Hasim Rahman faces Oleg Maskaev in a Heavyweight fight on HBO Boxing After Dark.
Transcript
00:00Next up, Hasim Rahman and Oleg Moskayev, two good fighters with a tough act to follow.
00:06Which athlete will get the best of that one?
00:09Right now, let's look ahead to some other sports programs coming up on HBO.
00:12Two weeks from tonight, tune in to HBO for more heavyweight boxing.
00:17Up and coming Michael Grant, hoping to become the next contender for the heavyweight throne,
00:21takes on always controversial Andrew Gulotta in a scheduled 12-round bout.
00:25December 4th, Boxing After Dark returns with junior middleweight champ Fernando Vargas.
00:30He'll be back in the ring for the first time since his July battering of Raul Marquez.
00:35That's December 4th, Vargas against Ronald Winky Wright.
00:39And tune in November 16th for another edition of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
00:44Among the stories, a look at the WNBA's most valuable player, Cynthia Cooper,
00:48who overcame poverty and violence on her way to the top.
00:51Also, we'll look at Tim Strachan, a top athlete, tragically paralyzed,
00:57who remains a hero at the University of Maryland.
00:59Real sports where nothing is out of bounds.
01:04All right, so Derek Jefferson aspires toward a trip to the top of the heavyweight division.
01:09So too now do Haseem Rahman and Oleg Moskayev.
01:12And Roy Jones, Rahman is still in some ways mentally recovering from his disastrous outing
01:18against David Tua in Miami last December.
01:20He won eight of the first nine rounds from Tua, got hit after the bell at the end of the
01:25ninth,
01:25wasn't given time to recover, and then saw the fight stopped in the first 35 seconds of the 10th,
01:30he believes totally unjustifiably, and a lot of ringside observers would agree.
01:36Maybe partially as the result of that, he was heard asking one of our people this afternoon,
01:40how tough a fight should this be for me?
01:43Does that suggest that he might not have paid enough attention to Moskayev coming in?
01:47Yes, it does suggest that.
01:48It does suggest that he may have taken this guy a little bit lightly
01:51because he doesn't know much about the guy.
01:54On the other hand, a loss sometimes does strange things to an athlete.
01:58Sometimes when a guy is undefeated and he gets a taste of that first loss,
02:02no matter how it happens, it still has a very negative effect on you.
02:06And I think that's another thing that is getting to Rachman a little bit.
02:09This is his first loss, and that may have shaken his confidence just a little.
02:14Rock's had two fights and won them both since the Tua fight,
02:16but they were against lesser opponents.
02:18Now he gets ready to fight a pretty doggone good fighter, Larry.
02:21In fact, for whatever it's worth,
02:23and we've already talked tonight about some of the background in rankings,
02:27but both of these guys, Moskayev and Rachman,
02:29are ranked highly by one of the other governing organizations.
02:32Does that mean we're about to see a good fight?
02:34I think this could be a sneaky good fight, Jim, and perhaps a significant one.
02:38But coming off that rousing fight we just saw,
02:42I'm reminded of something that Cyrano de Bergerac said,
02:48bring me giants.
02:51Not just the tall guys we showed you who were entering the heavyweight division,
02:55but giants of the heart, giants who want to succeed,
03:01giants who want to take risks to succeed.
03:04We saw two fighters taking risks in that first fight.
03:10And as Ali put it, Muhammad Ali,
03:14fighters who dare to be great.
03:17This is a month of heavyweight fights, Jim.
03:20I wonder if any of them can live up to what we just saw.
03:23Or would know much about Cyrano de Bergerac,
03:27a cruiserweight contender from the Bordeaux region, we suspect.
03:31All right, tale of the tape now,
03:32as we get ready for Haseem Rachman against Oleg Moskayev.
03:36And you can see that both guys are in the prime of their careers.
03:39Half-inch height advantage for Moskayev,
03:41three-inch reach advantage for Rachman,
03:43who likes to get his jab going and work behind it the way he did
03:47for the first eight rounds so successfully against Tua.
03:50They're both in that 234, 235, 236 region.
03:54Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
03:57Jim, there's something interesting we wanted to point out.
03:59If the new majority scoring system that they're using tonight
04:02would have been used in the first Evander Holofield,
04:05Lennox Lewis fight in New York,
04:07Lennox Lewis would have won the fight,
04:09115, 113, seven rounds to five,
04:13because they take the winner in a round is determined by a majority of the judges' scores
04:17in each round, and an odd score is thrown out,
04:20and Lewis would have won.
04:21Back to you, Jim.
04:25Interesting stuff.
04:26Thank you, Harold.
04:28And now let's ready to welcome Oleg Moskayev into the ring.
04:33Born and raised in Kazakhstan.
04:36A runner-up in the World Championship in 1992.
04:39Couldn't go to the Barcelona Olympics because of a stomach virus.
04:42They wanted him to stay in Kazakhstan and go back to the Olympics in 96.
04:47But he elected to leave, and he is now, as a result of that,
04:52a fugitive from justice in Kazakhstan.
04:56We'll see tonight whether he is a fugitive from the heavyweight division.
05:03Big, strong man, raised on a farm.
05:09Was a lieutenant in the Russian army and won two Soviet amateur championships.
