00:00:03The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports, the network of champions.
00:00:24Roy Jones Jr., one of the most gifted fighters of all time,
00:00:28has struggled of late to keep boxing fans enthused.
00:00:3144 wins with 36 by knockout wouldn't seem to need justification.
00:00:35But with a little-known opponent and the specter of a mega bout in the future,
00:00:39Jones looked at Julio Gonzalez as an opportunity to remind doubters of his greatness.
00:00:47Gonzalez entered Staples Center with an unblemished record of 27 wins, no losses.
00:00:51But against whom?
00:00:56Was Gonzalez overmatched?
00:01:02Now we will see the quickness and speed of Jones.
00:01:07Last Saturday, Roy Jones Jr. once again showcased the instant power,
00:01:11frustrating elusiveness, and effortless speed
00:01:14that makes him one of boxing's special performers.
00:01:18Stay tuned for our replay of Roy Jones Jr. versus Julio Gonzalez
00:01:22from Los Angeles, California, next.
00:01:25Jenn holder, D ÅŸehir, and Paul Kelly.

00:02:01World Championship Boxing is back.
00:02:04With an exclusive look back at last Saturday night's light heavyweight championship fight, featuring one of the sports best, Roy
00:02:11Jones Jr., taking on Mexican-born Huntington Beach, California-bred Julio Gonzalez up the road from Huntington Beach at Staple
00:02:20Center in Los Angeles.
00:02:23From ringside at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, where shortly we'll be bringing you back for two
00:02:28boxing matches tonight, we get ready now to look back at this special edition of HBO's World Championship Boxing,
00:02:34and last week's latest Roy Jones light heavyweight title defense, this time against unbeaten and largely unknown Mexican-American challenger
00:02:43Julio Gonzalez,
00:02:45who entered what amounted to his home court at Staple Center with a wildly enthusiastic Latino-American crowd on his
00:02:51side,
00:02:52and 27 wins against relatively unknown fighters on his dossier, the latest in a long line of largely untested, nearly
00:03:01unbeaten or unbeaten,
00:03:03and virtually unknown challengers to Jones' preeminence in the 175-pound weight class.
00:03:08Later on, one hour from now, we're going to transition you to Boxing After Dark, where here at the Mandalay
00:03:13Bay, you'll see a showcase for emerging Ukrainian heavyweight superstar Vladimir Klitschko,
00:03:18as Klitschko takes on mobile athletic American opponent Charles Shufford, trying to polish his own credentials in a move toward
00:03:24a possible heavyweight title shot.
00:03:26And following that, a bang-up, 122-pound brawl between two of the veteran professional fighters in the sport,
00:03:32Clarence Bones-Adams and Paulie Ayala, both of them super-skilled fighters who match up very evenly at 122 pounds.
00:03:40We expect the fight to go rounds and provide considerable excitement.
00:03:44But first, a look back at what Jones did in 12 rounds against Julio Gonzalez last week,
00:03:49and like many of Jones' recent performances, it once again raises the question,
00:03:53do we simply marvel in awe at the overwhelming ring skills and natural gifts
00:03:59which have placed Roy light-years ahead of most of his competition as a boxer?
00:04:03Or are we maddened and frustrated by the in-the-ring diffidence and apparent lack of competitive fire
00:04:09which threatened to interfere with Jones' ultimate mark on the history of the sport?
00:04:14Which is it?
00:04:15We invite you to draw your own conclusions as we go back to last Saturday night at Staples Center in
00:04:19Los Angeles.
00:04:20Incidentally, dear viewer, I missed the blow-by-blow call of the fight because of a mishap.
00:04:25I dislocated a hip just before we were ready to go on the air in Los Angeles.
00:04:30TV KO reporter Fran Charles filled in quite admirably.
00:04:33It's his voice that you'll hear as we go back to that night.
00:04:37Fran Charles calling the blow-by-blow along with HBO World Championship boxing commentators
00:04:42Larry Merchant and George Foreman.
00:04:46Let's take a look at the tail of the tape for tonight's main event,
00:04:49the light heavyweight championship between Roy Jones Jr. and Julio Gonzalez.
00:04:54Jones, eight years older than Gonzalez.
00:04:57And you see, Gonzalez enjoys the three-inch height advantage and also the four-inch reach advantage.
00:05:04Both fighters coming in at under the 170-pound weight limit.
00:05:08And when Julio Gonzalez stepped on our unofficial scales,
00:05:11he weighed in at 183 pounds, seven pounds more than Jones.
00:05:17Punch that numbers, Larry.
00:05:19Well, one number you might be interested in is that in a few hours,
00:05:23Gonzalez will turn to be 25.
00:05:26Roy Jones is a resourceful fighter.
00:05:28As you can see, lands a very high percentage of his punches.
00:05:32Gonzalez is an action fighter.
00:05:35If he can land that many punches or even half of them,
00:05:38we might have a real fight.
00:05:43In the power punch department, you can see what Gonzalez is up to.
00:05:47That's a tremendous number of hooks and crosses to be thrown in every round
00:05:52in that big fight against Letalo a few months ago.
00:05:56Once again, the trick is to be able to get to Jones.
00:06:01Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Butterman.
00:06:04Okay, friend, the Roy Jones Jr., Julio Gonzalez fight
00:06:08is scheduled for 12 rounds using the unified rules
00:06:11of the Association of Boxing Commissions.
00:06:13There is no three-knockdown rule.
00:06:15Only the referee can stop the fight
00:06:17in case a cut is caused by an accidental headbutt.
00:06:21We'll go to the scorecards if the four rounds have been completed
00:06:24and you cannot be saved by the bell in any round,
00:06:27including the 12th and final round.
00:06:45Seven of the last nine opponents that Roy Jones Jr. has faced
00:06:51have been southpaws.
00:06:54Gonzalez, conventional right-hander.
00:07:11George, your impressions on the difference in the size?
