00:00Sunday night, right here on Fox Sports Net, at 7 o'clock.
00:05A couple of guys at our main event, Rich, very familiar with one another.
00:08Larry Holmes, James Bonecrusher Smith, fought 15 years ago.
00:12Holmes was champ. Smith was just a youngster in those days.
00:15It was a good fight. Holmes was the winner.
00:17So you have to ask the question, why does Larry Holmes do it?
00:20Maybe it's just for the entertainment value.
00:27At 49 years young, Larry Holmes seems to have changed
00:30from the angry young man that got little respect as the heavyweight champ.
00:34I'm just satisfied for where I'm at, for what my life has taken me so far.
00:39I'm just satisfied, and I have nothing really to prove.
00:43And I let people accept me as I am or don't accept me at all.
00:46If they don't accept me, so what? I don't really care.
00:49For years, Holmes did care.
00:51His ability was always questioned, even after beating Ken Norton in 1978
00:55to become the WBC heavyweight champ.
00:58My legs were too small. I was a common copy of Muhammad Ali.
01:01I shouldn't have been the heavyweight champion of the world,
01:03but I proved them wrong.
01:05Dedication, discipline, and hard work.
01:07I showed the people that I could be the heavyweight champion of the world.
01:11And not only could be that, but I held that position for 70 and a half years,
01:15longer than any boxing person in the world in history,
01:20except for the brown bummer, Joe Lewis.
01:22So I proved all my critics wrong.
01:25During those seven and a half years,
01:27Holmes came across one of his toughest fights
01:29in a relatively inexperienced former prison guard,
01:32James Bonecrusher Smith.
01:34Bonecrusher was strong, big, muscular, you know, felt real good.
01:39Punches decent real hard and awkward.
01:42Came in with his eyes open wide, like he wanted to scare somebody.
01:45But back then, you couldn't scare me.
01:47I was crazy.
01:47I didn't care.
01:48I just wanted to win the title.
01:49I just wanted to be champion.
01:51Today, Holmes says that his focus has changed.
01:53It's not just about being the champ or even proving the critics wrong.
01:57I don't want to be called the greatest.
01:59I don't want to be said one.
02:00If you say one of, I'm fine.
02:01I think all athletes say, well, I was one of, you know, one of.
02:05As long as you're one of, it's okay.
02:07Should be satisfaction to your ego, you know, if you have one.
02:10If you don't have one, that's even better yet.
02:13And I would say, take with the ego and give me the money.
02:16With his nightclubs and real estate investments,
02:18Larry Holmes has made his hard-earned boxing dollars
02:20work just as hard outside the ring in his hometown of Easton, Pennsylvania.
02:24And just like a great prize fighter in the ring,
02:27Holmes continues to keep his guard up.
02:29I don't have to fight for money.
02:31I fight for money because I like fighting,
02:33and I'm getting paid to do it.
02:35And one of the things money helps me do when I fight
02:38is not bother what I got saved.
02:40And therefore, you know, I have my buildings and my business and stuff,
02:43and they all paid off, and that's why I fight.
02:46Because if I'm using what I've saved,
02:49then I'm going to put a hole into what I want.
02:52It's up to fight fans and boxing historians
02:54as to where he will eventually end up in the chronicles of boxing.
02:57But Holmes already knows where he stands.
02:59My book, my story's been told.
03:02Now it's another story, another chapter.
03:06And I don't think that's going to affect any.
03:08They might read that Larry Holmes stayed too long,
03:10Larry Holmes got old.
03:11They might, you know, another chapter.
03:15Well, another chapter in a book that just keeps going on, going on.
03:20Tonight, the latest chapter features Larry Holmes
03:22against a guy by the name of Bonecrusher Smith,
03:24another guy who's really not out of the mold
03:26of what you think of as a heavyweight boxing champion.
03:29He's a college graduate.
03:30He didn't start until he was 28 years of age.
03:33Very interesting story waiting to be told.
03:38The sound of the name, James Bonecrusher Smith, strikes fear.
03:45And now we have a scripture reading from Pastor Snead.
03:51Could this be the same man, the former heavyweight world champion,
03:54the first fighter to take Iron Mike Tyson 12 championship rounds?
03:58Well, boxing helped make me famous.
04:00Being able to punch with the right hand especially
04:03have made me famous.
04:06But I also have a degree in business,
04:08and I'm in the process of establishing daycares
04:11for the children of our country.
04:14With a closer look, we see not just a boxer
04:17who pounds other men into submission,
04:19but a renaissance man of the ring.
04:21An associate pastor at his church,
04:23James Smith, integrates both sides of his life.
04:26Part of our training was at Hope Christian Outreach Center.
04:30And we felt like a good way to get people to the center
04:34was to come out and watch me train.
04:36So once they knew where I was training,
04:39we also invited them to come back on Sunday
04:41to join service with us.
04:43Growing up on a farm in North Carolina,
04:46the Smith family attended church on Sundays.
04:48But back then, boxing was not a part of the ritual.
04:51Played basketball in high school and college,
04:54show university.
04:55And then, you know, I spent time in the military
04:57and I just walked in the gym one day
05:00and the boxing coach was in the gym.
05:03And I walked in there to play basketball.
05:04And he said, would you like to play?
05:06Would you try out for the team?
05:07And I said, well, no.
05:10So he insisted, and I tried out for the team,
05:13got involved in it.
05:14And the first guy I fought him knocked out.
05:17From amateur to professional at 28 years old,
05:20Smith skyrocketed to top contender status
05:22and got a shot at the championship in just three years
05:25against the undefeated Larry Holmes in 1984.
05:29What I was basically known from the Larry Holmes fight is,
05:32I was really inexperienced.
05:33I was an older guy because I started out at 28.
05:36But fighting in Las Vegas with 15 fights,
05:40Larry had been world champion for like four or five years,
05:44had beat Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton, all the guys.
05:47And it was a real tough experience for me.
05:50I always refer it back to being placed in the lion's den
05:54with a BB gun, and I was able to hang in there for 12 hours.
05:58Smith did more than shoot BBs that night.
06:01Smith put on a great show.
06:03He knew then that he could fight and beat the best.
06:05Two years later, a second chance at the heavyweight crown
06:08came unexpectedly knocking.
06:09Got a call from Don King on a seven-day notice,
06:13and I was ready to, you know,
06:14and I went up to Madison Square Garden.