05:16And as Jim said, is considered a deserter in his homeland.
05:21And just as Rachman believes his loss to Tua was unjustified,
05:25so too Moskayev believes that he was getting the better of Tua
05:30before he got clocked and saw the referee stop the fight in the 11th round,
05:35giving Tua a victory there.
05:42Now here comes Asim Rahman, and let us be the first
05:47to wish him happy 27th birthday.
05:52He's about 13 minutes into his 28th year.
05:57And since he's from the Eastern Time Zone here in Baltimore,
06:01he arrives in the ring on his birthday.
06:06We're 15 minutes past midnight, into November 7th.
06:23Just to remind you of Rahman's interesting background, to put it mildly,
06:29he has 500-plus stitches on the left side of his face
06:33from an automobile accident.
06:36He comes from an educated family in Baltimore,
06:39brother in medical school, father was an engineer.
06:42Good athlete, big man who's light on his feet, Asim Rahman.
06:46Now let's go to Mark Barrow for the official introductions.
06:52Ladies and gentlemen, from the Convention Center
06:56on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey,
06:59Cedric Kushner Promotions in association with Bally's Park Place
07:05in Atlantic City, and Budweiser, the undisputed, undefeated king of beers,
07:11this Bud's for you presents the HBO Boxing After Dark main event of the evening,
07:1910 Rounds Heavyweights.
07:22Your judges at rimside are from Holmdel, New Jersey,
07:28Deborah Barnes, from Newark, New Jersey,
07:30Quezon Cheeks, and from New York City, George Colón.
07:38Your referee for this event, from Patterson, New Jersey, Eddie Cotton.
07:46Introducing now the principal's first in the blue corner to my right,
07:51wearing the blue trunks, weighing in at 236 pounds,
07:57his professional record, 17 wins,
08:01two defeats, 12 wins coming by way of knockout.
08:05He hails from Moscow, Russia,
08:09the number four ring heavyweight by the WBA,
08:16Oleg Mazkaev.
08:19Mazkaev.
08:21His opponent in the red corner,
08:25wearing the black trunks,
08:26weighing in at 234 pounds,
08:29with a professional record that reads
08:3231 victories,
08:34one controversial loss,
08:3726 wins coming by way of knockout.
08:40He hails from Baltimore, Maryland,
08:44the number six ring heavyweight in the world,
08:48according to the IVF,
08:50introducing
08:51Hasim the Rock,
08:55Rockmine.
08:58Rockmine,
08:5910 Rounds Heavyweights.
09:05All right, boxers,
09:06obey my commands,
09:07protect yourself at all times.
09:09The cup is a little bit high.
09:10All this is good.
09:11This is all good scoring blow, okay?
09:13All right, let's touch gloves.
09:14Have a good, clean fight.
09:15Let's go.
09:16Rockmine is a big, strong kid
09:20with potential,
09:22a work in progress.
09:25Mazkaev will show us
09:27how much progress he has made.
09:30Rockmine also has a lot of natural talent.
09:35Both of these guys may look to you like plotters,
09:38but both are quick and athletic,
09:41and both want to set up behind the jab and box.
09:48Rockmine's handlers say they must find a way
09:50to take away Mazkaev's jab
09:53and prevent him from developing a boxing rhythm.
10:01And Rock has promised us
10:03that he is evolving toward becoming
10:06a more aggressive right-hand puncher
10:08and therefore a more exciting fighter.
10:13But off the first eight rounds against Tua
10:16and the brilliance of his performance there,
10:18you might not ask him to change a thing.
10:26Mazkaev tries the left hook to the body.
10:28Rock countering with the left hook upstairs.
10:32And Rock really looked good as a boxer against Tua.
10:37Showed a lot of patience, showed a good jab.
10:40He was very smart that night.
10:44Locked after the bell at the end of the ninth round.
10:47Wasn't given time to recover as he should have been.
10:50And that was critical to the outcome of the fight.
11:21He was very smart as an immense player.
11:22Jon
11:22to Ahir.
11:24Get out! Get out! Get out! Get out! Get out!
11:39Rahman trying to pound with the right hand.
11:42Misses over the top.
11:44Now whacks Moskyev with a left hook.
11:46Moskyev missing wildly with his own left.
11:49Both of these guys are throwing some pretty big punches,
11:51but I don't think either one of them
11:53has really been known for his one-punch knockout power.
11:58Well, they both set up with their weight on the back foot,
12:01by and large.
12:02Yeah, they do.
12:02They still are big enough to produce knockout punches.
12:06One-punch knockout punches.
12:16Well, one good way to discourage a jab
12:19is just keep throwing that right hand out,
12:21and that's what Rahman is trying to do.
12:26He's already reddened Moskyev's face.
12:30Whoo!
12:31And a solid jab on the nose of Moskyev
12:35as round one comes to a close.
12:38Good round. Very good round.
12:40Leave it in. Leave it in. Leave it in.
12:42Very good round.
12:44Get your right foot to the side of you, okay?
12:46Mm-hmm.
12:48More speed.
12:49Keep your elbows in and don't reach.
12:51Right foot to the side, chin down.
12:53What I want you to do is kick off that right foot
12:56and use double jabs and rhythm change jabs.
12:59You hear me? What?
13:00Come on now.
13:01Get your focus in it.