00:07:14Well, the thing about our contender here, Gonzalez,
00:07:21is that he's a body puncher.
00:07:23And when you go down with that height and go to the body,
00:07:26you've got to pay a price for a quick fighter like Roy Jones Jr.
00:07:30So he's going to have to pick up his hands,
00:07:32keep his left jab going,
00:07:33and do everything behind a quick left jab.
00:07:37Gonzalez working Jones' midsection with a left hand.
00:07:45Think about Roy Jones Jr.
00:07:46He's always making the light heavyweights look like heavyweights.
00:07:50And he's always doing the move like a middleweight.
00:07:53That's been his big advantage.
00:07:57Guys are just too slow for this guy.
00:08:00Roy Jones Jr.
00:08:04Jones, truckless Gonzalez with a strong left hook.
00:08:10And Gonzalez goes straight down.
00:08:14There's more than a minute to go in the round.
00:08:21That was, you were talking about the price you've got to pay, George.
00:08:25Get in, into Roy Jones.
00:08:30The good thing about Roy Jones Jr.,
00:08:32he never tries to finish anyone off.
00:08:35So you can get right back into the fight if you wish.
00:08:37Well, in the first round,
00:08:39he generally tries to test somebody,
00:08:41and then, if the man is standing,
00:08:44he'll try to break him down.
00:08:47Gonzalez told us he believed
00:08:49that Jones' hand speed
00:08:52has diminished.
00:08:55Certainly nothing slow about that left hook
00:08:58from Roy Jones.
00:09:11Roy Jones, displaying his quickness and speed
00:09:14with shots to the head.
00:09:16Quick uppercuts.
00:09:20Chetis Gonzalez with two shots to the head.
00:09:23And shook him with that last combination.
00:09:30Flashes of brilliance from Roy Jones Jr.
00:09:32on display here in the first round.
00:09:42You've got to get the hands up, okay?
00:09:45All right, take a deep one.
00:09:48Take a deep one.
00:09:52Don't make this guy intimidate you.
00:09:54He's waiting for that battle.
00:09:55He's waiting for that left hook.
00:09:57Keep the right hand out.
00:09:58Keep the punches up, huh?
00:09:59Just take your time.
00:10:00Don't load up too much.
00:10:02Let it come natural.
00:10:05Roy, everything all right?
00:10:06Keep the punches up.
00:10:07Watch your head.
00:10:07Don't get caught with a hit, bud, son.
00:10:09No, that's me.
00:10:10Roy has talked about his fear of earthquakes
00:10:13as Fran clunked it out.
00:10:14So here he delivers about a 6.3
00:10:19on the Richter scale
00:10:21with a perfect left hook.
00:10:24Boy.
00:10:28One thing, Roy has never got enough.
00:10:31Look at the knees there.
00:10:33Enough of territory is his intelligence as a fighter.
00:10:36It's not just his quickness with his hands,
00:10:40but he is a very, very smart fighter.
00:10:44George, you pointed out the awkward fall of Julio Gonzalez.
00:10:49We saw that a week ago
00:10:50with Michael Grant against Jameel McClein.
00:10:54And you know, Roy Jones has got a habit
00:10:56of knocking guys down with those kind of shots.
00:10:58Splitting the legs like that.
00:10:59That knee has still got to have a little shock in it right now.
00:11:02A little numbness.
00:11:06He should remind you,
00:11:08in his second-to-last fight,
00:11:11Julio Gonzalez
00:11:12and then Julian Lederlo.
00:11:14There were five knockdowns in the fight.
00:11:16Gonzalez went down three times,
00:11:20but still won the fight.
00:11:21Come back now.
00:11:22Keep the punches up.
00:11:22Let's go.
00:11:23So he has shown some resiliency
00:11:26at points in his career.
00:11:29Roy Jones makes an awful bad mistake
00:11:31every boxing match.
00:11:32He allows guys that he's knocked down
00:11:34to get right back into these fights.
00:11:41Gonzalez gaining confidence
00:11:42trying to work the body.
00:11:46Stop. Hold it.
00:11:55Roy Jones has this powerful right to the body.
00:11:58And let me tell you,
00:11:59that's something that can drop someone
00:12:01in the same fashion he did
00:12:02in the first round with this guy.
00:12:04He's playing the counter-puncher now.
00:12:12Even though Julio Gonzalez
00:12:13clearly enjoys the height advantage
00:12:16and the reach advantage,
00:12:18you will not see him
00:12:19try to out-box Roy Jones.
00:12:22Rather, he likes to get inside
00:12:24and mix it up
00:12:25with uppercuts
00:12:26and work to the bottom.
00:12:28He's allowed Jones
00:12:29just being intimidated now
00:12:30with his quick knockdown.
00:12:32You just got to jump on him
00:12:33and get wild.
00:12:34You can't be as good as Jones
00:12:36skillfully.
00:12:37Just jump on him
00:12:37and get wild.
00:12:45Gonzalez loads up
00:12:46on the right hand
00:12:46but he's blocked by Jones.
00:12:52Jones is clearly trying
00:12:55to put an exclamation point
00:12:57in this fight
00:12:58because he's getting hit
00:12:59with some punches
00:13:00and you don't really see him get hit
00:13:02which indicates
00:13:03that he's willing to stay closer
00:13:06to Gonzalez.
00:13:08He normally does.
00:13:09Shouldn't have been
00:13:10he didn't hit at all.
00:13:11After dropping a man
00:13:12in that fashion,
00:13:12he should have gone
00:13:13for the finish.
00:13:16But he didn't.
00:13:17Well, you know, George,
00:13:18he's basically cautious
00:13:19as a fighter
00:13:20and he believes
00:13:21that over the long run
00:13:23he can break down
00:13:24his opponent
00:13:25like a motor car engine.
00:13:29He can also get broken
00:13:30down himself
00:13:31if this guy's got
00:13:31the spirit tonight.
00:13:38A good round.
