00:01Hello. Welcome to the CV's Flight Channel.
00:06Tomac in Daytona. Unbelievable what he's been able to do here over the years.
00:11And when you talk about the legend of Eli Tomac, you can trace it back to the early days with
00:18him racing in this class on a 450.
00:20He's been able to win here so many times. And the track is just really suited to what he does
00:26so well on the motorcycle.
00:27So, of course, he wants that red plate back. And I think it's going to be difficult for anyone not
00:33named Eli Tomac to win this race tonight.
00:36That being said, Cooper Webb has quietly been on this podium streak. He's had it. He had a chance to
00:42win in Seattle.
00:43He had a chance to win in Arlington, just fell a little bit short and now finds himself 16 points
00:49back in the championship.
00:50And I was interested this week. We're talking stats on Daytona. This is actually average finish wise.
00:57His best venue on the calendar. Of course, he's yet to get a win here. He's talked about how much
01:03it would mean to him.
01:04So it would not surprise me at all to see Cooper put the pieces of the puzzle together and finally
01:10get the elusive Daytona win for the one.
01:13Well, he's talked about it a lot. He wants to get that. When he's got five second place finishes, seven
01:18podiums here at Daytona.
01:20And when we talk about Cooper Webb's style, his unique style, especially late in the races, you don't really think
01:25about Daytona.
01:26Well, then you look at the stat book. He's unbelievable here as we get 450 Group A qualifying.
01:32We're fueled by 7-11. But Coop wants to get a win here in Daytona. There's no doubt about that.
01:36And I said it off the top of the show, but this truly is a race. Having been there, having
01:41been a rider, been a part of this group, this is the one that people have circled on their calendar.
01:48Of course, the championship is the main goal.
01:51You're not going to go out and throw away a bunch of points to try to win Daytona, but this
01:56one is more special than any other regular season race on the calendar.
02:01Legends are made at Daytona, and I know Cooper Webb, so many accomplishments, a Hall of Fame career, but you
02:09know he wants to add Daytona to that list.
02:13No doubt about that, Cooper Webb.
02:16Look, I wrote press day with these guys yesterday.
02:18Oh, I saw you out there.
02:20I was going slow. I was going slow, of course.
02:23But there was a difference when I had a little camera on.
02:27I was riding behind Cooper Webb. I was riding behind Eli Tomac and Hunter Lawrence.
02:30And when I ride behind those guys, even though it's press days, just for the press to get some clips
02:36and some footage, all three of those guys, you would have thought it was qualifying.
02:40They were out there with a purpose. They were absolutely going for it.
02:43I had to do all I could, just through that one section of track, all I could to just hang
02:47with them, AC.
02:47Well, it's interesting because we talked a lot about Coop's struggles to start the year.
02:53You see him just go a little long on the triple, wasn't able to get both tires planted in that
02:58inside rut, makes a little mistake.
02:59But Coop had some mistakes to start the year.
03:02Coop had some mistakes to start the year, uncharacteristic crashes, kind of put himself at a points deficit.
03:06But he is maybe riding the best I've ever seen.
03:10And if you look back the last two weekends, he had two chances to win those races.
03:15And I really think he's going faster than ever.
03:18But when you have all these championship contenders, Hunter Lawrence, Eli Tomac, Ken Rockson, at the level they are right
03:26now, Coop just has to be so perfect from a speed perspective for his kind of late race attack template
03:34to work on the weekends.
03:36But if we know anything about Cooper Webb, it's that he figures it out.
03:40And it would not surprise me at all if we saw him on the top step this evening.
03:44Well, you know what I've noticed.
03:45It's Hunter Lawrence.
03:47Right behind him is Eli Tomac and then Cooper Webb.
03:49They're in a little freight train right now, absolutely going for it as we start 450 Group A Qualifier number
03:55one.
03:55And they've got to throw down early here in qualifying because you don't know if the track is going to
03:59get better, how much track work they're going to be able to do.
04:02Hammacher mentioned that he thought the track was better than he expected with the rain last night.
04:06But how about this guy?
04:07How good is he in Daytona?
04:09Unbelievable.
04:09And I love the little inside berm we have there in the corner before the whoops.
04:14You can cut off a lot of track, make up a lot of time on entry, but you really don't
04:19have that much speed if you go inside.
04:21So I'm interested.
04:22I really think this is going to turn out to be a great option for everybody.
04:26I think the guys that are going to jump the whoops are going to go inside, allows them to kind
04:30of wheelie into that first pocket.
04:32But for the guys that are comfortable skimming, like the guy, like the man on our screen right now, I
04:36think railing that outside and carrying a lot of speed into the whoops is going to be the move.
04:41The 94, the winner, the 2025 edition of Daytona Supercross Tough Sand Section right here.
04:47But Kenny talked about, look, Kenny's a two-time motocross champion.
04:50He hasn't gotten that Supercross championship yet.