13:02Get some water.
13:04No pail, no water.
13:06You hear me?
13:12Pop the jab. Be sharp.
13:14Right in there. Just spit it right in there.
13:16Don't worry about it.
13:18Pop your hands. Be sharp.
13:20Change your angles.
13:22Give him that, hey, hey!
13:23Come on.
13:24And snap your punch.
13:29Well, you saw the coffee box numbers
13:31that showed the edge to Rahman in jab effectiveness
13:34in round number one.
13:37Significant because both fighters
13:38want to set up and box behind the jab.
13:51Both of these guys appear to be very physically strong guys.
14:01And they both have to have a good chance
14:03to have gone 11 rounds and 9 rounds with David Tua.
14:12Good jab by Maskell.
14:20Yeah, I think you're looking at two fighters
14:22with distinctly similar styles.
14:24I mean, they both want to do the same thing
14:26in pretty much the same way.
14:31Makes for a war of rules.
14:33The sky off is remembering to go to the body a little bit more,
14:36I think, than Rahman.
14:37But you're right.
14:39There's so much alike, it is unbelievable.
14:55I think Rahman has the edge in hand speed and agility.
14:59Yeah, Rahman should be able to get there first, it appears.
15:02There's so much.
15:03Maskell blasts him out of there with a left
15:05to end the exchange.
15:08Good right hand by Rahman.
15:13Rahman looks quicker with the right hand, too.
15:15Maskell seeming to telegraph just a little bit
15:17when he wants to come over the top.
15:21This would seem to be a pretty good action fight
15:24for heavyweights if you hadn't seen the first.
15:28You're right, Larry.
15:34Well, you have to put this one second.
15:36If the other fight had been second, no one would have gone to sleep tonight.
15:44Rachman beginning to work his jab more frequently.
15:50And Moskyev beginning to reach just a little bit as he tries to go against that jab.
15:56Rachman doing a little bit more body work now, which is smart.
16:01Left hook lands inside for Moskyev.
16:04Momentarily stopping Rachman.
16:06Now here comes Hasim again, cracking to the body.
16:22Rockman doing a real good job of defending Moskyev's right hand, too.
16:30Hard right hand by Rachman to punctuate round number one.
16:35And he all but told Moskyev he was going to throw it, too.
16:39Back up now. I need to hit you with a right hand.
16:44And now entering the ring is April Wilson.
16:48Who is a KO model.
16:51That means she's represented by KO models right here in the Atlantic City area.
16:56And that is all we know about April.
17:04Stay close and hook off that jab and shoot a right hand.
17:08And snatch him when you shoot that hook. Snatch him.
17:11When you get real close and you're touching him with the jab,
17:14throw the right hand straight right down the 50-yard line with speed.
17:19And come back with a quick hook.
17:21Stay focused. Come on. Don't go to sleep on me in there, Rock.
17:25Discipline. Come on.
17:30All right. Go. Thank you.
17:38Round three begins.
17:41Hasim Rachman in the black trunks.
17:43Oleg Moskyev in the blue.
17:51One week short of Holyfield-Lewis, too.
17:53And these are two heavyweights hoping to move up the contender ladder.
18:16He's coming in to try to press the advantage he thinks he has.
18:24He's coming in to try to press the advantage he thinks he has.
18:26But it made it for an exciting moment.
18:29Rachman lands his right hand.
18:33Moskyev wants to trade rights with Rachman.
18:35He's willing to take Rachman's right for the chance to throw his own.
18:39He's made that clear.
18:42Get out, get out, get out, get out!
18:48Rachman probably isn't going to abandon his structure quite that quickly.
18:55Left hook lands for Moskyev.
19:02The reason he's landing that is because after he threw the right hand,
19:05he noticed that Rachman was getting relaxed after the right hand came at him.
19:09So now he added the left hook, which is pretty smart.
19:20Moskyev lives in Staten Island,
19:23trained for this fight at the legendary Gleason's Gym in New York.
19:26His trainer, Bob Jackson, would like to have taken him away
19:29to a traditional training camp in the Poconos,
19:31but Moskyev said, no, no, I have to be with my family in New York,
19:35and Jackson said, that's okay.
19:37He's a throwback in a lot of ways.
19:43They trade right hands, and Rachman back to Moskyev up.
19:48Stop with it, stop with it, stop with it, get out, get out, get out, get out, get out, come
19:50on.
20:05Moskyev has started to lay that jab a little bit,
20:07but so is Rachman now.
20:10Yeah, Rachman should win this on his edge in quickness and agility.
20:15But he's got to be careful not to let Moskyev catch him
20:18with one big right-hand shot.
20:20Well, Moskyev has already lured him into a slugfest,
20:23which is not the best thing for Rachman, I don't think.
20:25No, he should be boxing.
20:27Although I think he just hurt Moskyev.
20:35In case you missed the premiere, we invite you to tune in for Howard Cosell,
20:39Telling It Like It Is, a revealing look at the sportscaster who revolutionized his industry.
20:44Cosell's Tell It Like It Is persona has been frequently imitated, but in the minds of most,
20:49never duplicated.
20:49Follow Howard's career from his days as an aspiring lawyer
20:53to his days as the most controversial sports broadcaster in history.
20:58Howard Cosell, still showing this month on HBO.