00:13:45All right, baby.
00:13:47Listen to me.
00:13:48Don't concentrate
00:13:48on your big shots
00:13:49right now.
00:13:50Don't concentrate
00:13:51on the big shot.
00:13:52Let's try to touch him
00:13:52a little bit.
00:13:53Give him some different levels.
00:13:54Touch him upstairs.
00:13:55Go down and get the body.
00:13:57Okay?
00:13:57Pull him the body up.
00:13:59And then let a big shot go.
00:14:01All right?
00:14:01I'm trying to shoot
00:14:02them big shots
00:14:03a lot right now.
00:14:03They'll come.
00:14:04Try the light combination,
00:14:06three, four, plus combination
00:14:07and then unload some more.
00:14:08actually clean the water
00:14:08out this way.
00:14:09The hot stops.
00:14:11All right?
00:14:12Keep those hands up.
00:14:14When you get inside,
00:14:15then game.
00:14:16Everything all right.
00:14:16You got a mess, guys.
00:14:17You got a mess.
00:14:18What all over the place?
00:14:18Yeah, okay.
00:14:19You got two down.
00:14:20Two times.
00:14:22Take them up.
00:14:23Okay?
00:14:24Get them in the collarbone.
00:14:29Here's that big crowd.
00:14:32Around 18,000 people.
00:14:35Time!
00:14:36Tickets at a very reasonable
00:14:40$25 to $100.
00:14:43Roughly two-thirds of the arena.
00:14:46$500 ringside.
00:14:49Come here and see
00:14:52a great fighter for
00:14:54as much or less
00:14:55than it would cost you
00:14:56to stay at home.
00:15:01Gonzalez doubling the jab output
00:15:03through two rounds.
00:15:058 of 53, 15%.
00:15:06Jones 9 of 26, 35%.
00:15:09According to CompuDocs,
00:15:10punch that number.
00:15:13Jones, a quick right-hand counter.
00:15:16Jones is doing exactly
00:15:18what his corner told him to do.
00:15:19Take the power off.
00:15:20Just laying in some soft quick ones.
00:15:23Did exactly what he was told.
00:15:27You don't expect
00:15:28a fighter with that kind of experience
00:15:29and possible greatness
00:15:31to follow advice
00:15:32on that fight.
00:15:33Thank you, gentlemen.
00:15:33First, it'll go, right.
00:15:40All right.
00:16:02That's when your thickness pay off, when you throw hard shots.
00:16:22Larry talked about Jones' willingness to allow Gonzalez, that's when you start hurting
00:16:29your hand, and those shots like Jones just threw, that left hook, right on the top of
00:16:33the head.
00:16:34Yeah, but then he's spinning, he didn't have his fists in a tight fashion.
00:16:37That hurts, more than it does, Gonzalez.
00:16:45Roger, wait a few minutes and try to get the hurt out of his hands before he throws again.
00:16:50He won't go to the party like he just did.
00:16:53Quickness and speed of Roy Jones Jr. on display, offensively and defensively as he backs away
00:16:59from Julio Gonzalez.
00:17:04This is a pace we've seldom seen Jones fight at in recent years.
00:17:10He's being dressed by Gonzalez in a way that few fighters have.
00:17:20Roy Jones tries to make a guy hesitant, not to do anything, not to create any rhythm, and
00:17:25that's what he's not been able to do tonight.
00:17:27This guy has jumped right on him, seemingly at ease.
00:17:30Usually, George, when the fighter gets hit with those quick punches he's never seen the
00:17:34likes of before, it intimidates him for coming forward as much as he wants to.
00:17:39But it has not intimidated Gonzalez fully here.
00:17:43He's patting off a little here, but he's attacking intelligently when he sees an opening.
00:17:49Gonzalez used to getting knocked down and used to getting up.
00:18:02He's going to start laying back a little bit now.
00:18:04Keep them faints going.
00:18:05Try to make him commit himself.
00:18:07When you touch him, champ, don't move straight back.
00:18:10He's trying to counter through natural strength.
00:18:13Move around him.
00:18:14Move around him.
00:18:15When he's trying to, you be there to sit on him.
00:18:17Don't move out too wide.
00:18:18Here.
00:18:18Okay?
00:18:19Yep.
00:18:20Alright.
00:18:21He ain't coming.
00:18:22Get everything straight.
00:18:25You throw, you cannot keep your hands down.
00:18:27I told you, he's a counter puncher.
00:18:30Remember?
00:18:31You're going to fight after you finish fighting.
00:18:33You got to go right back at him.
00:18:34Stay on his ass.
00:18:36Stay on his ass.
00:18:37Stay on his ass.
00:18:39Stay on his ass.
00:18:42Stay on his ass.
00:18:44Stay on your ass.
00:18:44Stay on your ass.
00:18:46Stay on your ass.
00:18:48Stay on your ass.
00:18:49Stay on your ass.
00:18:50Stay on your ass.
00:18:50Stay on your ass.
00:18:51Alright, let's bring in Harold Butter.
00:18:53Butter, to see how Harold has a 3-3.
00:18:54Okay, friend.
00:18:55I tell you, I think it's a lot closer than I thought it was gonna be.
00:18:582 rounds to 1.
00:19:0029-27 Roy Jones Jr.
00:19:02Julio Gonzalez looked pretty good in that second round.
00:19:05I'll tell you, he made that third round awful close, too.
00:19:07I thought he outpunched Roy Jones.