04:53But he also talked about, oh, I want to win Daytona.
04:56It's something that I really, really want to do.
04:57He was able to tick that box last year.
04:59He was.
05:00And what a win.
05:02If you're going to win a race in the regular season, this is here to do it.
05:06And seeing him finally check that one off the list, you just saw how much it meant to him, his
05:12family, his team.
05:13And, Ken, he's kind of on that bubble right now where he could either start falling off a little bit
05:20and not really be in championship contention,
05:23or he can turn it up a gear and show that he's in this thing until the end.
05:28And you and I have both talked about it.
05:31But I think mentally, he's always physically had what he needed from a talent-wise, from bike skill-wise to
05:37be a Supercross champion.
05:39But I think mentally, this is the strongest Ken has ever been.
05:43And I think this is the year for him to take this championship late, late into the series.
05:48All right.
05:49Let's take a ride with the 94 of Ken Rockson.
05:52He goes triple, double.
05:53And then he comes in.
05:53Oh, I like that.
05:54Three's out of that turn.
05:55Three's all the way through there.
05:56That was a nice line.
05:58And you hardly ever see Ken jump the whoops.
06:01So if he's going inside, jumping the whoops, you know that that must be clearly faster to these guys.
06:08And to me, this is the area where you can lose or gain so much time.
06:12The bike is just skating from underneath you.
06:15The strength, you know, JB, to keep the bike going straight through that sand section is very, very difficult.
06:21Let's see what he does right here.
06:23Is he going to go triple, single to the inside?
06:25There's that nice little inside rut right there.
06:28Shaves off some track, goes double.
06:30This is interesting, too.
06:31He's going to go, oh, he goes double.
06:33Then he's going to go to the inside.
06:34You can also go triple to the inside.
06:36But look how ruddy this track is getting.
06:37It's already starting to evolve.
06:39And you saw that Honda tough block there on the inside of that corner was almost pushed a little bit
06:44into the rut.
06:44So Ken kind of had to stand the bike up to make sure he didn't catch a foot peg on
06:50the tough block.
06:50I like this line outside, in, cut off some track in the last corner, power on the ground.
06:56Let's see what he's got.
06:5994 jumps up.
07:00P1.
07:00Wow.
07:00118.4 as he knocks Cooper Webb off that top spot here in qualifier number one.
07:07It coupes a 118.7.
07:09Look at that leaderboard.
07:10Roxen, Webb, and Tomac.
07:12And this guy on the screen, Hunter Lawrence, you know he wants a little more than seventh right now.
07:16And the one thing about Hunter that is so cool is he buries the bike in that sand.
07:22I was just about to make a point about how his technique is good on all conditions.
07:27And, of course, JB makes a mistake right there coming out of the sand.
07:30And, folks, look at the leaderboard.
07:32We have an AP7 siding.
07:34He's to the top.
07:35And look at the top five.
07:37All of them are within four-tenths of a second.
07:39And if you remember last year, Aaron Plessinger had a bad start to the season.
07:44We were wondering what was going on.
07:45Then he comes to Daytona, has a good result, completely turned his season around.
07:50So good to see the cowboy up on top.
07:54Hunter Lawrence, you know he's going to line one up right here.
07:57He's in tenth, 120.6, but you know he's got more speed than that.
08:00Joey Savace, this is a good track for Joey.
08:03He got second the night that you won here in 2017.
08:07Cooper Webb fourth.
08:08Justin Cooper, Cooper Webb's teammate, he's in fifth.
08:11And Eli Tomac with a 118.8.
08:13And just look at that.
08:14The top six guys within four-tenths of a second.
08:17And you see just a replay looking at this mistake.
08:20Oftentimes going into a deep set of sand, you want to get your bike as straight as possible,
08:26entering the sand.
08:27And the way that rut was formed forced him to make a lot of his turn on exit.
08:32Asked a little bit too much of the front tire there.
08:35Buried it in the sand.
08:36But he's on another one, JB.
08:37He is on a fast one right now.
08:39He's going for it.
08:39The championship points leader by four points over Eli Tomac.
08:43Hunter Lawrence electing some different lines that we've seen.
08:46He went outside.
08:47He skimmed the whoops.
08:48He goes outside in that next turn.
08:50Goes triple-double.
08:51Let's see what he does to the sand.
08:52Does he jump across?
08:53He does.
08:53He goes for it.
08:54Oh, yeah, perfect.
08:55And I love the adjustment he made from the lap before.
08:59He was super light on the bike going into the sand, able to carry.
09:03You really want to prioritize the exit of the corner going into the sand to carry as much
09:08speed in as possible.
09:10Gets all the way into that inside rut.
09:12We saw Ken work in a different line here, going two-two on the outside.
09:17See Hunter getting a little creative with his lines.
09:20Jumps out of that really deep rut so he can carry a little bit more exit speed.
09:25It's going to go a different line than what we saw from Ken a couple laps ago.
09:28He's going to go inside, outside.