06:16First time ever fighting there.
06:18And on the first round knockout,
06:21I stopped Wooden Spoon and became the WBA heavyweight champion.
06:25And because I did that,
06:27I was the first college graduate to ever win the heavyweight championships.
06:31Heavyweight champion, college graduate, church pastor.
06:34It is the blending of the many streams
06:36in James Bonecrusher Smith's life
06:38that bring him to this place tonight.
06:41Larry Holmes is considered a legend.
06:42I mean, he beat Muhammad Ali,
06:44and a lot of people think Muhammad Ali
06:46was the greatest fighter of all time.
06:48So you have to, when you look back at Larry Holmes' record,
06:51you have to place him in the top five at least.
06:54And he beat Muhammad Ali.
06:56Some people think he might be number one of all time.
06:58So when I knock him out,
07:01that puts me, have to put me up there.
07:04You know, not too many people, not Larry Holmes out.
07:09And here comes Bonecrusher Smith now,
07:11and Rich, a very different looking Bonecrusher Smith
07:13than the one we saw
07:14when these two hooked up in Las Vegas 15 years ago.
07:17Yeah, I'm kind of disappointed
07:18we can't see Bonecrusher's eyes.
07:20You remember when he was younger,
07:21and especially in that fight with Holmes,
07:23when he used to come down the aisle,
07:24those eyes would be wide open like doorknobs.
07:27But no matter what, he's got his fans here tonight.
07:29You see this big crowd,
07:31and these are mostly Bonecrusher Smith fans.
07:34This is his area of the country,
07:36and unlike the fight when he went into Las Vegas,
07:39when he went in pretty much as an unknown,
07:41he goes in tonight well-known
07:43to his fans in this particular area.
07:45And of course, he's not wide-eyed tonight,
07:47and you heard him say in that piece we just showed you
07:49that the last time he was very inexperienced
07:51and maybe was a little bit wide-eyed,
07:53both figuratively and literally.
07:55Well, I think, you know, obviously
07:57because it was his first opportunity
07:58to fight for a world championship,
08:00and maybe he didn't really know
08:02what he was getting into.
08:03Things had worked very smoothly for him
08:05up until that point.
08:06But it used to be kind of hilarious
08:08to see him get into that ring
08:09and stare at his opponent
08:10with those big, gigantic eyes.
08:12Well, he is a bigger Bonecrusher Smith
08:14than we saw that last time in Las Vegas, to be sure.
08:17Still a very popular figure around these parts
08:20in his native North Carolina.
08:22He is, as we said, a college graduate,
08:24won the WBA title
08:26when he defeated Tim Witherspoon
08:27in a big surprise,
08:28and then, of course,
08:29was beaten himself by Mike Tyson.
08:31He has fought since then very sporadically.
08:34What about Larry Holmes?
08:36Always looks pretty much the same
08:37coming into the ring.
08:38He's all business.
08:39Yeah, this is just how Larry likes
08:40to bounce down the aisle
08:41coming into the ring.
08:43This guy was a great heavyweight champion
08:46of the world.
08:47I think anybody who looks at it objectively
08:49certainly has to put Larry Holmes
08:51in the top ten of all time.
08:53I think, Barry,
08:54that he always chafed a little bit
08:56privately over the lack of acclaim
08:58that he received
08:59because he followed Muhammad Ali
09:00and he defeated Muhammad Ali.
09:02But make no mistake about it,
09:04this guy was a tremendous champion.
09:06He's never gotten his just due,
09:08but you have an idea.
09:09History will treat him kindly.
09:10We'll be back.
09:13Shooting off fireworks here
09:14at the Crown Coliseum
09:15in Fayetteville, North Carolina
09:17as we are set to go
09:18with our main event.
09:19Barry Tompkins and Rich Murata
09:21about to sit back with you
09:22and watch Larry Holmes
09:24and Bone Crusher Smith.
09:26Look at the records of these two men.
09:27Enviable, of course,
09:28for Larry Holmes.
09:2966 up and six down.
09:3349 years of age.
09:34A grandfather.
09:36And Bone Crusher,
09:37he's just three years younger,
09:38but a veritable child, I guess,
09:40by the standards being set here.
09:42Bone Crusher's record
09:43at 44-16-1.
09:45Was a lot better earlier
09:46in his career.
09:46Suffered some defeats
09:47as he fought sporadically
09:48here in the 90s.
09:50Has been serving the dual role
09:52as both promoter and fighter.
09:54Here are the rules.
09:55Three knockdown rule,
09:56not in effect.
09:56There won't be a standing eight count
09:58and the fight must be completed
10:00for four rounds
10:01or it will be judged
10:02a tactical draw.
10:04So there are our participants.
10:06Let's meet them officially
10:07as we go to the center of the ring
10:09and Mark Barrow.

11:46Here is the former
11:47WBA
11:49Heavyweight Champion
11:50of the world,
11:51James
11:53Bone Crusher
11:55Smith!
11:57Smith!
12:02His opponent

12:06wearing his patented
12:08white trunks
12:09with red trim,
12:11he weighed in

12:13250 pounds.

12:1866 victories,
12:206 defeats,
12:21and 42 wins
12:23coming by way
12:24of knockout.
12:25He hails
12:26from Easton,
12:28Pennsylvania.
12:29Here is
12:30the former
12:32Heavyweight Champion
12:33of the world,
12:35the Easton
12:36Assassin,
12:37Larry
12:40Holmes!
12:42Holmes!
12:4412 rounds
12:45for the Legends
12:46Heavyweight Championship.
12:49Bring it in there, guys.
12:51Here you go, Larry.
12:51Here you go, Larry.
12:52Here you go, Larry.
12:53All right, gentlemen,
12:53let's go to the
12:54question room.
12:55Let's go.
12:5512 rounds
12:56for the Legends
12:57of Boxing Heavyweight
12:57title.
12:58Give me a good,
12:59clean fight.
13:00Obey my commands
13:01at all times.
13:02Touch gloves.
13:03Best of luck.
13:03God bless.
13:05So there is the preamble,
13:07and what's left now
13:08is the main event,
13:09and Larry Holmes
13:10coming in here.
13:10I do not miss too many meals.
13:12In fact, I guess you can make
13:12that statement about both
13:13of these guys.
13:14Yeah, taking a look
13:15at the two of them
13:15just physically,
13:16it looks to me
13:16as though Larry Holmes
13:17is in better condition
13:18than his bone pressure Smith.