00:19:09you know without doubt the second round Roy Jones absolutely gets an extra point
00:19:13that's 10-8 in round one. I gotta put one thing out to you that I don't like and
00:19:17that's the fact that they let Roy Jones come out of the dressing room with only half the laces
00:19:21take. If you look at it there's an awful lot of laces exposed to him and you can heal the
00:19:26guy
00:19:26it's an all-time thing where you can cut a guy using the laces. On the other hand Julio Gonzalez
00:19:31loves a 10 ball all the way up to the top. Jones threw three rounds averaging 32
00:19:40punches per round. Gonzalez 49. The good thing about throwing body punches as
00:19:48Gonzalez has been doing, you got to make the other guy throw punches to make them
00:19:52the punches more effective. Jones is coming ahead a little bit so this could be a
00:19:58empowering thing if this fight goes more in 7-0. At one point is Julio Gonzalez's
00:20:05confidence rise as well after getting up off the transition first round and seemingly shadowing in.
00:20:12One thing about a good foot knockdown like that you hardly remember. You're going to have to kill you.
00:20:17You are not dead. Jones startling Gonzalez with a counter.
00:20:30So sometimes when an unknown challenger tends to be standing up against a fighter of Jones's caliber we might give
00:20:42him more credit than he's actually earned but he's still in this fight. Jones is starting to dominate it from
00:20:51outside. Let's see if he can pick
00:20:54it up here and take it up here and take it to Jones.
00:20:59Probably Roy Jones is able to land the hardest
00:21:01and take it up against a shot anytime you want. He never tries to finish a fight.
00:21:18Now we figure that if you don't finish a fight you can always get cut. A hit button. Then you
00:21:24make a different fight. Jones catches Gonzalez with a left hook. Has Gonzalez been stung or hurt?
00:21:30Why is he laying back now? And Jones is the aggressor. Jones is like a fox in this direction.
00:21:37He does not want to do anything.
00:21:41Jones lunges across with a right hand.
00:21:44And lands three quick left hooks at the end of the round.
00:21:49With speed in a hurry.
00:21:57Take a different way.
00:21:59Take a different way.
00:21:59Take water. Take a different way.
00:22:03Julio, you haven'tES you doused yourself? Come on.
00:22:07Don't stop. You're ready to throw fire.
00:22:10You haven'tES yourself.
00:22:12Come on.
00:22:13You trained too hard for this fight.
00:22:15Don't haveES. You can be the ass.
00:22:18Now come on! You want it? You wanna get this son of a bitch!
00:22:22See that ol' champ? That's what we're gonna work it on.
00:22:25Okay?
00:22:29Way to keep them ass up on the inside.
00:22:31Don't move straight back on him.
00:22:32Desperation perfectly.
00:22:33When you finish, you're coming, okay?
00:22:36Alright, everything is good though.
00:22:40The knockdown punch in the first round is a left.
00:22:44Jones got in two quick right hands.
00:22:47And they seem to discourage Gonzalez at the end of that last round.
00:22:52Which is why you heard his corner trying to pick him up.
00:22:56Jones comes through with a left hook to the head of Gonzalez.
00:23:00And Gonzalez falls straight down.
00:23:06The second knockdown of the fight by Roy Jones Jr.
00:23:10And he is hurt.
00:23:12And Roy Jones looks like he wants to put him out of his hurt.
00:23:16And finish the fight.
00:23:18Now we will see the quickness and speed of Jones.
00:23:24You can see the urgency pick up right away.
00:23:40Gonzalez, though, rebounding.
00:23:44Catching his second win and going back to his game plan, attacking the body.
00:23:48The third knockout, he has lost it.
00:23:48He's hurt.
00:23:49A nice kick.
00:23:50Go!
00:23:50Oh, oh I'm ready.
00:23:51I feel good.
00:23:51I know him.
00:23:52Go, I know him!
00:23:54Go, go, go!
00:23:57The next kick!
00:23:58Go, go, go!
00:23:58Oh!
00:23:59Under a wing!
00:24:04Go, go, go, go!
00:24:06Go!
00:24:09We'll do it!
00:24:12Go, go!
00:24:18that tonight
00:24:20the referee may want to come into the
00:24:29rescue this pot shot and continue
00:24:35big overhand right by Jones
00:24:38Gonzalez is susceptible that punch all
00:24:40night long after he throws a left hand
00:24:42he's slow to bring it back
00:24:45he's following Jones around and Jones is
00:24:48only measuring them for right-hands
00:25:13big left hook to the body of Julio Gonzalez
00:25:18It's so fast
00:25:23vicious epithet in that extreme from Jones
00:25:25here is another good epithet
00:25:44Gonzalez continues to post the action but it's Joe
00:25:47In total control.
00:26:10Alright, let's go, let's go.
00:26:13Come on, keep your hands up.
00:26:14Huh?
00:26:15Come on.
00:26:19Julio, you okay, son?
00:26:20Yeah.
00:26:22Okay? Yep.
00:26:23Try to run up the middle a little bit.
00:26:26Now he'll come up the middle with that left hand.
00:26:29Okay?
00:26:30There's that knockdown once again.
00:26:34Left hand that shook Gonzales.
00:26:37You saw his head.
00:26:41Guard.
00:26:45Sometimes Roy Jones fights in a fashion that makes many people believe there's one less great fighter in the world
00:26:53than he thinks there is.
00:27:08Round six scheduled for 12 between Roy Jones Jr. and Julio Gonzalez.
00:27:14For the light heavyweight championship of the world.
00:27:16And Roy Jones, 43 or 44 punches were power shots.
00:27:20He landed 27 for a 63% click.
00:27:30George Julio Gonzalez has been knocked down twice but he's gotten back up.
00:27:35Roy Jones revealed to us that he has dealt with soreness in his hands throughout most of his professional career.
00:27:43He even says sometimes if he believes a fighter will be there for the long haul he may pull back
00:27:50to save his hands.
00:27:52Could that be a possibility tonight?
00:27:53He's pulled back tonight.
00:27:54I don't think it's only the hand.
00:27:56He's concerned about his stamina also.
00:27:59He went back to his corner one round breathing pretty heavy.
00:28:03Like I said before George he's just not used to fighting at this pace.
00:28:08He's used to the opponent by this time backing off and just having a nice little spying session.
00:28:21Emmanuel Stewart also pointing out earlier that Jones is a safety first fighter.