21:02It's the only time he can nail you.
21:05Change your angles and get off.
21:09Sharpen your hands up.
21:11You got me?
21:12We got to start piling up on this guy.
21:15Deep breath, all that deep.
21:16Deep breath, deep breath, deep breath, deep breath.
21:17What do I want?
21:18Double jab, straight.
21:20Kick off that right foot.
21:22And when you back him up with that jab, keep the pressure on him with the jab.
21:26Shorten that right hand.
21:29Roy, do you think Jefferson can handle fighters of this size and experience?
21:36Uh, most definitely.
21:41You kidding me?
21:42Gets a chance to land his left hooky to knock them both out.
21:46Well, let's not get too ecstatic.
21:48These guys are a little bit bigger, and they've proven that they have good chance, so I don't know.
21:52And they have skills.
21:54Before we go to Letterman's scorecard, just let me say one thing.
21:56I told you they were similar.
21:58Through round three, CompuBox numbers, they both threw 173 punches.
22:03Rachman landed 62, and Moskov landed 65.
22:06How close a case can you get?
22:08You can't get any closer than that.
22:09Harold, how do you have it scored?
22:10Jim, I got it close.
22:1229, 28, two rounds to one.
22:14Hasim Rachman.
22:16Jim, I thought he won the first two rounds.
22:17He really landed nice little, Jim.
22:19And that good right hand that he just landed there, because Moskov is just too straight up.
22:23Doesn't move his head at all.
22:24But Ola come back in the third round, and I thought he had to win the round.
22:27So I got it real close, 2-1, Rachman.
22:30And Rachman starting to let his right hand go a lot more frequently now.
22:34What, Larry?
22:35I have it 2-1 for Moskov.
22:40So it's close.
22:43And Harold and Larry are one point apart on their cards, and it's starting to be a pretty
22:49entertaining fight, maybe more entertaining than Rachman ought to allow it to be.
22:54There you go.
22:54I was just about to say that, Jim.
22:55You may not want to hear this, and we don't want to see these type fights on television always.
22:59We want to see a good fight, but Rachman can win this fight with a jab alone.
23:04He can make it a much easier fight for himself with a jab.
23:07Sure could.
23:08And a much smarter fight.
23:10Instead, he's accepting Moskov's invitation to trade big right-hand shots, and therefore
23:15making it possible for anything to happen.
23:18That's right.
23:18Anything to happen, and it puts a little bit more wear and tear on you as a boxer
23:23to take that many punches.
23:28But Rachman is aware and sensitive to the fact that he's been criticized for being too
23:37dull, too guarded in there, and he promised us he would be more exciting, and certainly
23:41he has been, and he takes a right-hand flush from Moskov for his trouble.
23:45Yeah, he's been much more exciting, but he's also been hit with much more bigger, I mean,
23:49with a lot more bigger punches than we've ever seen him hit with before.
23:51Step back.
23:52Nice job.
23:52I like that.
23:53He usually does not get caught with these type of punches.
24:01I'm going to get out.
24:02Punch out.
24:02Punch out.
24:03Let's go.
24:03Get out.
24:03Get out.
24:03Not this frequently, anyway.
24:05No, it took David Tua several rounds to begin to land some of the kinds of shots
24:12that Rachman has taken from Moskov frequently in the first four rounds here.
24:17And the problem with that is that if Tua could have landed that big punch early in the fight,
24:23would that have been a problem?
24:24Well, you know, I believe he's taking the right tack.
24:29He's trying to show that he can be a world-class fighter and a challenger for the championship,
24:35and he's got to take risks.
24:36Yeah, I know you like to see those risks taken.
24:40He sure does.
24:42Look at me.
24:43Relax.
24:45Relax.
24:46Raise.
24:46Hold on.
24:47Raise.
24:47Raise.
24:48Raise.
24:52Swallow this one.
24:54Raise.
24:54Please.
24:55Swallow.
24:55Great.
24:57Great.
24:59The jab is working, but you've got to keep it coming.
25:02Okay, double on it and step up
25:05Stop there. I'm gonna reach it. I know he did listen look at let's worry about the fight. Come here.
25:09Come here
25:10Stay with me work behind the jab. I want the jab low, and I want you to stay low
25:15Stay low with the jab, and I only want straight right hands and let me go
25:20Stay right on him with the jab take him out
25:36Now it is scheduled for ten rounds
25:42Letterman giving the last card to rock on
25:46These rounds are close to even and difficult to score
25:59Good job
26:09Good job
26:09Rock has an unusually wide stance
26:11Does that limit his chance to be a power puncher?
26:14No, it doesn't it should make it better because he should be able to get more leverage like this
26:18That's why you spread the legs wide look at timmy herons. He kept his legs wide apart because he could
26:23get good leverage like that
26:24Mm-hmm
26:29Right hand lands from Moscow
26:31Rockman now landing his left hook
26:37I think Rockman thinks that he hurt Maestro
26:40Yeah, I think he believes he hurt him with that left hook. That's why he went chasing after him
26:45But now Moscow has regained whatever might have been lost
26:49Step back, step back, come on
26:57Good body shot by Moscow
27:01In the last round, Moscow began fainting with the right hand and dipping his shoulder and firing the left hook
27:07to the body
27:08Landed that one a couple of times before Rockman stopped falling for the fain
27:21Good right hand down the middle by Moscow
27:25Moskoyev is starting to show stamina
27:29He's holding to a higher level of energy more consistently than Rockman
27:35Somebody's mouthpiece is laying on the canvas
27:37I think it's Moskoyev, yeah, it's Moskoyev
27:43Time! Time! Time! Time! Time!