13:20Larry actually a little
13:21closer to his fighting weight
13:22here than Smith,
13:24certainly at 275.
13:25And Larry Holmes,
13:26even at his very best,
13:28has never been confused
13:29with a Mr. World contest.
13:34He's never going to rival
13:36Arnold Schwarzenegger,
13:37even now.
13:38Yeah, but Arnold can't
13:38throw a jab like Larry either.
13:40Well, that's the big difference,
13:41and it's having a great
13:43physical presence
13:44and being an outstanding boxer
13:46have never been
13:46exactly synonymous.
13:48Of course, the tools
13:49now that we're looking for
13:50from Larry Holmes,
13:50the great left jab,
13:51which he uses strikes
13:52with piston-like rapidity,
13:54and then the right hand
13:56of Holmes, which will follow,
13:57and Holmes can use it
13:59in the right hand
14:00either as a lead
14:00or as a counter punch
14:01and is effective
14:02in both ways.
14:03Smith also likes
14:04to throw the right hand.
14:06It has power,
14:06but it's not as sharp,
14:08nor is his jab
14:08as sharp as is Larry Holmes.
14:10Now, Smith is a guy
14:11likely to just try
14:11to load up
14:12and get Larry Holmes
14:13out of there,
14:14and Larry Holmes
14:14is always very workman-like.
14:16Another guy,
14:16as we mentioned earlier
14:17with Greg Page,
14:18is not likely to get you
14:19out with one punch.
14:20He's just going to wear you out.
14:23Larry will try to use
14:24whatever quickness
14:25he has left here
14:26to beat Bonecrusher Smith
14:28to the punch
14:29with his jab
14:30and then follow it up
14:30with that right.
14:34Holmes also does a good job
14:36of jabbing to the body,
14:37too,
14:37which a lot of fighters
14:38neglect.
14:42Well, Bonecrusher Smith
14:43clearly got Larry Holmes'
14:44attention
14:45the last time
14:45they hooked up,
14:46despite the fact
14:47it was 15 long years ago.
14:49On a very chilly night,
14:51incidentally,
14:51in Las Vegas.
14:52Very tough
14:53to fight
14:54under the conditions
14:54that these two fought
14:55under the first time.
14:56It was cold.
14:57It was an outdoor fight.
14:59Not the kind of fight
15:00you could just walk into
15:01and be ready.
15:03But he cut Larry Holmes
15:05that night
15:05and it went into
15:06the 12th round
15:06before Bonecrusher was stopped.
15:08He did put on a good show
15:09and eventually won
15:10the championship
15:11a couple of years later
15:12when he defeated
15:13Tim Witherspoon.
15:17Bonecrusher Smith,
15:18as we said,
15:18has been busy
15:19as a promoter
15:20in addition to
15:21fighting on his own car.
15:22He's always been
15:23an entrepreneurial sort.
15:24And in fact,
15:25you can make the same statement
15:26about Larry Holmes.
15:27He's been very successful
15:28in business
15:28in his native
15:29Easton, Pennsylvania.
15:32Very popular figure
15:33there to this day.
15:36I think all that talk
15:37about Larry's money
15:39and some of it
15:40coming from Larry himself
15:41contributed maybe
15:42to that lack of popularity
15:43that he had
15:44in the 1980s
15:45as well as
15:46to the other aspects
15:47I talked about
15:47as far as following Ali.
15:50That and of course
15:51demanding the respect
15:52that he felt he deserved
15:53and he did in fact deserve it
15:55but maybe the way
15:56he went about asking for it
15:57did not set well
15:59with many people
15:59especially in the media.
16:01But again,
16:02I do feel that history
16:03will treat him very kindly
16:05and he will be recognized
16:06for what he is
16:07and what he was
16:07and that is
16:08a terrific champion.
16:10He's looking for that right hand.
16:11Look at him loading up.
16:11Look at how he's holding
16:12that right hand.
16:13He's waiting for the opportunity,
16:15Barry.
16:15He's holding it like
16:16he's got jewels
16:17tucked away with it.
16:20Coming to the end
16:21of round number one
16:22he's got an effective
16:23first round
16:23for the former champion
16:25Larry Holmes.
16:31Just about set
16:32for round number two
16:33James Bonecrusher-Smith
16:35who was up off
16:36his stool early
16:36meets Larry Holmes
16:37in the center of the ring.
16:39Good first round
16:39I thought by Larry Holmes
16:40and once again
16:41that characteristic
16:42of both fighters
16:43Smith looking to load up
16:45get the big shot in
16:46and Holmes just working
16:47his man.
16:48Holmes won it mostly
16:49I think with the jab
16:50in round number one
16:51he really didn't land
16:51anything of significance
16:52off of that
16:53but he probably will
16:55because he's got
16:55the right hand
16:56that can bring a hurting
16:57on anybody.
16:58So many fighters
16:59found out during
17:00that seven year reign
17:01of his Barry
17:02over 20 defenses
17:03second in length
17:05and second in the number
17:06of defenses
17:06to the great Joe Louis.
17:08And did to his credit
17:09fight everybody
17:10who was around
17:11at that time
17:11it was perhaps
17:13not the stellar group
17:14that there might have
17:14been in other eras
17:15but you can't really
17:17accuse Larry Holmes
17:17of dodging anybody.
17:20Well when he beat
17:21Ken Norton
17:21I tell you
17:21that was one of the
17:22greatest fights
17:22there's that right hand
17:23that's the first time
17:24we've seen him show it
17:25and he showed some
17:26quickness with it Barry
17:27brought it right behind
17:28the jab too
17:28and that again
17:29characteristic of
17:30Larry Holmes.
17:36He talked earlier
17:37about the fact
17:38that these two
17:39have similar backgrounds
17:41in that they are
17:42very popular figures
17:43in their own community
17:44have done very well
17:46financially outside
17:46the ring
17:47and while they both
17:49talk about being
17:49motivated by the
17:50paycheck that they'll
17:51get in this
17:51Legends fight
17:54both still seem to be
17:55in pretty good stead
17:56so far as their
17:57financial
17:58the financial part
17:59of their life
17:59is concerned
18:00and yet there seems
18:01to be an underlying
18:02hostility between
18:03these two.
