

38:53And in the main event, former heavyweight champion Oliver McCall, a six-round TKO over James Stanton.
39:00McCall wants to get back into the heavyweight title picture.