00:28:27So if he feels he might not be able to take Gonzalez out we might not see an all out
00:28:33attack.
00:28:34Gonzalez he's going to be the champion.
00:28:36He's going to have to start putting it out there.
00:28:38He can't be careful.
00:28:40Jones rattling Gonzalez with a left hook.
00:28:51Gonzalez is like being robbed in a parking lot and you can't see him telling you to stick him up.
00:28:58That was that quick.
00:29:00He lunges through with a left hook.
00:29:03Like I would fight you but I can't quite find you.
00:29:12helped.
00:29:13He's going to take him to the right hook.
00:29:14He's got a lock up.
00:29:19To the right hook.
00:29:22He's got a lock up.
00:29:25To the right hook.
00:29:25And Lord Jevich's last fight against Derek Harmon.
00:29:29Harmon.
00:29:30And Harmon landed.
00:29:3147 percent of his total punches.
00:29:35And over 60 percent power punches.
00:29:38We're seeing Gonzales try to take that same approach tonight.
00:29:45Big overhand right from Roy Jones Jr. to close out the 6th round.
00:29:59Getting that right hand in now.
00:30:01We're hitting him solid. Let's try to come back with something.
00:30:04Second shot he'll get it. Even 3.
00:30:07His feet are still now. Don't let him keep him still now. Don't let him sit.
00:30:10Make him move his feet. His legs are gone.
00:30:13If you keep him on his heels, move him back. It might be a little better.
00:30:16Don't let him sit there. He's going to try to counter.
00:30:18He ain't being aggressive now because he's getting hit with stuff.
00:30:21Okay?
00:30:23Alright.
00:30:24It's over, amigo. It's over, amigo.
00:30:26I don't want you to be stuck in this.
00:30:28Hello? It's alright?
00:30:29Alright.
00:30:30Alright?
00:30:31Yeah.
00:30:36This dude's Jr.
00:30:37Don't get challenged.
00:30:38Don't get challenged.
00:30:39Tick to the right with the推 cuts.
00:30:41See your hands up!
00:30:42Alright, he sits very very hard.
00:30:42Semiples start on fuego.
00:30:46Got your mouth who is.
00:30:48Let's go.
00:30:54Let's go!
00:30:55friend five runs to one 59 53 Roy Jones jr that sixth round is absolutely incredible for Roy I
00:31:04mean he hit him with everything in the book that's what's happening right now I mean Julio Gonzalez
00:31:07looking for the left hook getting hit with a lead right looking for the lead right getting
00:31:11hit with an uppercut he just doesn't know what to look for it's incredible the hand speed of Roy
00:31:15Jones jr is causing a ball into clean effective shots and a clean effective punching is what's
00:31:20winning in the rounds in between rounds in the corner of Julio Gonzalez you heard his trainer
00:31:28Max Kurihara Kurihara resembling the character of Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid movies and he completely
00:31:40plays that up and we met with him yesterday Larry yeah he's a great character and a good trainer
00:31:47has his own message 56 from the age of 12 and brought him to this opportunity
00:32:00Gonzalez doing his best work of the fight so far good shots right hand to the body by Gonzalez at
00:32:06that time let me tell you those punches hurt
00:32:13and most importantly it takes three legs away from him Roy jones jr leans in with his head
00:32:19the right foot is about to take off backwards a hard guy to catch with a shot unless you got
00:32:25him
00:32:25against the ropes you gotta keep his back against the ropes if you're a Gonzalez
00:32:33Gonzalez Gonzalez laying back a little bit now fighting a little bit more cautiously
00:32:43and who can blame him
00:33:00the crowd starting to get a little restless
00:33:09you can see whenever he gets Roy jones against the rope he's able to land shots why not keep him
00:33:14there even when fights just keeping the guy on the rope
00:33:21whenever we see Roy jones on the ropes George it seems that it's his choice not his opponents because of
00:33:28his
00:33:28quickness
00:33:31you got to be foxy enough to know if i can only hit this guy when he's against the rope
00:33:35make the whole
00:33:36fight stay when he's back against me
00:33:41jones certainly a little less effective on the seventh round
00:34:05you're trying to let him tie a little bit on the rope
00:34:06yep okay all right when you shift though get you a little bit i know what your head i know
00:34:12what your
00:34:12strategy is don't shift too much without dropping something off on it okay yep all right
00:34:18i know you didn't hear a bit of bed protect yourself at all time
00:34:24punch is feeling any different here's feeling any different
00:34:27six o'clock ain't lighting up yet huh
00:34:29i got you i got you
00:34:31it's okay let's keep doing what you're doing
00:34:37this is what it's like folks we're in the corner and there it comes
00:34:50this is what's going on
00:34:50george watching what roy jones is doing to a big guy like gonzalez can you project him against
00:34:59some smaller guys like hopkins and trinidad now this guy's fox enough to fight it in the
00:35:06way division they will not be able to hit him with any sharp punches he's able to get out of
00:35:12the way too quick
00:35:14and he thinks constantly
00:35:18very rare combination there a right hand followed by a right uppercut
00:35:29he dictates the fight the pace and he throws shots when he wants and he makes you afraid when
00:35:36he doesn't want to throw shots
00:35:44this is
00:35:49anxiously to leave himself open to those quick punches
00:35:52and the question may be is roy jones willing to go at him to try to finish it
00:35:58he's able to land three rights to the body roy jones did just when the guy's expecting to protect his
00:36:04that he goes up on top of the right hand
00:36:10Jones launching through with a left hook upstairs
00:36:30Jones is directing his strategy to the body
00:36:36just when this guy starts to protect himself a little bit
00:36:38he's going to open up back on top
00:36:40that's what he's hoping
00:36:51overhand right by Roy Jones Jr.