18:03That might be
18:04the most surprising
18:04aspect of this fight
18:05as they get together
18:06even though it's a rematch
18:07I mean when you
18:08could say
18:09there actually
18:09was kind of an
18:10acrimonious
18:11buildup
18:11between these two
18:12going in
18:13and it doesn't
18:14appear as though
18:14that that's a
18:16you know
18:17something that's
18:18fake or phony
18:18I mean there seems
18:19to be a dislike
18:20between the two
18:21and Holmes has come
18:22out here certainly
18:23to do some damage
18:25to Bone Crusher
18:26if he can
18:26and Bone Crusher
18:27was speaking ill
18:28of Holmes too
18:28even at the weigh-in
18:30they're arguing
18:30who's going to come
18:30into the ring first
18:31who gets introduced
18:32first
18:33they're both
18:33former champions
18:34that type of thing
18:34so they weren't
18:36exactly joking
18:37as they came
18:37into the ring
18:38here tonight
18:38and it's really
18:39rather surprising
18:39because these two
18:40are really pretty much
18:41upstanding citizens
18:42and as we said
18:43extremely popular
18:44in their own communities
18:46and Larry Holmes
18:46fighting in the lion's den
18:48here as he has come down
18:49to Bone Crusher
18:50Smith's community
18:51here in Fayetteville
18:52North Carolina
18:53and they're both
18:54kind of just probing
18:54here right now
18:55Barry
18:55still trying to look
18:56for an opening
18:57maybe openings are there
18:59and their bodies
18:59can't react to it
19:00right now
19:01but we will find out
19:02as the fight evolves
19:04here's the first
19:05little bit of an
19:06offensive salvo
19:07from Smith tonight
19:08and Larry Holmes
19:09perhaps a little bit
19:10uncharacteristically
19:11much like Smith
19:12looking to load up
19:13more than he usually does
19:14there is a quick
19:15right hand by Holmes
19:17tried to follow
19:17with it
19:18missed with the second
19:20it's still a stunning
19:21right hand
19:21when he throws it
19:22correctly
19:24Smith a little bit
19:25short with that
19:26long right hand
19:35so the end
19:36of the second round
19:37and again
19:39a little to choose
19:40between these two
19:40both men
19:41looking to load up
19:42maybe a little bit
19:43more than we might
19:44have expected
19:44at least from
19:45Larry Holmes
19:46and it must be said
19:47too Smith
19:48fell into that stool
19:49a little bit heavily
19:53taking a look at some
19:54of the round two
19:54action
19:55there's that quick
19:56right from Larry
19:56Holmes
19:56and even in slow
19:57motion it still
19:58looks pretty quick
19:59at 49 years of age
20:01he can snap it out
20:02there when he has to
20:02he was just probing
20:03there you see the
20:04following the jab
20:05much in the same
20:06way it did when he
20:07fought Jerry Cooney
20:08within the second round
20:10of their bout
20:10when he put Cooney
20:11down with that
20:12left-right combination
20:13there you saw
20:14that was kind of
20:14an interesting
20:15little sneak
20:16right hand
20:16by Larry
20:17he wants to do it
20:19now let your hands go
20:19in the corner of
20:21Larry Holmes
20:23and now in the corner
20:24of Bonecrusher-Smith
20:26they're asking for
20:27more aggression
20:28from Smith
20:28asking him
20:29let your hands go
20:30Bone
20:31swelling around
20:32the left eye
20:32Bonecrusher-Smith
20:34due I'm sure
20:35to the right hand
20:36of Larry Holmes
20:41round of the three
20:46watching the legends
20:47of boxing
20:48coming your way
20:49from Fayetteville
20:50North Carolina
20:52Greg Page
20:52already a winner
20:53over Tim Witherspoon
20:54Billy Costello
20:55and a surprise
20:56verdict over Juan
20:57Laporte
20:59and this our main
21:00event
21:03I tell you
21:04you look at that
21:04right hand
21:05from Larry Holmes
21:05and he really wants
21:06to unlock it
21:07right there
21:08you can just see
21:09him loading up
21:09for Bear
21:10with that right
21:14Larry Holmes
21:15very savvy
21:16always has been
21:19and you know
21:20something else
21:20Barry
21:21he probably
21:21doesn't get
21:22a lot of credit
21:22but this guy
21:23had great heart
21:24I mean he was
21:25on the doorstep
21:26of defeat
21:27on a couple
21:28of occasions
21:28as heavyweight
21:30champion
21:30when he fought
21:31Ernie Shavers
21:31when he was
21:32put down
21:32by a terrifying
21:33right hand
21:34by Shavers
21:35and again
21:35when he fought
21:36Ronaldo Snipes
21:37again a right hand
21:38knocking him down
21:38very hard
21:39he was out of it
21:40on both those occasions
21:41but on each occasion
21:42he was able
21:43to fight his way
21:44out of the fog
21:44fight back
21:45and get the victories
21:47Larry Holmes
21:47had a lot of heart
21:48looks like he still does
21:49he wants to fight it out
21:50with a bone pressure
21:51yeah and that's something
21:52you don't learn in a gym
21:53that's just something
21:54that's either there
21:54or it's not there
21:55and especially
21:56the Ronaldo Snipes fight
21:58I had a chance
21:59to do that fight also
22:00and Snipes had him out
22:01he was gone
22:02done
22:03but it was
22:04Holmes who had the ticker
22:05and not the aggressor
22:07Snipes
22:09Bonecrusher's making him
22:10fight in this round
22:11Bonecrusher's come out
22:12a lot more aggressive
22:13now here in round three
22:14he's landed some good shots
22:15had a little bit of success
22:17there's a little bit
22:18of that savvy
22:19veteran wisdom
22:20you see
22:20the old forearm
22:21across the throat
22:22Barry
22:25and despite
22:26the comparison
22:27in our age
22:28Larry Holmes
22:29of course
22:29with much more
22:30experience
22:30in the ring
22:31against
22:31a much higher
22:32caliber of opposition
22:34than has had
22:35Bonecrusher Smith
22:37good body shot
22:38with the right hand
22:39from Holmes
22:44Bonecrusher has gone
22:44a long way
22:45with that nickname
22:46oh yeah
22:47although it did change
22:48to Boneclutcher
22:49for a while
22:50after he fought
22:50Mike Tyson
22:51and clutched
22:52and held his way
22:53to that 12 round
22:53decision
22:54yeah very surprising
22:56as a matter of fact
22:56in that fight
22:57the very disillusioning
22:59performance
23:01a lot of us
23:02were really looking
23:02forward to a real
23:03punch out that night
23:04but once Bonecrusher
23:05tasted Tyson's power
23:06he held on for 11 rounds
23:08then in the 12th
23:08he hurt Tyson
23:09with a punch
23:10and everybody said
23:11what were you waiting for
23:11it was there for you
23:14but it went to a decision
23:15and Tyson became champ
23:17or added Bonecrusher's title
23:19he already had one third
23:20of the title at that point
23:2110 seconds guys
23:2210 seconds
23:24coming to the end
23:25of round number three
23:33we'll be back
23:34right after this