27:46Moskoyev in those moments remained the aggressor even with the mouthpiece out
27:52Come on, come on
28:03All right, time in.
28:14Round five has been a big one so far for Oleg Moskaya,
28:19who has more than doubled Rachman
28:21and landed punches in this round
28:23and lands a big right hand there.
28:29Now, Rock trying to come back with a late round come back,
28:32lands his own right hand.
28:40Rock has really thrown some big punches here.
28:42I think he senses again that he has Moskaya hurt.
28:53Relax, guys, relax, relax, relax, you're good.
28:59Deep breath, come on, relax.
29:00I need you to breathe.
29:02I need you to get it up there for three, Rock, and hold it.
29:05You're fine.
29:05Keep your elbows in, keep your elbows in and your hands up.
29:11And relax, don't load up.
29:13What do I want?
29:14Kind of punches, speed punches.
29:16What's your balance?
29:17Up, up, up, up, up, bang, you hear me?
29:20Good one.
29:21Yeah.
29:23Come on, babe, you just got to move those hands
29:27and mix the hard ones in and just shift your angle.
29:31He's very tired.
29:32He's tired.
29:33He's wide open for the one-two.
29:39Right hand by Moskaya lands flush.
29:43Doesn't seem to affect Rachman.
29:47By CompuBox numbers, round five was huge for Moskaya if he landed 42 punches,
29:5326 of them powered shots according to CompuBox numbers.
29:56But the late flurry might have caused some judges to consider giving the round to the Rock.
30:0310-round fight, Hassim Rachman bearing down on Oleg Moskaya.
30:08Both fighters will have their moments.
30:12Blood flowing from the left ear now of Moskaya.
30:19I think he just cut Rachman.
30:22Or either there's blood on Rachman's iron from Moskaya.
30:24Stop punching, stop punching, stop punching.
30:37All right, get out, get out, get out, get out, come on, come on, I got you, nice and easy,
30:40fellas.
30:41There you go.
30:46Stop punching, stop punching, get out, step out.
30:48Rockwood is doing some good body work here.
30:50They had a perfect time.
30:53And he's able to take away some of the steed Moskaya.
30:54Yeah, useful to take away some of the steam Moskaya was developing in the last round.
31:02Chuck McGregor urging Rachman between rounds to go back to Moskaya's body.
31:07Stop, stop, stop, stop.
31:07And, Hassim showing you that he does listen.
31:11There's blood coming from Moskaya's right ear.
31:15Left ear.
31:16Left ear.
31:17Left ear.
31:17No, no, no.
31:18Yes, right, left ear.
31:18And I'm not sure why there's so much blood
31:20coming out of the left ear.
31:22Is that dangerous, Roy?
31:24I mean, I don't, you know, we don't see that very often.
31:27Oh, solid right hand from Musman.
31:28Could be a busted eardrum, but I don't think it's too dangerous.
31:31If it's a busted eardrum, is he hearing ringing in his ears?
31:36Sometimes, but that's all he was hearing already anyway.
31:41No problem, huh?
31:42Nope.
31:49All right, punch out, punch out, punch out!
31:52All right, stop punching, stop punching, good job.
31:53There you go, step back.
31:54Come on, fellas.
32:08Muskov is mostly headhunting now.
32:10He's relentless.
32:14Muskov lands a right.
32:15Rock took it very well.
32:16They straightened it right, actually.
32:22Now, Rockman backing Muskeyev up with a three-and-a-mances.
32:25Muskov have been in trouble.
32:28Rockman trying to land one big right.
32:31Rockman going to the body.
32:32Well done.
32:35Well done having that exchange.
32:38Muskeyev nodded to him and said,
32:40Yeah, let's go.
32:41Don't call him.
32:42Don't call him a guy's mouthpiece out.
32:45I don't feel.
32:48We've seen too much of this tonight, Roy.
32:51I mean, it seems like a strategic or tactical move sometime.
32:56Yeah, but sometimes it wasn't.
32:59Closing seconds of round six.
33:02And if round five was a big one for Muskeyev,
33:04round six has been huge for Hasim Rahman.
33:16All right.
33:17All right.
33:18Okay, listen to Bob.
33:19Holy.
33:21Holy.
33:24This guy, he's tired, though.
33:26You got to reach back.
33:29The pail.
33:30Where's the pail?
33:31I'm working in here.
33:31Give me the pail!
33:37Relax, all of you, sir.
33:38Come on.
33:41Yeah, sure.
33:43It's here.
33:44Chess, after you touch him with that jab,
33:47short, straight right hands and hooks.
33:50If he's in front of you and he stops,
33:51push him off and get right back on him with a jab.
33:55Rahman doing a nice job inside,
33:59something he hasn't always done.
34:02Good rally,
34:05typifying what he's been trying to do
34:08by becoming more of an action fighter.
34:11Hold, hold, hold, hold.