00:36:55the crowd voicing their opinion
00:36:57I think they want to see a little bit more action
00:37:03I think his job slowed down a little bit
00:37:07you know his best shot was that earlier touch
00:37:09in the beginning of the fight
00:37:11and I don't think he's going to get any more powerful
00:37:13as the fight goes on
00:37:14he is not the biggest guy for the light heavyweight division
00:37:17so you don't expect that knockout power in the latter round
00:37:20that kind of difference he's giving Gonzalez
00:37:22will make you sit on the stool and not get up
00:37:39he won't be going anywhere
00:37:40Gonzalez told us
00:37:41he won't be going anywhere
00:37:43and he isn't
00:37:44still alive here in the eighth round
00:37:56he's not too many
00:37:57he won't get many punches anymore
00:37:59alright?
00:38:00now you can get to him if you wanted to
00:38:03it's all up to you now
00:38:04come on
00:38:06you can get to him
00:38:09think positive
00:38:09come on
00:38:10come on
00:38:10hit the sandwich
00:38:12you're close enough to throw it right now
00:38:13throw it
00:38:14and get down
00:38:16number three
00:38:17okay?
00:38:18you're delaying
00:38:20you're delaying one second
00:38:21don't delay any punches
00:38:23let it go
00:38:24let it go
00:38:25let him go
00:38:26you know what?
00:38:27you gotta clean this up
00:38:28you're making too much of a lot
00:38:29follow him
00:38:30follow him
00:38:39let's go
00:38:41let's go
00:38:41let's go
00:38:41let's go
00:38:42let's go
00:38:43the question that his trainer really is asking Gonzalez is
00:38:47let's go
00:38:49let's go
00:38:50have you decided
00:38:50to merely survive
00:38:53is this fight over?
00:38:55or you still have it in you
00:38:57to go for a win
00:39:04let's go
00:39:05let's go
00:39:05let's go
00:39:06let's go
00:39:06let's go
00:39:09let's go
00:39:09opponent is fresh perhaps a little hopeful he comes to jones
00:39:15jones begins to pepper him the opponent backs off
00:39:19jones takes his time to break him down and we get rounds like we
00:39:25just did
00:39:34larry is this the kind of fight that is going to endear
00:39:39jones is sitting in terms of roy believing he should be pound to
00:39:44ground the best fighter in the world
00:39:48well first half of the fight he may have given his critics
00:39:53something to think about uh not that they wanted to put him
00:39:59above trinidad and moseley but that at 32 years of age he still brings
00:40:04something to the party that's very special you see how the last six rounds
00:40:15go
00:40:26two uppercuts from roy jones
00:40:30he sneaks in another quick one there with the right hand
00:40:33and then goes to work with the right hand
00:40:44the fighter like gonzalez just stays in the fight there's always something that can
00:40:49happen if you just keep throwing punches
00:41:00corner told him not to wait just do what you're going to do
00:41:03don't faint it throw punches
00:41:07george you're speaking from first-hand expertise
00:41:10michael morrow fight he just got a throw punch can't wait for a quick fighter to get in the position
00:41:22the johns looks a little gauged
00:41:26johns now starting to heat up as the ninth round comes to a quarter and he ran into the right
00:41:33hand himself
00:41:33and he's going to get out of the right hand
00:41:43winds up with two left hooks
00:41:46gonzalez comes right back and shows
00:41:49and gonzalez exchanging power to end the ninth round
00:42:00that's what i'm talking about
00:42:02where to give me the my angles on the point
00:42:03where to keep them turning
00:42:05okay we're going in the two
00:42:07that's what i'm talking about
00:42:10let's get a little bit of that end every once in a while
00:42:12give me some deep breath don't chop
00:42:15all right
00:42:18flick that i'm trying to throw them up now give me a little of that stuff from you okay
00:42:21thank you
00:42:21the way was
00:42:22take your point
00:42:23give them the point
00:42:24come on
00:42:26whack them good in the way
00:42:27drop that son of a bitch
00:42:29give them in the way
00:42:36get them in the body
00:42:42all right let's go
00:42:45there you see the he threatens a bolo punch and comes across with a right hand
00:42:54not like too many other punches you've seen thrown
00:42:58lifetime
00:43:08roy jones is so talented
00:43:11has so much skill
00:43:13but it just depends on how much he wants to put on display
00:43:16let's bring in harold to see how he has it through nine okay friend eight for eight rounds to one
00:43:2189-80 roy jones jr give him an extra point the rounds one and five for the back downs
00:43:27and i tell you the rest of the rounds he's just pulling out all the tricks
00:43:30do you notice where he went south quarter last round
00:43:37jones tried to pick up the pace in the last round as well harold landing 21 of 36 power shots
00:43:44at a 58 percent flip incidentally
00:43:49orio gonzalez has never scored a knockdown
00:43:53it would appear he needs a knockout to win the fight
00:44:00roy jones has been able to land a good body shot throughout this fight
00:44:03which doesn't leave gonzalez with a lot of power for the latter round
00:44:14and that is the jones staple wear you down wear you down work the body break you down
00:44:28and as he says he likes to get his fighters to quit
00:44:37gonzalez looking for one good shot you're not going to get it you must throw your hands let your hands
00:44:43go
00:45:08the buildup for the fight
00:45:11And he has suffered from the big right hand from Jones and he comes back with a left hook
00:45:25Gonzales should just say look this guy's hit me with his best shot
00:45:28I'm just going to mix it up with him and throw something with him
00:45:31If you're going to get hit anyway you may as well be throwing shots
00:45:42Roy Jones has only been down once in his career
00:45:47Bryce knocked down by Lee Deval
00:45:49In the fight he's won is going away
00:45:57It's hard to imagine that he can be knocked out to lose this fight
00:46:05We talked about Roy Jones' status on the pound for pound list
00:46:09Larry
00:46:12Tell me yours
00:46:14Well here's a look a personal look at the pound for pound
00:46:17I've jumped Felix Trinidad out of Shane Mosley
00:46:20Because Trinidad is fighting the best fighters out there one after another
00:46:26Roy Jones believes that he should be number one forever
00:46:30Because he once was and he hasn't lost
00:46:32But this is a what have you done for us lately kind of a show
00:46:38Bernard Hopkins has defended his middleweight title 13 times
00:46:43Oscar Delahoy
00:46:47Mayweather, Barrera, Morales, Park Rye, and Vargas
00:46:51Finish my top 10
00:47:05Manny Pacquiao
00:47:08Beating Lelo La Guava
00:47:09On the Oscar Delahoya card
00:47:13Back in June
00:47:14Making an appearance on TVKO
00:47:17Sneaking into Larry's top 10
00:47:19I'm a fan and a fan and a little boy
00:47:22I'm a fan of Camela
00:47:29A fan of Ricard
00:47:30I'm a fan of the fifth
00:47:38I love Camela
00:47:44I'm a fan of Ricard
00:47:46I love Camela
00:47:49That's his only change. Jones threw only 16 punches in the 10th and landed 12. Slap to the body of
00:48:01Julio Gonzalez.