23:39welcome back
23:40in the corner
23:40of Larry Holmes
23:4148 in a row
23:43before he tasted defeat
23:44still a very enviable record
23:45let's look back
23:46Rich
23:46alright in round number three
23:48Bonecrusher as you can see
23:49much more aggressive
23:50in that round
23:50he did as his corner men
23:52asked him to do
23:53let your hands go
23:54here's a nice combination
23:55coming up now
23:55from Bonecrusher
23:56he forced Larry Holmes
23:58to fight in that round
23:59he got him going
24:00with the jab there
24:01a little bit
24:01got him going backwards
24:02and made Larry Holmes
24:03try to fight back
24:04fight off the ropes
24:05if he could
24:05much better exchanges
24:07in that round
24:08the first round really
24:09where Bonecrusher
24:10came out to crush
24:11the bones of Holmes
24:12yes he did
24:13and he also had Larry Holmes
24:14fighting off his heels
24:15which Holmes does not
24:16like to do
24:16he wants to be up
24:17on his toes
24:18utilize that jab
24:19starts off
24:19with a right hand
24:20here in round four
24:21now Larry wants to
24:22start off faster
24:24and threw a pretty good
24:25right hand to the body
24:26there
24:26now he's going to get
24:27that jab
24:27when all else is failing
24:29for Larry Holmes
24:30he reverts back
24:31to getting that jab
24:32going
24:33dancing with what
24:34brung it
24:36it's been his biggest
24:37weapon throughout
24:38his career
24:39you see where he holds
24:40his hands
24:40Holmes
24:40he will try to lure
24:41Bonecrusher
24:42into mistakes
24:43try to lure him
24:44into leading with his left
24:45and then bring the right
24:46hand over it
24:47if he can
24:47he loves to do that
24:49loves to counterpunch
24:50with that right
24:52missed with a wild
24:53left hand
24:55bonecrusher's not
24:56taking the bait
24:56right now
24:59Larry's inviting
25:00him in
25:07Phil Clancy
25:08again did a very good
25:09job maintaining
25:10control and yet
25:11being invisible
25:18Smith looks like he's
25:19relaxing in there a
25:20little bit in the last
25:21couple of rounds
25:22he's just kind of
25:23following Holmes around
25:24isn't he
25:25yep
25:26and he's not making
25:27anything happen in this
25:29round the way that he did
25:30in round number three
25:42both fighters right now
25:45headhunting a little bit
25:48Smith is just pushing his
25:49punches far more snap than
25:50the punches of Larry Holmes
25:51and that was that counter
25:53right hand you just spoke
25:54of a moment ago
25:54the great thing about
25:58Holmes right hand is that
25:59he's always been able
26:00either to lead with it or
26:02utilize it as a counter
26:03punch or follow the jab
26:04with it
26:05got a double right hand
26:06of the head and the right
26:07hand of the body by Holmes
26:08nothing devastating but
26:09cumulatively it could have
26:10an effect
26:14that was a right hand by
26:15Smith
26:19this is what bonecrusher's
26:20got to do he's got to
26:21crowd Larry Holmes
26:22that's where he had some
26:23success in the last round
26:24when Holmes gets out at
26:26ring center and he can use
26:27his quicker hands he's
26:28going to have it to his
26:29have it his way
26:35bonecrusher Smith I had
26:36the sense maybe getting a
26:36little bit tired here
26:39looks like it looks like
26:40he's kind of pushing those
26:41punches out
26:46he is simply not in as good
26:48a condition as Larry
26:49Holmes did
26:50a little puffiness under
26:52the left eye of Larry
26:53Holmes
26:54and there was a puffiness
26:55earlier over the left eye
26:58of bonecrusher Smith
27:05right hand again by Holmes
27:07but Holmes pushed his punches
27:09a little bit that time too
27:10nonetheless he landed three
27:12of them consecutively maybe
27:13stealing the round
27:14five time on Fox Sportsnet
27:19continues
27:19welcome back to Sunday
27:21night fights on Fox Sportsnet
27:26you're in the corner of Larry
27:27Holmes the usual rooting
27:28section throw more punches
27:30straight not your punches
27:31short right hand
27:32here's a look back
27:34Larry Holmes closed the round
27:36very strong
27:36watch the consecutive
27:38rights
27:38one two
27:39now take one down to the
27:40body
27:41three right hands
27:41and punctuated with one
27:43left
27:43Holmes still punching
27:44quickly at least quicker
27:45than his bonecrusher Smith
27:48three straight right hands
27:51and they all landed
27:52successively for Larry
27:53Holmes
27:54no doubt winning the round
27:56four
27:56and I've got the Holmes
27:57taking three of the first
27:58four rounds
28:00so we get ready for round
28:01number five
28:02and a big blow
28:03from James bonecrusher
28:05Smith
28:05Larry Holmes playing the part
28:07of the puncher more than
28:08he is the boxer
28:08as he is squared up
28:10pretty much in front
28:11of bonecrusher Smith
28:13well I think he feels
28:14he can do that
28:15because he's got the
28:15quickness aspect here
28:17you know despite the
28:18punch on both guys
28:19these guys did both
28:20condition themselves
28:21it's a little harder
28:22to get your body
28:23as you know Barry
28:24cut
28:25yes I know it very well
28:27those of us who are
28:27over 35
28:28it's a little hard
28:29to get rid of that belly
28:29but that doesn't mean
28:30that these guys haven't
28:31worked at their
28:32conditioning worked hard
28:33and you know just to
28:34go out there and
28:34exchange punches like
28:35this for three minutes
28:36around certainly at
28:37their age upper 40s
28:38is a difficult thing to do
28:41and as you said Larry
28:42Holmes was never a guy
28:43who was going to win
28:45any Mr. America awards
28:46he's always had a bit
28:48of a bit of a punch
28:50even when he was in
28:50great shape but it
28:51never affected him
28:52and I'm not sure it
28:53still is or isn't
28:56fans there had dual
28:57chance first Larry Larry
28:58Larry even bone bone bone
29:00but not as much of a
29:02hometown edge for Smith
29:03as I anticipated there
29:04might be yeah you're
29:05right there has been it
29:06seems a lot of support
29:07for Holmes it was just
29:09surprising to me the
29:11reception he got when
29:12he entered the ring
29:12there were a lot of
29:13people cheering for
29:14Holmes I think it's
29:16interesting that he too
29:16may be another one of
29:17those guys and we see
29:18this in every sport not
29:19just in boxing that the
29:20older you get the more
29:22respect you get well I
29:23feel that Larry Holmes
29:24has really mellowed in
29:25recent years and I
29:26remember when he was on
29:27his tour before he fought
29:28Holyfield a few years
29:29ago he just seemed a lot
29:30more at ease with
29:31himself he was much more
29:33of a likable guy more
29:34approachable Barry you
29:35didn't feel like he was