34:12Harold Lutterman, how do you have it through six?
34:14Jim, I still got it close.
34:1658-56, four rounds to two.
34:18Hasim Rahman.
34:20I thought Oleg Muskeyev pulled out that fifth round.
34:22There's no question in my mind.
34:23But I tell you, Hasim Rahman landing
34:25too many big right hands,
34:26too many good left jams.
34:28You know, it's strength against strength, Jim.
34:30But Oleg is just too straight up,
34:32and Rahman can't miss him.
34:33He gets in better shots.
34:34And I think that's what's winning in the fight,
34:36the three of the shots.
34:37I have the fight even.
34:40I think maybe they're equally strong,
34:42but Rahman is quicker.
34:43And that ultimately should win him the fight.
34:45That's the one advantage that he has.
34:47That should win the fight.
34:50And I think there's been a momentum shift here.
34:53I think Rahman is starting to feel
34:55that he's in control of the fight right now.
34:58And you heard Bobby Jackson
34:59trying to convince Muskeyev between rounds
35:02that it's Rahman who's tired,
35:03and that he, Muskeyev,
35:05needs to launch another rally.
35:07And right now, it is Rahman
35:09who is landing the solid or sharper punches.
35:14Keep your left up! Keep your left up!
35:16He told him that Rahman is tired,
35:18but he didn't tell him that he's tired also.
35:21He went to Rahman's body,
35:21goes without saying.
35:23And he didn't also tell him
35:24to go to Rahman's body
35:25to where Rahman down
35:27like Rahman has done to him all night.
35:29As Rahman has done to him.
35:30That's a very good point.
35:42I've seen Rachman fighting a complete fight, if a slightly more dangerous choice than you
35:50might have expected him to make.
35:52I think, Terry, uh, Moskov that Rachman is tired is actually unfair to Moskov because
35:59Rachman seems to be fresher than Moskov is, so he has to be thinking if Rachman's tired, what am I?
36:07Rachman landing two left hooks and a right hand. Moskov backing up into the ropes and seeming to wobble again.
36:14Now Moskov loads up a big right hand and misses just under Rachman's chin.
36:21I tell you, Rachman takes a heck of a punch.
36:31In fact, it's almost safe for me to say that he takes a better punch than he throws.
36:36Come on, let's go.
36:44Oh, good hook.
36:54If Moskov had a left hook anything like Jefferson had in the last fight, he could make this fight very
36:59interesting.
37:02If there were more fighters with left hooks like that, the heavyweight division would be a lot more interesting.
37:06Good job. Good job, folks. Good job.
37:07Two has got one.
37:16And in December, tune in for Unitas, the next edition of HBO's documentary series, 4th of the 20th Century.
37:22Join us for a look at number 19, Johnny Youth, the man considered the prototypical modern NFL quarterback.
37:29You'll learn how the man with the buzz cut and the black high tops became a football icon and a
37:35hero to an entire generation.
37:37His genesis from Sandlot football to the Steelers to stardom with the Colts, now the stuff of legend, Unitas, coming
37:44to HBO's December 8th.
37:47Fitting that we would promote the Unitas docu while we watch Hasim Rahman of Baltimore trying to beat Oleg Moskayev,
37:56originally from Kazakhstan, now from Staten Island.
37:59Jab, jab, jab, touching, change your angle.
38:21Round 8 of a scheduled 10 between Oleg Moskayev and Hasim Rahman.
38:34I'll tell you, Rahman is using his left jab to nullify Moskayev's straight right hand very good tonight.
38:42Every time he sees that straight right hand come, he just sticks the jab out, and the right hand never
38:47hardly lands flush.
38:48Jeez.
38:52Moskayev lands a left hook.
38:55Rahman has been landing at a high rate for the last couple of rounds for both the body and the
39:00head.
39:01Oh!
39:01Right hand by Moskayev, and now Rahman wobbles.
39:06Rahman almost lost his legs there for a second.
39:09Regained him.
39:11Oh!
39:11Karib Moskayev lands again.
39:12Oh!
39:13Rahman with the hook.
39:18They trade and trade.
39:21Oh!
39:21Rahman holds on.
39:23Come on.
39:24Come on.
39:25Come on.
39:26That's exactly what Oleg Moskayev wants and Rahman's legs are still wobbling.
39:32No, half the round's still to go.
39:35Let's go!
39:35Let's go!
39:35Stop punching, stop punching, stop punching, come on, let's go.
39:39Professional move by Rachman there,
39:41but he still doesn't have his legs.
39:45Come on, get out, get out, get out, get out.
39:47Come on, get out, come on, let's go.
39:50One of the questions in some fights about Rachman
39:52has his stamina.
39:55Right hand puts Rachman on the floor right next to me,
39:59right next to me, right next to me.
40:02And he doesn't look like he's gonna get up.
40:05No, he isn't. He's not gonna get up any time soon.
40:08Let's just be sure we can make room for medical personnel.
40:11And Dr. Coleto is right here.
40:13He may have landed on his head.
40:16He did, he did, Larry.
40:18I tried my best to prevent it,
40:20but was unable to stop him from landing on his hands.
40:22Let's get this out of the way.
40:24Dr. Dominic Coleto right here with Rachman.
40:30There is a battle royal going on out here
40:34in the crowd.