09:30And this is really where you have to keep your head on a swivel because these ruts blow out
09:34because they're so soft every lap.
09:36So you've got to look ahead and make sure you're in the right rut in the corner.
09:40And, oh, my goodness, 117.1.
09:45Justin Brayton, is that any good?
09:46It is no longer tight at the top, folks.
09:49Oh, now it is Cooper Webb said, I want to join the – then Ferrandez goes to second.
09:53These guys are absolutely going for it right now.
09:56Hunter Lawrence, 117.1.
09:59And Dylan Ferrandez only one-tenth of a second off of the lead.
10:02Wow.
10:03And Dylan Ferrandez has not been inside the top five in any session we've had so far this season.
10:09He's been solid inside the top ten.
10:11But some signs of life from the Red Bull Troy Lee Designs Ducati rider.
10:16Wow, this is awesome to see.
10:18AP was on a fast one.
10:19Oh, what a bummer.
10:20Two turns to go and makes a mistake.
10:22Oh, that's just what happens when you know you have to be so perfect on these fast laps.
10:26You're asking a lot of the tires coming in so fast on lean angle.
10:32The corner just blew out a little bit.
10:34But you know AP is feeling good when he just tees up another one, goes right into another fast lap.
10:39As I say that, of course he backs it down.
10:42Wow, I'm just looking at this leader boy, Justin Cooper.
10:45He wants to join the party in 117s.
10:47Cooper Webb in fourth.
10:48And Tomac's down an eighth right now.
10:51Wow.
10:52I'm surprised.
10:54Our statistician, Brett Smith, just handed me a note.
10:57Said Hunter's only been the fastest qualifier in the Premier Class one time in Philadelphia in 2024.
11:04So Hunter Lawrence showing some pace early.
11:08The last time this man topped qualifying here at Daytona was in 2021.
11:14So qualifying maybe doesn't mean that much to the three.
11:17Of course he wants to be better than eight.
11:19But this section right there, there's going to be a lot of time made up.
11:21Yes, and Eli will watch the footage in between.
11:24And the next time he's out, there's no doubt he'll be doing the line.
11:27We saw Hunter Duke jumping over that roller.
11:30You saw he was just a little bit too far inside in the sand.
11:34Didn't quite have the angle to jump across, but pretty decent lap for Eli Tomac.
11:39But we know he shows up when the gate drops.
11:43He's not too worried about being the fastest guy in qualifying.
11:47And really that's a sign of confidence in yourself to be able to go out there and say,
11:51look, I'm not the fastest guy.
11:53I'm a second, second and a half off.
11:55But I know that I'll have what it takes when the race comes.
11:59And we talked about Aaron Plessinger.
12:01You mentioned last season, wasn't having a great year, comes to Daytona, has a great ride.
12:04It totally changes his whole season as Eli Tomac jumps inside the top five.
12:08He joins the 1-7 team party.
12:10But what could this do for a guy like Dylan Ferrandez?
12:12You mentioned he hasn't been in the top five in a long time, but he's a motocross champion,
12:16so he really likes conditions like this.
12:18This could be a huge day for the 14.
12:19It can turn your season around, and you know this.
12:22You only need one session, one heat race, one main event when you kind of outperform yourself.
12:28And then suddenly your mindset starts to shift.
12:31You're no longer settled into that eighth, ninth, tenth place.
12:35You want more for yourself.
12:37You see it.
12:38You feel it.
12:39And everything starts going in the right direction.
12:41And you could say the same about so many of these guys on the list.
12:45But Dylan Ferrandez, at his absolute best, he's a guy that could be inside the top five,
12:51and there's no doubt about that in my mind.
12:53Cooper Webb on a fast one right now.
12:55He's fourth, a 117.6.
12:57Is he going to go faster than that?
12:58Saw he just got into that corner a little bit too fast.
13:02You saw just a little hesitation in the middle of the corner.
13:05The top of that left-hand corner was blown out.
13:07A couple little mistakes there for Coop, but he won't be too upset about fourth,
13:12especially being only a half a second down.
13:15That's a good way to start the day.
13:17Fastest qualifier here today.
13:18You want to talk about confidence?
13:20This man has got some fresh off of his first victory in this Premier Class.
13:25Hunter Lawrence, championship points leader.
13:27Now he's fastest here in Daytona, 117.1.
13:30But, folks, look at the top six right there.
13:34So tight at the top.
13:35But Dylan Ferrandez, what a start to the day here in Daytona for him.
13:39Only a tenth of a second off of the lead.
13:40Justin Cooper and Cooper Webb, teammates right there, third and fourth.
13:43And Eli Tomac, the seven-time winner of the Daytona Supercross.
13:48He's in the top five, so he's feeling good with a 117.8.
13:51Wow, what a start to the day here inside Daytona International Speedway.
13:55There you see Seth Hamaker signing some autographs for the fans.
13:58Stay tuned.