29:36going to bite your head
29:36off and I think that he
29:39just he just became a
29:40more likable person and
29:41people have picked up on
29:42that and he's been
29:43picking up in fans I
29:44agree I you know having
29:45been around him a great
29:46deal to be honest with
29:47you Rich I always liked
29:48him even when it wasn't
29:50a popular thing to do and
29:52but maybe he had to be
29:53with him a little bit
29:54more one-on-one you're
29:55right he he made demands
29:57of people and of the
29:59media as we said about
30:00respect and that kind of
30:01thing and I'm sure if he
30:03had to do it over he
30:03probably would have done a
30:04little bit differently
30:05because he did go through
30:06that period of time where
30:07for whatever reason there
30:08was a an anti-Larry Holmes
30:10sentiment but he's done
30:12himself pretty well ready
30:13for this fight for a
30:15legends fight that's where
30:16Larry Holmes is right now I
30:17think and he knows that
30:19he's not going to beat any
30:19top contenders at this
30:21point but in this milieu
30:23he can he can do very well
30:25he can prosper and I know
30:27how disappointed he was at
30:29that fight with George
30:29Foreman fell through both
30:31from a money's sake or also
30:32from being able to prove
30:34something that he could beat
30:35George Foreman you know the
30:36other thing about Larry
30:37Holmes too that I feel is is
30:39worthy of note here as we
30:40wind down wind down in round
30:41five of the scheduled 12
30:43round fight and that is I
30:45think he always felt that he
30:46had to sell tickets a la
30:48Muhammad Ali because there
30:49was always that inevitable
30:50comparison to Muhammad Ali
30:52and and unlike Muhammad Ali
30:54I don't think Larry ever had
30:55that shut off valve he never
30:56knew when it was time to
30:57stop selling and start worrying
31:00about the task at hand and I
31:02think that's innate and I
31:03think Ali certainly had it I'm
31:04not sure Larry did and I
31:06think that worked against him
31:07in the public eye
31:09well he's a lot more relaxed
31:11right now and I guess he lets
31:12other people take care of
31:13that
31:13push your feet back push your
31:14feet back push your feet back
31:15push your feet back doing a
31:15good job push your breath that
31:17round that was the round to
31:18catch your breath all right
31:20Larry does looking pretty good
31:22shape he doesn't seem to
31:23really be blown too hard here
31:27move the ice move the ice move
31:29the ice still has his brother in
31:30his corner and he's been there
31:31from day one
31:34Larry you're the man out here
31:35that's right
31:45that looks like a tired fighter
31:47to me but you're not taking it
31:48you're not taking it just let
31:49him go
31:50the man is dead look at the man
31:51bone look at the man okay he's
31:53dead okay
31:54show me something okay all right
31:56show me something
32:06in a recent fight bone crusher
32:08smith had to give up very
32:09quickly in the first round in
32:12fact due to an injured shoulder
32:13you might have noticed that he
32:14asked his corner man to rub his
32:16shoulder there between rounds
32:19so we're on the way around six
32:21the fight increasingly going the
32:26way of the man of the white
32:27trunks Larry Holmes they were
32:30really trying to encourage bone
32:31crusher though they even pointed
32:33out to Larry made him look over
32:34at Larry Holmes look at him look
32:36at him and all bones could say
32:38was okay okay he wants to let his
32:43hands go but sometimes they just
32:45can't go you see the opening
32:47and it's not happening although
32:48Holmes is still quick enough to
32:50flash that left jab out and
32:52believe me he could teach a lot
32:53of young guys something about
32:54the left jab but again it's the
32:57old your mind trying to cash a
32:59check that your body won't
33:00catch
33:06right there would have been a
33:08good opportunity for bone
33:09crusher to throw the right hand
33:11but he couldn't let it go
33:21inside of two minutes remaining in
33:24round six I think Holmes is
33:26dominating this fight and he is
33:27looking more and more confident
33:29with each round actually Larry
33:31Holmes looking better than I've
33:33seen him look in recent times
33:36being effective dictating the
33:38tempo of the fight doing pretty
33:39much as he pleases
33:51and bone crusher smith just doesn't
33:54seem to have the ability to answer
33:56right now this of course is our main
33:58event we have watched Greg page
34:00defeat Tim Witherspoon the man
34:02whom bone crusher smith defeated to
34:04win the heavyweight championship
34:06witherspoon having to retire after
34:08the seventh round with a back
34:09problem and then that Billy
34:11Costello in a surprise decision
34:13defeating Juan Laporte and I
34:15think no man was more surprised
34:16than the winner Billy Costello
34:19right here Smith just can't get
34:21off Barry that's it he just cannot
34:23get off he can't get his punches
34:24off at all and Larry Holmes is
34:26having it all his way Smith was
34:28trying anything he was waving his
34:29right hand out a few moments ago
34:31trying to distract Holmes if he
34:32could but nothing's really working
34:34for him very one-sided fight right
34:37at the moment Larry Holmes doing
34:39what he wants and bone crusher
34:41smith unable to do what he wants
34:43it seems
34:48so pressure even having a hard time
34:49getting the jab yeah it really is
34:51he's just looking like a weary
34:53warrior right at the moment
34:56and homes complicating things for
34:58him with a stiff jab there it is
35:01again there it is again
35:0310 seconds remaining in round number
35:06six another round that has been
35:08dominated by Larry Holmes
35:13so Holmes just rolling along here
35:15and so are we we're coming back
35:18going away of this man Larry Holmes
35:21let's look at round number six for
35:23just a moment pick up some of the
35:24action there rich well I think it
35:26was the most one-sided round of the
35:28fight so far decisive homes basically
35:30dominated with his jab bone crusher
35:33smith landed like one punch there it
35:35is one jab and that was about it
35:37hardly through the right hand at all
35:39and basically was inactive for the
35:41three minutes yeah really not able to
35:42get out of his own way it seemed in
35:44that round so let's see what he has
35:45left Larry Holmes looking all business
35:47comes out to meet him and starts out
35:49with a quick left jab this really
35:51isn't much different than the way
35:52Larry Holmes used to cut down most of
35:54his fighters as champions just work on
35:57them work on them with the jab break
35:58them down with the right hand and