40:36The doctor is asking The Rock if he knows where he is,
40:39and he does.
40:39He's answering the questions correctly.
40:44He knows the round.
40:47He knows the opponent.
40:51But he went through the ropes, across the table,
40:54onto the floor.
40:59Harold, is there a rule that needs to be cited here?
41:01Jim, let me tell you.
41:02You've got 20 seconds when you get knocked through the ropes like that.
41:0620 seconds unassisted by your own people.
41:08He didn't get through in 20 seconds.
41:10I think they'll let Muskaev win this fight by a knockout.
41:13That's all there is to us.
41:14I have to assume that's gonna be the call.
41:15I'll tell you what.
41:16He was not gonna get back there because he was out from that one point.
41:21Yes, I believe so.
41:21That was a shot.
41:22We don't know if any ruling has been made,
41:26but they're lifting Muskaev up.
41:30Well, the overwhelming concern was about Rachman's safety
41:33and his condition after he came flying through the ropes,
41:37across the scorer's table,
41:40right past my monitor and onto the floor,
41:42inches away from me.
41:46I did the best I could with one hand to try to break his fall,
41:49but it was impossible,
41:51given the momentum of this big man.
41:55The CompuBox table has gone down behind us as well.
41:58Now, Rock is up.
42:00Rock was courageously trying to survive the round without any legs.
42:04Yeah, he was true.
42:05And there's the shot.
42:06Yes, that was over.
42:07That fight was done with right there.
42:08I hate to say it, but that fight was done with right there.
42:10He had already survived about a minute of the round with no legs, Roy.
42:14Yeah, that's right.
42:14And that's why you know that punch right there was it.
42:16And that's what I mean when I was telling Larry about taking chances.
42:19That really was a chance that he should not have taken.
42:23And you see that's your reporter leaning in from the top of the screen there,
42:29and that's Dr. Dominic Coleto.
42:32What an amazing statement on Coleto's alertness.
42:34He was there within seconds after Rockman hit the floor.
42:37With a wild melee breaking out in the back of this convention hall auditorium,
42:44the police are there in force and seem to be making some order out of that chaotic moment and a
42:54half.
42:54And we have no idea, of course, what prompted that combat as our attention was diverted by the situation of
43:04Rockman.
43:16You know my attitude about the taking of chances, Roy, is this.
43:22If he'd applauded his way to a victory, I don't know how much good that was going to do him
43:30as a fighter.
43:31Yeah, I understand that, but you know yourself that a win for him at this time is better than a
43:35loss for him.
43:36Wins are always better than losses.
43:37Right, and that's what I was saying.
43:38This is the only chance he gave him to give, to win the fight was to take that choice,
43:43to go give him an opportunity to knock him out, which is what I was saying about the Holyfield Lewis
43:47fight.
43:48If Lewis can outbox Holyfield and stay away and win, although we want to see fireworks,
43:52we'd rather see him fight the smart fight and be a winner.
43:54The professional thing is to win the fight.
43:57The smartest way.
43:58And Hasim Rahman, who knows how much of this was giving in to the urge to be more exciting,
44:06to take more risks in the ring and be more entertaining,
44:08but he gave Moscaev a chance to win a fight that he might not otherwise have won.
44:12The only chance that Moscaev had was if Rahman fought that fight.
44:16I'm not quite sure of that.
44:18I think Moscaev was holding his own in this fight.
44:21Chances or no chance.
44:23If he didn't take some chances, Moscaev looked like he had perhaps more two-handed skills
44:32and might have won a decision.
44:34Well, any question we had as to whether Oleg Moscaev has been given credit for a knockout
44:39is going to be cleared up momentarily.
44:42Hasim Rahman is being brought back into the ring.
44:48Harold, do you still believe this is over with?
44:50Jim, it's a clean and simple knockout.
44:52I mean, I think there's no question.
44:54Rahman got hit with a clean right hand.
44:56He went through the ropes.
44:56He's got 20 seconds to get back.
44:58If he doesn't, it's a knockout.
45:00All right.
45:00Well, Mark Barrow's standing by, and he's going to tell us.
45:03Ladies and gentlemen, the time officially 40 seconds of the eighth round.
45:10The winner by a knockout, Oleg Moscaev!
45:19Moscaev!
45:22So Moscaev gets the KO.
45:25I don't think that time is correct.
45:27I think there were 40 seconds remaining in the round.
45:30Yeah, I think that's what the case was.
45:3240 seconds remaining in the round, 220 of the round.
45:35Isn't that what we're looking at for the knockout here?
45:37I'm talking to the official timekeeper.
45:39Because my clock told me there was a minute and 18 remaining in the round pretty shortly before Moscaev landed
45:45that big shot.
45:46You'll recall there was a lot of action along the ropes there and there.
45:49It went far more than 40.
45:51They're just guessing because the machine got hit when Rahman went down.
45:56He took everything out.
45:56That isn't any chance of knowing the exact official time.
45:59He wiped everything out when he came through the rope.
46:01That's right.
46:04So a tough break for Hasim Rahman.
46:06He elected to trade punches with Oleg Moscaev and paid the price as Moscaev landed the biggest shot.
46:16We saw some contact in the ring tonight.
46:19We saw some heavyweight punches thrown by punching heavyweights.