00:48:14All right, stop, stop. Nice and relaxed. Back up.
00:48:26All right, hold it, hold it, hold it.
00:48:27For Roy Jones, the crowd didn't applaud him in the first place, so he shouldn't be concerned about the boos.
00:48:37Quite frankly, he's dealt with this in those past 5, 6, 7 fights.
00:48:46The crowd and critics have felt that Roy did enough to win.
00:48:52Not enough to put on an impressive showing.
00:48:56He constantly moves to Gonzalez left.
00:49:00This guy's got no chance to put his feet down in a position to throw a good shot.
00:49:26That's what he's going to do and get out of the way.
00:49:29Put his left foot on the other side of the left foot of Gonzalez.
00:49:40The camp of Julio Gonzalez thought Roy Jones would run the entire fight.
00:49:46Well, he's starting to do that now. Except spurts like that.
00:49:52If he's so much quicker with his hands, why doesn't he just stand there and go with Gonzalez?
00:49:58Is he taking too much of a risk, George? Or that's just not who he is?
00:50:01Of course not, G-V-V-V-V-V-V-V-V-V-V-V-V.
00:50:15Got one more. One more. Touching. Don't be touched. That's all I want.
00:50:21Okay?
00:50:22Last one.
00:50:24Okay.
00:50:25Alright.
00:50:26Three minutes.
00:50:27Three minute drill.
00:50:28Alright?
00:50:29I need to get away with you.
00:50:30So, tomatela.
00:50:31Alright.
00:50:31Three minute drill.
00:50:32Alright?
00:50:34Tighten up the ship.
00:50:35Okay?
00:50:36Alright.
00:50:37Last one, baby.
00:50:39Let's shine.
00:50:39Let's shine.
00:50:44Come on real good, dog.
00:50:46Okay.
00:50:47Let's go.
00:50:48Get inside.
00:50:49Bang.
00:50:50Bang.
00:50:50One, two.
00:50:51Let's go.
00:50:52Every time you shoot, lift your hands.
00:50:54Every time you shoot, lift your hands.
00:50:56You get away.
00:50:57Right here.
00:50:57Right here.
00:51:07Will Roy Jones try to close the show?
00:51:13Or will the bell ring once again?
00:51:27Come on.
00:51:28Come on.
00:51:32Come on.
00:51:32Come on.
00:51:32Come on.
00:51:32Come on.
00:51:32Roy Jones.
00:51:33Right foot is just out there.
00:51:34Ready to take off.
00:51:36More so than to hit you.
00:51:38He's ready to take off.
00:51:39You mean take off in the backward direction?
00:51:42Let's get out of here.
00:51:46He's got the power.
00:51:48He's got the connection.
00:51:50Connection rate.
00:51:50He just doesn't want to do it.
00:51:52Well, what he says is, I'm not a, I'm gonna hit you and you're gonna hit me kind of a
00:51:57fighter.
00:52:03So that back foot is always ready to retreat.
00:52:08George, we talked about it at the beginning of the fight.
00:52:12A possible mega fight looms for Roy Jones.
00:52:26Michael Young-
00:52:27Hey, Tomlin?
00:52:29Who's going to give FIFA 5 to 가능 if he's getting through the offensive position?
00:52:32Back-up.
00:52:39And, Roll released with Chase Ladd…
00:52:42He's got nearly out of here.
00:52:45some real style.
00:52:50I'm sorry to leave you out there like that.
00:52:55There's so many fans here.
00:53:13Roy Jones will tell you his job is strictly to win the fight.
00:53:19And the build up to this fight.
00:53:22Big right hand crumples Gonzalez in the 12th round.
00:53:29George out of the right bat.
00:53:31Let's see if he goes for the finish now.
00:53:34Got about 30 seconds left.
00:53:36Will he pepper and pepper and pepper?
00:53:39Or will he give us something to write home about?
00:53:48Jones down.
00:53:51Trying to do just that.
00:53:53But Gonzalez is right there for battle.
00:53:55And he's wobbled.
00:53:57Gonzalez is wobbled.
00:53:59Five seconds for man.
00:54:04Roy Jones Jr. goes 12 rounds with the unknown Julio Gonzalez.
00:54:10What it means in the future, the fans will decide.
00:54:14Well, Roy Jones, Gonzalez got knocked down.
00:54:17And it was he who attacked Roy Jones.
00:54:22To make it look nice.
00:54:24Come lead, baby!
00:54:26Come on.
00:54:27Come on.
00:54:31Come on.
00:54:31Come on.
00:54:32Come on.
00:54:33Come on.
00:54:35Jones trying to turn it on.
00:54:38To end the show, landing 20 of 26 power shots.
00:54:44Let him in.
00:54:47Let him in.
00:54:47Let him in.
00:54:47Let him in.
00:54:47To at least please the crowd.
00:54:50Let him in.
00:54:50Let him in.