36:00eventually finish him off he used to
36:01call it getting them drunk first then
36:04mugging them oh and that's exactly the
36:06way the script for this one has gone
36:08good right hand by Larry Holmes
36:11does not seem to have lost a lot of
36:12hand speed over the years
36:18and he's getting getting an increasingly
36:21immobile bone crusher smith in front
36:23of him too and one thing bone crusher
36:26really has not done tonight is to put
36:28up the kind of pressure that is going
36:30to make Larry Holmes wear down Larry
36:32must feel like he's young again he is
36:34not wearing down and he's not wearing
36:36down because he's got a fighter in
36:38front of him who is not forcing the
36:40fight not really forcing the action not
36:42forcing Larry Holmes to fight back and
36:44wear down let's go any other thing
36:47that Smith has been unable to do and
36:49this unlike what we saw Greg Page do
36:52with Tim Wetherspoon that is lean on
36:54his opponent and where his opponent out
36:56that way bone crusher hadn't been able
36:57to do that either I think really that
37:05Holmes is beating bone crusher easier
37:07this time than he did the first time
37:09they fought talking to him a little bit
37:10there too
37:11we talked earlier about the fact that
37:14there's been a lot of antagonism between
37:16these two
37:19well bone crusher smith had a few things
37:21to say about Larry Holmes personal life
37:24that Holmes really took exception to
37:26I think Holmes came into the ring really
37:28wanting to knock his block off
37:29well and so far he might have stopped a little
37:31short of knocking his block off but he has
37:33dominated the fight and getting ever more so
37:37as this fight gets into the later rounds
37:44one minute left in round number seven
37:50Holmes gets that jab home almost all the time
37:52Smith just not doing anything
37:54hasn't for the last couple of rounds either
37:58by being completely dictated by Larry
38:00Holmes
38:17just kind of stalking bone crusher smith at this point
38:20it looked like he was studying him there a little looking for an opening
38:23give me a clean break
38:24give me a clean break
38:24give me a clean break
38:24get off Larry
38:24come on
38:25bone crusher smith kind of just walks in and then holds Holmes
38:28but it's not with real hard aggression
38:31took a chopping right to the head for his efforts that time
38:39nothing devastating but just an ongoing beating being administered by Larry Holmes on bone crusher smith
38:45who looked to me as though he might have been getting tired along about the end of the third round
38:49and it's gotten progressively worse while Holmes has just been pretty much the same and very consistent throughout the fight
38:59he's ready to go
39:00you're giving this man plenty of heart
39:03you're giving this man plenty of heart
39:03you're giving him plenty of heart
39:04boom
39:04just give me one round
39:06or no stop punching
39:07alright
39:08boom
39:09just step to the man
39:11where's your mind close at
39:12you got it
39:13here's more of the beating from Larry Holmes
39:15there you see the right hand which has been a very big weapon for Holmes throughout his career and certainly
39:20tonight he's been able time and again to get to it
39:23whether in a lead as in that case or in a counter punches situation he's been able to land that
39:29right hand and bone crusher smith really has had no answer for it in this fight
39:34right near the end of the round bone crusher landed a couple of left jabs and tried to make Larry
39:38fight a little bit in his style but it's just not working although
39:42some
39:44facial aspects that Larry home is sporting that little bit of a nod over his left eye would indicate that
39:49he's been in a fight here tonight bone crusher smith though looking every part the beaten fighter really unable to
39:54even respond to his corners
39:56there's uh
39:57urges to uh do some business get out there give him one round and smith uh could not even verbally
40:03respond to it not whether or not he can do it physically remains to be seen
40:06but look at the sprightly Holmes up on his toes dancing
40:09flashing out that jab again at the start of this round
40:13Larry may be looking for the finisher
40:14let him out James let him get
40:15let him out
40:16and Holmes taking a long look
40:19at smith
40:20smith was taking a long look over at somebody in the corner
40:25yeah he's really looking like a beaten man at this point
40:29and has in fact for the last couple of rounds
40:35well nothing going on and now even less as Holmes backs away
40:38now
40:39Holmes is looking over at that corner
40:41this is like a debate
40:42let's go let's go let's go
40:44let's go
40:44I'm not sure what Larry Holmes is saying
40:47and there is a swing and a miss
40:51now that's embarrassing
40:56and even draws
40:57a smile and a bit of a chuckle from bone crusher smith
41:01and that might have been all that smith has left
41:05I think that was an embarrassed smile for bone crusher
41:08as I think he really had high hopes and dreams
41:12of the fighting here and before a home crowd
41:15and basically putting on a great performance
41:17but he's being dominated by Larry Holmes
41:20and really looks done in
41:24another right hand and that knocks smith backwards
41:26and now Holmes is able to do that with less than a crushing punch
41:30he's rotating that shoulder around again
41:32bone crusher smith
41:34you notice that he's making like a circular motion
41:37with his right shoulder and holding the right arm up
41:43and he is doing that
41:44and I think he's indicating to his corner that that may be a problem
41:47and now Bill Clancy looking to the corner
41:50and that's it
41:51the fight is stopped
41:52so I think you were very right in that evaluation rich
41:56that there obviously is an ongoing problem with the right shoulder
41:59and bone crusher smith will say I'm not going to inflict any more damage on it
42:04he was a beaten fighter anyway
42:06well not that long ago he had to give up in the first round
42:08against Joe Buckner with a shoulder injury
42:10and the same thing has happened here tonight
42:12although a little bit later
42:14although frankly I think he was on his way to being stopped
42:16what a rather sudden ending
42:18although as you point out rich
42:20this fight really was over before it was over
42:22as Larry Holmes was dominating things completely
42:25and it will go in the books as a TKO
42:28for Larry Holmes in the eighth round
42:30he is the winner and we will be back
42:35well the end comes rather suddenly
42:38as bone crusher smith citing the shoulder problems
42:41that have plagued him for the last year or so