46:23And Larry's standing by now with the big winner of the evening, Oleg Moscaev.
46:28Larry.
46:29Why?
46:30All right.
46:32Thank you, fellas.
46:34Congratulations, Oleg.
46:35Were you surprised that this turned into a slugfest?
46:40No.
46:41I'm not surprised.
46:43Because I believe to myself.
46:45I'm going to do it.
46:46I have to do it.
46:47I had to do it.
46:48And I did it.
46:49Was that out of character for you to want to slug that way?
46:52Is that not normally how you like to fight?
46:55No, it's not really normally.
46:57Because, you know, I didn't fight six months.
47:02I had surgery operation for my right hand.
47:03And I didn't take a turn up.
47:06I took a hard fight with Rahman.
47:09It was really hard for me.
47:10You saw me.
47:11I was a little bit slow.
47:13But, you know, I believe to myself.
47:14I said, I'm not going to give up.
47:15And I'm going to do my best.
47:17I believe in my power.
47:19And thank you, Jesus.
47:21Excuse me.
47:22I want to talk to the fighter.
47:25If he had just boxed you, do you think he could have beaten you just boxing?
47:31Or did he feel that because of your skills he had to take chances?
47:35How did you see that?
47:38He was a little bit smarter than me.
47:40And a little bit, you know, but he's tough.
47:45Yeah, he's tough.
47:46But I tried to do my thing.
47:49I tried to do my thing.
47:50What is this victory, do you think, mean for your career?
47:54It's mean that I believe to myself that I'm going to do something more.
48:00I'm going up.
48:01Thanks.
48:02Thanks, guys.
48:04Congratulations again.
48:05And thank you.
48:06Next, I'm going to do my hard work.
48:08And I will be better next fight.
48:10All right.
48:13In the corner when we told he was good.
48:15We were told, incidentally, that the referee did count 20.
48:21While Rachman was out of the ring, as he was supposed to do.
48:28And then declared that this was indeed a knockout.
48:33We saw two fights tonight between heavyweights trying to make names for themselves.
48:41Heavyweights willing to take the risks that I believe are necessary to show that you want to be a champion.
48:48Not just want to win.
48:50To show that you can win fights and win fans.
48:56We hope that we see more of this in the remaining heavyweight fights this month.
49:02Jim?
49:03All right.
49:04Thank you very much, Larry.
49:06And apropos of what Larry just told you about the referee counting to 20, we're going to show you this
49:10knockout in real speed.
49:13So you yourself can go through the exercise of counting to 20 at home.
49:19And you'll see that, of course, Rachman, by the time you reach a count of 20, was surely still on
49:26the floor and being dealt with by the doctor.
49:28I'm not sure how the ruling works here given the fact that I don't believe Dr. Coletto was going to
49:34allow Rachman to even try to get up at that point as a precautionary measure.
49:38I think he was determined to keep Rachman down.
49:40But, Roy, let's come back to the point you were making earlier.
49:43Larry's a big fan of risk and drama.
49:45You believe this was an unnecessary loss for Haseem Rachman?
49:49Most definitely, without a doubt.
49:50I know he wants to be a little bit more exciting, but that's when you have to know that your
49:54career is more important than to go out and be exciting for one fight.
49:57He needs to get the opportunity to be exciting in a big fight.
50:01Then you take the risk.
50:02You don't take the risk before you get to that big fight because things like this will make it to
50:06where you will never get to that big fight.
50:07Larry is a guy who is a commentator.
50:10I'm a guy who does it, so I know what risk should be taken and what risk should not be
50:14taken.
50:14I would have never taken that risk had I been on the uprise if I were Haseem Rachman.
50:18I would have boxed this guy, let him be mad with me, but as long as I continue to win,
50:23I would have won.
50:24And when it came time to have a showdown, then you step up and take the risk.
50:28In the earlier fight, Roy, we saw a spectacular performance by a big, punching, unbeaten heavyweight whom we had not
50:36seen here before named Derrick Jefferson.
50:38Could Derrick Jefferson someday be a heavyweight champion of the world?
50:41Most definitely, because he wasn't taking a risk.
50:43That's just the way he fights.
50:44He uses his hard work and his hard style to make up for his lack of inexperience.
50:49So Derrick Jefferson has all the tools to become a heavyweight champion.
50:52But there again, Derrick Jefferson does not possess skills to be an outside boxer like Haseem Rachman does.
50:59Therefore, if Haseem Rachman was a boxer, Derrick Jefferson was a fighter, it would make for a good fight.
51:03But if Haseem Rachman gave Jefferson the opportunity to land a big hook and went out there and fought a
51:08fighter style fight,
51:09he probably put himself in jeopardy again.
51:11And just to buttress what Roy is saying to you, the official scorecard showed Haseem Rachman, the quicker, slightly better
51:18boxer, was ahead on all three cards at the time at which Moscaev knocked him out.
51:23An exciting night in the heavyweight division.
51:26You believe it?
51:27It actually was.

53:07Biggest punch in the division since Michael Bent knocked out Tommy Morrison a few years back.
53:13And then, Oleg Moskayev, given a chance to trade punches with Hasim Rahman, and standing toe-to-toe with Rahman
53:22through much of the fight,

53:30winner.
