00:00We heard from David Montgomery, I would say, arguably, the big free agent
00:04or the big offseason move they've made in terms of an addition to this team.
00:09And, Clint, he described why the Houston Texans were his preferred destination.
00:17Here is David Montgomery speaking to the media today.
00:20Definitely. Houston was definitely the place that I wanted to go
00:22if that was the case, which it was.
00:24I think for me, you look at the whole organization as a whole, right?
00:28I was in Detroit. It was a very successful organization.
00:32And I practiced against Houston a couple of times.
00:36And they've always been, like, the hardest team to practice against.
00:39And you can kind of tell, like, the morale and kind of mentality that both sides of the ball
00:43and that Coach Ryan brings to the table, too.
00:46You also get to look at yourself like, dang, if I ever had an opportunity,
00:49I would love to play for a guy like that.
00:51And, look, I'm here now getting to play under a guy like that.
00:54And I want to kind of come in and show these guys that, you know,
00:57I could kind of hang with the big dog.
00:59All right.
01:00That was him talking about up close, watching them, seeing it,
01:04and the D'Amico factor, too.
01:07And I think that's one of the big advantages the Texans have is players know D'Amico,
01:17relate to D'Amico, and want to play for D'Amico.
01:22And especially players, which, oddly enough, are the type of guys D'Amico is looking for.
01:26Hard nose is usually we see it on the defensive side of the ball.
01:31But this is a guy that looks at a guy like D'Amico,
01:33and he craves to want to play for a guy like that, like he just came from, in a way.
01:37Yeah, look, I think a lot of coaches across the game at all levels,
01:41I think a lot of coaches, you know, want to be a player's coach.
01:46And in reality, you've got a coach from within your own personality.
01:50And if that is being a hard ass and not being a player's coach,
01:55if that is not having any kind of connection with your players
01:58and making it as transactional as you can and just keeping your distance, so be it.
02:05But a lot of guys make the mistake, a lot of coaches make the mistake
02:08of wanting to fit a certain mold.
02:10And most of them, it becomes this player's coach where you want to be their friends
02:13and yada, yada, yada, and it very rarely works out.
02:16I mean, D'Amico Rines has the it factor
02:19and very naturally seems to be a guy that is a player's coach.
02:25He has that natural ability to hold guys accountable,
02:31to tear into that ass when he needs to,
02:33but also naturally be a guy that when he does those things,
02:37they don't take it personal.
02:38It's when you have the ability, which I think D'Amico does,
02:42to be yourself and coach a guy, coach them really hard, love them really hard,
02:47and they don't take the love for weakness
02:50and they don't take the dog cussing personally,
02:54and you stay in that mode of a player's coach
02:58and you do it with your own instincts and from within your own personality.
03:01I think it's super, super powerful.
03:02I think Dan Campbell has it in Detroit,
03:05talking about David Montgomery, where he just came from.
03:07I think D'Amico obviously has it here.
03:10A lot of coaches search for it.
03:12A lot of coaches want to be that kind of coach.
03:14Very few do it naturally, and I think D'Amico does.
03:17And when you do, when you capture that lightning in a bottle,
03:19it's powerful, man.
03:20And I think D'Amico has it,
03:23and I think the Texans have captured that lightning in a bottle
03:26with their head coach, no question.
03:26And it's crazy.
03:27You see players, like they were able to have those joint practices with them,
03:34and he looked over there and was like, if I ever, like that's, you know,
03:40I wonder how often that happens around the league where players,
03:44a player like that, yeah, man, I like what they got going over there.
03:47That is something I would be into when he watched the coaching staff
03:51and the style and how they go about things, and he was into it.
03:55You know, the funny part of that is go back to when, really,
03:59I guess when you and I first started working together,
04:01and it was the dysfunctional years of the Texans,
04:03and we talked about it ad nauseum almost of like, man, I mean,
04:07nobody worth a damn that has options is going to want to come play here.
04:10And we get hit on a text line, and we go, yeah, whatever, it's NFL,
04:14whatever, whatever.
04:15I'm telling you, man, this is the reality of it.
04:17And then, unfortunately, I think it was obviously working against us.
04:21Now, with D'Amico, it is a huge plus,
04:24and you hear David Montgomery talking about it.
04:26I mean, I think players, I think a huge chunk of the league,
04:29even some that are winning and just don't like where they're at,
04:31I think a huge chunk of the league looks at what's going on,
04:34the city of Houston, the head coach D'Amico Rhines,
04:37the health of the organization overall, and says, hey, man,
04:40that's a place that I would love to, if the opportunity presents itself,
04:43I'd love to play there.
04:44I think there's a big chunk of the league that would say that.
04:47Yeah.