42:44as the reason for retiring
42:46but Rich I think he could probably make a pretty good case
42:48that this was four or five rounds in the making
42:50yeah he was going to get beat anyway
42:52but it's a real disappointment for bone crusher smith
42:54look at how he was holding his right hand there
42:56up in the air
42:57he had rotated that shoulder around a little bit just before that
43:00and it seemed as though he was coming to the end of the line
43:03he knew it he's waving over to his corner
43:05Holmes right now just simply isn't going to have anything of it
43:07he's going to go out and pursue his opponent
43:09now Clancy the referee doesn't quite understand here
43:12that bone crusher is surrendering
43:15in fact he's counting at that point
43:16but in fact bone crusher was throwing it in at that point
43:19yeah it was interesting too though
43:20that he was able to raise his arm
43:22which doesn't usually accompany a shoulder injury
43:24in order to signal to his corner that he was all done dancing
43:26but in fact he was the fight is over
43:29Larry Holmes wins
43:30we make it official now as we go to the center of the ring
43:32and the ring announcer Mark Biro
43:33Mark
43:35ladies and gentlemen
43:37the time
43:38two minutes
43:40of the eighth round
43:42the blue corner
43:45retires
43:46the winner
43:47by tactical knockout
43:49and legends
43:51heavyweight champion
43:53Larry
43:54Holmes
43:58Holmes
44:00Holmes
44:00well Larry Holmes is a winner and I don't want to detract from his performance at all
44:04I thought Larry Holmes was as sharp as he has been in any recent year
44:08yeah and one thing that's going to be very happy
44:10look at he's got time enough to joke right now with the referee
44:12he'll be able to strap on a championship belt around his waist now
44:16he held the world heavyweight championship from 1978 to 85
44:20he gets fitted now for the legends belt
44:22and that is his wife alongside and she has been alongside
44:25through a long and circuitous route
44:27with Larry Holmes
44:28so the new champion is the old champion
44:31he is the legends champion
44:33and there is the conquered right there
44:34James Bonecrusher Smith
44:37but for the moment
44:38Larry Holmes is back in the sun
44:41we'll be back right after this
44:44is the winner of our main event
44:45as he defeats James Bonecrusher Smith
44:47Smith retiring
44:49in the eighth round
44:50and Larry Holmes
44:51Rich just kind of went out
44:52and did what he needed to do to win the fight
44:54he knew what he needed to do
44:55because he'd done it once before
44:56against Bonecrusher Smith
44:57and this time it was even more decisive
44:59and I think it probably means quite a bit to Larry
45:01because there was
45:02that seems that personal animosity between the two
45:05so Larry Holmes is the winner
45:06and right now
45:07he is with John Saracino
45:09John
45:11all right Larry Holmes very excited here
45:14he's got another title belt around that waist
45:16Larry you really had your way with James Smith
45:19in this fight
45:20beginning with the jab
45:21is that really what you expected
45:22a one-sided fight?
45:23yeah you know James
45:24I mean I don't like to knock nobody
45:26but J's quitting
45:271984 when I fought him
45:29and I know if he put pressure on him a lot
45:31he started hitting him
45:32he had quit again
45:33you know in the first round
45:34that cut him up pretty good
45:35with a jab
45:36so you know
45:37to give credit to James Smith
45:39he was still trying you know uh you know it's just that when i fight a guy i don't bring
45:45in
45:45garbage to try to interrupt his training or his family's life and what he's done with me was very
45:50wrong and you know he tried to hurt me and my family and that was unnecessary so you know me
45:56being off for two years it's kind of hard to get back but jenny's bone crush smith was good for
46:01me
46:01to come back so he kind of motivated you how did you feel in the first couple of rounds out
46:05there
46:05i feel i felt sluggish i feel real sluggish you know uh you know blessing that the fight with
46:11george foreman didn't come off because i know i got beat by him the way i felt like i fought
46:16today
46:16but i'll be back in the gym again and hoping that we could get george foreman back and get him
46:22in the
46:23ring once and for all so that i could quit he could quit because no matter what he thinks and
46:28try to
46:28convince people to believe you know boxing is hard it's not for young old guys like george and i it's
46:34for us old guys to fight each other and get on out of here let the young guys take over
46:38but the
46:38boxing legend is a great idea it gives gave young guys older i'll say young guys an opportunity to
46:44one laporte billy costell great patient jim with what is going to mean bone pressure smith i i think it
46:50was great and i hope this concept works for people who want to see the last great fighters one more
46:57time
46:58congratulations to one of the greatest heavyweights in history who didn't get his due in his prime but
47:05you're getting it you're getting it now you know what i'm seven years younger and i wouldn't mess
47:09with you anywhere grandpa congratulations well a self-effacing larry holmes to be sure and still
47:15that lingering animosity with james bone crusher smith back to wrap it up after this our show started
47:23with billy costello and juan laporte costello coming down from 195 pounds and laporte coming up
47:29from a featherweight career and the most surprised man in the house when the decision was announced
47:34i think it was billy costello he wins a split decision then we went to the heavyweights tim
47:38witherspoon unable to survive past round number seven torn muscle in the back against greg page
47:43too much of a body attack by greg page he emerges the winner in that one then in our main
47:47event
47:47larry holmes gave off the message to future opponents i can still fight and don't bring that
47:52personal garbage into the ring with you well one thing about it rich larry holmes always quotable still is
47:57he's the guy but nothing else is good theater yeah and i'm sure we haven't seen the last of larry
48:02especially with the victory here tonight so uh no revenge in one of our bouts and revenge for
48:07greg page in the other and billy costello marches on who knows with the future now who would have even
48:11thought they had a future but apparently they do i think they do and that's a wrap for us tonight
48:15for
48:15john saracino my partner rich morata i'm barry tompkins so long everybody a reminder to join us
48:21for the sunday night fights every sunday at seven and then it's fox sports news at 10.