00:54:53Let him in.
00:54:55Let him in.
00:54:56Let him in.
00:55:00Let him in.
00:55:07Come on.
00:55:08Let him in.
00:55:09Let him in.
00:55:14All right.
00:55:15So throughout the fight.
00:55:18We'll take a look at the pivotal point.
00:55:20Knockdown in round one.
00:55:23The strong left hook to the head.
00:55:26Then in the fifth ground.
00:55:28Jones drops Gonzales again.
00:55:31With a short left hook.
00:55:36And finally what we just saw, another left hand but the overhand right that Gonzales
00:55:44was susceptible to the entire fight, brings him to the canvas for a third time.
00:55:58Pretty quiet here in the Staples Center George.
00:56:20All right let's send it up to Michael Buffer with the official decision.
00:56:26Ladies and gentlemen here in Staples Center Los Angeles California we go to the Budweiser
00:56:31score cards.
00:56:32Robert Byrd scores the ballot 119 to 106.
00:56:37Larry Rosadia scores it 118 to 107.
00:56:42Peter Tremendera scores it 119 to 106.
00:56:46All for the winner by unanimous decision and still the undisputed light heavyweight champion
00:56:54of the world Roy Jones Jr.
00:57:03We bring you back to ringside at the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas where shortly
00:57:07we will transition you to boxing after dark.
00:57:10Meanwhile here with HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant and boxing after dark expert commentator
00:57:14Emmanuel Stewart final comments on Roy Jones performance last Saturday night.
00:57:24Just as was the case in the arena response in mass media to Jones' performance wildly mixed.
00:57:31Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times derisive in his column the following day pound for pound.
00:57:36Roy Jones is the world's best dancer, sprinter, poser, rapper.
00:57:41Plaschke dismissing Jones from the boxing pound for pound sweepstakes which he occupies along with Shane Mosley and Felix Trinidad.
00:57:48Meanwhile, House of Boxing columnist Michael Katz very critical of Jones at times in the past.
00:57:54This time responding to those who booed saying the crowd was wrong.
00:57:58Very wrong.
00:57:59Katz in the unusual position of defending Jones.
00:58:02Larry Merchant, how is it that a fighter as skilled and as dominant as Roy Jones arouses so much criticism
00:58:07even booing from fans who bought tickets?
00:58:09The reaction would be the same, Jim, if a Bruce Springstring or a Puff Daddy were to close the show
00:58:17with Mary had a little lamb or twinkle twinkle little star.
00:58:22Jones' problem is that instead of building toward a Socko climax, he starts out Socko and descends into a run
00:58:33out the clock anti-climax.
00:58:35Because he believes that perfection is not getting hit or taking what he calls foolish risks.
00:58:43The crowd, of course, wants action and drama.
00:58:46And it expects in its elite dominant champions that they will not try to run out the clock, but punch
00:58:54out the clock.
00:58:55As Felix Trinidad and Shane Mosley always try to do.
00:59:00If Roy Jones were Felix Trinidad, he wouldn't move up to fight Roy Jones.
00:59:07He'd move down to fight somebody who is a lesser risk.
00:59:11Roy Jones is boxing's version of a compassionate conservative.
00:59:16And not that popular for his compassionate conservative stance.
00:59:20But you wonder how much the crowd's response would be mitigated by one big career-redefining performance.
00:59:26And maybe that performance is coming, Emanuel Stewart, because it's everyone's expectation that Roy Jones will at least negotiate to
00:59:33fight the winner of the September 15 middleweight showdown between Felix Trinidad and Bernard Hopkins in New York.
00:59:38To the surprise of many of us, I know yourself included, Trinidad here in Vegas is a 3-1 favorite
00:59:44at this moment to beat Bernard Hopkins.
00:59:46But regardless of the odds, based on what you saw of Roy last Saturday night, is it a viable risk
00:59:51for a Felix Trinidad if he can get past Hopkins to go to 168 pounds and chase Roy?
00:59:56First, I think it's a good question. If he can get past Hopkins. Hopkins is a big threat.
01:00:01And I'm more concerned about him getting past Hopkins at this stage than fighting Roy possibly.
01:00:05But Roy Jones is not that big a threat in terms of weight with Felix, simply because Roy doesn't fight
01:00:10physical anymore.
01:00:11The last time he came out and was very aggressive was when he fought Vinnie Parzanza and Montel Griffin.
01:00:17He came out looking for a knockout in those fights.
01:00:19Recently, he's been more concerned to sit back and win his fight as safe as he can.
01:00:22So, therefore, I don't think the weight would be that big a factor.
01:00:25And in terms of style, Trinidad is exactly the fighter that fans would want to see in against Jones because
01:00:31he'll make Jones go to war, right?
01:00:34Definitely. When he fights Felix Trinidad, if he fights Trinidad, he's going to have to go to another level.
01:00:38I think it's going to bring out the best in Roy Jones or Roy Jones will be defeated.
01:00:42Roy Jones cannot win against top caliber fighters fighting the safety fight.
01:00:46If he had to open up more and put combinations together rather than one punch at a time,
01:00:51Gonzalez would have been an easy knockout victory for him.
01:00:53But he elected to only throw one punch because throwing two or three that he might have committed himself
01:00:58and he may have gotten hit in the process.
01:01:00But if he comes out and puts punches together, you're going to see a good Roy Jones and you'll see
01:01:03a good fight.
01:01:04So the next stop in Jones' career is a stop that Jones won't even make.
01:01:08September 15, Madison Square Garden in New York, when Trinidad fights Hopkins for the middleweight championship
01:01:13and the chance perhaps to go up and meet Roy Jones at 168 pounds.
01:01:18That's the button on this story for the time being.
01:01:20In a moment, we're going to transition you to boxing after dark.
01:01:23We're here at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
01:01:25Heavyweight Vladimir Klitschko of the Ukraine will be fighting Charles Shuford of the United States
